a great weekend as well. i'm kasie hunt, don't go anywhere. cnn news central starts right now >> deadly tornadoes ripping through the midwest overnight officials are now searching for survivors, at least two people are confirmed dead so far. does tens of people hurt? >> and he managed now, we expect to see a ruling which will determine the fate of de a fani willis and the george's historic case against former president trump and his co-defendants we'll willis be disqualified from the case she brought. and what could happen next. >> so how 1 wrong move from a flight attendant may have sent a plane into we 500 foot freefall. new details on what's her to simple flying to what some called a mid air roller coaster. i'm john berman with sara sidner kate baldwin. it's friday. and this is cnn news central >> so right now, rescue crews are searching through what used to be homes, but is now catching debris. and this is across three states looking for survivors after a tornado outbreak in the midwest killed at least two people >> that is a huge tornado >> wow. >> oh, my god and there is nothing scarier, especially when that's coming at night. >> the places >> hardest hit are in parts of indiana and ohio and they're at least seven tornadoes that were reported their the path of destruction is huge, at least half the homes are destroyed and one town in the western part of indiana and ohio, one mayor is reporting that several people were trapped after a building collapsed in a trailer park was destroyed >> we don't know the extent of the damage on the south end of town. we do know that there have been some buildings and homes that they completely destroyed and that work will begin in the morning to actually go through and sub-divide every single one of those properties. can do everything within our power to find out if there is anyone still within the confines of those collapsed buildings? >> cnn's what new wild isn't winchester, indiana for us, whitney. what are you seeing there >> well, kate, in this location this is right outside of a goodwill and winchester, indiana and the damage is so clear as soon as you get out here, it is just so striking this goodwill, deciding effectively ripped away as you look here, you'll see so much debris spread all across this parking lot, but it is as you look farther out that it is just gut wrenching and so chilling what you see, if you can see off in the distance, kate, you see sheets of metal wrapped around trees and then you can see that car flipped over and crushed like a soda can. it is so alarming out here and kate, this is what it looks like at at dawn as the light comes up this morning, surely this will look even more horrible. and kate, what we know right now is at 38 people in this county have been injured. this storm system put 45 million people from texts says to western pennsylvania under the threat of severe storms and tornadoes it is, these were super cells that just ripped across areas from, again, from texas to pennsylvania, putting thousands of people without power here in indiana, 5,000 people at least without power, 20,000 people without power in ohio this scene, again is just so gut wrenching and when you listen to what people saw, it really hits home. kate oh, my, god >> that's going to hit us. i mean, honestly, that was all i could think of it said didn't know what to do first is just didn't know what to do. first made sure everybody is safe. we checked on our neighbors and everybody was good, but then just trying to evaluate what we could do >> so pretty shaken up >> kate, the indiana state police are out here in winchester to try to help with the cleanup in any rescue efforts that are needed at this moment. but now it's just a time to wait a time to clean up and wait and see and the daylight. how bad this destruction as kate. >> yeah, and that's the thing, is that woman was saying what we need to do, i'm not going to really get a full scope of what is needed until sons about to come up very soon. when wild in winchester force. thank you so much whitney. i mean, it's when this happens late at night terrifying anytime >> first light's not gonna be easy and will happen very, very shortly. whitney's there will keep us posted as to what the search and rescue efforts reveal. yeah. let's get right to cnn meteorologist derek van dam. derek, give us a sense of where this went and where it's heading? >> yeah. john, you know, we're still about a half-hour until we see first light, but just giving an overall estimation of what we're seeing from whitney's live shot just a moment ago, some of that damage is consistent with an ef2 tornado or greater. so that's wins roughly of 111, 235 miles per hour. that's terrifying and it's made twice this terrifying especially when it strikes at night. remember, tornadoes are twice as deadly at nighttime because generally people are sleeping. look at how lightning illuminates this funnel cloud coming out of winchester, indiana. that is exactly where our whitney wild is on the ground and i want you to see that there were two separate rounds of tornado super cells that move through through the region last night. first notice the tornado popping up right near the ohio river between indiana, kentucky, and ohio. but then the secondary line of storms that caused the damage across central indiana and into eastern ohio were later at night. and here's a look at the daytime footage from one tornado and carrollton, kentucky. i mean, look at that at tornado clearly on the ground this is the resulting damage, not necessarily from that tornado, but from one of the mini tornadoes that pumped up across the region, this is near the ohio river. and milton, kentucky seen buildings flattened, taken completely off of their foundations, and lives changed forever. eight confirmed tornadoes so far, that number likely to go up, and you can see over 300 reports of severe weather. now this line of storms is still marching across the deep south, and there's a, right, now a severe thunderstorm watch across central portions of alabama. this is the area we're highlighting as more of an immediate throughout even though this is moving into a more stable environment, we've noticed a couple of tornado warnings popping up here within the past 20 minutes. this is out of jackson county in alabama. so heads-up birmingham, you're about to be rocked by some stronger storms lots of lightning associated with this. and even another threat, flash flooding across southern portions of arkansas ongoing right now so dynamic storm system evolving this morning to say the least, john? >> yeah, what an awful night and you can see that the vivid images there of that storm still moving through, still very much of a threat. derek van dam. thank you. keep us posted. >> sarah. >> all right. it is decision de and fulton county, georgia. we are standing by for a judge's ruling on whether or not district political. the judge presiding over the georgia election subversion case will soon issue an incredibly significant decision solving. fulton county da fani willis, the big question will he disqualify her from trying the case? the ruling could upend the georgia election case against donald trump and his co-defendants. cnn's nick valencia is outside