two drones in the sea. >> as israel defends itself it matters how. >> brutality and callousness across the gaza strip, nowhere is safe. donald trump tries to flip the script. >> joe biden is the destroyer of democracy. >> dictatorship in the united states. >> it's about who protecting your freedoms. >> six weeks from the iowa caucuses. >> nikki haley is the most underestimated politician. good morning, everyone. brand-few overnight the israeli military ramping up air strikes after announcing it would expand its ground operations to the entire gaza strip, that of course includes the south where many civilians have fled. we're tracking a growing threat of this war spreading into a wider regional conflict. >> in the red sea, the pentagon said an american destroyer came to the rescue of three commercial ships that were attacked by ballistic missiles. the destroyer shot down many drones. we're keeping a close eye on israel's northern border, with lebanon, where israeli forces have been exchanging fire with hezbollah. three israeli soldiers were hurt by mortar shells fired. >> it's expanding its operations to the gaza strip, tension between israel and u.s. about civilians where are civilians to go now. >> reporter: we know about 80% of the population of gaza has already been displaced, many of them to the south, now over the weekend, the israeli military put out on social media a map breaking gaza up into hundreds of numbered blocks and on that map is a qr code which people can get on to and see perhaps where they can go that might be safe, where they should leave if it's not going to be safe, the problem is, many people in gaza don't have electricity to power their phones and secondly, often times the internet connection is very spotty and certainly what we've seen is a mounting death toll in gaza, according the palestinian ministry of health n a 24-hour period between saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon, 316 people were killed, 664 injured. now of course we always say it's the hamas-run gaza ministry of health, these numbers are widely recognized as fairly accurate, and what we know is that over the weekend, the death toll from the 7th of october in gaza has now exceeded 15,000, in fact this morning i was speaking with a gaza resident who told me at the beginning of the war israelis were warning people to leave a building, then that building without be struck, he said that's no longer the case, more or less, and that when the israelis strike, they don't strike one building they take out an entire block and that's what we've seen in places like the refugee camp knot of gaza city and just to the east of gaza city. >> ben, to the north, how significant is the shelling that has been going all weekend and continues today between israel and hezbollah in lebanon, what does it mean? >> reporter: well, certainly what it means, and hezbollah actually observed the seven-day truce between hamas and israel, but once the truce ended on friday morning they started to open fire again and what we're seeing it's been fairly intense back and forthhezbollah, now un following the rules of engagement, whereby hezbollah only hits targets close to the border on the israeli side and vice versa, so this sort of perhaps hezbollah's way of saying, yes, we're part of the fight, we're helping gaza, but they don't seem to want to go so far that it might ignite a full-scale war between hezbollah and israel give than many people in lebanon still recall the level of destruction wreaked upon lebanon during the 2006 war between hezbollah and israel. >> ben, thank you so much for your reporting especially given all of your experience in lebanon as well. ben was just talking about fierce of escalation and they're growing. we're told it was part of sustained attack that saw three commercial vessels come under in international waters. joining us now is to discuss retired general mark herzling. one of the parts of the pause that didn't get the appreciation was that the hostilities and the possibility of expansion also simmered for a moment. that's changing now. what's the risk here. >> you're spot-on, phil. what's interesting about it seems that someone, perhaps iran told the various rebel groups lay low for a while, let's see what happens and see how long we can keep this pause in place, what we're seeing now is an increase of firing of rockets and missiles from both hezbollah and the houthis in yemen. multiple ships, one of two carrier strikes groups and they happen to be positioned and maneuvered in one of the hottest spots around, in the middle of the gulf of aden. they are doing a great job, they've seen a significant fight in that area intercepting missiles coming out of yemen. >> lloyd austin, the defense secretary with quite a stark warning over the weekend about, again, back to what blinken has said and kamala harris the vice president has said, how israel does this matters. let's listen to the defense secretary. >> in this kind of fight the center of gravity is the civilian population. if you drive them into the arms of the enemy you replace a tactical victory with a strategic defeat. so, i have repeatedly made clear to israel's leaders that protecting palestinian civilians in gaza is both a moral responsibility and a strategic imperative. >> republican senator lindsey graham has been pretty supportive of lloyd austin really went after him in his interview with dana bash yesterday. listen to what he said about that. >> i just lost all confidence in this guy, how about focusing on protecting our soldiers, men and women in syria and iraq, strategic defeat would be inflaming the palestinians. they're already inflamed. they're taught to hate the jews and to kill them. >> dana pushed back, what about this issue that you talk about of insurgent math, and she was so spot-on to do that, can you explain what that means and what lloyd austin is saying here. >> i can, first i want to give a disclaimer, secretary austin is both a friend, he was my commander in iraq and he was my classmate at west point. but he's right. tactical victories in operations can turn into strategic defeat if the force, the fighting force ignores the treatment of civilians. we learned that multiple times in both afghanistan and iraq. insurgency math as you point out and dana bash did a great job of doing that yesterday, insurgency you can't kill your way to victory, you have to consider the effects of your actions on future generations, how many more insurgents you're generating by your actions, what kind of hatred does a population have, now senator graham was right, the issues in the gaza strip and the west bank and in other places had been inflamed over the years and there's a lot of political background, but that's because the palestinian people have not been treated correctly by politicians, both on their side and on opposite sides. austin spent ten years in combat learning the implications of insurgency math, how if you kill so many, many