bodies were found along a quarter-mile stretch of go-go beach on the south shore of long island, new york. all four victims were young women in their 20s who advertised a work on craig list. their bodies were found within a quarter-mile stretch of beach, all bound at the feet or ankles and covered with burlap to hide them. it was a shocking discovery, and it was just the beginning. for the next year, seven more set of human remains were found in the area, mostly women. was this the work of a serial killer? that is the question investigators have been asking for more than a decade, with no answers until 2022, when a recent dna technology gave police a new lead. they now have a suspect, someone they say who is living a double life as a husband and father. police fear he was targeting even more victims. over the next hour, cnn will piece together exactly how police were able to identify the suspect and how the possible killer was able to get away with it for so long. >> state police? >> there is somebody after me. >> what is your name? >> shannon gilbert. >> where are you? >> i am in long island. >> and what is wrong? >> these people are following me. >> reporter: may 1st of 2010. >> she showed up at my door, banging on the door, screaming, "help me, help me, help me!" >> reporter: shannon gilbert, a 23-year-old woman working as an escort has been brought to a house party near go-go beach. on the picturesque island an hour east of new york city. something or someone prompted gilbert to call police. , she ran from the party and then toward the beach. >> that was the last i saw of her. >> reporter: shannon gilbert had disappeared. months later, >> missing persons unit called us out on saturday to follow up on an investigation on a missing person. >> reporter: during a search for gilbert, an officer and his cadaver dog made a startling discovery. >> at some point, the dog gave me an indication, which means his tail started waving, he started sampling the air. at that point, i saw the skeletal remains of a body. there is no indication that this is shannon from may 1st of this year. >> reporter: it was not shannon gilbert. and it was not just one body. >> we were quite surprised the second day, when we found a second body. it was approximately 500 feet west of the first body. then, we conducted a more detailed search and we found a third body and a fourth body. they were all within about 500 feet of each other. >> reporter: can you give more details about how they were found? >> most of the victims were bound, feet and hands. their bodies were covered in a camouflaged type of burlap that is used to obscure duck hunting blinds or a boat when you are hunting for ducks. >> it looks like a car pulled up, opened a door, and the bodies were dumped. >> some of these bodies had been there more than a year or so. there was clothing missing and personal effects missing. so that tells us we have someone who is taking their lives and keeping parts of them, an article of clothing or personal effect. the term they use in the serial killer genres "trophies" from his killings. >> reporter: long island has a serial killer. a little more than a month later, the public would learn the identities of the victims. >> the victims are maureen brainard-barnes of connecticut, amber lynn costello of north avalon, new york. megan waterman of maine. melissa bartolome of the bronx. >> we actually were watching the news and saw that there were four bodies found in long island. they actually showed the remains of one, a skeleton. we just started hollering, something called us. >> we knew it was her. just the size of the remains. >> reporter: melissa bartolome was petite and in her 20s, like all the other victims. >> he was very selective about people under five feet. he wanted young women who appeared younger by their size. >> reporter: it was not the only similarity. >> all of them were self- employed in the escort business. they were soliciting their services on craigslist and other websites on the internet. >> no matter what she did, she was our daughter and a friend of people. >> i would just like to put it out there that she was the light of my life. [ crying ] i would like to set the record straight that she was not a mean person, she was not a bad person. >> i bought into all the horrible stereotypes about victims in crimes like this. i assume they lived off the grid, that nobody was looking for them. in fact, their families have been looking for their lost loved ones, some of them for months, one of them for 3 1/2 years, one for two years. >> that was the bartholomew family, whose daughter melissa's initial disappearance in 2009 was followed by multiple phone calls to her 15-year-old sister, amanda. the calls were made by someone who claims to be her killer. >> the calls came in from melissa's phone. this was quite jarring, because she had been missing. we saw her caller i.d. come up, and her 15-year-old sister answers. >> he was taunting her, basically torturing her. she kept asking where her sister was, and he just would not tell her. she would ask if she was alive, he would not answer. i mean, we always had hope until that last call, when he told amanda that he had killed her. >> it was singularly the most chilling, disturbing, but also cruel thing you could do to a victim's family, especially a teenage sister who was searching for answers and trying to cling to hope. >> reporter: hope that was fueled when police began tracing those calls, but that lead nowhere. >> the caller made sure he called from very busy areas, like madison square garden and times square, so that the cameras that are out there would look down into a crowded field, and at any given time there were at least dozens of people talking on cell phones. >> reporter: at the time, the