berman with brianna keilar. overnight a dramatic and deadly end to an 11-day manhunt for an alabama inmate charged in capital murder and a former corrections officer accused in aiding in his escape. casey white was charged monday after a pursuit in a crash in indiana. but vicky white died after taken into custody and hospitalized with self-inflicted wounds. >> police say no law enforcement officers, and casey white officers reportedly told officers to help this wife. but the fugitives were not married. in the days after her capture, hundreds of tips were flooding across the country including one sunday that ultimately led to the arrest. cnn's miguel marquez has did the details. >> reporter: the manhunt is over, the escape corrections officer chaes white and vicky white were apprehended monday. >> this has ended a very long and stressful and challenging week and a half. vicky white died shortly after being taken to the hospital after what u.s. marshals believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. they say she was earlier seen leaving the hotel with a wig on when the pair drove away. police officers were watching, then gave chase. >> there was a chase. a vehicle chase. and the suspect wrecked the car, rolled over. and we approached the vehicle, to get the two suspects out. we got casey white out. and then we announced that his wife had shot herself in the head and that he didn't do it. >> reporter: casey white will be brought back to alabama to a different facility than where he was held previously. he is still facing previous murder charges. the 11-day manhunt came to a close after a tip sunday night that casey white was seen at a car wash in evansville. authorities believe that the two were first seen in evansville may 3rd. >> unfortunately, we had no information that they had any relatives or associates in the area. but we do know they intended to stay in the evansville area for a period of time. >> reporter: the fair had purchased three vehicles to evade authorities since they fled on april 29th. >> we were able to locate a vehicle that they purchased in tennessee after the orangeford edge was located. we were subsequently able to locate that vehicle in a car wash in evansville, indiana. from that, our teams along with the task force were able to put additional information together that led to us the hotel. >> reporter: vicky white had sold her home recently well below market value. this is how authorities believe the pair had so much money at their disposal. >> it's almost incomprehensible they had that period of time and seemed to have wasted it in evansville, indiana, essentially allowing the investigation to catch up with them. they had the cash, ability and modes of transport, they just didn't take advantage of it and that's how they got caught. >> reporter: vicky white was facing charges of permitting and facilitating escape in the first degree as well as theft and identity charges announced earlier monday. the former corrections officer involvement in this case has stumped the people closest to her. they are shocked that she allegedly helped casey white escape. >> i think she knew the day was going to come. they were going to get caught. so, i just don't understand it. an i don't know that i ever will. we've known vicky a long time. and this is just, the whole fiasco is just so totally out of character for her. >> joining us now cnn law enforcement analyst jonathan wackrow. what questions do you still have here? >> well, good morning. this was a stunning end to, you know, a week-long, you know, manhunt. thankfully the public and law enforcement, you know, were uninjured in these dramatic final moments. but i want to just say that, you know, the causes of these man hunts, manhunt situations vary greatly from incident to incident. the outcomes are often the same. the suspect are apprehended or killed by law enforcement. there are a lot of questions we don't know. and unfortunately, a lot of those questions may remain unanswered because of, you know, vicky white taking her own life, right. we need to know what was the motivation from her, to engage in this relationship. you know, what was the end goal for her to work with a violent criminal, to basically have this dereliction of duty to let him escape into the public with her. i mean, again, just a lot of unanswered questions right now. >> you talk about the unanswered questions, jonathan. most of them i imagine aren't about the lastest days. this manhunt, you see the pictures right there, the way it ended but the questions must be about the vehicles, if not months, maybe even years ago before the escape. >> john, great point. listen when i look at this incident, right, i don't look at it just at what we're reporting today. i look backwards. i look at the order of consequences of this relationship from the moment that they decided to engage with each other. you know, how did that develop over time. what type of information can vicky white give to casey white, throughout that relationship, that really could compromise the safety of the correctional facility that they were in, the other officers. again, this is -- this is such a dereliction of duty on her part. but we just don't know the level of damage, was she giving proprietary information to casey white that could be utilized days, weeks, months from now, at that facility that could put others at harm? again, thinking through this, we look at this incident, the public wasn't harmed today. we just don't know the level of the order of consequences right now. and how they may impact the correctional facility in the long term. >> yeah. certainly, so many questions here, jonathan wackrow, thank you so much, appreciate it. >> thank you. new this morning in ukraine, russian forces stepping up their assault on the southern port see of odesa, firing hypersonic missiles the a number of locations including a shopping mall, hotels. widespread damage you can see