risk of covid hospitalization and death by 50%. right now the only other treatments have to be infused or injected, so is this a potential game-changer also for hospitals, this on the heels of a promising vaccination jump. over 2 million americans rolling up their sleeves over the past few days. more than 76% of the eligible population now at least partly vaccinate had had. let's bring in cnn senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen. two big questions on this new antiviral pill. how exactly does work, and how effective is it compared to other treatments? >> pamela, this pill, which is out from merck, is really quite effective. we haven't seen data published in the medical journal, but merck lass put out some data, so let's take a look at what the numbers say. they did a clinical trifle more than 750 people, and they divided them in half, half got a placebo which is a pill that does nothing and half got the antiviral drug. when they followed the folks with the placebo over time 45 ended up in the hospital so to be clear these are folks that had early stage covid-19. 45 ended up in the hospital and eight died. the folks who got the actual drug, who also had early stage covid-19, only 28 ended up in the hospital and none of them died, so those numbers are impressive. however, as i said, they haven't been published and fda and cdc experts really need to look them over. there really is only one other drug specifically for covid-19, in other words, nokes before they get into the hospital. that is monoclonal antibodies. those also work very well, but us a mentioned you also have to get an iv for those and get shots, and it's much more difficult. hospitals have to set up programs, and it's much more difficult and the benefit of the pill is your doctor can just call into a transportation. but to be clear, neither of these treatments are a code of bill or infusion of antibodies. none of them are a vaccine. it's always better to prevent and illness. an ounce of prudential is better than a pound of cure. pamela? >> exactly. even if you are infected with it, you could still have long haul symptoms and so forth even if you could take a pill to help or monoclonal antibodies. >> right. >> in addition to this cases remained steady or dropped in a seven-day average, a good trend that we're seeing. tell us more about it. what should we make of in? >> it is indeed. let's take a look at this map. you'll see very few states in red. red means that covid numbers are going up and covid cases are going up so it's good to see just five states. 19 states are in yellow and those are holding steady, the numbers are about the same and 26 states, 26 states the numbers are going down. this is great, but, pamela, we've kind of sort of been here before which was in late may, early june and then we saw what happened. this virus is very smart, and let's hope we stay where we are and it gets better, but there's no guarantees. pamela. >> let's hope. we know with this virus there is no guarantees, you're so right. elizabeth cohen, thank you so much. joining us now to discuss this and more is dr. william schaffner from vanderbilt unimedical center. great to see you, doctor. let's talk about this ant viral pill? how significant is it? pout it in context about how much it moves the needle in the fight against covid? >> as elisabeth has been saying it opens up very large opportunities. think about it, if you're if diagnosed with cofield now and you're eligible for a monoclonal antibody treatments, you'll have to make an appointment and go to a location and get a series of antibodies or intravenous infusion of the monoclonal antibodies. cumbersome and much more expensive than calling a farm circumstances picking up your pills and taking your pills, still expensive but nonetheless the preventment of the development of serious disease could be spread much more widely to harder-to-reach populations and that's a very excited prospect, but i'm going to say as elizabeth did, it's not -- it's not a substitute for vaccination. primary prevention is best rather than treatment. >> okay. so let's talk about that a little bit more. you have texas gubernatorial candidate lieutenant colonel allen west fighting covid right now in the hospital. he sun vaccinated. he has been posting about his hospitalization to countless followers, and i want to read you something he posted this morning. why not promote protocols such as rejerpon, moncleanly antibody infusion therapy and promote buddhist nebulizer treatments? why not pronounce healthy over-the-county therapies such as zinc which i take, d-3, vitamin c, hydroxychloroquine and, yes, i've mayor-electp. i'm thankful that the medical professions listened to me, not some boiler plate dr. fauci or texas medical board mandates. how dangerous is that messaging? >> well, it is, of course, because it's promoting things that are scientifically invalid, things that have been shown not to be of use. now in there there's some grains of good -- good medicine because obviously vaccination, i didn't hear about that, but the use of monoclonal antibodies clearly will reduce the risk of serious disease in high-risk patients in. and amongst all of that there's some good information, but it's just buried in all kinds of nonsense. >> right. i want to be clear he is unvaccinated, and i tweeted as well, i believe in a sheet the shot was dangerous which is completely a lie so he's unvaccinated. he's saying that well why to the these other treatments and part of the reason that you should be vaccinated rather you rely. it can already clog up the already strained hospitals? i want to ask you about pregnant women, too, because in the uk right now unvaccinated pregnant women make up one-thought of the most critically at risk individuals. 58% of mothers with symptomatic covid delivered early. >> on tet tricks and gynecology needs to be insistent on promoting vaccine during pregnancy. it's very important to protect the mom herself and beyond that we want to protect the baby because there's data that clearly shows that women who are pregnant, who acquire covid, are more likely to deliver a premature baby. that's not in the best interest of that infant, so vaccinating mom protects not only her but her fetus and her newborn, so there's a double bonus there. >> all right. doctor, thank you so much. >> my pleasure. >> and we turn now to thousands of air travelers right now feeling the southwest woes. southwest airlines today cancelling hundreds more flights as it recovers from this weekend's scheduling mess that grounded more than 2,000 flights. flyers stranded waiting in line for hours to try and rebook. cnn aviation correspondent pete muntene joins us now from reagan national airport and tell us what passengers are saying. >> this is not like southwest can flip a switch and get back to normal right away. it's really akin to unplugging the operation and plugging it back in again because it says all of these problems really started to cascade on friday. it really pins the blame here on air traffic control and weather issues, but what's so interesting is that the federal aviation administration issued a rare statement saying that those were not real factors on saturday and sunday when southwest had the lion's share of its cancellations. 