detailed today to fight this highly mutated variant. scientists are racing to determine if the current vaccines protect against this variant and if it spreads more easily. experts hope to have answers in about a week. in the meantime, markets continue to be rattled and the travel bans continue to multiply. >> more than 70 countries now including the u.s. have issued travel bans against southern african nations. omicron was first detected in south africa, and now has been confirmed in 20 countries. still not the u.s. though. and the cdc director says the u.s. now has far more tools today to fight variants than this time last year. >> compared to earlier this year when we were sequencing about 8,000 samples per week, we have increased our genomic sequencing capability, and we are now sequencing approximately 80,000 samples per week, about one in every seven pcr positive cases and that's more than any other country. >> our correspondents are following omicron's impact around the world. >> i'm frederik pleitgen in berlin, as germany now has four confirmed cases of the comicron variant. this is a major concern for germany as the country is in the midst of a wave of coronavirus infections anyways. next door in the netherlands, the authorities there say that the omicron variant arrived there a week earlier than previously thought. in fact, the authorities say that they detected omicron in a simple from november 19th. i'm ben wederman in rome. almost every hour, new cases of the omicron variant are being reported across europe while governments are scramble to go reassure a weary public that this time they won't be caught unprepared. at a press conference tuesday afternoon, british prime minister boris johnson said the best defense against this new variant is to get vaccinated or to get a booster shot. he said his government will throw everything into the effort to get all adults boosters by the end of january. yet, fears over this new variant obscure the threat posed by all variants of covid-19 and some parts of europe, infection rates are double what they were last winter, though deaths are down where vaccination rates are high. >> i'm chrkristie lu stout in h kong. we learned that all cases of the omicron variant are imported. hong kong has strengthened border restrictions banning nonresidents from a growing list of countries. four countries have been added to the list, despite having three confirmed cases in this chinese territory, china remains confident. the spokesperson says the winter olympics will proceed as planned despite the emergence of the variant. it is hard to guarantee success given all the uncertainty about this new variant. >> thanks to all of our correspondents there. let's bring in now dr. megan ranny, professor of emergency medicine and associate dean of public health at brown university. great to see you. i know you have been talking about the fine line between overreaction and under reaction. so are we achieving that? >> i don't think so. not yet. you know, what would the correct type of reaction be? it would be preparing our population to be ready to go get tested. getting more first doses of vaccines in arms, making sure that everyone who is high risk, those who are aged 50 plus, immunocompromised, making sure all of them have boosters, and reminding people that ventilation and masks, those mainstays of covid-19 prevention that have been with us since the beginning reminding folks that they still work against omicron. these travel bans, too little, too late, and far too much panic associated with them. we're harming the very people that helped us discover this variant. >> let's talk more about the travel bans, and i want to put up a list here. on the left you'll see the countries that are under these travel bans in 70 countries around the world. on the right, these are countries that do not have travel bans. you have eight southern african countries, six of them have no identified cases of omicron, zimouche backbone y-- na mibia. what's the logic of this? >> not being the person putting the travel bans in place, looking at it from the outside, i see very little logic behind t. i have heard arguments this will slow the importation of these new mutations. i don't see the truth behind that knowing that it is widespread across europe and even asia at this point. the other argument that i have heard is that vaccination rates are lower in sub saharan africa than in the rest of the world. that's true. but we should be requiring vaccines for anyone on international air travel period, and secondly that's our fault that sub saharan africa, only 8% of adults are vaccinated. we could be doing something about that. >> speaking of how few people are vaccinated, dr. michael osterholm, infectious disease expert, university of minnesota, got our attention yesterday because he talked about how few people have gotten the booster, so we're all walking around, all of us doubly vaxxed folks, thinking we're protected. >> we're growing more vulnerable every day in this country, not less because we have 120 million americans who have gone past their six months since they were originally vaccinated and each day they become more and more susceptible to now getting infected and we're only boosting about 35 million of those 120 million. so this is a real challenge. >> if we put up the graph, you're only 12% of people in the u.s. have gotten that booster, and so we keep calling it a booster. really i think we've learned this is a three-dose regimen of this vaccine. >> let's talk