united states and around the world. i'm bianca nobilo. max foster is off today. just ahead -- >> it is a tragedy beyond any expectation. but we are buoyed by the fact that the world has tried to lift us up and help us through this. >> mark meadows was not just setting up meetings. he was not arranging telephone calls. that is done by secretaries, staffers, white house operators. he is in the thick of this. >> i think the u.s. government probably has pretty good idea of what the kremlin wants and it is a question of whether they can make that concession. live from london, this is "cnn newsroom" with max foster and bianca nobilo. >> it is thursday, august 17, 10:00 p.m. in maui where at least 111 people are confirmed dead a little more than a week after devastating wildfires swept through the island and the hawaiian governor says some of the victims are children. not yet clear how many or if they have been identified. but we're told more than 1,000 people could still be missing and only 38% of the disaster zone has been searched. gloria pazmino has this report from maui. >> reporter: scope of the devastation stands in stark contrast to maui's beauty. >> looks like it started up there and ended down there. >> reporter: frank taylor with fema found lahaina reduced to ashes and now a graveyard for everything caught in its path. >> cremation basically. this is the absolute worst disaster i've ever seen. >> reporter: more than 100 dead, now search teams face the grisly task of finding many more in the days to come. using dogs, trained to locate cadavers in this restricted zone. >> they are absolutely essential to this and they are trained just for human remains. >> we can walk through and do visual searches. but you send a dog in there, and they will find them. i'm confident that we'll find everybody. >> reporter: main roads are just starting to open here. fema is providing disaster relief and families hoping to lay the victims to rest are fighting exhaustion amid their grief. >> i just want to identify the body. police have really helped. but a lot of people i understand are tired. i'm tired too. i haven't slept in six days. >> reporter: for some survivors, not knowing how the deadly fire started and how it was able to cause so much destruction so quickly adds to their suffering. a siren warning system that never sounded despite being tested just days before the fire's raged. >> cellphones were immobilized, power lines were down. and we had no service. but the sirens, some were broken and we're investigating that. >> reporter: and some locals point to downed power lines and loss of water pressure as the flames ravaged the landscape. one local hawaii reporter says he finds solace in the close knit community of lahaina after losing at least four members of his extended family. >> the people of hawaii have always been rooted in the spirit of owe hhana, which is family. and i know the hurt, and just the deep void we all feel. >> reporter: poz paz mina, cnn. and republicans have criticized job for now focusing on the tragedy but president biden says he didn't want his presence to be a distraction. but the hawaiian governor said that by next week that shouldn't be a problem. >> we're honored to have the president come monday to both mourn with us and also so that he can see the damage, see what it will take to rebuild maui. >> tourists are being told to stay away from maui for the immediate future. hawaiian actor posted this message from a local community group urging vacationers to stop traveling to maui. go home, it says. people have lost everything. visitors to the island have dropped sharply since last weekend, but some vacationers remain and that has been deeply offensive to many residents as they cope with the aftermath and grief. tourism officials say hotels in west maui have stopped accepting bookings for the time being because those rooms need for evacuees and emergency workers. if you would like more information on how to help those impacted, please go to cnn.com/impact. or text hawaii to 707070 to donate. in texas is woman is charged with threatening the judge presiding over president trump's federal election case. he left a voice mail threatening to kill the judge if trump is not elected next year. this is amid developments in the georgia election sub version case. the district attorney who handed trump a fourth indictment has asked a judge for a trial date of march 4 next year. that is the day before super tuesday, a critical date in the u.s. primary season. cnn's paula reid on why starting the trial that soon could be district. >> reporter: fani willis just making a request, a proposal to have her trial begin the first week of march 2024. it is highly unlikely that this request is going to be granted because six months is a very tight time line for a rico case. they are complated and get drawn out and here, she has 19 different defendants, three of them expected or have already challenged the jurisdiction trying to move the case from the state to the federal level. but we know she's also competing for increasingly scarce space on an increasgly crowded calendar where the president has not only likely a few trials that have been scheduled, but also he has election events, things that he would likely have to participate in as a candidate for the presidency. so likely part of why she wants to get the discussion going and why she's proposing such an aggressive time line. paula reid, cnn, washington. one of trump's co-defendants is his former chief of staff mark meadows who is now securing a hearing date with a federal judge in less than two weeks. he wants his case moved to federal court arguing that he should have federal immunity as a former government u.s. employee. it is likely that other defendants in the georgia case will try the same tactic. meadows says he will submit an argument why his charges will be dismissed all