we begin with breaking news. one of the biggest names in the nfl has resigned after a series of newly released emails showed him frequently and over several years making homophobic, racist, and misogynistic comments. overnight jon gruden announced his resignation from the raiders hours after "the new york times" published details from emails gruden sent over a period of seven years. they were discovered in an nfl workplace misconduct investigation into the washington football team. they showed gruden denouncing female referees, the drafting of a gay player, and the tolerance of players protesting the national anthem during the national anthem. gruden said he never meant to hurt anyone but he did not exclusively apologize for the disparaging comments. joining me live with more on this, omar? >> jon gruden one of the biggest names in the nfl, one of the highest paid and all this is unearth. "the new york times" and "wall street journal" reviewed emails from gruden showing he used homophobic, misogynistic, racist language referring to some of the biggest names as part of the nfl, specifically releasing a statement as he resigned saying in his departure, i love the raiders and don't want to be a distraction. thank you to all the players, coaches, and staff and fans of raider nation. i'm sorry. i never meant to hurt anyone. but when you look at the emails, spanning 2011 to 2018 as an espn analyst, he used racist language to describe nfl players association executive director demaurice smith during the backout over the collective bargaining negotiations, "the times" showing he criticized the team drafting an openly gay player in 2014 in michael sam, used homophobic language to describe roger goodell. a league source confirmed to cnn the accuracy of "the times" reporting and reached out to gruden, the nfl, raiders, and we haven't gotten a response just yet. but amid all these homophobic comments coming to light, the ironic part of all of this is the first active nfl player to come out in history plays for the raiders. we haven't heard from him just yet on snocial media or otherwise. in the email reported by "the wall street journal" about the head of the players association, jon gruden responded saying i'm not a racist. these emails to say otherwise. >> omar, than you. joining me for more is cnn's sport analyst, christine brennan, a sports columnist for "usa today," and car ran phillips. thanks for being here, guys. christine, what do you think of gruden's resignation, everything that's come to light, the apology, the fact he resigned rather than got fired over this? >> kate, this is a crisis for the national football league, which you said is the most powerful and important league in the country. this is absolutely appalling on a human level, and it's just absolutely unacceptable not at any time but certainly in 2021, well into the 21st century. when you think about it, jon gruden was the face of the league on "monday night football." he was -- he was welcomed into people's living rooms or family rooms or dens to watch the game. so he really was a representative in a way that even as a coach he isn't and wasn't. what he did was disparage and denigrate absolutely everything and everyone the national football league needs business wi business-wise to move forward and be successful in the 21st century. it is terrible as a human being and absolutely terrible for the nfl's business. 45% of the fan base of the nfl, according to, you know, studies and reports, about 45% is women and girls. and of course the league is 70% black. obviously gay people, women, people of color, everything. it is so essential that the national football league has those people moving forward. if they turn off the nfl, there is no nfl moving forward. >> as omar pointed out, carl plays on the team. the first active nfl player to publicly declare he's gay. what's your take on this? >> well, i go back to right before the season started and carl came out and the nfl released this promo video and their statement was, you know, football is for everyone, football is gay, as if, like, we didn't know that this sport that children play isn't for everyone already. just like we're seeing touched on, every demographic besides straight white men were in the crosshairs of jon gruden over the ears with these emails. but the question i'm wondering as i think about this is what's going to come down the pipeline later because this all came out through, you know, the investigation into the washington football team. what else is in those emails? what else does the league know that the league hasn't told us? and that is the thing that's interesting to me, because, yes, while we're waiting to see what carl is going to say, i feel like there's going to be a lot more that comes up from this investigation and from these emails. i want to see what carl nas sif says. >> you raise an important bit here, because to reiterate, this came out about the nfl investigation of workplace misconduct into the washington football team. more than 650,000 emails were turned over. what you're looking at is several years that this was going on and just now this is coming out because of this investigation. carron, is it realistic for anything to think if this is coming out from someone who wasn't even the target of said investigation to think that this is the only action that's going to be -- that's going to come from this investigation that began with nothing to do with gruden? >> well, look, if you're expecting roger goodell or the nfl to go abilout the right way then you're dreaming. this is a league that just got done with brainstorming where they were trying not to pay back plaque players, and for anyone who doesn't