more will come to the aid of the insurgents and unfortunately that's what the united states and president biden has been trying to discuss with prime minister netanyahu, unfortunately, you know, the israeli government wants to kill this threat on their border within their own country, and they're on a razor's edge on how do you kill a terrorist organization that's using the people as human shields wherever they move, and this is why that operation will likely expand in the southern part of gaza, as the civilian population moved so has the hamas terrorists. as you watch the films, there are a lot of many call military-age males walking around those streets, you toebt see a lot of women and children in some of those photographs coming out of gaza, how do you differentiate between the hamas terrorists and the innocent palestinian civilians in those areas, it's very difficult in an insurgency operation. donald trump is calling president biden the, quote, the destroyer of democracy, we'll tell you what else is he's saying and who else he's targeting. house gop has one fewer member, but speaker johnson said they still have the votes to open an impeachment inquiry into president biden. we'll explain next. so if you believe it, that's a clock to show you we're six weeks away from the iowa caucuses and president biden sharpens his attacks against his likely repeat opponent donald trump. is now flipping the script, accusing biden of being a huge threat to democracy. it was really interesting to see him do this over the weekend. >> reporter: yeah, those signs were handed out at that trump event before he took the stage, clearly they're pushing this messaging and a lot of this is coming from the fact that a trump and advisers that donald trump will not only win iowa but also be the republican nominee and they want to set the stage for the general election. there are six weeks into the iowa republican presidential caucus donald trump is already signal a pivot to a potential general election matchup. >> joe biden isn't the defender of american democracy. >> reporter: offering his most forceful rebuttal yet that a second trump term would threaten american democracy. >> president biden is the destroyer of american democracy. >> reporter: trump facing felony charges over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election claiming it was biden who posed the threat to the country. >> the wreckers of the american dream, the american dream is dead with them in office. it's sad zbrr trump also continuing his renewed attacks on on the affordable care act, known as obamacare. >> we're going to fix it because it's a cat strophe for family budgets. >> reporter: his rival ron desantis said he would seek to replace the healthcare. >> obamacare hasn't worked. we'll supersede with a better plan. >> reporter: democrats seizing on the threat made by republican candidates. . the biden campaign airing this ad in battleground states. >> go back to the policies that helped the rich get richer and left so many people behind, i don't want to go back. >> reporter: while trump and biden are both looking toward the general election, trump still needs to beat out his gop rivals for his party's nomination. desantis still trailing trump in the polls also in iowa this weekend completing his tour of the state's 99 counties. >> by the fact that i'm willing to do this, that should show you that i consider myself a servant and not a ruler. >> reporter: the florida governor projecting confidence that he'll win iowa and with it the nomination. >> we'll win iowa, i think it's going to help propel us to the nomination. >> reporter: despite a weekend of internal drama three top staffers exiting the main superpac supporting his campaign efforts. and poppy, as desantis is facing all of this inner turmoil, nikki haley has seen a surge in her campaign. still be hard for her to beat donald trump. of course anything can be happen. and iowa can be a wild card. house republicans are starting off this week one member short after george santos was ousted on friday. speaker johnson pushing guard with an impeachment inquiry into president biden. lauren fox is on capitol hill. i think, again, george santos, we miss you, we don't. the big question is, on the impeachment inquiry itself, does speaker johnson have the support from moderates in. >> reporter: that's the key question, phil, and this is obviously just another piece of evidence that we have seen that johnson is really trying to manage this very delicate balance between giving his right flank something that they're excited about and ensuring that his moderate members have what they need in their re-elections, right now the question, does he have the votes to move forward with the impeachment inquiry? former house speaker mccarthy made the decision that he didn't need to move forward with that vote on the house floor. what you're hearing now from some moderate members, at least some members who are running in swing districts is the question is whether or not there's enough evidence, that might not be the case yet in their minds but they do believe this is an important step in case the house has to go to court in order to get documents and interviews they want for their impeachment inquiry and their argument, this is an important step forward if we have to go to court we have to show some precedent that we took every step necessary to try and get this information, so they believe this really strengthens their case in court, which is why some moderates are starting to show an openness, we'll keep a close track of where things stand, representative ken buck still say they're opposed with moving forward with this. >> it's only been a matter of weeks for the new speaker, how behind the scenes is he dealing with this very divided conference? >> reporter: obviously, this is part of the very difficult task for the house speaker and it was going to be true of any speaker, our colleagues manu raju and have this great piece out this morning, lays out behind the scenes how johnson is trying to make inroads with his right flank, knowing there will be moments he'll disappoint them. chip roy has made his dissatisfaction clear on the floor. saying they haven't accomplished anything all year. that's a really hard sell on when you're out on the campaign trail. there's not a accomplishment for house republicans to point to. as he moves forward with what he's going to do when it comes to ukraine funding, israel funding and the like. phil. >> lauren fox on capitol hill, thank you. a father on his death bed reveals something so shocking about a course the 1968 bank heist classic the thomas crown affair, authorities say that movie inspired bank teller to. he walked out of the bank with $215,000 in paper bag and he vanished. just for context, $1.7 million today. but for more than 50 years, no one knew he had done it. not until his daughter said he confessed to her on his death bed before passing away from lung cancer in 