gardens. a lot were burned. >> no one should be making idle comments about the use of nuclear weapons. welcome to the show, it is friday, april 29, and officials say an operation is planned to get civilians out of the besieged azovstal steel plant in mariupol, that is expected to happen today we're being told, but they didn't provide any further details. as soon as we have more of those details, of course we'll bring them to you. h hundreds of civilians have been holed up there for weeks. the plant was hit on wednesday night with what ukrainian officials say was the heaviest russian airstrikes yet. meantime volodymyr zelenskyy is calling for a strong response to russian strikes on kyiv while the u.n. secretary-general was still in the capital. the strikes caused damage to an apartment building injuring at least ten people. and military says that heavy shelling by russian forces is continuing along the entire line of contact in the eastern region's as you see on the map. and we are learning of more attacks this hour on russian-held areas. a fuel depot was set on fire by russian-backed forces. and the governor says that shelling and mortar fire hit a checkpoint bordering ukraine. we have not had any confirmation from ukraine that it is responsible for either of those attacks. and ukraine says that it needs # $33 billion in new funding, most would quego toward military but billions would also be spent on economic and humanitarian aid. and president biden is calling on congress on get the latest aid package passed as quickly as possible. if approved, the total would be brought to some $50 billion since the start of the invasion. >> we believe that takes tangible demonstration of how seriously we're taking the continued threat to ukraine's sovereignty, to their people. it is a complete package. >> we want to take you to a town in southern ukraine that is bracing for that russian assault. the residents say that russian tanks are positioned just a kilometer away from their homes and ukrainian offenders still control the town. nick paton walsh was there. >> reporter: if moscow had any surprises left, it is along here. here the western side is caught in the fast-changing landscape of this week's push. that is the prize over there, the river is up past which on the left side bank here the russians are trying to push, wanting controlling of both sides of that vital part of ukraine. here we are told there are a handful of russian tanks just over a kilometer away on its outskirts, pushing, probing, but ultimately kept at bay by ukrainian forces that still hold the town. brazilians here embodied under the threat of rocket fire planting onions. i'm here until victory, she said. her children are gone, it is just her and her mother. and her mother says she is not going anywhere and she won't leave her alone. all her windows are blown out, she says. ukrainian forces who don't want their positions filmed are dotted around the town as too are the signs of innocent lives lost here. rockets peeking out from under the water. and this boat in which 14 civilians tried to flee russian occupation on april 7, four of them died when moscow's troops opened fire when it was 17 meters out. yet still the desperate keep fleeing. this morning these women left behind their men to defend their ho homes. we ran, ran early in the morning, she says. they didn't let us out. we're shields for them. they don't let us out and by foot, by bicycle we go in the fields, we ran. our soldiers were two kilometers away and we ran to them. they need the russians tank, she says, take cars. they draw z on everything as the new unwanted guests demanded milk and food at gunpoint, they had a glimpse of their warned mindset. they say that they have come to liberate us, that is what they told us. they say that america is fighting here but using the hands of ukrainians to do it. that's what they say. another claim to be fueled by the violence of the long war with separatists in the east. in general the donetsk militants say, she said, that you have been bombing us for eight years. now we bomb you. across the fields, artillery swallow whole once happy worlds. nick paton walsh, cnn, ukraine. president zelenskyy says ten russian service men have now been identified as suspects in crimes committed in bucha where scores of civilians you remember were found dead after russian forces pulled out. the town's funeral director and coroner spoke with cnn about the horrors. >> translator: we collected them from the roadsides, from basements. we had to exhume some of the bodies because they were forcibly buried in people's gardens and a lot were burned. we found the family of six people, five adults and one child, and they were shot and then burned. >> now, that is in bucha. to the east russian shells and missiles have been raining down on ukraine's second largest city for two months now. kharkiv was one of the first cities to come under attack when russia invaded and russian bombardment is new constant. take a look at what missiles did to the city's regional council. >> this building was hit by russian missile rocket on the first of march. it is severely damaged. and especially damaged is this part of the building where the rocket hit. it has no floor there because everything fall upside down. >> that video there and that voice you heard there is was taken by my next guest, a security expert and resident of kharkiv who is joining me now. maria, thank you for taking the time to speak to us. we just looked at that video of you inside the regional council building. you can paint a picture of what you've been seeing the past couple days. >> in kharkiv, in general the situation is in terms of the shelling because previously russian troops were shelling residential areas to the north and east of kharkiv where the russian troops are now situated, so they were basically shelling day and night those areas and people are not living in their homes. but sheltering and living in the metro station. but what happens now is that russian troops start to shell the territories all over the city. for example, yesterday the area which was before considered to be