a fair hearing over his allegation of an on—field racial slur by south africa's bongi mbonambi. curry claims he was verbally abused during last saturday's world cup semi—final defeat to the springboks. the world governing body had reviewed video and audio footage, plus submissions from both teams, and cleared mbonambi, ruling that there was "insufficient evidence" he had used the alleged term. england head coach steve borthwick says that the situation has given his side lots of motivation heading to friday's match. the players i've got tonnes of motivation. they are playing for england in a game, competing for the third place at the world cup —— have got. and there is tonnes of motivation. the situation, and let's be clear here, i know people keep talking about the situation regarding tom. tom curry has done nothing wrong. somebody has said something to tom curry. tom has reported it, then there has been a situation, world rugby made the decision not to allow the opportunity for the victim's voice to be heard, that is where the victim's —— that is where the disappointment comes from. in the women's game, england have maintained their unbeaten start to theirwxvi campaign with a dominant 45—12 win over canada in dunedin. lark atkin—davies scored four of england's seven tries as the red roses cruised to a bonus—point victory, and it means they will be the inaugural champions of the top tier if they beat hosts new zealand next weekend. later, scotland playjapan, and south africa host samoa in the second tier. to football, where liverpool had the *perfect night', according to boss jurgen klopp. he put out a rotated side that made it three wins from three in the europa league, with a 5—1 win over french side toulouse at anfield. first—half goals from diogojota, wataru endo and darwin nunez put liverpool in a comfortable position at the break, and second—half efforts from ryan gravenburch and mo salah rounded a ruthless win for klopp*s side. everything that we expected. toulouse is a good team. toulouse is playing football. and we gave them, we put a proper shift income and thatis we put a proper shift income and that is what i wanted. and then we had the goals we scored, they were wonderful. the right player scored the goals, all of them really good. so, yes, nothing to complain, really. you can find the rest of thursday's night europa and europa conference league results on the bbc sport website. now to tennis, and wimbledon looks like it could be getting bigger. organisers have cleared a significant hurdle in their attempt to expand their site at the all england club. merton council has granted planning permission for 39 new courts, including a new 8,000—seater show court, on the site of the former golf club opposite. it would allow the qualifying competition to take place at wimbledon itself, but the new courts are unlikely to be in operation before 2030 at the earliest, if the plan gets full approval. to the nba now, where it was a debut to rememberfor damian lillard, top—scoring with 39 points, as his milwaukee bucks beat the philadelphia 76ers 118—117 in their season opener. lillard helped hold off a 76ers fightback in the fourth quarter, closing out the win with the final 11 points of the game. the former portland trail blazers star also set a new record with the most points for a bucks player on debut, a record which had stood since 1984. icame in i came in on what was expected of me in these type of situations. i came and i have been in enough of those situations where i know it is probably not always going to be made making the shot or taking the shot. but you know, they are encouraging me to be the person to take control and make decisions. and you know, this was a was going to happen in those moments and that is what i am here to do. in the nfl, the buffalo bills held off the tampa bay buccaneers to win 2a—18 on thursday. the bills were led by quarterback josh allen, who threw two touchdowns and rushed in another, as the bills got back to winning ways and moved to 5 and 3 for the season. the buccaneers, meanwhile, have now lost three consecutive games. and the buildup continues for the fight between wbc heavyweight champion tyson fury and mma star francis ngannou in saudi arabia on saturday. fury*s title will not be on the line against the cameroonian—french fighter, who is contesting his first—ever boxing match. fury was having some fun with ngannou in the pre—fight press conference on friday, trying to tickle him in the face—off. but he will have to be wary of ngannou's power. the 37—year—old holds the current record for the hardest punch in the world, set in 2017 when he was a ufc fighter. and that's all the sport for now. you can get all the latest over on the bbc sport website, goodbye. hello, you're watching bbc news. let's bring you the latest on a developing story in the united states. hundreds of armed police officers are still searching for a gunman in the us state of maine, after a series of mass shootings left 18 people dead in the city of lewiston. last night, officers searched a house belonging to the suspect, army reservist robert card, who is considered armed and dangerous. residents have been told to stay in our homes, lock their doors, businesses are shut down today, schools students are being kept out of schools. so this community is really frozen in fear as authorities continue to search for this suspect, robert card. they have expanded their search now. you mentioned they searched a homeless night where they believed he might be. he wasn't found there, so they have now expanded the search really across the state of maine going into massachusetts and all the way up to the border with canada. we no federal law enforcement agencies are joining in, atf agents, us marshals are all participant —— participating in the search. they are looking at wooded areas, they are even searching waterways, trying to find any place where this individual may have gone. they believe you had access to multiple vehicles. 