2021. thomas randele's daughter is sharing her story in a new pod cast. she joins us now. ashley, we appreciate you joining us this morning, i think this story is one, it's wild, two, people are completely fascinated by it. the question is, the idea of doing the podcast, why did you decide this is how you wanted to do this. >> thank you so much for having me. i knew it was really important to tell my dad's full story. so much to a life one moment when you're 20 years old. it gave me the opportunity to tell this compelling story in an exciting medium. podcasting allows incredible storytelling, it really feels like you're listening to movie when you listen to this podcast. >> i also think that the story itself feels like it's a movie on several different points throughout including -- i want to start how you found this out, you watch ncis and crime shows regularly, watching an episode in 2021 was first how this came to your attention, explain. >> it was. my mom, dad and i were sitting in the living room watching ncis and he looked over at us and calmly said, ladies, just in case anything ever comes up, i had to change my name when i moved here. the authorities are probably still looking for me, i don't want to talk about it, but just so you know in case it ever comes up you're not blindsided. then we went back to ncis. >> then what? >> i realized that wasn't enough information and the next day i sat down with him alone and really pushed him on finding out his name, if his name wasn't tom randele, i deserved to know my father's name and my name. he finally said that he would tell me as long as i promised not to look into it and that's when he told me his name was ted conrad. i didn't listen to him and i looked into it. that night at 2:30 alone in my childhood bedroom, i put in the name ted conrad, missing, that's when i saw the headline, like vault teller heist and i was absolutely floored. i couldn't have been more shocked. i said out loud to the room, oh, my gosh, my life is a lifetime movie. >> the process of processing to some degree, where are you now versus when you had that moment of realization? >> i'm definitely i think in a more solid place now. honestly working on this podcast, to investigate my dad, has helped me transition through a lot of the uncertainty and a lot of the grief of losing him, what's so fascinating about this project specifically is the psychology of a criminal is fascinating to me. but we hear a lot about it from criminals who were caught. and my dad was never caught. so being able to have those conversations with him and really delve into that psychology of what does it mean to be a fugitive on the run for 50 years, to have to keep that huge secret, but then also, what other secrets do you then have to keep from your friends, from your family, i mean from your wife and child, to keep that original secret and protect yourself? it's been a healing journey but fascinating. >> real quick, everyone should listen it's fascinating story, any idea where the money went? >> i don't have a big bag of money. i mean, it sounds like when he first moved here he lived in a gorgeous apartment and didn't work all that much and it was gone within a few years of just living a really nice life in boston. >> right. ashley the story is fascinating, the podcast is out today. thank you so much for joining us. >> yes, thank you so much. more details coming to light about hamas' horrific crimes on october 7th including reports of rape and sexual assault. our jake tapper joins us to discuss a string of raids in moscow against lgbtq bars. we'll tell you why it's happening, next. new this morning, police in russia raided several gay bars in moscow over the weekend, after a top court in russia banned the lgbtq movement calling it quote extremist. according to two independent online news outlets. shocking news, why were the raids carried out and what are the long-term impacts? >> the long-term impacts could be huge for the gay and lesbian and traens gender and queer community in russia. there were three venues that were raided this weekend and they're not necessarily gay bars or clubs per se, but gay entertainment venues where apparently events wither taking place and that's very significant even though the authorities there are saying that no one was detained in those raids, some documents photographed from those people there that in and of itself could have a chilling effect. they're saying they were normal drug raids but folks from the gay and lesbian community on the ground don't buy that. they're definitely terrified at what happened. the reason this significance is another sign of massive crackdown that's happening in russia on the gay and lesbian, transgender and queer community there. what happened on thursday the country's supreme court didn't not only ban the lgbtq movement but they declared who's member of that community, in other words, all the folks in russia are gays, lesbians, transgenders, are all extremists, that could have huge legal repercussions for those folks, again this something that we've seen over the past couple of years a big crackdown happening on that community, life has become a lot more difficult for them over the past couple of years and the other thing we have to say one of the reasons why vladimir putin he's doing this is to counter western influence and why he 's conducting his invasion of ukraine. this morning the supreme court is set to hear a high-stakes case to determine if the make of oxycontin can proceed with its bankruptcy. what this coululd mean, , next. dear moms and dads, what you have achieved here today is going to help us and our futures. it is why we're coming up on stage to collect your diplomas. mom, love you always. vo: when you graduate, they graduate. visit finishyourdiploma.org to find free and supportive adult education centers near you. a warning to our viewers, the testimony you're about to hear are very graphic and very disturbing, a new report revealing horrific stories of rape and sexual violence during hamas' attack on october 7th. sharing details of rape and other atrocities. a 39-year-old witness who attended the nova music festival on october 7th said, quote, i saw this beautiful woman with, she was screaming stop it, already i'm going to die, anyway from what you're doing just killed me. when they were finished they were laughing and the last one shot her in the head. a police commander leading israel's investigation, it's clear that sexual crimes were part of the planning and the purpose was to terrify and humiliate people. >> a commander of rescue unit we collected 1,000 bodies from the kibbutz, it was clear they were trying to spread -- these horrific accounts come as israeli delegation to u.n. will hold a special session on focusing this. former chief operator of meta sheryl sandberg. >> the silence on this from too many is deafening. we have come so far in believing survivors of rape and assaults in so many situations how can