by international law. i mean, of course we want them to do that. and that memo indicated not only for israel, but other countries in conflict that they would have 45 days to get that information turned over to the united states to secretary blinken, particularly and other countries not in conflict would have 180 days. this is not a remarkable or exceptional policy. of course, we want our international partners two abide by international law and israel is, one, is the country in the world that has the most compliance with international law that endeavors aggressively to notify that civilians who are in harm's way when they are going to engage in a military action? they should get out of harm's way provides pathways to do that. and what is the masto hamas uses their own people as civilian shields. so that they, because there, because the pain, the tragedy, and the killing is the point with hamas because as they said, just after october 7, that was the first attack and there would be a second to third and the thousands attack. i think it's also important to note that there's a harvard-harris poll out today that shows that 82% the 68% of the american people are supportive of israel at 2% are supportive of israel being able to defend themselves. and that hamas is at 18. so i mean, that's important perspective because of course americans oppose terrorism and support beat people being able to defend themselves against it. >> it is important perspective as is the point that there are those including president biden, who have criticized a response that would go over the top or somehow undermine the expectations of compliance with international law. that is the crux of at issue in the notion of removing that eight are pausing it. last question for you, congresswoman, tonight's uncommitted vote. frankly, i mean, that's not the only wrinkle for democrats. rfk junior is getting his name on some key swing state ballots ahead with general election. i'm talking about in arizona and georgia. so farm and you were the former head of the dnc? he >> when you look at that traction, how big of a problem is this for the democrats >> i'm confident that from now until november, we're going to mount the most significant reelection campaign that at any, any presidential reelection campaign has ever run and they're going to run on joe biden's remarkable record of job creation the most in modern times, investments in infrastructure they just, they just announced $50 million that are coming from the infrastructure bill to my district at fort lauderdale airport, hollywood international airport. at $1.1 billion came to our community for everglades restoration. this is happening all over the country and voters are going to go to the polls and reward though biden because the chaos and pain that would return if donald trump were president, including a muslim ban, that he committed to reinstate as soon as he is he takes office again that's the kind of stark contrasts that voters are going to reject. returning to trump, the trump days and make sure that the better days ahead will continue with joe biden well, we shall see if those committed votes for uncommitted votes will translate to commitment to joe biden as of right now >> there seems to be something to be said for those statements already, congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz. thank you so much. >> thank you. laura >> cnn's continuing coverage of the michigan primary starts right now two big stories and two big victories. to the surprise of absolutely no one joe biden wins michigan and donald trump also wins the republican contests in michigan. but biden's big challenger right now is uncommitted, significant numbers of voters are angry with him, angry enough about his handling of gaza to send a message with a protest vote they're vowing that these numbers will grow. welcome back. top of the hour to our live special coverage. i'm abby phillip in new york >> i'm laura coates in washington, dc, amid what looks like an exorable march to another biden contest in november, donald trump is facing another the protest vote. thousands of people who, even though they may be can read the writing on the wall, writing that says donald trump will likely be the republican nominee. then i'll vote in for just him or for him. they're voting for nikki haley. and of course, the big question tonight is, what does all of this tell us about november? let's go straight to hell harry enten, who's at the magic wall, although when he's there at the magical wall, he has the very latest from michigan, harry biden wins, but is showing some vulnerability, right? >> that's exactly right, laura, look, i hope any time with me is a magical time. let's take a look. there you go, right at midnight here on the east. look, joe biden's getting any 1% block calling everybody else out of the water. the big question of course, is this uncommitted at 13%? and i want to put them in some historical perspective for you back in 2012 where there wasn't this protest vote, barack obama in fact, was getting about. let's see if i can do what a 11% or excuse me, uncommitted was getting about 11% against barack obama in that michigan primary. so right now on committed getting 13.4% just slightly greater than the percentage that of course obama got. and i want to sort of zone in on the areas where uncommitted is doing well, all right, let's go down to the southeast part of the state. all right. wayne county, detroit uncommitted. they're getting 16% of the the vote only 27% of the vote in some of that is dearborn where there's of course, a large arab american population were uncommitted is doing significantly better. in fact, getting about a majority of the vote. the last i look, but overall in the county, just 16%. how about some other places where it's doing well, how about let's go to lansing? lansing, michigan ingram counting east lansing, of course michigan state university. a lot of college-educated vote their uncommitted getting a little bless than 18% of the vote. but of course, only 23% of the vote in there, or how about let's go down here, we go. let's go. this is ann arbor the most well-educated part of the state, uncommitted getting nearly 20% of the vote, 61% of the vote. and i will note, if you go back to 2020, bernie sanders got 45% of the vote. there. joe biden just got 48% of the vote, significantly worse than he did statewide with 53% of the vote uncommitted doing well, but not necessarily too well. laura all right. that's the blue size of the republican red. >> yeah. all right. so we went on the, let say, let's go 2024. >> we're going to go >> to the republican side of the iri. what do we see here? we see donald trump with 68% of the vote, considerably less than joe biden's 80% of the vote, right? so there's this question, okay, it's the protest vote bigger on the democratic or republican side? nikki haley's getting 27% of the vote there. but of course, donald trump easily winning here. i should note there's a gop convention, not just a primary in the state of michigan where most of the delegates are in fact going to be allotted some of the delegates will be a lot of based upon this primary, but we're not exactly sure how we'll find out this weekend. where is donald trump not doing necessarily as well? let's go down to a familiar part of the state. let's go down again, the home of ann arbor, michigan university, university of michigan, excuse me, donald trump getting 53% of the vote. oh, we just jumped up to monro. let's go back. nikki haley getting 42% of the vote there. but in most of the state, you go up to that upper peninsula. upper peninsula is my dear friend billy, who is producing here reminded me of nikki haley just getting some 18% of vote, donald trump getting 78% overall, donald trump just doing very well. a michigan, he's doing considerably better there than he didn't. new hampshire where he got just 54% or if you go to south carolina this past weekend, you saw donald trump got 60% of tonight's michigan. he's doing considerably better that are then he's done in any of the primary so far, we're nikki haley was also on the ballot. laura harry enten, so smooth with the magic wall. somebody better wake up. john king, he's going to be upset abby >> thanks, laura, joining me now is abraham aiyash? he's the majority floor leader in the michigan house of representatives. and he is the highest ranking arabic american lawmaker in the state. abraham, thanks for joining us. now, as you just heard there, over 60,000 uncommitted votes and counting, do you think that this sends enough of a message to the president and his campaign at this point i think that's the question that we're going to have to ask the biden campaign what we know is this. michigan is going to be a critical state in november, and there's a significant chunk of michigan voters that are antiwar pro-peace and want to see an end to the funding of israel's war crimes and voters came out in with a lot of enthusiasm with that commitment and now the question has to be, to president biden in his campaign, what will they do to heed the call of these people that have come out and said, we are a pro-peace, anti-war movement that once our leaders to be better, it is not an undemocratic thing to demand that your leaders are bad and that they do more to lead with moral clarity and any asked what tonight's results will demonstrate. >> so let me ask you what happens next at your movement has a few demand, a ceasefire rebuilding gaza, conditioning aid to israel if president biden does not meet all of these demands, what comes next? what are you going to be advising the ceasefire movement supporters to do come november well, what we've seen is a ceasefire enrollment will be able to have a voice this august by are indications. it would look like we will likely have enough votes in some capacity to send delegates to chicago to continue to push the call for peace, to push the call for a ceasefire. and this is the right thing to do. we have seen nearly 15,000 palestinian babies murdered with us backed greenland weapons by netanyahu's regime. and there has not been no end in sight by, but what we see and i think people are sick of it. people do not want this country to be funding wars that are killing innocent men, women, and children for over 140 days so we have 140 days roughly until the august convention. we're going to keep pushing that narrative because it is the right thing to do is the moral thing to do. and history will judge this moment as where did we stand as a nation when we saw all the carnage, all the chaos. and unfortunately the callous disregard of the palestinian human and all the babies that we have seen murdered over the last hundred and 40 days. we want to see peace in that region. and the only way to do that is to stop funding, any effort that is bombing innocent people. so a ceasefire is the baseline to continue towards that march, towards greater peace. >> and i just want to note as you pointed out about the delegates, the threshold for getting delegates in the state would be 15% right now, you haven't quite hit that. it's about 13% from the numbers that i'm looking at. but looking forward to the convention, what does that look like? what does putting pressure on president biden look like at that convention in chicago >> we have we're going to explore every option, but i think you look at things like, what is the party platform on sending military aid to israel? what will be the party's platform on addressing israel's war crimes? these are the conversations that we have heard over the last several weeks. and i want to point out