and a new video showing an opponent was shot on the campaign trail. i'm kate bolduan with john berman, and this is cnn "news central." we are getting new information from the ground in maui where 36 people have been killed from the wildfires there. and the fear is that the number will rise now that we are seeing the scope of this wildfire. one neighborhood is burned to the ground in seconds. one man says that everyone he knows is now homeless. >> our neighbor's yard was on fire. the smoke was killing their house, and we had no choice but to evacuate. we had no time to grab anything. we lost our kitten in the process of evacuating, and honestly, we are grateful to my brother who returned to retrieve and item for my grandmother. everyone that i know and love and communicate with, colleagues, friends, family, we are homeless. thousands of people are homeless in wthe area. >> if anybody is out here, it is time to go. the fire is here. >> the winds came, and the gas station blew up, and everything caught fire by the brush, and we had to evacuate. >> the bodies are floating next to the seawall, and they have been there since last night, and they have been here since last night, and we are trying to save people's lives. this is a nationwide issue at this point. we need help. a lot of help. >> some 11,000 people have evacuated by plane so far, and all of the inbound flights from american and delta are canceled. most people have gone to oahu and staying at a makeshift shelter at the convention center. that is where mike valera is, and what are you seeing and hearing of the tales of the evacuation? >> well, john, you know, we have been here since midnight, and so it is after 5:00 a.m. here in the heart of honolulu, and as soon as people can get off of maui on a plane here to oahu, this is the main destination, so bus after bus with a dozen people in each bus come off and expressions of people just shell shocked, exhaustion, and expressions of people who are utterly disconsulate of just, if you can imagine just narrowly escaping the inferno, and then trying to get off of mmaui's mainland, and then make your way to the area with a cot to cool off. a couple of feet from us, the convention center is prepared to handle about 2,000 people, but john, when we are here, and we are just speaking with the first responders and people who are, you know, part of the red cross community, they say that this gigantic convention center is prepared to handle hurricanes, tropical storms, and you know, perhaps tsunami events, and this is all within the realm of possibility. but wildfires with three intense infernos burning at the same time 80 miles away from here, and this being a safe haven from that, that is not in the playbook first responders telling us of what we are supposed to deal with. they are trying to console people who have survived the disaster as best they can while trying to grapple with what they are witnessing so far. >> it is traumatic on so many different levels. mike valerio, thank you for keeping us posted. and joining us is fema administrator deanna criswell, and thank you for joining us. the latest update is 36 people, 36 lives lost on the island from the deadly wildfires and any information that the death toll has risen? >> john, thank you for the opportunity to join you today. i want to start by expressing my deepest sympathies by anyone who has been impacted by this tragic fire. i know that when i spoke with the lieutenant government, and she had said it was 6, and when we got up this morning, we saw that it had increased, and i have concerns of what i think of what it will be, but we have been coordinating with the state of the initial response and there to support the recovery efforts. >> you have people on the ground as you said, and what are they seeing in terms of the scope of the destruction? >> what we are seeing is widespread devastation across many neighborhoods on maui, and we have an office in oahu and so we had staff there, and senior leader was there for another meeting, and instantly could embed to hear the tragic impacts that the communities are going to be moving. so we, and also, we have opened up the logistics center there on oahu for up to 5,000 people for ten day, and we have immediately pushed in the resources for the tragic widespread impact that this fire is having. >> you know, i am not sure that i have seen the pictures like this of what we have seen in hawaii and you have seen these populated pictures from downtown areas that have been largely burnt to the ground, and what unique challenges does it pose to you now? >> the devastation is going to bring devastation like we saw in boulder, colorado, in the end of 2021 when the entire community was burned to the ground spread by excessive winds like this fire, and the challenges that we are going to face is that it is limited in the ability to where we can put people, because it is isolated as an alibi, and we will to bring in to help this community in the interim recovery, and more importantly in the long-term recovery. >> what estimates do you have in term of the number of people displaced? >> when i talked to the lieutenant governor she said 2100 people in the shelter, but it is not representative of the total number of people displaced, because many are staying with friends and family. one of the things that i will be traveling out there probably tomorrow, so i can get eyes on and talk to the people, and hear what the impacts are, and make sure that we are bringing the right resources to help the community. right now the estimates are thousands of people have been displaced by this event. >> as you said, you have resources on the ground already, and it is a unique situation, and not that easy to get to in a remote island. deanne criswell, thank you. >> it is important to hear from the administrator right now. and others said it is going to be taking years to recover. we heard from one business owner who says that she is simply in shock from what she sees. >> it looks like a bomb went off. there is nothing left. the entire village has been turned into rubble. it is a devastating sight to see. >> joining us right now is another maui resident, lafena davis, and you told my producer that your home is among those that has been lost in the fire. how are you doinging? >> you know, it has been a long couple of days. i'm exhausted. i have been able to rest a little bit. it is 5:00 a.m. when we vac waited late yesterday. so, yeah, it is an extremely traumatic experience, and there's a lot of, a lot of emotion and trauma that is going to have to be dealt with for the whole community. >> yeah, you are with family now, and how is your family? >> i am temporarily with my family, but we had to split up, and we had animals to house, so, yeah, we are shooken up. and we are just kind of feeling like we are in limbo and little bit numb. >> that is understandable. from, far, far away here in new york looking at them images of what we are seeing coming out of lahaina coming to the ground. i keep hearing people talk about how fast it happened. can you talk me through what happened to you? >> absolutely. so we live off of the front street, and the street was completely impacted and leveled. there is absolutely nothing left of our neighborhood. but i could see the neighborhood from my bedroom, and at 4:00 p.m., i got a text message from my daughter in the mountainside of lahaina said that she could see the mountainside, and never in a million years did i think that it would reach our home, but by 5:00, it was already from the mountain to the ocean, and it was such a thick black smoke, that we immediately just left our homes. we barely grabbed anything. i did not grab any clothes. i grabbed important papers, but everything in my 50 years of life is gone. we have extended family. we have grandparents and great grandparents living in that home, and we are displaced and homeless, and one home of hundreds of people in that situation. >> you are living right off of front street i am quickly learning, and there is really nothing left. the lieutenant governor said just last night that it will be years to recover, and what does that mean for you and your family, la phena? >> it is not just the loss of the home, but it is the loss of our entire community, and the town that we have known it to be for generations. it is completely devastating, and we are shook to our core, and it is not something that anybody can wrap any thoughts or real emotions around it right now. there is going to have to be a lot of processing and unraveling from this experience, but in this situation, we are only focusing on survival. you know, food, shelter, gasoline, and some of our family could not evacuate, because they had no gasoline. so some had to leave their animals, too, and so it is devastation. and to think about three days, and let alone three years from now, it is a stretch. i would say immediate help to that area for the people who are still there is crucial. >> la phena, i am so sorry that we are meeting under these circumstance, and what is it going to be like in the next few hours as the sun is coming up is about as far forward as you can think in this moment. thank you for spending time with us, and i'm very sorry for your loss. >> thank you. >> john?
