this was an attack on the city of new york. after the omicron wave, what experts say could come next this year. >> i do think that if we do it right, we are going to have a 2022 in which covid doesn't dominate our lives so much. >> reporter: also tonight, a virginia mom charged after threatening a school board with violence if her children were forced to wear masks. >> i will bring every single gun loaded and ready -- and finally, what we know about arnold schwarzenegger's multi-vehicle crash friday in los angeles. i'm pamela brown in washington. you are in the "cnn newsroom" on this saturday. we begin tonight with breaking news out of the uk. s that where a new government report says vladimir putin is looking to install a pro-russian government in ukraine as the kremlin considers whether to invade and possibly occupy that country. a memo from the british foreign office says moscow may be considering a former ukrainian politician as a candidate to lead the puppet government. tensions between russia and ukraine have been growing for months as moscow built up a sizable troop presence at the border leaving many to fear an invasion was coming. cnn's nic robertson is in moscow. what more do we know with this? >> this is the british government saying that the kremlin is currently considering to install a pro-russian leadership in ukraine to replace the existing one as they are towards a pro forma, pro-russian politician looking towards to install as the new leader of ukraine. now, cnn has reached out and contacted him and he said, look, there is no comment to make here, pause i am on a russian sanction lest. so his implication is how could i possibly be doing something for the russian government. how could they probably have me? pause they already have me under sanctions. the british government has gone further. they've named four other people, a former prime minister, two former deputy prime ministers and former security official who may say they have been in contact with russian intelligence operatives. those operatives the british government says are those planning the possible invasion of ukraine. so this is very strong language, a very specific naming by the british government here. the british foreign secretary says this gives an indication of the thinking that is going an and assessing at the moment? yeah, i spoke to a british security force around asked, why are you putting this out there, all the information you know. i was told the strategy is basically to send the message to russia and also to the public, look, we know what you are up to and to get out on the front foot as this person said. in the meantime, all this is going on, the u.s. embassy has sent its first security assistance to ukraine, some 200,000 lethal aid, including ammunition for front halloween defenders. is there any concern that can provoke russia even more on lavrov's invasion unless the u.s. goes to bed with ukraine, it doesn't happen? >> this is coming from the united states. there was video footage of this in the airport in ukraine when it landed. so there is a big effort on to show a puppet show of this we are'ing in lockstep by the british government naming these fwroup of peogroup of people an them on notice that they believe what they are planning here. it is a part of a package to send a message to president putin to make him think twice about the potential of invasion. it's not only that u.s. military aid arrived today. we know the estoneian government is sending jaff lenvelin missil. the stinger missile system put against helicopters and low-flying jets. they are announcing the czech government will send ammunition for artillery. the german government announced they will send a field hospital, a military field hospital, so all of these things, it is very public and it's done with that precise effort. because they know that this is the moment president putin is israeli c isr israeli really considering what nay are putting in place as what they put up will be the problems down the road, if he does that. >> nic robertson in moscow, thank you very much. the news information from the british government compounds the already growing tension between russia and ukraine. so where do things no from here? what does this mean for the united states? joining me now, retired army leiutenant general and cnn analyst mark hertling and josh rogan, general, let's start with you, what is your take on this report from the uk? >> it's a great report, pamela. what i'll say is russia uses multiple types of covert and over attacks and maneuver option, that they hope will cause divisiveness in any country they are looking to persuade to to or influence to to whatever they want to do. none of this is new or unusual. most countries in europe, monte ne negro, lithuania will tell you that they have had experience in these types of areas. without divulging details, i used to receive intelligence about this kind of thing as the commander of u.s. army europe. and your question a minute ago about why are they putting this out there now? it's a great question. it's on the mark. because intelligence communities used to keep these things close hold. but now this kind of information, this publication of information is critically important to fighting back against what russia is doing. because they will continue to use these types of operations to influence. you know, the main issue of an attack that we have all been concerned about is just one of the many things that they can do. there is asymmetric warfare, covert