this one committed campaign has only been around for 21 days, and we have amassed a lot of support and let a grassroots and doozy asm for peace. and we're going to take that to the convention and i'll tell you, we have folks coming from other states, actually including arizona and georgia that said what? we do in our states to push this propene, war measure, that there will be on the floor of the convention >> you know, i can't i can't really predict anything. what i will say is president biden has a message and has an opportunity in this moment to respond to that message that americans overwhelmingly want to see peace they wanted to see a ceasefire in michigan alone. nearly 75% of michiganders, not democrats, 75% of michiganders want to see a ceasefire. so if michigan is a critical state in november, the question will be, why not listen to something that's 75% of people want. i tell you as an elected official myself abby, if i was told 75% of my constituency wants something and it's the right thing to do. there's no reason why i would not do it it to be to be fair to president biden. he said just yesterday, he's trying to push for a ceasefire as soon as this weekend so right here, he said it just yesterday. he said it just yesterday. and i think that is the point. we have seen 143 days of carnage, of chaos and callous disregard for humanity of the palestinians. and it was just yesterday and let's be very clear >> no, i don't think abraham i don't think that that's necessarily fair to say. i mean, the white house has been encouraging a cessation of fighting in exchange for hostages, which i presume you want the hostages returned to. i don't think it's fair to say that it was yesterday was the first time that that was something that was voiced >> well, i'll i'll say this for about 100 days. we did not see any conversation around the palestinians and their pain and suffering so much so that ana 100 day mark of this conflict, the white house did not release a single message, even dignifying the palestinians and the pain and suffering they went through. we want peace and we want peace for israelis, and we want peace for palestinians. the question is, will we have leaders that will heed that call an usher that piece forward. and you cannot do that by funding think bombs to a regime that is hellbent on wiping the palestinians out from gaza, as we've seen, demonstrated through the 80% of the civilian infrastructure that has been destroyed. a 30,000 dead, 2 million displaced, and nearly 100,000 that are still missing or presumed dead. so the numbers do not lie. >> and what we hope to do he was show that the numbers tonight will demonstrate that this president has an opportunity to lead with moral clarity and say, we will change course before november, we will change course to save lives and we will change course to usher in an antiwar pro-peace democratic big ten so that we can defeat the danger in november all right, michigan state house majority floor leader, abraham aiyash. thank you very much for your time tonight. laura >> really fascinating conversation. thank you, abby, i want to bring in my panel right now and talk about this now, we haven't going through the numbers and of course the data and the election results continuing to come in. >> but this is significant >> for biden and more decisive than say what trump has led by over nikki haley yet and still uncommitted. this is nothing to sneeze at. there is a message that has been sent. >> well, absolutely. but one thing i will say it looks like an oakland county which is high proportion of it's got your troy where you have african american voters. joe biden won almost every precinct. so i think that's actually, that's when you're thinking about 20:24 in november. that's something you want to see, but absolutely. they sent a very important signal and it was interesting today as our correspondents were talking to people, they made the point there weren't necessarily they've warning against joe biden, but they wanted to send a message. they wanted people to understand how powerfully they deeply people feel. what's interesting about those numbers that we just had up. i think it was 13.8% if they are able to get to 15% by, by dnc admitted i'm committed if uncommitted, disabled to get to 15% by our democratic party rules they would be able to accrue delegates. and what's out, what's meaningful about that is if other states also do this on uncommitted and make that 15% threshold. then you're talking a decent amount of potentially decent amount of delegates. and what did they do with that? do they take that to the to the convention? do they try to influence policy when we go through what's called the platform, could process, which is basically the policies of the party going into the convention. so that's something to watch, is sort of what are they organized enough to take this win? and then what will they do with it? this is >> something that i think is really interesting because i'm a former middle east correspondent. i spent a lot of time in the middle east and i understand that what they're asking for now is a ceasefire. but i can tell you that that's not going to be the end of things because once you have a ceasefire, first of all, it's going to be temporary because they're still negotiating secondly, we haven't really had access to gaza, but once international film crews get in there and see the damage and get to talk to the people you're going to have a lot of people who get their news from social media, young people who are seeing this war for the a war that they haven't seen this before for the first time all these images replaying over and over again. i just don't think that this issue is going to go away for the administration. i think it's going to perhaps you know, really impact what we see in other states and what a great point on that to my way, you could talk about that, but great point because what you describe is an uncertainty the campaigns have no idea when that might happen, when that shoe would listen. >> and i think some of this >> social media attention to this issue, it's already happening right on tiktok scene he saw images very heartbreaking images out of gaza, 30,000 folks did at this point. this is a real issue for joe biden because it cuts at a very important part of his base era. american voters obviously in michigan, i think there were something like 150,000 who voted in 2020, who they likely you voted mostly for joe biden. we see that pain showing up in the uncommitted vote in. so they have really got to figure this out. its black voters, it's arab american voters, it's young voters are it's highly educated voters as well. and then you're going to have a third party presence in some of these states and folks who are very much further to the left on this issue than joe biden. >> but one good, i think that's the concern for the president or for democrats. what happens when you have younger voters, younger voters of color having solidarity with the palestinian people. and you start looking at some of the battleground states. you realize the president didn't win by substantial margins. what does that look like? do some of those voters vote third party when you're doing corporate third party candidates like rfk junior, then you really start to see the maps changing drastically, more favor of trump. and i think the white house has to be very careful here because we do see that majority are about the palestinian people are going to zero. >> that's not what i'm saying. i'm saying the states could go in favor of trump if you see some of the younger individuals find his solidarity saying we're going to vote third party or stay home and are not vote at all >> i think >> that's a legitimate concern. and then finally, really quickly here i will say the president has to be careful. there are about 15% of moderate leaning republicans who voted for him in 2020. they support israel do you make a policy decision? the turn off some of those voters. >> a two quick things to mention. number one who's the person who has been pushing netanyahu the hardest that is joe biden on the phone night and day pushing him to care about the hostages initially, to continue to move him towards a tooth back to a two-state solution. to move him towards a ceasefire? and i think the hope of the administration is i completely agree with your point, lu but at the same time, if in three months, what we're seeing is an american, american leadership and rebuilding. then that's a very different imagery and that's what i will just say that bibi netanyahu is no friend of the democratic party necessarily. he has made that clear over his very, very long tenure. and he is in a very precarious situation himself where the incentive for him is to keep this war going as long as possible, because his entire political future is based i reelected, but it's really bleak. don't want i think part of what biden needs to do, you can talk about the comparisons with donald trump and what gaza would look like if donald trump were there and his muslim ban. but joe biden has gone to meet with these folks. he's got hear their pain. he's got to hear their stories. and we know there's pain obviously on both sides. jewish folks as well as arab americans here as well. joe biden has this sort of pastoral effect to him. he's needs to employ that he's got to go to these communities and talk to these folks. that's part of it. they don't feel seen, they don't feel heard tonight. they sent a big message surrogates are one thing the actual president in states there in person, a very different ball game. and i think you're all right. i mean, uncommitted. the phrase that they're using, but they're saying don't take our vote for granted, which is a very common sentiment among voters through particularly marginalized group, marginalized groups, everyone stick around because next the clock is ticking tonight towards a government shutdown. and my expression is because i'm so accustomed to be inefficiency of these moments washington. the clock is ticking yet again as congress has until this friday to reach a deal to avert another government shutdowns. senate republican leader mitch mcconnell and house speaker mike johnson. both met with president biden and other democratic leaders earlier today over at the white house. now after that meeting, mcconnell express some optimism around reaching a deal, saying that the group had made some real headway on this issue. my panel is back with me alice. at >> they're going to have to figure this out. i mean, this has been kicking the can down the road, kicking the can down the road. do you get the sense that mike johnson becae his cinnamon after the meeting was similar to mcconnell's, was that he was optimistic that they will make progress on the spending deal and avoid a government shutdown the problem is, if he is successful in that, the likelihood of him losing his position is very high because republicans in the house will not like caving in any way, shape, or form to agree with something that the democrats would support. here's the issue we have in washington right now. and this goes on both sides. republicans and democrats. >> it is >> so transactional right now we have, we have the government shutdown, we have israel, we have ukraine, even taiwan, all issues extremely important. each and every one of them on their own should seek bipartisan cooperation. but everyone wants to have transactions on washington. i'll give you x if you give me why that is extremely disingenuous to each of these issues, but it's dangerous. it causes conflict on all of these issues. but