>> cnn inside gaza. a first-hand look at the fighting as gazans suffer, hamas leaders are still nowhere to be found. living a life of luxury 1,000 miles away. plus, exclusive cnn reporting on the mar-a-lago documents case. a long list of witnesses including a maid, plum eastern w wood maker on that list. and china ashgs super power with a stunning message for chinese women. quit your jobs, stay home, go have babies. let's go "out front." good evening. tonight, a first-hand look at hamas training camps. these are new pictures. we were embedded with israel's military as they made a way to the hamas training camp. it includes several buildings. cnn reported from gaza under the israel defense forces at the same times. cnn does retain full editorial control. they are now fighting hamas block-by-block, house-by-house closing in on the heart of hamas' intelligence and operational activities. according to israel, 80,000 people traveled south alone. they're agreeing to pause the military operations in northern gaza for four hours a day so people with leave. just moments ago, benjamin netanyahu made it clear that this is not a cease-fire. >> we have not agreed to cease-fire and the victory of iran's access of terror. there is not a cease-fire without the release of the israeli hostages. >> so all of this comes as another group in gaza that palestinian islamic jihad acknowledged that they are holding israeli hostages. the group leased a video of two hostages, a 77-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy. they are ready to release them but didn't know when they would be released, whether it would actually happen. we're out front live in tel aviv. walk us through what you saw today inside gaza. >> they must submit footage for review. cnn had editorial control over our reporting. having said that, went in with the idea of staying in northern gaza. not get inting in more than a m. what we saw was farmland. it was essentially all torn up. the fields lined fall ow. there was not sign of life in any direction. we got closer to civilian buildup, where there were homes, apartment buildings and entire neighborhoods that had bee n destroyed. they had a mock israeli tent there where they were practicing fighting. and they put out the videos when they went in and destroyed that training site. we got to see what was left of it as we moved around for 90 minutes to two hours inside of gaza before it was time to come out after looking around there. there were a number of destroyed vehicles that were right on the gaza border there. when i talked to the tank commander, he said those are destroyed vehicles that have been pulled out for the israeli military to look at in a contract between israel and the families of those that lost loved ones. they'll look at the vehicles and try to find some remnants, remains of a body to try to give closure there. as something they see as a duty they have to do for the families that have lost loved ones not only in the fighting but on the attack on october 7th. >> thank you. civilians in gaza continue to suffer, many hamas leaders are nowhere to be found. officials say that hamas leaders are living in luxury abroad. this as gazans phase a humanitarian crisis. we're out front. >> israel's 122nd division in central gaza. this video was provided by the israel defense forces. they say their troops are now well inside gaza city where they found hamas command and control as well as weapons making facilities. in the heart of gaza city, we'll reach more and more hamas strong holds. the civilians continue to suffer as israel presses on with the offensive. tens of thousands fleeing the northern part of the strip in recent days according to the u.n. while the palestinian ministry of health says thousands have been killed or wounded in hamas-controlled gaza. tough talk coming and threatening the israeli army. they're drawning inowning in thf gaza, he said. this will cost the life of the hose tajs. but he's not inside gaza. like much of the leadership, he's in the safety of qatar meeting with iran's foreign minister, there a cynical situation israeli columnist tells me. >> it's very easy to tell the palestinian in the gaza straight. fine. make the jihad, it's a war against israel and we give you an order from outside of gaza. >> both israel and the united states claim hamas' leadership is wealthy and, quote, live in luxury abroad. cnn is not able to verify the claims, but it's a stark contrast to the deteriorating living conditions they have faced under a 16-year blockade as the standoff between hamas and israel intensified . that tushdrned into a full-scal war with all of the consequences. hamas' leadership making clear again from outside of gaza they're willing to sacrifice more civilians in gaza. we have to pay a price, he asks. yes. and we are ready to pay for it. and hamas' leaders in exile are calling on citizens in nations of the region to sacrifice as well. this is former hamas boss who is also not inside the gaza strip. i call firstly on the surrounding countries, jordan, syria, lebanon and egypt all of its sons and daughters, your duty is bigger because you are closer to palestine. one thing that hamas' leadership in exile is doing is traveling around the region, obviously trying to further the aagenda yachlt in fact, we saw tend of the report there, he was part of a hamas delegation that also included the head of hamas. he traveled to cairo and egypt today. all