replacement of ukraineian officials, air campaign, ground moo numaneuvers. that is what we need to worry about russia is trying to influence not only ukraine but nato and the u.s. as well. >> i am curious if you are seeing when you look at a annexation of crimea and how countries responded to that and chuing the u.s. and how they're responding to what's going on, on the ukrainian border if russia. do you see a difference like the uk laying out the information they have on this puppet pamela. actually i see biggest difference on the russian side f. 2014, as hard as it was, they never went to kiev and enstalled a rump government with a fake president. which is what this intelligence points as they are planning to do. of course, it may be one of many plans. it doesn't mean that's exactly what they will do. the plan that they have a plan to occupy the country means their tolerance for pain might be a lot higher than the biden administration calculated. that's just see ukrainians and people in washington, calling for the administration to to more, why is this the first ammunition? we have been in this crisis how many months? we just started dropping off ammunition? i think there is a lot of people on the ground saying, listen, we don't know what putin will do, the best way to stop the war is increasing aid now, increasing the sanctions now. once he occupies kiev, even though the whole world will know this is a crazy stunt to snuff out ukrainian democracy, it will be too late. if it is to install a government and tell everyone to pound sand. i don't think it will change buns they've done it. i think we have a lot of reasons to be alarmed. >> general hertling, do you think the fact that russia is putting together this puppet government, does that tell you an invasion is imminent in. >> no, i'm sure that they want to influence ukraine's action. i'm not sure the intelligence that's been passed through the british agency is complete with a length with a puppet government. instead, i would suggest that it has the do with replacing officials in a very covert manner. so that there is more intelligence coming from inside ukraine back to the russian government. you know, it would be very difficult to try and completely overthrow ukraine's central government if cn kiev. you are talking about a president and parliament and ministries. but the russians certainly could try and influence intelligence passing and use part of what they call moscow robots, the reduction of intelligence when you crane by placing individuals in key positions. that's something russia has done before. i don't think they're considering right now the replacement of the entire ukrainian fost in kiev. >> i want to go to the statement we just got if from the u.s. national security council expressing solidarity with you krave ukraine the ukrainian people have the sovereign right to determine their own future and we stand with our elected partners in ukraine. josh rogan, quickly, if you would, what is at stake for americans, for those that might look at this and say, that's over there. that's between russia and ukraine. there is a lot at stake, though, for america, right in. >> that's right. what happens in ukraine does not stay in ukraine, not to mention the fact that if there is a war in ukraine and if they occupy kiev that would be a bloody pandemic and reverberate through europe. the president says democracy can be snuffed out in 2022. that's a green light for other auto kratz like let's say xi jinping to believe the america around the west has no stomach to fight back against this. so i think what you see is a domino effect. that would have repercussions first in europe and around the world. we can say, well, that's over there. it's really too late by the time democracy has been snuffed out. in the end, it's very hard to restore them. once we let one go, it will fought be the last. >> josh rogan, general mark hertling, thank you very much. >> thank you. when we come back, after the omicron wave, what experts say could come next. former cdc director dr. tom freeman is here live. then live inside the january 6th investigation on donald trump's reported plan to seize voting machines. also ahead for you tonight, how a frustrated nurse is calling it quits over covid and hitting the road as a long hall trucker. and then have you seen a virginia mom charged with threatening a school board over mask mandates and class? should america follow suit and relax covid restrictions? >> pamela, if you are vaccinated, covid does not have to to him nate your life. and that's the bottom line here. the more of us who are vaccinated o, the fewer deaths there will be, the fewer hospitalizations and the less disruptions to our economy, our society, our education. the challenge is that there are still far too many people not vaccinated and we need to be adaptive. as the virus changes, we need to change him omicron is new and different. on the one hand, it doesn' cause nearly as severe disease as delta did. on the other hand, if you compare it to flu, we could have ten times more cases of omicron in an average week than we have in the flu season. that's why you are seeing the overwhelmed hospitals and large numbers of deaths. >> so what do you think about the uk making this move? do you think it's premature? >> i wouldn't want to comment on their situation. let's focus on what we need to do here. fundamentally, it's continue to vaccinate. if you are updated on your vaccine, you are likely to be very ill and mask up. where