we ignore how these women spent the very last moments of their lives. >> quote, we're alarmed by the numerous accounts of gender-based atrocities and t sexual violence during those days. also i want to listen to this exchange between our dana bash and democratic congressman, this was yesterday. silence from many progressive women in congress on these rapes be hamas. listen. >> i've condemned what hamas has done -- >> specifically against women. >> absolutely the rape, of course. but i think we have to remember that israel is a democracy, that's why they're a strong ally of ours and if they don't comply with international humanity law, they're bringing themselves to a place that makes it much more difficult strategically for them to be able to build the kind of allies. >> with respect, i was asked about the women and you turned it back to israel. i'm asking about hamas in fact -- >> i answered your question, dana, i said it's horrific and i think rape is horrific. sexual assault is horrific. i think it happens in war situations. hamas are using these as tools. however, i think we have to be answered about bringing in the outrages against palestinians, 15,000 palestinians have been killed. >> joining us now is jake tapper. sheryl sandberg is a big name, she wrote that cnn op-ed about this a couple of weeks, what is she going to say today at the u.n.? >> reporter: well, to get an early copy of her remarks and she's going to be focusing on rape as a crime. as a war crime. as a weapon of war. and look, i understand congressman jayapal's desire to change the subject to what's going on in gaza, something that activists and a lot of members of congress want to talk about but there's also desire by individuals in israel and women's groups and feminists and people who have been talking about rape as a weapon of war for decades now who want to talk specifically about this issue and one of the thing that sandberg says in her prepared remarks 30 years ago there was this big effort after the war in rwanda and congo, to focus on rape as a weapon of war to prosecute it and to make sure there's punishment for it before that, it was seen as that happens in war and she doesn't want the world to go back to that world again, where it's just kind of seen, yes, of course that happens in war just like looting happens in war, so she's going to put it to the world at the u.n. according to her prepared remarks, who is the world is going to believe, the hamas spokesman who said we don't do that sort of thing or the evidence you see in the bodies of these women whose bodies leave very clear evidence as to how their last moments on earth were spent. >> jake, this seems very black and white, yet there -- we've seen the resonance from the u.n., the attempts -- i think the word was balance from the congresswoman jayapal said yesterday. why in. >> i think there are a few reasons, one, you see this with the people tearing down the posters of the victims of kidnapping, there are people who are so outraged by what's going on in gaza that they think that any focus at all as to what happened on october 7th is perceived as justifying what is going on in gaza. they're unable to acknowledge the humanity of the israelis at all, because of they're so outraged by what happened -- what is happening right now in gaza as if one's heart or brain doesn't room for both. as if the politics of it all, you know, you have to choose. which i personally reject. i think that's one of the reasons. other people look at this and say, it's just antisemitism or it's just people who don't accept or acknowledge israel's right to exist and for some people that might be accurate as well. certainly the united nations doesn't have a blemish-free record when it comes to becoming anti-israel or antisemitism. they'll have to wonder why it is they were so eager to believe the absolute worst when it comes the allegations against brett kavanagh but when it comes to very credible, very serious allegations of rape committed by a group hamas that's a terrorist organization they've not had anything to say at all. i don't know. every individual and every organization is going to have to answer those questions themselves. israel right now is complying lots of very serious evidence of rape rape, firsthand witness accounts and for. i think there's going to be a full-pledged investigation going on, there is one in israel, and i think there's going to have to be more than that, and it's really honestly quite shocking and ugly, and there's been some great journalist done by bianna golodryga and dana bash on this subject and "the times of london", and certainly more. >> we appreciate your time this morning, thank you. >> thank you. we're continuing to follow the israeli military ramping up air strikes after announcing its expanding ground assault to the entire gaza strip. "new york times" report detailing a pattern of glaring vulnerabilities in america's air traffic control system. wait until you hear this, ahead. this morning, the supreme court set to hear arguments in its highest profile bankruptcy case in years, with millions of dollars on the line for thousands of victims of the opioid epidemic. this centers around purdue pharma's bankruptcy agreement in a provision that would protect the sackler family. purdue and sackler are behind oxycontin half a million people died from 1999 to 2020 from opioid overdoses. the family had agreed to pay up to $6 billion to purdue's fund. at the core of the case is the responsibility for the early days of the opioid crisis, a crisis that continues very much so today. listen to what one victim told jake tapper after the original settlement agreement was reached. >> what i told richard sackler was that i hope for the rest of his days that he hears our names in his dreams, that he hears the sirens, that he hears the screams of family members who have lost a loved one to an overdose on the bathroom floor. >> this case could also have very broad, wide-ranging implications for other bankruptcy cases, that face mass injury claims to ongoing legal challenges and financial penalties. joining us for all of this, our legal analyst joey jackson, and beth macy, the author of "dopes, dealers." thank you for being here, particularly for the victims who you have followed for years and chronicled in both of your books. the oral argument, we'll get the decision in a couple of months, what does that mean for them is this. >> they're just hoping to get some accountability. they say that this settlement in no way captures the scope of what oxycontin has done and that company has done in terms of fraud and harm. we've got 7 million people with opioid use disorder. there have been over a million deaths since oxycontin came out in 1996. and purdue is already twice admitting to felony misbranding in 2007 and again in 2020. >> beth, when i looked at this a bit more, the bulk of that money goes towards recovery programs and prevention programs that are crucial. only about 