vaccine works in kids. that means children and kindergarten through sixth grade could be getting shots as soon as next week. plus, the fight over facebook. mark zuckerberg fires back after an insider leak, and congress is now trying to figure out how or if it should regulation what you see online. we begin the hour though with important new breaking news about the january 6th select committee and its investigation. cnn is now learning at least five former trump administration staffers voluntarily met with the panel. a big focus of those conversations, we are told, trying to gain insight into the former president's actions leading up to the insurrection. cnn chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins joins us now and is breaking this news. kaitlan, what are you learning? >> yeah, john, this is significant in the fact that these are people who are going in voluntarily to speak with this committee that's investigating what happened that day, and this is because either the committee has reached out to them or vice versa to talk about what it is that they know that was happening inside the west wing, what information did they hear, what were they seeing on that day, of course, as the committee is trying to paint a picture what have happened inside the west wing. a lot of details that we still don't know yet, so we are reporting now that at least five former trump administration staffers have gone in to talk to the committee about this, about january 6th and part of their investigation, but we're also learning that the committee has already reached out to a range of other former trump administration staffers to see if they would also like to come in and talk to the committee about what they saw that day, what they were hearing, of course, before, during and after what happened on january 6th, and so we don't know what exactly has been told and what has been discussed in these sit-downs with the committee, what has been discussed in these conversations, but it is significant because their conversations could potentially help the committee figure out more details about what was happening that day. we should be clear. this is different than the subpoenas that you have seen that have come for mark meddo, steve bannon, several of the other former top trump administration officials who they want to speak to, of course. we've seen how that fight has played out with steve bannon where he's refused to cooperate with the committee. he's defied that congressional subpoena. it's still being worked out what's happening with mark meadows and kash patel and scan scavino, the other top officials that were inside the white house on that day and this is happening on a voluntary basis. i think when you talk to people there's a range of reasons for why they would like to go and sit down. of course, this has been a big concern from some of the former staffers about what they can be legally compelled to do. would there also be a subpoena for them and some of them clearly just want to share information about what they know that day so it is significant that five of the former trump administration staffers have gone in to speak to the january 6th committee. >> kaitlan, stand bit. let me bring in to share their own reporting and insight, cnn's dana park and "the wall street journal"'s party and it's significant for a number of reasons. it's harder for someone else to say no. if a committee is building a case and has a lot of information, if you go to court and try to say i have some secret and privileged information, i shouldn't be told to share there, and he's sharing, he's sharing and she's sharing, what's your excuse? the voluntary engagement of the staffers could change the dynamic in a big way. >> it could in court but most importantly in the short term the information-gathering. you don't necessarily have to be mark meadows the former white house chief of staff to have information about what was going on. kaitlan's excellent reporting here is that there are five former staffers, and they range in level from junior staffer to more senior staff, and we all know the way that the former president operate. there were people who were in and around what was going on who wouldn't necessarily be in a more traditional white house. so, yes, it's about precedent-setting. it's about arguments that they can make in court, assuming that they do go to court to compel people like steve bannon, but it's also about building the information and the case that they are making for what actually happened. >> and a reminder of how a west wing operates in the sense that, yes, you have the former president. you have his chief of staff who they are trying to get, to his deputy communications director, social media guy, right-hand man steve scavino and steve bannon who was in contact with the former president and you have a number of staffers who see and know and get the documents. they note schedule. they note phone calls. they are around. that's something that we forgot sometimes when we focus on the big players. the white house is a pretty small operation, junior and mid-level people know a lot. >> that's absolutely right. it remains to be seen exactly the kind of information that these junior level staffers will, have but i think as the subpoena fight plays out, we've seen in the past few years how congress has power to conduct these investigations has really erode and some of these fights could take a real long time. meantime, some of this information could really help fill the gaps with the committee depending on the information that's actually presented to them. >> and interesting, kaitlan noting that the conversations are not just about january 6th but also about the days