i'm boris sanchez with brianna keilar live in washington, d.c. anderson cooper is in tel aviv where sirens are going off. anderson? >> yeah. these air raid sirens have started 30 seconds before we came on air. we saw one interceptor going up from iron dome. we have not seen -- heard any explosion and now it seems like sirens are down. it would seem whatever it was, was either intercepted at a greater distance or it's done. oh. that was an interception. just took a while, perhaps, for the sound to reach us. there's low cloud cover so it's a little hard to see exactly all the rockets when they come, they come from that direction, obviously, the direction of the gaza strip. today secretary of state antony blinken was back here in tel aviv meeting with israel's defense minister and newly formed cabinet. that's one of the big developments that occurred on the ground today in israel as the military gears up for the next phase of the war. fighter jets struck hezbollah targets in lebanon as well. cnn's nic robertson is in sterrot. nic, talk about what you've been seeing. the tempo of strikes near you slowed down today? >> it did. but i think as dusk came, it really began to just pick up a little bit. fighter jets if the sky overhead, just really right around the time that those missiles that were coming in be on you would have been taking off from here. there was the sound of the jets coming through and often that's followed by an explosion. we've had a number of explosions this evening, but through the day, it was so quiet at times that it was almost eerily quiet. you couldn't hear any drones flying, you couldn't hear any helicopters, any jets, the artillery wasn't firing, no missile going in on gaza and created an impression this was a little bit of a lull to allow some diplomacy to get that humanitarian aid into gaza and potentially more fuel and food and water to come in. by this evening it has started picking up again. there are jets, usually when the rockets are fired out, you would expect to hear impacts behind us as well, anderson. >> nic, talk about what you have heard about the situation in gaza? we know several hundred thousand people are said to have moved to the south. >> yeah. a significant number moved to the south. you probably experienced the rain, the clouds you were talking about in tel aviv. there was a big downpour of rain here late this afternoon and we know that u.n. has been saying look, all these hundreds of thousands of people moving to the south, they don't have shelter, short of food, short of water, but the concern for the u.n. would be, as those people are left out in the open, you have -- and many of them are families, young children, elderly, they don't have shelter and so, of course, these heavy deluges of rain that seem to be sweeping through at the moment are going to have a health impact and make the conditions for all those people much worse. even though that high number of people has moved to the south, there are probably still about half a million people estimate according to the u.n. figures still in the north of gaza and we know in the north of gaza today there was a rocket strike that cook out the hamas leader, appeared to take down an apartment building that it is understood he would have been in. but families still left in the north, there is very much the risk today from even the limited strikes we've heard of being caught in the missiles and artillery, anderson. >> and jeremy diamond, what are you hearing on your end in terms of the diplomacy that was taking place? >> well, anderson, secretary of state antony blinken returning to israel today about a week after he engaged in basically shuttle diplomacy across the middle east. he was in saudi arabia. he was in jordan, egypt, the uae, qatar, all of the regional key players talking about the humanitarian situation in gaza and also making an effort to really try and prevent this war between hamas and israel from widening into a broader regional conflict. whether or not that can be achieved remains to be seen, particularly as we have seen some crossfire between israeli forces and hezbollah forces in lebanon across that border. the secretary of state making a point to reaffirm the support for israel, and its belief israel has a right and obligation to defend itself. >> you know our deep commitment to israel's right, indeed its obligation, to defend itself and to defend its people, and in that, you have -- you always have the support of the united states. >> and so in those comments it seems clear while the secretary of state is certainly trying to prevent this from becoming a broader regional conflict, the united states is not trying to prevent frirl doing what's needs to do in gaza to effectively eliminate hamas as israeli officials have made clear that is their objective in a war that even just today the defense minister said would be a long war and one that would be -- result in a heavy price for israel. all of this, the prelude to a potential visit by president joe biden here to israel. the israeli prime minister has invited biden to come and visit, but as of yet, the white house not confirming whether he will come. >> is there any progress with pressuring egypt to act? i know fuel trucks made it through into southern gaza today. >> there's