The president is absolutely committed to reopening schools. He wants them not just to reopen but stay open. He wants to do that in a safe w way. When it comes to the debate that schools need to be open as soon as possible with mitigation efforts in place, of course, there seems to be no daylight between the Biden White House and teachers unions, who are pushing back, demanding that they all get vaccinated first. Some teachers unions demanding all the students also get vaccinated first. This week the cdc director dr. Rochelle walensky said this. Vaccination of teachers is not a prerequisite for reopening school. Vaccination of teachers not a prereq to safely reopening schools. Dr. Walensky spoke to this in her personal capacity. Obviously shes the head of the cdc. Were going to wait for the final guidance to come out so we can use that as a guide for schools around the country. Reporter Chief Medical Correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta joins me now. Obviously, schools need to be safe before they reopen. Masking, ventilation, smaller class sizes, people with preexisting conditions who are vulnerable need to still be able to stay at home. All of that is important. In is the white house claiming that the cdc director was speaking in her personal cap capacity, undermining her own Top Health Official seemingly for seemingly saying that vaccinations are not necessary to reopen schools safely . Which is what the community has been saying for months and months now. Its insplikable. Whats going on . Jake, science has to lead the way here. But i think its a little bit more of a murky issue. Let me explain it this way. Ive been speaking to lots of people about it. Jonathan reiner wrote a wonderful oped on cnn. Com. There is data to show there are situations where schools can reopen safely without teachers being vaccinated. These are the studies that the cdc is pointing to. Theres one out of wisconsin, as you know, showing that the School Virus Transmission was a lot lower than the surrounding community, close to 40 lower. Out of around 5300 students and staff, 191 people became infected over the semester and only 7 of those were actually related to inschool transmission. What do we learn from that in North Carolina and other studies . That it can be done. Problem is Many School Districts dont have some of those resources. They dont have the space. They dont have adequate ventilation. Some of them dont even have enough masks and hand hygiene that can be confident is going to be available for everybody. So, you know, what im hearing over and over again is that theres teachers who are just frightened of that. You say it can be done safely but our district cannot do it safely because we dont have the basic things. So thats why the vaccinations become increasingly important. That becomes a safeguard for these teachers and these staff. You know, the situation were in now, as you just heard from lucy, is that most states will be offering vaccines to teachers and i think that process will ramp up. That may obviate this issue in the beginning of this pandemic. We didnt know what was going on. I think everyone was trying to play it safe. We have data now on what needs to be done but some School Districts just cant do it, and thats why the vaccines end up being this important backstop for them. Cdc guidelines, which were expecting next week, should be an important part of that in terms of what the schools can do. If teachers are saying i dont care what the scientists say, i need to feel safe and im only going to feel safe if every teacher is vaccinated and every student is vaccinated. Why would we defer to somebodys feelings over the science . Yeah. I mean, i dont have a good answer to that. I mean, im a scientist. Science should lead the way. Jake, throughout this pandemic, i dont think we can dismiss peoples feelings of concern here. It is a very low likelihood, obviously, of somebody getting sick. If you have a staff member who says i teach in a poorly ventilated classroom. Its cold outside. I cannot open the windows. I have preexisting conditions. How do you start to parse this out for people . This may be subjective, admittedly, but what kind of environment would it be if the teachers who are teaching feel unsafe . I think it will be different district to district and thats what the cdc will have to take into account in their recommendations. We heard what dr. Walensky said. She doesnt think vaccinations are a prerequisite. What are the prerequisites . If School Districts cant meet those prerequisites in terms of ventilation, space, masking, then what . Can they only open with vaccines . I think these are the questions that hopefully well get answers on over the next week. Its amazing we made it to february and there hasnt been guidance yet, the way that we need it and our kids need it. The Biden Administration is hoping to resurrect a proposal from the Trump Administration that never took off, to mail face masks to every american. What do you think of this . Is that the best use of time and resources right now . Cant people who want face masks get them already . Yeah. This is fascinating, ive got to tell you. This is the package of face masks that were supposed to go out last year via the