last week. there are also new outbreaks in professional sports, from hockey to basketball and football. today the cleveland browns announced six players, including quarterback baker mayfield are now on the reserve covid-19 list. this is after the teams had a coach test positive, and news from earlier this week that more than 60 nfl players are infected, according to a league source, and that was just on monday and tuesday alone. let's get right to our senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen. elizabeth, this is starting to feel a lot like the early days of the pandemic, sadly. what more can you tell us about colleges and universities and nfl and other outbreaks? >> it really does feel like deja vu. let's look at universities who have moved classes or exams on online. middlebury college, princeton, depaul, southern new hampshire, cornell university. new york university is strongly encouraging professors to move their exams to online. they say they're seeing an acceleration of covid cases, and this is what they're doing to keep people safe. now, i'm sure a lot of people are wondering, is it omicron, is it delta? not everyone has done genotyping so we don't know, but certainly some of them -- we know at least some of them are omicron. now, this is happening at the same time, ana, as you mentioned, that sporting events are also -- and sports teams are also being affected. so let's take a look at that. for the cleveland browns, their covid reserve list, they added six players just today. they added eight yesterday. the nfl says that 28 players tested positive yesterday. the nhl, the hockey folks, have postponed their ninth game this season. they postponed their game last night. that was the ninth time they've done that this season because of covid. as we can see, things are ramping up and these are the steps these organizations are taking to keep people safe. ana? >> now i understand cdc vaccine advisors will meet tomorrow on the j&j covid-19 vaccine and some potential changes to their recommendations. what more can you tell us about that? >> so a source is telling me, ana, that they're going to be reviewing safety information for the johnson & johnson vaccine. you'll remember that there is a very rare but a very dangerous blood clotting event that's been associated with the johnson & johnson vaccine, so they're going to talk through new data. my source said that they very well could limit who gets johnson & johnson while people, various men and women, have had these blood clots and there's been a variety of ages, the highest rate have been young women, women under the age of 50, so they might be saying that women of that age shouldn't be getting johnson & johnson. in many ways this is not a big deal because the number of people vaccinated with it are such a tiny number compared to pfizer and moderna. it would still be okay, we would be able to vaccinate people even if we took johnson & johnson off the table for some populations, but still, there could be a warning in effect issued for johnson & johnson tomorrow. we'll wait and see what the cdc advisors have to say. >> elizabeth cohen, thank you for staying on top of all of this. i really appreciate that update. let's talk to dr. john offitt. he's a member of the vaccine advisory committee. doctor, thank you for being with us. let's start where elizabeth left off, the cdc taking a second look at the j&j vaccine. what do you think? should it be taken off the table? >> again, we need to see the data so we'll pay attention to what happens in tomorrow's meeting. we do know, as elizabeth cohen said, there is a side effect of clotting and severe clotting, basically a blood clot in the brain which has caused rare fatalities, about five or six fatalities so far from that. it does appear to be a young women phenomenon. while it's 94% at preventing illness and some people would prefer that vaccine, maybe it should be limited to say people who are male and people who are older. we'll see what the advisory committee says tomorrow. >> there is obviously the issue of blood clots, but isn't efficacy the other issue here, because we know that it was recommended that people get boosters after just two months of getting that one dose, even though that was deemed fully vaccinated. >> in retrospect, this was always a two-dose vaccine. when the advisory committee reviewed the data on february 26, j&j was in the midst of doing a two-dose. a 30,000 trial which they completed after that meeting. they were 95% effective at preventing all covid illnesses. the j&j dose with one dose was about 75% effective. now they've seen with the j&j with a two-months separation, it was 94% effective. people should consider this a two-dose vaccine. >> we know pfizer's isn't as effective and we're still waiting for data on the other vaccines, but universities are struggling, sports teams are struggling. even with large portions of their communities vaccinated, they are seemingly following the guidelines, taking all the precautions. what's going on there? >> i think what people should realize is that the two doses of an mrna-containing vaccine remains high on seeking doctors or going to the intensive care unit. but these vaccines over time, all of them, are not going to