ban lot of conflicting information a lot of finger-pointing over the last several days as u.s. officials have tried to get american citizens out of gaza and also to allow for food, fuel, and water and other humanitarian goods to make their way into gaza. just a couple hours ago, one of our cnn colleagues positioned at the rafah border crossing was able to see five u.n. trucks entering gaza with fuel. that is the first time that we have seen something like that in the last week and change since this all kicked off, not this saturday but the previous saturday. it does appear that some fuel is at least beginning to flow into gaza. whether that results in a broader humanitarian corridor being established, whether that results in more humanitarian aid and also for civilians including american citizens to make their way out of gaza remains to be seen. anderson? >> jeremy diamond, appreciate it. nic robert son as well. we'll come back to you over the course of the next several hours. u.n. relief chief warns gaza is being, quote, strangled by israel's siege and bombardment. the palestinian prime minister says israeli air strikes killed 2800 people and food and medicine are in short supply. supplies are running out. joining me now is the regional director of the world food program. cnn saw five fuel trucks enter gaza from the south. your united nations agency have you heard anything more about access opening up? >>. >> well, look we have food at the border now in egypt and we have food moving to the border in egypt. there is a large convoy ready to move in, but unfortunately, the convoy did not move. it didn't cross the border. inside there are hundreds of thousands of people who were on the move who are in their homes, who are in shelters, they have no water, they have no food, they have no electricity, they have no bathroom, and they have no fuel. the situation is becoming absolutely catastrophic. i mean, we have now to deal with dehydration and we will have to deal with starvation. we do need to bring food and humanitarian supplies, water and other things, inside. >> explain the kind of access you need to be able to have or you want to be able to have to feed palestinians in gaza to provide supplies to and who controls the distribution of those supplies once they are in gaza? >> so look, we have reached so far in palestine 520,000 people since the conflict broke out eight days ago, so we are providing bread and tuna to about half of them and the other half have received [ inaudible ]. we are still distributing, our teams, facing exactly the same situation as the displaced people. it's not an inch better for them, yet they are operating and we have provided three days ago 140,000 people with bread, yesterday 107,000 people with bread, today 160,000 people with bread and so it's going into the shelters. we can't reach everybody, unfortunately, in the houses because it's really, really complicated to reach people. so this is how we operate inside and we need to continue to have unimpeded safe access to all the people who need our assistance desperately now. but we need to replenish our stocks. we're running out of stocks inside. we have food, you know, but we still have inside, but also piling up at the borders enough to feed 1.3 million people for two weeks. now this food has to move in, and these negotiations need to conclude. we understand they're complicated but they need to conclude because it is about the people who will not survive without water and food in the very few days to come. >> do you have a sense of how many people right now are in the south of gaza? how many people may have moved from the north to the south? >> i think we must count. last time we counted it was 433,000 people displaced, that was before the evacuation order. now i mean, if you look in the -- our teams are telling us there are hundreds of thousands in the shelters, but we also understand that people are still in the north because people redeem our vouchers in the shops and shops are still operating in the north and so we see that people are actually redeeming vouchers in the north. you know, many have stayed back. we don't have the numbers. >> is there -- i know this may not be what your organization does, there is any effort in terms of bringing in tents, anything for shelters, for people in the south? i'm talking about actual living shelters for people in the south if they don't have -- if they're not able to find shelters and homes? >> so yes. humanitarian supplies are piling up at the border here, and that includes -- i don't have the details but that must include shelter equipment. we have -- we've had now two flights for the world program come in with high energy biscuits because that's easy to distribute and they have to -- the calories and the nutritional elements required for the day. but we also have brought in mobile storage units for us to be able to assemble our supplies at the border, but these supplies are now ready to move in and the details of how much shelter and equipment there is i don't have, but it's an absolute requirement as well. i mean, people now need medicine, they need food, they need water, they need fuel, they need electricity and they need shelter. just to explain to you, as the needs are growing, actually our ability to