750 million of the 6 billion goes directly to the victims. but at the same time, it took years to even get to this settlement. is there also the side of this argument among those victims that say, you know, if we don't agree to this, then when are we ever going to see anything is this. >> right. some of the parents are divided but as the u.s. trustee who will be facing against purdue and sacklers' lawyers today has pointed out only 20% of the families eligible to vote on this even voted, and so, you know, i like to think of the families i have been following a decade now, they have been texting me all morning. they were out in front of the court at dark at 5:00 a.m. holding signs that say things like my dead son does not release the sacklers. they believe no amount of money is worth immunity and wealth for the architects of the opioid crisis. >> it's a good point, joey, what beth is talking about is something, essentially a loophole in all of this, third-party releases. what is the big impact of that? so you look at the catholic church and the lawsuits against it or the boy scouts of america. what the court decides here is going to impact victims across the board. >> yeah, there's no question about that, poppy. in a significant way, there are a lot of people who are ailing and hurting as a result of what occurred in the opioid crisis. the court issue here is one of immunity, and it's a very simple issue, quite frankly, for the supreme court. you have a bankruptcy judge who's essentially saying that because of what's called a not debtor release clause, a dealter, someone owing money. that would be purdue, and you have creditors who are owed money. the essence of it is the sacklers are not a party to the bankruptcy. why is the argument should they be immune from future liability as all. to the extent that the supreme court says that a bankruptcy court has the right for parties who are not in bankruptcy, who may be the millions and milli millionaires behind this, it sets a standard and precedent for not only purdue but for major corporations intfuture, a that is wholly significant. >> it was interesting to see the

two drones in the sea. >> as israel defends itself it matters how. >> brutality and callousness across the gaza strip, nowhere is safe. donald trump tries to flip the script. >> joe biden is the destroyer of democracy. >> dictatorship in the united states. >> it's about who protecting your freedoms. >> six weeks from the iowa caucuses. >> nikki haley is the most underestimated politician. good morning, everyone. brand-few overnight the israeli military ramping up air strikes after announcing it would expand its ground operations to the entire gaza strip, that of course includes the south where many civilians have fled. we're tracking a growing threat of this war spreading into a wider regional conflict. >> in the red sea, the pentagon said an american destroyer came to the rescue of three commercial ships that were attacked by ballistic missiles. the destroyer shot down many drones. we're keeping a close eye on israel's northern border, with lebanon, where israeli forces have been exchanging fire with hezbollah. three israeli soldiers were hurt by mortar shells fired. >> it's expanding its operations to the gaza strip, tension between israel and u.s. about civilians where are civilians to go now. >> reporter: we know about 80% of the population of gaza has already been displaced, many of them to the south, now over the weekend, the israeli military put out on social media a map breaking gaza up into hundreds of numbered blocks and on that map is a qr code which people can get on to and see perhaps where they can go that might be safe, where they should leave if it's not going to be safe, the problem is, many people in gaza don't have electricity to power their phones and secondly, often times the internet connection is very spotty and certainly what we've seen is a mounting death toll in gaza, according the palestinian ministry of health n a 24-hour period between saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon, 316 people were killed, 664 injured. now of course we always say it's the hamas-run gaza ministry of health, these numbers are widely recognized as fairly accurate, and what we know is that over the weekend, the death toll from the 7th of october in gaza has now exceeded 15,000, in fact this morning i was speaking with a gaza resident who told me at the beginning of the war israelis were warning people to leave a building, then that building without be struck, he said that's no longer the case, more or less, and that when the israelis strike, they don't strike one building they take out an entire block and that's what we've seen in places like the refugee camp knot of gaza city and just to the east of gaza city. >> ben, to the north, how significant is the shelling that has been going all weekend and continues today between israel and hezbollah in lebanon, what does it mean? >> reporter: well, certainly what it means, and hezbollah actually observed the seven-day truce between hamas and israel, but once the truce ended on friday morning they started to open fire again and what we're seeing it's been fairly intense back and forthhezbollah, now un following the rules of engagement, whereby hezbollah only hits targets close to the border on the israeli side and vice versa, so this sort of perhaps hezbollah's way of saying, yes, we're part of the fight, we're helping gaza, but they don't seem to want to go so far that it might ignite a full-scale war between hezbollah and israel give than many people in lebanon still recall the level of destruction wreaked upon lebanon during the 2006 war between hezbollah and israel. >> ben, thank you so much for your reporting especially given all of your experience in lebanon as well. ben was just talking about fierce of escalation and they're growing. we're told it was part of sustained attack that saw three commercial vessels come under in international waters. joining us now is to discuss retired general mark herzling. one of the parts of the pause that didn't get the appreciation was that the hostilities and the possibility of expansion also simmered for a moment. that's changing now. what's the risk here. >> you're spot-on, phil. what's interesting about it seems that someone, perhaps iran told the various rebel groups lay low for a while, let's see what happens and see how long we can keep this pause in place, what we're seeing now is an increase of firing of rockets and missiles from both hezbollah and the houthis in yemen. multiple ships, one of two carrier strikes groups and they happen to be positioned and maneuvered in one of the hottest spots around, in the middle of the gulf of aden. they are doing a great job, they've seen a significant fight in that area intercepting missiles coming out of yemen. >> lloyd austin, the defense secretary with quite a stark warning over the weekend about, again, back to what blinken has said