[ laughter ] >> oh, boy, you can't write this stuff. laura ingram, sean hannity, that's the whole prime that's the whole prime time lineup right there. they knew what they were seeing with their own eyes. they don't say they pretended it was something else but they knew. they're lying. there is no other way to say it. they're flat out lying. they're acting like nothing happened even though the president's own son knew the truth. watch this. >> as the violence continued, one of the president's sons texted mr. meadows. quote, he's got to condemn this shit asap. the capitol police tweet is not enough. donald trump junior texted. meadows responded quote, i'm pushing it hard. i agree. still, president trump did not immediately act. donald trump jr texted again and again urging action by the president, quote, we need an over office address. he has to lead now. it has gone too far and gotten out of hand. >> he knew the truth. he knew it was no tourist visit, no peaceful protest. these were no patriots. don't give we that. these are not patriots. that's not what patriotism is. these are insurrectionists, a lot of them. this was not antifa. wasn't black lives matter. they all knew the mob was doing the then president's bidding. they knew he could stop them and he didn't. lawmakers in fear for their lives texting meadows their former colleague pleading for help. >> members of congress, the press and others wrote to mark meadows as the attack was underway. one text mr. meadows received said quote we are under siege here at the capitol. another quote they have breached the capitol. in a third, mark, protesters are literally storming the capitol breaking windows on doors, rushing in. is trump going to say something? a fourth, there is an armed standoff at the house chamber door. and another from someone inside the capitol, we are all helpless. dozens of texts including from trump administration officials urged immediate action by the president. quote, potis has to come out firmly and tell the protesters to dissipate. someone is going to get killed. in another, mark, he needs to stop this now. a third in all caps, tell them to go home. a fourth and i quote, potis needs to calm this shit down. >> well, but this text is absolutely chilling. an elected official texting mark meadows the day after, after the violent attack on our nation's capitol. watch this. >> the last message i want to highlight again from the lawmaker in the aftermath of january 6th if we could queue graphic number three. yesterday was a terrible day. we tried everything we could in our objection to the six states. i'm sorry nothing worked. the day after a failed attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power through violence, an elected lawmaker tells the white house chief of staff i'm sorry nothing worked. that is chilling. >> it's chilling and disgusting. i'm sorry nothing worked? that's what you're sorry about? that the attack on our democracy didn't work? that's what didn't work? let us remember what this is all about. this is about an attempted coup, an attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election, our free and fair election. an assault on our democracy itself and it is not over yet. the lies are still out there, poisoning our country. poisoning you if you still believe it. if you still believe that there was some sort of something happened with the election. you've been poisoned and lied to. you've be co-opted. you've been misled. the lies from the twice impeached one-term former insurrection inspiring president, the lies from his minions in congress and in the right wing media has proven through the text. the lies that can take us down if we let them, the most important question in all of this is what are we going to do about it? what are you going to do about it? gloria borger is here and jamie and laura coates. we see these desperate text messages from donald trump junior and from numerous fox news hosts. we know mark meadows was with donald trump during the insurrection and we knew trump did next to nothing. >> right. so today was a very bad day for donald trump because what these text messages did was told the truth out of the mouths of trump loyalists and friends from his chief of staff who is sitting right there with him, republican members of congress, fox news hosts, trump administration officials and as you pointed out, his very own son. they all acknowledge what was happening. anyone who then or now denied the january 6th happened, it's over, don, and today was just the tip of the iceberg. the committee, i'm told by a source familiar with the text, that there are hundreds of texts that are quote relevant and of interest to the committee along these lines. >> yeah, gloria, i think jamie is right. there is no -- i mean, obviously, here is the evidence. i play, gloria, the congresswoman liz cheney reading a text between donald trump junior and mark meadows. he's got to condemn this shit asap. the capitol police tweet is not enough. mark meadows replied, i'm pushing it hard. i agree. trump jr texted over and over and told meadows we need an oval office address. he has to lead now and it's gotten out of hand. the president's own son knew what was going on and couldn't talk to his own father. i don't care, my mama is going to pick up for me. my own parent is going to pick up the phone. he couldn't get in touch with his dad to tell him what a screwed up job he was doing. >> this is a story worthy of succession maybe. maybe he didn't think he would pick up the phone or get through to him. the larger story here is that mark meadows said i'm pushing. and he told that to don jr and yet, the president did nothing. did nothing. and what is this committee trying to show? the committee is trying to show that the president not only was involved in the insurrection but he supported the insurrection, did nothing about the insurrection. so this shows that if, in fact, meadows was telling the truth to don junior and went to the president and the president did nothing, you know, that kind of proves their point. i mean, all of these texts as jamie was saying really prove their point. laura ingraham, you haven't gotten to laura ingraham yet but she -- >> mark, the president needs to tell people in the capitol to go home. this is hurting all of us. he's destroying -- >> all of us. this is hurting all of us. so if you have a fan of laura ingraham and believe her and you're a fan of sean hannity or don jr, do you now have to believe they are double dealing impostures who are publicly saying one thing, this is no big deal. laura ingraham came out and criticized the police officers and that they're saying something different privately to mark meadows that they knew, in fact, how dangerous this is and how damaging it is so -- >> gloria, they're saying behind closed doors in text messages what the rest of the media, right, the media not owned by donald trump is saying about the insurrection. >> sure. >> this is awful. this is terrible for republicans. this is terrible for our country. the president needs to stop it. but they won't say it publicly on a platform where they should be saying it because they don't want -- they're afraid of losing viewers? they're afraid of people -- they're afraid of donald trump getting mad at them? >> maybe. they've woven an alternate narrative that works for them and they're going to stick to >> and complicit in some way. >> mark meadows has committed a crime, in this case, a premeditated one. he thought carefully about his actions and actively chose to stonewall, which you can clearly see in his back and forth with the select committee. first, he