atlanta with the new indictment against donald trump possibly coming out of georgia at any minute. is a the deadline approaches in the january 6th federal case against the former president. it could give us a signal of where exactly that case is headed. the foiled assassination attempt on ukraine's president. had, but we learned about the plot and the russian woman allegedly at the center of it all. the ntsb investigating after two firefighting helicopters collided in california, killing three people. what went wrong here? we're following these major developing stories and many more, all coming in right here to cnn news central. ♪ it's legal deadline day here in d.c. former president trump's defense lawyers have a few more hours to respond to a special counsel filing. prosecutors asked the court to place restrictions on what trump can do with aunt say about certain evidence in the election interference case. trump's lawyer suppose it could have until 5:00 p.m. eastern time to respond, but today, the client continues lashing out against the judge and the special counsel on social media. that, a key reason for the prosecution's request in the first place. so, is there a concern here that donald trump will share evidence that should not be shared publicly? >> here is concerned there, yes, of course. that's what the justice department is of anything in this filing, but the deadline today, it's the first of many deadlines in the case, what had to be worked out is how this case moved to trial, how do prosecutors get to share information with the defense. they need to turn over this evidence, very typical in a criminal case. very typical that they have some sort of framework around that evidence so that there isn't any chilling effect on witnesses that might testify in trial or anything that would spoil the trial for a jury, so the justice department wants the provision in place, and they are saying trump's team is standing in the way. they can't make an agreement, so they made a filing friday night, raising this idea that donald trump was putting things out on social media saying he was going to come after people and saying, asking the judge, we need to start moving on this so we can get them evidence and get to trial, so the judge came back very quickly, setting this deadline today, demanding a response from trump's team to try and get things moving so they can see evidence. >> that presumes the judge wants to make a quick decision on this and some rules. the judge and trump's other ongoing case right now, that in florida, the classified documents case. that judge, a trump appointee, is asking an interesting question that's getting a lot of reaction about whether a d.c. grand jury can lead to an indictment in florida. explain a concern with what the judge's potential power is. >> this judge, she can ask for arguing the law on both sides, and that appears to be what she's doing right now. she's a relatively new judge, and she is asking for something a lot of legal commentators would step back and say, this is typical. you can investigate anywhere where something took place but she is asking for is a little bit more legal explanation about why there's been grand jury activity around the obstruction part of the mar-a- lago documents probe in washington, d.c. and not just in the southern district of florida, where she sits, where this case is charged. there is a deadline set on that, and it's all coming together because there are bigger questions about whether a lawyer for one of the defendants charged in florida, whether he's able to keep representing other people who may be witnesses in that case. >> there are a lot of steps in a trial, particularly a trial like this one. in georgia, security is tightening around this atlanta courthouse. starting today, a normally busy street in front of the courthouse is closed, as the fulton county da is milling indictments of the 2020 in election of interference probe. it could be coming at anytime. along with street closures, officials have set up security barriers outside of the courthouse, and the court is telling anyone with these court dates through august 18 to expect to make their appearance is virtually rather than in person. cnn's nick valencia is live outside the courthouse. i assume you are seeing a lot less than you normally would there, nick ? >> reporter: a lot more in some cases. these barricades when you're a couple weeks ago when we were outside reporting, let me get out of the way to show you these ramped up security preparations. these metal barricades, they are new as of today that shut down prior street, that street in front of the courthouse. it's one of the roads closed around the fulton county courthouse. they joined the plastic barricades, some of which i could am told are filled with water to make them harder to move. the street is open to foot traffic, but only media cars are allowed in and out of your. part of the process and reason for these ramped up security operations have to do with the countless threats received by fulton county district attorney fani willi s, and she started this investigation over a year ago. she has received countless threats, some of them credible, so much that she has spoken about it publicly and talked about how she's needed to make changes to her own personal security detail. of course, the rhetoric from the former president has not helped things that'll. called fani willis a racist. he's referred to this investigation is politically motivated , and we saw one person last week parroting the former president, saying this was politically motivated. he was out here with a big