[ sirens ] >> reporter: this is what running for your wife looks like in gaza. [ screaming ] an ambulance with a young woman and a young girl inside rocked with explosions as they attempt to flee. it is unclear what happened to the pair, but they are among the tens of thousands of people on the move after israel's military called on nearly half of gaza's population to get south in a matter of hours. but along the safe passages, specified by the idf, utter horror. you are looking at the carnage and chaos on the street, one of the designated evacuation groups. in the aftermath of explosions families killed amid their belongings. cnn has a geo-located this video and four other clips from the horrifying scene. that you and calls israel's evacuation advisory impossible and a violation of the rules of war. palestinian officials accused the idf of bombing civilians even as they fled. thousands of evacuees were killed or wounded by israeli airstrikes according to hamas. cnn has reached out to israeli military for comment. did they fire rockets? my niece and her whole family are dead. the only survivor is a two-year-old girl. the healthcare system is on the brink, complete siege making it impossible to get aid to the enclave and there's a shortage of everything, even space in the morgue. we are keeping the dead in ice cream trucks so the bodies don't rot, this doctor says. gaza is in crisis. gaza needs help. for those still able to move south, this is one of the neighborhoods families are expected to flee towards. where israeli airstrikes have wreaked havoc. this is a jenna side, not a war. it is genocide. finding refuge is proving dangerous and deadly and for their many families desperate for shelter, the fear is there may be no safe places left. cnn, london. >> covering all the details from london. elliott, good to have you with us. we know israel is carrying out raids. they continued to strike gaza in retaliation for the hamas terror attack. what more can you tell us about the next stage of the more? >> reporter: israel carrying out more than 100 strikes on everything from rocket launchers, antitank launchers to headquarters belonging to hamas and also the other militant group and also targeting specific militants. a.c.t. -- they took out one of the commandos from the elite forces as well overnight. in terms of ground invasion, we have been talking about this, of course, ever since hamas launched that deadly and brutal terrorist attack on israel killing more than 1300 people just over a week ago. we have been talking about that is ground invasion being likely. it has always been a question of when rather then if. it seems to be a minute and that is one reason why israel has been asking these guys and civilians to evacuate from the northern part of the gaza strip specifically gaza city to the south so that they can get out of harm's way and minimize civilian casualties. as we saw, there were some civilian casualties on friday afternoon as people were trying to evacuate. it is unclear is precisely where that strike would have come from. apparently experience say it was an israeli airstrike. we heard the spokesman speaking with you saying that the israeli air force was not striking at the time and it was not responsible for those tests. but clearly as we see the death toll rises in the gaza strip, more than 2,000 now, the feeling, the expectation is that could rise significantly as when that takes place. >> lynda: and we know the u.s. is sending another aircraft carrier, another one and fighter jets to the region. explain what role the u.s. could play in this conflict? >> reporter: that u.s. has said that it does not want to be involved specifically in the conflict. but the somewhat rare addition of another aircraft carrier to the eastern mediterranean really i think is designed to deter iran and of course its proxy in southern lebanon has blocked from getting directly involved. we have already seen some scrimmages, rockets fired from hezbollah in southern lebanon. israel retaliating. we have seen rockets fired from syria a and we reports that a syria's airports have been hit, thos be off in a conduit for weapons to the iranian backed militia of has blood as well. so every danger that there could be a northern front opening according to israeli national security minister, excuse me, the head of national security council of the threshold in their awards for an escalation has yet to be met. there are concerns that that could escalate, that in the other friend could open up for real. express in the north and at the same time, we are seeing violence rising in the israeli occupied west bank as well. so israel can of fighting on all those three friends, things could get worse and at the same time, there's this information war going on and the court of public opinion and one has seen over the past week progressively the more or less steadfast backing that israel was receiving initially kind of shifting as the civilian death toll in the gaza strip rises and it would not be a surprise to start seeing things like condemnations from the united nations coming through as well. that is expected by israel in contrast to previous conflicts and perhaps with militants inside the gaza strip. i think israel is much less concerned about the objects going on. lynda? >> good to have you with us. thank you. israel has assembled a considerable force along its northern border. watching for any incursions by militia in lebanon. cnn's matthew chance caught up with a commander to discuss their mission and what the troops are feeling. >> reporter: what is the objective right here in northern israel?