the courthouse in atlanta for us. first of all, how will this ruling be delivered? how will we get the information? >> yes, there are a great question. we know it won't come in the form of a hearing. it's going to come in the form of a written order and previous orders from judge scott mcafee have tended to to come out in the morning. and so in the meantime, though we wait a big question mark still is timing for this monumental decision. will fani willis be allowed to continue on with the case? case that she's investigated for the last three years. it all started january 2, 2021 with that infamous phone call from the former president to georgia secretary of state to ask him to find hi and more votes. and now it's gotten this here to this 0.19 indictments by the fulton county district attorney's office for guilty pleas. but a big question mark remains will find he willis be able to continue and prosecute this case or will should be thrown off, throwing this case into uncertainty. judge scott mcafee has granted more interviews in the last week than he has as he took on this case late last year. and it was yesterday that wsp or affiliate here in atlanta caught up with mcafee at the rotary club. he was there at an event speaking and this is what he had had to say to one of the local news reporters here on the decision, he says should be out tomorrow. i made a promise to everybody these kinds of orders take time to write. i need to make sure i say exactly what i want to and plan to stick to the timeline i gave everyone the message i always want to convey is that no ruling of mine is ever going to be based on politics. i'm going to be following the law as best i understand it. we ran into them earlier this week and asked him about timeline and he doubled down saying that the decision would come out by the end of the week. and here we are. but he also gave an interview late last week to a radio station here and he talked about how this case has personally affected him, saying that he has two young children ages 5.3, and then he looks forward to the de that he could look them in their eye and tell them that he played this straight and did the best he could for now though, sarah, we wait. sarah. >> all right. nick valencia. thank you so much for that reporting. now, you'll be bringing it to us as soon as we find out what its decision is. appreciate it okay. >> and now to florida, where the federal judge overseeing trump's classified documents case, they're just denied one of his requests to have the charges dismissed. judge aileen cannon ruling that the case would not be thrown out based on trump's claims of constitutional vagueness around the charges. but the judge has yet to rule on the second argument that donald trump's team is making as grounds for dismissing the case. and there's also the ana still the unanswered question of if there is a case, when will it go to trial? >> cnn's kit when polantz is following all of this forests, kaitlyn where does this all stand right now >> kate, it's waiting game >> here in south >> florida as well in this classified documents, case against donald trump four hours, five hours in court yesterday of oral arguments where donald trump's team is trying to convince judge aileen cannon to throw out his charges. these 30 some classified document mishandling charges, as well as an obstruction conspiracy, set of counts in that argument judge aileen cannon was pretty skeptical about what the trump team was putting forward. they had tried to make arguments to her that these papers that he took from the white house at the end of the presidency about national defense weapons us military plans that those were his personal papers because when he was president, he decided he wanted them as his personal no papers and he could do that. she was skeptical of that. and then very quickly on his other argument that the law was so vague around national security secrets or national defense material that he couldn't have known he was breaking the law as the president xi very quickly decided that she was going to reject that claim. but there is a lot a lot of options here that she has to look at what trump is asking for. there are nine different ways by my count that trump and his co-defendants have asked her to dismiss this case. we just heard the arguments on two of them. and so there's a lot of work to do. we're still expecting a decision from the judge on what to do with trump's personal records claim that presidential records claim argument that they made yesterday. and then of course, kate, the other thing we're waiting for a trial date we still don't have it. we've been in florida with other hours of arguments before this, judge about when this trial should take place and still nothing on the calendar we don't know when the next hearing will be either to work through more of the arguments that donald trump's team is trying to make here. so a lot still to go in this case before we get to a trial. >> and we can really get get some of his information at anytime. the judge can hand down this decision at anytime now and we can hear it very quickly. which is why we're standing by. it's great to see you, caitlin. thank you so much. >> with no trial date. the only thing to do is go to the beach. >> obviously obviously are your says jealous? >> well, no, i want to know if judge aileen cannon could heard in this trial the fact that ethan had never been disciplined in school, but had been found to be watching violent videos where people are being murdered. his english writings had violent with the trump campaign and what it might mean for november, the rnc's new trump appointed or sorry, trump approved chairman michael whatley sent a three-page memo to the rnc members just days after donald trump clinched, the gop presidential nomination in it, widely says, we are now a united operation and a united front seeing a national political reporter, daniel strauss is joining us now. dinner, he seems to be making clear that this is trump's party well, it's more about the memo >> yeah. what's interesting about this memo is that it lays out in pretty specific details some of the major changes going on at the committee now that donald trump is the presumptive nominee for the republican party for president in the united states. now, just keep in mind here. it's not unusual when a national committee has a presumptive nominee or a declare an official nominee for president that the national committee somehow merges or gets closer to that. nominee's campaign. but what we're seeing in this cycle with this republican national committee and trump campaign is that there is a very, very close merger going on here. and the priority of the rnc going forward is going to be dramatically focused on election integrity and claims of election fraud. this has been a priority for the former president for a while. since 2020. and he has since been frustrated with the rnc because he's felt that they have been insufficient in their capabilities of rooting out election fraud. and what we're seeing in this memo is details about how the committee will change to reflect donald trump's wishes on that front? >> all right. daniel strauss. thank you so much. appreciate it, john. >> so this morning, senate majority leader chuck schumer is facing sharp criticism for his call for new elections in israel and calling israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu an obstacle to peace. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell called the comments grotesque and hypocritical. stuart stevens and democratic strategist joe trippy. i don't want to talk so much about the merits of what chuck schumer said. that's being debated around the world, joe, but i want to know about the politics who's the audience here? >> well, look, it's certainly unusual. it's not. this is like a first-time i can remember anybody doing this. i think i think the audience is netanyahu. i mean, i think it's putting pressure on the netanyahu to come to trump firms with the cease fire and that, you know, basically, i actually think this was an audience of one. i'm actually surprised that it took this long for, someone to go out and say this, although i haven't be chuck schumer is pretty pretty groundbreaking. >> still. what about the audience of young progressive democrats, many of whom seem to be very uncomfortable at this point. that's putting it mildly with israel's policy and gaza well, i mean that the author i've worked a lot in israel is very unpopular guy. this is, i think a message to, not like he says, it's also a message inside israel but those of the united states understand that netayahu, maybe your current leader, but he is not your leader. if you had an election today, i actually think there's a good thing that schumer did not do. yahoo has come to america and basically supported donald trump. he supporting donald trump. now, we shouldn't pretend that politics isn't part of this. and the united states should make clear to israel real that we will support israel. but we would not unilaterally support met de yahoo. and what, in some ways is becoming more of a reelection campaign? so >> this morning we're waking up to reports in both politico and axios of what you can call a dear mike letter from the white house counsel edward siskel to house speaker mike johnson on the impeachment efforts, what they call the floundering impeachment efforts against president biden. the letter reads, stewart, dear mr. speaker, i write you today because it is clear that house republican impeachment is over. members of the house majority believed the inquiry is quote, falling apart. it is obviously time to move on >> mr. speaker. what does this tell you, stuart, about the shifting politics of the impeachment if the white house is making political hay out of it now yeah, look, i mean mike johnson, the basically any letter to my johnson, you know, you may think that we're still going out, but we're not this whole >> effort has been tawdry that etic, stupid, counterproductive to the purposes of anybody in the united states, it wants to try to have a better life because they actually elected these people to govern there's world changing history, changing stuff like passing the bill to support ukraine, that this congress should be addressing. and it's extraordinary that they're sitting around like a bunch of stone kids at the end of a dorm room on a saturday night. the guys who can't get a hey, trying to figure out ways that they can get revenge republican party is not a governing party, and they're going to show it over and over in different ways. but we have to quit being surprised when they do. >> thank you for using a relatable metaphor. their sewer joe what about what about the impeachment effort here? can democrats use this for political gain? now >> look, i think the republicans can't get out of their own way on this stuff. i mean, even the her hearing that they they just brought i think exposed more differences in hurt trump and made his case the difference in his case a guy who didn't actually wanted to keep the documents never turn them over, faulted every inch of the way had his employees move the documents to hide them. all those things are so much different and so here they bring this, bringing in the special counsel in an attempt to resurrect again the fact that all americans no g's. joe biden is an old guy. so they are doing that again is stewart says, while there's real things that need to happen here, that they're not like ukraine, like funding that. so i again, that whole hearing i think hurt trump and his cause and the cause of and by the way, hurt a bunch of republican members of the house who happened to be running again and district joe biden won so they keep walked when these guys down the plank and they're all going to pay for it in november. it's just it's just stupid. it's we're now into this literally the stupid his period of politics that i've seen in my entire career that's a pretty high bar right there. see a lot of stupid periods, but i understand what you're saying very quickly by the end today, judge scott mcafee in georgia will rule on whether fani willis, the fulton county district, trying to get stay on the case. we don't know how he is going to rule, but if he is remove, she is removed. >> how much >> of a political gain is it for donald trump? a political gain >> look, i think what happens today is not going to matter as much as what happens when there will be a trial you know, it could be a good news cycle for donald trump. but it's not going to make the fact that he called up the secretary of state of georgia owner recorded line and told him to rig an election. none of that's going to go away so i think we have to keep the big picture here, what the republican party is led by a guy who is out on bail, literally, who was convicted of sexual assault that a judge classified as rape that we don't talk about this as the headline in every election story is just amazing. and every donor to the republican party, to know you're giving to now, the polls are open and russia, as president vladimir putin is poised to win a fifth term, he is the >> country's longest-serving ruler since joseph stalin. and ahead of this, putin urge voters, including those in the annex ukrainian regions, to vote as a show of patriotism now the widow of the late opposition leader alexey navalny has asked for voters to turn out collectively at noon sunday, the last day of voting as a show of opposition. cnn's matthew chance is at a voting station in moscow for us. matthew, what are you seeing there? >> hi kight will certainly russians appear to be going through the motions in this presidential election. you joined me any a polling station in the center of moscow. you can see people are registering to cast their ballots here at these deaths. then can vote at one of these electronic voting machines over here, or they can do it by hand and put their votes into the the transparent ballot box that's just over there. so that also evoked, by the way, on an app for the first time in a presidential election, which critics say, yeah, offers some opportunity for the final numbers to be manipulated. but let me say this, make no mistake. the outcome of this presidential election is inevitable with vladimir putin, the current russian president's. let's set to win a fifth term in office in the kremlin. and the reason for that certainty is kate, because the russian opposition is