be that great at preventing mild or asymptomatic infections. we saw that in three-month trials, but all participants have recently received a second dose. now you're seeing six months later, nine months later, as neutralizing antibodies there is some decrease against protection of a mild illness. what we are seeing, and i think people should be reassured by this, there is a continued separation between cases and then severe cases, because both natural infection and vaccination will protect against severe disease, so where you see the cases, you're seeing less severe cases, so that's actually a good thing. >> so what about boosters? at least a handful of universities are saying they're now going to require boosters for students, and i know you've been arguing against universal boosters, saying they're just not needed. but we do now know two doses don't work nearly as well as three against omicron, which is spreading like crazy right now. the cdc director, dr. walensky, dr. fauci, they've been urging americans to get their boosters because they want to stop the spread, right? that's how this virus mutates. that's how people who are unvaccinated ultimately end up in the hospital. have you changed your mind on boosters? what do you think? >> from the data that pfizer recently presented, with two doses of mrna-containing vaccine, you are still highly protected against severe illness. that's good, but where omicron is difficult is that even if you had two doses of the vaccine, protection against mild illness isn't as good. so i think it is reasonable, then, to get a third dose to boost that immunity for at least a period of time in protection, not just against omicron but to a certain extent against delta, because you're not going to be protected as well against mild illness over time. that's the advantage of the booster. remember, if that's the strategy, if the strategy is boosting to keep your neutralizing antibodies up, even with a third dose, that will fade over time. i think it's a solution for the winter months, but we may find it next summer that neutralizing antibodies is better. delta was a highly contagious virus, as contagious as chicken pox which is a highly contagious virus. omicron is a worry. >> and we're hearing the rate of omicron's spread is now doubling every couple of days, according to the cdc director. so we'll keep watching. dr. paul offitt, thank you for taking your time and expertise. really appreciate you. president biden is in kentucky this hour touring the hardest hit areas ravaged by a sf string of deadly tornadoes. na that state is enduring just heartbreaking loss. on one street 11 people were killed, including two babies. kaitlan collins is traveling with the president. kaitlan, take us through what the president is seeing and saying. >> reporter: he's getting an up-close look, ana, at this devastation here. he is touring a neighborhood right now in mayfield, kentucky. that's where that candle factory is, and he got a briefing earlier from officials. that's going over the nuts and bolts of everything, what do they need, what are they doing, what federal resources are they expecting to tap into going forward, but he's also looking at the human aspect of this, which is going into these neighborhoods where people have lost everything, and they are going and looking at this storm that has just devastated a lot of these areas. this is where president biden says he wants to listen. he wants to hear these stories and talk to these people. then he's going to come here to dawson springs where i am, where an entire neighborhood behind me as just been completely leveled, essentially, and trees are just snapped in half like they were matchsticks. this is where scott jennings, our friend, is from. this is something the president is also going to come and see, get a briefing here in dawson springs as well, and talk to people on the ground about what they're going through. here in dawson springs, when it comes to the rebuilding process, it's expected to be a long one if you talk to officials around here. if you look in the population, about a third of the city lives beneath the poverty line. the average median income is just over $32,000, and some of the people who lost their homes do not have insurance. so when it comes to the process of rebuilding it and recovering it, that's going to be a long process for them. finding space for them now, where to live. we have the holidays coming up and dealing with that. and also just walking around and talking to people who right now they're looking through the rubble here, they are looking for family photos that are just strewn across the ground here. they are finding the ashes of pets that they loved so much they had cremated. and going through the rubble and just looking for any of these kinds of mementos that of course they don't have access to much longer. we should note another welcome sign, rain is on the way to this area. it's going to be raining the next several days, so they don't have a lot of time left. they're doing that and just talking to the communities here and dealing with the devastation they experienced over the weekend. of course, this is now drawing national attention as it has for several days. it's getting a visit