that a man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of the prevention and lawful and decent burial. fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of position. they have since been released on police bail with conditions whilst our investigations continue. i recognise that this is a distressing time for all of those affected, and i have no doubt it will have a significant impact across all our local communities and beyond. however, this is an incredibly lengthy investigation and a highly intricate one at that with many extensive lines of inquiry. i have a dedicated team of over 120 humberside police officers and police staff, together with partners from across the region and nationally. this reflects the sheer size and scale of this investigation and our shared commitment to establishing the truth and, where appropriate, seeking justice for those who are affected. the dedicated phone line remains open. and thus far, we have received over 1000 phone calls from members of the public since friday. i would encourage anyone who has concerns about the service, the service that they have received from legacy independent funeral directors that have not yet contacted us to please contact us on the dedicated hotline. that was a briefing by humberside police. the bbc*s nick garnett is in hull — he sent us the latest updates. this is where the police operation is being spearheaded from, and it is a large police investigation. the police have described it as a truly horrific incident, extremely complicated, with heartbroken families at the core of it. in a nutshell, last weekend, police were called after a tip off to the headquarters of a local funeral home called legacy funeral directors in the centre of hull. when they got there and they searched the buildings, they found the remains of 35 bodies that had been stored there. there are also human ashes that have been found there that are away for investigation at the moment. now, the police have removed all the bodies and have taken them to mortuary where they are being studied and checked for identification to try and find out who the people are. but it's believed at the moment that 35 people have been the bodies of 35 35 people have been... the bodies of 35 people have been stored there. but we don't know for how long. now, the police say that there are 120 officers involved in this, forensic science officers and specialist search teams who have been searching not only the building where the bodies were found, but other premises in the humberside area, where the police think that might have links with the investigation. now, the police had opened up a hotline for people who might be concerned. that phone line since the weekend has received over 1000 calls, and that's from people who had any dealings with legacy and are now worried about their relatives and what may have happened. the police say that two people were arrested at the weekend. those people have now been released on police bail with conditions attached while the investigations continue. they were questioned and it's quite complicated terms for what they were being questioned on. they were questioned on suspicion of the prevention and lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of position. now, as i say, there are two people have been released on police bail. now, as i say, those two people have been released on police bail. they have not been charged. and they they will continue to be part of the the criminal investigation. now, the police say that at the middle of all of this are heartbroken families who want to know what is happening. and the police said that their thoughts are with every single member of the public in this area that may have been affected. children in england will no longer be prescribed puberty blockers at gender identity clinics. that's been confirmed by the national health service. it follows a public consulation which ran during the latter half of last year. puberty suppressing hormones , or puberty blockers , are currently prescribed through the nhs for children and young people with a diagnosis of persistent gender dysphoria. with more on this we can speak to our health editor, hugh pym. tell us more. this is a controversial issue of course. last year at nhs england said it intended to introduce this policy of ending routine prescriptions of puberty blockers to children. and they'd only be used for clinical research. in the policy was put out to consultation and nhs england and us just today and announced that as a result of the consultation they decided to go ahead with this policy as from now. no new children coming forward will be prescribed these drugs. although a small number, around 100 are currently on them will continue. at the same time as all this there has been a review of these services. the review by hillary kass, the interim report published back in 2022 had said that there needed to be a transformation of the services and what was being offered by the tavistock trust in london is not sustainable. and there needed to be a change. the current gender identity and development service in england will come to an end at the end of this month. that had been announced, until new clinics in london and liverpool will be established. it's what we expected from the announcement last year. there's ones like change, the initial policy document head of the consultation had said that in exceptional circumstances these drugs could be prescribed to children. that phrase is not there anymore. but i am that doctors under normal procedures and protocols in the nhs have the right to make a request forfunding for the nhs have the right to make a request for funding for drugs for patients for those involved if they feel it is appropriate. we're awaiting reaction for this but it's been welcomed by the department of health, covering health in england and nhs england have said that they feel this is the right way forward. thank you for that update. pet owners may be overpaying for medicine or prescriptions for their animals, according to the competition and markets authority. the average one—off trip to a vet currently costs almost four hundred pounds. the bbc