not being permitted to take part in these polls, of course, has been a brutal crackdown on dissent in this country. opposition supporters have been silenced. their leaders have been jailed, had been exiled all their dead. alexey navalny, of course, the most prominent russian opposition leader died in his arctic penal colony just last month. and so that's had a very chilling effect on the atmosphere yeah that doesn't mean of course that there isn't a choice. and there are voters here have four candidates, including vladimir putin. you see people actually casting their votes right here. there are three other candidates apart from putin that are on the on the ballot. but frankly, none of them are significantly opposed to the kremlin. none of them enjoy any particular public support. going into this vote. and so as i say, the outcome of this presidential election is more or less known. it's more or less inevitable case >> and matthew, there have been calls for protest. >> have you seen anything >> well. that's right and that's one of the things we're watching for closely the widow of alexei navalny for instance, has gone out there and said, look, voters, russians should gather at polling stations at a particular time over the weekend it's not clear what that will look like there's already been a show of some discontent and some protests in moscow with one person tipping green dye into a ballot box. but the authorities have made it clear that any unsanctioned protests like that will be met with strict legal consequences. came >> matthew, it is wonderful to have the access to you in these voting stations. thank you so much. john. >> i've never seen a view like that from russia this morning, one arizona county is paying a hefty price for election disinformation and conspiracy theory about ballot paper led to spending $200,000 of taxpayer money on fraud proof paper that cannot even be used. now it sits in a warehouse inside two huge towers, only one man could report this story seen as donie o'sullivan is here now, donie, what's going on with this? john, there's a loss of wacky conspiracy theories about the 2020 election one of which you might remember the bamboo paper conspiracy theory in arizona and the costs of that conspiracy theory. ariel, take a look. this >> is a story >> about paper, lots and lots of paper. americans have been voting on >> tom's work nearly $200,000 of supposedly fraud proof ballot paper. it's currently lying on the floor of this warehouse in phoenix, and no one is quite sure what to do. it. >> had there ever been a problem with the paper before? no. no one's ever >> questioned the paper. >> and then what happened? >> we're getting into 2020. there's rumors of bamboo in the paper and paper from china and a lot of different just stories that circulated. and so just kind of went from there and people started questioning that as you were seeing that play out, what were you thinking? >> that it was not entered. david stevens, he ordered the paper paper itself, ballot paper. people have concerns about that. >> there were concerns, yes. >> what were those concerns? >> the people were making their own ballots. and then interjecting them into the system they were coming from foreign countries. maybe we can make our paper more secure. so we would know quicker or easier if it really is a valid arizona ballot or if it is not. >> do you personally believe the bamboo paper thing >> i don't know much about it other than they think it came from wherever stevens is a top election official in arizona's coachees county. coachees is home to tombstone, but it's a place where election conspiracy theories won't seem to die in 2022, election skeptics delayed certification of the midterm elections here, stevens, opponent and an upcoming election says he is part of the problem in coachees coachees has been in the headlines a lot the last few years because of elections. and mostly for bad reasons, it's an uphill battle because there are people who spread disinformation about our election shins. this theory that there's a problem with our paper. so it was a, it was a solution in search of a problem because we've never had a problem with our ballot paper. they're all kinds of safeguards and on top of other safeguards to make sure that the wrong ballot paper or it doesn't cause any problems >> run back election services takes these huge rolls of paper and turn them into millions of ballots that are used across the country, but not these two roles of special ballast, guard paper ordered by david stevens using a stage grads so this is a sample of the ballot guard paper. so when you sign on a black light, you get these, these uv fibers that now become a parent. additionally, there's what's called an ir tagging. and it's a chemical in there that when you hold a scanner over it, it'll it'll by row a, ms deadline and other bureaucratic snafus has put a halt to the soap called secure paper experiment. so i mean it's essentially $200,000 gone to waste. >> a little less than that, but yeah >> so this sounds like a bit of a nightmare >> pretty much, yeah. i want it to be over. >> but adrian fontes, arizona's top election official says stevens experiment shouldn't have started in the first place. >> well, the economic costs of the conspiracy theories in arizona are real dollars. now the paper that was purchased by this one county based on these conspiracy theories that is absolutely useless. and we can't even use who's it? they can't use it. this is taxpayer dollars down the drain based on lies. >> steven said he is not a conspiracy theorists, but in our conversation, he didn't refuse any. do you accept biden 1, the last election? >> the election and coaches county was fair and balanced and trump won coaches county. >> so nationally that's where the numbers came out. so there were there were a lot of issues but maybe there was an explanation for them. i don't know. >> to be fair. there's a lot of people think 2016 was rigged. hillary clinton still thinks she won the election. are they election denier's >> democrats would say, well luck our side didn't go attack the us capitol. >> i wasn't there i didn't go. we actually had some people here that when i think they claimed it was peaceful. >> but the facts are clear. january 6 was not peaceful. hillary clinton formerly conceded to donald trump the morning after the election an arizona is stuck with tons of seemingly useless paper >> and john, of >> course, we should stress again, there isn't a problem with the paper. all election officials and security experts have told us the paper you vote on as part of a secure process so that i papers totally unnecessary based on everybody who spoke to a lot of people asking me why can't they just use that paper for something else that in itself could create a security issue if this paper was out in the wild in arizona because it could lead to other issues. so a lot going on there, but you can see the real costs of conspiracy theories. >> that was a fantastic piece and a $200,000 representation of what nonsense looks like in paper form. >> john, i have to call you out this morning on the big story. >> yes. so i'm not wearing green green tie. it same patrick's day weekend. it's sunday. >> eyes