we know from that meeting is that they met with the head of egyptian intelligence and the suffering there continues. >> such an interesting report. thank you. >> out front now, retired general joseph potel. good to have you with us. let's begin with what we paerd f -- heard from fred. it is such a stark contrast with what we're seeing in terms of how gazans are leading every day. does it threaten the hold on the power? >> i think, first of all, great to be with you. i think gaza, i think it demonstrates the lack of credibility in some of the leaders. this is not unlike what we saw with the taliban and al qaeda. the taliban in particular, kept leadership in qatar and taliban and al qaeda all kept the senior leaders and the comfort of pakistan while the fighters were in afghanistan. and, of course, iran, you know, executes all of their operations through proxy forces located out there and gives orders from the safety of tehran. this is, i think, very common to these types of organizations. >> in terms of the organizations, you have such a unique perspective. you've been inside a hezbollah tunnel in northern israel. the we saw the video about the hamas training camp. that took him to in gaza. when you look at that, your experience, what stands out to you in that video? >>. >> first of all that, is not dissimilar to what we would do with our forces. creating multiforce structures to allow our troops to train. this is exactly what they're trying to do. i think what it dmemonstrates i the sophistication of the organizations. they're not stagnant. they learn. they're innovative. they make good uses of resource that's they have. and to me this is just highlights the importance of continuing to keep pressure not just on hamas and he the other terrorist organizations that we normally deal with, but really paying attention to this as a long-term problem in the region. >> that's certainly a question about how long that long-term could be. i also want to get your take on the hostages. for the first time today, the palestinian islamic jihad confirmed that it is holding some of the israel hostages, possibly as many as 40. how does that impact efforts to get more leased? >> it takes a problem that is hard and adds another layer of complexity on to having two or more groups who are holding hostages, each have separate demands t demands. they look at them differently. they look at them valuely. some see them as a strategic asset and others in a different lite. for negotiators working on this, to try to get a peaceful lease of the hostages, makes it that much more difficult. of course, for the military, the intelligence communities are looking at this and having different organizations doing different things here just complicates the overall collection mission around these hostages. >> that raises questions, too, of whether they need to work together, too, in those efforts as their holding the hostages. president biden said today the u.s. weapons storage facility in eastern syria that's use bid iran's islamic revolutionary guard corps because they strike us. they would strike again this we have to. we have new pentagon video of that strike yesterday. u.s. and coalition forces in the region have been targeted 46 times in the past three weeks. how concerned are you tonight about a widening war in the middle east and u.s. involvement in that? >> well, i would be very concerned as most americans should be. iranian backed militias only have to be right one time to cause a significant number of casualties here and then we're in a different part of the war. i'm glad we're striking back. i think it's important we direct the strikes at those that are orchestrating the strikes on us. our job is to remove the uncertainty with iran and with the iranian-backed groups that we will not put up with this. it's a very important message to send right now. i think it helps contain the conflict and make it very clear that those that would want ebter, ebt enter, that's not the right approach. >> great to be with you. >> out front next, cnn cexclusie reporting, the handling of classified documents may want a maid and a wood worker to testify. joe manson announcing he'll not run for re-election. is that because mansion is eyeing a run for the white house? and he sleeps in his office, unlike so many americans, he is living paycheck to paycheck. is the newew housese s speaker like h his constitituents thana colleaeagues? exclusively, jack smith could be casting a very wide net when it comes to calling witnesses in the mar-a-lago classified documents case. a plumber, maid, wood worker to name a few called to testify. the list of potential witnesses is also, we're learning, getting under trump's skin when he learned the maid was asked to speak to federal prosecutors. the sources trump went, ballistic. paula reid is out front tonight. what is smith hoping to learn from the witnesses? >> eric yaa, they represent the eyes and ears of mar-a-lago. these are ordinary people who showed up to work and may have come into contact with some of the nation's most sensitive secrets. prosecutors also expected to call intelligence officials, secret service agents, but we learned how far down the mar-a-lago payroll investigators have gotten. let's take, for example, the wood worker that you mentioned. this say man who is working on crown molding in trump's bedroom in february 2022. he believes he may have seen classified documents. it could