and potentially weeks before january 6th because the committee has made clear it's not just what the president, former president did or didn't do that day when his open vice president was under threat at the cap to. they want to know his conversations. did he know who was coming? did he know there was a possibility of violence? did he know who was financing the operation? >> i think this is definitely a significant development for the january 6th committee really trying to get to the bottom of this. president trump, he's trying to make sure that people don't talk about this. he's trying to invoke executive privilege. we've seen biden isn't having that and is allowing his justice department to not take that as an argument. i think it's just a pretty big development in that people from the trump administration are voluntarily complying with the committee that we saw that house republicans didn't really want to see to begin with, kevin mccarthy and other republican leaders are really trying to make sure that this didn't happen, that this committee didn't form. he called adam kinzinger and liz cheney republicans, and i think it's important that people are voluntarily willing to come forward to share information about january 6th but also what was president trump doing in the days leading up to that. what did he know? >> and we know how the former president operates, and we know what is likely to happen in his world and in his mind when he hears five former staffers cooperating, at least engaging in communicating with the january 6th committee. >> right. he's going to try to lock it down and get these people not to talk and figure out who is talk and, you know, raise threats for other people not to talk, but i think the point that people are talking is a good one and the timeline is important, too. as much as the republicans wanted this to go away and as much as they have tried to rewrite the history on when happened that day, the fact that this is still ongoing shows that that's going to be harder for them to do, and it's not clear exactly how much voters want to hear about this. there's been some polling that indicates that voters would rather put this behind them, too, but new information can change public information pretty fast and it's certainly something that's very motivating for democratic voters at a time when democrats really need any additional enthusiasm they can get for their base, you know, as they look down the road to the mid terms that are expected to be quite difficult. >> not to sound too pollyanna. we're inside politics to see how this will affect the political election that's coming next, but this is about understanding what happened for history's sake. >> right. >> and the biggest attack on the united states capitol and on democracy in maybe ever. >> right, and to that paint, kaitlan collins, i think you're still with us. nolan just mentioned this. the former president has tried to claim a privilege that the biden white house says does not exist. we'll get to the legal parts that have down the road, but that in and of itself and all the statements he eeshs udobi in commit, he's sent very clear signals to everybody around him i'm not cooperate, and i expect you not to cooperate which is what makes this significant. >> yeah, even to the point where his attorney has sent a letter to those subpoenaed saying do not cooperate, whether that's giving testimony or documents because we believe you're covered by various amounts of privilege that they listed in the letter, and so this is different in the sense that these are people that are doing this voluntarily. they are fearful of getting a subpoena, that maybe they just want to share information but what we do know is that the former president is ready to engage in a legal battle balance this to where he's gone as far as sue the january 6th committee and sue the national archives because they have also tried to get documents related to that day, whether it's from call logs or other various forms that they believe could help them piece together what was happening inside the west wing. the former president has made clear what his stance is on this and whether or not he thinks people should go in and speak to them or even more formally cooperate on a level, but i think that this shows there's a disconnect of how to handle this in trump world. some people want to provide the information of what they know that day, whether it's significant or something potentially small that could help the committee and people also want to avoid any kind of legal trouble. there isn't a monolithic view in trump's world of how to handle this. they are pretty split of people who don't work in the white house, don't work for the former president anymore and are trying to figure out the best option. >> and it's crystal clear that the biden local team has said no. when asked they have said no to trump requests for executive privilege. they will go to court and the former president will decide. mostly the privilege lies with the existing sitting president, protects the institution and the biden white house -- the biden legal team saying they do not believe it's in the national interest to deny the committee these documents. you made an important point. this is looking back at last election and the aftermath of that election in a horrific violent day at the united states capitol to try to block the implementation of the last election but if you look forward. president biden also drawing a contrast to how the former president conducts himself in a new appointment. he's naming a member to the department homeland. kim wayman was a frequent guest on this program last year. one of the reasons biden likes her and