know what that is, google it to let you know how bad it is. the cte stuff with the nfl. the player demonstrations kneeling during the national anthem. we've seen how they've treated women and the faux patriotism. the nfl is very, very good at trying to hide the dirt they willing do, so now when you have something like this that was an investigation into the washington football team, and we know everything that happened with that and how bad that was, and that was just last year, now we're expecting to learn more and the nfl knew about this stuff for years? like i said before, that is what's so concerning about it. you know, shout-out to "the new york times" and "the wall street journal" for doing the great reporting to let us know that all of this stuff was going on, because without those reporters and journalists, we wouldn't know about any of this. >> christine, with this in this moment with what happened with gruden, i mean, is the nfl drawing a clear and bright line in any way, do you think, a bright line saying you cannot be a coach in this league and say this kind of stuff? >> certainly, kate, with the fact that he's gone and he resigned, yes, that he is gone. carron makes excellent points, and one is why does the nfl get out in front of this? although that train has long since left the station. but get out in front of what we don't know and come forward and tell us what's in those other emails. is this systemic? is this going to be one of the great scandals in sports of the year or of our time even if, in fact, we find that there are more owners and team presidents and others who are respected in the league if they, in fact, participated or also said things like this? let's find out. so let's have the nfl, have roger goodell, get up front, tell everybody what else in in those emails. don't let it leak out. let's find out now and how bad it is. but absolutely, this is a crisis for the national football league p, no doubt about it, and the question is how deep does it go. >> christine, carron, thanks, guys. appreciate it. another big name facing criticism for making offensive comments, comedian dave chappelle. this morning netflix is defending the comedian over the outcry over his new special that includes several minutes of insults and insensitive jokes about transgender people. let me bring in brian stelter. he's been tracking this for us. brian, first and foremost, what is netflix saying? >> very little in public, but in the message to staffers that has now leaked out, netflix co-ceo ted sarandos defends the special and chappelle. this is a portion of an email obtained by with the variety." he said several of you have asked where we draw the line on hate . so in other words, the audience has spoken, he is saying. now, this has been an issue inside netflix for the past several days. there have been employees at netflix who have spoken out against the special saying it does cross a line and should not be on the platform. one employee, who is transexclusionary radical feminists, was suspended by the company, and that caused him to say this person was not suspended because of the criticism on twitter. this person was suspended because they -- apparently three employees tried to attend a virtual meeting of the company's senior leadership, tried to listen in and crash the meeting and thus those three employees have been suspended. that gives you a sense of the internal pressure inside netflix. we've heard from groups including glad, saying it is absolutely true that anti-lgbtq+ speech does create violence and they should live up to its own standards. go on rotten tomatoes, look at the views for the special, they're overwhelmingly positive. we're hearing criticism of the special but a lot of fans and that tug of war continues. >> kind of bring these two top stories together, right. we just talked about jon gruden, two very different people and two very different professions. they're not the same. this is happening at the same time. what do you see is the distinction in the broader sense of what's okay, what's not, in entertainment and the workplace? >> first of all, a hollow phrase like cancel culture doesn't begin to say what's going on in these institutions. netflix is saying we have taken this seriously. we have been thoughtful about these matters. we know it's complicated. we are listening and taking it seriously. gruden, nothing thoughtful about gruden's hateful emails. they were thoughtless. of course also private and netflix's decisions are very public. i think ultimately it's a question about intent, kate, the intent, what was the intent for jon gruden, for dave chappelle. but there's this ongoing debate about intent versus impact. what matters for, someone's intent, acting in good faith or the impact of the worlds? that is the through line here, where whether it's jon gruden's emails leaking out in a mysterious way or dave chappelle's comedy that hurts some people. what's more important, intent or impact? >> good to see you, brian. thank you. that's the bill that the senate passed last week. the expectation is that the house democrats are also going to have to begin those tough discussions about what will be included in their bigger social safety net bill and what is going to be on the cutting room floor. this is the disagreement the democrats have been having privately and sometimes publicly over and over again over the last several weeks. and the expectation right now is that house speaker nancy pelosi may be moving in a direction where the democrats include fewer programs in their legislation but in a more full and fully funded way. here's what she said in a letter last night. she said, "overwhelmingly the guidance i am