safe was shelled and people were killed there to the south of kharkiv. so now russia again using the tactics of terrorizing different locations and candidate areas in the city so that people will be threatened and terrified and nowhere in the city now anyone can feel safe. schools, kindergartens. i myself was with a team of first responders near the school that was shelled. no children are of course there, but still people are hiding in the basement of these schools because that was considered to be one of the safe places where you can hide. but now it can happen anywhere in the city so that the tactics has changed and the russian troops are now bringing more troops to the nearby russian regions and it means that the shelling of the city might intensify in the upcoming days. >> let me break some of what you just said down slightly. in terms of civilians, you said that some were in the basements of schools, some on train stations. give me the sense of the numbers and the struggles of course for people to leave to get out. >> well, for now it is possible, still we know that russia is now also targeting the railways because several days ago five railway stations around ukraine were targeted and that means that they will probably try to block the aid that is coming to the east from the western ukraine and that is supplied by our allies. but railway station in the city itself is intact. before it was not targeted. but this is the major infrastructure railway station. and so if russian troops will at any moment try to bring something into ukraine, they will need this railway here because it is the only way from russia into the territory. so what they will do is probably target the nearby station and tactics will continue and battle for kharkiv will eventually start. >> and you were saying that, you know, you expect some of the shelling, the intensity of the shelling to intensify in the coming days. from your vantage point, do ukrainian forces have the upper hand when it comes to control of the city? >> yes, i am pretty sure about that. when i say that it will intensify, i have an example of mariupol in my eyes because what is happening there, these atrocities, you of course now that now more than 500 wounded people who were in the hospital and they still -- they have been shelled, the hospital itself, and people are dying because they don't have access to water, any basic medical assistance, to anything. and russia continues to wipe out the plant itself from the face of earth and that is why ukraine is urgently asking for evacuation through corridors that russia blocks. and that is the tactics that they use everywhere. but ukrainian troops on the ground are ready for anything. and now they are even doing counteroffensive operations to the north and to the east of kharkiv. it means that several villages more have been liberated and ukrainian troops don't just protect the city, but they are trying to move russian forces back further to the border so that they will not be able to shell as they do now because they usually shell with a grass roots system and they have medium range. and so if they will be further, it means that the destruction will be lesser. >> and of course on the point of mariupol that you were making, you were spot on, we haven't had any humanitarian corridors for a week or so now, but we have heard in the last i'd say about 45 minutes or so from president zelenskyy's office, an operation is planned for today. we haven't been given any details as of yet, but that relates to the azovstal steel plant and of course the 1,000 or so civilians stuck inside that plant. but let me ask you this. we've been hearing anecdotally that supplies are not reaching the front lines fast enough which can be detrimental to those holding the russians back. what are you hearing? >> i know that the supplies are what ukrainian army here needs most. and they are coming. because from the first day of the war, ukrainian army here on the east is using the supplies and especially the supplies from the american allies to ukraine to counteract and thwart russian forces. for example russian troops now don't use fighter jets as they did previously because they are afraid that they will be shot down on the territory of ukraine. and you of course know the cases when ukrainian forces have captured the russian soldiers and officers and some high russian forces were eliminated. and that is all possible because the aid and supplies from united states, britain, canada are coming here. and ukraine will not be able to go on just what we have. so they are using the help and aid that ukrainians troops that are getting through all this time. >> maria, appreciate you taking this time to speak to us from kharkiv. to stay safe please. thanks for taking the time. >> thank you. now a former u.s. marine is one of the latest victims on the battlefield here in ukraine. according to his family, he was killed fighting alongside ukrainian forces on monday. the 22-year-old worked for a private military contracting company. cancel's mother says he went to ukraine because he believes in its call. millions of ukrainians have been displaced since the war started but one is reunited with family in kyiv, a 12-year-old girl taken to russian occupied territory after bombs killed her father. matt rivers has her harrowing story. >> reporter: for kyra, her new ipad is everything. she's 12 after all. but the shiny screen is also a welcome distraction from an ordeal no 12-year-old should ever have to endure. because just a few weeks ago the young ukrainian wasn't safe like she is now in kyiv but in a hospital run by russian-backed separatists respect forcibly separated from her family. her dad was still alive, her mom died just after she was born. and when russian bombs started to fall, they sheltered in a neighbor's basement she calls. but they hit the house where we were staying, she says. we were buried in the cellar. and the rescuers took us out of the wreckage. her dad did not emerge, she told us. now an orphan, she started to walk to try to find safety amidst chaos. and then another explosion from a mine. my friends saw something