have been a movie prop. he spoke with federal investigators multiple times. when people saw the indictment, they were shocked, many of them, to see boxes of classified documents in a ballroom, bedroom, bathroom, place this is he do not believe. and this group of witnesses, a maid, chauffeur, plumber, they can really talk about the environment at the resort and speak to just how vulnerable they were on a day-to-day basis. as you noted, the former president is frustrated how deep into the resort they have gotten. but before any of these folks can be called as a witness, there needs to be a trial. right now the judge overseeing this case, she is contemplating whether to push this back beyond the election and if former president trump is elected, then he could probably get the entire case dismissed. >> we'll be watching out to see how that plays out. right now, co-editor in chief of the just security legal block, brian, when you look at this how significant is thissoestimony b? >> it could be highly significant, especially if you try to match it up with the indictment. one of the most important pieces is that trump directed one of the aides to take the boxes from the storage facility, bring them to the private residence where he then picked up the documents he wanted and then returned only about half of them back to the storage facility. who would know about that? he went ballistic when he found out that maid that cleans the bedroom suite was asked to speak with the fbi. why would he go ballistic? probably because he's worried about something that's not good for him and that she knows about it. she would maybe identify if there were 64 boxes in his private residence, and if these -- it takes time, several days to go through them. >> these are really the eyes and ears hh -- paula also mentioned constraints in terms of the testimony and security. >> that's a great question. so they could have very important information. there is also like the eyes and ear that's they're witnessing everything. they may be accompanying the former president. you have to be very concerned. you want a judge that has national security matters that can ensure the evidence that is relevant that case comes in, but at the same time, does it not reveal important security information that could be damaging for how do these details work? what are the movements of the former president? how do they operate when trying to protect him? that is potentially relevant. we want to know where he was at which times. that is the delicate balance that has to be struck. >> the judge, he is a trump aporte appointed judge, she may push it past the election citing the president's busy schedule and also this need for the attorneys to go through all of the evidence here. what do you think the chances are that this does, in fact, get pushed past the election? >> i think there is a very good chance it does get pushed. the judge in this particular case has demonstrated extraordinary favor by the president. she got overturned by a u unanimous panel. they say this is beyond what he have done. you shouldn't have exercised jurisdiction. and then shown hostility towards the government that i haven't seen from a judge even like recently trying to say, when you set this deadline for when the case is going to be, we want to put you on notice, trump asked to suspend that case f he's asking to suspend it, it doesn't interfere with you moving ahead. she got upset for the government for suggesting that to her, just bringing her attention to it. that is very unusual. what does he want to have this pushed beyonded election? >> interesting to see if that impacts the other cases. thank you. >> so out front next, what do joe mansion and the rock have in common? here's your hint -- 2024. >> accident have a conservrvati bebent in his s philosophyhy. new tonight, joe mansion is not seeking re-election in 2024. major blow to democrats hoping to hold on to that seat in west virginia, a seat that trump won by 39 point in 2020. mansion is also hinting at a run for president. >> what i will be doing is traveling the country and speaking out to see if there's an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring americans together. we need to take back america and not let this divisive hatred further pull us apart. >> out front now, our number's whiz. harry, take us through the numbers. what sort of support does joe mansion have were he to launch a bid to the run to the white house? >> it is 10%. that is either really high or really not high. >> better than 9%. >> better than 9%. better than 0%. certainly not up in the frontrunners. but 10% could be a lot in a race in which we already have two other third party candidates involved, right? the two frontrunners, trump and joe biden are under 40%. a lot of folks don't like that. >> in your estimation, who fares better with the joe mansion in the race, joe biden or trump? >> i don't have to think hard about this. i think joe mansion is a democrat. he's been a democrat all his life. i think it will be very trouble some for the president if he were there. i think generally these third party candidates and independent candidates has bigger appeal to some republicans. i think they help trump because they lower the threshold that you need to win. trump's never got above 46 piers piers -- 46% of the vote. he needs a lower ceiling to win the presidency. and third party comments help him. that was true in 2016. so