together. u.s. citizen held prisoner in russia has been told to keep hope alive. sources tell us that message came in a phone call between paul whelan and u.s. secretary of state antony blinken on wednesday. whelan has been in prison for more than four years and his family is becoming increasingly concerned he may not be freed anytime soon. kylie atwood reports. >> reporter: paul whelan spoke by phone today with the secretary of state antony blinken from a russian prison. and according to a source familiar with the call, the secretary's message to paul whelan was to keep the faith and that the u.s. government is doing everything in their power to try to bring paul whelan who has been wrongfully detained for more than four years home as quickly as possible. now, we're told that this is the second time they have had a conversation, first time was late last year, but we don't know the logistics that went to standing up this call. you can imagine it would be quite complicated to get mall whelan on the phone with the secretary of state even though he's able to make phone calls from the prison where he is, getting him on the phone with america's top diplomat is hugely significant. now, david whelan, who is paul whelan's brother, described the conversation to cnn as a long conversation, a frank conversation. he also said that it sent a signal to russia that the u.s. is still working of course to secure paul whelan's release and we should note that the u.s. has pults an offer on the table to secure whelan's release. that offer to russia was sent earlier this year more than eight months ago. and that is still a live offer, but the russians have not substantively engaged as the u.s. continue to get paul whelan and he haven gershovich back to the united states. russia's ambassador to the u.s. later released a statement call willing on everyone who is not involved in the issue to stay out of it. he wrote we urge american politicians and media to give the competent authorities of the two countries the opportunity to work calmly. stop playing with people's fates and leave the search for the necessary resolutions to professionals. still to do, a report on how a army and rsf rages on. 30 mass graves with the remains of more than 1,000 people have been discovered in west darfur according to local officials. in a cnn exclusive, they pieced together a video that ended with bodies littering the streets and eventually being buried in the mass graves. we want to warn you of course some of the images are fwrask and the report includes distressing descriptions of conflict. >> reporter: streets in the darfur region are ererily quite. filmed at great risk by survivors. the video shows racist graffiti defacing walls and corporases i the streets. after heavily shelling campaign. a cnn investigation has now uncovered some of the costs of the rsf victory here. survivors, aid workers and body collectors describe to cnn how together with their allies the rsf gunned down hundreds of civilians on june 15 in one of the most violent massacres to date in the recent history of this genocide-scarred sudanese region. using satellite images, eyewitness testimony and geolocating what few videos have made it through the telecommunications blackout cutting darfur off from the world -- >> translator: i lost eight members of my family that day during the escape. >> reporter: this man says he buried hundreds of victims in darfur since april. but that gay, he couldn't even reach his slain relatives. the rsf troops are drawn from arab tribes and together with its leader are implicated in the years long again side in the region against african tribal groupings. it is unsurprising then that the warring for control of the country took an even more sinister turn here in darfur mere reporting the rsf previous tactics, forcing civilians to flee, many arriving here in this town. that is until june 14th when the west darfur governor seen here at his arrest by the rsf was executed. the rsf blamed for the killing denies responsibility. as hundreds attempted to flee, they were harassed and threatened. even children joined in. a lucky few made it to chad. >> translator: they were going into houses killing people. snipers were everywhere. >> reporter: bringing with them stories of ethnic targeting. >> translator: on the road out of the city, we were stopped and searched. they took our phones. men were separated from the women so that they could kill us. we ran but they shot some of us. >> reporter: evidence shows much of the killing occur here outside the main hospital. and then fleeing civilians were ambushed again. satellite images show the river which is usually shallow enough for cars to cross had water running high that day. scores struggled in the water, some shot as they drowned. survivors say they heard gunfire from all directions. >> translator: i saw 17 kids who were shot dead and then thrown into the water. this was one of the most surreal scenes i've witnessed. >> reporter: even as they fled across the border to chad, our evidence shows men, women and children were shot as they fled. at the msf hospital in chad, survivors arrived with gunshot wounds in the back, legs and buttocks. the lead doctor tells cnn all injuries consistent with being shot from the back. over 850 people flooded the hospital between june 15 to 17 according to msf, more than any other period since fighting began in april. body collectors say according to their count around 1,000 people were killed on the day of june 15th, buried in dozens of mass graves. survivors say the rsf is replicating these same tactics across the region. even as their supporters celebrate in the aftermath of mass killings and sweep of ethnically targeted attacks. a spokesperson for rsf told cnn that they deny the assertions that we've put forward in our reporting without though denying any of the specifics that we shared with them. it is also important to note that the rsf had previously denied the findings of an investigation where we uncovered evidence that rsf troops had engaged in rapes before subsequently the leader of the rsf stating that those who had been implicated in violations were to be prosecuted. one month after russia pulled out of the black sea grain deal with ukraine the first cargo ship to leave odesa has made it to romanian waters en route to turkey. the ship was carrying food products and it transited a temporary corridor for civilian vessels. this as russia continues to launch drone attacks on ukrainian ports which are critical to the global food supply. russian drone strikes in the past 24 hours destroyed warehouses and other agricultural machinery along the t danube river. these ports are vital to export grain. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy says this is the seventh russian attack on a port since the grain deal fell apart. >> translator: each russian strike is a blow to world food prices, a blow to social stability in africa and asia, basic things that provide a normal life to every society is food on the table. no other terrorist in the world apart from russia has ever so intentionally targeted the security of so many nations at once. >> meanwhile ukraine's air force says it is not expecting american-made f-16 fighter jets to be delivered this year. nada bashir is joining me to discuss this. this is a familiar pattern. ukraine asks for something. initially there is a refusal for fears of escalation and then eventually the allies say yes, we'll give it to you, but often so late that it means that meaningful impact is not made on the battlefield sflp and with t. >> and with the counteroffensive, they are not making the progress that they had hoped or the allies would have anticipated. of course this was a controversial decision from the get-go. no date set out for the supply of the u.s. made fighter jets, but president biden has been clear in the endorsement of the training of ukrainian pilots and that seems to be the sticking point. we heard earlier this month from sources familiar with the matter that there seemed to be a holdup with the e uflt plans to go ahead with training ukrainian pilots. this was of course a plan in place in con skrkconjunction wi u.s. we heard the u.s. was waiting for the plan to be finalized before it could go forward. this seems to have caused some delay, although some positive indications from the ukrainian air force that says they are moving forward with plans to perform the training, that it will happen in the near future. but of course the fact that they can't be using these f-16s over the coming autumn and harsh winter months where the counteroffensive could face further stalling on the battlefield, this will be a huge blow to ukraine's air defense ambitions and efforts on the counteroffensive front. >> and you are also learning that money tfor russia will now be going to ukraine. what was the money initially intended for? >> it is a substantial package from the european union. it was initially earmarked for russia and belarus and now it will be heading to ukraine and moldova in response to the war. that is the reason given. they are focusing on local projects. of course we've seen eu funding go to ukraine in the past few months with regard to military aid and relief aid. and that is a primary focus for the european union. but this will focus more so on internal local projects as well as strengthening cooperation between ukraine and the european union. so we're talking about cross border transport links, developing ukraine's health and educational infrastructure as well as that of moldova. so the message being sent is in some ways symbolic, they are strengthening the ties between european union and ukraine not only on the military front but clearly trying to strengthen the ties on a local level as well. >> nada bashir, thank you. as republican candidates prepare for the official death toll has risen to 111. we learned a short time ago that children are among the dead. georgia prosecutors are asking for a march 4, 2024 trial date for former president trump and his 18 co-defendants. they are accused of being part of a criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results in georgia. sobering news for both joe biden and donald trump heading in to the election season. most american voters apparently don't want either of them to run again. the associated press poll found a whopping 75% said no to biden compared to 69% for trump. and there is something else for all trump to consider, one-third of republicans want someone else besides him to be the nominee. eva mckent has more from iowa. >> how many of you love senator scott? >> reporter: everybody is the answer tim scott and his campaign are looking for in iowa. campaigning hand to hand, flip to french fry. but the main political attraction during scott's visit to the famed state fair was news of frontrunner donald trump's fourth criminal indictment. >> ten to stay as i see it, which is that we see the legal system being weaponized against political opponents. that is unamerican. >> reporter: scott attacking the legal process instead of the former president trying to keep his campaign positive. and showing little appetite to take on any candidate even trump despite mounting legal woes. >> trump's lead here insurmountable? >> of course not. that is why i'm campaigning. because i believe my optimistic positive message is being rooted in iowa and frankly our poll numbers continue to go up. >> reporter: that optimism as in iowa ans tell cnn that they are sick of trump. >> i'm considering other people that i think would also do a good job. maybe without some of the conflict that president trump has with all the lawsuits. >> i kind of wish trump would fade to be honest with you. >> reporter: scott and his supporters have blanketed iowa and new