by the president who says he is here. he wants to listen and talk to people on the ground. >> kaitlan collins, we know you're going to be staying closely on these developments wedevelopments. we're watching right now the motorcade there. it looks like we're looking at community members coming up to the president's entourage as well. this is mayfield, kentucky. and now we have the president getting out of the car and greeting some of what i believe to be community members who are there on the ground awaiting his visit. it was important for him to come here, right, kaitlan, to be able to not only see firsthand but to really show that he understands the depth of their loss. >> reporter: yeah, because it's not just the part of making sure that fema is on the ground, in making sure they're talking about insurance claims and what that's going to look like. obviously those things are critical to people, but it's also the president here coming to show that he understands what they're going through examine tal -- and talking about the pain of this. he mentioned this on saturday, the sun had come up and we were seeing the devastation on the ground and what it really looked like. a lot of them hit overnight. i'm from alabama, and those are the worst kinds because it's dark outside and you don't always know what to expect. people are sleeping. the president was talking about the loss of something like this, because it's not a situation where you can grab one or two valuables and make sure you've got something really important to you. it hits you and sometimes you're not even wearing tennis shoes, you're not prepared for this. we were reading one story a woman was just wrapping gifts in the living room, didn't think it was going to get that bad. of course, next thing they know the bathtub they were hiding in was outside and they were being rained on. i think the president was trying to talk about that on saturday, of just how overwhelmed and rattled people can be after going through something like this, which is completesly unde -- completely understandable, of course. that's the other part of a visit like this, to see the damage. it's not just to draw attention and say, yes, we are deploying federal resources here. it's also just to comfort people and reassure that people do see their pain, they do feel their pain, and they understand what they're going through. >> he's taking on that consoler in chief role. he's holding the hand of one of the folks he's greeting in mayfield, kentucky right now as they're surrounded by so much devastation. you see all that equipment being brought in to help clear the debris caused by these twisters that ripped up the town of mayfield. again, dozens of people died in kentucky alone, including, you know, an infant as young as two months old, just learning about her story and how she and her siblings were in a bathtub and they were covered with cushions to try to protect them, and yet, you know, you just couldn't escape the wrath of mother nature. and so president biden trying to let these people know the federal government will be with them through it all. we know he's not just going to visit mayfield, kentucky. he will also be touring neighborhoods in other areas of kentucky, in other states. he'll be heading to princeton, kentucky, and he'll also be heading to fort campbell, kentucky later this afternoon, and we'll anticipate his remarks as well later today. again, these pictures in mayfield, kentucky right now. you can just see all the chaos surrounding the people. and, kaitlan, talk to us a little bit more just about, i guess, what this moment means given where the president is in his presidency and how the american people feel about the job he's doing. >> reporter: yeah. of course, this comes as we're in a moment where he's coming up on one year in office, and often presidents are judged by the events that happen and how they handle them. sometimes storms like this one and natural disasters can really define a presidency. we have certainly seen that with some of his predecessors. this, of course, is a moment where when you talk to people about biden's strength and what he is best at when he's in office, this is often one that people point out, critics and fans alike, where they say he does have an ability to empathize with people, and as you noted, people often say consoler in chief as a term they describe him as, because it's about meeting people on the ground, meeting the moment, talking out what's going on and making sure they have their resources. especially in a place like kentucky where they had an ice storm a year ago, now they're dealing with this. you see president biden. they're going up to people just surrounded by utter devastation and destruction. it becomes more clear by the day, every single day that has passed since these storms first hit, they get a better picture of this. there is no good timing for this, certainly not right before the holidays, and this is something that is a new reality. if you've ever lived through a tornado before or you've seen something like this, i think the government of kentucky said this is one of the worst tornadoes they've had in their state. this is not just a process of a few weeks. yes, cleaning up the debris which