trump flag and a bullhorn. it's one of the changes of scenes we have seen out here since this investigation started, and it's one of several indications this sprawling investigation, which includes potentially conspiracy and racketeering charges, could be coming to an end there's also a letter that's been given by fani willis to local law enforcement agencies to prepare for the potential of indictment did you remember the special purpose grand jury which had subpoena power, they saw more than 75 witnesses and handed over there charging recommendations to willis back in february. currently, there are two grand jury seeded here, and it's one of those two grand jury that's going to be given those charging recommendations and evidence, and they will be tasked with hearing evidence against the former president as well as some of his republican allies. 24 jurors altogether on each of those juries plus to alternates. 16 will be needed for cuaron, and it will take 12 of them to be an agreement in order for an indictment to be handed down in which as we are reporting, could come any day. >> less traffic, and way more security where you are. nick valencia live in atlanta, thank you. what to look for in the coming days. norm, as we watch for the a decision out of fulton county in georgia, the special counsel took a certain approach to indicting the former president based on his activities, attempts to overturn the election. based on what you know, questions asked, witnesses called, how do you expect the charges in fulton county to differ from the ones the special counsel pursued? >> jim, the special counsel has a laser light focus on donald trump because he wants to get his case to trial, and he wants to do that fast so that voters can be informed about the nature of the leading contender for one of our major political parties to take an office to defend a democracy that he's alleged to have attacked. fani willis will probably let the special counsel vote first, so she has the luxury of charging multiple defendants, all indications are that she's going to do that with reports that the special grand jury recommended charges against over a dozen, and it's good to have that broad perspective from another prosecutor. something else she is likely to do, focus on georgia. jack smith had a national focus , one nationwide defendants, so i'm expecting a broader case and want focusing on the state of georgia. >> listen, there are a lot of steps to these, but when we look to the special counsel's case at this point, the filing defense lawyers have to respond to today deals with how do you protect, against the former president from revealing in his public comments and social media posts , evidence that is shared from the prosecution of the defense in what is called discovery, some of which is sensitive in this case? what does the judge consider with a decision like this, and what is a judge's power to keep that kind of evidence from getting out there? >> jim, the judge does have broad powers to do what we call a protective order that limits distribution of the evidence. she balances the first amendment rights and the need of the defendant to participate in the investigation of the case. with harms that could upset the administration of justice and the administration of this trial. for example, if donald trump get a document with witnesses and then is going to be publicly threatening those witnesses, that could interfere with the trials, so those are the kinds of balancing of rights, and its routine to protect this kind of information . she is surely going to do that. >> let me ask you a question here because this is a former president who, while president and since he has been president, does not always follow norms, right, as we know. there is a possibility that he out right divides the judge's order on something like this, and he lets it play out in court. i'm going to pursue this in court and go to supreme court. what actual power does a judge have? has that possibility been considered, and what do you do about it? >> part of the reason you have an order and you give notice to the parties is because the judge can impose penalties that stems both from the order and the conditions of release. you'll remember that the magistrate judge conditioned donald trump's continued release on meeting standards of good behavior, such as not threatening or intimidating or talking to witnesses about the case. the court to have broad powers. if trump can appeal the order, not every order is appealable, but if he defied the order and continues to follow it, jim, he can face sanctions, and in the extreme cases where there is repeated violations or serious violations that can include suspension of release or incarceration as a penalty for contempt of an order. >> so much to watch for. thanks so much as always. assassination plot, coming up. what we are learning about a thwarted attempt on ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy spy. russian and chinese warship near alaska. the u.s. military responded to several vessels patrolling in international waters near the coast. what the pentagon is saying about that. world cup heartbreaker. sweden, knocking out the u.s. women's soccer team. a sudden dramatic penalty shot determined by video review. critics are trying t to suggest walters was a fafactor. all these stories and more ahead, coming up on "cnn news cecentral." ♪ i gotta good feeling about this, yeah ♪ ♪ i'm with it ♪ ♪ i gotta good feeling about this ♪ ♪ yeah, ♪ ♪ so let's get it ♪ ♪ i'm feeling good vibes ♪ hi, i'm stacey, and i've lost 60 pounds on golo. "barbie" distributed by warner