had come true. let's go "out front." good evening, i am erin burnett. out front tonight a new lie. it is a lie being pushed on republicans by republicans that jeopardizing the whole nation. the lie is that the vaccine is not working. the lie is working right now. according to a new poll, 49% of republican men say they won't get the vaccines. the number of trump supporters overall who say the same, 47%. >> who can turn this around? >> the people who are committed to president trump and his leadership still matters a great deal. it is important for former president trump and as well as the vice president to encourage all followers to get the vaccine. >> trump is not doing this and not doing this any way shape or form despite the fact he went and get vaccinated himself in secret. he's happy to have the protection for himself but he's not carrying enough about his supporters or the american population at large to tell others to follow suit. his supporters are following what he says that's why they are not getting vaccinated themselves. >> did you get the vaccine or are you planning to get vaccinated? >> no, i had covid. i think that provides me the best immunity possible. i have not had the disease. >> not true. >> first of all, i personally like many of you know multiple people gotten covid more than once. this is not antidotal, this is science. you should be vaccinated regardless if you already have covid-19. experts do not know how long you are protected from getting sick again after recovering from covid-19. then there is this excuse from sitting congressman hawthorne. "i won't be taking it, the survival rate is too high." >> many of his constituents and supporters are older and vulnerable but may follow his lead anyway. he's an elected member of congress. third of all and this is crucial. the unvaccinated are the vehicles for the virus to mutate which can put us all at risk at a deadly resistance version. here is dr. jorge rodriguez. >> when you are ill, you are going to cause mutations and you may cause that mutation which is going to be stronger than all the other viruses and making this epidemic worse. just because you are going to be okay does not mean the rest of us going to be okay because of you. >> the fact that trump and his supporters still refused to tell america to get the vaccine is just crazy. it will save lives. it is literally crazy because trump takes credit for the vaccine development itself. he views it to his development as an epic and major achievement. >> if i were not president and if sleepy joe are president, you would never have the vaccine. >> we were told it would be impossible to deliver a vaccine by the end of the year. all of the experts said absolutely unthinkable. trump is exaggerating and it can't happen and we did it. >> he's exaggerating on one crucial thing here, it would not take four years. trump and his team do deserve the credit to get this massive effort going. just ask top biden's health official. who do they credit? >> after all this is an effort the republicans should know began before we got here. we are carrying it out. this is a non-partisan effort. >> does he deserve credit? >> yes, he does. >> biden's team is not afraid to ask for trump's help on vaccination. >> if former president trump woke up tomorrow and wanted to be more vocal of the safety and efficacy of the campaign, the vaccine, certain we would support it. >> if he came out to say go get vaccinated, it is important for the health of the country, it seems inevitable that the vast majority of the people who are his close followers would listen to him. >> absolutely inevitable. evidence he refuses. every gop officials got false excuses for vaccinations. more than 1,300 people. 1,300 americans a day everyone right now are dying of the virus. phil mattingly is out front at the white house. what is the white house is doing to combat this. these numbers of vaccine hesitancy, the number adds up to a really big problem. >> it is something white house officials are cognizant on. without question, officials made it clear that they are starting their outreach recognizing that this would become a significant issue and what they are doing behind the scenes is a couple of things, keep in mind, they're going to unload about a multi hundred million dollars public service announcements to try to get people vaccinated. they understand that's not the message that's going to reach out to republicans and trump supporters. they want to reach out to their local officials, they particularly want to reach out to their doctors. they found an internal polling at the white house that the individual doctors regardless of political persuasion plays a huge role whether or not they want to get the vaccine. making sure local officials understand and try to get the words out is the best way. they are reaching out to main conservative state holders and anthony fauci they'll be holding a meeting with evangelical leaders, trying to pick up areas where there is common grudound d leaders they can get across. >> thank you very much. i want to go to matthew dowd and dr. jonathan rhiner. let's take the numbers at face value. 