one of the reasons trump won't is this. >> you're a reap karng the nation's top republican saying fraud, saying rigged, saying things that frankly are wrong, correct? >> that's correct, and every time president trump takes a swing at absentee ballot or vote by mail ballots it undermines voters' confidence so election officials have even more work to do. >> 14 or 15 states owe essentially put new restrictions in place. you have questions raised, unnecessary questions, questions that are not based in fact, raised by the former president about the innegative elections. how significant that the democratic president is picking a republican state official to essentially be the clearing house? she's held in incredible high regard by election officials and administrators around the country. >> it's really significant and an effort to show that the need to protect investigate and protect democracy like dana was talking about needs to be a bipartisan one despite the fact that -- the republican party, all sort of levels of the party, are trying to implement these restrictions that would really curtail investigate and under the guise of election integrity and even says the that once parades how their election was won, people talking about how they are going to protect voting, she's particularly interesting because she was the vocal supporter of mail ballots, something that is growing more in popularity and something that we'll see more of. >> you explore this issue in a do youor new documentary and to lei's states that trump won, they want to go back and audit that because they didn't like the turnout in houston or the dallas suburbs. you gid that what happens in the last election is not over and it's care everything over into the next election. >> we want to restore confidence we all have in our election. i don't think it was lost in texas. i don't think it has to be in jeopardy of being lost in texas. >> why are you saying, why are you saying that it's free and fair? the only wayne i would do that because people have been acnoij? >> in the political zeitgeist, that's hanging over right now. >> a cytologist per tetated by the former president and his allies. we had a rigged election, a stolen election. >> the bigger picture is beyond donald trump. it is the changing demographics of the country. >> it is striking. you have a republican state legislate okay essentially my translate, a big eye and enough republicans believe it and we're going to ask on it anyway. i heard bigger things. it's striking to hear them say it's not necessarily important whatity sea many. they believe joe biden was owe elected and don't believe there was widespread fraud but they are acting on president bush sure they are feeling frrlg their republican base and they are being lied to. it's the tail wagging with the dog in every way, hape and number forms. it's a wagging the party. what is the cost of changes to the new voting law? is that a red line for had you? not only is there division on the policy still but, again, on the process. replaying this debate that the democrats had back in september. the liberals want the larger bill agreed to, signed off on and approved by the house at the same time as that separate $1 at any time 2 trillion infrastructure bill that has been awaiting final house action for months, but manchin and sinema that called for that infrastructure bill to pass the house this week, so it's unclear exactly how this plays out, john. will it be another punt? we'll have to see but the house democratic leaders are racing to figure out a way out of this. >> important breaking news on the hill. keep us posted throughout the hour. the panel is back with me. this is complicated for the president. number one, vat have a's governor's race and we count the vote and he goes overseas in a couple of days and he wants to say i'm getting things done on the economy and a big climate deal and all of that is tbd. the progressives are saying, mr. president, we would love to give you what you need, but on that bipartisan infrastructure bill, what the president had hoped for is reach a framework, handshake and write it down on the big deal and get a vote this week on the bipartisan infrastructure bill, presumably to help the politics of virginia and progressives are saying no. >> i'm hearing from multiple progressive sources saying that that's not going to happen, and i know manu has been doing reporting on this as well and when i say that's not going to happen, what i mean is it's kind of back to the future. this is kind of where the whole debate within and among democrats started. would they take up and vote on the -- the infrastructure bill, the roads and bridges, traditional infrastructure bill that passed several months ago in the senate with a big bipartisan vote. would they take it up now and even this week before the president goes away, and the answer still is no, and the reason is because. trust deficit, particularly among many progressives who just don't believe that a framework is enough of -- enough to give them to make sure that what they -- at least what they want -- what they wanted is half of it is not going to be there, but at least what they are being told they will get is really in there. >> and that trust deficit from ilhan omar from politico today. progressives are troubled and deeply concerned with the cuts we're seeing report. they are saying their votes need to be earned and support for a deal that does not adequately fund their priorities is not guaranteed so you have -- look, it's only three votes nancy pelosi can lose. can't lose any in the senate. can only lose three in the house f.bernie sanders sun happy, the one way to get ilhan omar is if bernie