this is the situation we're in. i do think johnson will be able to make some progress, but it's going to be at his own peril. >> you know what, abby, i'm sorry. i don't think i don't think that it is that transactional. i think it's actually the opposite of transactional because if it was transactional, you could say, oh, i like this. i don't like this policy, but you do so i'll give you a little bit of that policy and will trade instead, it all seems political at all, feels like i don't want to give the other side of victory and that is the problem i think for getting these bills passed is the republicans, in particular in the house? because i think the senate is trying to do business. the republicans don't want to give the democratic president any kind of a victory in an election. >> yeah, because it's like i want x, i want i want x. well, here's x. never mind, i want z, i want whether republicans are doing right now. they did it on the border bill. they go in, they say it's >> optimistic and then he come, mike johnson comes out immediately pivoted, was like, what about the border and it's like, can we do multiple things at once? can you govern, can you do your job? and the answer is, they can, but they don't want to. >> also, republicans are simply ungovernable. i mean, it's not just because of jada. this is the speaker before. this is even the votes to get mccarthy there in the first place. this is consistent with them and it's partially because you have seen a republican caucus has transitioned from being one that's more top-down to the individual members having such power that they can be a kind of island of one to these demands that we're talking about, the republican kind of maga wing of the party is completely uncontrolled by the top, they can go on their own pockets, they can do, they can raise their own money, they can and, you know, speak directly to donald trump who was having his own imprint. they have a sense of power that's outside of where mike johnson. and so when these trying to wrangle them or even if there is any incentive to make government work, they are thinking politically and they've been rewarded for that by their base. and so i was just at cpac this week in washington, dc, a kind of, home of this kind of weighing. right. and they are celebrating the idea of a government shutdown. >> looking >> forward to that question is active. it's not >> even what i mean, is there a world in which republicans actually fund the government here because i mean, that's, this has been the question for about six months now. it seems like the answer is no. >> well, there are the far right maga wing of the house gop is perfectly fine with a government shutdown because they feel like that's a good way for them to get their points out there on the border and support for the border. the problem is mike johnson is a house speaker. donald trump is the house whisper. he is going around to all these house members saying, let's not pass border patrol, border control because we want to save that for our administration, which they had for years to do and they did nothing about it. that's the crux of the issues here is donald trump has such a stronghold on republicans in that in the house and the senate right now, that that is they want the perfect. perfect is the enemy of the good, and they'd rather get nothing than something all because donald trump wanted just to that exact point. i mean, the pressure that he's >> exerting is pretty extreme. you he had senator john thune endorsed him. and when mitch mcconnell was asked about this by manu raju, here's what he said. >> over the weekend. senator came out. trump together, lieutenant seven forced why are you holding out endorsing? it likely nominee. >> i don't have it in announcement today >> i have the chocolate that's a classic mitch mcconnell move i don't have any announcements on that today. i mean, is that a is that a no or is that i'm holding out? the possibility? because if there's one thing mitch mcconnell is, he is pragmatic and if he's got to endorse to get things moving, he'll probably do it. >> he is pragmatic. i mean, listen, there's this mar-a lago hotline. it feels like going on between florida and washington, dc in the capital remember when they were trying to get the first than kevin mccarthy and there was a video or a picture of marjorie taylor greene's phone as he had donald trump on the phone. he was talking to members on the floor while they were trying to get this done nobody else has power in this party. we all this except that in the house, maybe mitch mcconnell has a little bit of power left in the senate and he tried to hold onto it to see where he can get for endorsing trump but every other part of this party is run by donald trump >> every single republican event that i go to or trump event that i go to, there's a part would they boo mitch mcconnell like there is. this is a person who needs the trump weighing to keep that access to power. but the same time they need him because this is a kind of policy projects that they understand requires some something goishi asten of the senate. so there's a kind of transactional nature that puts them both and each other's camp. but i do think this is a little different of a trump operation this time, they are kind of pitching more frontally to their own voters that we are not going to be deferential to the swamp, quote, unquote, this time around come back. you can expect us to up end and that should be a part of your choice as we expectation of this campaign. and so i think that that was donald trump explicit always, but i think now it's an explicit promise of what they are offering to voters. i think we should think of a republican base, which at least for the hardcore slice, which is not the mature, which is not the 67% we're seeing tonight. but for some of them, they want that. yeah, if >> you're the democrats, you're actually making that very same argument that donald trump is going to come back and do all the things that he promised, but do them more effectively. that's actually the joe biden argument as well. everyone stick around for us coming up next. he was billed as star witness in the efforts swirlify the fulton county da fani willis, but a georgia lawyer could not deliver the promise testimony repeatedly answered that, either could not or did not recall tuesday's hearing ended without the damaging testimony that defense attorneys had expected. another hearing is scheduled for friday. and at that hearing, defense attorneys are expected to introduce phone data, which they got from subpoena, which they say shows thousands of phone interactions between willis and wade before they started dating laura >> thank you so much nic for saying on this case. i want to bring in my panel now with all the focus that we've seen, in this case well, we haven't heard about is obviously underlying facts about the case. this is not about the election subversion that's is more a bad. some would call it a procedural sideshow, although very significant mental. my question you look at all these things in connection. i'm often wondering who has got the harder hill to climb at this point? you've got biden confronting the uncommitted with foreign policy. you've got trump and his laundry list and a lot of things are legal issues. when you look at this expansively, who has the harder hill, which is going to be more of a problem for the voters. >> what do you think? >> listen, i'm going to come trading in the middle on this and say they both have an equal hill to climb here. we know what the issues are. i think one of these sort of underlying problems is it's all unpredictable. you can't tell what's going to happen with these court cases with donald trump. some of the polling does suggest if there is conviction, some republicans might waver a, little bit those independents certainly i'm sure what sort of question they're supporting of donald trump, if you use in fact convicted whether or not that happens, we don't really know in terms of joe biden. again, who knows what's going to happen on the ground in gaza with foreign policy, more generally, with both of their ages, right? these are min, he joe biden's 81. donald trump is 77, probably not the healthiest person i heard he eats to fish fillet sandwiches at a time. those are delicious sandwiches by the way but that's fine. i mean, i do love fried fish. i don't know that i love mcdonald's or fish, but anyway, i digress last season to season just like that. i have yes. yes. yeah. i think they both have identifiable issues in there sort of equally difficult for both sides has been one of the really interesting things for me when i look at joe biden and donald trump, is that this is the rematch from hell. i mean, i just can i say that? i mean, i don't want this. i don't know anyone else who wants this. i don't even think other than donald trump, i don't even think joe biden would have necessarily wanted this. and so when we look at these two people together and you see the polling, one of the things that comes up again and again and again is that people know who these two guys are, and they have real feelings about them either way. and the question is, how much movement is they're really going to be? that's why i guess what's happening in michigan. so interesting, that's why the ivf situation so interesting. can that move the needle? i mean, i don't know because truly when you talk to people, people have an opinion about donald trump people they either love him or they hated people now have an opinion about joe biden. they've seen him for three years, and so i just don't know how much movement there's going to be. there is no mythical i think in my opinion, independent voter that's going to come save the day. >> well, what about the issue of ivf, by the way, because this is, this is really we know that even since the dobbs decision, abortion was going to remain on the ballot, in many respects, this is part of why as a movement, we started talking about reproductive freedom over all, because it is all incoming but seeing and because once dobbs was overturned we saw it's not just access to abortion, its ivf, it's contraception, it's frankly discrimination against women when they're pregnant. and so there's a whole swath of issues. and how do you say to a woman, how are republican candidates going to say? i trust you to do complicated ivf, but i don't trust you to make the best decision for yourself about whether or not you should be pregnant. and i don't trust you to take that medicine. i mean, it's gonna be ridiculous. and so i actually think yes, both men have challenges. but i think joe biden actually has more positives to run on in terms of his actual record, was actually done for the country that look, they have not done a good job communicating it. i don't know where the disconnect is, but i'd rather have that hand and be moving that ball down the field. then the trump trials where as we saw in case after case is just so far you don't know what's going to come out. and so that is going to i think harden those people who already know they don't like donald trump militia. >> i think for trump, the best thing for him politically speaking is to try to delay these things as long as he possibly can as was mentioned, if he's found guilty significant portion of republicans, not just the ones who have supported nikki haley but even many of the ones that 60% that are voting for trump have said, we won't vote for a convicted felon to lead the country. so trump needs to try to delay this thing until beyond november 5. however, when you look at some of the pluses for trump