about who is most important to get boosted. it is the elderly, folks in nursing homes, folks who are immuno suppressed, people who are really high risk for hospitalization and death. we are still seeing the vaccines protect the rest of us from those severe outcomes, but especially with this variant, it's important for all of us to go out and get that booster shot. >> but i want to ask you about that, doctor, the rest of us who don't fit into the category of most vulnerable, it's been more than six months, shouldn't all of us get that booster, because isn't it waning for all of us? >> yes, i'm telling everyone who's six months plus at this point to go out and get the booster. where it will make the difference is in the older age groups, and one thing i continually worry about is the equity of our distribution of vaccines in this country. we need to double down on making sure that those who are at highest risk have access to the boosters. not just those who are the worried, well, and already have the ability to stay home to work from home. >> doctor, thank you. >> thanks, doctor. let's get to the politics of all of this. maeve reston, you have a new piece for cnn.com talking about the uncertainty, and we know the white house has the lessons of the delta variant fresh on the mind talking about leading up to the fourth of july, independence, getting together with the family, and then delta hit and changed the whole thing. they're on that footing again. >> yeah, absolutely, i mean, what we saw with president biden yesterday was that he just has entered back into this sort of zone of uncertainty where his messaging is being continually upended by these twists and turns that we're seeing with the omicron variant, and also what we saw with delta earlier this year. he wanted to be out there this week talking about, you know, his infrastructure yooimproveme he's hoping for and the build back better plan he's trying to get through congress, instead he's coming forward to speak to the american public about things that he really doesn't have good answers to yet. his messaging yesterday, so much of it was about people getting vaccinated, getting boosters. that's the same thing that we have been hearing from him for months now, and you know, clearly the white house is frustrated with this, and it's very hard for the american people to focus on what he wants them to hear. >> and the rnc is seizing on the fact that the coronavirus is not over. they say on twitter, joe biden promised he would shut down the coronavirus. he failed. and in fact, in 2020 during a presidential debate, he did say i'm going to shut down the virus, not the country. it's his ineptitude about donald trump that caused this country to have to shut down in large part, so, i mean, does that constitute a campaign promise? >> i mean, i think that that statement looking back now probably was ill advised, but, i mean, this is the problem that he's facing with this wall of opposition from republicans in terms of helping him carve the path out of the pandemic. we know from that recently kaiser family foundation study frat biggest determinant in terms of demographic factors, it's not race or age or other factors about whether you have gotten vaccinated but whether you're a republican or a democrat, and so it's unclear what about biden's new messaging on the need to get vaccines and the need to get boosters, fst go it's going to change the minds of millions of americans who have not gotten their shots yet, and he's getting no help at all from republicans on that. we saw wild messaging from people like ronny jackson talking about how this variant is made up for democrats to push a campaign for mail-in ballots next year, and it's just sort of these wild conspiracy theories that the administration is having to deal with, and they don't have these trusted messengers to get the message across to those republicans who have not yet been vaccinated. >> you're so right. it's interesting that the rnc is cherry picking the message, and they can look at their party around all of the false messaging. thank you very much and join anderson cooper, and a town hall with dr. fauci, coronavirus facts and fears. that is going to air tomorrow night at 8:00. let's move forward on breaking news out of michigan, the school shooting. let's bring in alexandra field. what are you learning? >> authorities giving us information. they are now saying three people were killed in the shooting at oxford high school, all three believed to be students. another six people injured in the shootings. at least one of the six appears to have been a teacher. authorities giving this update just a few minutes ago. let's listen in. >> deputies took a suspect in custody within five minutes o. original 911 call. they recovered a handgun from the suspect. the suspect fired multiple shots. there's multiple victims. it's unfortunate that i have to report that we have three deceased victims right now who are all believed to be students. we have six others that were shot. one was a schoolteacher. they're all at local hospitals being treated for various injuries. >> you heard officials say there they did take the suspected shooter into custody, and recovered a handgun. they have also said they don't believe there are additional shooters. we will be getting more updates of course on the extent of the injuries and more information about the people who were injured. again, those three people who were shot and killed all believed to be students at this high school. the shots