are crying this morning. john thank you very you know, you can celebrate as many days as you want, john, just for the record, i have no green on either. sorry, donie all right. new developments is morning on what may have caused a passenger plane to suddenly nose dive during a flight to new zealand, officials are looking into whether a mealtime misshapen the cockpit might be to blame for this, the wall street journal this morning reporting a flight attendant may have accidentally hit a switch that pushed the pilot into the control is causing the plane to suddenly dropped, leaving dozens of passengers injured. seen an aerospace analysts, miles o'brien joins us now to discuss what so a switch is pulled and the pilot goes flying, ended like, how does that happen >> yeah, it's supposed to be a convenience switch, but apparently a little bit of a memo needs to go out to warn people about this. it's just switch on the back of the seat to the aircraft asked on the flight deck, which makes it easier for the pilots to move the seed in and out of position as they settle in to do their job otherwise, they'd have to reach down below and to the side in order to move the c, which is electrically controlled what evidently happened was this flight attendant leaned on that portion of the seat where the switch is it activated the seat and it has a way of kind of locking into place and moving forward at the time the member of the flight crew was seated kind of sideways as if talking and receiving the foods with his legs crossed. that pushed him and his legs against the control column and initiated this nosedive they lost well over 10,000 feet very quickly. and can i just say this, sarah, if you're on a plane and you're in your seat please. please keep your seat buckled the buckle, your seat belt. use what i'm trying to say. >> yeah. it's a real reminder. i mean, because a lot of things some people get up and they go to the bathroom. and so those folks probably ended up on the ceiling. but it is a really good reminder to keep your seat belt on when you are seated on a flight because you just never know with all the turbulence. and then you have this issue. we heard from a passenger who said that when they ask the pilot would happen as they were leaving, that he said that the controls just went blank is that something that could happen with this when you are pushed into the control panel >> investigators, i've talked to don't know what to make of that one, and i don't think

a great weekend as well. i'm kasie hunt, don't go anywhere. cnn news central starts right now >> deadly tornadoes ripping through the midwest overnight officials are now searching for survivors, at least two people are confirmed dead so far. does tens of people hurt? >> and he managed now, we expect to see a ruling which will determine the fate of de a fani willis and the george's historic case against former president trump and his co-defendants we'll willis be disqualified from the case she brought. and what could happen next. >> so how 1 wrong move from a flight attendant may have sent a plane into we 500 foot freefall. new details on what's her to simple flying to what some called a mid air roller coaster. i'm john berman with sara sidner kate baldwin. it's friday. and this is cnn news central >> so right now, rescue crews are searching through what used to be homes, but is now catching debris. and this is across three states looking for survivors after a tornado outbreak in the midwest killed at least two people >> that is a huge tornado >> wow. >> oh, my god and there is nothing scarier, especially when that's coming at night. >> the places >> hardest hit are in parts of indiana and ohio and they're at least seven tornadoes that were reported their the path of destruction is huge, at least half the homes are destroyed and one town in the western part of indiana and ohio, one mayor is reporting that several people were trapped after a building collapsed in a trailer park was destroyed >> we don't know the extent of the damage on the south end of town. we do know that there have been some buildings and homes that they completely destroyed and that work will begin in the morning to actually go through and sub-divide every single one of those properties. can do everything within our power to find out if there is anyone still within the confines of those collapsed buildings? >> cnn's what new wild isn't winchester, indiana for us, whitney. what are you seeing there >> well, kate, in this location this is right outside of a goodwill and winchester, indiana and the damage is so clear as soon as you get out here, it is just so striking this goodwill, deciding effectively ripped away as you look here, you'll see so much debris spread all across this parking lot, but it is as you look farther out that it is just gut wrenching and so chilling what you see, if you can see off in the distance, kate, you see sheets of metal wrapped around trees and then you can see that car flipped over and crushed like a soda can. it is so alarming out here and kate, this is what it looks like at at dawn as the light comes up this morning, surely this will look even more horrible. and kate, what we know right now is at 38 people in this county have been injured. this storm system put 45 million people from texts says to western pennsylvania under the threat of severe storms and tornadoes it is, these were super cells that just ripped across areas from, again, from texas to pennsylvania, putting thousands of people without power here in indiana, 5,000 people at least without power, 20,000 people without power in ohio this scene, again is just so gut wrenching and when you listen to what people saw, it really hits home. kate oh, my, god >> that's going to hit us. i mean, honestly, that was all i could think of it said didn't know what to do first is just didn't know what to do. first made sure everybody is safe. we checked on our neighbors and everybody was good, but then just trying to evaluate what we could do >> so pretty shaken up >> kate, the indiana state police are out here in winchester to try to help with the cleanup in any rescue efforts that are needed at this moment. but now it's just a time to wait a time to clean up and wait and see and the daylight. how bad this destruction as kate. >> yeah, and that's the thing, is that woman was saying what we need to do, i'm not going to really get a full scope of what is needed until sons about to come up very soon. when wild in winchester force. thank you so much whitney. i mean, it's when this happens late at night terrifying anytime >> first light's not gonna be easy and will happen very, very shortly. whitney's there will keep us posted as to what the search and rescue efforts reveal. yeah. let's get right to cnn meteorologist derek van dam. derek, give us a sense of where this went and where it's heading? >> yeah. john, you know, we're still about a half-hour until we see first light, but just giving an overall estimation of what we're seeing from whitney's live shot just a moment ago, some of that damage is consistent with an ef2 tornado or greater. so that's wins roughly of 111, 235 miles per hour. that's terrifying and it's made twice this terrifying especially when it