shows israeli forces pushing into southern gaza now. the united nations saying that situation is quote, quote, apocalyptic for civilians and that there is nowhere safe for them to seek shelter. the gop debate stage is set for tomorrow night. nikki haley, chris christie, ron desantis and vivek ramaswamy will face off in alabama. noticeably absent once again the guy up by 30 points, donald trump, who is opting to fundraise instead. in two hours, three university presidents will testify before a congressional committee about the alarming rise in antisemitism on college campuses since the october 7th terror attack. this morning, this hour of "cnn this morning" starts now. ♪ we begin this morning on the mounting concern for civilians. as israeli forces push into southern gaza, which has been a refuge for palestinians trying to escape the fighting, these are new satellite images and what you see there are dozens of armored israeli vehicles in the south of gaza. >> there is still intense and ongoing fighting in northern gaza as well. the united nations officials are warning there is nowhere safe in the gaza strip for civilians to go. the idf says this video shows the troops have been face to face combat with hamas militants and this morning the israel military says it completely surrounded jabalia, the largest refugee camp in gaza. alex marquardt is live in tel aviv. the military operations in southern gaza now intensifying. what do we know so far, alex? >> reporter: well, phil, israel said they will be wrapping up their operations in the north and heading south. we are seeing evidence of those operations moving south. we have new satellite imagery. also new video showing armored vehicles in the southern part of the gaza strip . notably, the road that runs north to south from northern gaza to southern gaza. that road heads down into han yunus, which is the name of a city we will hear a lot about in the coming days. in the first stage in the north israel told northern gazans, more than one million, to flee south, many going to han yunus. it is going to be a target for the israeli military because they believe that some of the hamas leadership is there. at the same time, we are hearing now a rather remarkable comment from the israeli military. when pressed by our colleague erin burnett about the -- about a recent report that for every hamas militant killed, two civilians have been killed at the same time. that is something that is a ratio two to one this idf spokesman culled tremendous. here is a little bit more of what he had to say. >> if you compare that ratio to any other conflict in urban terrain between a military and a terrorist organization using civilians as their human shields and embedded in the civilian population, you will find that that ratio is tremendous. tremendously positive and perhaps unique. >> reporter: so, tremendously positive. in terms of the numbers we understand, israel hasn't put a specific number on the hamas militants killed. they have just said several thousand. at the same time, according to the gaza controlled ministry of health, the hamas controlled ministry of health, the death toll in gaza is believed to be around 16,000. so that ratio of two to one could be a fair bit higher. phil, poppy. >> the fact that the u.n. chief put out this statement in the last 24 hours saying, look, what is happening on the ground in gaza is an apocalyptic situation, right, because they were told to flee the north, go to the south, now israel is targeting the south, they scant go north because so much has been destroyed and now the weather is said to make it much worse. >> reporter: yeah. another senior u.n. official was saying that when you think things can't get any more apocalyptic, they do. you have the vast majority of the gaza population displaced. 1.9 million people according to the u.n., the total population is 2.2 million. they had been told to go south. now they are told to flee even farther south. they have been issued very complicated maps by israel of more than around 2,400 different zones so israel can tell them now move to a different zone, and that's making the assumption they can get online to find this comp you indicated map. so it is an extraordinary -- it is an extreme situation where you have so many people on the move, so many people unable to find shelter, to get aid, medicine, and now, guys, you can see this weather behind me. it's gloomy right now in tel aviv and across the region and it is poised to get worse. the israeli meteorological group said that there is a flash flood warning. we are expecting heavy rains later tonight across the region, including in gaza. they estimate that around 0.6 inches of rain could fall on gaza. so that could make a bad situation even worse. these are people who are coping with injury, without any shelter. they desperately need all kinds of aid. so now soon they are going to have this weather to contend with as well. >> alex marquardt from tel aviv, thank you. now to domestic politics. the republican debate stage is shrinking, four candidates vying for the gop presidential nomination face off tomorrow in tuesday calusa, alabama. nelson mandela, ron desantis, chris christie and vivek ramaswamy all qualified for this debate according to the republican national committee last nate. the gop frontrunner donald trump will not attend opting to attend a fundraiser