and kamala harris the vice president has said, how israel does this matters. let's listen to the defense secretary. >> in this kind of fight the center of gravity is the civilian population. if you drive them into the arms of the enemy you replace a tactical victory with a strategic defeat. so, i have repeatedly made clear to israel's leaders that protecting palestinian civilians in gaza is both a moral responsibility and a strategic imperative. >> republican senator lindsey graham has been pretty supportive of lloyd austin really went after him in his interview with dana bash yesterday. listen to what he said about that. >> i just lost all confidence in this guy, how about focusing on protecting our soldiers, men and women in syria and iraq, strategic defeat would be inflaming the palestinians. they're already inflamed. they're taught to hate the jews and to kill them. >> dana pushed back, what about this issue that you talk about of insurgent math, and she was so spot-on to do that, can you explain what that means and what lloyd austin is saying here. >> i can, first i want to give a disclaimer, secretary austin is both a friend, he was my commander in iraq and he was my classmate at west point. but he's right. tactical victories in operations can turn into strategic defeat if the force, the fighting force ignores the treatment of civilians. we learned that multiple times in both afghanistan and iraq. insurgency math as you point out and dana bash did a great job of doing that yesterday, insurgency you can't kill your way to victory, you have to consider the effects of your actions on future generations, how many more insurgents you're generating by your actions, what kind of hatred does a population have, now senator graham was right, the issues in the gaza strip and the west bank and in other places had been inflamed over the years and there's a lot of political background, but that's because the palestinian people have not been treated correctly by politicians, both on their side and on opposite sides. austin spent ten years in combat learning the implications of insurgency math, how if you kill so many, many more will come to the aid of the insurgents and unfortunately that's what the united states and president biden has been trying to discuss with prime minister netanyahu, unfortunately, you know, the israeli government wants to kill this threat on their border within their own country, and they're on a razor's edge on how do you kill a terrorist organization that's using the people as human shields wherever they move, and this is why that operation will likely expand in the southern part of gaza, as the civilian population moved so has the hamas terrorists. as you watch the films, there are a lot of many call military-age males walking around those streets, you toebt see a lot of women and children in some of those photographs coming out of gaza, how do you differentiate between the hamas terrorists and the innocent palestinian civilians in those areas, it's very difficult in an insurgency operation. donald trump is calling president biden the, quote, the destroyer of democracy, we'll tell you what else is he's saying and who else he's targeting. house gop has one fewer member, but speaker johnson said they still have the votes to open an impeachment inquiry into president biden. we'll explain next. so if you believe it, that's a clock to show you we're six weeks away from the iowa caucuses and president biden sharpens his attacks against his likely repeat opponent donald trump. is now flipping the script, accusing biden of being a huge threat to democracy. it was really interesting to see him do this over the weekend. >> reporter: yeah, those signs were handed out at that trump event before he took the stage, clearly they're pushing this messaging and a lot of this is coming from the fact that a trump and advisers that donald trump will not only win iowa but also be the republican nominee and they want to set the stage for the general election. there are six weeks into the iowa republican presidential caucus donald trump is already signal a pivot to a potential general election matchup. >> joe biden isn't the defender of american democracy. >> reporter: offering his most forceful rebuttal yet that a second trump term would threaten american democracy. >> president biden is the destroyer of american democracy. >> reporter: trump facing felony charges over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election claiming it was biden who posed the threat to the country. >> the wreckers of the american dream, the american dream is dead with them in office. it's sad zbrr trump also continuing his renewed attacks on on the affordable care act, known as obamacare. >> we're going to fix it because it's a cat strophe for family budgets. >> reporter: his rival ron desantis said he would seek to replace the healthcare. >> obamacare hasn't worked. we'll supersede with a better plan. >> reporter: democrats seizing on the threat made by republican candidates. . the biden campaign airing this ad in battleground states. >> go back to the policies that helped the rich get richer and left so many people behind, i don't want to go back. >> reporter: while trump and biden are both looking toward the general election, trump still needs to beat out his gop rivals for his party's nomination. desantis still trailing trump in the polls also in iowa this weekend completing his tour of the state's 99 counties. >> by the fact that i'm willing to do this, that should show you that i consider myself a servant and not a ruler. >> reporter: the florida governor projecting confidence that he'll win iowa and with it the nomination. >> we'll win iowa, i think it's going to help propel us to the nomination. >> reporter: despite a weekend of internal drama three top staffers exiting the main superpac supporting his campaign efforts. and poppy, as desantis is facing all of this inner turmoil, nikki haley has seen a surge in her campaign. still be hard for her to beat donald trump. of course anything can be happen. and iowa can be a wild card. house republicans are starting off this week one member short after george santos was ousted on friday. speaker johnson pushing guard with an impeachment inquiry into president biden. lauren fox is on capitol hill. i think, again, george santos, we miss you, we don't. the big question is, on the impeachment inquiry itself, does speaker johnson have the support from moderates in. >> reporter: that's the key question, phil, and this is obviously just another piece of evidence that we have seen that johnson is really trying to manage this very delicate balance between giving his right flank something that they're excited about and ensuring that his moderate members have what they need in their re-elections, right now the question, does he have the votes to move forward with the impeachment inquiry? former house speaker mccarthy made the decision that he didn't need to move forward