50 what more is known _ access to multiple vehicles. so what more is known about _ access to multiple vehicles. so what more is known about robert - access to multiple vehicles. so what more is known about robert card? i more is known about robert card? because difficult questions are being raised, aren't they, about his past issues with his mental health and also his access to quite serious weapons? and also his access to quite serious wea ons? ~ . ., ., weapons? right. we are learning more about his history. _ weapons? right. we are learning more about his history. he _ weapons? right. we are learning more about his history. he is _ weapons? right. we are learning more about his history. he is a _ weapons? right. we are learning more about his history. he is a person - about his history. he is a person who had a documented series of mental health issues. we understand from a law enforcement bulletin that cbs news reviewed that he was referred to treatment over the summer. he was institutionalised after an episode where some of his military commanders in the army reserve were concerned about deteriorating signs of his mental health and he himself reported issues more recently that he had heard voices, was experiencing delusions. as to your question about the legal question here. of course laws here in the united states about guns are different from state to state. maine has some of the more lenient gun laws across the country. there is no red flag more here for instance that would allow authorities to step in and take weapons from somebody who is deemed a threat, celia. you are dimensioned that after the shooting, that would be a conversation again, but this is a place that has valued gun rights and has a deep connection to hunting and has a deep connection to hunting and to sport shooting. so those are all issues that are at play here. that was cbs news brad blackburn speaking to me from lewiston earlier. eight million people could be waiting for routine, non—urgent nhs treatment in england by next summer, regardless of whether doctors continue striking over pay — that's according to new analysis by the health foundation. the charity says that currently, 7.75 million people are waiting for appointments and operations in england. our health editor hugh pym reports. protect the nhs. we are the nhs. strikes in the nhs have dominated health news for much of this year, although junior doctors and consultants are now in talks over resolving their pay dispute. the prime minister has blamed the strike action by the doctors union the bma for keeping waiting lists higher than expected. very nice to see you. but a health think tank says the action explains only a small amount of the increase. and it says the overall waiting list will keep rising till next summer, close to a possible date for the next election, raising doubts about mr sunak*s pledge to cut the number. the health foundation says even without more strikes, the total will get to around 8 million in august 202a. and with some further action by doctors, it could get to 8.1 million. in a worst—case scenario, the total could reach 8.4 million in august next year. we recognise the health foundation's figures and, if anything, we think these numbers could go even higher than the 8 million people the health foundation are suggesting. since about april of this year, lists have been increasing at about 80,000 people per month. and we're coming into winter now, where pressure on emergency departments will make collective performance even harder. the health foundation does say that if hospitals get through more operations and significantly increase the number of patients treated and there are no more strikes, then it's possible the waiting list will start falling sooner. but health employers say there are deep—rooted problems, which predate the pandemic. nhs england said the think tank had underestimated the impact of strikes. the department of health said action to tackle the longest waits had been taken. hugh pym, bbc news. now it's time for a look at the weather with carol. hello. british summertime comes to an end, and we are seeing things very autumnal, unsettled and changeable over the next few days. some heavy downpours of rain for many of us, and blustery winds at times too. we have low pressure systems rotating around this area, this area of low pressure could be a troublemaker saturday into sunday in a cell. let's look at the rainfall for the next few days and it is eastern scotland seen the heaviest of the rain, perhaps 100 millimetres by the end of saturday, following on saturated ground, so the potential for further flooding saturated ground, so the potential forfurtherflooding problems. today, that rain sitting across eastern scotland, quite windy in the north east. elsewhere, some sunshine particularly further south west, but also a scattering of showers moving through on that south—westerly breeze. temperatures ten to 16, cool across the far north of scotland in the clear air. this evening and tonight, we keep cloud and outbreaks of rain for north east england and eastern scotland. further south, clear spells, some mist and fog patches for central areas, but heavy thundery showers across parts of southern england through these irish sea coast, wales, northern ireland. it is not going to be cold and frosty, but it could be quite a murky start your saturday morning. mist and fog clear array from central parts of the uk and we have more cloud and rain for southern and eastern scotland, north east england. a few showers elsewhere, but more persistent heavy rain moves in from the south late in the day. some thunderstorms and the potential some of this heavy rain could cause some of this heavy rain could cause some localised flooding across parts of southern england saturday night. so don't forget the clocks go back by one hour through the early hours of sunday morning. so 2am becomes 1am again. through sunday, this area of low pressure drifts northwards, but we have got the tail end of this front which will again just sit across eastern scotland where we really could do without even more rainfall accumulating. so we could see further flooding problems rainfall accumulating. so we could see furtherflooding problems here on sunday. further south, some sunshine. but again, it around on sunday. further south, some sunshine. but again, itaround parts of southern night england to wales where we could see the bulk of heavy thundery downpours, blustery winds around as well. some sunshine for the likes of eastern kebabs and temperatures in the mid—teens. it is notjust temperatures in the mid—teens. it is not just unsettled temperatures in the mid—teens. it is notjust unsettled until the end of october, but the start of november, too. plenty more showers in the forecast. goodbye for now. this is bbc news, live from jerusalem. the head of the un agency for palestinian refugees says the last remaining services it's providing in gaza are collapsing. the military says it carried out another incursion against hamas positions inside gaza last night. we will have the very latest from the border. and i'm lucy hockings. also on the programme... do you love her? new life amid the suffering — we hear what life is like for pregnant women inside gaza. hundreds of police officers are carrying out a huge manhunt in maine for the suspect of murdering 18 people and injuring 13 others in a mass shooting.