compared to biden, people try mr. moore with the economy. they trust to more than immigration. they trust or more on the issue of handling some of the international crises that we're currently are facing is that republicans more broadband those? when you look at the data, it appears that voters writ large, writ large appear to trust trump more than biden on those issues. the economy isn't connecting with the average american person despite the fact that unemployment numbers are low the cost of goods he's very real saleable things for everyday people. they can't afford it. >> lore and i will say that it's polling that i've seen shows the kind we've to remember, like when we talk about democracy, the economy affects everybody differently, particularly with black voters. how black voters talk about the economy and think about it, is not the same it's, yes, it's groceries and gas. but it also has to do with money in their pocket. and if they are feeling like i am dealing with racism and bias at my job, then i'm not getting the pay that i deserve. that's an economic issue. >> most people can't even afford a thousand dollar emergency, particularly black >> but i think that's the problem >> isn't new. and so a lot of folks in these communities, black brown communities of working class communities, pave lived in these communities. maybe they sent their kids hbcus, the hbcu campuses are rundown and their neighborhoods rundown as well. and so you've got joe biden out there and kamala harris saying, listen, we've poured all this money into hbcus. there's so many jobs, but people don't feel it because they are living the same sort of you know, barely above water kind of existence. so that i think is one of the reasons is not connecting because you can explain what the unemployment rate is. but if people don't feel it, they don't feel it. you're not going to go to the ballot for you. >> and i think also you just see democratic surrogates all the time talking about the infrastructure bill. and yes, i mean, remember it was like every week was infrastructure week under the trump administration. and so when it finally happened, oh, my goodness. and it was a very impressive and consequential that of legislation. but the fact is it's dispersed all over the country. and it means road works and it means a lot of different things in different places. it means bridges, shore, but you have republicans taking credit for some of that money and saying, look what i brought to my district and so it's dispersed a lot of lot of the problem that this administration has had is really saying, look i've made your life tangibly better and let's not forget, we're coming out of a terrible time in america. the pandemic, where people still are hung over from that and so, you know in a way, it's hard for joe biden to do, right? >> right. right. i think we've been hard for anybody to do, right. i will remind you that the michigan governor won her first race on fix the roads. so that's an economic issue for biden. that's well, i have and that's an economic issue for a lot of people. >> i love a states of scandal with jake tapper, sunday at nine on cnn >> a super pac supporting rfk junior says that it has enough signatures to put them on the ballot in arizona and georgia so those are two key battleground states president biden beat former president trump in both states by the slimmest of margins. harry enten is here to tell us really how significant this is going to be. >> yeah. you mentioned slim margins. i'm not quite sure unless you go back to florida in 2000 where it was 500 37 vote, you're gonna get margins as slim is what we saw in 2020. and arizona, joe biden defeated donald trump by a little bit more than 10,000 votes. you go over to georgia a little bit less than 12,000 votes any slight thing could move the needle, abby, what's something that could slightly move the needle? how about if we introduce? robert f. kennedy jr. into the ballot test? all right, let's look at arizona. this is among likely voters in new york times sienna college poll back in october and november of last year, look at rfk getting 24% of the vote. how about in georgia, a similar 23%, that is really wild it is. but where's this vote coming from? coming from the trump column, the biden column, maybe a little of both. >> yeah. it's a little bit of both. i will note first that this is in fact the highest percentage to any independent candidate is pulled since ross perot's pulling back, not in 96, but in 1,992. now, you asked where is this vote coming from? okay. the biden versus trump, paul martin without kennedy and arizona, trump plus it's five width kennedy. look at this. it shrinks down to a time very significant change there. but in georgia, interestingly enough, we actually see the opposite pattern trump was up by five without kennedy. now you add kennedy and the equation and you get trump-plus seven. so i think there's some real question who this would help, who this would hurt. it's not necessarily thoroughly clear, like with a cornell west where i think we're pretty it's pretty clear that it would hurt joe biden kennedy, much less clear is where it would take votes from. >> where is he on the ballot? just in general? yes. so where are some other states that he's on the ballot? you mentioned arizona and georgia as possibilities. okay. rfk junior is ballot access. other states, biden won by less than eight points in 2020, the super pac that we spoke about earlier trying to get them on the ballot in michigan and nevada, both two very close states that biden won by less than three points. how about new hampshire? he's got the signatures there already that could be a surprisingly close date. i don't want it rather easily back in 2020, but in 2016, it was decided by less than a percentage points. so rfk could play a bit. i got it i tell you if it is a plurality victory for either biden or, you know, there's a psychological thing that is going to happen to this country if that's where the case harry enten. thank you very much. and thank is weighing in tonight on the 2024 fight for the white house, sending messages to both president job for biden and donald trump. i of their anticipated rematch in november. if you're just joining us. greetings, i'm jake tapper and i'm standing right in the cnn election center for president biden and former president trump are both michigan primary winners tonight, but that's not the full story of these very significant context. i want you to take a look at the votes in the democratic race. it's a warning sign for president biden there a protest vote for uncommitted gaining ground. now this protest vote pushed by opponents of how president biden is handling the israel hamas war. many of them desire a permanent ceasefire and they're demanding that united states government cut military aid to israel. let's take a look at these numbers with 19% of the estimated vote in president joe biden expectedly has 79.6% of the vote. that's a big chunk 154,576 votes. he's clearly the winner of the night's contest. he has 125,914 votes more than the number two, which is uncommitted with 14 of the vote. 28,662 votes in the rear dean phillips, a congressman 2.8% of the vote. but what i want you to understand is that normally in a primary, 20,000 people who vote uncommitted, we only have about 20% of the vote in. we've already far surpassed that so there is going to be a sizeable protest vote tonight that the biden team is going to have to contend with and worry about because in november it could come down to just a few thousand votes. remember trump won michigan with only 10,000 votes in 2016, biden won in 2020, 154,000 so that uncommitted, that's an important group of folks. >> now, let's >> look at the republican side. donald trump has scored another decisive win against nikki haley. this propels him closer to the republican in presidential nomination with these blockbusters, super tuesday contests, just one week away. so trump's dominance is clear, but haley is arguing that mr. sure. trump is failing to unite the republican party, and she continues to peel away much of the republican vote. let's take a look at that. 20% of the estimated vote then donald trump has we expected is in the lead. he is the projected winner, 66.5% of the vote. he has 192,910 votes that's 109,777 votes ahead of nikki haley, who is 28.6% of the vote. that's 83,304 >> but as i noted earlier, it is important to remember the narrow margin of victory in michigan. joe biden? no, no who doubt about it is going to be targeting these 83,304 people who don't want to vote for donald trump, even though he's clearly going to be their nominee. >> so let's let's talk about this all with john king, who is standing at the magic wall and there's a lot going on here, even though for contests where there are two decisive victories, i have to say there is a lot going on here. >> we've said this throughout the primary so far about former president trump, but we're going to say tonight about president biden and even as you see their strengths, and both candidates have considerable strength on nights like this, you also see their weaknesses, or at least there are places where they need to do repair slips are showing that 15%, 15% of the vote tonight, you have a democratic incumbent president, 3% voting for congressman phillips. so if you just want to say, i want someone else, you had an opportunity. this is an i'm mad at you it's a protest vote. the bulk of it the bulk of that is about the israel hamas conflict and the view of arab americans, younger voters and others liberals that the president is too quick to side with netanyahu not doing enough for the palestinians. the white house would argue, wait a long time since october 7, pay attention, but here's the president has repair work to do here it's interesting. the repair work you look at 15% in a key battleground state that tends to pick our president's. so it'd be one of the two or three to pick our presence. you say, where's the problem? i would argue and we're still waiting by the way, this is the most important part. how high does the number go? how high is the number of votes and the percentage statewide by the end of the night for uncommitted depends on wayne county and we're nowhere in the count 4% that is quite traditional. what are they doing that now? that is quite traditional. i've been doing this a long time and wayne county, gary, indiana, i could go on, but we'll just stick with wayne county right now for in michigan, it takes them a long time to count the votes so we're waiting for that, but that's going to have a huge say both in your total number because it's the population center and it's also were dearborn is it's detroit, it's dearborn total number and the percentage. but just to make a point here, if you look if you come up here, just to look, let's just pick over here. kent county, the suburbs, grand rapids in the suburbs around it uncommitted here we're getting right now, 12% of about 14%. so not saying that's, that's a wound are the president biden has has to heal, but then you come here, debbie dingell was just talking about this washington county where the university is. it's above 20%. the targeted problem for the president is younger voters and the arab americans, muslim americans, people of middle eastern descent, 300,000 of them live in the state of michigan. that's that's where in >> arbery's or no? no. and arbery's where i just showed you. yes, this is where arborists yet and arberys here and i was on the university of michigan. i've been on that campus and just it's high the anger, the temper, the frustration