this wouldn't be good news. now we'll see what senator mansion does. i'm reminded that dick durbin called him the greatest tease in american politics. and i suspect we're going to see -- we're going to see why in the next few months. >> we may be hearing some lines repeated. you mentioned cornell west and rfk jr. and jill stein throwing her hat in the ring again. harry, remind us in, 2016, when she ran, what did that look like in terms of numbers? >> she only got 1% of the vote nationally in the key swing states. remember how tight that race was. when you look at those key great battleground states, michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, the amount votes she got is more than the margin between hillary clinton and trump. so she, in many people's minds played a spoiler. when we look at such a tight race this time around, any extra addition to the equation throws it into some state of who the heck knows? and maybe make the difference. >> the other aspect of this is that joe mansion could be on a ticket that is a national ticket but not at the top of that ticket. there is an effort to get on the ballot that purr poertports if e a democrat and republican together this will be a noble alternative to a tired biden-trump election. but what they really believe is you could have, you know, take a republican, or take a democrat who is popular. maybe mansion is not atop that ticket. the argument is a republican at the top of the ticket with a mansion second would pull from trump. that is their argument. they have a lot of polls -- david axelrod can rebutt. but that is the argument that they're make. >> we're in this place, right. it's a year ouct. so many things could happen. maybe a fresh face in politics, dwayne "the rock" johnson, he is actually on the radar of both parties. take a listen to this moment. >> the beginning of the year, tend of the year, rather in, 2022, i got a visit from it the parties. asking me if i was going to run if i could run. >> wow. >> it's a big deal. and it came out of the blue. >> wow. >> it was one after the other. they brought up the poll. they brought up their deep dive research that would prove, should i ever decide to go down that road -- >> you'd be a real contender? >> yeah. >> david, what do you make of that? >> look, he's a really popular figure. knees popular culture. i think we have seen that people can make the jum p from popular culture to political success in america. he crosses a bunch of racial lines, you know, political lines and so on. but there is a lot of -- there's a lot between there and what it takes to actually run for president, become president. he says family considerations caused him not to do it. so we'll see. i think that say conversation for the future. no matter what the party says, i think harry will tell you, he should put down money that one of the major party candidates is going to win. >> when you look at that, i don't know that the rock is a no labels guy at this point. but it is fascinating to hear parties reaching out to somebody who checks a lot of boxes, but does that mean they're really fit and have the experience to run a country? >> i mean, i wonder -- look, by design, they wanded citizens to be servant, civil servants. i don't think there is any pedigree to being president other than getting a majority of the votes. i would say i don't know which party reached out to him. sounds like no labels query. but -- it's hard to imagine, like, ron -- the rnc -- but, you know. either way. the what it shows is we're in this fantasy baseball chapter where it looks like we know who the candidates -- we have a sense who have the candidates are going to be on the republican side and democratic side and we expect it to be joe biden. people are looking around for others. there are people in the donor class that whisper about oprah and fantasize about oprah as a vp. she is new to politics. >> everything olds is new again. >> everywhere, all the time. and it is because, you know, people get tired of the choices. >> and, yet, the choice -- >> margaret, you call it fantasy baseball. others call it a nightmare right now. >> harry, what do you call it? >> i call it a dream come true. i would have never experienced anything quite like this. this is something like out of a script rather than realism. but parentally we're now living in the west wing or something like. that. >> we just might be. there is a lot. it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. you're right, we know who the players are. and, yet, we keep hearing all these things. all right. great to see all of you. thank you. thank you for playing along. >> next, house speaker mike johnson. he sleeps on the floor of his office. his liabilities are in the hundreds of thousands. is owe frankly more like the average american than the average congressman? plus, quit your job and stay home, have children. that is exactly what china is now telling women to do.o. this is s 2023.. how's the chicken? the prawns are delicious. oh, i have a shellfish allergy. one prawn. very good. did i say chicken wrong? tired of people not listening to what you want? it's truffle season! ah that's okay... never enough truffles. how much are they? it's a lot. oh okay - i'm good, that - it's like a priceless piece of art. enjoy. or when they sell you what they want? yeah. the more we understand you, the better we can help you. that's what u.s. bank is for. huge relief. yeah... ♪ tonight, kevin mccarthy unloaded on the republicans that ousted him. he sharply criticized matt gaetz and nancy mayes, they both joined six other republicans to vote mccarthy out as speaker. here's more of what he said about gaetz and mayes. >> people have to earn the right to be here. and i just think -- i don't mean to take it personally. he doesn't have a conserve tough bent in his philosophy. and just the nature of what he focuses on. if you watch, just her philosophy and the flip-flopping, yeah, i don't believe she ones re-election. i don't think she'll probably earned the right to get re-elected. >> now this comes as mccarthy's replacement is struggling to come up with a plan to avoid a government shutdown in just eight days. >> we're out front tonight. mccarthy certainly not mincing words there. >> no. especially not. in -- certainly not. there are questions about how the new speaker, mike johnson, will avoid a government shutdown and avoid the same fate as kevin mccarthy who had to rely on democratic support to avoid a government shutdown, passing the short term passing bill. that prompted a revolt from the right flank, pushing him out of the speakership. now mike johnson in a similar predicament. there are concerns that johnson could get pushed out. there are concerns whether he could pass a in the house. there is no word from the speaker's office about how he plans to proceed with this eight days until government shuts down. the house is out of session. the senate is out of session. nobody is here. before they left town, there were warnings and concerns from some of the colleagues that the honeymoon period that he enjoyed for this brief period could be ending. >> i think there is a honeymoon period here, maybe 30 days with what's going on the floor today. i think that indicates the honeymoon might be shorter than we thought. >> so the question is that how he plans to proceed. if he tries to move too far to the right, he may lose republican sport. he could prompt a revolt from the senate. prompt opposition from the white house. that kpcould potentially lead ta government shutdown. if he moves forward with legislation that could get support from the democrats, that could prompt the same problems that mccarthy had. as one congressman just told me, erica, he said the house is a mess. walking a high wire in gale force winds, that's us right now. >> we appreciate it. thank you. be sure to tune in for the full interview with former speaker mccarthy on "inside politics" this sunday at 11:00 a.m. eastern. speaker johnson faces his na major test on capitol hill. we're learning more about the congressman himself, who he is. the investigation into speaker johnson's investigation shows he has more in common with americans than he does with colleagues. >> freshly minted speaker of the house mike johnson facing questions over how he keeps his own financial house in order. >> look, i'm a man of modest means. >> cnn's review of johnson's personal financial disclosures and campaign financial documents since coming to congress in 2017 reveal that new speaker appears to be living paycheck to paycheck. financial records show that johnson, like many americans, does not appear to have much of a safety net. for the past two years, he has not reported any assets. and he has never even report aid checking account on financial disclosure forms. the speaker's office says he has a personal bank account which is exempt from house reporting rules because it is noninterest bearing. meaning, he does not have to disclose this type of account under house rules. while it's unknown how much is in that account, a source with knowledge of his financial situation tells cnn that account is not big enough to be leaving large sums of money in interest on the table. all this as johnson's liabilities are plenty. a mortgage for his family home valued between $250,000 and $500,000, a personal loan from 2016 between $15,000 and $50,000. and a equity line of credit taken in 2019 for less than $50,000. as a congressman, johnson was making $174,000 a year. his salary will now jump to $223,500 as speaker. he made over $100,000 teaching on line courses at liberty university since 2018. collected $30,000 from the college. on capitol hill, to save money on d.c. rent, johnson is one of the many members of congress that sleep in their offices. a source with knowledge says the speaker will continue sleeping in his office for now but did not know if that will always be the plan going forward. >> there are things on the minds of people. >> the standing is in stark contrast to the colleagues on capitol hill. with the median net worth of the colleagues in 2018 at just over $1 million. some former speakers have done well. nancy pelosi is worth more than $120 million. before coming to congress in 2017, johnson was a lawyer n 2016, he reported making over $200,000. >> it was a lawyer. i did constitutional law. and most of my career you spent in the nonprofit sector. >> and said that much of the money goes to taking care of his large family. >> we have four kids, five now that, are very active and have kids in graduate school, law school, undergraduate. we have a lot of expenses. >> that financial reality, not unlike most american families. >> i didn't grow up with great means. but i think that helps us be a better leader because we can relate to every hard-working american family. that's who we are. and i think it governs and