gilbert family was holding out hope, too. >> after those first four women were found, police announced they would keep looking for shannon gilbert. and in the months after those women were discovered, they did find more human remains. >> in the last hours, another body believed to be that of a fifth woman, turns up on the same stretch. >> and then they found more. >> reporter: eight bodies discovered on gilgo beach, on long island, three found just yesterday. >> then they found more, then they found more, something like 11 people that were found who may or may not be connected to one another, may or may not have been connected to those first four women. >> reporter: all of them in the area around gilgo beach, and none of them shannon gilbert. and as the bodies piled up, so did the concerns. >> can you talk about gilgo beach, the tension that i imagine was arising after the discoveries? >> when you start to have several murder victims, and those bodies have been there for quite some time, it brought tremendous fear to the community. >> reporter: which was usually a tranquil place. >> these are communities of individuals that love to be around the beach, they like to enjoy the better parts of life, peace and quiet. and if you think along that long strip of highway along gilgo beach, it is a peaceful drive, a peaceful walk. >> reporter: and it is something else, too. an ideal spot for the end of a violent spree. >> it is a near-perfect burial ground, not far off the road, in a wooded area, a few feet more you are in marshes with water and tallgrass. when you get to the road, you can look for miles in one direction or the other and see any vehicles or people coming. it gives you a real chance to work on observed, particularly at night in the dark. >> reporter: by the end of 2011, police would finally find shannon gilbert's body, three miles from the so-called gilgo beach floor. then, another surprise in a case full of them. police let it be known that they did not believe gilbert's debt was connected to the hunt for a serial killer, the one that her disappearance helped launch. it was an investigation that lays dormant for a decade, until a new way of looking at the case changed everything. >> today is a good day. the first time you connected your godaddy website and your store was also the first time you realized... well, we can do anything. cheesecake cookies? the chookie! manage all your sales from one place with a partner that always puts you first. ♪ ♪ there's never a dull moment for the nelsons'... fifth generation montana ranchers. since 1868, they've been... move! herding cattle, reeling in trout, and exploring paradise valley from their backyard. here's to another 150 years of adventure. there's a story in every piece of land. run with us on a john deere gator xuv and start telling yours. >> our theory is now that there is one killer involved. we are leaning toward one serial killer scenario. >> reporter: one year after the remains of the four missing women were found here, found in burlap and dumped in the marshland of long island great south bay, the quiet town of gilgo beach had plunged into a fog of fear. and the investigation into the murders showed little sign of progress. >> i think that the fact that have been disclosed so far do not bear out a single killer theory at all. >> an investigation like this, you would think every agency would want to collaborate to try to get the killer. but here, in suffolk county, you had a police force that was kind of at odds with the district attorney. the collaboration was really compromised from the beginning. >> you had a very dedicated team of investigators, but you also had a police department that was going through dysfunction, corruption, and investigations into itself. you had the chief of the county police department under investigation by the fbi, who were also investigating the district into attorney. >> outside agencies like the fbi, who might be inclined to investigate this corrupt official, were being kept away from the case. >> reporter: another problem, some say, was that investigators lack the motivation to solve these murders from the start. >> from the beginning, it was abundantly clear that if these murder victims have been college students or corporate workers that the case would have been taken much more seriously. it was very clear that there was a victim-blaming going on. it could not help but impact the case. >> i don't want anybody to think we have a jack the ripper running around suffolk county with blood dripping from a knife. >> i think it was very comforting when we found out he was targeting a specific group of women, that made it something that was removed from us. >> reporter: between the scandal-written the police department, nearly a dozen sets of remains, and a marginalized group of victims, the gilgo murder case officially went cold, frozen, it seemed, for years until a gradual shift in leadership opened the door to a fresh start. >> one of the great things about geraldine hart becoming commissioner in suffolk county is that she has better career at the fbi. so, this was an amazing moment where not only was she able to get people from the fbi and people from the suffolk county police department to work together on a regular basis on this case, she also was able to talk to folks in the fbi about dna analysis, and other scientific techniques that a police department like suffolk was not able to do. >> good afternoon. >> reporter: to no surprise in 2020, put the mission her heart held an unexpected press conference on the case, revealing a new clue for the first time in years. >> a black leather belt in boston with the letters "hm or wh" was recovered during the initial stages during this investigation. we believe that the belt was handled by