there. one person at least was killed. in kharkiv, a civilian facility was attacked. you were can see the vehicles, the attack after trying to escape. baby strollers, toys scattered around. several people killed. meanwhile, russia is holding back some of its forces in its own borders to a counteroffensive. a senior official tells cnn anecdotal reports reveal that some russian troops and officers are refusing to obey orders to move forward in the new donbas offensive. >> the bodies of 44 civilians found in the rubble of a five-story building in the town of izyum. ukrainian officials say the building was destroyed by russian forces. russian troops have been in control of izyum for nearly two months. this is the last holdout in the besieged city of mariupol. and ukrainian officials say several hundred soldiers remaining at the azovstal steel plant are refusing to give up the fight. at least 100 civilians, mostly men, are still trapped. video shows a ukrainian flag still flying over the steel plant. cnn cannot verify that it is still there. and here at home, the house of representatives today will consider an additional $40 billion in supplemental funding for ukraine. president biden calling on cock to act immediately, warning that existing aid will run out in approximately ten days. >> we'll bring in cnn's isa soares live in ukraine. let's start with the repeated attacks in odesa. >> reporter: a very good morning to you, john and brianna. president putin didn't reveal his hand as we saw on monday, with forces not holding back, pummeling the port city of odesa, with missiles being fired from submarines, ships and planes. witnesses felt the impact of those strikes about 25 miles or so away. those strikes were felt and hit, really, three hypersonic missiles hitting a shopping mall. luckily that was closed at the time. but also hitting two hotels, one of them is very beloved by the russian elite, we have been told. officials saying one person has died, several others injured. russian forces pummeled the port city. we know the port city president charles michel was actually touring with the ukrainian prime minister. the ukrainian prime minister taking a photo, tweeting it out, them having to hunker down in a basement as odesa was being pummeled by russian forces. >> isa soares thank you so much. in the luhansk region a pontoon bridge that aided in supply routes. i want to bring in tom foreman. >> if you look at the rivers that runs through here, including the river they're concerned about now which is up in this area, one of the concerns all along, has been the russians would manage to get behind ukrainian forces, isolate them, cut off their supplies and then chop away at them. this bridge up in that area is one of the pontoon bridges built here. remember, ukrainian having blown up a lot of their own bridges as they have retreated from the areas that russians came in, knowing that russians are a traditional military force, they need to move big pieces of equipment, artillery, tanks, things like that and they need bridges. they try to cut them off and the russians keep trying to rebuild it, brianna. >> what might they be trying to do here? >> well, what they're trying to do is move into that area. and remember, what has happened before, the ukrainians have been able to destroy many bridges out here which has really slowed down the russian movement here. remember, though, as we talked about some time before, the russians have now consolidated their command over these areas. so they may be a little more coordinated in what they're trying to do. again, the russians want nothing more than to push into this area and somehow get essentially behind the ukrainians and cut them off from their supplies. the ukrainians are saying if you can control the rivers you can keep that from happening. that's why they're so focused on this. we've seen a lot of action right in this area. >> you can talk about the location being near bilrifa. >> yeah this is near the school bombing that we saw 90 civilians in this building, dozens of people killed. they're still trying to get to this, in terms of -- going through the rubble here, trying to figure out how many people were killed here. this is very close to the sharp, sharp action between the russians and ukrainians. these bridges, i can't overstate this enough, brianna, from the very beginning the ukrainians knew against a traditional military like this, cut the bridges, let the rivers serve as barriers that can at very least slow down the russians. that is a plan that's worked for them that they're not giving up on. >> it's been instrumental. it's made the difference certainly in the battle for kyiv. tom foreman, thank you so much. >> you're welcome. all right. we do have major news just in. gas prices, new report overnight, it comes as major banks see ingredients for a global recession are on the table. president biden set to address the nation this morning on all of this. action to increase security for supreme court justices, as the national outskrie over that leaked opinion on abortion rights hits a fever pitch. and growing questions surrounding the deaths of three americans in a sandals resort in the bahamas. what autopsies could reveal. if you've been liviving with heart disease, reducing cholesterol can n be hard, even when you're taking a statin and beingng active. but you can do hard. you lived through the blizzard of '96... 