the virus is spreading indoors. masks protect you and other people and can keep our kids in school learning. then to make judgments based on your rick and what's important to you about what you want to do and do that safely. covid does not have to dominate our lives if we are vaccinated. >> i want to ask you about the cdc. do you think the cdc should change the definition of fully vaccinated to include boosters rather than promote the benefit of boosters? >> i think we need to stop talking about fully vaccinated. we need to discuss up to date with your vaccination series. that's what we do for kids. are you up to date? up to date means if it's been six months since your last mrna vaccine or two months since your j&j vaccine, you need to get boosted. then you will be up to date and have good protection. your body will be prepared for what the virus throws at us. it is true there is good protection even without boosters. there is new data out that proves the vaccine is remarkabliesque itch at preventing hospitalization and death and even more effective if you are up to date. we deep know what's going to happen next. there may be another variant. it may fade. delta may come back. there may be a variant that requires another vaccine. we may find out the vaccination is good enough to protect against severe illness for many years. we just don't know. as the science changes, the recommendations need to change. as we learn more, we can protect people better. but stay up to date with your vaccines. mask up and be careful and do what's important to you as safely as possible? do you think the u.s. has hit its peak with omicron? >> omicron is on the way down on average. but there is still parts of the country that are very hard hit. it's more of a flash flood than a wave and that flood is just cresting in some places and going down in others. we do expect it will go down pretty quick lip. still, you got kind of the large number of patients in hospitals and sadly the large number of deaths. with omicron, it is true unlike with delta and the earlier variants, that a lot of people are hospitalized and a lot of people very ill with it are not sick from omicron. they are sick for other reasons. because there is so much omicron in the u.s. today that happen to only have omicron in their system. there may be 30 million people in the u.s. today with omicron. >> wow, that's a lot. i was one of the millions in the u.s. just a couple weeks ago. it was actually, it was rough for a couple of days. it certainly felt flu-like, even though i had my full course of the vaccinations with the booster. my husband and kids didn't get it. as a parent, i was worried about my kids getting it, they're under 5. what do you tell parents that have kids that can't be vaccinated? >> this is 21 of the reasons that we have to recognize, we're all in it together. the more we can tamp down the spread, people who have oorgen trance plants, susceptible, hospitals, healthcare workers, we don't want healthcare to be so stressed if you have a heart attack or a stroke or a broken leg, you need to give birth in the hospital, there is not a comfortable situation there for you to be cared for safely. that's why it's on all of us to get vaccinated. pacific up, be sensible about reducing spread where there is explosive spread. i think within a few weeks, omicron will have faded. we don't know what is coming next. we do know, the better prepared we are individually with vaccination. as a society with a stronger system to track and respond to changes in the virus, the safer we'll all be. we will be able to go through a 2022 without having their lives dominated by covid. >> that is the hope. a few weeks omicron will have faded as you say, thank you very much. >> thank you. and the pandemic has taken a hol on nurses across the world. one canadian hospital nurse decide it was time for a career change. so she decided to join her friend for a life on the road as a long haul trucker. leah gorman said she loved being a nurse, staffing shortages and lack of advancement were too much to continue. she says the problems facing nurses existed before the pandemic and covid is showing the real stress of the situation. well, right now the january 6th committee is sifting through hundreds of documents that donald trump wanted to keep secret. so what are they learning? what about trump, himself? >> well, again, you know, we're not flagging in advance where the investigation is going. i will tell you that as the lead imp impeachment manager back in february, i sent a letter directly to donald trump inviting him to come and testify. there was much complaint from him in his camp about how his due process rights were being violated, of course, the heart of due process is the ability to be heard. so if donald trump wanted to be heard, he had every opportunity to come forward to speak. i think 99.9% repeating of the american people would come forward if they were accused of inciting a insurrection or violentines against the government. and certainly to tell other people to go in and fight like hell, put their bodies on the line. you should show up and testify about what exactly you had in mind and what your plans were for the day? >> well, without speaking in his individual case, we are very interested in learning about this effort to get individuals in various states to claim to be the official presidential electors. now, of the seven states that we know about now, a couple of those bans of people refuse to actually proclaim themselves