for a super pac supporting him. warnings are mounting about the threat a second trump presidential term will pose to american democracy. harry enten, you are joining us. that's always a good thing. it makes me happy on so many different levels because you explain things. this idea of trump trying to change the narrative, right, he wants on saturday talking about he is the one who is going to save democracy, not joe biden, that had been a big pitch of biden's. trump, obviously, attempted a coup in the united states of america. however, how do voters feel? >> they actually believe that donald trump committed a serious crime or believe there is credible evidence that he did. look at this. this is a poll a few months ago by prri. 58% of americans believe there is credible evidence that donald trump committed serious federal crimes. 37% disagree. that message is breaking through that donald trump did something very, very unusual. more than that, a trump re-election poses a threat to our democracy and way of life, again the majority of americans believe that this is true. they agree with the idea that trump is a threat. this is a message we have heard from democrats and joe biden over and over again. it does seem to be breaking through. just 41% of americans disagree. all the reporting, all of the talks from democrats seems to be having an impact. here is the question, phil. donald trump is trying to pull this reverse uno card. here we go. a biden re-election poses a threat to our democracy or way of life. look at this. a majority of americans agree on this. what donald trump seems to be arguing does in fact seem to be working to some degree because 53% of americans believe a biden re-election pose as threat to our democracy. that's similar to the 57% who believe a trump re-election poses a threat to our democracy and way of life. >> reverse uno card, projection, gaslighting, the same on some level. how does that translate to favorability ratings for both? >> a favorable view of jump 39%. that's actually slightly ahead of joe biden. remember elections are choices. and there is a bunch of voters who don't like either candidate. phil, this is going to be the key group going forward because there is a lot of them. how so voters who don't like biden or trump vote in 2024, trump hoelgds a ten point lead. this is a group that -- joe biden's got to make it up. otherwise, he will continue to trail in the polls. thank you very much. for more analysis alyssa griffin, good to have you. staying on the biden beat for a minute. this sort of pretty shocking new poll out of harvard says biden right now is under 50% with young voters. that's 18 to 29. he comes in at 48% of them saying that they would for sure vote for him. trump said 33%. 19% unhere. biden had 66% of those voters in 2020. what's going on with young voters? >> listen, i support joe biden on how he handling the war in israel. the vast majority of young voters don't. that's a major factor that i think probably affects these numbers. there is a general generational concern about the fact that we are going to likely have two candidates squaring off who are near octogenarians. and then the foreign policy distinction that is mobilizing with young voters. >> to that point, the thing -- it's not just young voters. the entire democratic coalition is soft right now. there has long been an assumption that they will come back over the course of the next 11 months when it becomes a binary choice, becomes very clear. do you think there is a risk that won't happen? >> it's a tremendous risk to assume that it will be donald trump and therefore people will turn out for joe biden. he uses the line don't compare me to the almighty but to the alternative. here is the fa kt. where we stand donald trump will likely be the garoppolo nominee. this is historicry unfit person, a former president, the only in his history announced by chiefs of staff, secretary of defense, foreign -- and the list goes on. he is likely to be the nominee. there is three way to stop him. primary season, the courts, which may not convict before a election and general election. for democrats who i think rightly have argued he is a threat to democracy, we are putting one guy as the backstop to stop donald trump. we are not engaging in a primary, considering governors or a younger fighter. i have worry democrats may be running into a sort of ruth bader ginsburg moment where they put all their stock in somebody who they believe in but could end up losing to somebody so dangerous. >> other than dean phillips, democrats aren't putting themselves out there. he is the one who is saying those things and saying more of us should be doing this and given biden a real primary. could we talk about nikki haley? really interesting to see her rise. chris christie, "new york times" reporting that some republican big donors have a message for chris christie which is get out and they are throwing their money behind people like nikki haley and part of what is interesting is she is willing to talk about real entitlement reform on social security and head carol. listen to her. >> the once we change it for are those like my kids in their 20s. coming into the system. we change retirement age to reflect life expectancy for them. we limit benefits on the wealthy. instead of cost of living increases, we do increases based on inflation and we expand