with that vote on the house floor. what you're hearing now from some moderate members, at least some members who are running in swing districts is the question is whether or not there's enough evidence, that might not be the case yet in their minds but they do believe this is an important step in case the house has to go to court in order to get documents and interviews they want for their impeachment inquiry and their argument, this is an important step forward if we have to go to court we have to show some precedent that we took every step necessary to try and get this information, so they believe this really strengthens their case in court, which is why some moderates are starting to show an openness, we'll keep a close track of where things stand, representative ken buck still say they're opposed with moving forward with this. >> it's only been a matter of weeks for the new speaker, how behind the scenes is he dealing with this very divided conference? >> reporter: obviously, this is part of the very difficult task for the house speaker and it was going to be true of any speaker, our colleagues manu raju and have this great piece out this morning, lays out behind the scenes how johnson is trying to make inroads with his right flank, knowing there will be moments he'll disappoint them. chip roy has made his dissatisfaction clear on the floor. saying they haven't accomplished anything all year. that's a really hard sell on when you're out on the campaign trail. there's not a accomplishment for house republicans to point to. as he moves forward with what he's going to do when it comes to ukraine funding, israel funding and the like. phil. >> lauren fox on capitol hill, thank you. a father on his death bed reveals something so shocking about a course the 1968 bank heist classic the thomas crown affair, authorities say that movie inspired bank teller to. he walked out of the bank with $215,000 in paper bag and he vanished. just for context, $1.7 million today. but for more than 50 years, no one knew he had done it. not until his daughter said he confessed to her on his death bed before passing away from lung cancer in 2021. thomas randele's daughter is sharing her story in a new pod cast. she joins us now. ashley, we appreciate you joining us this morning, i think this story is one, it's wild, two, people are completely fascinated by it. the question is, the idea of doing the podcast, why did you decide this is how you wanted to do this. >> thank you so much for having me. i knew it was really important to tell my dad's full story. so much to a life one moment when you're 20 years old. it gave me the opportunity to tell this compelling story in an exciting medium. podcasting allows incredible storytelling, it really feels like you're listening to movie when you listen to this podcast. >> i also think that the story itself feels like it's a movie on several different points throughout including -- i want to start how you found this out, you watch ncis and crime shows regularly, watching an episode in 2021 was first how this came to your attention, explain. >> it was. my mom, dad and i were sitting in the living room watching ncis and he looked over at us and calmly said, ladies, just in case anything ever comes up, i had to change my name when i moved here. the authorities are probably still looking for me, i don't want to talk about it, but just so you know in case it ever comes up you're not blindsided. then we went back to ncis. >> then what? >> i realized that wasn't enough information and the next day i sat down with him alone and really pushed him on finding out his name, if his name wasn't tom randele, i deserved to know my father's name and my name. he finally said that he would tell me as long as i promised not to look into it and that's when he told me his name was ted conrad. i didn't listen to him and i looked into it. that night at 2:30 alone in my childhood bedroom, i put in the name ted conrad, missing, that's when i saw the headline, like vault teller heist and i was absolutely floored. i couldn't have been more shocked. i said out loud to the room, oh, my gosh, my life is a lifetime movie. >> the process of processing to some degree, where are you now versus when you had that moment of realization? >> i'm definitely i think in a more solid place now. honestly working on this podcast, to investigate my dad, has helped me transition through a lot of the uncertainty and a lot of the grief of losing him, what's so fascinating about this project specifically is the psychology of a criminal is fascinating to me. but we hear a lot about it from criminals who were caught. and my dad was never caught. so being able to have those conversations with him and really delve into that psychology of what does it mean to be a fugitive on the run for 50 years, to have to keep that huge secret, but then also, what other secrets do you then have to keep from your friends, from your family, i mean from your wife and child, to keep that original secret and protect yourself? it's been a healing journey but fascinating. >> real quick, everyone should listen it's fascinating story, any idea where the money went? >> i don't have a big bag of money. i mean, it sounds like when he first moved here he lived in a gorgeous apartment and didn't work all that much and it was gone within a few years of just living a really nice life in boston. >> right. ashley the story is fascinating, the podcast is out today. thank you so much for joining us. >> yes, thank you so much. more details coming to light about hamas' horrific crimes on october 7th including reports of rape and sexual assault. our jake tapper joins us to discuss a string of raids in moscow against lgbtq bars. we'll tell you why it's happening, next. new this morning, police in russia raided several gay bars in moscow over the weekend, after a top court in russia banned the lgbtq movement calling it quote extremist. according to two independent online news outlets. shocking news, why were the raids carried out and what are the long-term impacts? >> the long-term impacts could be huge for the gay and lesbian and traens gender and queer community in russia. there were three venues that were raided this weekend and they're not necessarily gay bars or clubs per se, but gay entertainment venues where apparently events wither taking place and that's very significant even though the authorities there are saying that no one was detained in those raids, some documents photographed from those people there that in and of itself could have a chilling effect. they're saying they were normal drug raids but folks from the gay and lesbian community on the ground don't buy that. they're definitely terrified at what happened. the reason this significance is another sign of massive crackdown that's happening in russia on the gay and lesbian, transgender and queer community there. what happened on thursday the country's supreme court didn't not only ban the lgbtq movement but