800 flights cancelled on saturday. 1,100 flights cancelled on sunday. about 30% of southwest schedule overall. so far we've seen about 360 cancellationed today. one in every ten flights. the point is this is not over just yet and in a memo to southwest airlines employees the airline really describes a ripple effect of passengers and people in wrong positions and in some cases flight crews without hotel rooms this day and the bottom sideline that tens of thousands it of passengers were stranded by this waiting in the huge long lines that you have seen on hold in some cases for hours trying to get through to customer service, and they are not happy about this. >> there's no explanation for this problem, so i suspect that southwest isn't being totally honest with us. >> literally couldn't even sleep last night just because we didn't know what was going to happen. >> looking through and there's nothing, nothing, nothing like for the next few days. >> in a memo to employees, southwest describes that this was compounded by the fact that most of these problems were isolated to florida which is a really central part of its operation. southwest says it is simply trying to get things back to normal right now but one other thing at play here, pamela, is that the airline is lots smaller than it was before the pandemic, about 7,000 fewer employees which is making it harder to get back to normal here. >> right, and it's worth noting that what southwest is complaining about, other airlines presumably had to do with the same thing but they were not impacted in the same dram dick way as we're seeing play out right now with southwest. pete, thanks so much. and with us now is casey murray, president of the southwest airlines pilots association. hi, casey. thanks for joining us. so southwest airlines at first came out blaming this weekend's chaos on air traffic control issues and whether the faa says there were no air traffic control issues. what is your reaction to what is going on here? >> well, i'm really proud of all the employees of southwest, but especially our pilots. our pilots are picking up extra flying amend they are out there on their days off, and it's really internal al processes at southwest as well as i.t., and what we haven't seen is southwest speak to what is going to be the solution moving forward. >> right. you know, do pilots already feel stressed and overworked and now this? give us insight into what's going on with them. >> yeah. well, you know, we're seeing sick rates in line with where they were this summer so that's not an issue. we're seeing pickup rate. our pilots are the most productive in the world. they are the safest in the world and they work harder than anyone else, and they are out there trying to serve of our customers and they are doing everything they can, so picking up on their -- on their off days, all of that time and looking back at the data this weekend, our pilots are out there doing everything they can to -- to do just that, safely and efficiently, service our customers. >> so a transcript of a video message, the company ceo sent to employees. he said we're still not where we want to be with staffing and in particular with our flight crews. we simply need more staffing cushion for the up expected in this environment, and we're bringing new people on board every day. he says that he's working on this. in your view is more hiring the answer? >> actually, we're actually opposed to more hiring. they are going to have to hire some, but for us it is how they are scheduling us, and efficiencies that are failing within the operation and managing the network. if we can get those corrected and hear something from the company about how that's going to be addressed we don't have to see an over hiring situation. it is all about revenue. we want -- we don't want the company cancelling flights. we don't want the company hiring just more people to fill in an inefficient scheduling process. >> so that is -- that is what you think the issue is, the inefficient scheduling process. that is what has kind of come to a head here? >> yeah. it's the scheduling processes. it's also i.t. and the lack of true i.t. support. this has been going on, and we've identified some of these problems four years ago. we've seen this issue, the same issue that happened this weekend has happened for the past two years. we saw it this summer to a much greater degree, but my pilots are there making up time and working on their days off and doing everything they possibly can and until the company corrects how they schedule and reroute pilots' flight attendants then they are going to continue to see the same issue next week and over the holidays and that's what we want to see avoideded. >> there's been some social media chatter suggesting that this is somehow related to the airline's vaccine mandate. what's your reaction to that? >> it's absolutely not true. i'm a little disappoint that had it took southwest until this morning to actually say something about it, but as i said, our sick rates are right in line with where they were this summer, and our pilot pickup rates are as high as they have ever been, so our pilots are out there for our customers all weekend long. >> casey murray, thank you. thanks to all the pilots and flight attendants, that's for sure. lives fly. backbones bend in iowa as former president trump returns to tease another run and launch attacks on american democracy and did it all in front of a raucous crowd including senator chuck grassley, and trump wanted to paint ashli babbitt as a martyr and demanding a new investigation into her death. in. trust safelite. this couple was headed to the farmers market... when they got a chip. they drove to safelite for a same-day repair. and with their insurance, it was no cost to them. >> woman: really? >> you're right. it's not just the insurrection on the 6th, january 6th. it's what trump did between november 3rd and january 6th trying to pressure state officials, now some state legislatures have made such pressure more likely, not less, trying to establish that state legislatures can overturn the votes of the citizens of the state. that's now becoming more respectable in republican circles to advocate, and there's plenty of candidates running for governor and secretary of state, republican candidates in various primaries around the country