the official electors and wanted to describe themselves as electors in waiting or something like that. but in the other cases, they did present themselves as the official electors. and that, of course, raises pro found problems about fraud on the constitution and a fraud on the american people. we believe that this was an effort to inject more confusion that would become a pre text for rejecting, rebuffing electoral college votes, returning them to the legislatures as they were urging pence to do. this would have lowered biden's vote total from 306 to below 270, if they had taken just those three states, arizona, georgia and pennsylvania. at that point it would have been kicked immediately into the house of representatives for a contingent election, which would have been further terrain for them given the way we vote under the 12th amendment in a contingent election. >> congressman raskin, stay with us. after the break, we will talk about your new book, unthinkable, trauma, truths and the denials of american democracy. ♪ what a wonderful world ♪ ♪ ♪ wow, we're crunching tons of polygons here! what's going on? this was an attack on the city of new york. after the omicron wave, what experts say could come next this year. >> i do think that if we do it right, we are going to have a 2022 in which covid doesn't dominate our lives so much. >> reporter: also tonight, a virginia mom charged after threatening a school board with violence if her children were forced to wear masks. >> i will bring every single gun loaded and ready -- and finally, what we know about arnold schwarzenegger's multi-vehicle crash friday in los angeles. i'm pamela brown in washington. you are in the "cnn newsroom" on this saturday. we begin tonight with breaking news out of the uk. s that where a new government report says vladimir putin is looking to install a pro-russian government in ukraine as the kremlin considers whether to invade and possibly occupy that country. a memo from the british foreign office says moscow may be considering a former ukrainian politician as a candidate to lead the puppet government. tensions between russia and ukraine have been growing for months as moscow built up a sizable troop presence at the border leaving many to fear an invasion was coming. cnn's nic robertson is in moscow. what more do we know with this? >> this is the british government saying that the kremlin is currently considering to install a pro-russian leadership in ukraine to replace the existing one as they are towards a pro forma, pro-russian politician looking towards to install as the new leader of ukraine. now, cnn has reached out and contacted him and he said, look, there is no comment to make here, pause i am on a russian sanction lest. so his implication is how could i possibly be doing something for the russian government. how could they probably have me? pause they already have me under sanctions. the british government has gone further. they've named four other people, a former prime minister, two former deputy prime ministers and former security official who may say they have been in contact with russian intelligence operatives. those operatives the british government says are those planning the possible invasion of ukraine. so this is very strong language, a very specific naming by the british government here. the british foreign secretary says this gives an indication of the thinking that is going an and assessing at the moment? yeah, i spoke to a british security force around asked, why are you putting this out there, all the information you know. i was told the strategy is basically to send the message to russia and also to the public, look, we know what you are up to and to get out on the front foot as this person said. in the meantime, all this is going on, the u.s. embassy has sent its first security assistance to ukraine, some 200,000 lethal aid, including ammunition for front halloween defenders. is there any concern that can provoke russia even more on lavrov's invasion unless the u.s. goes to bed with ukraine, it doesn't happen? >> this is coming from the united states. there was video footage of this in the airport in ukraine when it landed. so there is a big effort on to show a puppet show of this we are'ing in lockstep by the british government naming these fwroup of peogroup of people an them on notice that they believe what they are planning here. it is a part of a package to send a message to president putin to make him think twice about the potential of invasion. it's not only that u.s. military aid arrived today. we know the estoneian government is sending jaff lenvelin missil. the stinger missile system put against helicopters and low-flying jets. they are announcing the czech government will send ammunition for artillery. the german government announced they will send a field hospital, a military field hospital, so all of these things, it is very public and it's done with that precise effort. because they know that this is the moment president putin is israeli c isr israeli really considering what nay are putting in place as what they put up will be the problems down the road, if he does that. >> nic robertson in moscow, thank you very much. the news information from the british government compounds the already growing tension between russia and ukraine. so where do things no from here? what does this mean for the united states? joining me now, retired army leiutenant general and cnn analyst mark hertling and josh rogan, general, let's start with you, what is