council was unable to get a resolution passed. in fact the united states vetoed a resolution that was put forward by brazil and negotiated amongst members which not only called for humanitarian pauses, but it did condemn hamas's attacked and it called for all parties to respect international law. so far, the council has been silent on this. the secretary—general, what we are hearing there is condemnation of both sides but also really putting this conflict into the wider issue, which has really not come through so often, matthew, the idea that this is not, this attack by hamas did not come in a vacuum, that it was part of the palestinian people having been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation, that they have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements, they have been plagued by violence of their economy stifled, the people displaced, their homes demolished, their hopes for political solution vanishing i think no surprise to anybody who knows that the united states is one of israel's staunchest allies on the council, we saw secretary of state blinken really repeating a very pro—israel message. stating that he had not heard outright condemnations for hamas's web" of underground tunnels. 85—year—old yoheved lifschitz says she was taken from her home in southern israel, beaten up and transported by motorbike into gaza. her daughter translated her story just hours after her release, at the hospital in tel aviv where she's being treated. my mom is saying that she was taken on the back of a motorbike with her legs on one side and her hands on another side, that she was taken through the ploughed fields with a man in front on one side and a man behind her and that while she was being taken, she was hit by sticks by shabab people. until they reached the tunnels. there, they walked for a few kilometres on the wet ground. there is a huge network of tunnels underneath. it looks like a spider web. our diplomatic correspondent paul adams is injerusalem. paul, so many fascinating details in that press conference a little earlier in the day, and one of them, of course, just the contrast between her description of what it was like when she was taken and doctors would come by every couple of days to check up on the hostages, fearful apparently that the hostages might fall sick, and she also at the end of her account, did say that the hostages felt that they had been let down by the israeli military, forfailing, in her view, to heed warning signs that hamas were doing something. so it was an account which i think caused a bit of disquiet in israel. there were some on israeli media saying, was she not properly prepared to talk about this? there was even a statement put out, quoting israeli government officials, pushing back and just emphasising the fact that hamas is in their view a terrorist organisation who had abused and mistreated hostages, so it was an interesting insight into precisely how she was treated in the gaza strip, very latest from the middle east. because we have been hearing what is actually happening on the ground. the number of palestinians killed in the past day is more than 700, according to hamas, is the highest 24—hour palestinian death toll of the war. our correspondent rushdi abu alouf is inside gaza. he gave us this stark assessment of the situation. i think this is the largest number of death within 24 hours i have ever seen covering this conflict for the last 25 years. also today, the israeli military has dropped leaflets in northern gaza, seeking information about the hostages being held by hamas. the leaflets are in arabic and they say that the military will provide protection and a financial reward for anyone coming forward. they also guarantee complete confidentiality. and while that's happening, there's been very limited aid getting into gaza. un agencies say they are on their knees asking for more. they also say a third of hospitals in the gaza strip are no longer functioning because of a desperate need for supplies. i spoke to the unrwa spokesperson tamara al—rifai. the secretary—general set the bar, i think, for where we all stand as humanitarians, with a very, very urgent call for a humanitarian ceasefire and for the application of international humanitarian law. that is particularly relevant to my colleagues at unrwa. the fact that unrwa, the largest un agency in gaza, has already lost 35 staff members, women and men, doctors, engineers, nurses, you name it, it is devastating, it is shocking and it is appalling. so, we stand behind the un secretary—general�*s call for respect for all civilians, those who have nothing to do with this conflict, including aid workers, including my own colleagues at unrwa. now, your agency spoke to the bbc only a couple of hours ago, issued a warning today about how much longer you can keep going. what are you saying? be very clear about what that warning is. the warning is if we do not get more fuel into gaza, we as unrwa, the largest aid agency in gaza, will not be able to carry out any humanitarian operations. and that is because we need the fuels for our trucks. that whole conversation about convoys coming in from rafah. we need fuel so that our trucks can pick up that aid. we need fuel for our water desalination plants, so that people can have access to clean water. hospitals need fuel for life—saving machines, without which, people can die. so, fuel is a top urgency. my colleagues in gaza have confirmed that we have enough fuel for about two to three days. after that, we will not be able to work, neither will the bakeries that need fuel for electricity, neither will the water desalination plants or the life—saving machines in hospitals. just be very clear, because one of your colleagues said you had enough fuel to last till tomorrow night. is that what you are saying? and also, just tell me the consequences if you get no more fuel, the consequences if you have to halt operations. if we get no fuel, we cannot work and people can die. people can die because there will no longer be electricity in hospitals for life—saving machines. people will no longer have access to bread. that is almost the only thing people are eating now and that is because unrwa and the world food programme have been distributing wheat flour to bakeries. in those bakeries, in order to make bread, we need electricity and water for the wheat. the water, we get it through our water desalination plant that works through a generator that is powered with the fuel, so if we don't get the fuel, there is no water, there is no bakery, and there is no machines in hospitals, and there will be no trucks to pick up the humanitarian supplies from the borders. that, the un agency working on the ground there in gaza, with their warning about what happens if they don't get more fuel. it's been one week since the explosion at the al—ahli hospital in gaza. it made headlines around the world. hamas blamed israel for last tuesday's blast, but israel denied this, saying it was caused by a misfiring rocket from within gaza. it was reported that hundreds of people died, but the true numbers are not clear. amidst the ongoing fighting, bereaved families are struggling to come to terms with what happened. one gaza resident lost five members of his family — including two of