receiving from members is to do fewer things well so that we can still have a transformative impact on families in the workplace and responsibly address the climate crisis. a build back better agenda for jobs and the planet for the children! at the same time, we must lift the debt ceiling and hope we can have a unanimous democratic vote and perhaps a vote to do so. this is coming because the speaker knows she only has a three-vote margin, meaning she can only lose three of her own members and pass this legislation. as you know, progressives and moderates have different views about what exactly should be included in this legislation as well as what the top-line number should be with moderates arguing that this bill might be around $2 trillion and progressives arguing they'd like to see it at $3.5 trillion. the speaker clear here that some cuts are going to have to be made. the decisions of course, still to be determined. kate? >> absolutely. lauren, thank you for that. as lauren is laying out, the debt crisis is just one of several major challenges facing the biden administration. the president's entire domestic agenda remains stalled at this moment. and there are huge questions about how long democrats maintain that razor-thin majority lauren spoke about in both chambers and what the broader picture looks like with the democracy in crisis. joining me for perspective is cnn chief political correspondent co-host of "state of the union" dana bash. the opening line from our colleague steven collins' analysis kind of cuts through the talking points and minutia and looking at the reality biden is facing when he writes, "presidents get into trouble when they're seen as controlled by events rather than the other way around," because it's not just one thing, right? it's a global crises that can't get fixed quickly, political fights that are always there but also brought on by some of biden's choices. what does this add up to for the president right now? >> potential trouble. first of all, you're right. steven collinson writes so beautifully every single morning and this was even for him kind of a zenith because he put it all in perspective. it's so hard because there is so much coming at us as reporters and as consumers of the news and as just basic americans and voters. and so the idea and the notion of looking at it through the reality that there is a lot that is out of any president's control, but it is especially true right now for this president. what the white house and what democrats who are in charge in congress will say quietly and sometimes even publicly is that once they get through the big votes that have been delayed and delayed on the president's agenda, infrastructure, which was bipartisan in the senate, we'll see what happens when it gets a vote in the house, and the social safety net bill, that the ted lasso goldfish scenario, that that will kick in, that people will forget all of the tense moments and the anxiety among democrats right now in washington to get all that passed. but that's a big leap, especially given the fact that there are other things, and if you kind of look back to when you and i were covering congress together during the obamacare fight, yes, they got it done, it was difficult, it was ultimately popular and successful, but what it meant when they passed it in 2009 was 2010 you had kind of awoken an opposition that brought in republican majorities in the house and not that year in the senate but big majority in the house. the thing that democrats are quietly worried about is all this toing and free oing will m the elections difficult on democrats. >> you've raised terry mcauliffe, running in this tight race for governor of virginia, and he spoke to another aspect of mounting problems that biden is facing, which is culture clashes that obviously we see often in politics, and they are often exasperated by campaigns. i want to play what he told you on sunday. >> he's trying to do a backdoor deal. he talks about this critical race theory. to be honest, we don't have critical waste theory taught in virginia. >> mccauliff is talking about his race, but biden is facing this as well. >> it's true. this is something that republican campaigns starting with the one that is right in front of us, the virginia's governor race, and it is certainly being planned for republican campaigns in swing districts and in toss-up states, all across the country, is using this culture clash, this culture war or as republicans call it, wokeness run amok, to their advantage because as much as there is a very real progressive wing that is pushing, pushing, pushing the democratic party to be more forward leaning on these issues, there is also a reality that there are people who are representing -- lawmakers who are representing less progressive districts and states. and those voters are hearing republicans saying, wait a minute, look at all of these things that their kids are being taught, which, true or not, that's what they're hearing. look at the way that society is changing. look at the fact that there is a superman comic now where the -- you know, the son of superman lois lane is bisexual. a lot of people are applauding that, absolutely. but i guarantee you republicans are going to use that -- and they are using that kind of thing to warn people about the change in culture. it's a very difficult situation for both parties but especially democrats, especially moderates like terry mcauliffe because you don't want to anger the left wing of your party. whether you agree with it or not, it's very tricky. >> one thing that's not tricky is truth. but that seems to be tricky right now. another challenge the country is facing is this continued push