your take on this report from the uk? >> it's a great report, pamela. what i'll say is russia uses multiple types of covert and over attacks and maneuver option, that they hope will cause divisiveness in any country they are looking to persuade to to or influence to to whatever they want to do. none of this is new or unusual. most countries in europe, monte ne negro, lithuania will tell you that they have had experience in these types of areas. without divulging details, i used to receive intelligence about this kind of thing as the commander of u.s. army europe. and your question a minute ago about why are they putting this out there now? it's a great question. it's on the mark. because intelligence communities used to keep these things close hold. but now this kind of information, this publication of information is critically important to fighting back against what russia is doing. because they will continue to use these types of operations to influence. you know, the main issue of an attack that we have all been concerned about is just one of the many things that they can do. there is asymmetric warfare, covert replacement of ukraineian officials, air campaign, ground moo numaneuvers. that is what we need to worry about russia is trying to influence not only ukraine but nato and the u.s. as well. >> i am curious if you are seeing when you look at a annexation of crimea and how countries responded to that and chuing the u.s. and how they're responding to what's going on, on the ukrainian border if russia. do you see a difference like the uk laying out the information they have on this puppet pamela. actually i see biggest difference on the russian side f. 2014, as hard as it was, they never went to kiev and enstalled a rump government with a fake president. which is what this intelligence points as they are planning to do. of course, it may be one of many plans. it doesn't mean that's exactly what they will do. the plan that they have a plan to occupy the country means their tolerance for pain might be a lot higher than the biden administration calculated. that's just see ukrainians and people in washington, calling for the administration to to more, why is this the first ammunition? we have been in this crisis how many months? we just started dropping off ammunition? i think there is a lot of people on the ground saying, listen, we don't know what putin will do, the best way to stop the war is increasing aid now, increasing the sanctions now. once he occupies kiev, even though the whole world will know this is a crazy stunt to snuff out ukrainian democracy, it will be too late. if it is to install a government and tell everyone to pound sand. i don't think it will change buns they've done it. i think we have a lot of reasons to be alarmed. >> general hertling, do you think the fact that russia is putting together this puppet government, does that tell you an invasion is imminent in. >> no, i'm sure that they want to influence ukraine's action. i'm not sure the intelligence that's been passed through the british agency is complete with a length with a puppet government. instead, i would suggest that it has the do with replacing officials in a very covert manner. so that there is more intelligence coming from inside ukraine back to the russian government. you know, it would be very difficult to try and completely overthrow ukraine's central government if cn kiev. you are talking about a president and parliament and ministries. but the russians certainly could try and influence intelligence passing and use part of what they call moscow robots, the reduction of intelligence when you crane by placing individuals in key positions. that's something russia has done before. i don't think they're considering right now the replacement of the entire ukrainian fost in kiev. >> i want to go to the statement we just got if from the u.s. national security council expressing solidarity with you krave ukraine the ukrainian people have the sovereign right to determine their own future and we stand with our elected partners in ukraine. josh rogan, quickly, if you would, what is at stake for americans, for those that might look at this and say, that's over there. that's between russia and ukraine. there is a lot at stake, though, for america, right in. >> that's right. what happens in ukraine does not stay in ukraine, not to mention the fact that if there is a war in ukraine and if they occupy kiev that would be a bloody pandemic and reverberate through europe. the president says democracy can be snuffed out in 2022. that's a green light for other auto kratz like let's say xi jinping to believe the america around the west has no stomach to fight back against this. so i think what you see is a domino effect. that would have repercussions first in europe and around the world. we can say, well, that's over there. it's really too late by the time democracy has been snuffed out. in the end, it's very hard to restore them. once we let one go, it will fought be the last. >> josh rogan, general mark hertling, thank you very much. >> thank you. when we come back, after the omicron wave, what experts say could come next. former cdc director dr. tom freeman is here live. then live inside the january 6th investigation on donald trump's reported plan to seize voting machines. also ahead for you tonight, how a frustrated nurse is calling it quits over covid and hitting the road as a long hall trucker. and then have you seen a virginia mom charged with threatening a school board over mask