they've really started doing today is a big aspect. they want to do that before the rain comes tomorrow and the next several days, but this is a process that can take years. it's not something that happens overnight or a few weeks where they do have the process of cleaning up, it's something that affects the community fior a log time. long after the national attention is gone here, it's something these communities will still be dealing with. that plays into president biden's visit today. he also wanted to make sure his visit was timed, that it didn't interfere with those initial recovery efforts. that's a big aspect of this, and you don't want to bring a presidential visit which encourages a lot of staff on the ground. that's why he waited until wednesday to come and visit, see what's going on. i also just want to say, seeing it firsthand also changes how you view it, because you can see the amazing images that cnn has taken of it. we've had a huge team on the ground ever since early saturday morning, but seeing it firsthand does change it for you. >> yeah, i can only imagine. thank you so much, kaitlan collins, for your reporting. we'll continue to follow the president's visit. we'll bring updates to our viewers as we get them. meantime, the ball is now in the justice department's court, so the question is will the doj prosecute former trump chief of staff >> i think mark meadows should be charged criminally and here's why. it's a different case from steve bannon, first of all. he was not a member of the executive branch at the time in question, and he completely stonewalled the committee. in that respect he has an even weaker executive department defense than does mark meadows. bannon seems to have waived his defense. he wrote a book about it and he handed over thousands of documents. i don't know how you give over documents and say, here, you can have them but i can't talk about them. the federal courts have told us the executive defense doesn't hold here. i think it's a 50-50 call. >> does it potentially shut the door on actually getting meadows to talk? >> a criminal prosecution does not compel testimony, it's just meant to punish and deter. one thing that could happen, though, if doj agrees with this, they can bring a charge, and then if meadows agrees to testify, in their discretion, prosecutors can say, fine, you testify fully and we'll drop these charges. that's one way it could go. >> a number of the texts revealed were from unnamed gop lawmakers. and in one of those text messages, this is one i keep thinking about, a day after the election, one lawmaker texted this. here is an aggressive strategy. why can't the state or cia call this bogus? an attack on our democracy and some of these people are still in congress. i wonder if we'll start to see some republicans start to distance themselves from it is b -- the big lie on january 6 and say, it wasn't me that sent that text. >> you would hope so because that text is potentially damning. it's like watching someone cook up an election scam and saying that's democracy. democracy is doing its job, let's try and meddle in this election. the alarming part is when he or she refers to our controlled state houses. essentially, i assume, suggesting that they have enough influence over republican governors and election officials in those states to ca jole them to go along with this election scam. it's appalling, and i would hope republicans would want to distance themselves from that. unfortunately, we've seen little of that kind of courage in the past. >> bennie thompson said they'll decide in the next week or so when to release the names of the authors of those texts. eli, why aren't they naming names on these lawmakers' texts? does that strike you as odd? >> it does. i think this is congress protecting its own. the committee told us we can't disclose these names because it's an ongoing investigation and we need it to be confidential. fine, but that's not what they're doing. they're freely disclosing the names of private officials. laura ingram and others, they're private citizens. they're not entitled to worse treatment than members of congress. they've sent dozens, if not hundreds, of subpoenas, yet who have they not subpoenaed? kevin mccarthy and jim jordan, fellow members of congress, who we know had contact with donald trump and key members on january 6. i think it's hypocritical by congress and the committee. >> i wonder if this has something to do with them trying to bring republicans along their investigation, not trying to throw extra flames of division in the mix. >> i don't know, i believe that we'll learn who these people are. i think bennie thompson suggested, i think it was him, that we'll learn of these names if there's not more than ten and we won't be surprised by who they are. so i think maybe this is part of a shock and awe strategy. part one is to drop these texts unnamed, have people get real, you know, alarmed by them, and then go ahead and release the names. i think we'll find out who these folks are. >> i want to play some sound from a january 6 rally organizer who says he feels betrayed by former president trump. listen. >> people who committed violence, the people who attacked police officers or defaced the capitol