reach people is decreasing because bakeries need fuel, bakeries need water, and if they don't have that, they will not be able to produce bread anymore. imagine if even the bread we are distributing stops, what then? we need to be able to move in. >> corinne fleisher, thank you for your time. we'll check in with you in the days ahead. still ahead, israeli americans answering the call as israel is seeking hundreds of thousands of reservists from around the world to join the fight against hamas. their stories ahead. a chicago man charged with murder and hate crimes after police say he killed a 6-year-old boy and seriously wounded his mother. allegedly because they were muslim. ahead, how this incident is once again raising concerns of threats in the u.s. as israel calls up more than 360,000 reservists from all around the world really to join the fight against hamas israeli americans are among those answering the call. >> they say after seeing hamas gunmen storm into israel killing people and taking hostages they had to drop everything to defend their country. cnn's stephanie elam joins us now. you spoke to several israeli american reservists called up. what did they sair? >> what was interesting is the number of different stories. people dropping their lives in the middle of whatever they had going on, therapists, real estate agents, leaving their lives to be here. united in this moment because they feel it's so important to get to israel to defend their country. >> i've done my crying, and i can't even begin to process it. >> reporter: after seeing the first images from the attack on the nova music festival. >> i want go and i almost feel like i need to go. >> reporter: felt he had only one option, get to israel. >> i was just in shock. didn't make sense to me the things i was seeing. >> reporter: a los angeles native, he was born to israeli parents who moved to the u.s. 35 years ago. >> i love where i came from and i know who i am. i'm american, i'm israeli. >> reporter: after college, the 28-year-old joined the israel defense forces. he says two of his friends from his time in the idf were killed in the hamas attack. >> i started looking at flights. >> reporter: most halted service to israel. >> this is nothing short of a miracle. >> reporter: that's where jordan stepped in. >> i got a distress call from a soldier who needed to get back. i naively accepted the challenge and started making phone calls. >> reporter: in less than a week, the newly formed nonprofit israel friends raised private funds and organized the chartered flight to carry 150 people from a handful of nations to tel aviv along with tons of humanitarian aid. >> these were civilians a week ago, but are now reservists have call up orders to get back. i know none of them. they don't know each other. >> reporter: despite the early morning hour, there's a palpable energy of camaraderie and purpose. >> i'm volunteeringing there to see what they need. >> left behind a wife. >> i want to come home safely to my family. want to see my boys grow up. but you have to put that aside and stop the madness that's happening. >> reporter: maeri is leaving family behind. as a mom, how are you feeling right now? >> i'm feeling proud v , proud, proud. >> i can't lie, my stomach is turning. >> what are you most afraid of? >> just the outcome. fear of the unknown at the moment. >> reporter: this moment is for final goodbyes, as brave faces give way to tears. what's your overwhelming thought right now? >> we're going to fight for our country. we're ready. everyone is ready. i'm doing my part. >> reporter: one final embrace they pray won't be their last. i have been in touch with dorel. he made his way. there was a layover in spain. he was there and made it to tel aviv, and he had a warm meal and a night's sleep before reporting to base. the last thing he wrote to me, brianna and boris, i will be back soon with a fingers crossed emoji. >> very moving piece from stephanie elam. thank you very much. meantime in the united states, a 6-year-old palestinian american boy will be buried just about an hour from now after he was killed in a horrific attack on him and his mother at their chicago area home on saturday. wadea al fayoume was stabbed 26 times, his mother stabbed more than a dozen times allegedly at the hands of their landlord. >> police say 71-year-old joseph czuba targeted the family because they are muslim and right before the attack he had gotten into a heated argument with the mother about the ongoing conflict involving hamas in israel. he is being held without bond after making his first appearance in court on multiple charges including first-degree murder and hate crimes. members of the victim's community expressing outrage over this attack. >> he was a lovely boy who loved his family, his friends. he loved soccer. he loved basketball. he paid the price for the atmosphere of hate. he has no clue about these larger issues happening in the world, but he was made to pay for it. >> the boy's mother is recovering at a hospital and the sheriff's office says she is expected to survive. president biden leasing a statement condemning the violence saying the child's palestinian muslim family came to america seeking what we all seek, a refuge to live, learn, and pray in peace. this