is high and you have people there saying a lot of academics, two a lot academics, but a lot of young people, a lot of young people who voted for biden in 2020, some of whom say they're voting on tonight as a protest, they're not donald trump fans. there was one young man we talked about. there is actually from georgia, helped the aclu registered voters 2020 to help joe biden win, who said he's going to vote third party. now he has now it's easy if people at home ago he has socialist leanings his way left. people go, oh, just one kid, whatever he's a socialist, but in a competitive election, every vote counts, you'll people say a lot of democrats say the same thing about trump voters speak of them and disparaging ways. you have one vote, i have one vote. they have one vote. about whether the elections are close. that's what matters. but you do see that that's why this wayne county vote is so important because you do see it's 24% now, early on. so the president has some healing to do. and it's very important in the state so close, it will be targeted mostly in the detroit area and on the college campuses, doesn't mean it doesn't exist elsewhere. but that's the biggest part of the problem. and jake, you see the same exact thing. on the other side, the haley campaign, it's hard to argue with their points tonight. i'm committed to getting 15% right now, and we're saying joe biden has some work to do well, she's getting 30% and we're saying that's an overwhelming win. both things are true, but both things are true. he has some work to do to again, if you look at the map, where's the work? you come up with some of these rural counties, you just pick one out up here donald trump is getting 77%. the rural base of the trump party is still with trump. then you come down to macomb county here. the blue collar base of the new trump republican party is with donald trump. but then just drive a little bit, leaves slim shady, and come over here to the suburbs and look like what happens. nikki haley gets 30% in the suburbs. donald trump still has, even as he rolls to the republican nomination, still has weaknesses in american suburb. that's why joe biden's president and just keep in mind, this is who turned out to vote, right? it's the people who turned out to vote. and it's pretty clear. i'm sure to everybody who votes what did today, the donald trump's going to be the nominee and they still turned out to vote for nikki haley. so in many ways, they're voting for nikki haley. but in others, it's a protest vote just as much as uncommitted. >> so how much of those uncommitted come home, and how much a harder to either harder to get home or refused to come home. it's the very same question there. how many of those republicans who will vote? vote for him in november? they just prefer her today. and how many ever saying okay. i can't vote for him. so once she's done, assuming that soon, if it happens, unless it's a miracle, where did they go? >> if there's any good news for joe biden in this, it is some of these people are going to be gettable. some of these nikki haley people are going to be good for biden. i don't know how many of the uncommitted people are gonna be gettable for trump, maybe for jill stein, maybe for cornell west, but for trump, i don't know. the other thing is that nikki haley's number is much bigger. let's go to dearborn. now, the center of this protest movement, jeff zeleny is there covering the democrats and the protest for uncommitted the protest vote. jeff, what are proponents of that protest vote saying about them? the results tonight as they come in >> jake, we have just stepped outside the event, celebrating the success in their view of this uncommitted movement. here we are in dearborn, of course, the heart of the arab american and muslim american population. sharon is john was talking, we are in wayne county so those are the numbers that are still going to be coming in and that is likely to add it is going to add a significant margin to the uncommitted, but regardless of the final number, organizers here and supporters here, they believe they have already won a measure of success because they believe they've sent a message loud and clear to president biden, and indeed they have we've seen his language change in recent months. the question is, what do the voters and the organizers do from here forward, just a short time ago, the house democratic floor, a leader of the michigan state house. he said, we are going on to chicago. we are going to the democratic national convention to protest in the streets this antiwar movement is growing. so that is not going to go away. this is something that is going to continue and it will be a soundtrack of this presidential campaign. there is no doubt about that. however, talking to another businessman who was just leaving this event, just a few moments ago. he said he voted uncommitted because he did want to register a protest vote. >> i said, how will you >> vote in november? he said, i don't know. once it becomes a choice, he said between president biden and former president donald trump. he said he desperately wants to keep donald trump out of the white house. we said that will be a difficult decision to make. i suspect that he sums up the sediment of many rank and file of voters who voted uncommitted today, of course, the organizers are committed to this cause, but this is something that is going to stay with the white house, stay with the president now, uncommitted votes are not necessarily an, a common occurrence. i remember thinking back to the 2012 campaign barack obama also had some uncommitted on the ranks. the difference here is the substance of why it is uncommitted. it is because of the war. it's because of the president's handling of the war. and that is a burning issue here that is so deeply personal and jake, that is not likely to change anytime soon unless there is a permanent ceasefire and we all know how difficult that will be. >> jan. tsai war protesters taking to the streets of chicago for the democratic national convention. what could, what could go wrong? jeff zeleny, thanks so much during our conversation now the national co-chair for the biden harris presidential campaign and former senior adviser to president biden, former mayor of new orleans, mitch landrieu. i used to be somebody, you is now you're saying here with us how do i get stuck on this panel? >> this has a moussa flex from a group that is not happy with joe biden and they are making a point. >> yeah. what can i make a point, please? 80% 80% i mean, that's the fourth one that we've been in. joe biden had a really, really strong night tonight. you can't cut it any other way than that. that is not to say that the uncommitted vote wasn't substantial the sending a message, the president, as you know, has gotten the message the president has sent the number of senior advisers out to michigan to talk about this. this is a very complicated issue. the president continues to make sure that we put american interests first and is working hard as you know on humanitarian aid, working on a ceasefire so that we can actually get the hostages out and continues to listen to this very difficult pain that communities are going through all across the country, both in the jewish community and then muslim and the palestinian community. well, that message that has been delivered, it's going to keep getting delivered in the president is going to continue to listen, but let's just make the point about what happened in michigan tonight. donald trump got 66% of the vote. nikki haley got 30, whatever she got, that's a big chunk of change yeah. and joe biden got 80 and uncommitted got 14. so you would much rather be joe biden tonight that donald trump, because at the end of the day, when people focus in on this race is going to be joe biden in the future versus donald trump in the past. and people are going to really have to make a decision about what direction they want the country to go with the campaign initially sent up some campaign advisers and important people in michigan, like the mayor of dearborn said, no. i want to hear from the policy people. and then the white house said some policy people. yeah. once he going to go when the when is the president going to go? i don't know. i'm sure at some time, many of us have because they want to be heard the way to be heard is to actually have this one. remember, >> when the friend, when the first, i think when the campaign manager when they said we really want to talk to people, as you know, the next week, they said really three senior people and the meeting, although it was tough and it was hard, was it was a heartfelt meeting where the leaders took back to the white house with a weather thoughts while i was in michigan last week, i was in flint, michigan. also was with some folks from the operating engineers. i talk to pastors in the african-american community. we talked to law enforcement got a great response, but to be clear, the president hears what it is that the folks in michigan is saying and what the uncommitted team is asking us to think about. and he's putting that into his thought about how to move forward on this very complicated, very difficult issue, which as you know we're really not driving the train on and it is not something that's going to be easy. you saw the president, i think yesterday getting ice cream when somebody asked him, well, what's going on with this and he said, look, i expect from my advice is hopefully to have some news on great humanitarian aid. and then of course, hopefully at least a temporary ceasefire so they can get the hostages out, which is a critical problem. but the president believes that people ought to voice their opinion. people in michigan and doing that. and of course, people across the country will continue to do that and he will take that into consideration as he moves forward on this very complicated and difficult issue, mr. mayor, we just brought in this conversation out for a second. if i understand that the election is not until the fall, if the election were today, would joe biden lose reelection? i don't think so. >> what is it about the state of michigan, do you think it is behaving with its battleground status substantially different than some of the other battleground states is there, is it just this you should that we're talking about as there's something else going on that you think that you and the team in wilmington see in the data that michigan son how is proving more problematic for joe biden at this time in the campaign than some of the other battle. well, that's an actual question. i'll leave it up to you guys who could run and gals, i can run the numbers better than i can. each state is different. new hampshire's different, of course carolina, south carolina is different from nevada. nevada is very different from michigan. michigan is a very diverse state. it does have a very heavy muslim population and so because of this particular issue, whether you can compare it to other states, not i mean, i really don't know. you made a comment just before i think in 2012, just to remind everybody 60 delegates obama lost in michigan and then went on to do really fairly well and they will uncommitted almost in every campaign that approximate they may be a little bit low. they may be a little higher. so it's not a death sentence. it's a challenge that you have to work through on the other side of the aisle, if you're donald trump and nikki haley's clocking in 40%. and then she's clocking in 30%. and in the exit polls, half of those people are saying, i'm never voting for trump that's a