hampshire with more than 10 m$10 million. at an event he saw the payoff firsthand. >> i say in my commercials if you take out a loan, you pay it back. hallelujah, this is great. this is good news. i was wondering if they were buying anything with all that money i was spending. >> reporter: in the hawkeye state, a whopping 69% of likely caucusgoers say they have a favorable view of scott. according to a recent poll. his pursuit of momentum will have to carry into next week's debate. a crucial test and opportunity with florida governor ron desantis seeking to reboot his campaign and trump's appearance on the stage very much in doubt, scott is convinced he can compete. >> i'll continue to run this race with one objective, to be the president of the united states. >> reporter: his campaign just releasing this video -- >> you get in the race for president to win. >> what is your campaign strategy to gain momentum between now and the debate? >> good news is we'll continue doing what we've been doing which is to focus on the positive message anchored in conservatism with a backbone. >> reporter: and he could face pointed attacks on the debate stage given his relative momentum. his team tells us he is prepared though engaging in the traditional debate prep. but no matter what happens, the sunny optimism seems to be gaining the attention of some voters. eva mckent, cnn. legal battle over be an abortion pill appears to be going back to the supreme court. they will ask the justices to review an appeals court ruling that says that the mifepristone can stay on the market but there are strict limits to access. jessica schneider has details. >> reporter: right now there is no immediate impact on this fifth circuit court decision because the decision has been preemptively blocked by the supreme court until the justices on that court decide if they will even hear an appeal. so practically mifepristone, this abortion pill, remains widely available. meaning it can still be prescribed by a nonphysician. you don't need to go to your doctor's office to get the prescription, it be done by telehealth, by mail and up to ten weeks pregnant. but this decision wednesday by a conservative federal appeals court says all of those rules put into effect between 2016 and 2022, the court saying they should be blocked, that ease of access should be rolled back. and this is significant because this is the second conservative court to rule this way. so it is possible that when this this does get to the supreme court, the doj has said that they would appeal, we could see a similar ruling given that the conservative makeup of this nation's highest court has already made some major decisions including overturning roe v. wade which eliminated the constitutional right to abortion. but even though the fifth circuit said the recent rules making it easier to get mifepristone should be blocked, nothing the lower courts decide at this point will actually take effect until the supreme court decides whether to step in. so the takeaway is that for now, mifepristone will remain on the market, it will remain widely and easily available. even though the lower courts are consistently ruling against certain aspects of accessing this drug. jessica schneider, cnn, washington. more younger adults in the u.s. are finding that they have cancer especially women. a nestudy shows the cancer diagnosis rate among americans below age 50 went up between 2010 and 2019.that was largely spike among women and people in their 30s. the increase was the highest among native americans as well as asians and hispanics. data from other countralso shows an increase of cancers among unadults. scientists attributed it to better screenings and other factors that they have yet to investigate. the study published in the journal jama network open. at least three people have died in the northeastern u.s. after contracting infections from a flesh eating bacteria. two people in connecticut were infected after swimming in the long island sound and new york's governor says the bacteria was detected in a person who died on long island. all the victims fell ill from a bacteria that lives naturally in warm salty water. people can catch it by swimming with open wounds or by eating raw or undercooked shellfish. it has been a brutally hot summer in the united states and it is not over yet. this week much of the u.s. will be blanketed in a miserable heatwave once again. jennifer gray tells us what to expect and when relief may be in sight. >> heat advisories are up for the west coast and pacific northwest yet again. we have just incredible heat building and you can see it is even extending into portions of central california. and so we'll be dealing with triple digit heat for some areas. spokane, 100 degrees for today. normal high of 84. hitting 100 in sacramento, that is almost ten degrees above normal. but you see that temperatures start to cool a bit. it will be back to 85 on saturday in spokane. seattle back to norm willing a everybody below normal on friday. and so temperatures will start to pack down. in texas we could see incredibly hot temperatures, some of the warmest so far. we're looking at temperatures at 108 in dallas. 