helps govern my decisions and how you lead. >> now we don't know much about speaker johnson's wife and her full financial picture. we know she has some income coming in if. she, according to the disclosure forms, has income coming from a few places. a christian counseling company, work with a louisiana right to life educational committee as well as what is listed as various other clients on the disclosure forms. now the law makers are not required to say and disclose how much their spouses are making. but johnson, he goes a few steps further in the earlier disclosure forms, erica, he reveals how much he makes and is about $45,000 to $50,000 a year. that is in the earlier portion. he hasn't reported her salary since 2021. this is a very small snapshot of the family's full finances. >> appreciate it, thank you. >> out front next, china's president is now urging women to drop out of the workforce and have more babies. why? plus, the fbi now investigating letters sent to election workeks in mulult iple statetes that mae bebeen laced w with fentananyl. tonight, chinese president xi jinping with a frankly stunning message for women. quit your job, get married, have babies. will ripley is "outfront." >> reporter: china's communist rulers face a looming population crisis, a crisis some say they helped create. now they want women to help solve it by staying home and having more babies. the one-child policy, decades of forced abortions and other draconian measures imposed on the chinese people, preventing an estimated 200 million births may be backfiring, experts say. for the first time since the post famine years of the 1960s, china's massive population is shrinking. it may be too late to turn things around. 1.4 billion people living longer, getting older, aging faster than the social welfare system can keep up. china's birth rate also falling fast. far fewer babies, a baby bust that could cripple future growth. adding to beijing's biggest economic challenge in four decades, youth unemployment skyrocketing. many chinese young people struggling to find decent paying jobs, unable to financially support themselves, never mind their aging parents. marriage? children? forget about it. the male-dominated government says the solution is simple, a return to traditional family values. "we should actively foster a new type of marriage and childbirth culture". >> reporter: speaking at the chinese party's annual women congress, president xi jinping focused more on family and fertility than women in the workforce. china's most powerful leader since mao making his position clear, women need to go back home, have children and care for the elderly. >> translator: firmly listen to party's instructions and follow the party. >> reporter: sparking fears of a state-sponsored time warp, where women's rights take a back seat to boosting xi's vision. >> women will serve as reproductive tools at that time, and now the party wants more people so the party can do similarly abusive things, but just in the opposite direction. >> reporter: propping up the patriarchy in a nation notorious for suppressing, arresting, and silencing feminist voices. voices on chinese social media, the comments not scrubbed by state sensors seem to have a cynical take on so-called traditional family values, one writer using "seeing what my mom is going through, i have no desire to get married or have children." the kind of feeling some fear could ignite calls by the ruling elite to make sure chinese young people do exactly what the party wants them to do. >> i mean, it is really something. and will, just to drive this point home, this whose process started in part because of the communist party's own one-child policy. >> this is the sad irony of the whole thing, erica, and sadly, when families were forced to choose, son or daughter, a lot of families in china chose to have a son. as a result now, there is a shortage of women in china. 34 million more men than women. so they need women to give birth, yet they don't have enough in part because of this policy and the forced abortions that took place when families had to choose, to make a choice that no family should ever have to make in the opinion of certainly most people in the western free world. the other thing that's interesting is one of the most powerful things the communist party is not saying. it's a phrase they used every year at. gender quality is a basic policy. they're not saying that anymore. >> it does. it speaks volumes, will. really glad you brought it to us. thank you. "outfront" next, suspicious letters possibly laced with fentanyl have now been sent to election offices across the country, and the fbi is investigating. tonight, federal law enforcement on high alert. a suspicious mail is sent to election offices around the country, some of it potentially laced with fentanyl which could be lethal. washington, oregon, nevada, california and georgia among the states where that mail was sent. georgia's secretary of state brad raffensperger speaking out about the letters. >> if they don't condemn this, they're not worthy for the office they're running for. this is domestic terrorism, and it needs to be condemned by anyone that holds elected office and anyone what wants to hold elected office. >> it was received in kings county, washington, home to seattle. that letter arriving as officials counted ballots from this week's elections. it prompted an evacuation of some 150 workers