sanders goes over to house progressives saying this is the best we can get and if he's unhappy and progressives want to seat final text, we're not close enough yet. >> right. bernie sanders and the senate essentially has just as much power as joe manchin when it comes to whether or not we see this bill actually become law and make it to president joe biden's desk. somebody has to cave, will it be the moderates or progressives? when you look at the debate progressives have been very transparent about the five priorities whereas when you look at senator manchin and sinema, manchin has gotten credit for being transparent, has his $1.5 trillion top line and negotiating in good faith and senator sinema, what are you saying for weeks what do you want and jimmy gomez was talking with a gaggle of reporters and basically said to the two senators stop talking. stop f'ing talk. he wants to figure out what's going to be in the legislation so they can figure out when they can vote on it. >> the tensions are real, and sometimes, you know, we make politics of it. it is good drama and sometimes they come from different places, so alexandria ocasio-cortez campaigns back home. well, her district is a lot more liberal than joe marnazin's in west virginia or kyrsten sinema in arizona. they have a basic framework that includes universal pre-k, affordable housing funds and obamacare extensions. now a clean electricity program is put out. they will have a climate package. free community college appears to be gone from this. medicare coverage for dental appears to be gone one of the reasons that bernie sanders, may be a voucher program until there. is lost in this the idea that if you add up the first covid bill and the bipartisan one, let's say it's 12k4r5r.5 trillion to 1.75 trillion that's still a lot of democratic agenda that gets lost in the idea that the two sides are fighting with each other. >> and the administration might have misplayed their hand a little bit. remember, biden came in and everyone was talking about a narrative that the administration themselves helped foster. he would be the next fdr. he was going to do these really big things and this is a really big bill, but it feels a lot smaller than what the initial proposal was, so there is a sense that the perception could be that it's less. i think they also made a choice for a lot of political reasons, you know, that mick sense, particularly their razor thin majorities to try to eskengsly package the entire domestic agenda in one giant bill rather than do it piece male. thought it best to get it done before you get into the politics of the mid terms and now there's questioning about whether that was the right choice, and like what is going -- what can be done that's left out of this is, and can biden fulfill the kind of campaign promises that were big and bold that he laid out in his run? >> how important from the white house perspective, how important is it this idea that he's getting on air force one and going overseas? he would like to be carrying a gift with him. >> sure works and we heard from jen psaki today there's still two days left and phones on air force one and in europe. he'll be engaged but when negotiations started stalling out. we saw urgency from the white house. the president invited lawmakers over. there's a momentum and now that they are on the vernal of the dole there's still some major unresolved issues here and what role can the president now play? can he bring back that same momentum and sense of urgency that we saw last week to close this deal out? >> and just adding real quick, the notion in -- if you are bernie sanders initially pushing the $7 trillion that's pie in the skies, let's be honest and the notion of not expanding medicare to include hearing for seniors, to include dental, to include vision, the notion that you will not have something in there that al lourts for negotiating the price of prescription drugs, which is wildly popular, but because joe manchin is saying it is just too expensive right now. it will cost too much and it will deplete the medicare trust fund unimore than it is, that's the reason that you saw a very angry bernie sanders talking to manu rajus, earlier. >> he came up short two times and got millions of votes in two campaigns, campaigning on those very issues. >> he thinks he has a mandate. >> we're not there yet. i keep thinking we're in the red zone using a football met afoyer. coming up, decision day. the fda advisory panel is meeting right now and votes today on authorizing pfizer's vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. plus, take a look here. thousands of new york city workers protest the city's vaccine man day. friday is the deadline. be vaccinated or go without pay. benefits and i think it needs to be said that children in this age group of 5 to 11 do become ill from covid-19. there have been 1.9 million cases of covid in this age group. over 8,000 children have coming back down. 28 million in the 5 to 11 age group. if a sizable percentage of that 28 million are eligible for vaccines starting sometime next week, what is the potential impact on the current trajectory? i think it will certainly make a difference for the trajectory overall because we'll have many more millions of children who will be vaccinated and we also know that children can be vectors of transmission for their family and community and although i don't think this is the main reason about getting kids vaccinated. not right to ask children to sacrifice for others. that's not the reason that we want children to be vaccinated. we want children to be vaccinated to protect them and also because by having kids being vaccinated it will keep them in school. prevent