has learned some households are sacrificing holidays, heating and even food to ringfence that money. jim connolly has been hearing from some pet owners about the pressures they're facing. ziggy, say hello. people will do anything for their pets. when they get sick that love can mean big bills. extortionately expensive, for anything. this is ziggy. he's a rescue dog, and he's very vocal. huge, huge expense. it depends which vets you choose. and you've got to shop around. who owns vets, and the effects on prices, is one of the main things the competition and markets authority, or cma, have been looking at. independent vet practices accounted for 89% of the industry in 2013. now it's thought way more than half are owned by six big companies. and, go! shambhu rules the roost around here. sit. good girl. she's my baby. she's my little girl. we don't have children, so that's our child. dominic and vinita took shambhu to a practice owned by one of the big corporates for an operation to prevent her getting arthritis. it's very scary as well. you know, an operation, you know, they're putting a pin in the bone. the treatment cost more than £5,000. and dominic wanted to know why. i looked at the bill and there were lots of items that we didn't, not familiar with, they're medical terms. but one jumped out at me, which was paracetamol, and it was £20 for a pack of paracetamol. i pay 60 pence in the supermarket. i was shocked that we were being charged that much for such a simple item, and it makes you wonder how much they're overcharging on other items as well. and are you being exploited? that's what it felt like. the competition and markets authority is concerned pet owners are not being given basic information such as price lists online or the upfront cost of treatment before agreeing to it. it also noted that pet insurers fear customers are sometimes steered towards more expensive treatment. it's really difficult for pet owners to get clear, upfront information about the price of different treatment options, about the cost of prescriptions. we are concerned many people may be overpaying for medicines that they buy from their vets. second, we're really worried about how competition is actually working in this market. we approached the six corporate chains for comment. ivc evidensia told us they ensure that their pricing is appropriate, fair and competitive. another, pets at home, told us it disputes how it is referred to by the cma, adding they are locally owned vet practices. we've seen a lot of prices increase. i think historically vets have rather undervalued their time, and so we're trying to catch up with a situation which hasn't been supporting veterinary businesses well. all the vets i've spoken to say that because human treatment is free on the nhs, we've lost perspective on how much medical care costs. but that's little comfort for the two thirds of us who own a pet when it comes to paying the bills. jim connolly, bbc news. i'v e i've been speaking to a dog and cat owner, linda fisher she told me how vet bills have been affecting her. i think we've been with the same vet practice for 32 years. it was taken up practice for 32 years. it was taken up by practice for 32 years. it was taken up by one of these large corporations about 2016, i think. it is very noticeable how much the veterinary fees continue to rise on an ongoing basis. i would like to say, i think the staff the vets, the nurses, i think they work extremely hard. and i think they are dedicated to the animals they treat. i don't actually think that they are the problem. i don't think they are probably being reckoned by the huge profits making if you look into these accounts. yes profits making if you look into these accounts.— profits making if you look into these accounts. yes and i think that's what _ these accounts. yes and i think that's what this _ these guardian newspaper that she should be shot. that won, among others that have been so condemned through the course of the day. this particular unit is off the mat and was set up following the murder community. so what significance does the month of ramadan hold and why are muslims encouraged to fast? to answer these questions and more, i'm joined by mehreen baig — the host of a bbc sounds podcast, not even water, that offers a free guide to ramadan. welcome to the program. let's take this back to basics. i think most people do know what ramadan is but what is it and why is it so we don't eat during the month and that is all people really know. ramadan is actually one of the five pillars of islam. it is something that is compulsory for muslims to do. we abstain from eating and drinking for 30 days from the hours between sunrise and sunset. it's also a time to really focus on your faith and abstain from all bad habits. it's notjust about starving yourself with up you're supposed to stay away from any bad deeds, not swear, not gossip itjust be the best version of yourself with that i think life can be really busy and it's really wonderful to have a month where you cut out all the extras and you just focus on reflecting. the name of your podcast, not even water. i suppose thatis podcast, not even water. i suppose that is part of the explanation. yes. we decided to call it not even water because i think for a long of muslims is the most commonly asked question for the people say "can you have even water?". no, you can have water for the a have even water?". no, you can have waterfor the a big part have even water?". no, you can have water for the a big part of this podcast and why it started and it's on bbc sounds is because i feel like in the current drawn to the river severn ion the south—west of england to experience what's been called "the greatest ride on earth". phil mackie was there. this is a bucket list experience if you are a hardcore surfer. dodging each other and avoiding a mouthful of muddy water is a small price to pay for the experience of a lifetime... ..even if you're not up for very long before you get wiped out. the severn bore is one of a handful of similar phenomena that occur around the world. when there is a high spring tide it forms a wave which funnels up the river in