are responsible for their own actions, first and foremost. but the buck has got to stop at president trump. the fact that he delayed for so long responding, i think, really speaks ill of what his intentions were and what he was doing. >> se, what do you make of that? >> yeah. well, that interview with justin stockton, one of the organizers of stop the steal rally, was incredible with anderson cooper. that was one part of it. i was also really taken by the fact that earlier in that interview, he said that basically he was embarrassed at having been sort of taken by donald trump. he called it a bluff or a con, the whole big lie and insurrection event. and if you multiply that by millions, right, millions of people have been taken, i think, by donald trump, and i think millions more have been taken by the hucksters at fox news who we know text one thing and say another thing privately. it's a big con. not just the election lie, but other lies. the lies about covid, the lies about democracy and the lies about the media. i mean, it's all one big con job. and i guess people might revel in the fact that folks like justin stockton were taken. i don't celebrate that, i think it's really sad. i feel for people who were taken in by lies and are still being taken in by lies on a daily, nightly basis over at fox. >> but going back to what happened on january 6, liz cheney keeps rerferencing a criminal statute saying, did donald trump, by action or inaction, continue to obstruct or impede the ability to count electoral votes? how likely is it that trump is held criminally liable for the events of january 6? >> well, at this point i think it's very unlikely. there is no sign that the justice department is even meaningfully investigating donald trump for his role in january 6. it's possible they're doing it, but we've seen no subpoenas, no grand jury convened, no witness interviews, no media reporting. it seems unlikely to me. i think what liz cheney and other members of congress are trying to do is up the pressure for the doj to take action. officer harry dunn, one of the brave officers who defended the capitol, he said, i can lead the doj on this and whatever comes out, charge or no charge, but i cannot live with them taking no action. >> as you referred to fox news and texts by some fox news hosts like sean hannity, saying meadows trying to urge the president to do something, he writes, can he make a statement? ask people to leave the capitol? hannity addressed this yesterday, defending himself, but his colleague, geraldo rivera, wasn't having it. listen. >> i beg you, sean, to remember the frame of mind you were in when you wrote that text on january 6th and when laura did and when brian did and when don jr. did. remember the concern you had. remember the frustration you had at our beloved 45th president. where was he? >> because i wanted the riot to end. >> why doesn't he say something? but you wanted him -- >> the point is he did. >> se, that's his colleague calling him out. what's your reaction? >> well, i have to wonder if geraldo rivera will be the next to leave fox because they don't take kindly to this kind of pushback. sean didn't really clear up anything, and laura ingram said similar things, really defending themselves, again, also blaming nancy pelosi and liz cheney to distract us from what they said and did. but sean says he's been consistent with his viewers and that's just false. yes, he did condemn the violence of january 6, but he also spent the last 11 months saying trump wasn't responsible and trump supporters were not responsible. well, that flies in the face of your text which is saying, make trump do something. have trump stop these people, because presumably "these people" are there because of trump and can be swayed by trump. so those things are incongruous, and same goes for laura and brian kilmeade and tucker carlson and name your fox news entertainment host. but that did nothing to clear up anything, really. >> s.e. cupp and eli hoenig, i have to leave it there. thank you for this discussion. again, a huge task. they're going to try to contain rising inflation without sparking a recession. that's next. must be carried across all roads and all bridges. it's not magic that makes more holiday deliveries to homes in the us than anyone else, it's the hardworking people of the united states postal service. >> are you ready to start a great career? >> yeah, ana, it's definitely tricky. they face this really difficult balancing act. on the one hand the fed wants to allow the economy to continue to heal itself, but they've also g got a really serious inflation issue on their hands. producers spiked in november a year ago. that's the biggest jump that started about 11 years ago. inflation was pretty calm before covid, but it really exploded in months afterward because of these supply chain covid-related issues, and also because demand really picked up because the economy had increased. we know that consumer prices are rising at the fastest pace in nearly 40 years, everything from coffee to eggs to pork. gasoline, of course, all of that up sharply. and this high inflation is really hurting president biden in the polls, but this is really a problem for the federal reserve. it's their