arms a day. this is the nationwide average but there are exceptions, of course. you can see in five states case rates are climbing by at least 10%. more that you from cnn's paulo sandoval. >> reporter: christine, laura, good morning to you. big picture, covid rates are on the decline across most of the country. 45 states according to johns hopkins university which tracks these numbers saw cases decline or remain relatively steady over the weekend. nationally the u.s. seeing 95,000 new cases throughout the day. it's more than 2 months since it's dipped below that number. that number of infections is still too high and the number of vaccinated americans is still not high enough. he's warning against declaring a premature victory. take a listen. >> we still have around 68 million people who are eligible to be vaccinated that have not yet gotten vaccinated and even those who have been vaccinated, you want to look forward to holiday season, spending time with your family and doing those sorts of things. don't just throw your hands up and say it's all over. >> reporter: pfizer is working on emergency use authorization for children 5 years old and older. >> thank you so much for that. let's dig deeper and bring in dr. chris purnel. so nice to see you. >> good morning. >> nice to see you this morning. nice to have you on for good news for a change. hospitalizations, deaths, new cases all down. we've been here before. we've felt optimistic before. what's your level of comfort in getting together? >> good morning. so this is what i tell family. this is what i tell friends. think about who's going to be gathering. where you're going to be gathering and just how long you're going to be together. let me help everyone understand what that means. if you are all from the same household, all vaccinated or you have a low risk of getting coronavirus, enjoy one another. if it's a couple of households, make sure adults and those who can be are vaccinated. open windows. if you are thinking about mixing multiple households, very large gatherings, i think we still need to put the pause on those types of activities. >> very good advice. scott gottleib says every household should have tests at home. that's part of the multi-layered mitigation. let's listen to him and talk about it on the other side. >> i think every household should have a supply of at home tests on hand. the government can be doing a lot more to subsidize it. distributing them in the medicaid program. i think when you're gathering around the holidays you have to assess the circumstances. you have younger kids unvaccinated with older relatives vaccinated but could be vulnerable for break-through testing. >> doctor, your thoughts on that? >> i agree. look, we can't completely vaccinate ourselves out of this pandemic. vaccinations are important but we have to have that multi-layered strategy. i've been saying since president biden made this recent announcement around the mandates for employers that we should go a step further and deliver rapid tests to every home. dr. gottleib is talking about rapid tests at least in the medicaid population. i say let's be as aggressive in this public health measure as possible. make the tests accessible and cheap and affordable. this way families can say do i have someone who's symptomatic? those tests are great in those instances. >> doctor, many out there hoping pfizer prefers for 5 to 11. i'm waiting for 2-year-olds. unlike other vaccines you think about kids getting from birth, i have a 10-year-old who's sort of with it, they know all the misinformation. they see all the fights on tv over masks. if you're a parent, how do you talk to your child about why they should get their shot? >> just be honest. my youngest, she wrote a letter to the world. can you help me get my letter out expressing how she wishes she could be vaccinated. yes, she has an aunt who believes in vaccinated but she wishes she could be vaccinated. the more we have regular, plain spoken vaccinations. this is a way to show service, empathy, science in action. yes, there will be a moment of discomfort, but the long-term payout is worth that momentary discomfort. >> i get the sense kids are better about this. >> polling numbers of kids who are going to get that shot is not as high. dr. chris pernell, thank you. alan west who is running for gov more is in the hospital with covid-19. he and his wife received monoclonal antibody infusion therapy. he was vaccinated and was transferred to a hospital in plano. his wife who was vaccinated is home. he's taking hydroxychloroquine and invermectin. both of those should not be taken. the last one is an animal dewormer. freedom day in sydney. all of australia has been closed off from the rest of the world during the pandemic. now the strategy in sydney is to live with covid. angus watson is in sydney this morning. what's the partial lifting of the lockdown going to look like in practice? >> reporter: there was joy, relief, yes, some apprehension today as the city exited a 106 day lockdown. people told that they're now allowed to visit family and friends at their homes in small numbers. they're allowed to go out to a restaurant for a meal or to a gym or hairdresser. really for the first time since june since the outbreak of the delta variant started with one case imported internationally. some days later that's over 60,000 cases and 3,000 deaths. that's how virulent it is. as the cases have built, so have the vaccination rates. now there are over 70% of adults fully vaccinated here in the city giving authorities the confidence to open back up again. as you mentioned this, australia has been closed off to the rest of the world. australian states have been closed off to one another. there are places where covid is in the capitol and in melbourne there are also cities and states around the country where there are no covid. the next step on the road outside of covid, bring the sidney whole again. >> thank you so much for that. covid broke the american jobs market and fixing it won't be quick or simple. the latest evidence, hiring slowed in september. a setback as the delta variant raged through the american economy. 