103 in houston, 104 in midland. those are the highs on thursday, 108 in dallas. feeling like the triple digits all across the deep south and the gulf coast. so another very hot and humid day. so temperatures will hit 109 in dallas friday hitting 109 in del rio, temperatures close to 104 in monroe. and temperatures will stay above average and then even building to above average temperatures across the northern plains, midwest and really the entire east aside from some areas in northern new england, below normal temperatures for the west. so temperature outlook for next week, it looks like hardly anyone will be able to escape the heat. we'll see a small pocket across portions of the southwest as well as the northeast. but we're looking at a very hot week or above normal week i should say for the vast majority of the u.s. here is the forecast radar. you saw the storms just sweeping by. we have a chance of showers and storms. the next two days anywhere from an inch or two of rain across the midwest and that will work its way into the northeast and new england. still to come, the death toll is still rising after heavy rain led to deadly landslides in india causing roads to cave in and buildings to collapse. a live report from new delhi is next. wow, you get to watch all your favorite stuff. it's to die for. digging through the debris after deadly landslides in northern india. at least 71 people are dead and 13 missing after torrential rain led to flash floods and landslides in the region. vedika sud is following the developments for us. what is the scale of this rescue effort and how has the reaction been in the region to this devastating event? >> reporter: the scale has been massive given chief minister has said that 300 people have died since the beginning of the monsoon season which commenced in the third week of june this year. but in the last four days especially between sunday and wednesday according to officials, there have been 71 deaths. so we are talking about 71 deaths recorded in about 72 hours or just more than that which in itself is a staggering figure isn't it. if you look at these visuals, these are strong and they come from where land slides have led to the loss of property and lives. we know over a dozen people still remain missing. unfortunately, the data a could be going up. what has triggered the land slides is the heavy rainfall and unfortunately that will continue the next four days. but there are so many people waiting there to hear of news of their loved ones, those still missing over a dozen like i mentioned. here is one of them just hoping for some closure if not the good news. >> translator: we should get the missing members of our family back. we should get a glimpse of them for the last time and set their souls free. we have no doors left open for us now. we should get them back. >> reporter: connect different has been impacted and that will take a while to restore. of course climate experts say this is related to climate change because of the f regions. many homes have collapsed as you can see in those visuals. now, according to the chief minister, and i'll quote him from a tweet, we have received wounds that will never be forgotten. so this is one of the worst perhaps he has seen and it will take a while not only to rebuild the properties that have been lost but these lives as well, which may take months or years. back to you. >> vedika sud, thank you. residents in a large canadian city are under evacuation orders after wildfires. 20,000 people in yellow knife have been told to get out by noon friday. more than 200 fires are burning across their northwest territories. this surreal image is from ft. mcmurray ravaged by another wildfire in 2016. the flames this week turned the sky red. officials say they are trying to deploy more resources to the region and canadian prime minister justin trudeau says canada's military has been called in to help. and wildfires are also raging on a spanish fire spreading to 1800 hectares in 24 hours. and because of steep ravines, it is hard to battle them. authorities have ordered evacuation of five villages in the area. defense chiefs from the west african block ecowas are set to gather in the next hour to discuss the coup in niger. the meeting will be similar to the extraordinary summit held in nigeria's capital a week ago. ecowas has placed sanctions on niger and has threatened military action to restore democracy. stephanie busari is joining me with the latest. fair to say that the reaction of ecowas has come in fits and starts. remind us of the vested interests that ecowas have in niger and whether or not that will compel them to really act and make a difference in the coming weeks. >> reporter: so, bianca, i mean, ecowas is sort of caught between a rock and a hard place. this is a regional body, economic community of west african states. 15 members of this body. and they have seen coup after coup happening in the region. and for them niger which is a very strategic large country, about twice the size of texas, and a very key ally in the fight against terrorism, for them it is one coup too many and they want to be seen to act and to really take a firm stand and there was a threat very early on, an ultimatum about restoring democracy in seven days and military action was planned. but some say that they showed their hand too early and the planned action didn't happen which may have emboldened the junta. ecowas is keen to avoid a costly war. some of the poorest countries in the world are in this region. it is plagued with insurgency which niger was a key ally in that fight. so it is not an easy decision to take military action, to put boots on the ground in a country like this, a region that could lead to protracted civil war. in nigeria for example which the president sununu is head of ecowas right now, northern part of nigeria is very close for niger. long ethnic ties. and they say any war on niger is a war against our brothers. we don't want it. so ecowas really has to pursue dialogue until the very last moment. and that is what they are doing. but they are clear that it may happen, this meeting of the defense chiefs later on today is to put a deployment plan into place. and it is very likely that we'll see military action in niger in the coming days perhaps weeks. >> stephanie busari, thank you so much. i think that context and that knowledge of your is so valuable to try to understand what is at stake here and also extremely professional job battling through the disco lighting that you've got going on now. thank you very much. an ominous warning from south korea spy