them from guess is a better way to put, it as the trajectory comes down, if you're unvaccinated, things are getting better, i don't need to? >> yeah. in fact, that's what we've seen before happen as well that when things look better and restrictions are moved, the unvaccinated lose whatever motivation they may have had to get vaccinated versus the middle of the delta surge that we saw an uptick in candidate who worried out loud recently that the president's sagging poll numbers might cause him to lose. joining our conversation to discuss the state of the party at the moment democratic pollster anna greenberg. great to have you here. >> thank you. >> let's start with virginia. it's a great, what's the right word, terry mcauliffe said i might lose because the president sun popular. >> right. >> the support there tonight to try to help terry mcauliffe. >> yes. >> what does virginia mean? why is it so close and what does it mean nationally? >> certainly it's a belle weather. everyone looks to virginia to see what might happen in 2022. if terry mcauliffe doesn't win there will be a lot of panicky democrats including me if you think about what happens in 2022. i think we would expect to see a drop-off of interest and enthusiasm after we had our biggest two years, you know, in modern history in 2018 and 2020. not a surprise that enthusiasm and participation seems more muted, especially among democrats. the question is is it enough that would allow youngkin to win? i would note something that i just read today. the number of people who have voted absentee is six times higher than it was four years ago. now we know that the patterns have changed and democrats are more likely to vote early and less likely to vote on election day so i'm not suggesting that's predictive of any outcome but it's astonishing how many more people are voting this time around than four years ago. >> how much an impact? this is the here and now. this is the president's approval, an average. our poll of polls takes the most recent polls and average them together. the president's approval rating is down to 44% and his disapproval rating is at 50%. >> right. >> if a year from now, the president's numbers are like that, good-bye house, good-bye senate and a lot of governor's races. is that enough to sink ter mcauliffe, the president's approval rating alone? >> well, i don't think so, because at the end of the day virginia is still a blue state and the dynamics, the shift of suburban voters over the last four years to the democratic party there, he's no evidence that that's changed. if anything, whether it's the texas abortion law, the big lie, anti-vax sentiment, if anything voters are even more democratic. suburban majority and minority voters in virginia keeps that state blue. geography is everything. approval ratings are not digs positive when it comes to different parts of the country. >> before you came on the air you were saying you yourself were a little nervous right now. >> sure. >> but you hope there's time to change. the support trying to get his giant agenda passed. a lot of things not only popular with democrats but a lot of things popular with voters across the spectrum but we asked in our poll last month. the biden agenda makes your family only half of democrats say better off. 45% of democrats say the same. what has happened? where is the failed messaging or communications if among your friends, people who are inclined to support the president and the party, nearly half, 45% say it won't make a difference. >> i mean, there's clearly a failure of messaging about this pack. a that being said, part of challenge is we don't know what's going to be in it yet. for example, let's say you lean into some particular provision and this gets cut out, that's already happening so i think that that is obviously, you know, problematic. democrats to some extent are driving that. you know, senator manchin and sinema so it's not like it's necessarily republicans making it difficult to message on the package but when you don't know what's going to be in it very difficult to explain to people how it will affect their lives direct. >> i if you look at the president now, a lot of democrats are having eerie flashbacks to president obama, approval ratings down a little bit, legislative agenda in limbo and democrats got wiped out in the first obama mid-term. is that the terrain today and what needs to change? >> i don't know if it's necessarily wipeout, but obviously everybody knows that generally speaking the party in party doesn't do well in the first mid terms so i'd be foolish to suggest that we're not in some trouble. that being said, i think there are things that are different. for example, obamacare is different than this package. obamacare was not something that most people used. in this package almost everybody gets some benefit from it. that's very, very different. second of all, tons of pent-up demand which is leading to inflation in the short run but it's entirely possible next year we're in a very different economic situation. >> we'll bring you back as that year plays out. >> now it looks bleak but i've been at this the a long time. things can change. >> absolutely. >> anna, grateful for your time. >> a pulitzer prize winning novel becomes a hotly contested topic in what we were just talking about, vat have a's governor's race. i also love cooking with heart-healthy, idaho potatoes. always look for the grown in idaho seal. betty is saving big, holiday shopping at amazon. "beloved" is now part of that debate. this week glenn youngkin's campaign released an ad that took that all the way to the state assembly after she said it gave her high school-aged son nightmares. >>