strikes at night. remember, tornadoes are twice as deadly at nighttime because generally people are sleeping. look at how lightning illuminates this funnel cloud coming out of winchester, indiana. that is exactly where our whitney wild is on the ground and i want you to see that there were two separate rounds of tornado super cells that move through through the region last night. first notice the tornado popping up right near the ohio river between indiana, kentucky, and ohio. but then the secondary line of storms that caused the damage across central indiana and into eastern ohio were later at night. and here's a look at the daytime footage from one tornado and carrollton, kentucky. i mean, look at that at tornado clearly on the ground this is the resulting damage, not necessarily from that tornado, but from one of the mini tornadoes that pumped up across the region, this is near the ohio river. and milton, kentucky seen buildings flattened, taken completely off of their foundations, and lives changed forever. eight confirmed tornadoes so far, that number likely to go up, and you can see over 300 reports of severe weather. now this line of storms is still marching across the deep south, and there's a, right, now a severe thunderstorm watch across central portions of alabama. this is the area we're highlighting as more of an immediate throughout even though this is moving into a more stable environment, we've noticed a couple of tornado warnings popping up here within the past 20 minutes. this is out of jackson county in alabama. political. the judge presiding over the georgia election subversion case will soon issue an incredibly significant decision solving. fulton county da fani willis, the big question will he disqualify her from trying the case? the ruling could upend the georgia election case against donald trump and his co-defendants. cnn's nick valencia is outside the courthouse in atlanta for us. first of all, how will this ruling be delivered? how will we get the information? >> yes, there are a great question. we know it won't come in the form of a hearing. it's going to come in the form of a written order and previous orders from judge scott mcafee have tended to to come out in the morning. and so in the meantime, though we wait a big question mark still is timing for this monumental decision. will fani willis be allowed to continue on with the case? case that she's investigated for the last three years. it all started january 2, 2021 with that infamous phone call from the former president to georgia secretary of state to ask him to find hi and more votes. and now it's gotten this here to this 0.19 indictments by the fulton county district attorney's office for guilty pleas. but a big question mark remains will find he willis be able to continue and prosecute this case or will should be thrown off, throwing this case into uncertainty. judge scott mcafee has granted more interviews in the last week than he has as he took on this case late last year. and it was yesterday that wsp or affiliate here in atlanta caught up with mcafee at the rotary club. he was there at an event speaking and this is what he had had to say to one of the local news reporters here on the decision, he says should be out tomorrow. i made a promise to everybody these kinds of orders take time to write. i need to make sure i say exactly what i want to and plan to stick to the timeline i gave everyone the message i always want to convey is that no ruling of mine is ever going to be based on politics. i'm going to be following the law as best i understand it. we ran into them earlier this week and asked him about timeline and he doubled down saying that the decision would come out by the end of the week. and here we are. but he also gave an interview late last week to a radio station here and he talked about how this case has personally affected him, saying that he has two young children ages 5.3, and then he looks forward to the de that he could look them in their eye and tell them that he played this straight and did the best he could for now though, sarah, we wait. sarah. based on trump's claims of constitutional vagueness around the charges. but the judge has yet to rule on the second argument that donald trump's team is making as grounds for dismissing the case. and there's also the ana still the unanswered question of if there is a case, when will it go to trial? >> cnn's kit when polantz is following all of this forests, kaitlyn where does this all stand right now >> kate, it's waiting game >> here in south >> florida as well in this classified documents, case against donald trump four hours, five hours in court yesterday of oral arguments where donald trump's team is trying to convince judge aileen cannon to throw out his charges. these 30 some classified document mishandling charges, as well as an obstruction conspiracy, set of counts in that argument judge aileen cannon was pretty skeptical about what the trump team was putting forward. they had tried to make arguments to her that these papers that he took from the white house at the end of the presidency about national defense weapons us military plans that those were his personal papers because when he was president, he decided he wanted them as his personal no papers and he could do that. she was skeptical of that. and then very quickly on his other argument that the law was so vague around national security secrets or national defense material that he couldn't have known he was breaking the law as the president xi very quickly decided that she was going to reject that claim. but there is a lot a lot of options here that she has to look at what trump is asking for. there are nine different ways by my count that trump and his co-defendants have asked her to dismiss this case. we just heard the arguments on two of them. and so there's a lot of work to do. we're still expecting a decision from the judge on what to do with trump's personal records claim that presidential records claim argument that they made yesterday. and then of course, kate, the other thing we're waiting for a trial date we still don't have it. we've been in florida with other hours of arguments before this, judge about when this trial should take place and still nothing on the calendar we don't know when the next hearing will be either to work through more of the arguments that donald trump's team is trying to make here. so a lot still to go in this case before we get to a trial. >> donald trump clinched, the gop presidential nomination in it, widely says, we are now a united operation and a united front seeing a national political reporter, daniel strauss is joining us now. major changes going on at the committee now that donald trump is the presumptive nominee for the republican party for president in the united states. now, just keep in mind here. it's not unusual when a national committee has a presumptive nominee or a declare an official nominee for president that the national committee somehow merges or gets closer to that. nominee's campaign. but what we're seeing in this cycle with this republican national committee and trump campaign is that there is a very, very close merger going on here. and the priority of the rnc going forward is