his sons. the grieving father called for peace and an end to the ongoing war. heba bitar reports. for umazen, photos are all that is left of her two sons. mazin, i7, and ahmed, 13, went with their uncle and two cousins to al—ahli hospital on the day of the blast because they thought it was a safe place to be. they were all killed. translation: out of fear. and terror from the rockets, they saw people seeking refuge in el madani. they believed that because of the british flag and the presence of the red cross, an international organisation, it wouldn't be targeted, making it a safer choice than homes and streets. after eight long years of waiting and difficult ivf treatment, abbasi and his wife had their first son, mazen. four years later, they had ahmed. translation: this is where ahmad used to sleep. - and this one was for mazen. this is ahmed's photo when he was around three years old. this was ahmed's bag. may god have mercy on him. he wanted to become a lawyer. the news about losing five members of his family left abu assi in a state of shock. he wasn't even able to bury his sons. translation: i had no tears, no tears, i swear to god. - my legs were shaking, but no tears. after an hour or two, i started crying and my leg and arm were numb. the bereaved couple are now left with their three—year—old son, faraj, and all they ask for is peace. translation: they are kids and have nothing to do with this. - i just want this to stop for those who are still here, so the kids can live, for the son i still have and for my mother. i don't want anything else. i swear, i only want peace for everyone — not only for gaza, for the entire world. heba bitar with that report. i want to spend the next few minutes talking about that extraordinary briefing given to international journalists yesterday, where the israeli military played more than 40 minutes of previously—unseen video of the hamas atrocities on october the 7th. it's worth warning people watching that the descriptions you might hear in the interview coming up are likely to be both graphic and upsetting, so you might want to step away. but it was an unusual tactic from the idf — and one that it's important to look at in detail. one of the journalists at that briefing was david patrirakarkas, foreign correspondent for the news website unherd. you imagine most of the footage comes from the perpetrators themselves, from these gopros they had strapped to their bodies, dash cameras of the cars. these have obviously come from hamas fighters that have been captured or killed. and what you're seeing is hamas fighters running through roads, running into the streets, shooting civilian cars. you're seeing them drag bloodied corpses, male, female, younger people out of cars, throwing them into the streets, sort of weeping and cheering, shouting and screaming as they throw them into the street. you're seeing sort of terrified male and female hostages, handcuffed, dragged out of trucks and then then thrown into cars. presumably, they're being spirited away to gaza. there are one or two very distressing things. you see one scene which comes clearly from the security camera inside a kibbutz, and a father was with his two boys — and they must be 12, i3, and they were in their underpants, they had clearly been woken up. they run through into a cubbyholes and hamas fighters emerge from a truck. they throw a hand grenade into the cubbyhole. the father falls down dead. they drag the two children into another room. and the one boy screaming, "daddy's dead, daddy's dead. "this is not a prank, this is not a prank. "i just want to die." so it's quite distressing. and people in the audience were visibly distressed. yes. i've seen pictures only this morning, actually, of the journalists, with so many of them holding their heads in their hands. and you wrote in the piece that you published, "even with the litany of horror i've witnessed in my career," and we've spoken before on this programme when you were in ukraine, "this was horrifyingly unsettling." it really was. and i actually came straight here from ukraine. it's the nature of it. in ukraine, it is largely soldier and soldier. obviously, civilians are being bombed from the air, but, you know, seeing what i saw, seeing hamas fighters break into an office, seeing a cowering civilian under a table and then just being blown away, seeing people raving in a field and then, a minute later, seeing those same people lying dead — you know, this rave where people are dancing and smiling and laughing, this is the celebration of life alongside the fetishisation of death, in two single images side by side. it is incredibly distressing because it's very personal and something else. we need to understand it. all of this footage comes from the perpetrators. this was notjust a terror event. it was a media event alongside it. you say in your article, even the way that it was filmed was — you use this phrase — the gamification of terror. absolutely. i mean, you're seeing dash cams in which the view you see is of a rifle like this. it's like call of duty. it's like video games. and i also say one of the biggest gasps of revulsion, actually, and i have yet to unpack fully what this means is when a hamas fighter comes across a dog, the dog sort of trots eagerly towards him and he just blows it away. that got another audible gasp of revulsion. this is very, very personal, very intense, extreme, sustained violence of the very worst kind on our screens. you talked at the beginning about the idf, and perhaps we can talk about the reasons for that briefing yesterday, because in part, i've seen some of the things they said, in part, it was to to show the world what they're fighting, in terms of what hamas was capable of, but it's also very much to address the deniers that are out there. you go onto social media and you can see it, just tweet after tweet. yeah, this is, ithink, very dispiriting generally about our age, i think. you know, in a public sphere that is dominated by algorithmically curated platforms, the scope and reach of disinformation, misinformation, straight out lying, is huge. and they were forced to do this because the level of denial was so great. and there was a lot particularly about a lot of denial around the issue of the murdered babies. now, i'm not going to get into details, but we were shown an image of one of them and it was horrific. and so, yes, this is where we are now. they are forced to come out and put these images on screen for internationaljournalists. and i need to point something out — i did a tweet thread about this that spread quite far — there's still lots of people saying it's all lies. you know, there's only so much you can do. there are certain people you are never going to reach. and i think it is deleterious to the public sphere generally. just one of the journalists at that briefing. before we break, let me tell you, there is a way northwards through parts of the midlands, in towards the north of england. we do have a met office yellow warning for heavy rain through parts of the east midlands, in towards yorkshire and the humber. whilst in itself that wet weather not particularly heavy, it's falling on already saturated ground, so the potential for some further issues with flooding as a result. south of that band,
