Times-News Debbie Smith is decades removed from the years she had to worry about bailing herself and her loved ones out of jail, but she still wrestles with the memories. A native of Missouri, Smith lived a somewhat nomadic life before settling down in Burlington. She married her first husband at a young age. One of her first experiences with the particulars of paying bail was due to legal trouble her husband was in before they had met. As a newlywed, she found herself having to pay bail associated with a robbery. "I didn't know this at the time I married him," Smith said. "When he got arrested for that I had to make arrangements to get his bond made."