real serious problem. this one's a serious problem that we have to deal with. we have to work through and at the end of the day, the president has to make the case that he's the one that can help provide the better future for american, i think joe biden's got the receipts on this i mean, all of you have covered joe biden's presidency. joe biden, creative 15 million jobs. we have the lowest unemployment rate. we now have 46,000 infrastructure projects going on across the country. we have $650 billion of private sector investment and we've got the receipts. you got a guy. otherwise, it just talks about things that is now talking about oppression, revenge, and actually looking backward. and i think when americans look at that choice really clearly and the fairy dust leaves the eyes of all the and that's about how it's not going to be biden or it's not going to be trump, it is going to be them. but then, then then we're going to really kind of get down to breath. what did the accounts though for the fact that biden is underperforming his coalition with people who brought him to the presidency in 2020 matches muslim vote, american voters, young voters, pulls to these struggling with hispanic voters black voters also, why is the president having such a hard time convincing those voters? >> well, you say that because you've been looking at the polls, but when you look at the results from the primaries, he did exceedingly well in every primary that he said clocking in at 85, 90, 96%, but he's got to win some of these voters back to, well, yeah, and so on. nikki haley's people are looking for someplace to land too. so it's about building coalitions. but at the end of the day, it's about a choice about what kind of america you want to live in. and joe biden has it has painted a picture of what the future of american you can look like that includes everybody that actually builds things from the bottom up in the middle out, donald trump continues to talk about revenge. he continues to talk about given tax breaks to the rich and continues to talk about trying to find a way to find immunity if you can for him to order seal seal team six to kill political opponents that on a freeze, everybody in their tracks right away about what we're facing and how much worse donald trump's going to be, then how bad he was the first time he was in office. but can we talk about the issue on >> the table here, which is this uncommitted vote. but the president's policies as his support for netanyahu in the middle east. >> do >> you think there is any his support for israel? it's important for israel and the manifestation of that is the support for the prime minister of israel, which is netanyahu. but it's actually interesting that you corrected me because don't you think that the kind of result that the president wants and is pushing for will not happen. by his own words, with benjamin netanyahu as prime minister and if that's the case, does netanyahu does president biden want? benny gantz to drop out of the war cabinet and run against him for prime minister. well, i'm not going to get get ahead of the president on any of those things. and i'm not going to pretend to be jake sullivan. you can ask him that when he comes on on on your program i made a made that point because the the president, as you know, has been a big supporter of visual, israel has a right to exist. israel has a right to protect itself and the president has historically been there. that's where he is now. he also has demonstrated, i think think in the last month or so about the commitment that he has to make sure that he's pushing as hard as he can on the leaders of visual who by the way, the president does not get to choose that's why this is really complicated, because the american president can't say who he wants to prime minister of israel to be. you have to work with who is there, but the president has put, as you know, publicly, he said, i'll put pressure on bb to do the things that i need him to do in the most humanitarian way as possible. war is, as you know, this war is really hard. all of the pictures, all of the deaths on both sides are awful. it's a terrible situation that's very complicated, difficult in the president will continue to prosecute his case publicly. and of course, as you know, privately, very aggressively as it this team has been doing. >> he said that you did spend some time in michigan, including flint. what did you hear from the community there? i assume that you spend some time with the african-american community what did you hear about their concerns? we've been talking a lot tonight about uncommitted and of course that is about the mideast. but as manu was talking about, there are other areas >> i think there are a lot of americans is women what are generally heard in the meetings that hour in his thanks to the president who finally delivering on promises that have been made in the african-american community, the funding for hbcus, of course, when we were in flint, we will actually talking about the president's commitment to make sure that everybody has so they want to all, all of all of the pipes in flint now have been replaced. small business help, also making sure that jobs are available. so when we when we talk to local, the local operating engineers, they were thrilled about the infrastructure projects that we're going on, that we're creating high paying jobs. the sheriff's of that particular county said to me, please put me on tv so i can tell the people how much law enforcement thanks him. for the work that he's doing. this is a campaign. everybody now has an opportunity to say to the president, what do i need going forward and what people really want at the end of the day is they want a country that is forward-looking. they want a country that's inclusive. they want a country that actually gives people from the bottom the middle, up an opportunity, which is what the president has done and listen >> he's got the receipts 15 million jobs donald trump lost 2.5 million jobs. that's 17 million jobs weighing that's a big deal, no matter where you count it. and when we tell the people about that, the choice is really clear because i have a lot of faith and the american citizens that there's the president joe biden is going to get reelected again. >> all right. >> mate andrea, thank you so much for being here really appreciate it. thank you. thanks. valley, as we get more and more votes in from the state of michigan, we're going to get a read on what we're learning from tonight's results and the prospects for michigan voters to be the cnn >> we have key race alert time for you now let's look at the board with 24% of the estimated vote in an incumbent president joe so biden is of course the winner of the michigan democratic party primary rather 79.7% of the vote, 184,149 coates. that's more than 150,000 votes, more than number two, which is uncommitted, which has 14.5% of the vote and dean phillips bringing up the rear with 2.8 8%. but as we noted earlier michigan generally has 20,000 people who vote uncommitted, but there is an effort to have a protest people who don't like president biden's support of prime minister netanyahu and israel. they want to cease fire. they want military aid to israel and then they were calling for an uncommitted committed vote. so on top of the 20th thousand that we normally expect, we have an additional now 33,492 total. and it's only a quarter of the voting so that is the significant story of the night. in addition to president biden pores winning the democratic primary, let's go to the republican side now donald trump, of course, we've declared third him the winner of the michigan republican primary. he is 66.7% of the vote. that's 237,243 votes, 136,000 housing and change ahead of nikki haley, who has 28 of the vote. nikki haley with 100,630 votes. and again, as i said before, about the uncommitted vote that is 100 thousand people, republican voters in michigan who do not want donald trump to be the nominee. >> where are they going to go in november? that is the conundrum, and that is why we are watching this race with fascination and bated breath. john king, where the votes coming in from, you make a key point. people watching at home are going to say on the one here, well, this is a blow up sure. why are they saying there's something to learn here? >> i will. there's a there's always something learned, but b, you have to essentially incumbents joe biden for the democrats, donald trump, the former president for the republicans, who have giant strengths and yet significant, important weaknesses worth studying as you go forward for the incumbent president noted states male andrew was just trying to make the point 80% to 50%. okay. not to be rocket scientists, you could do the math at home. sure. however, that's an unhappy protest vote against the president because of issues today or the last several months, most of that is because of people who disagree with his conduct, his siding with netanyahu, which is near view over siding with netanyahu in the israel-hamas conflict there, arab americans, they're younger voters, they're more and so where are they? we still, this is the frustration tonight, but the frustration every election i'm on detroit, michigan, they they council wayne county. wayne county account slowly we love baseball. wayne county count slowly those things will never change. yeah, that's apparently that's the way it goes. you move over here. this is interesting again, as i was saying earlier, you try to, where's your weakness bigger? college county. this is washington are county is where university of michigan and arbor campuses. so the presence, the healing, the presence is going to have to do if he's going to get these people back, is to get on college campuses. number one and talk to young people who also who, even before that, there's an age disconnect even before that we saw some evidence to present had problems with younger voters then the other issue is going to be jeff zeleny has been on several times tonight. he's right here. i 94 out of detroit. you get to dearborn. it is a thriving wonderful arab american community and they are very, very mad at the president. they help elect that they just are, they are very, very mad at a precedent. they help elect the question is now uncommitted tonight. where are you in november? and it's 24% in wayne county right now, that math is going to go up as we get more votes without a doubt. so you have strength but a weakness? and if you flip the table, you see the same. because if we're, if, again, the haley campaign is saying this, i'm not just repeating them to repeat them there's some basis to it. if joe biden's has issues at 15%, well then why doesn't donald trump have issues? when i'm at 28% and she is correct. and again, you look at where those issues are, which is fascinating to me in blue collar macomb county. this is again, these people used to be democrats than there was the big fight about reagan democrats in the '80s and early '90s. they are trump republicans now. but creek carried macomb county. this is the big fight. will the united auto workers endorsement helped joe biden? can you get the teamsters endorsement? can he convince blue collar people to come back to him? well, tonight, the republicans in macomb county, michigan are saying we are still with him, right? that's not a big number. it's still 18%, but then you come over here to the suburbs and it goes to 32. i mean, these people don't live that far from each other, but this is blue collar. this is more upscale suburbs. that's donald trump's kryptonite or the american