going to be dramatically focused on election integrity and claims of election fraud. this has been a priority for the former president for a while. since 2020. and he has since been frustrated with the rnc because he's felt that they have been insufficient in their capabilities of rooting out election fraud. and what we're seeing in this memo is details about how the committee will change to reflect donald trump's wishes on that front? >> all right. daniel strauss. thank you so much. appreciate it, john. >> so this morning, senate majority leader chuck schumer is facing sharp criticism for his politics who's the audience here? >> well, look, it's certainly unusual. it's not. this is like a first-time i can remember anybody doing this. i think i think the audience is netanyahu. i mean, i think it's putting pressure on the netanyahu to come to trump firms with the cease fire and that, you know, basically, i actually think this was an audience of one. i'm actually surprised that it took this long for, someone to go out and say this, although i haven't be chuck schumer is pretty pretty groundbreaking. >> still. what about the audience of young progressive democrats, many of whom seem to be very uncomfortable at this point. that's putting it mildly with israel's policy and gaza well, i mean that the author i've worked a lot in israel is very unpopular guy. this is, i think a message to, not like he says, it's also a message inside israel but those of the united states understand that netayahu, maybe your current leader, but he is not your leader. if you had an election today, i actually think there's a good thing that schumer did not do. yahoo has come to america and basically supported donald trump. he supporting donald trump. now, we shouldn't pretend that politics isn't part of this. and the united states should make clear to israel real that we will support israel. but we would not unilaterally support met de yahoo. and what, in some ways is becoming more of a reelection campaign? so >> this morning we're waking up to reports in both politico and axios of what you can call a dear mike letter from the white house counsel edward siskel to house is clear that house republican impeachment is over. members of the house majority believed the inquiry is quote, falling apart. it is obviously time to move on >> mr. speaker. what does this tell you, it's extraordinary that they're sitting around like a bunch of stone kids at the end of a dorm room on a saturday night. the guys who can't get a hey, trying to figure out ways that they can get revenge republican party is not a governing party, and they're going to show it over and over in different ways. but we have to quit being surprised when they do. >> thank you for using a relatable metaphor. their sewer joe what about what about the impeachment effort here? can democrats use this for political gain? now >> look, i think the republicans can't get out of their own way on this stuff. i mean, even the her hearing that they they just brought i think exposed more differences in hurt trump and made his case the difference in his case a guy who didn't actually wanted to keep the documents never turn them over, faulted every inch of the way had his employees move the documents to hide them. all those things are so much different and so here they bring this, bringing in the special counsel in an attempt to resurrect again the fact that all americans no g's. joe biden is an old guy. so they are doing that again is stewart says, while there's real things that need to happen here, that they're not like ukraine, like funding that. so i again, that whole hearing i think hurt trump and his cause and the cause of and by the way, hurt a bunch of republican members of the house who happened to be running again and district joe biden won so they keep walked when these guys down the plank and they're all going to pay for it in november. it's just it's just stupid. it's we're now into this literally the stupid his period of politics that i've seen in my entire career that's a pretty high bar right there. see a lot of stupid periods, but i understand what you're saying very quickly by the end today, judge scott mcafee in georgia will rule on whether fani willis, the fulton county district, trying to get stay on the case. we don't know how he is going to rule, there will be a trial you know, it could be a good news cycle for donald trump. but it's not going to make the fact that he called up the secretary of state of georgia owner recorded line and told him to rig an election. none of that's going to go away so i think we have to keep the big picture here, what the republican party is led by a guy who is out on bail, literally, who was convicted of sexual assault that a judge classified as rape that we don't talk about this as the headline in every election story is just amazing. and every donor to the republican party, to know you're giving to leaders have been jailed, had been exiled all their dead. alexey navalny, of course, the most prominent russian opposition leader died in his arctic penal colony just last month. and so that's had a very chilling effect on the atmosphere yeah that doesn't mean of course that there isn't a choice. and there are voters here have four candidates, including vladimir putin. you see people actually casting their votes right here. there are three other candidates apart from putin that are on the on the ballot. but frankly, none of them are significantly opposed to the kremlin. none of them enjoy any particular public support. going into this vote. and so as i say, the outcome of this presidential election is more or less known. it's more or less inevitable case >> and matthew, there have been calls for protest. >> have you seen anything >> well. that's right and that's one of the things we're watching for closely the widow of alexei navalny for instance, has gone out there and said, look, voters, russians should gather at polling stations at a particular time over the weekend it's not clear what that will look like there's already been a show of some discontent and some protests in moscow with one person tipping green dye into a ballot box. but the authorities have made it clear that any unsanctioned protests like that will be met with strict legal consequences. came >> matthew, it is wonderful to have the access to you in these voting stations. thank you so much. john. >> i've never seen a view like that from russia this morning, one arizona county is paying a hefty price for election disinformation and conspiracy theory about ballot paper led to spending $200,000 of taxpayer money on fraud proof paper that cannot even be used. now it sits in a warehouse inside two huge towers, only one man could report this story seen as donie o'sullivan is here now, donie, what's going on with this? john, there's a loss of wacky conspiracy theories about the 2020 election one of which you might remember the bamboo paper conspiracy theory in arizona and the costs of that conspiracy theory. ariel, take a look. this >> is a story >> about paper, lots and lots of paper. americans have been voting on >> tom's work nearly $200,000 of supposedly fraud proof ballot paper. it's currently lying on the floor of this warehouse