on the ground, she says, and she hit it accidentally with her boot. the military came after the explosions and took us to the hospital because we were bleeding. but in some ways her journey was just beginning. in the chaos she was picked up by soldiers she says spoke russian and was taken to an area in donetsk. she says they took shrapnel out of my ear. i screamed and cried a lot. it was shortly after that cnn first learned about and roeportd kyra's story because russia paraded it on state tv. state propagandists showed images of her in a donetsk hospital and said that she was being treated well. convinced that she was being mistreated, her family went public with her story and it worked. a deal between russia and ukraine allowed her grandfather to travel to russia and bring her back to kyiv where she told us what russian state tv did not. it is a bad hospital there, the food there is bad, the nurses scream at you, the bed is bent like this. there wasn't enough space for all of us inside. none of that came out on russian state tv. her injuries have largely healed now, though she will stay in the hospital a little longer. it was there that someone gave her that ipad. after a presidential visit came bearing gifts this week. she didn't love all that attention though. for now she says that she just wants to see her cat and spend time with her grandfather recovering from the horrors of war one game at a time. matt rivers, cnn, kyiv, ukraine. >> and we have much more of the breaking news coverage just ahead. for now, let's head to max foster in london. dozens of people were injured in jerusalem earlier today. at least 42 people were hurt. hundreds of rioters began a violent disturbance at the compound and two people were arrested. tensions have been high during the holy month of ramadan. and clashes have occurred every friday. amazon is getting a bad review from its shareholders, this the u.s. economy unexpectedly shrank in the first quarter of this year. gdp was down 1.4% compared to the same period last year. that is far from the nearly 7% growth that we saw at the end of 2021. while one bad quarter doesn't make a recession, two quarters do. and u.s. president biden says the signs don't point to another recession though. >> well, i'm not concerned about a recession. i mean, you are always concerned about a recession. but the gdp, you know, falling 1 1.4%. but here is the deal. we're always last quarter consumer spending and business investment and residential investment increased at significant rates both for leisure as well as hard products. >> after years of being a tech juggernaut, amazon has delivered a dismal profit report. the company reported nearly $4 billion in losses, that is far from the $4 billion profit that analysts had been expecting. amazon blames most of the losses on its investment this electronic automaker whose stock has been plummeting for months now. amazon stock plunged 9% in after hours trading. selina wang is joining us now. what is going on with the tech stocks? >> reporter: not only was it a disappointing quarter for amazon, it also delivered a very bleak outlook. right now amazon is facing multiple headwinds, that major boon to its business that it had during the pandemic is starting to fade with online sales falling in the first three months of the year. expenses are also raising as amazon is offering higher wages to try to attract more workers. on top of that, you have higher fuel costs which makes it more expensive to deliver amazon packages. and on top of that, we also saw the major hit it took from its investment in that electric carmaker rivian. so for the quarter it reported a loss, first in seven years. but there were some bright spots including amazon web services, that division jumped nearly 40%, more than analysts had expected. but overall, this outlook that we are seeing from amazon, this challenging environment, it does reflect broader industry challenges from the pandemic, from the war in ukraine, including inflationary and supply chain issues. for instance in apple's earnings, they delivered a strong revenue, strong jump of 9% year on year, but still during that earnings call, executives were warning about this grim macroeconomic environment including covid-related shutdowns in china, chip shortages, all of that making it harder for apple to meet customer demand. cnn tim cook said that he is more concerned about the supply issues than actual customer demand potentially dropping off. right now in china the country is dealing with covid outbreaks across the country. some 27 chinese cities are under some degree of lockdown which is impacting around 18 on million people that is more than half the u.s. population. >> selina wang, thank you very much indeed. lack of discipline, bad coordination and tanks that have had a fatal design flaw are the signs that russia's invasion in steel plant could begin anytime now. the ukrainian president's office says the operation is planned for sometime today but offered no further details. it is believed hundreds of civilians are trapped inside the sprawling complex which has endured relentless russian shelling for weeks now. meanwhile ukrainian officials are condemning a barrage of russian strikes on the capital. these are new images of the arrester math. ukraine's president says that five missiles struck kyiv while the secretary-general was visiting. and in washington the fu.s. president is asking congress for more funding for ukraine. the bulk of that would go toward military assistance. russia's renewed assault on eastern ukraine may not be going as well as moscow hoped. a senior u.s. defense official says russia's military progress in the donetsk region is slow and uneven. and oren liebermann reports. >> reporter: near the city of kyiv, a russian tank flaw laid bear, turrets ss separated frome body of the tank. and it is a design flaw in russian tanks that ukrainian forces have exploited. >> if the turret is penetrated, particularly the javelin from top, that exposed ammunition will cook off immediately, it will go high order, and the whole exposed ammunition program inside the turret will