gloucestershire. i'm 67 injune, i reckon i'm the oldest boy in it. richard sanderson is an old hand. it's because you're surfing the wrong wave up a river inland, isn't it? you're going the wrong way. it's all of the senses, isn't it? and this is the one to do, it's great. i must go, because i'm going to miss that one. howard and nick had brought their paddle boards all the way up from devon. it's the experience, it's the anticipation, it's... i don't know, waking up at the crack of dawn. it's like a stupid adventure and quite surreal as well. here we are first thing in the morning, stand around in the water waiting for some wave to appear out of nowhere. there's nothing else like it. not everyone has been able to catch the waves that they wanted to but this is one of the great sights that you can see in this country and the first daytime five star bore on the severn for a long time. because the river is winding, and the road next door is straight, you can ride it in one place, get out, drive upriver, and get in again. as the wave made its way upriver, it was difficult negotiating the hazards. these two were from canada and sweden. thousands had lined the river to watch it. it was just as wet out of the water as in, and nick and howard finally caught the wave. it got up really quite steep and i thought, "this is going to be great," and then itjust picked up high and threw me straight off. it was the third time we've done it, and it's the biggest i've seen it. five star, then? i'd say so, yeah. now it's going to be board back on the roof and back in the car. good luck. see you. cheers, guys. and off they went for a third go. phil mackie, bbc news, gloucestershire. great start. just time to repeat the breaking line on our main story before i go. a different line that frank hester the major tory donor has been reported to the parliamentary liaison and investigation teams by diane abbott following his alleged comments reported by the guardian newspaper that he she should be shot. saying the unit of the mat was set up during the murder ofjo cox the labour mp back in 2016. it alleged crimes against mps in the capacity of elected representatives and would be gazes with the parliamentary security department. frank hester reported to the parliamentary liaison investigations team. we will have more on that and the rest of today's headlines. that is it from me. thank you for watching. bye—bye. hello there, good evening. it's been another really quite wet day for many of us, particularly across england and wales. in fact, parts of south—east england have already seen their average march rainfall. we're not yet halfway through the month. a lot of saturated ground out there. and although the air is milder as we head through the rest of the week, there will be further spells of rain at times, especially in the north and the west. and if we just take a look at the rainfall accumulation chart for the rest of the week, most spots are in for another 20 to 30 millimetres, but parts of north—west england and north—west wales could see as much as 70 to 80 millimetres of rainfall, so it willjust add to the risk of localised flooding, and there are already plenty of flood warnings in place. that's also partly due to the spring tides yesterday and today. this was the situation earlier on, then, so this low pressure out towards the north—west of scotland just pushing these weather fronts further eastwards. but the rain has now cleared across parts of east anglia and kent. there will be another set of weather fronts just pushing down from north—west scotland, through into north—west england and western wales, so turning really quite wet here. but ahead of the front, some very mild—feeling conditions, a lot of mist and murk, but temperatures here may not drop out of double figures. it will be a mild start to the day across the board. and then on wednesday, our weather front is stalled across wales and into north—west england. to the north of the front, some sunshine, but some showers move in across north—west scotland later. gales across the north of scotland, with the low pressure centred here. further towards the south and the east, ahead of the front, there will be a lot of cloud. but given any brighter spells, temperatures could rise here in the milder—feeling air to 15, 16 degrees. now, as we head through wednesday night and into thursday, our weather fronts start to retreat further northwards again, bringing some further spells of possibly quite heavy rain across northern ireland, northern england and into southern scotland. again, some brighter skies towards the north of scotland, but a lot of cloud as well. a rash of heavy, thundery showers across wales, south—west england, gradually pushing further eastwards, but plenty of dry weather again for east anglia, parts of kent and sussex. given some brighter skies, we could see 16 or 17 degrees in all of that milder—feeling air. but the colder air still across parts of northern ireland and scotland, and that's gradually going to sink a little further southwards as we head through friday. so we'll come into some slightly cooler—feeling conditions as we head into the start of the weekend, staying unsettled, more rain at times. at 6:00pm, police say they've now removed 35 bodies from a funeral home in hull, as investigations continue. this man thought his mother had been cremated at the end of january. instead her body was still at the funeral directors', identified by a hospital tag. the mp diane abbott calls racist remarks allegedly made by a tory donor "frightening" after it's claimed he said she should be shot. the foreign secretary calls for answers from israel after a bbc report shows medical staff in gaza being beaten and humiliated. these are very disturbing pictures and reports that have come out from this hospital and we need to get the bottom of what exactly happened. are owners being charged far too much for their pets' care? an investigation has been launched. and riding rare waves in the severn estuary today. and coming up on bbc news, a big night for arsenal in the champions league. can they beat porto to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years?