medicare advantage plans which seniors love to allow competition and reduce the cost of health care. >> big money donors like ken langone in new york saying why do i need $3,500 a month. this has to change. what is the political calculus? that was a third reel untouchable. >> i think nikki haley has the political nuance to tackle something like entitlement reform and not fall into the trap that democrats often set which is you're taking away sbooimts. she is talking about reforming for the future generation, the some vensy ten years from now which has to be addressed and we will come to head with. listen the reality she now has the support of the cochenette work. this is a major priority. true fiscal conservatives many years. i think that this resonates in places like new hampshire and south carolina where she has to do well. >> the debate. obviously, trump's not going to be on the stage. it's been a central accelerant to nikki haley's rise. undeniable. what do you except on the stage? >> i think the fact that it's a shrinked stage and it's going to give everyone more speaking time, a bit of time to go beyond just talking points and the fighting. based on previous performances i expect she will be the winner of this debate which her campaign hopes she rises to number two in iowa and pull off a miracle in new hampshire and then go to her home state of south carolina. to the point of chris christie, more and more republicans saying the more never thump side of things or who want a trump salttive we like what you did but if this is about stopping donald trump you need to back nikki haley now. >> liz cheney had said she wouldn't run as a third party. she did this interview saying she will do what it takes to prevent trump running for office and saying several years ago i would not have contemplate add third party run. now she may do that. oochs can she be sure that her third party run would help prevent a trump presidency? isn't that a gamble? >> she wouldn't be -- i think that her calculation she would be taking votes from donald trump. i think there is always a concern that you may be taking soft joe biden voters. nikki haley -- sorry, liz cheney is not somebody who would do this lightly without data to show she would only be able to help joe biden win the election if she were to do that. i wouldn't get ahead of that decision yet. >> alyssa farah griffin. thank you. tonight anderson cooper sits down with former republican representative liz cheney. two democrats drafting a resolution to condemn hamas' use of rape and sexual assault in response to comments of a member of their own party. a session held at the united nations highlighting that issue. >> do we believe that -- rape is forbidden, therefore, it couldn't have happened on october 7th? or do we believe the women? whose bodies tell us how they spent the last minutes of their lives. welcome back to this morning. two house democrats say they are working to introduce a resolution to officially condemn hamas' use of sexual violence. it comes after congresswoman faced criticism for not speaking out more strongly against that violence. the united nations yesterday held a special session focusing on the horrific acts by hamas terrorists against israeli women during the jeffries attacks. are allegations hamas denies. >> matthew miller says he sees, no reason to doubt the reports. he says that hamas is likely holding back from releasing further civilian woman because t they don't want them to talk about what they went through in captivity. he was asked to elaborate. >> do you have any evidence to suggest that is what it is? >> i want to be sensitive in my language when talking about people that continue to be held hostage that have families on the outside. so what i will say is we know hamas has committed atrocities. hold on. they continue to hold women. they were going over -- and suddenly the last point reneged on the deal and were never able to provide a credible reason why. >> joining us now chief washes correspondent jake tapper. he has been out front on the story for weeks. seems like people are starting to recognize how slow many organizations have been to pay attention to this. why? >> well, i don't know why they have not been more active and aggressive when it comes to recognizing the evidence and the eyewitness testimony that israeli -- that atrocities against israeli women and girls and men took place on october 7th by hamas. but because the united nations and other international organizations and feminist organizations had been so silent, the israeli mission to the united nations held this special event yesterday at the u.n. in which they invited various feminist leaders, including sheryl sandberg and hilbert margol and senator gillibrand and others to talk about this issue and to invite others to bear witness as to what happened on october 7th. >> on october 7th, hamas perpetrated rape and sexual violence, exploiting these unforgiveable crimes as weapons of war. >> nearly two months after the october 7th attacks, the international community is finally beginning to investigate and recognize reports of brutal and inhumane rapes and sexual assaults by hamas terrorists, torturing and terrorizing the people of israel. for weeks, israeli police have been collecting eyewitness testimony, video and forensic evidence detailing countless accounts of rape and sexual