blow. >> reporter: russia's invasion of ukraine has revealed to the u.s. and the word many problems within one of the world's largest militaries. the kremlin has tried to hide its losses from its own people. but yooukraine's messaging has cranked out videos of the tanks being destroyed. >> the russians have significant mechanized capability, but as you look at the techniques and procedures that they use, they were not very effective. so you question the training, the leadership at the noncommission level, noncommission officer level, and their ability to provide basic logistics to a force that size. >> reporter: russian forces are now focusing on the donbas region where a senior u.s. defense official says that they have made some progress. they are trying to fix many of the problems that plagued the early invasion using their advantage in firepower and trying to coordinate air and ground attacks. but officials say they don't appear to have learned those lessons yet. the performance of vladimir putin's military has surprised the u.s. >> we did not do as well in terms of predicting the military challenges that he has encountered with his own military. >> reporter: with the war now in its third month, no one is talking anymore about it ending quickly. russia is attempting to regroup with a new goal this mind in southeast ukraine. with u.s. and western support, ukraine is bracing for a long brutal fight that the biden administration has framed is much bigger than about one country. a senior defense official says that the russian forces are trying to learn from the mistakes that they made early on in the invasion, mistakes we saw carried out multiple times around kyiv, but they have yet to determine if they will be able to do so. they are still seeing some of the same logistics and sustainment problems and one of the key issues that will be very hard to fix is the morale issues. a senior defense official says that the russian conscripts come in very amped up feasting on russian prop began propaganda only to find out that the battle is going very differently. and let's now go to nada bashir in london. how much progress is russia making, and how does it impact the dynamics of the battle? >> you heard there in oren's reporting that this is deemed to be small and uneven in terms of the progress observed by u.s. and western officials. we have seen russia doubling down on its efforts in the southeastern region of ukraine, heavy bombardment there. and russia appears to have been learning thes will ons of the challenges it faced in the first phase of its invasion of ukraine. particularly in terms of the supply issues. we saw significant challenges faced by the russian armed forces particularly in terms of fuel, armament, food and medicine for troops and convoys. that was a significant challenge for the kremlin. and also in terms of the command issues and of course coordinating those attention. according to u.s. officials, the coordination of land and air attacks has been somewhat improved. and crucially what we've heard from western officials is that the kremlin appears to be prepared to throw as many troops as it will take to achieve its objectives in southeastern ukraine. now, although that has been noted by several western officials, russia is still facing significant challenges. you heard in the reporting there from oren that russia has lost nearly 600 tanks. and we continue to see the all-important issue of low morale amongst the troops. particularly according to western officials in terms of the poor training and practical experience amongst the lower ranks. and we have learned that the death toll within the russian armed forces in ukraine stands at least in the thousands. there was a long period of time where they were trying to hide the death toll but now peskov acknowledges significant losses in the armed forces. >> nada, thanks very much for that update. and mcdonald's temporarily closed restaurants in russia and here in ukraine, the fast food company says that the move cost it $127 million in the last quarter. part of the loss is because it continues to pay the tens of thousands of employees in both countries. but most of the financial hit, $100 million of it to be exact, is from having to get rid of food. mcdonald's say the restaurants in russia and ukraine accounted for 9% of revenue in 2021. now the city of mariupol is all but you raruined. but those inside the stealel plt is holding on. we'll hear under heavy bombardment from russia. a "new york times" reporter spoke with some inside the plant and shared with me what he'd heard. >> the situation continues to be grim obviously, these rocket attacks and heavy bombardment that we saw yesterday continues to drive them further and further into a corner. the situation was already becoming untenable, they are out of ammunition -- running out of ammunition, running out of food and water. what i'm told, it caused a careful-in at a field hospital, one of the commanders say it is impossible to say how many people might have been killed or injured in that attack. he was showing me video that he had taken from inside that field hospital a few days ago in which there are dozens of wounded laid out on the floor, some of them with absolutely gruesome injuries. they are out of medicines, running out of anesthesia to carry out surgeries. they do have some clinicians, some doctors, some surgeons still on staff. >> and i think this is really important, explain why they simply just don't walk out. what are the fears here? >> one of the fears is that they don't trust the russian government to honor the rules of war. they feel, many of them, the ones that i've spoken to, that if they were hand themselves over to russian forces and just surrender, they will be killed or executed. russia has in the past offered terms of surrender to ukrainian troops only to turn around and kill them later. and so there is no faith in any kind of russian deal at this point. the soldiers are willing to negotiate some kind of a deal that allow the civilians at least to get out, but so far any sort of green corridor that they attempted to negotiate hasn't been brought to