the suspect and did not belong to any of the victims. >> a short time after that press conference, geraldine hart had another press conference, announcing they had successfully identified another victim. >> today, we are announcing that jane doe number six has been positively identified as valerie mack. >> that, to me, was -- a sign they were rolling up their sleeves and getting to work. >> reporter: the work continued into the next administration. in 2022, and my pity veteran rodney harrison replaced hart as the new suffolk county police commissioner. one of his first move was to launch an interagency task force dedicated to solving the gilgo murders. >> when you took office, why was it so important for you to start the task force? >> i wanted to make sure we were working with all our law enforcement partners. the objective is to put a dragon out there, see what we could do to get as many people as possible to participate, reach out to their networks, and see if we could get closer to identifying a subject. it paid off. >> reporter: one of the first important bleed that caught the attention of the new task force came from a witness who told investigators that the night before the victim amber costello 's disappearance, a client arrived at her home, and they described him. >> 6'4", 250 pounds, a big mop of hair, giant 1970s-style glasses. the witness said he was huge, looks like an ogre. >> reporter: investigators also obtained costello cell phone records, which revealed that a burner phone number contacted her that night, just before the client entered her home. the following night on september 2nd, the same burner cell phone contacted costello again. shortly after, costello left her house and a witness spotted a dark green -colored vehicle nearby. >> so, the state police investigators started to work on the car. she says, i am going to enter the search as a green pickup truck, and it comes back to a chevy avalanche in south carolina, registered to a guy, but it uses to be registered right here. who wasn't registered to? rex your men. okay, who is rex? they run him. no criminal record. what does rex look like? he is 6'4" and 250 pounds. he wears big, round glasses, he has a mop of hair, he has a green truck. >> i am not sure exactly when i said that is our guy, but i will say this. when we were able to track back that green avalanche was when i thought we were getting close. the car, exactly. >> reporter: investigators kept digging, and they discovered that, just like costello, cell phone records from victims melissa but felony and megan waterman were contacted by burner phones in the hours before they disappeared, but it was the locations where those burner forms pink that was most interesting. >> what they were able to do was narrow down the area where the phones were pinging to an area in midtown manhattan, around fifth avenue and 35th street, thereabouts, and another area in massapequa. massapequa park, on long island. >> reporter: both are locations key to rex huberman, his office in midtown manhattan at his home in massapequa park, just across the bay from the ocean parkway where the bodies of the gilgo four were discovered. >> i think the big breakthrough with the task force was the use of cell phone records. >> reporter: nathan lands is a professor at john jay college of criminal justice in new york city. >> that allow them to identity location in manhattan and the location on long island, and they were able to connect it to his cell phone as well. he was using a burner phone, but in his pocket was his regular cell phone, which was also making things. they were able to connect those two, so even the use of a burner phone did not conceal his identity as well as he hoped it would. >> reporter: further investigating confirmed that over the years, huberman frequently used burner phones to contact workers, and as recently as may 2023, investigators spotted him purchasing additional minutes linked to a burner cell phone. >> he is growing into the suspect, because we now have a car, we had a face, we have the geographic connection. but that is all circumstantial. they need that thin hair of evidence that will go from circumstantial to certainty. and the thin hair of evidence turns out to be a literal hair. >> two of his hairs, apparently, according to the document that we have read, can be connected to his wife, and one can be connected straight to him. >> now, we are in a different place. >> today is a good day. >> what did it feel like to tell the public that we got the guy, this is who he is? >> it out good. this is the reason why i became a police officer. >> ladies and gentlemen, rex huberman is a demon that walks among us. i know it has been a long time coming. there might have been something we could have done better, but we are here today, announcing we are placing this animal under arrest. >> reporter: up next, who is rex huberman? >> i think it has taught me more about how to understand people. >> reporter: now an acute serial killer, police are struggling to understand him. >> what was his personal life like you? >> we are still learning more about who he is. no one that he worked with or know one that hired him or his firm ever brought anything to our attention. >> this is not a guy who has police going to his house often for service. >> correct. >> reporter: even surveilling him, he seems normal. >> it was like everyday life. he never did anything, he was a normal, peaceful, law abiding citizen. >> what surprised you most about huberman? >> i was surprised that he had a family. i was surprised we had such a high profile job. i expected somebody who kept to himself, who was not hiding in plain sight. >> reporter: for decades, huberman, his wife and two children live here, in massapequa park on long island, new