assault perpetrated by terrorists on israeli women and children, and for weeks there has been very little outcry or condemnation from the international community, including from the united nations. >> sadly, the very international bodies that are supposedly the defenders of all women showed that when it comes to israelis, indifference is acceptable. to these organizations, israeli women are not women. the rape of israelis is not an act of rape. their silence has been deafening. >> reporter: but monday the united nations held a gathering hosted by israel examining sexual and gender-based violence committed during hamas' attack on israel. hamas has denied committing any rapes or sexual assaults. >> there are exactly no circumstances that justify rape. none. rape is targeted. rape is terror. rape is torture. >> doesn't just strike fear in the hearts of israeli women. it strikes fear in the hearts of every woman and girl around the globe. their bodies are not worth defending. >> reporter: the chief superintendent of the israeli police read numerous accounts of atrocities witnessed by survivors and firms. >> everything was an apocalypse of corpses. girls without any clothes on. without tops. without underwear. people cut in half. butchered. some were beheaded. there were girls with a broken pelvis. due to repetitive rapes. their legs were spread wide apart in a split. a witness testified we heard girls pulled out from the shelters. girls that shouted, they raped girls, burned them just after that. all the bodies outside were burned. a rescuer that arrived to a house on a kibbutz testified, inside the shower there was a body of a cuffed woman. she was without her underwear. the body was in the corner and her hands were tied. another testimony from the rave party survivor, women without clothes. some without the upper body clothes. some without the lower body clothes. blood over the lower body. everyone was full of blood. butchered people. we found a woman's body dumped outside without pants, without underpants, burned, barely any hair left on her. >> reporter: and videos were played from a first responders, a paramedic and survivor of the music festival detailing firsthand what they experienced. >> translator: the two were bound by their hands. their hands were behind their back. there was a body of a woman that had a blood stain on her genitalia. there was a lot of gun wounds there. shooting was targeted at sexual organs. we saw that a lot. they had a thing with sexual organs, both in women and in men. the women we received, they were civilian. we mainly saw either breast amputations or gunshots just to the breast. simply see shooting from one side of the breast to the other. they were conscious when they got to us. they laid a woman down and i understand that she is ranking her. he is shifting her position and then pass her on to another person. was she alive, the girl they raped? yes, she was alive. she had long hair. he was pulling her hair. she is not dressed and he cuts her breast. he throws it on the road and they are playing with it. >> reporter: another survivor of the attack described seeing a horrific rape at the november a music festival. i saw a beautiful woman with the face of an angel and eight or ten of the fighters beating and raping her. she was screaming it, stop it already. i am going to die anyway from what you are doing. just kill me. when they finished they were laughing and the los one shot her in the head. >> do we believe the hamas spokesperson who said that rape is forbidden, therefore, it couldn't have possibly happened on october 7th? or do we believe the women whose bodies tell us how they spent the last minutes of their lives? who are we going to believe? >> and in addition to the male hostages and the soldiers who are still being kept hostage who are still kidnapped by hamas, there are 17 women and children that hamas either is still holding hostage or say they do not -- they cannot account for, and those 17 are three children, a 4-year-old arielle bibas, 10-year-old, 18-year-old and the women 26-year-old noah, 19-year-old karina, 19-year-old aegan, 32-year-old, sheer bibas, and we should note that hamas claims that the bibass were killed. 28-year-old amit, carmel, 23-year-old romy, 27-year-old haman, 19-year-old, 7-year-old judy weinstein, who is a dual u.s./israeli citizen, 28-year-old ar bell, 24 recalled eden, 28-year-old eden zachariah. now, if you notice, that those women are almost all teenagers in their t20s and 30s. and if the thought occurs to you, the horrific thought occurs to you as to why mthat might be these are the last ones, those are fears that are shared by israeli officials and you heard the state department spokesman matt miller alluding to those fears. there is not evidence of those fears but it is a reasonable supposition. when i was interviewing a survivor of the november a music festival she hid in a camper and she was -- she told me that it was a fear at one point that hamas -- the terrorists were going to start taking the camper into gaza and she thought she was going to run out of the camper and get killed because people in israel know what happens to women and girls if you get kidnapped and go into gaza. it's just known that hamas terrorists -- you have a -- there is a chance that you will be raped by hamas terrorists because they are terrorists and that's what they