horrific act of hate has no place in america and stands against our fundamental values, freedom from fear for how we pray, what we believe, and who we are. just incredibly horrific and certainly we're thinking of that family. still ahead, house republicans set to vote on a new speaker tomorrow but one of them tells cnn they think jim jordan has a math problem, a pretty big one in fact. we're going to talk to a gop lawmaker about all of that coming up. here in the bay, ours and all of our stuff where we want to go. but, our cars can't take us e with unpaid tolls. vehicles with overdue, unpaid tolls may not be able to renew their registration until outstanding balances are paid. payment assistance is available. visit bayareafastrak.org/ase so go pay your unpaid tolls y and keep your wheels on the ! israel's top security official taking responsibility for not preventing the surprise terror attack on october 7th. ronan barr wrote, quote, the responsibility is on me for not creating sufficient warning to thwart hamas. israel's defense minister had this to say about the fight ahead. >> this will be a long war. the price will be high. but we are going to win for israel, for the jewish people and for the values that both countries believe in. >> here with us now, idf spokesman peter learner. colonel learner, thanks for being with us. in terms of the readiness of the idf, we've seen some more than 300,000 troops massing on the border. what is the wait for? is it a political decision to be made? is there a training component right now going on along the border for some of the troops? >> good evening. we are indeed at the end of day ten since the brutal massacre of women, children, and men in the southern communities of israel and 199 people that we've confirmed today that have been abducted into gaza by hamas. indeed, we are over the last ten days, we have been striking hamas extensively in widespread strikes against their entire organization from the leaders at the top through the institutions that they use in order to finance, train, equipment the terrorists and indeed down to the terrorists themselves that perpetrated this brutal act and these brutal atrocities against our people. the way forward as you rightly pointed out, over 300,000 reservists many or the vast majority positioned on the border with gaza, but also many of them positioned on the front with leb bap nonfor an uptick in violence. we are training our forces and need to be prepared for mobilization if the government ins instructs us to move forward. >> in terms of the humanitarian situation on the ground which we've been covering, i talked to an official from the u.n. about trying to get supplies across the rafah border into southern gaza. do you have any opposition to having gasoline? what is the opposition to having gasoline, food, shelter, supplies moved into southern gaza, given that's where hundreds of thousands of residents have moved down to? >> anderson, the conflict is ongoing. our job is to fight hamas and destroy their capabilities. the discussions taking place [ inaudible ] will lead to diplomacy to the diplomats and the war fighting for the warriors. currently i would say that the situation where we have seen and our action to evacuate people from the north of gaza is a temporary humanitarian measure, meant to keep people out of harm's way while we deal with hamas, and unfortunately, hamas has shown time and time again that they will constantly put the people of gaza in harm's way. so indeed, there is, according to the information we have from the international humanitarian organization community, there is food, there is now running water, for the last day, into the south and there are shelters. indeed, there are the bare minimum needs in southern gaza and indeed, war is a -- is a very complex issue, and it does have ramifications for civilians. we recognize that, and that is exactly the reason why we said to people, you need to head south. >> i certainly understand warriors have a job and there's humanitarian officials, but just from a military standpoint, i assume it would make your fight easier, the fewer civilians are in the north, which is i assume one of the reasons the idf was encouraging people to move further south. so just from a purely military position, wouldn't it make sense to allow as many supplies as possible, shelter supplies and the like, into the south of gaza? >> in a strange course of events today, unrwa, the u.n. relief agency, announced that some of -- one of their compounds had been raided by hamas and hamas commandeered fuel and medical supplies. if we allow and if there are supplies that come in, who is to guarantee hamas won't just take them? we have experience in this. this has happened in the past. they're looking at the political echelon and diplomatic echelon and we'll be looking for assurances before any cease-fire, before the idf is given any instructions to cease-fire. in the meantime we have through our interlock teres, the understanding that there are supplies in the south and there are the means to facilitate the humanitarian situation on the ground. we didn't tstart this war. it was hamas that started this war. we will win it. hamas has no right to continue to govern the gaza strip and utilize the gaza strip and the people