who rex police italy in favor of state legislatures having that power. it's gotten more dangerous, not less and one point i would add -- a good point that you make is among conservative commentators i would say, respectable places, "the wall street journal", "national review" and "new york times" it's unfashionable to be too alarmed about this. it's kind of uncool to say, you know, what we have a real problem here of possible election subversion and people need to rally against this and pass legislation, call it out, ask leaders to step forward. oh, no, it's only trump being trump and a little bit of republican senators being really quiet and don't get too alarmed. that's now kind of the fashionable position among an awful lot of conservatives who aren't really pro trump but they are certainly alarmed of what's happening and that's also very dangerous. >> and what i say to those people is you were saying that as well when trump was saying all of this about the election in 2020 before it happened. hey, if i lose, it's because it's rigged and you were saying that's trump many trump and then there was an insurrection, right? withheld vital intelligence and didn't act once the violence began. cnn's whitney wild is tracking this for us. whitney, what can you tell us about these really disturbing allegations. >> well, this left is extremely detailed. it's 16 pages. it was first reported by police coast guard, and it makes two major claims here, and it claims that two of the top u.s. capitol police officers failed to act on january 6th as the violence unfolded. the letter also says that former acting chief pitman lied to congress earlier this year. the whistle-blower says in the letter they are, again, a former high-rank officer with 31 years at the capitol police department. this person came forward because assistant -- now assistant chief pitman and acting assistant chief sean gallagher played a role in disciplining officers for actions on january 6th but this person feels that neither one of them was ever held personally accountable for their failures that day. some of the allegations are mere conclusions of other reports but this letter takes particular aim at pitman and gallagher and accuses conduct of investigating their missteps, pom la. >> that seems to be a big deal, that one issue raised this allegation that assistant chief pitman hasn't been honest about how threat intelligence was shared. >> absolutely. so specifically the whistle-blower is taking issue with what she told senate investigators. according to a senate report released earlier this year pitman said the department had intelligence as early as december 21st that showed that people were commenting on a blog about confronting laurnlgs about bring weapons to the rally on january 6th. she said that information was shared with command staff. the whistle-blower says that's not true. here's a quote from the letter. never shared it with the rest of the department, particularly those commanders with real operational experience. if provided this information would have changed the paradigm of that day. pamela, a spokesman denied to politico that pitman lied to congress, but it's a very startling accusation. >> certainly is, whitney. what else did the whistle-blower say? >> well, there's another significant allegation, and we talked about it at the beginning here a few moments ago, but the allegation is that neither one of these leaders took any significant action as a riot broke out. the whistle-blower claims to have been in the command center for some time on january 6th and said there's another quote what i observed was them mostly sitting there blankly looking at the tv screens showing realtime footage of the officers and officials fighting for the congress. a law enforcement source defended these two officials saying instead they were focused on protect lawmakers and reminding us that in the end not one member of congress, not one staff member either, was hurt, and overall, pamela, the capitol police executive team told cnn a lot has changed since january 6. a lot of these problems outlined in the letter have been addressed under the new police chief tang manger but certainly a startling list of accusations that will very likely get more scrutiny. >> whitney wild, thanks so much for that reporting. for more on this let's bring in cnn legal and national security correspondent. do these allegations fill in the gaps of what happened on january 6th? >> these allegations go to one thread of the big picture of december 6th, the thread that deals with the law enforcement response during the events of january 6th, and in particular whether it was a failure of intelligence, do they not just have the information about what was going to happen or was it a failure to act on the intelligence which would imply, you know, more deliberation or kind of intentionality in refusing to get involved. pamela, just to put this in the big picture this, kind of gives us a sense of the big scope of what the committee has to investigate because there's three big buckets here. there's the bucket dealing with the department of justice which, you know, the pressure that was being put there which the judiciary committee has been looking into. there's the bucket about the events leading to january 6th, stop the steal, pressure on the vice president not to certify the vote, and then the events on january 6th itself which involve the pentagon, law enforcement, coordination between the white house and the rioters so this is one thread of that bigger picture but one that the committee needs to investigate fully. >> they have a lot on their plate, for sure. one of the people who died in the attack was rioter ashlie babbitt and former president trump has framed her as a martyr and in a birthday message for her he called on the doj to reopen the investigation into her death. now we want to note that the officer who shot her was previously cleared at the justice department was cleared. the justice department found no wrongdoing. >> pamela, it's important to note that the department of justice looked into this and did not find that overs act inappropriately. babitt was trespassing as they were trying to protect members of congress and he fired a shot believing that it was justified use of force, but what's important here is trump is trying to create a narrative where babitt was acting righteously and this is sort of furthering the idea that the rioters were there for a right youtious and patriotic cause. i think it's important to note that, you know, had he conceded the election, like every other previous, you know, president has after losing, she probably would be alive today, but, you know, it's important for him to turn the tables and make sure that his narrative is paramount in order to continue that sense of fighting