ringing out just before 1:00 local time. authorities saying they received more than 100 911 calls from the school building, responding in five minutes to take the shooter into custody. a devastating afternoon there. more information still coming. we should be getting another update from officials later this afternoon. >> just horrible. when you did your last hit a few minutes ago, i was taking some cold comfort that there weren't any kids killed, and now there are three, it looks like, student students who have been killed. do we know about the suspect, a student? >> we're not getting any information on the identity of the suspected shooter just the fact, though, that they had gone in, detained this person, done another sweep to see if they could find anyone else who had been injured, and ruled out quickly that they were not looking for anybody else, probably based on the reports they were hearing from people inside the building. we were saying they moved quickly to evacuate students but they were going through, again to make sure no one had been left behind. we'll learn more about the possible motive, relationships, the people, the victims in this case, what the relationships were. all of it too early but, yes, alisyn, you hit on such a key point. when we heard about this initially, authorities were saying four to six injuries. we now know the extent was so much greater. >> the country had a respite for these types of shootings because students were at home during the pandemic. it looks like now unfortunately we have returned to this. and you said it again, we understand it's very early in this investigation. any details about the circumstances surrounding what led up to this? >> i think you're going to, again, be hearing more about this. here's something that's really interesting, 100 911 calls made. we know there had to have been so many students, probably teachers, staff members, who were dialing 911 making the reports of what they saw, who they saw, what was unfolding in those chaotic minutes. look, it will again take some time to speak to the people who are involved, and don't forget, you're talking to high school students who are rattled, and terrified and shocked at this point. we're going to learn more about it. you'll have a number of accounts and witnesses to what's going on. >> they will brief begin at 5:00 p.m. i guess that that is local time. we'll find out the conditions of the victims. they said they took the suspect into custody within five minutes of the origf the 911 call. >> this is a full throated response from aviation, different patrol units. we know in this day and age, when you get a call like this, it could be something, it could be nothing, but you respond. we see it all the time, and we see it in the hallways and classrooms of our schools. school district and local responders are well versed and trained in how to respond. sometimes it's a false alarm. sometimes it doesn't go as badly as you think it could. this was not the case this time. >> we now know that three people have been killed. they're all believed to be students at oxford high school, oakland county, michigan, according to the undersheriff. we know there are six people who were shot. at least one of them is believed to be a teacher. we also know that there were about 20 shots that were fired and as we just heard from alexandria who's covering this, there were about 100 calls to 911 in the moments after these shots were fired, and police say that they now have taken a suspect into custody. in just a few minutes, within that 911 call, we do not have the identities of any of the people kwwho have either been killed, injured. >> alex field is staying on this for us, and will bring updates as soon as we have them. stay with us. we will be right back. i was unablele to eat. it was very hard. kimberly came to clearchoice with a bunch of missing teeth, struggling with pain, with dental disease. clearchoice dental implants solved her dental issues. well, there really still seems to be a disagreement between what the committee views as potential topics that may be covered under executive privilege, and what mark meadows views as topics covered under executive privilege. meadows is different than steve bannon, different than jeffrey clark, the former doj official set to be referred for criminal contempt starting tomorrow here on capitol hill but it is a big difference between the two of them have responded to the subpoena and the way meadows is now responding. it's to the point now where the committee believes there is enough engagement and cooperation that they aren't taking that step of criminal contempt with mark meadows, and they are hoping that they can find some common ground to get answers to the questions they're looking for and that those are questions meadows feels comfortable answering. this is a significant development. we have been cautioned many times today by our sources, victor, and alisyn, that even something little could derail this process but the committee does feel hopeful that they will get something out of mark meadows that will aid their investigation. psych victor and alisyn. thank you very much for the update. we have cnn legal and national security analyst, a former fbi special agent. asha, this is entrinteresting. lots of witnesses called have thumbed their nose at the select committee, and the select committee has made moves to hold them in contempt, and the department of justice when it comes to say steve bannon has backed that up, and so somehow now mark