47% of voters say they will not get vaccinated. what happens if that happens, these 47% and 49% people don't get vaccinated? >> that's a huge number. so if 30 to 35 million people decide they're not going to get vaccinated, makes herd immunity is even that much harder. if you look at some very deeply red states, look at places like alabama and mississippi and wyoming, now imagine the prospect of herd immunity in those communities if almost half of the republicans in those states skip the vaccine. so we can have huge pockets of active virus in this country for a long period of time until we get everyone vaccinated. which is why it is so important for our leaders to reach out to people. reach out to people who are young, reach out to the conservative community and communities of color. >> you have those pockets where it circulates and circulates. that's what dr. rodriguez is worried about. that's how the virus can mutate and be deadly. if everyone can imagine that for one moment, i would hope you think twice of getting vaccinated. are trump and republican leaders are at fault here? >> absolutely. i was thinking today about like if you were charles darwin, you would not have to go to the island, you can do a case study of natural selection and survival of the fittest and their shaurvival. i feel for a lot of them because they have been lied to. they have been lied to about climate change and they have been lied to about a number of things and they believe some of these leaders. it is the leaders' responsibility. my guess is there is a number of gop leaders and congress who are saying they are not going to get the vaccine but quietly but never talk about it. one, they're not telling their constituents to get the vaccine. to me this is evolution at its finest where you are going to see, it is like they put a gun to their own head and threaten somebody and say, if you don't do what i want you to do, shoot. it makes no sense. >> how dangerous is it? >> there is always a grain of truth of every truly effective lie, right? >> congress cawthorn, he says he does not need the vaccine because he's young. >> their odds of dying from this is incredibly low. he can give it to others and it can mutate. >> we all know multiple people who gotten sick from covid a second time. we just don't know that time is. they're playing on the tiny dpran of something that becomes so powerful. >> the biggest reason, the most important reason for an elected leader on a national level to get vaccinated is to show leadership by getting vaccinated and show constituents how important it is. i had a young man wearing a mask and he looked a little concerned and he was not. i asked him if he had gotten vaccinated and he said he had not because he was a lynn lynn -- little concerned. i told him i have gotten. it ripples down to their community. a report in "axios" suggested 25% of house members had not been vaccinated. >> i want to know who these people are. everybody who had not been vaccinated need to explain why. i will challenge them for d dereliction of duties. >> they're all eligible and no one is jumping in front of the line to get it. we are hearing from senator johnson and congressman cawthorn gave their reasonings. they are not leading. we don't have people who actually lead, we have people that allowed our cons wents to stay and ignorant. you can't believe that stuff you read on the website. there is people been told if they get the vaccine, it is going to change their dna. that's dpgoing to help at the course of the vaccine. we should be confronting it and demanding republican leaders get the vaccine and tell people. they got vaccine and why. the likelihood of that happening is low. >> what i think we should do is go to a local leader. i belong to a church here at this small town in texas. half of the touch i belong to are republicans and trump supporters. more than 70% of the theme have been vaccinated and they gotten vaccinated because the minister and the local leader of the push have pushed on a weekly basis and why it is important to over come it. we should do our confrontation on this evolutionary example of people that don't seemed to have caught up to where we are as a modern world. we should ask our legal leaders to take off. they cab overcome leadership on a partisan basis. >> it is a powerful example. thank you. the governor of texas, saying his state needs more laws to prevent voter fraud. his attorney general spent 22,000 hours looking for fraud, he found 16 examples of it. influx of migrants at the border shows no sign of slowing down. one democratic congressman says biden needs to act fast. >> he just spoke to officers for more than four hours. we'll tell you what she says about cuomo's obsession. om! enjoy the go with charmin. hi. so you're the scientist here. does my aveeno® daily moisturizer really make my dry skin healthier in one day? >> it is going to get out of control quickly. you are not going to see him ripping children out of mother's arms but he does need a process to ask for asylum and if you qualify to get in the country in a safety and healthy manner. my community lost over 3,000 constituents in my district and we are still in the pandemic. i am losing people every single day. it is clearly concerning and we need to think out of the box in terms of better policy ideas and messaging better and more orderly way to do this. a safe zone where we can guarantee there is security to do this. >> that's significant. the white house is pressed on the problem which they refused to call a crisis although by any numbers it would hit that standard compared to what it was called before. they often blame the trump administration for the border. let me play it for you. >> we inherited a real mess. >> the prior administration dismantled our immigration system in its entirety. what we are seeing at the border is the immediate of the dismantlement of the system. >> we are in the circumstances that we are in because not only their approach was inhumane but it was in effective. >> they'rre are others pointing clear perception of the trump administration which you are not welcome. the perception that some may have had, the biden administration, we are going to get rid of everything trump did and we are going to open the board per. what's the truth here?