do. so we do not know that that is what's happening with these teenagers and women in their 20s and 30s, but that is, obviously, the fear. >> so glad you read all their names, jake. and showed all their pictures. let's bring into the conversation our senior global affairs analyst bianna golodryga. you have been covering this, being a voice when many of us, a lot of us should have done a better job, the media at large, people in power and congress talking about it. now what happens after that session at the u.n.? what's the impact? what changes? >> well, the fact that it took eight weeks for an event to be held, the fact it took seven weeks for u.n. women to put out the bare minimum statement and acknowledging, acknowledging that there are these allegations and condemning hamas speaks volumes to the silence that israeli women, that israeli investigators, that experts in women's rights that have been affiliated with women's groups at the u.n. feel they have been silenced and that they have been ignored. and this speaks to the larger issue of why. and the use of rape as a weapon of war and all of the evidence leading up to this suggesting that it wasn't a one-off by a terrorist here or there. the evidence that they have gathered, this expert told me, suggests was premeditated and that is a crime against humanity. so that's what they are trying to pursue. it is difficult to listen to these-times. testimonies. it is heartbreaking. as we have seen in jake's piece, other reporting, thanks to the launch of jake's piece here at cnn, how much more do we need to listen to? i am sorry that the victims are no longer, many, alive because they were murdered by terrorists. but there is a lengthy list of evidence now that has been accumulated, that has been documented around the world, and the question is, will these communities who say that our purpose is to defend women's rights no matter where they are, no matter who they are, no matter what religion they are, will they step up now? because this is not only a shame for israeli women. it really represents women around the world. and it could set a dangerous precedent. >> women around the world who face this in other places than just in conflict and it has always been something people at the u.n. wanted to talk about and focus on. to track back, and you correct me if i'm wrong on this, my sense of things was it was your interview and the lack of answer in of an u.n. official led to a belated statement. so that father? do you know what happened behind the scenes there? >> well, jake had his incredible piece. a week later -- a few days later i began covering it as well. we booked the head of one of the officials that u.n. women to talk about it. it was a nine-minute piece. there was a 30-second portion that got a lot of attention where i specifically asked her why have you not yet condemned hamas given the length e lengthy list of evidence that has been accumulated and they are answer was really a non-answer. it was a word salad. i gave her plenty of opportunities to address that issue directly and speak out against hamas and then it was two or three days later that u.n. women finally issued the bare minimum statement which was just acknowledging and i think, i don't know that's the video there, just acknowledging what had been reported. the most heartbreaking part of this is the expert that i had been speaking with -- >> we have that. should we listen to it? >> yes. >> listen to what she told bianna. >> is there a reason, sara, you can't specifically call out hamas and the mounting evidence now over seven weeks that israeli investigators have collected that we've shown our viewers about the atrocities they committed, specifically on october 7th? i think that's the crux of the issue here. it's not just condemning sexual violence against women and a war in general. specifically what occurred on october 7th perpetrated by hamas. >> indeed. u.n. women always supports impartial, independent investigations into any serious allegations of gender-based or sexual violence. within the u.n. family these investigators are led by the high commissioner of human rights. >> you heard words but none of them addressing the question that i asked her directly. speaking about ruth kadari, the she said she was heartbroken because on october 9th, remember, this is one of the most well documented crimes. these terrorists came in with go pros, signed videos they were showing family members in real time. even two days later there had been enough alarming evidence to suggest and sound the alarm to women's groups like the u.n. women and other affiliates there to say an investigation is warranted. it looks like we have something that amounts to a war crime here and that is the rape of women and use of rape as a war crime. she heard nothing. no responses. she said that was heartbreaking for her. and one of the reasons why she said it's so important to sound the alarm is because -- and we'll play the clip -- in her view it almost legitimatizes what took place. i believe we have that video, too. >> by not acknowledging this, by dismissing, by ignoring, they are, in fact, almost i would say legitimatizing the existence of these atrocities. >> so what happens next? we'll see. i mean, it took eight weeks to just get people to pay attention to this ander together at the u.n. we'll see if things can be expedited going