postal service. You may remember that, jake. They didnt go out via the postal service. Some were administered through faithbased groups and things like that. I agree with you, jake. These masks, these are cloth masks. Theyre much more widely available than they used to be. That doesnt seem to be the problem. The problem seems to be that theres a significant percentage of people who still just wont wear them, not because of availability, just for other reasons. They dont believe in them. Theyre making a political statement, whatever the reason may be. I dont know that its the best use. I think spending a lot of time reminding people of the value of masks obviously weve been trying to do that for the last year now roughly. But its im not sure that it will make a big difference. Start with two things on the outset. Larry summers, former obama top economic official. He said its a bold plan and hes more concerned about undershooting than overshooting but 1. 9 trillion is what hes concerned about given the current economic elements in the United States right now, basically what the output of the economy is versus what it could potentially be and says what the Biden Administration is putting into place would overshoot where they need to be by a significant amount. That could lead to overheating the economy and potential increase in inflation. The broader point Larry Summers is trying to make is if inflation goes up, youll have to raise taxes and austerity comes into play and broader goals wont be possible in congress. Why this frustrates the white house when i talk to white house advisers, as one put it simply, this is not stimulus. Larry is looking at it as if its stimulus. They view this as a broader perspective, as trying to essentially float the American Population until the virus gets under control. Not to stimulate the economy, float the economy and, as such, put in place unemployment insurance, direct payments, increases to the Child Tax Credit or earned Income Tax Credit that allow the American People to basically hang on until vaccinations are more widespread. Im not afraid to criticize any president , regardless of party, have disagreements. You know, at some point you say enough is is enough. We looked at my colleague in ms. Greene. She didnt apologize. Ive been to a lot of schools. I watched you, a couple of years ago, moderate the debate between rubio and deutsch. I met with the parkland kids as i served on the Education Committee in the 90s and we had the Columbine Kids come and testify before us. Not a dry eye was there. To think it was a staged event, that it would be used for gun control ive got Family Members that were in vegas for that shooting a few years ago over labor day weekend. This was not staged. She was unapologetic. She was unremorseful. And it was pretty evident in her Press Conference that she held this morning. She wouldnt even apologize or even address the issue that she had called for nancy pelosi to be assassinated, to be executed. So, let me ask you, congressman, what does it say about the state of the Republican Party that only 11 republicans voted to remove Marjorie Taylor greene from her committees because of her insanities and her bigotry but 61, 61 republicans voted to remove congresswoman liz cheney from her Leadership Position because she voted the way you did to impeach President Trump for inciting the riot . What does it say about your party . I would say a couple of things. First of all, as it related to yesterday, i would have preferred that these Steering Committee on the republican side actually did that on her own and have that affirm by our whole conference. Not a lot of folks approve of the statements she made. As it related to the vote we had on liz cheney in our closed republican conference, she prevailed better than 21. I thought that was a pretty good signal to folks that you can vote your conscience and not be taken to task for it. Liz cheney, youve had her on your show lots of times. She is a smart, dynamic, wellspoken woman, leader, and that was clearly evident when we went through our republican conference. And she had a vote that was pretty overwhelming. Frankly, we wanted that vote to show how strong she was. You seem to be suggesting its an apples to oranges debate, that some of the people that didnt vote to remove Marjorie Taylor greene from her committees maybe did so because theyre not comfortable with the Majority Party doing it on the floor of the house as opposed to the leadership of the Republican Party doing it privately. Where is the leadership of your party . Where is Kevin Mccarthy . It seems like an obvious thing to do. This person has called for nancy pelosi to be assassinated. She said all sorts of antisemitic things, antimuslim things, saying School Shootings are bogus. I would strip her from the committees because i find that abhorrent. Why wouldnt Kevin Mccarthy do that . He appealed to steny hoyer and said stensteny, well remov her, take her off the Education Committee if we can forestall this vote. We will do it at our own pretty much what john boehner did with paul ryan in the past when we had folks say some things that werent really in the mainstream. Steny rejected it. They wanted the full vote in the house. Of course, thats