brothers, which of course has the same parent company as we do at cnn. brianna? a heart breaker by just a hair. the united states women's national soccer team heading home after losing a sudden death shootout with sweden in the round of 16. the winning goal just barely crossing the line. it was so close that officials had to use goal line technology to confirm that it was, indeed legit. and this loss now ending u.s. hopes for a record world cup three peat and sparking speculation that the rest of the world has finally caught up with the americans. here is tnt soccer analyst and two-time world cup champ, julie foudy. >> you're seeing these teams, three out of the four african teams got through. jamaica got through. colombia got through. so south america doing better. so, you're seeing really a rise globally of the game. and so, this is a situation where i think people expect the united states because of all our past dominance to continue to dominate. and i just think that's unrealistic. >> let's talk about all this now. joining us we have former u.s. women's national team goalkeeper and world cup champion, brianna scurry, also the author of the book "my greatest save" the brave barrier breaking journey of a world champion goalkeeper. of course, brianna, you were the person to talk to about this. we all remember just how pivotal your performance was in '99. and so when you're looking at this, as a goalie and a national team veteran, what was your reaction to just how close that was? >> i was actually very astonished that we even got to the penalty kick shootout phase because that sweden goalkeeper was on fire. i mean, she made so many amazing saves. and it was just, in my opinion, fortunate that we went into the pks. and i knew alyssa was fantastic at pks. and i really felt confident that we would win. and i just -- my heart was broken for her because you could see on her face she couldn't believe it because she felt she had made that save. and any other year it would have been a save because it was so close, so razor close, like you said. but it was just a heart breaking way to end it because she had literally taken that team on her back in that penalty kick shootout and almost pulled it off single handedly. >> the athleticism of grabbing that ball was unbelievable, but just barely, barely missing it there. back to julie foudy's point here. the u.s. had been dominating for so long, four titles out of nine women's world cups. do you think the rest of the world has caught up to the u.s.? >> i think they definitely are catching up. i see a little differently than jewels does. i feel the definition of catching up would be teams that have won consistently over time. and we are still the only team that's been able to do that. we are missing a few pieces right now. i think with vlatko choosing to have 14 first-timers on the team at once, i think that was too much to expect from those players that started to carry the weight of goal scoring and whatnot on the team. that was a little too soon to have that young of a team in that environment. but now that they had the experience, i definitely feel like we could come and win again. we have a little coaching change. if that were to take place i think what we would do -- this may be controversial, but serena wegman the coach of england now, is by far my opinion the best coach on the planet for women's soccer. and if we could somehow woo her to coach our team, i think we could find ourselves hoisting trophies again. >> we know what you want then. you were out there vocally lobbying for that. >> yes. >> of course, and you know this, this team has inspired a flood of armchair analysts who are chiming in, including people who know nothing about soccer, some who do. former president donald trump posted a rant on truth social. he said in part, woke equals failure. the former u.s. men's national team player turned commentator alexi lalas, don't kill the messenger. is team is unlikable to a portion of america. we should notehahis record, if you put it up against say megan rapinoe's, it pales in comparison. what do you say to critics who are saying that this is a team that lost because they're too woke. or is there -- what do you think about that? >> i completely disagree. i think the reason this team was unable to do the greatness that it's used to doing has nothing to do with any of the things that these people mentioned. i think that having so many rookies on the team in positions of expectation of carrying the team with sofia smith, trinity rodman up top, expecting them to score a bunch of goals and this is their first time playing on a national team, major tournament, vlatko playing different lineups a lot. i don't think it has anything to do with the amazing achievements that we have done off the pitch. and the way that we have as a group stood up for those who can't speak for themselves. that's something we have done for 30 years and obviously has not been something that has hindered us in winning championships. we will win again, whether it's in the olympic games or the world cup in the future. we will. and we are the standard barers for women all over this world. that's what it takes to help other women in this country and other countries stand up and fight for what they deserve, then i, for one, am very proud of being someone who does that. i hope the team will continue to do so. i will do my part in that as well. >> briana scurry, always great to have you. you certainly know what a difference a save or a goal makes. so you're the person to talk to today. thank you. >> thank you so much for having me. appreciate it. jim?