york. >> a great neighborhood, good schools, nice area. the houses are mostly well-kept. >> reporter: among the properties in this shoreline village, huberman's home stands out. >> anybody who drives by is always looking, it is kind of annoying. >> i just said don't trick-or- treat there. the house is not look right, but you never thought there would actually be anything happening. >> reporter: a source involved in the investigation believes huberman may have lured the victims to his home, killed them there, and then dump the bodies. >> every time a murder was committed, his wife was out of the state. >> reporter: huberman's wife was in maryland when megan waterman went missing, according to authorities. new jersey went amber lynn costello vanished, and iceland when melissa barthelemy was last seen. >> you are probably wondering why his wife of 20 years filed for divorce. i don't think she knew. >> i think she was heartbroken. also, speaking to the daughter and the son, giving them the information, the horrible news, i am being told they were embarrassed. >> it is quite common for serial killers to have good jobs and families, wives and kids who they care about. families who have no idea what they are doing in their free time, when they have literally some time to kill. john dwane casey, while his wife was away, would have young men over and he would bury the remains of 29 of his 33 victims in the crawlspace of the house. his wife would ask him, what is that odor? he would tell her it was a sewer gases and they will take care of it. >> reporter: huberman's home, office, and storage units were scoured for evidence. office furniture, a playboy magazine, an arsenal, according to authorities, of guns was found in the basement of that home. >> he has got 92 guns registered to him at home. they find out it is not 92 guns, it is somewhere between two and 300 guns, these are pistols, revolvers, semiautomatics. >> reporter: what sort of items are you looking for? >> jewelry, anything that can be attached to the women. >> these serial sexual killers will very likely take what we call a souvenir from a victim. >> reporter: fbi profiler maryellen o'toole has investigated serial murder cases for nearly three decades. >> that souvenir could be a lock of hair, could be a body part. it is important to them because it enables them to relive and re-fantasize about what they did. >> joel rifkin, another long island serial killer, kept souvenirs of his victim's' jewelry, clothing, he kept them in his bedroom. >> reporter: response to find more evidence and possibly more victims has expanded across the country. >> he did travel, he did have a residence somewhere else. >> do you believe there are more victims out there? >> i believe someone is organized, this determined, that person does not quit. >> reporter: authorities are now actively investing in huberman's connection to nevada, south carolina, and new jersey. >> huberman and his wife owned condos in las vegas. can you give any insight into the investigation in nevada? >> i know we are working with local officials there, trying to track on anything they may have. >> reporter: tax records show huberman also owns four large plots of land in northern south carolina. >> what did you find itself carolina? >> one thing we found was the truck, that was the main reason we went down, to bring the truck back and process it. we will look through, see what we can potentially uncover. >> reporter: the truck was a green chevrolet avalanche. when one of the women in huberman is accused of killing disappeared, a witness told investigators they saw the killer driving a green pickup, according to two law enforcement sources with knowledge of the case. authorities also believe huberman may have ties to other unsolved murders in atlantic city. >> we were able to get his google searches off of a particular email address. >> reporter: online, huberman google search history revealed a troubled mind fascinated by his alleged murders. >> he was sort of obsessively searching for details about the gilgo beach investigation. >> it is extremely common for these offenders to follow their cases in the media. >> the monitor, bt k for binds torture kill, hoping the moniker will make him a little more newsworthy. >> he asked me, do i know about the gilgo beach murders? >> clearly, the new testing was the biggest break in the case, we would not have able to do that in 2010 because the technology was not available. >> reporter: while the 2022 task force investigation that ultimately led to rex huberman arrest was undeniably exhaustive and detailed, >> this kind of manhunt is pretty unprecedented. >> reporter: 16 months of surveillance, cell phone singles triangulated, security footage scanned, internet searches and email accounts access, credit card and travel records scoured. but experts agree that one tool tipped the scales. >> it was dna that eventually led to a definitive identification. dna technology is probably advancing faster than any other biotechnology you can think of, even faster than computing. >> reporter: dna expert nathan lenz points out that evidence gathered now may take years to yield results as science advances. >> the remainder put in a burlap sack rather than plastic, so they were more subjected to the elephant elements. the evidence begins to get erased, like an etch-a-sketch over time. whether does eventually wash away evidence, it blows away and decays. >> one of the big questions on this case for the last 12 years was, was their dna at all? the police were not saying. but it turns out it was so minuscule that it took a new development in the technology for them to do the kind of analysis to connect to a suspect. >> reporter: in 2020, the fbi launched that next level dna testing with new protocols