fruition. >> and of course we've heard in the last hour or so from ukrainian officials that an operation is planned for today to allow civilians inside the azovstal steel plant out. of course we don't have anymore details. as soon as we have, we'll bring them to you. but potentially some very good news indeed. much more ahead on our breaking news coverage of the war in ukraine at the top of the hour. in the meantime, i'll send it back to max. >> perhaps a light at the end of the tunnel for many people in shanghai hard hit by covid and the lockdown correspond to city health officials, more than 12 million people in shanghai live in low risk areas and can now leave their homes. that is millions more than just mine days ago. fus officials say almost all of the almost 15,000 cases were reported in shanghai. and i'm joined by steven jiang who is in beijing for us now. >> reporter: and as you can see, i'm surrounded by plain clothes agents here at this testing site. just to show you the political sensitivity of this issue. you know, we talked about how the chinese authorities have been doubling down on their zero covid policy. this is really a test of their political loyalty because this policy and its strict enforcement come from the very top, xi jinping has put hit personal stamp of approval on this policy. for many officials not only they cannot change or tweak it, they have to really reinforce it because this is about their political future. they are fearful of political consequences which is also why you see all these agents are just surrounding me. they were trying to stop us from going live here even though we are perfectly fine in public and not interfering with the testing site. this is one of the many testing sites in the city because the authorities here have ordered most of the capital cities 20 plus million people to go through three rounds of mandatory tests this week. and you can see still some people lining up behind me to get their third test because that is part of the requirement. but it is very interesting because obviously so far the case numbers in bei bei jink still relatively low, but they have closed all schools and a growing number of major hospitals being shut down as well. so all of that is really rather ominous sign. but still right now in the city, we are still seeing mostly things being semi normal, shops are still open, supply seems to be ample. and people are getting worried and stocking up because of what happened in shanghai. a lot of people have been reminded that you cannot really trust what the officials say because of the fiasco in shanghai. >> and we can see the officials around you, the police around you, obviously they have been trying to interfere with the coverage. but everything behind you looks pretty ordered and organized. what specifically are those police around you concerned about? >> well, that is our question as well. we are obviously not interfering with their testing process. we are in very -- actually, rather empty place here. a testing site again, very confined area, not far from the office. and so i think in general they are just considering the issue so sensitive that they just don't in a way want -- they don't want foreign media coverage of anything related to their covid strategy right now. especially i guess with all the negative reporting out of shanghai. >> so concerned about the images, there is not a wider issue with you, you know, you don't feel more threatened than that, just trying to stop the coverage? >> reporter: yeah, as far as i'm concerned i don't see what is wrong with us reporting from here. we were just -- just trying to do a live shot and not even interviewing people. but again, this is just more than a health care issue, a public health issue, it is always a political issue. i think that that is of course something that they are increasingly concerned about. because when we are talking about lockdowns, it is not just beijing or shanghai, it is affecting at least 180 million people across the country. that is half of the entire u.s. population. and remember many people in smaller cities have been living under lockdown for months with very little outside attention with no end in sight. >> we got the live shot done. thank you very much for bringing that to us. very difficult conditions with all those people surrounding you. thank you. weather is contributing to a fires to spread uncontrollably this weekend. officials say more than a million acres have been scorched in the region since january. derek van dam looks at the threat. >> yeah, that's right, max. in fact we have several weather headlines to discuss from severe weather to fire weather and just talking about how much acreage has been burned gives us a good idea of the difficult conditions. on average to date, we should only experience about 600,000 acres of charred landscape and of course we've seen significantly more than that. here is one of the large active fires still ongoing, that is coming out of the u.s. state of nebraska. we have 14 active large fires burning across eight separate states, many focused in on an area known as the great basin or the four corners region. there is new mexico, arizona. this is just two examples of fires. we have seen some improvement, the tunnel now 89% contained. the canyon fire outside of santa fe, 33% containment. but you can see the thousands of acres that have burned with just those two fires alone. once again, a recipe for disaster today unfolding before our eyes. we have an extreme fire risk from southeast colorado into portions of kansas once again strong winds, warm temperatures, very low relative humidities. those are all the factors that the storm prediction center or the national weather service puts in when they decide to put up these red flag warnings advising people to take care. now, look at the winds alone, we anticipate these to gust anywhere from 50 to 60 kilometers per hour through this afternoon and evening starting to get a little bit better as we go forward in time through the course of the weekend. and the other weather headline is the severe weather. look at that shading of red, this is