what we had. From my perspective, i would have preferred we did this in house rather than having a full vote on the house floor. Its never happened like this before. And so it broke precedent. I hope that it doesnt continue to see that happen. Republicans ought to decide which republicans serve and democrats the same. For that reason, i think a lot of my colleagues likely voted no on the resolution because, in fact, it was precedent and perhaps would have preferred, like i would have, that we actually would have dealt with it inhouse, as Kevin Mccarthy offered to do 24 hours before. I think i wasnt in the conversation but i think that mccarthy offered to take her off one committee but not both of her committees and i think he wanted to put her on a Different Committee and thats why hoyer rejected it, but i wasnt part of the conversation. Maybe there are two different versions. You have shown integrity throughout this process, not a surprise, but you have shown integrity throughout this process. Twothirds of the House Republicans, forget Marjorie Taylor greenes insane Conspiracy Theories, twothirds of the House Republicans have endorsed the big lie Conspiracy Theory about the election. You have not. Im not holding you responsible for what other people have done. Mccarthy, scalise and 140 others have spread the big lie, voted to disenfranchise voters and there are people who look at the party and say does this party now stand for Conspiracy Theories and lies . Ben sasse of nebraska is facing censure from his state gop for criticizing President Trumps role in the capitol riot. I want to play a little clip from a individeo he posted last night. You are welcome to censure me again but lets be clear why this is happening. Its because i still believe, as you used to, that politics isnt about the weird worship of one dude. The party could purge trump skeptics, but i would like to convince you that not only is that civic cancer for the nation, its just terrible for our party. We should point out that voters just reelected sass for another six years in the senate and had been pretty quiet about trump for the previous year, year and a half or so. He was reelected with a 40point margin. Whats your take on ben sasse . Im happy to hear him say that but what do you think . Well, like you said, jake, hes taking a stronger stance after being elected and hes safe for about six years. That being said, he is trying to, along with a small handful of republicans, point out that theres a decision that the gop has to make right now. They have to decide whether or not theyre going to stay with trump and go along with Conspiracy Theories that have deep roots in antisemitism, racism or whether theyre going to make a break with that and decide theyre going to be honest with their voters and say that trump lost the election and try to win over other voters rather than just their base they have right now. The risk of Fighting Trump or trumpism, you write, is too much to spaek out. Clearly there are some willing to, ben sasse, shes not an elected, but cindy mccain. Doug ducey. What is the sasse Ducey Calculation . They are the minority in the party. You look back at history, theres no question that republicans are put ting less i extremist groups today than they did if you compare the way that republicans responded to Joe Mccarthys lies in the 50s, there was more resistance to that than there were trumps lies after the election. In earlier cases it wasnt like it was a profile in courage but at least there was a Critical Mass in resistance. Now youre seeing the vast majority of republicans have decided that the trump side of the party is too big to excommunicate, and the cycle theyre in, the treadmill theyre on is as they identify more with that extremism, theyre losing ground in white collar suburbs around the country, which makes them more dependent on massive turnout. So its very hard to see right now how the party restores the center of gravity. Only three republican centers in states that did not vote twice for trump, only nine House Republicans in districts that did not vote for trump. And the party has retreated to trump country. Yeah and unfortunately in this case its not about trade deals. Its about Conspiracy Theories and lies. When asked whether republican leader should have settled matters with green, reed said i guess i would respond that im a big john boehner fan, referring to the former speaker, who dealt with his members in an upfront manner to avoid problematic votes and i miss john boehner every day. I understand why reed says that. Every other republican leader, including Newt Gingrich might have handled this differently. Dont you think . I remember boehner putting his members in line, especially when they seemed to be going out and embracing crazy Conspiracy Theories. He was quick to do that. Mccarthy, on the other hand, clearly has a different leadership strategy, made a decision to embrace truch when he went down to maralago after appearing to back away from him a tiny bit during the impeachment trial in the house. Then he went full force back into his arms and decided to not take matters into his own hans with marginally taylor green. Maybe only take her off one committee, try to get her put on another one.