for forensic crime labs. >> this was one of the first cases pursued using this technology. >> the shaft of the hair has mitochondrial dna. over time and decomposition, the root disappears, and all you have left is the shaft. >> mitochondrial dna is much smaller, and it is much more robust, so it lasts a much longer time. it endures in hair samples, even if you don't get a root. >> all you need is about one centimeter of hair to get a genetic profile. >> reporter: and those microscopic bits of hair would eventually lead to a breakthrough. >> hairs were identified on one of the remains that were not from the victim. the problem is, they did not have anyone to compare them to. >> reporter: enter suffolk county police detectives working undercover to surveil huberman. >> so they began collecting evidence from his home. >> the surveillance team picked up 11 bottles and brought them to the lab. they swabbed the bottles, collected dna. >> but it did not belong to the alleged perpetrator, it belongs to his wife. >> she was not even in the state when any of these murders occurred. >> so it becomes a case of hair analysis. >> it is not unusual that huberman transfer hair from his wife to his victims. >> hair is ubiquitous, people use about 125 scalp hairs per day just from living. that hair tends to stick to clothing. >> you can have hair from someone you have been in contact with for days later. >> in this case, they found three female hairs on two of the bodies, and they found a male hair on one of the victims. >> reporter: the key question, did that male hair belong to their prime suspect? >> what they need from rex huberman is dna. a surveillance team is sent to midtown manhattan, the area where he works, and they are basically watching the building. he comes out, and he goes to a pizza place, and they see him go through three slices of pizza. then he takes the box and shoves it into a green trash can. >> that was a treasure trove of dna, that pizza box. >> so, from a chain of custody standpoint, they have seen an eating it carrying it, and discarding it. they pulled that box out. >> we were able to test it, to match his dna to the dna from the crime scenes. >> dna from the hair matched the defendant, rex huberman. >> reporter: just one month after lab results, police had enough evidence to make the arrest. local tv cameras captured him in custody. >> rex, did you do it? save custody of her son? >> yeah. >> melissa spoke to cnn in 2011 after maureen's body was identified in gilgo beach. >> i can't even describe to myself how bad it deals to be, you know, a family member of one of these girls that were found. >> kim overstreet sister was also one of the gilgo four. 21-year-old amber lynn castillo was last seen in 2010. >> that is my baby sister. >> like her sister, kim worked as an escort, but she believes amber was more vulnerable because of her struggles with addiction. >> by the time she was probably 16 years old up until the day she went, she was still fighting it. so, you know, she had a hard life, she really did. >> cnn took him to amber's home in west babylon where she was last seen by friends. >> are you okay? >> yeah. >> tell me what is going on? >> it's just, this is the last place she was, you know? and i have been with her so many times and -- [ crying ] i just can't believe the one time i'm not with her, that happens. >> amber's residence was just under 40 miles from the home of melissa bartholomew in the bronx. her body was the first of the gilgo four to be found. melissa was only 24 when she went missing in 2009, after she finally graduated from high school. >> she had dropped out of school because she was having a few problems and she got herself back in school, she didn't want a ged. she wanted a diploma. and she went back, and she got all straight a's and she graduated. >> after high school, melissa moved from her hometown of buffalo, to new york city. >> she thought she could make a lot more money because she wanted to open her own salon back home and buy a house. that kind of money wasn't available here. >> melissa found work quickly in a barbershop, and then made friends easily while living in the city. >> if she had five dollars in her pocket and you needed five dollars to get something to eat, she would give you the whole thing. >> melissa soon found that cutting hair wasn't enough, so she turned to exotic dancing, and eventually, escorting. >> it is still hard for me to take it all in because she always knew that she could come home. >> lynn wanted to make sure that melissa and the rest of the gilgo four are remembered for who they were. >> it doesn't matter what they did for a living. they are still all beautiful girls. they were very young, and they had a lot of life. >> more than anything, though, melissa's mother wanted justice. >> we want to catch this guy. we want to stop him before anymore girls go missing. >> 14 years later, police have now said they have the very same fear, that there prime suspect could strike again. they had to act. >> we had the fbi surveilling the defendant. this individual was a person that continued to patronize sex workers at all hours of the night. he continued to use fictitious email addresses, fictitious identities, burner phones. it was time to take him off the street. >> this is the kind of case a prosecutor dreams about. it is an extraordinarily strong case that combines an incredible amount of circumstantial evidence with technological evidence, in terms of cell phones and scientific evidence, in terms of dna. >> is this case over, from your perspective? >> not even close. you know? we still have six bodies that were recovered on ocean parkway. we have some work to do. this task force is going to stay intact and are these other women connected to these bodies?