by so many republicans to adhere to and look beyond the big lie. chuck grassley is the latest example. speaking out against trump's role after the insurrection but also accepting trump's endorsement happy this weekend. let me play this. >> judging what he's done. that sort of insurrection is unaccountable and the president's comments didn't help the matter. it made it worse. >> i was born at night but not last night. so if i didn't accept the endorsement of a person that's got 91% of the republican voters in iowa, i wouldn't be too smart. and i'm smart enough to accept that endorsement. >> i was struck by that, what he said this weekend. he's almost saying everything at once. i may not be excited about trump's endorsement, but i do need it. this seems to be the position of almost all republican politicians. if so, this isn't a past problem look at the big lie in the past, it's a present problem. >> it's absolutely a present problem because the issues we were talking about before, which are real policy and cultural debates in this country, whether it's about how much to spend, where inflation is, the cultural shift, that's all legitimate. but republicans, a lot of republicans i talk to who are not in elected office but are more traditional republicans, say we don't have the luxury to have that debate if we can't even agree on a fundamental truth and that is what happened in the 2020 election, and that is a huge continuing problem for republicans with trump >> kate, this has huge implications for every single business waking up this morning in the state of texas that is trying to keep its employees and staff safe here. look, they face now a $1,000 fine if they try to get one of their employees vaccinated. think about it. even a hospital now faces a fine if they try to have a vaccine mandate. he doesn't make any exceptions. there are no carveouts here. and legally, this flies in the face of president biden's vaccine mandate. so oun n legal ground the gover is in a tricky spot because the supremacy clause, federal law trumps state law. the justice department could take the governor to court and may, in fact, win. the governor has been sued over his prohibitions on vaccine mandates in schools before. those are still winding their way through the courts. but politically, kate, here, he may not care if he's on strong legal ground because, remember, the governor here is facing a primary challenge in march. he has primary challengers who have been trolling him about trying to go further on vaccine mandates, even though the governor has been -- he has been -- he's been vaccinated for covid himself. but somehow he doesn't want it mandated for other people. his opponents have been pushing him, others on the right pushing him to go even further. we'll see how this plays out. i want to play out, 65% of texans support vaccine mandates in their state. so while the governor is doing this, he is out of step with the majority of people in the state. >> he's not speaking to a majority with what he's trying to send as a message here. great to see you, laura. thank you. also developing this hour, a major national task force is proposing recommending against taking a daily aspirin to cut the risk of heart disease and stroke if you are over the age of 60. it's part of new recommendations issued moments ago by the group that ultimately really sets the norms for what treatments and tests are implemented by doctors and clinicians nationwide and also typically covered by insurance. joining me now is dr. chen wen sang, a member of the u.s. preventative services task force, the task force i'm talking about issuing this proposed guidance. thanks for being here. this potentially impacts millions of people. the most recent number i saw was at least 29 million americans take low-dose aspirin every day for this very reason, this prevention reason. and previously this warning of do not do this has been for people age 70 plus. now 60 plus. why? what did you all see? >> okay. thanks for having us here. you know, this is so important. it's really talking about the role of aspirin in preventing that first heart attack or stroke. so we actually still do see some benefits for people ages 40 to 59. but that benefit is smaller. you're right, you have to weigh it against the risk or harms of bleeding from aspirin. for ages 40 to 59 we recommend that people still consider aspirin but talk about it with their clinician first to make hurt it's the right match and that the harms are not always like the benefits. for people age 60 and older, we recommend against starting aspirin because the risk of bleeding increases with age, and starting at age 60, the harms cancel out the benefits. >> if i'm -- just to dig into it because there are a lot of people watching who obviously take a daily dose and everyone's medical history is their own, but if i'm 63 years old and on a daily dose regimen of aspirin for prevention, what should i do today, doctor? should i stop? >> absolutely not. so this is really important to know that this is a recommendation about whether or not to start aspirin to prevent the first heart attack or stroke for people who aren't actually on aspirin yet. if somebody started taking aspirin already or is on aspirin because they've had a heart attack or stroke, we don't want them to stop. they should talk to their clinicians if they have concerns about whether or not to continue aspirin but don't stop on their own. >> this comes down to weighing benefits against risks as so many medical procedures and medicines are, that's what you have to weigh. what are you seeing in terms of the risks that got you all to a place of changing these guidelines? >> well, aspirin is used safely by