of gaza as a human shield in order to launch their attacks against us. they will be banished from the realm of existence. >> lieutenant colonel learner, appreciate your time. stay with cnn's live special coverage on the war in israel. we'll be right back. . a federal judge just imposed a limited gag order on former president donald trump, restricting what he can say about his federal elections subversion case. he's now legally barred from attacking special counsel jack smith or his team or assailing potential witnesses, while issuing the order judge tanya chutkan said trump, quote, does not have the right to say and do what exactly he pleases. trump's attorneys tried to argue a gag order would be an unlawful imprijent in on trump's free speech rights as a presidential candidate. the judge disagreed saying trump's, quote, presidential candidacy does not give him carte blanche to vilify public servants for simply doing their job. another critical week on capitol hill, less than 24 hours from now, a house speaker vote and tonight a key gop meeting behind closed doors to debate congress jim jordan's bid to be speaker. the republican nominee still lacks the 217 votes that he needs, andnd he spent the weeke chipping away at reluctant holdouts with some success here. he has flipped a few, but one gop source tells cnn several top re to vote no during tomorrow's roll call vote. here's what jordan told cnn's manu raju. >> it will go to the floor tomorrow. it's not about pressuring anybody. we have to have a speaker. you can't open the house and dot work of the american people and help our dearest and closest friend israel if you don't have a speaker. the only way to do this the founders intended is have the vote tomorrow. we've set it for 12:00. i feel real good about it. >> will you have more than one ballot -- >> we're going to elect a speaker tomorrow. that's what i think is going to happen. >> all right. joining me now is idaho republican russ fuller. are you supporting jordan? will we see more than one round? >> i think we will see more than one round and -- but from the indication of what congressman jordan said, he is prepared to make sure that by tomorrow night we have a speaker, and so if i understand correctly, we still have enough that would prevent that on round one, so i'm going to project we will have multiple rounds. >> why is he taking this to the floor if he doesn't have the votes yet? >> well, it's one thing to have a secret ballot in conference. it's another thing to have a live vote in front of the world. and so everyone will need to stand up, do a roll call vote and then we know for sure exactly where everyone is. it's also more difficult as a republican to vote no. i think that's one of the reasons why congressman jordan is pursuing this path. >> so i mean it sounds like we're headed for another chaotic, i think i'm being generous with that adjective, process like we saw with kevin mccarthy being elected speaker. he ultimately won. no guarantee that happens with jordan. would you say that's fair, we're headed for a chaotic process like that? >> i think so. you need to understand the root of the issue at least in my opinion on why this is coming around and we all know there's a philosophical divide between republicans and modern day democrats with their agenda and their thought process. the same carries over to leadership. by our very nature, republicans tend to be independent. we tend to be more self-sufficient and more pro liberty minded and all that. t modern day democrat is more compliant, suited to government situations and even to leadership. i am not surprised that you see conflict when there is republican leadership at bay. we're all kind of independent and that's how this plays out. one of the reasons you see the flaikts you -- conflict that you do with the republicans. >> i hear what you're saying. there's a difference between being a big tent party and a circus tent party. are you worried about how this makes america look chaotic and weak on the world stage? >> not just am i worried about it but there's urgency as your story pointed out. the situation in israel, we have our open southern border which i believe greatly puts americans at risk because we don't know who is coming in. we have the inflation issues and we have appropriations. we have to get our act together. i think that's going to happen tomorrow night. it's not going to be pretty, preyanna, but i think we will g -- brianna, but i think we'll get it done. making it a sausage and you're seeing it play out right here. >> we certainly are. the senate you mentioned, the senate is back this week. majority leader schumer, and he mcconnell favor passing israel and ukraine legislation together. is that dead on arrival in a jordan led house? >> i believe so. there are two unique circumstances with israel. we have a memorandum of understanding with the defense package that's been there for decades. we've got a very established democracy in that middle east. with ukraine, totally different situation. we've already sent $113 billion, i believe, to them. there is a -- there always has been questions about how democratic their government is. totally different situation that needs to be carried out and evaluated on their own merits independently. >> i also