mandates and class? we'll be right back. >> i will bring every single gun loaded and ready -- with chase security features, guidance and convenience, banking feels good. chase. make more of what's yours. my mental health was much better. my mind was in a good place. but my body was telling a different story. i felt all people saw were my uncontrolled movements. some mental health meds can cause tardive dyskinesia, or td, and it's unlikely to improve without treatment. ingrezza is a prescription medicine to treat adults with td movements in the face and body. it's the only treatment for td that's one pill, once-daily, with or without food. ingrezza 80 mg is proven to reduce td movements in 7 out of 10 people. people taking ingrezza can stay on their current dose of most mental health meds. don't take ingrezza if you're allergic to any of its ingredients. ingrezza may cause serious side effects, including sleepiness. don't drive, operate heavy machinery, or do other dangerous activities until you know how ingrezza affects you. other serious side effects include potential heart rhythm problems and abnormal movements. it's nice people focus more on me. ask your doctor about ingrezza, #1 prescribed for td. learn how you could pay as little as zero dollars at ingrezza.com. mm. (vo) this year, t-mobile for business is here to help you hit the ground running. when you switch to t-mobile and bring your own device, we'll pay off your phone up to $800. you can keep your phone. keep your number. and get your employees connected on the largest and fastest 5g network. plus, we give you $200 in facebook ads on us! so you can reach more customers, create more opportunities, and make this the best year for your business yet. visit your local t-mobile store today. amid all the positive reports that new covid cases appear to be leveling off in the northeast and booster shots cut hospitalization by 80%, there is also this. almost 2500 americans were reported friday to have died of covid. that is just one day. the virus has now claimed more than 864,000 people here in the u.s., since the pandemic began two years ago. take that in. meantime, we have this news tonight. uk prime minister boris johnson risked the mandatory face coverings in public and covid passports will be dropped starting thursday. former cdc director joins me now. he is the president and ceo of resolve to save lives. dr. freeman, freight to see you. so it sounds like the uk is saying it's time to learn to live with this. like we do with the flu. what do you think? should america follow suit and relax covid restrictions? >> pamela, if you are vaccinated, covid does not have to to him nate your life. and that's the bottom line here. the more of us who are vaccinated o, the fewer deaths there will be, the fewer hospitalizations and the less disruptions to our economy, our society, our education. the challenge is that there are still far too many people not vaccinated and we need to be adaptive. as the virus changes, we need to change him omicron is new and different. on the one hand, it doesn' cause nearly as severe disease as delta did. on the other hand, if you compare it to flu, we could have ten times more cases of omicron in an average week than we have in the flu season. that's why you are seeing the overwhelmed hospitals and large numbers of deaths. >> so what do you think about the uk making this move? do you think it's premature? >> i wouldn't want to comment on their situation. let's focus on what we need to do here. fundamentally, it's continue to vaccinate. if you are updated on your vaccine, you are likely to be very ill and mask up. where the virus is spreading indoors. masks protect you and other people and can keep our kids in school learning. then to make judgments based on your rick and what's important to you about what you want to do and do that safely. covid does not have to dominate our lives if we are vaccinated. >> i want to ask you about the cdc. do you think the cdc should change the definition of fully vaccinated to include boosters rather than promote the benefit of boosters? >> well, without speaking in his individual case, we are very interested in learning about this effort to get individuals in various states to claim to be the official presidential electors. now, of the seven states that we know about now, a couple of those bans of people refuse to actually proclaim themselves the official electors and wanted to describe themselves as electors in waiting or something like that. but in the other cases, they did present themselves as the official electors. and that, of course, raises pro found problems about fraud on the constitution and a fraud on the american people. we believe that this was an effort to inject more confusion that would become a pre text for rejecting, rebuffing electoral college votes, returning them to the legislatures as they were urging pence to do. this would have lowered biden's vote total from 306 to below 270, if they had taken just those three states, arizona, georgia and pennsylvania. at that point it would have been kicked immediately into the house of representatives for a contingent election, which would have been further terrain for them given the way we vote under the 12th amendment in a contingent election. >> congressman raskin, stay with us. after the break, we will talk about your new book, unthinkable, trauma, truths and the denials of american democracy. ♪ what a wonderful world ♪ ♪ ♪ wow, we're crunching tons of polygons here! what's going on?