millions of people, but there is the potential risk of bleeding so if somebody has issues of stomach ulcers or bleeding in the brain or on blood thinners, other health conditions, too, there definitely can be more risk. we want people to be aware of that. there's also the potential benefits so the benefits are smaller now to start aspirin to prevent the first heart attack or stroke are still there. it's really important for people to know to talk to their clinicians. so find out, one, are they at increased risk for heart attack or stroke, and two, whether or not aspirin's benefits outweigh the risks. >> this is draft guidance, not the final word if you will. do you believe this will be the final word? >> i think et has merit. yes, i do think it has merit, but in the meantime we're going to pass a bill today to take us to december with the hope that when people realize what the implications are -- this is not a technical thing. this has ramifications, as i say, from the kitchen table to our economy to global >> madam speaker, one of the items proposed in the big back better build is irs cracking down on taxes. banks are getting calls from customers. they are concerned about this tracking of transactions that is greater than $600. so americans are starting to be worried about this. do you think that this pay for of giving the irs more money of cracking down on you be paid taxes is going to stay in the reconciliation bill? >> yes. >> what do you say to americans who are concerned about this? >> yes, yes. i mean, with all due respect, the plural of anecdote is not data. i've said that before here. yes, there are concerns that some people have, but if people are breaking the law and not paying their taxes, one way to track them is through the banking measure. i think $600 -- that's a negotiation that will go on as to what the amount is, but, yes. >> speaker -- you in the front row. >> thank you, madam speaker. our latest cbs news poll shows that only 10% of americans describe themselves as knowing a lot of specific things that are in the reconciliation package and that a majority don't know anything at all, so do you think you need to do a better job at messaging and going forward how do you sell this if ultimately -- >> i think y'all could do a better job of selling it to be very frank with you, because every time i come here i go through the list. family medical leave, the issues that are in there, but it is true, it is hard to break through when you have such a comprehensive package, but as we narrow it down and put it out there, i think, for example, one of the things in the bill is the continuation of the biden tax credit -- child tax credit that is in the -- that was in the rescue package. that has great appeal. do people know where it springs from? no. but it is a vast bill. it has a lot in it, and we'll have to continue to make sure the public does, but whether they know it or not, they overwhelmingly support it, and by the way, women much more than men. men like the infrastructure. yeah. >> what would be the first to go to get the price of the package down in. >> excuse me. >> what would be the first to go to get the price of the package down? >> you must be kidding. that's a negotiation. that's not something i would be announcing here, and i don't even know what that would be. what would be the first to go? probably in timing that the -- that the timing would be reduced in any cases to make the costs lower, but it only would be in such a way that does not undermine the transformative nature of it, because some of it has to have enough money in order to be -- to have sustainability that is -- that can be counted on, so, again, first thing would be timing. thank you. thank you all. oh, by the way, i have to go. i have a foreign minister coming to my office now. he's in washington for meetings with the administration, and i will have a bipartisan meeting with him and perhaps some of you will even attend our press availability in a short period, but it's pretty exciting to welcome here to once again take great pride in the relationship between israel and the united states, that israel's security is essential to u.s. security, that we have those shared values, security, security, security, but also values and to talk about some of the -- >> we're listening to house speaker nancy pelosi on the very latest of what's happening today and what is going to happen when it comes to the big spending bill going forward. she says changes are come. joining me right now is mark zandi, chief economist for moody's analytics. great to have you, mark. let's start with what's going to happen today. the house is back in session. they are going to be voting to raise the debt ceiling for, well, a short-term fix to this -- to the debt -- to the debt ceiling problem. both parties have raised the debt ceiling. both parties have warned of the disastrous impacts of not doing it. what is the impact really of what is purely a political fight here? >> well, kate, it's all bad. there's nothing good that comes out of the debt limit debate. you know, just -- even though time and time again lawmakers come together and they pass an increase in the debt limit before we -- before the treasury actually defaults on anything, you know, it creates havoc. it creates havoc in financial markets, stock markets. interest rates rise. it costs us as taxpayers, and it's to no end. the original intent of the debt limit was to try to force lawmakers to fiscal discipline, that they would have to think about the tax and spending legislation that they were working on, but, of course, that hasn't happened, so it's -- it's a bad law, a counterproductive law to no end so, you know, ideally if