meadows is going to cooperate. >> yes, alisyn, this is how it's supposed to work. when there is a disagreement about, you know, the scope of executive privilege, it's supposed to involve negotiation and compromise, and i think this is going to be a win-win to some degree for congress, and for mark meadows. you know, congress gave meadows a lot of time to make a good faith effort and in doing so, they're going to get some information, and meadows, for his part, by trying to cooperate now, you know, he's basically taken the prospect of criminal li liability off the table. republican bannon was -- remember ban non was indicted. meadows is appearing to do that, he can still asesert, say he can't answer specific questions or lines of questions, and those can be litigated. there could be a downside to that because if it's litigated and a court says, you know, this is not covered by executive privilege because it doesn't involve official duties or advice or it's, you know, subject to the crime fraud exception, that could be bad news. but it does for right now, i think, make sense for mark meadows to do this if he wants to avoid any kind of criminal liability. >> asha, the language here, it sound a little tentative that this is the initial cooperation now for an initial interview. am i over thinking this that this is not the full engagement that the committee wanted or is this potentially right on target? >> i think it remains to be seen. i mean, you know, i think the movement towards some kind of compromise is a good sign. again, you know, we don't want this to be held up in litigation. it's not good for the committee to end up sitting in court trying to litigate a blanket denial or even sending this to a criminal referral. but i suspect that, you know, they will get some resistance on a lot of lines of questioning. for example, you know, it's clear that meadows doesn't want to answer questions about, for example, whether he was using his personal cell phone on january 6th. some of those specific questions, they may not be able to get information or end up having to litigate, but i think it's still a win even if there's some movement made towards cooperation. >> asha, i want to talk to you about what's going on in congress with people like congresswoman lauren boebert who has made these antimuslim comments and it turns out she's a repeat orcffender. she made these comments against congresswoman ilhan omar, and got caught on video doing it, and it sounds like behind the scenes, kevin mccarthy forced a phone call. it did not go well, that phone call, but now our investigative team turned up that she has been telling this story in different permutations for a while. maybe we have this video to hear her tell it again a couple of months ago. >> one of my staffers on his first day with me got into an elevator in the capitol, and in that elevator, we were joined by ilhan omar. well, it was just us three in there, and i looked over, and i said, well, look at there, it's the jihad squad. >> so it's all so hateful, but i know that from your national security lens, you see it differently. >> yes, alisyn, i think when we see these incidents we're inclined to focus on the substance of what's said, and we should. it's reprehensible, it should be condemned but we fail to look at it as a tactic in a larger strategy. look. this is her stand up routine. and she does it because there is a payoff. and we see that in this video. you know, the media payoff is this is apparently a fundraiser, so she makes money from this. this helps her but the bigger strategy here is this is a way that she solidifies kind of bonding among her base. i mean, they're laughing along. they're in on the joke with her. they now have an enemy against which to target their, you know, frustrations about the government, and it also serves to distract them from the other things that are going on with respect to her in this case. you know, she's in the cross hairs of this january 6th investigation. but she's managed to kind of distract this room who's with her on this joke. so i think we need to start looking at these things like the gosar video, depicting the killing of representative ocasio cortes cortez, as part of a strategy normalizing racism, bigotry, violence, to distract from the things they are not doing and are, you know, basically in trouble for, say with january 6th. >> yeah, and we have seen some would be attackers who have cited the vitriol on capitol hill. there was a man in new york who was arrested who said he wanted to kill ilhan omar and cited what was said about her by some of her colleagues there in washington. thank you so much. >> thank you. we're getting more information now about the breaking news out of michigan where three people, all of them believed to be students, have been killed in a school shooting. we have a live update on what's happening there on the ground next. ♪ limu emu... & doug ♪ ♪ superpowers from a spider bite? >> first of all, as we have all said, as everybody around the country is feeling this, this is another horrible incident that we have to deal with. but more so that it's playing out in one of our cities that me as a former police officer swore to protect, so this really hits the law enforcement community just as hard as it hits the victims and the broader community around these issues. what we know so far as you guys have reported that there might be other victims, that what officers are thinking about right now is the broader public safety and the families of the victims. obviously