want to ask you, mike rogers, obviously, a key republican, who flipped to support jordan over the weekend, said they had a couple conversations and they agreed on the need for congress to pass a strong defense authorization bill, appropriations to fund our government's vital functions and other important legislation like the farm bill. should we take that to mean that jordan is assuring moderate republicans that he is not going to let the government shut down next month? >> yes. if you look at the continuing resolution that congressman jordan supported and that i did too, the mandatory spending was held intact. you had your social security, medicare, defense, that was all held intact. veterans spending was untouched. the cuts came in our areas. it came across the other bureaucracies and agencies. by the conversation with mr. rodgers, i think you got an indication where a speaker jordan would be, and that's going to prioritize -- >> i asked about the shutdown. i asked about the shutdown. is he assuring moderates he will not let the government shut down next month? that is not what you're saying there? >> i don't think so either. i think that shut down is going to be on the table. face it, we are a very thinly led majority in the house of representatives, versus a majority in the senate, and, of course, in the white house, on the opposing party with an opposing agenda. i think that shut down is going to remain on the agenda. >> congressman fullcher, thank you so much for being with us. >> thank you. israeli defense forces took cnn's anderson cooper to visit the site of the nova music festival massacre. we have his report from there next. nice footwork. man, you're lucky, watching live sports never used to be this easy. now you can stream all your games like it's nothing. yes! [ cheers ] yeah! woho! running up and down that field looks tough. it's a pitch. get way more into what you're into when you stream on the xfinity 10g network. we continue to learn new details about exactly what happened during the terror attacks here in israel on october 7th. in particular, what happened at the super nova music festival which was the single deadliest attack that day, more than 260 partygoers and others were killed there by hamas gunmen. here is some of what we now know happened there, and we want to warn you, some of what you will see and hear is disturbing. >> the music was playing, the dance floor packed, when the rockets began. just 3.3 miles from the border with gaza, it didn't take long before hamas gunmen arrived. some partygoers were able to get to their cars, but many were killed before they could get away. >> they were here with a minnesota gun. >> reporter: the rear admiral, a soldier all his life has never seen anything like it. >> this is a massacre scene. i don't have any other recall of memory in the history of israel, since it was established, of this kind of event. >> reporter: the bodies and body parts of the dead have been removed, but people's possessions are strewn all around. the carnage is clear, burned out cars, bullet holes, blood stains on seats. from some cars the idf has retrieved dash cam videos that show hamas gunmen roaming the site for hours, shooting freely. this one shows a bloodied hostage being led away and under the car you can see another man hiding. he moves slightly, then stops, a gunman runs right up to him and shoots him point-blank in the head or upper body. >> i don't know how people can explain this. i cannot -- i don't have the words to explain it and then running away with -- on motorcycles, with girls together. >> reporter: fleeing east across open fields was the only way out for many, but they were easy targets. others sought safety in nearby bomb shelters. this is dash cam video of a hamas gunman toss ago grenade into a shelter when a man runs out trying to escape they fire on him repeatedly. in another shelter a few miles north of the festival site about 30 people tried to hide. a man named noem cowan recorded inside. you can hear the panic in their voices asking what's going on, are there israeli soldiers nearby? we aren't going to show you what happened next. cowan says hamas gunmen repeatedly tossed grenades into the shelter, people inside were blown apart. it's one of the most gruesome videos we have ever seen. this is some of the aftermath. noem cowan survived hiding under body parts, that's him terrified but alive. we found the shelter in the town of ala mean yesterday even. nothing could hide the smell as you entered. my cameraman who has experienced a lot of war began to wretch and had to step outside. there's bloody handprints on the wall, there's blood smeared on the walls. you can see probably these are either bullet holes or from the grenades that were thrown in here. >> reporter: body parts have already been collected from here but blood-soaked clothes and shoes remain. >> this looks to be a bloody hand print. this shelter is no more than 15 feet long, maybe 5.5, 6 feet wide. the idea of so many people packed in here, standing shoulder to shoulder, terrified, screaming, it's incredible that anybody was able to survive. >> reporter: there are other shelters like this, other tragedies still to be discovered. the full horror of what happened here is just starting to come to light.