suburbs, without a doubt, as you watch it play out. and yet and yet donald trump is five and run on the table yes. >> six, no, if you count the virgin islands and let me just slide over one second right here for me. and so two weeks from tonight, two weeks from tonight, if this continues at the pace that is right now you see where he is right now. he's going to get the bulk of the michigan delegates. she may get four or five, depending on that statewide hi percentage there, maybe more, maybe less. but two weeks from tonight. we're on a path to that. but unless she somehow starts beating him, she's he is undefeated. unless she somehow it turns this tide, which nobody, there's no data to suggest that's about to happen. all the data is to the contrary two weeks from tonight, even though yes, he has weaknesses, he's going to be the republican nominee. >> so just to go back to the number for one second, and i just wanted to show show the biden, the democratic number here in michigan for one second. and i just want to people at home to remember this. okay. so this is 35,046 and maybe some democrats saying why are you making such a big deal out? i mean, the number is going to be bigger. we only got a quarter of the vote in its 35,000. so theoretically that could be 140,000 maybe i'm just extrapolating, but it's 35,000. let's just stick with that because that's an actual number. okay. let's go to the republican one now, 35,000 uncommitted. and for nikki haley, 107,640 and probably a lot of people at home, republicans or democrats, trump's supporters, biden supporters are saying it's not really that many people just remember. in 2016, donald trump won michigan with the won by about 10,000 votes. he won by one by about 10,000 votes. and in 2020, joe biden won michigan by about 154,000 votes. so these small margins can cost the candidates. the state come november, anderson, let's go to kylie atwood covering the nikki haley campaign from the salt lake city, utah, one of the super tuesday states. they haley's competing in next week. so 15 states, kiley vote a week from today, how's the haley camp planning? to take on this key tests. i mean, this is it for them >> this is it. anderson will put, this is the most consequential week to date for nikki haley's campaign. and she herself has raised the stakes incredibly high because when she's asked about the american people, the republican party siding with trump, she often points out that only a few states have voted, but then she points out that after super tuesday, there will be more than 20 states and territories that have voted. and so she has put the stakes incredibly high for her campaign leading into that week. now by super tuesday, she will have visited ten states that are going to vote on that day. we are in utah. that's one of the state she's gonna be visiting here tomorrow and her job is really twofold as she's out on the campaign trail this week. first, of course, trying to win over those voters, but then second is trying to raise new campaign cash. she had her most successful fundraising month to date in january, but we don't know how much campaign cash her campaign currently has in the bank. it's noteworthy that in the 48 hours since the south carolina find a primary, even though she lost it, she was able to haul in $2 million in new donations. that's what a campaign official tells me. but also this weekend or sin, we should note that the koch political network, afp, also decided that they are no longer going to be boosting her campaign. they're going to be focusing on down ballot candidates instead so with those two realities, it is important for her when she's headed to these states, she's going to meet with donors as well to try and get more cash into to her campaign bank account in order to fuel her campaign if she wants to go past super tuesday, anderson, kelly, i would think so much even as nikki haley is losing another primary contests of donald trump nij tells our dana bash she's committed to staying in the race at least through the super tuesday contests next week >> you're committing that you are going to be in this race through super tuesday i mean we are in all the super tuesday states now. that's what this is all about, is making sure that we hit every state and led oh, yeah. no. >> look, there is a voice out there for you. there is a way out. yes, we are fighting through. yes. >> yes. unequivocally, urine through super tuesday absolutely. add we have a country to save. absolutely >> here we're the team in new york. so david, you during the break, you were asking the question, what is haley's end game? >> yeah. because you don't you know, she's not talking about delegates anymore. she's not really suggesting that she's going to win this contest you saw the math that john king you just put up on the board. but she she said we are offering voters a life raft from what she thinks is going to be disaster in the fall. and it feels like she's sort of setting herself up for the post-trump era. if trump loses in the fall that she is going to be the one who said, i stood up for for principle. i told you that this was going to be we need to take a different direction. the thing is though, when you heard the conversation with dana and we know what nikki haley stands for, shiza she's a strong on national security fiscal conservative. she is the kind of republican that once was the dominant republican in the party that is not the drift of the republican party now, so the question is she fighting to lead a party that doesn't want to go? she has provided a life raft. no one has scrapped or just a two thirds of people are in scrambling into the boat. >> but i would argue, sorry. i would argue the question is less, what is nikki haley going to do next? how was donald trump going to get the 30 to 40 >> she's >> consistently held. there are deep substantive differences between nikki haley and donald trump. she's not an election denier. she supports aid to ukraine. we've not talked about this tonight. this is one of the biggest issues happening in our country, but internationally right now. and there are republicans who will not be are with republicans if they continue to block this aid package. she's talking about budgets and deficits. there are p she is making real contrast to donald trump. and even if just say ten of her supporters can never for be with donald trump, that is enough to hold him up in a general election and keep so are you saying that? so what i'm so explain how this all plays out. are you saying he should change his position on these issues? are you saying that he does not have a winning coalition right now? he's running on attacking ivf taylor swift football in people want to normal republican party this one-third of normal republicans who are grasping for anything else, many of them will not be with we have here. >> well, first, we haven't heard from me. >> look, i do think you're right that donald trump is demonstrating a lot of weaknesses as he has every time he has run for president today. >> the one thing though >> is that i do think that we've seen evidence of republicans generally coming home to the republican party. many republicans probably that you know, who don't like donald trump but would not cast a vote for joe biden and cast a vote for trump and set as the lesser of two evils. so we have to keep in mind that that is still on table for probably a large swath of that 30%. but as it relates to nikki haley and what she's doing, it does strike me just in listening to her tonight and listening to her over the last few weeks, she is making a case for herself, not maybe not in this cycle, but maybe in the next one. she's the last woman standing. she's putting up 30%, 40% against donald trump and doing so in a way that i think she thinks is leaving herself open to the possibility of being able to run when trump can't be on the ballot again. and saying, well, it's just time to turn the page, look at what i did the last time because people like ron desantis are not sitting on their hands right now. they're preparing for the next go round. and by staying in this race, she really shows that she has the ability to go the longer she stays in, the more votes she gets, the more money she raises, the more name id she gets. this is not bad for her are you able to say million lawyers for sorry, knew that a point of no return. so i'm agreeing with abby. she really has nothing to lose, but let us not forget she has weaknesses to me. she couldn't even when her own state and we're also making an assumption that even when mr. trump is not running for president, he's still going to hold what enormous sway over the party. and there is a disconnect between the republican party that nikki haley is talking about and the republican party that is. and my last point, she denied she's the candidate that denied what the civil war, while the civil war started and a lot of people are not going forget that, especially the african american community not just mr. donald j. trump that has deficiency. she does too. but the point about what type of republican party will do is continue to be, i believe that former president donald j. trump is going to have sway over this party for many, many decades. >> there a couple of points i wanted to make. the first is that this is why when we juxtapose the racist night, i believe that joe biden's having a much stronger night and donald trump, i mean, we have that 33, 34,000 voters that are uncommitted and the biden white house has to be extremely careful not to just discard that. they need to listen to the emotions of those voters, hear them out and understand what their anger is from. that's first but, sir, no. >> but the other >> thing that is very important is that donald trump has his grip on the republican party. this is donald trump's republican party nobody can duplicate that, not even nikki haley. what is she going to do to maintain any relevance over the next? >> even spend money in michigan and she spent years because they're not voting for her. >> they voted bring against him, correct? >> it's that'll matter in a general >> this time i'd have to respectfully disagree with my friend bakari is going to bode well for me i'm getting your your, your followers back. audience from us agreeing earlier. >> this is a big enthusiasm gap if you look right now, there's 26, 27% of the vote in between the democratic turnout, the republican turnout the republican turnout is right now far trouncing the democratic turnout and that's the percentage of the total vote that we're waiting to come in. it'll be interesting to see what comes in from wayne county. yes, i get that. but president trump's number at the moment is actually more than all of the democratic party primary voters together. so i would say that president trump when looking at the amount of people who are coming out to vote for him tonight would be very encouraged by the amount of votes standard she is getting compared to all the democrats who have shown up >> it's a really the important point here is i just i just wanted to say what this underscores is, how much each candidate is relying on the other candidate to organize the vote that they don't have right now to come home in november. >> so recorder or the michigan vote is and we're keeping an eye on the total for the uncommitted vote on the damage up next, a key advocate of that protest campaign joins us, discuss the message being sent to the president tonight. lot coverage of the michigan primaries, and we're just getting new reaction from president biden to the results and his victory as well as the strong protest vote for