responsibility to maintain stable prices, and ana, prices right now are anything but stable. >> you laid out the problem there. walk us through the fed's options, then, for fighting inflation. >> simply put, they have to get out of emergency mode. in march 2020, the feds released this ease of the economy. they moved the interest rate to zero. that made sense when the world was falling apart but now inflation is high. wink the fed will announce they'll speed up the end of that bond buying program. it could end as early as march. also the fed might signal at some point next year they may raise interest rates. wall street is pricing in rate hikes for next year. rate hikes would increase the borrowing for everything like mortgages and car loans to credit cards. the bar would still be low but this would be a way to slow the economy down a bit. the hope is that the fedun winding policies maybe with some covid on the front next year could cool off inflation. >> i want to bring in cnn political director david chalian now. david, cnn has brand new polling on how americans feel about the government's handling of inflation and the economic problems affecting their lives. what are we learning? >> we're learning that broadly the american people do not think the government is doing enough to respond to inflation. take a look at these brand new numbers from cnn and our polling partners from srs. 72% of americans in this poll say the government is doing too little to respond to inflation. only 22% say it's doing the right amount, 5% say too much. we also asked a whole series of economic issues and wanted to get a sense from people on how much concern they have about its impact on the economy. look at this. 80% of americans in this poll say that food costs are a major problem for the u.s. economy. 79% supply chain issues. 77% say that about housing costs. you see all the way down there. it's the pandemic. it's the coronavirus pandemic that is still down at 65%. two-thirds of americans say it's a major problem, but in comparison to the rising costs, you can see that's what it means for americans to be feeling the impact of that inflation. >> and as matt just mentioned, it's really the feds that have the power to take action here, but you have some approval numbers also in that polling for how president biden is handling this economy. how do americans see it? >> he's under water on the issue of the economy, which, as you know, is issue number one. look at all of these issues. only with the coronavirus is he at approval, 54% of how he's handling coronavirus. everything else he is under, and in helping the middle class he only has 45% approval. we were asked if he has impacted the economy. nearly 45%, nearly half of those polled, say biden's policies have worsened economic conditions in this country, a quarter say it had no effect, 30% say he made it better. compare that to obama in 2009 when employunemployment was twit it is now, and you can see americans have a more dismal view of biden than they did for obama during his time in office. derek chauvin, the ex-cop accused of killing george floyd is back in court today, and he just changed his plea on one of the federal charges against him. what it means, next. s not like's my only interest. i also love cooking with heart-healthy, idaho potatoes. always look for the grown in idaho seal. johnson & johnson is the world's largest healthcare company. building a future where cancers can be cured. strokes can be reversed. joints can be 3-d printed. and there isn't one definition of what well feels like. there are millions. we're using our world to make your world a world of well. not only do centrum multigummies taste great. they help support your immune defenses, too. because a healthy life. starts with a healthy immune system. with vitamins c and d, and zinc. getting out there has never tasted so good. try centrum multigummies. this is your home. this is your family room slash gym. the guest bedroom slash music studio. the daybed slash dog bed. the living room slash yoga shanti slash regional office slash classroom. and this is the basement slash panic room. maybe what your family needs is a vacation home slash vacation home. find yours on the vrbo app. ♪ i thought i was managing my moderate to severe crohn's disease. then i realized something was missing... ...me. my symptoms were keeping me from being there for her. so, i talked to my doctor and learned humira is the #1 prescribed biologic for people with crohn's disease. humira helps people achieve remission that can last. and the majority of people on humira saw significant symptom relief in as little as 4 weeks. humira can lower your ability to fight infections. serious and sometimes fatal infections, including tuberculosis, and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened, as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if you've had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don't start humira if you have an infection. be there for you, and them. ask your gastroenterologist about humira. with humira, remission is possible. learn how abbvie could help you save on humira. i brought in ensure max protein, with thirty grams of protein. those who tried me felt more energy in just two weeks!