194,000 jobs were added back last month. well below the strong hiring last summer. the economy is still down 5 million jobs since the pandemic began. at this pace it would take more than 2 years to recover all of the jobs lost. the issue isn't companies aren't hiring. many report they would hire but they can't find workers. many thought people would rush back into the jobs market but that has not happened. friday's report shows jobless benefits didn't contribute. there are child care issues, health concerns and a re-evaluation of life goals of workers and priorities all playing major roles in keeping people at home. in a census survey 5 million people said they were not working because they were taking care of kids. 3 million are concerned about getting the virus or spreading the virus. covid has completely changed how they think about their family, safety and job. i also think covid has broken the statistics we use to measure the labor market and we need to be patient. >> it shows you the reasons people are making the decisions are not just about wages. >> it's not just about another dollar or two an hour, it's about a much bigger global picture at home. still ahead for you, a warning to china. after more than 100 fighter jets flew into taiwan's air defense zone, now president biden must decide to do if beijing continues to test him. no sugar. no pizza. no foods you love. stressed? arms a day. this is the nationwide average but there are exceptions, of course. you can see in five states case rates are climbing by at least 10%. more that you from cnn's paulo sandoval. >> reporter: christine, laura, good morning to you. big picture, covid rates are on the decline across most of the country. 3 million are concerned about getting the virus or spreading the virus. covid has completely changed how they think about their family, safety and job. i also think covid has broken the statistics we use to measure the labor market and we need to be patient. >> it shows you the reasons people are making the decisions are not just about wages. >> it's not just about another dollar or two an hour, it's about a much bigger global picture at home. still ahead for you, a warning to china. after more than 100 fighter jets flew into taiwan's air defense zone, now president biden must decide to do if beijing continues to test him. no sugar. no pizza. no foods you love. stressed? >> you have a progressive president, president sine wen not acknowledging things like the 1992 consensus. you have a view from the beijing side that the leaders here in taiwan, they have the support of young people. they have certainly after what happened in hong kong, that's what helped president sai win re-election. this would not become another hong kong. they're overwhelmingly against being absorbed by the mainland. china senses this. they have viewed taiwan as an eventuality. president xi is emboldened. he has a powerful military. this might be the crowning jewel on his terms. >> nice to see you this morning, will. thanks. this to be a real decision point. >> this is a foreign policy challenge for this white house. no question. coming up, thousands of southwest flights canceled leaving passengers helpless and crews stranded. >> there were no other flights available at all. i just began to cry. i was just devastated. >> an update on the delays this weekend. that's up next. salonpas. it's good medicine. centrum multigummies aren't just great tasting... they're power-packed vitamins... that help unleash your energy. loaded with b vitamins... .and other key essential nutrients... ...it's a tasty way to conquer your day tr now with a new look.es. bipolar depression. it made me feel like i was trapped in a fog. this is art inspired by real stories of people living with bipolar depression. i just couldn't find my way out of it. the lows of bipolar depression can take you to a dark place... ...and be hard to manage. latuda could make a real difference in your symptoms. latuda was proven to significantly reduce bipolar depression symptoms and in clinical studies, had no substantial impact on weight. this is where i want to be. latuda is not for everyone. call your doctor about unusual mood changes, behaviors, or suicidal thoughts. antidepressants can increase these in children, teens, and young adults. elderly dementia patients on latuda have an increased risk of death or stroke. call your doctor about fever, stiff muscles, and confusion, as these may be life threatening... ...or uncontrollable muscle movements, as these may be permanent. these are not all the serious side effects. now i'm back where i belong. ask your doctor about latuda and pay as little as $0 for your first prescription. this is the new world of work. each day looks different than the last. but whatever work becomes... the servicenow platform will make it just, flow. whether it's finding ways to help you serve your customers, orchestrating a safe return to the office... wait. an office? >> reporter: what's so interesting here is southwest pilots union said there were no official or unofficial job actions over the weekend, which really debunks all of these rumors flying around online that pilots may have walked off the job. all of these problems started to snowball this weekend. 