uncommitted in the democratic contest. let's check in with mj lee at the white house. mj, what is the precedent have to set okay yeah, we've just gotten the official statement from president biden via the campaign. it doesn't make any explicit reference to the the uncommitted campaign, but it does acknowledge the fact that voters spoke out tonight. here's what the statement says in part. i want to thank every michigander who made their voice heard today, exercising the right to vote and participating in our democracy percy is what makes america great. the president says four years ago was michigan siversk coalition that came together to reject donald trump's maga, extremism and sent me and camila to the white house. and because of michiganders, we've been able to work hand-in-hand with governor whitmer and the incredible democratic leaders in michigan's congressional delegation to deliver enormous progress. he goes on to talk about how despite all of this progress, there's a lot of work to be done and says that donald trump is threatening to drag us even further into the past as he pursues revenge and retribution. so clearly there is this quick allusion to the uncommitted effort and the fact the voters went out and spoke their minds. but that quick pivot to the general election, which is really what we've seen the biden campaign do over the last many weeks, you know, the white house and the president is certainly concerned and very much knows that this tonight, what we saw in michigan very much represents the anger and the frustration that so many people are feeling across the country, particularly as the israel-hamas war is dragging on. and i do think that this is why we have seen such a significant shift in rhetoric from the president in the recent days, including yesterday when we heard him talking openly about wanting to see a ceasefire these are all issues at the white house is grappling with and hoping that things can get better as the war changes to a different part and a different stage in the fighting. and of course they understand the important constituencies that are at play in michigan and they're saying that it is not a monolith ballistic state and they know that it is not a single issue stayed and certainly that there are a number of different kinds of constituencies that they are fighting hard to hopefully win over come novak remember jake, all right. >> mj lee, thanks so much. let's go to john king now. john, you have some new information about the uncommitted vote? >> yes. a couple of important new ways to look at this jake, including the first votes from dearborn where you saw jeff zeleny at the dinner where they were organizing the big problem protests obviously, that is ground zero for the muslim american population in michigan, forgive me, i just don't pull up this blackboard here. first. the first i want to show you, wayne county, dearborn is right here to the west of detroit. these are the wayne county results has been frustrating. wayne county always count slow or they're only a 4% of the estimated vote. we know that none of this that you're seeing president biden at 71% uncommitted, a 24%. this does not include any votes from dearborn, but cnn has obtained from the city some of their vote counts. so let me pull up this blackboard here and i'll write them in for you. forgive me for turning my back, but i'm left-handed. let me move this over here. i'm gonna put this here. these are the unofficial results from the city of dearborn. but on city letterhead, this is what joe biden received. again, forgive me, 1,141 votes. dean phillips 54 votes an uncommitted make sure i get this right >> 3,000 votes, so that's a wow, if you look at it this way, this is 23% and this, is 75%. >> and so >> this is just the city of dearborn, but that is where the biggest pocket of the muslim american, the arab american population. this is a place president biden carried big-time in 2020. this is key to his chances of defeating donald trump in michigan. again, now, 75% to 23% in the city of dearborn. we're waiting to get even more results from wayne county. but this just tells you again, it's going to raise the total number without a doubt, let me turn this off. that's uncommitted. yes. i'm committed to 75%, 23% for president biden, which is going to raise number one, those 3,700 votes are not reflected in the 2000 there from wayne county. so it's going to raise the numbers in wayne county to begin with, and it's going to obviously raise the percentage in wayne county when you see the lopsided percentage of this right there. so you see in the city, we were looking at most closely for how mad how mad are people at the president. that's a very significant number out of dearborn. that's one way to look out. i just want to also come back and look at it this way. so we're looking at the state of michigan. there are about 300,000 people who live in the state who family roots tie back to the middle east region, 200,000 muslim americans live in the city of michigan. so let's take this and look through a demographic lens of the michigan muslim population. let me move this up so you can see it a little better. the darker the yellow are the orange, the more brown here. that's that's dearborn. that's wayne county. and the darker the color, the higher the percentage of muslim americans, right? so remember that, remember where you see the growth in the concentration of the muslim population. and so now we're going to say where are the votes for uncommitted that we have so far? where are they coming from? so we're going to bring this in and lay it over it right here. the larger the circle the higher the vote for uncommitted in that area. remember, you see those big circles. where are they? they're over wayne county, there are over dearborn, they're over those other surrounding suburbs right around detroit, where you have the largest muslim american population. so yes, uncommitted is getting votes everywhere. but the big concentration tells you jake, the president's big problem. muslim i'm americans who were critical, absolutely critical to his big margin in michigan in 2020 are telling the president tonight that they are mad. indeed, john king, thanks so much joining us now is a key supporter of the protest vote for uncommitted in tonight's primary former democratic congressman, andy levin of a michigan, congressman. thanks so much for joining us. you're one of the leading voices who urged democrats to vote uncommitted today, to send a message to president biden to support a ceasefire and to end military aid to israel. did this protest achieve what you hope to would right now, we're at let me look at the board here. you're about to hit 40,000 votes for uncommitted with just only a 31% of the overall estimated vote in. so you're headed to big numbers. did this achieve what you want? it? >> i mean, this is historic jake. it looks like there'll be over 100,000 uncommitted voters in michigan joe biden won michigan by 154,000 votes in 2020. and this is not in the presidential contest. this is in a primary where there was no drama and no uncertainty, right? we know joe biden is going to be our nominee. so it's very, very significant outcome. i don't take any joy in it. i hasten to say my idea of this was not that i was going to go out and get people who are otherwise going to come out and vote for the president to vote uncommitted my worry was that this this primary would happen and the president wouldn't get the message about how mad people are so i was saying to all those arab american and other muslim and african american and young and all these other voters who are so mad at the president about gaza, don't stay home don't stay home, go out and shake your fist. go to the ballot box and tell the president you're mad. otherwise he won't know. and i think that message is being effectively communicated tonight. >> congressman, it's dana bash. i want to ask about something that the democratic floor leader of the michigan house said and that is that this movement is onto chicago meaning the democratic convention, which is going to happen this summer, is that a sign that you don't think that the president is going to be responsive to what you just described as unplanned precedented tonight in michigan >> know. i mean, we will have uncommitted delegates from michigan because of this big vote. but dana, my goal here personally was to get through to the president's campaign that there is no political solution to this problem i don't see how we can win the white house. again without winning michigan. and i don't think we can win michigan unless the president changes course on gaza there's no surrogates. he can send. there's no wonderful advertising. he can do. i mean, what a great surrogate. we have our own governor. that's not the problem. the problem is that he has to actually change course. we need a permanent ceasefire now we need to stop letting benjamin netanyahu set the boundaries of the possible. this is a person who has never been for palestinian self-determination in his life. i'm a jew who cares a lot about self-determination for my people. dana but the only way we're going to have a secure and peaceful homeland for my people is to also realize the political and human rights of the palestinian people netanyahu won't help that happen okay. we've got a president who was the chair of the senate foreign relations committee for so long, who's known all the leaders of israel and palestine for so long, he needs to now lead a peacemaking effort. that can change the way voters here feel about him. there's nothing he can say. it's gotta be about what he does. thank you. thank you. former congressman andy levin. appreciate your time tonight. >> thank you >> jonah, your thoughts >> what you can feel his passion. you can tell you sincere i really do think that there's a really good chance that this is not a flashing pan but this is the high watermark of this uncommitted thing that's a lot of talk on twitter. we saw someone on the other panel talking about how they want to take this model to other states the problem with that is that the michigan ballot has this uncommitted line. we've been talking about that all night long. if you start to change, you're gonna do this on super tuesday. you're going to have to ask people to write in something, right? because it's not something that check off. and none of those states as much as there's a groundswell, but this stuff it's going to match the arab and muslim community turnout we just saw in dearborn. so it's going to turn it into a talking 0.0. that's just that ethnic group, that identity politics group, because the number will trend down right afterwards. but as it relates to what the congressman was saying about the importance of michigan 15 electoral that's fair. and what that matters. that's why we're so focused on tonight. and i think the same question we asked about the haley vote in south carolina. and tonight is the question we ask here. so what's license now? 40,000 votes for uncommitted let's say it's 100,000. what slice of that comes home to the democrats in november and what stays resistant to biden because of this issue, we don't have the answer to that right now, but the answer to that is going to determine mean, how much trouble he's in in michigan in the fall? yeah. and as was the leader of the house progressives just told me tonight said that this issue, the handling of gaza, the world gaza is breaking apart the coalition that's what she said. >> all right, thanks to everyone here. our primary coverage in michigan continues next >> to be a hair go. >> i want us vegas