they declared who's member of that community, in other words, all the folks in russia are gays, lesbians, transgenders, are all extremists, that could have huge legal repercussions for those folks, again this something that we've seen over the past couple of years a big crackdown happening on that community, life has become a lot more difficult for them over the past couple of years and the other thing we have to say one of the reasons why vladimir putin he's doing this is to counter western influence and why he 's conducting his invasion of ukraine. this morning the supreme court is set to hear a high-stakes case to determine if the make of oxycontin can proceed with its bankruptcy. what this coululd mean, , next. dear moms and dads, what you have achieved here today is going to help us and our futures. it is why we're coming up on stage to collect your diplomas. mom, love you always. vo: when you graduate, they graduate. visit finishyourdiploma.org to find free and supportive adult education centers near you. a warning to our viewers, the testimony you're about to hear are very graphic and very disturbing, a new report revealing horrific stories of rape and sexual violence during hamas' attack on october 7th. sharing details of rape and other atrocities. a 39-year-old witness who attended the nova music festival on october 7th said, quote, i saw this beautiful woman with, she was screaming stop it, already i'm going to die, anyway from what you're doing just killed me. when they were finished they were laughing and the last one shot her in the head. a police commander leading israel's investigation, it's clear that sexual crimes were part of the planning and the purpose was to terrify and humiliate people. >> a commander of rescue unit we collected 1,000 bodies from the kibbutz, it was clear they were trying to spread -- these horrific accounts come as israeli delegation to u.n. will hold a special session on focusing this. former chief operator of meta sheryl sandberg. >> the silence on this from too many is deafening. we have come so far in believing survivors of rape and assaults in so many situations how can we ignore how these women spent the very last moments of their lives. >> quote, we're alarmed by the numerous accounts of gender-based atrocities and t sexual violence during those days. also i want to listen to this exchange between our dana bash and democratic congressman, this was yesterday. silence from many progressive women in congress on these rapes be hamas. listen. >> i've condemned what hamas has done -- >> specifically against women. >> absolutely the rape, of course. but i think we have to remember that israel is a democracy, that's why they're a strong ally of ours and if they don't comply with international humanity law, they're bringing themselves to a place that makes it much more difficult strategically for them to be able to build the kind of allies. >> with respect, i was asked about the women and you turned it back to israel. i'm asking about hamas in fact -- >> i answered your question, dana, i said it's horrific and i think rape is horrific. sexual assault is horrific. i think it happens in war situations. hamas are using these as tools. however, i think we have to be answered about bringing in the outrages against palestinians, 15,000 palestinians have been killed. >> joining us now is jake tapper. sheryl sandberg is a big name, she wrote that cnn op-ed about this a couple of weeks, what is she going to say today at the u.n.? >> reporter: well, to get an early copy of her remarks and she's going to be focusing on rape as a crime. as a war crime. as a weapon of war. and look, i understand congressman jayapal's desire to change the subject to what's going on in gaza, something that activists and a lot of members of congress want to talk about but there's also desire by individuals in israel and women's groups and feminists and people who have been talking about rape as a weapon of war for decades now who want to talk specifically about this issue and one of the thing that sandberg says in her prepared remarks 30 years ago there was this big effort after the war in rwanda and congo, to focus on rape as a weapon of war to prosecute it and to make sure there's punishment for it before that, it was seen as that happens in war and she doesn't want the world to go back to that world again, where it's just kind of seen, yes, of course that happens in war just like looting happens in war, so she's going to put it to the world at the u.n. according to her prepared remarks, who is the world is going to believe, the hamas spokesman who said we don't do that sort of thing or the evidence you see in the bodies of these women whose bodies leave very clear evidence as to how their last moments on earth were spent. >> jake, this seems very black and white, yet there -- we've seen the resonance from the u.n., the attempts -- i think the word was balance from the congresswoman jayapal said yesterday. why in. >> i think there are a few reasons, one, you see this with the people tearing down the posters of the victims of kidnapping, there are people who are so outraged by what's going on in gaza that they think that any focus at all as to what happened on october 7th is perceived as justifying what is going on in gaza. they're unable to acknowledge the humanity of the israelis at all, because of they're so outraged by what happened -- what is happening right now in gaza as if one's heart or brain doesn't room for both. as if the politics of it all, you know, you have to choose. which i personally reject. i think that's one of the reasons. other people look at this and say, it's just antisemitism or it's just people who don't accept or acknowledge israel's right to exist and for some people that might be accurate as well. certainly the united nations doesn't have a blemish-free record when it comes to becoming anti-israel or antisemitism. they'll have to wonder why it is they were so eager to believe the absolute worst when it comes the allegations against brett kavanagh but when it comes to very credible, very serious allegations of rape committed by a group hamas that's a terrorist organization they've not had anything to say at all. i don't know. every individual and every organization is going to have to answer those questions themselves. israel right now is complying lots of very serious evidence of rape rape, firsthand witness accounts and for. i think there's going to be a full-pledged investigation going on, there is one in israel, and i think there's going to have to be more than that, and it's really honestly quite shocking and ugly, and there's been some great journalist done by bianna golodryga and dana bash on this subject and "the times of london", and certainly more. >> we appreciate your time this morning, thank you. >> thank you. we're continuing to follow the israeli military ramping up air strikes after announcing its expanding ground assault to the entire gaza strip.