produced over 9,000 pages of documents from his time then after his former boss made it clear his disappointment and displeasure, he did a 180 and refused to answer a single question from his former colleagues or even to show up at all. >> so laura coates, kinzinger says meadows knows what he's doing. what gives here? >> listen, what we heard today forces the hands of three different groups, members of congress in the full house to be able to vote and say are we really going to allow not only the idea of mark meadows thumbing the nose, but there are people within our ranks who actually actively sought to conspire in this way to try to overthrow the legitimate election, the fair and free one and had ideas even after the insurrection? he also forced the hand of the department of justice because, of course, one of the things that they're concerned with is trying to persuade the courts to be able to say listen, this person had a validly authorized duly issued subpoena from a member, people who were his previous colleagues. he knows full well about the power over congressional subpoena and have an interest in transparency here. he provided information, and by the way, don, if these are the 9,000 emails he wanted hand over, imagine the rest of the iceberg below the surface right now that he now is saying wait a second, maybe i shouldn't have given that. if you're already mad about that, mr. president, you don't know what is behind door number two. and also forced the hand of the judiciary to say, listen, if you balanced privileged assertion for executive privilege about the institution of the presidency, you always have to balance it against the idea of transparency about issues of extraordinary national importance that are going to matter to the electret and american people. the idea you have people who are in cahoots to conspire to over throw an attack the capitol, the idea of knowingly doing so and remember, we talk from day one, the idea that what you were seeing on january 6th wasn't the beginning of the story or the end of the story. it was the middle. what led up to it? it blows out of the water any assertion this is a partisan witch hunt to drudge up information there. there is there there and it comes from the mouths of members of congress and some of the most staunch advocates for donald trump in the media today. >> laura, what do you call that because it holds up in the court of law, people are taking contemporaneous notes at the time. these are along those lines. >> contemporaneous. it's contemporaneous. that's what you corroborate. you want to show some semblance of credibility. you bypass credibility by saying listen, here are the context l things going on. it corroborates, it was close in time. there is no time to fabricate or change one's mind. you're saying it instantly. it's like if somebody says of a dying declaration, this is the person that shot me telling a medical officer here is what just happened to me, trying to say hey, the light just turned green. that red car went through. all of these are ways that you in the moment are saying things. even down to former director james comey taking notes on what he was observing and seeing practically in real time. there is not the issues of credibility any longer and this tells you reminds you this tells you don jr and the like, they thought they would have cover from mark meadows. they went out blasting all as gloria and jamie have talked about because they thought they would have cover indefinitely. the jig is up and it ought to be. >> yeah. >> these are the receipts. that's the way i would put it. >> those are the receipts. afterwards the lawmaker saying sorry, nothing worked. jamie, lord. thank you. sorry, yesterday was a terrible day. we tried everything we could in our objection to the six states. i'm sorry, nothing worked. that's what they were sorry about. >> you know -- >> go ahead, jamie. >> what i want to say is there is a line in liz cheney's statement that speaks to where we're going next and laura can speak about the criminal part of it but she says did donald trump through action or inaction corruptly seek to obstuct or impede official proceedings? >> if this is accurate and i hope it's not, that it really speaks to something that we've never seen before in the history of our country. and that is the politicalization of the military even more so that the fact of the matter is that one side of the federal government was anticipating violence whereas the other side of the federal government wasn't planning for it and so that's particularly worrisome. there is a lot of things we're seeing with the january 6th commission. it seems every stone they turn over something crawls out from underneath it so we're learning more and more about it. it certainly wasn't coordinated with the district of colombia and we're just learning about this ourselves this week. >> as head of intelligence at d.c.'s homeland security office, you were seeing giant red flags ahead of the insurrection. what were you seeing and who were you sounding the alarm to, sir? >> we were seeing really worrisome trends. we saw a spike in what the lay people would call chatter. that's from an intelligence standpoint. a lot of interest in attending a particular event but not just interest in coming to participate in peaceful first amendment activities. we were seeing far right extremists talking about hiding weapons, bringing long guns and sharing plans to enter the capitol and things of that type of nature. we also saw groups that historically don't talk with each other online, far right wing national types of groups, armed militia, white supremacists, even neo-nazis. the untold story is the rise of the conspiracy theory movement. they have come and penetrated the groups in a way we haven't seen before and gone main stream and we shared this information with federal partners and local partners and some people prepared with the information and obviously as the january 6th commission is looking at, some people didn't. >> what can you tell us about your conversations with the january 6th committee? >> well, i'll tell you i don't want to get ahead of them. they're clearly doing a great job. what i can tell you is that i've had two conversations with them. one conversation really focused on january 6th and really getting to the nuts and bolts of what we knew from an intelligence standpoint and who we shared that information with much like you're asking here. and then another conversation which i thought was really eye opening and i think your viewers should appreciate is the fact they're also looking prospectively. not just what happened a year ago but what we can do now to change a really concerning trend. understand that january 6th is a point on a timeline, don. it didn't begin a movement and it didn't start or end with a movement. if you look wholistically, there is a lot of concerning -- as you mentioned earlier, signs that the ideology that existed on january 6th is still out there. the enablers of what occurred on that day is still out there. and we should be really concerned particularly with the conspiracy theory and armed militia out there and potentially plotting. >> so happy that you can come on. we know you can't tell us everything but we think you illuminated our viewers and we thank you. >> thank you. all these bombshells from the january 6th committee about the capitol riot and what are we hearing from top republicans? i think it was a fraction from a seconds away and with all these texts and emails we're getting a clear picture of how panicked even trump allies and mouthpieces were. this is incredible damming evidence, no?