i were king for the day i'd repeal the thing because, you know, it makes no sense whatsoever, but there's got to be a work-around. these guys have got to change -- this is no way to run a railroad. >> for sure. then, as we heard from the speaker making it pretty clear that changes are coming to the massive spending bill. it's not going to be $3.5 trillion. that seems to be clear from what we hear from speaker pelosi here. if there's fewer dollars to spend, there are choices to be made. her -- the way she talked about it was it's still going to be a couple trillion dollars. what do you think in the hypothetical world of we have no idea what that -- what's actually going to still be in it and what's cut because she wouldn't go there, what's the impact on the economy and recovery if it's not 3.5 trillion but it's 2? >> you know, kate, i don't think this really matters for the current recovery because most of the spending and tax policy in this legislation really doesn't take effect until late 2022 and really not until mid-decade. you know, it would help the economy a bit towards the end of next year and i think the economy could use it but it's really about long-term economic growing, doing things like infrastructure that help labor productivity or help to bring people back into the workforce like child care, health care, elder care and it's about long-term economic growth and making sure that the benefits of the stronger economy that will help american households. i don't think that this will make a big difference in terms of our recovery from the pandemic. that's already in train on its way and i think we'll be fine 12, 18 months down the road. >> i do want to ask you about the here and now, the new reporting on just the soaring energy prices. aaa saying the national average for gas has hit a seven-year high, $3.28 a gallon. also, oil prices near a seven-year high as well. you have -- covid clearly remains the biggest threat to the economy, but how big of a threat are the soaring energy prices now on top of that and the ripple effects it can have? >> yeah. no, obviously it's a problem, and it all goes back to the pandemic. i mean, the pandemic has disrupted all markets, you know. you can see in the global supply chains hand in the job market and now we're seeing it in the energy markets, $80 oil. gasoline is $3.25 and rising. natural gas prices run, and actually, kate, these -- these effects are even more serious overseas, so, you know, it's -- the damage created by the pandemic and working through the pandemic. i'm hopeful that, you know, as the pandemic winds down and i think it looks like that's the case, that we'll work through these issues, the supply side of these markets will kick into gear, meet the demand and prices will begin to moderate. you know, it's not going to be next month, next quarter, but i think by this time next year we'll be in a better place. having said that. that's a long time. we've got a cold winter dead ahead, and it's going to be financially painful for people. >> it's good to see you, mark. thanks for being here. >> sure. thanks. >> breaking news just into cnn. we just learned that the trump organization is in advanced talks to sell the lease on its marquee hotel in washington, d.c. f.approved, the deal would be worth hundred of millions of dollars. more now from washington with these breaking details. what are you learning about this? >> reporter: good morning, kate. a source telling me that the trump organization is in advanced talks to sell the lease on that washington, d.c. hotel for $370 million. now the people that they are in talks with are a miami investment firm called cgi merchant group, one of their big investors, a baseball player alex rodriguez but the talks between cgi and the trump organization are advanced according to the talks and cgi is talking to the hilton, hotel operator. they have done business with them in the past as part of those discussions according to the source, that they might remove the hotel -- from the hotel's name the trump organization and replace it with one of the well-known hilton luxury brands. now, "the wall street journal" first reporting that these details on this sale, but a source has confirmed it to us. now, as you said, this deal, if reached, would require approval from the gsa which owns the lease. that is a 60-day process, and a spokesperson for gsa told my colleague that they have not received any notification of a sale so these talks are still under way. now if a deal is reached, it would end a tumultuous chapter for the trump organization. they opened this hotel as donald trump was entering the offer of the presidency and had been plagued about controversy, questions of whether he was violating the constitution by receiving gifts from foreign governments. as we learned last week from the house oversight committee that the hotel has lost $70 million when he was in office and received $3.7 million from foreign governments. kate. >> thanks so much for your reporting. really appreciate it. much more to come on that very clearly. thanks so much for being with us at this hour. i'm kate balduan. "inside politics" with john king begins right now. ♪ hello and well to "inside politics." i'm john king in washington. thanks for sharing your day with us. envelope coach jon gruden resigns after using homophobic and racist and misogynistic language. the reporter who broke the story joins us, and speaker pelosi tells house democrats scale back your bold policy goals and accept a leaner biden agenda. it's a bow to political reality but risks a progressive revolt, and full drama obama. democrats are worried about the virginia governor's race and the former president answers