forward. there are a lot of woman who deserve justice and a lot of attention and shame should be cast on those who were quiet through this period or equivocating. >> if i could? >> please. >> go ahead. >> no, no, please. >> first, the u.n. event we should note, this is not the united nations doing this event. this is is the israel embassy, mission to the united nations hosting this event. this is not the secretary general guterres finally having a change of heart and recognizing what's happening. not the u.n. commission on women finally recognizing what is happening. this is the israeli ambassador to the united nations, him hosting this event with hillary clinton and others. so we shouldn't give the u.n. credit here. they were the site of this event but didn't host the event. second of all, it was secretary of state madeleine albright that first got rape as a weapon of war recognized and this is -- had to do with the conflict in yugoslavia, in congo, in rwanda, and nobody had to take a position on the politics of those conflicts. nobody had to side with the serbs or the houthis. you didn't have to take a position and to the conflict to condemn rape as a weapon of war. and i think one of the things going on here, and there are certainly other things going on here, but one of the things going on here is i think that there are people who feel that to condemn what hamas did is to side with benjamin netanyahu, and it's not. it is to side with humanity. you don't have to agree with what the idf is doing in gaza to condemn hamas raping women and girls on october 7th. and third of all, israelis are like any other human being, and raping them is just as vial as raping any other human being on this planet. >> jake tapper, bianna golodryga, you guys have helped drive this over the course of the last several weeks. thank you for the great reporting. please keep us posted on more reporting. >> thank you both very much. the united states also this passed a very grim milestone. the record number of mass killings by guns, that's ahead. and apocalyptic is how the united nations is describing life in gaza. we will speak to someone with firsthand knowledge of the situation on the ground. stay with us. there is sadly a grim new milestone reached in america. the united states has now hit a record number of mass killings with guns already this year according to analysis by "the washington post." on sunday in dallas, police say a 21-year-old man shot five people inside a home killing a toddler and three adults before fleeing the scene and fatally shooting himself. in washington state this weekend authorities say five family members were wilden an apparent murder-suicide. those were the 37th and 38th shootings this year where four or more victims were killed. the highest number of mass killings with guns since "the post" started tracking in 2006. >> according to the data, 26 of the mass killings occurred in private homes. ten happened in public places, including this year's deadliest shooting when 18 were killed at a bowling alley in maine. an out let mall, alabama, a bank in louisville, kentucky, and a christian school in nash ril where six people were included, including three 9-year-olds. >> according to the wash post, only three of those 38 shootings were known or thought to be related to robberies, gang conflicts or drug-related crimes. and these mass shootings represent a small portion of everyday gun violence. last year 49,000 people died from gunshot wounds according to the cdc. that averages to 132 deaths a day more than half were suicides and consider these statistics. in april a survey showed adults killed by a gun. went 1% have personally been threatened by a gun and 17% have witnessed someone being shot. that is gun violence in america today. >> reality. meanwhile, the conditions it gaza growing more dire with no place save for civilians to seek shelter. and confronting growing antisemitism on n college e campmpuses. mumultiple uniniversity prpresi will tesestify. ththose detailils ahead. happening right now, sirens sounding over tel aviv. cnn's team on the ground, heard at least eight rocket interceptions. this morning the united nations is warning that the situation in gaza is, quote, apocalyptic. the u.n. warning more than 80% of gaza's population has been displaced. tens of thousands of displaced palestinians are arriving in rafa, traveling as far south as. the u.n.'s aid director thomas white said, quote, even in rafah the und of airstrikes punctuates the day. people are pleading for advice where to find safety. we have nothing to tell them. joining us is palestinian legislator and leader of the palestinian national initiative, we appreciate your time, sir. i want to start with you speak regularly with organizations, medical organizations on the ground, you're in contact with them. what are they telling you about the situation as the israeli offensive has ramped up once again? >> yes, we communicate, we have 25 medical teams working there and we communicate with them, but frequently there are no communications. they are disrupted by israeli airstrikes. they tell us that the situation is horrible. it's untolerable. and what you see here is a combination of israeli bombardment of airstrikes as well as artillery strikes and tank bombardment. it's not safe there. up to now, we have lost no less than 15,000 palestinians killed