in phoenix, and no one is quite sure what to do. it. >> had there ever been a problem with the paper before? no. no one's ever >> questioned the paper. >> and then what happened? >> we're getting into 2020. there's rumors of bamboo in the paper and paper from china and a lot of different just stories that circulated. and so just kind of went from there and people started questioning that as you were seeing that play out, what were you thinking? >> that it was not entered. david stevens, he ordered the paper paper itself, ballot paper. people have concerns about that. >> there were concerns, yes. >> what were those concerns? >> the people were making their own ballots. and then interjecting them into the system they were coming from foreign countries. maybe we can make our paper more secure. so we would know quicker or easier if it really is a valid arizona ballot or if it is not. >> do you personally believe the bamboo paper thing >> i don't know much about it other than they think it came from wherever stevens is a top election official in arizona's coachees county. coachees is home to tombstone, but it's a place where election conspiracy theories won't seem to die in 2022, election skeptics delayed certification of the midterm elections here, stevens, opponent and an upcoming election says he is part of the problem in coachees coachees has been in the headlines a lot the last few years because of elections. and mostly for bad reasons, it's an uphill battle because there are people who spread disinformation about our election shins. this theory that there's a problem with our paper. so it was a, it was a solution in search of a problem because we've never had a problem with our ballot paper. they're all kinds of safeguards and on top of other safeguards to make sure that the wrong ballot paper or it doesn't cause any problems >> run back election services takes these huge rolls of paper and turn them into millions of ballots that are used across the country, but not these two roles of special ballast, guard paper ordered by david stevens using a stage grads so this is a sample of the ballot guard paper. so when you sign on a black light, you get these, these uv fibers that now become a parent. additionally, there's what's called an ir tagging. and it's a chemical in there that when you hold a scanner over it, it'll it'll by row a, ms deadline and other bureaucratic snafus has put a halt to the soap called secure paper experiment. so i mean it's essentially $200,000 gone to waste. >> a little less than that, but yeah >> so this sounds like a bit of a nightmare >> pretty much, yeah. i want it to be over. >> but adrian fontes, arizona's top election official says stevens experiment shouldn't have started in the first place. >> well, the economic costs of the conspiracy theories in arizona are real dollars. now the paper that was purchased by this one county based on these conspiracy theories that is absolutely useless. and we can't even use who's it? they can't use it. this is taxpayer dollars down the drain based on lies. >> steven said he is not a conspiracy theorists, but in our conversation, he didn't refuse any. do you accept biden 1, the last election? >> the election and coaches county was fair and balanced and trump won coaches county. >> so nationally that's where the numbers came out. so there were there were a lot of issues but maybe there was an explanation for them. i don't know. >> to be fair. there's a lot of people think 2016 was rigged. hillary clinton still thinks she won the election. are they election denier's >> democrats would say, well luck our side didn't go attack the us capitol. >> i wasn't there i didn't go. we actually had some people here that when i think they claimed it was peaceful. >> but the facts are clear. january 6 was not peaceful. hillary clinton formerly conceded to donald trump the morning after the election an arizona is stuck with tons of seemingly useless paper >> and john, of >> course, we should stress again, there isn't a problem with the paper. all election officials and security experts have told us the paper you vote on as part of a secure process so that i papers totally unnecessary based on everybody who spoke to a lot of people asking me why can't they just use that paper for something else that in itself could create a security issue if this paper was out in the wild in arizona because it could lead to other issues. so a lot going on there, but you can see the real costs of conspiracy theories. >> that was a fantastic piece and a $200,000 representation of what nonsense looks like in paper form. >> john, i have to call you out this morning on the big story. >> yes. so i'm not wearing green green tie. it same patrick's day weekend. it's sunday. >> eyes are crying this morning. john thank you very you know, you can celebrate as many days as you want, john, just for the record, i have no green on either. sorry, donie all right. new developments is morning on what may have caused a passenger plane to suddenly nose dive during a flight to new zealand, officials are looking into whether a mealtime misshapen the cockpit might be to blame for this, the wall street journal this morning reporting a flight attendant may have accidentally hit a switch that pushed the pilot into the control is causing the plane to suddenly dropped, leaving dozens of passengers injured. seen an aerospace analysts, miles o'brien joins us now to discuss what so a switch is pulled and the pilot goes flying, ended like, how does that happen >> yeah, it's supposed to be a convenience switch, but apparently a little bit of a memo needs to go out to warn people about this. it's just switch on the back of the seat to the aircraft asked on the flight deck, which makes it easier for the pilots to move the seed in and out of position as they settle in to do their job otherwise, they'd have to reach down below and to the side in order to move the c, which is electrically controlled what evidently happened was this flight attendant leaned on that portion of the seat where the switch is it activated the seat and it has a way of kind of locking into place and moving forward at the time the member of the flight crew was seated kind of sideways as if talking and receiving the foods with his legs crossed. that pushed him and his legs against the control column and initiated this nosedive they lost well over 10,000 feet very quickly. and can i just say this, sarah, if you're on a plane and you're in your seat please. please keep your seat buckled the buckle, your seat belt. use what i'm trying to say. >> yeah. it's a real reminder. i mean, because a lot of things some people get up and they go to the bathroom. and so those folks probably ended up on the ceiling. but it is a really good reminder to keep your seat belt on when you are seated on a flight because you just never know with all the turbulence. and then you have this issue. we heard from a passenger who said that when they ask the pilot would happen as they were leaving, that he said that the controls just went blank is that something that could happen with this when you are pushed into the control panel >> investigators, i've talked to don't know what to make of that one, and i don't think
