John Davidson has had a career that’s unrivaled in hockey, perhaps in all of professional sports. He was an NHL goaltender for 10 seasons, became a Hall of Fame broadcaster during a 23-year run in New York, and is now nearing his second decade as a high-ranking executive. The last few days, though, have been something different. In addition to being the Columbus Blue Jackets’ president of hockey operations, Davidson is now the club’s interim general manager after Jarmo Kekäläinen was fired last week after 11 years on the job. With the NHL trade deadline (March 8) less than three weeks away, there’s no time to get settled. Davidson has been joined on the current California road trip by assistant general manager Josh Flynn and director of player personnel Basil McRae. “Everybody’s reaching out these days, eh?” Davidson said. “They’re saying hello. We’re going through the process of evaluating every other team in the NHL, where they’re at, what they might be interested in doing, what they’re thinking.“We’re going through that process. You start getting into conversations, and it’s good. Everybody’s starting to get active. It’s not that far away.”