we want to understand what this 15-year-old individual's motives might have been. but then we have to think about preserving the crime scene. there's a lot going on at play, but i can't stress enough that the officers on the scene responded very quickly. their training kicked in. but more so than anything, right now, they are transitioning into a support role for the families of these victims as we all, our hearts pour out to them from each and every corner of the country right now. >> you can imagine the calls that are going between the parents and now the students trying to find out if they can get through to them. are you okay. and they're doing potentially a third sweep of the school to find out, you know, when sometimes these things happen, the students did leave the building, but some people run to closets, run to safe spaces until someone gets to them. they're going to see if there's anything else there as well. you see first responders leaving the building now. i wonder if you found any special significance in the description of how this suspected shooter responded, that he did not resist, that he stayed silent, he's not talking to the authorities right now, discussing the motive at all. what's that means to you as we've seen shootouts? we've seen barricade situations in other school shootings. >> well, as a trained investigator, and as many other trained investigators will look at this and say, this speaks to a very high level of pre-meditation, victor, that means that this was well thought out, well planned, and that this individual knew that at the point they were going to come into contact with law enforcement, they anticipated, they knew what to do and to say to further this act, and what i mean by further this act is anytime you deal with a suspect that says immediately and what we use in the law enforcement terms of lawyer up, that means this person kind of knows what path they want to take, which again, speaks to a very high level of pre-meditation, which is surprising to hear that coming from a 15-year-old. >> you know, after something like this, we always have these debates in this country, when is the right time to talk about these things, when is the right time to take action, and one thing that you hear pro gun rights people say is well, just put more police in schools. there was a deputy in the school. i believe there was also a deputy in the parkland massacre. i believe there were two cops in the school in columbine. i'll check my facts on that, but my point is you having been a cop, what can an unsuspecting deputy in that moment do in the minutes and seconds when a 15-year-old, you know, bent on a massacre comes in with a semiautomatic rifle. >> well, regardless of age or background, somebody that has a pre-meditated and calculated focus on hurting somebody, the only way we get ahead of that is by knowing the information ahead of time or having some early warning system where we can get better data at the right time to make better decisions and have a more proactive approach. and you have heard me talk about this before. it's talking about how we take law enforcement in this country from a reactive solution to a proactive solution, and that's where i think the broader conversation needs to be focused around, especially on the other side of things like thcis. the other thing i'll say when we think about gun activists in this country, it's all good until it touches your home, your family or one of your loved ones, and we pray this doesn't happen to anyone else, but i hope and pray in my own right that this sparks a sensible conversation about how we move forward to, again, a proactive solution around these things. >> without the cooperation of this suspected shooter, this 15-year-old, talk us through the steps of what they will try to figure out now about motive, why this happened, why it went to the school with a gun. >> well, again, what they really want to think about, and what any law enforcement officer or agent wants to think about in this space is that are there any other imminent attacks? was he a lone wolf. is this a cohort? is this somehow tied to some broader network or organization that has other nefarious intent for other, you know, organizations or schools or things like that or particularly around what we call the, you know, the tender age, you know, schools or socft targets, if yo will, when we think about motive, we want to get down to the fidelity of are there other attacks being planned, and once we get past that point, now we think about preserving the crime scene, processing the crime scene, and really understanding how we get back to how this 15-year-old got a gun in the first place, and then where the hell is his parents at, to be quite frank. >> i was just looking through my notes to see if the under sheriff has told us anything about that, but i think that they think that he operated alone, but i'm just not seeing enough details yet but of course that will come out. dmitry roberts, thank you very much for helping us through this horrible, horrible, breaking news. >> thank you. >> all right. we of course will continue to follow the breaking news there in oxford, michigan. but right now we know that the supreme court tomorrow, the justices will hear arguments about a case that could have major implications for abortion rights across this country. we'll tell you what to expect next. as i observe investors balance risk and reward, i see one element securing portfolios, time after time. gold. your strategic advantage.