800 cancellations on saturday. 1100 on sunday. so far we've seen 320 cancellations for today. this is really not over just yet. we know southwest pinned all of this on issues on friday, air traffic control and weather issues. the faa issued a statement saying those were not problems on saturday or sunday. this caused a ripple effect according to southwest in that they told employees that this put planes and people out of position. in fact, some other flight crews were left without hotel rooms. the bottom line is thousands, if not tens of thousands of passengers were stranded in long lines across the country. you know what else is so interesting here, this ripple effect was compounded by the pandemic. the airline has been trying to pack as many people as possible on fewer planes and that makes it harder for the airline to recover when it's in situations like this. people are left out and that makes it hard to return things to normal. >> unplug it and plug it back in is always my first approach. pete muntean, thank you so much. powerful storms swept through texas overnight. a possible tornado in tulsa left damage. we'll get a better idea of the scope in the region when the sun comes up. for now we have meteorologist tyler malden to tell us what happened overnight. hi there. >> hi, christine. nearly a dozen tornadoes with the storm system. in terms of the wind, we have hurricane warnings here. if you live from illinois into michigan, have a heads up. you are under a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather today. then we hit repeat on tuesday with the severe weather in the central plains. already a level 3 out of 5 threat here specifically for kansas and oklahoma. plenty of room in the storm prediction center in the next 24 to 36 hours. large hail, damaging wind, tornadoes in that part of the country. reason being, there's a developing storm maker out west. this is actually the first big snow maker out west where we could see up to 12 inches of snowfall in the mountain west. 2 feet of snowfall clashing with warmer air. >> tyler, thank you so much for that. he's back. maybe he never left. donald trump on stage in iowa saying the quiet part out loud. >> mitch mcconnell didn't have the courage to challenge the election. >> the former president's grievance with the senate minority leader. that's next. you're an owner with access to financial advice, tools and a personalized plan that helps you build a future for those you love. vanguard. become an owner. ♪ and i'm gonna keep on lovin' you, ♪ ♪ 'cause it's the only thing i wanna do. ♪ turns out everyone does sound better in the shower. and it turns out the general is a quality insurance company that's been saving people money for nearly 60 years. ♪ 'cause it's the only thing i wanna do ♪ shaq: (singing in background) can't unhear that. for a great low rate, and nearly 60 years of quality coverage - make the right call and go with the general. with mucinex nightshift you've got powerful relief from your worst nighttime cold and flu symptoms. so grab nightshift to fight your symptoms, get your zzz's... and get back to your rhythm. feel the power. beat the symptoms fast. what happens when we welcome change? just finished voting in the elections. the polls closed and the elections are due in the next few hours. early polls are showing lackluster turnout. cnn's sam kiley is following all of the latest developments for us. sam, why the low turnout? >> reporter: low turnout is something of an irony if you like. on first look the 2019 near revolutionary levels of protests spread right across the country, precipitated a change of government and then a promise by the new prime minister academy to introduce the early elections precisely from the pressure coming from the ground to end the close influence of iran on baghdad and demands for economic rule and corruption. 3200 candidates designed to bring more independent potential members of parliament into the 329 seat legislature isn't going to do that. what we are seeing and what many people on the streets in iraq are seeing, which is why the turnout was only 41%, is that there is more of the same. more of the same block voting along the sectarian lines with very heavy shia dominance. the one kind of wild card in there is mutada elsadir. he met against the american invasion and american-led occupation. now he is steering away very heavily from iran and trying to forge very much more of a nationalist agenda. other shia blocks are very close to eye han. you have the suni and kurds voting along sectarian lines. many of them paid for the demands with their lives. some 600 of them demanding an end to the sectarian, the backward looking form of politics that has so been problematic in iraq over the decades. no sign that's going bottom of the 13th, christian vasquez is gone. you know it's a good night when you can barely find home plate because your best mates are there waiting for you to celebrate. red sox win 6-4 in the 13th inning over the rays. boston can wrap up the series tonight. one of four playoff games tonight. on our sister channel tbs. not even an hour long weather delay could keep the buffalo bills from getting revenge. josh allen out of this world throwing three touchdown passes, 12 yards per attempt. how about nearly 60 yards and the score running the ball. 6'5" leaping and levitating over the with an ankle injury. daniel jones lowering his head going helmet to helmet with a defender near the goal line. he was wobbling while getting off the field. jones will need to clear the concussion