and 7,000 children. if the people from the under the the total number of people killed or injured is around 64,000. that is about 3% of the total population of gaza. this happened in the united states, you would be talking about 10 million people killed or injured in less than seven weeks. that is not acceptable by any means. >> to that point, in terms of the casualties, the number of killed striking last night, a spokesman for the idf said that the ratio of militants killed versus civilians killed is basically 2-1. he called that tremendously positive. >> you can't be serious and accept that. >> that's whooo v why i'm asking you. >> the 9,000 children are militants. or most -- all of the people who are -- most of the people who are killed or injured are civilians. we see them. i mean, we know them. we have their names. we have their i.d.s. it's not true. the israelis are telling you pure propaganda. i tell you, there is a lot of black propaganda coming from the israeli side to justify war crimes that are committed now in gaza. the war crime of genocide, the war crime of ethnic cleansing, and the war crime of collective punishment. people are left with no place to be in. they are in the streets. they have no place to hide in. they have nothing. they don't have food. they don't have fuel. they don't have electricity. they don't have medications. hospitals are incapable of coping with automatic these in -- all these injured people. people are on the ground. and the doctors cannot provide support to them because there isn't enough medications and there is no beds for them. the most they can do is only first aid, and our doctors told me they had to operate on people without anesthesia. they had even to amputate the leg of a man without anesthesia. as a medical doctor, i never thought in the 21st century this could happen. and israel must stop this terrible bombardment. they must stop these war crimes and allow palestinians to have an immediate and complete and permanent cease-fire. this is what we need immediately. >> doctor, it's difficult to think about the long term in a moment like this. i think that's the case for everybody, all the parties involved here. u.s. officials have been trying to figure out kind of what the day after the israeli operation would look like. you've long been an advocate of nonviolence, a leader inside palestinian politics. do you see any possibility of a two-state solution like president biden advocates for any type of peace process after this? >> unfortunately, because of the lack of efforts from the side in particular of the united states, we have lost 30 years when we could have had peace a long time ago if the agreement was signed. but nobody stopped the israelis from building illegal settlements in the occupied israeli territories. we can have a two-state solution with one thing -- israel allows those from the west bank and if they allow us to elect our own leadership in a democratic matter. had we had democratic elections in 2021, we would not have this war. >> just given the fact that the united states -- secretary of state antony blinken has pointed to the palestinian authority as the entity that would be the one that could lead on this. do you think that's plausible given the views on the p.a. inside the west bank? >> the problem is that netanyahu -- i think the palestinian authority should be subjected to democratic free elections, and we should have the right to elect our leaders democratically like all countries do in the world. but the reality is that netanyahu is saying he's not going to allow any palestinian authority in gaza. his plan is to occupy gaza completely and ethnically cleanse palestinians to egypt. that's what he's saying. some of the members of his party are even calling for ethnic cleansing of palestinians from the west bank to jordan. this is a government that has fast fascists in it. one calls himself a fascist homophobe. then palestinians would have one of three operations, to emigrate, which is cleansing, or accept the lives of subjugation or die. >> it is the very complicating factor of the current government. that's why the u.s. has repeatedly said there cannot be displacement into other nations. and u.s. allies in the region have made that clear as well. we appreciate your time, as always, sir. thank you. >> thank you. really important conversation. also, this happening today, in just a couple hours, house lawmakers will begin a hearing on combatting anti-semitism on college campuses. they will hear testimony from the presidents of harvard, m.i.t., and the university of pennsylvania. harvard in particular has been a focus in terms of struggling to contain hate speech, protests, and unrest on their campus. at cornell, anti-semitic messages were painted on the sidewalks on campus, and a student was arrested for making online threats to that school's jewish community. at george washington university, these anti-israel messages were beamed on a library building on campus. and at tulane, a fight broke out where protesters assaulted a jewish student, breaking his news. the department of education has launched an investigation into both incidents and into anti-semitism and islamophobia at several schools including harvard, upenn, harvard and cornell. we're back after the break. i don't know if our party can be saved. those words from liz cheney this morning, who als