12 unappreciative bosses... >> well, there's a bunch of them potentially in trouble. erdogan in turkey, quite similar to putin. he was hailed as a liberal reformer. he's now been there 20 years, locked up many of his opponents. he's now facing consequences of misgovernment. rampant inflation. he will have an election and maybe he could fall. the other thing with strongman leaders even those who face elections, balassinaro, and he' showed with the election rejecting you can claim it's a fraud, whatever, you can attempt to reverse that result. and i think that is a real danger in ea lot of these countries. >> well that is particularly chilling, one of the things that struck me going through your book, you remind people in the list of strongmen you're talking about, they're almost elected, at least the first time? >> yeah, even xi jinping had constitutional restraints. interestingly, this year, it's important for him, he's abolishing terms in china. but people liar erdogan, balon narro, abdomen they erode the crackdown on media freedom. you'll see the courts packed with friendly judges so they can't be checked in that way. and you'll see them surround themselves with sycophants and people who can't say no to them. and that has its dangers. i think that's one of the reasons putin is trouble in ukraine. because he had so centralized power that there was nobody able, it seems, to say this plan's not going to work. >> yeah -- >> yeah. >> i was going to say it might be the key to the success, gideon and the key to the failure that we're looking at there. gideon, it's a fascinating road map. we appreciate you sharing it with us. thank you so much. >> my pleasure. is the queen's health worse than publicly known? >> john, i think it's a poignant reminder that the queen won't be around forever and prince charles will be in that role. we've seen her stepping back increasingly over time but this is the first time i can really think of where he's not been able to carry out one of her core constitutional roles. if you match, you know, got a strained system here, still up over time, parliament for us, the house of commons, the lower house, the upper house, the house of lords and the monarch. and parliament can't open without all three coming together on opening day. that's what happened, today, the queen couldn't get to parliament. you see it symbolized by a crown. not there in body. what she had to do, give legal orders to give charles and william the ability to act on her behalf with the crown. her robe was taken away. he's sitting there, he read a speech written by the government which outlines the government's agenda for the next parliamentary session. that's the first time he's read it. although the queen hasn't been always able to make the occasion. it was a time ago when -- the last time she missed it. but this was a big moment for him to read that speech. and this is, you know, increasingly what will we're going to see and that the monarch really does have power in this country. >> max, this is something that she really had planned on attending and wanted to up until the last few days? >> we were told last night she wasn't able to do it. we had been given warning to make that decision. we won't if she'll turn up for any of those occasions until the day itself. but the fundamental role of eye any monarch is that constitutional rule, head of state. he's able to prioritize those. she's able to receive a new prime minister, they can go to her. but this is one role that she can go to. it's a sign she's weakening, as we understand it, she's got mobility issues that keep coming back. >> max foster, thank you so much. keep us posted there. a new milestone for space exploration, with recent images captured by the space observatory. the james webb telescope providing nasa a much, much clear look beyond our galaxy. cnn's kristen fisher has been following recent developments and joins us. as berman said, the truth is out there. so what is it, kristin fisher? >> well, we're going to find out with the webb telescope. just to be clear here, what we're looking at are test images. these are not the official first scientific images that we're supposed to get from the webb space telescope. if we can pop up this -- here we are, this coming into focus. that right there, that's cloudy, that's the image from the spitzer space telescope did which is an old infraread telescope from nasa that's now retired. watch it come into focus, there's the spitzer and now when it comes into focus, that's the webb space telescope. that's the difference in clarity that scientists are able to see when we get the first images back from the webb space telescope. you can see the stars so much more defined. the clouds, nebulous clouds most more defined as well. these are the types of images that astronomers have literally been waiting decades for. so, when we can expect to get those first scientific images, that's what everybody is waiting for now. nasa held a press conference yesterday. they say we can expect those very first images by sometime likely in mid-july. of course, this is all designed to answer some of those big existential questions like are we alone in the universe? and where did that first light in the universe come from? >> so what is the leap? how did that change things from being able to see things better to answering the questions? >> well, it lets them actually see into some of the atmospheres around some of these eso planets. once you can term what the planets are made of. then you can get insight into -- what exactly -- how they're formed and potentially if there is life, what exactly that may look like. you know, something else that was astounding yesterday. i mean, this is such a complex machine. it has more than 300 single points of failure. at any point in time something -- you know, it would have been so easy for something really terrible to happen to this telescope. yet yesterday, nasa and the engineers said it is responding perfectly. they would not change a single thing. if they could change something to this telescope right now, the controllers on the ground say they wouldn't tweak it. it is performing perfectly. now, we get back to sit and wait while they put the finishing touches on it, they calibrate it, so speak to and get the first images. >> look, once you get under the hood of an exo planet there is no end to what there is. i always say. >> john, think of what happened with the hubble space telescope, right?
