To cover gazas essential needs and that it is negotiating for a second aid convoy of 20 30 trucks to be allowed into gaza on sunday. Speaking at a Special Summit In Cairo to discuss the israel gaza war, the un secretary general, antonio guterres, said much more needed to be done for the people of gaza than the aid that was currently supplied. Those trucks need to move as quickly as possible, in a massive, sustained and safe way from egypt into gaza. A 20 truck convoy of the egyptian red crescent is moving today, and i want to express my deep gratitude to egypt for the essential role egypt is playing in this regard. But the people of gaza need a commitment for much, much more. A Continuous Delivery of aid to gaza at the scale that is needed. And we are working nonstop with all parties that are relevant to make it happen. The british Prime Minister, rishi sunak, has called for all Water Supplies to be restored to gaza wherever it is physically possible. And here in the us, President Biden says his Administration Remains committed to ensuring that civilians in gaza will continue to have access to food, water and medical care without diversion by hamas. Our correspondent wyre davies has the latest from tel aviv, and a warning his report contains images you may find distressing. Two weeks into this war, signs of limited progress as aid began to enter gaza through the border with egypt. Some 20 trucks in total not nearly enough according to aid agencies, bringing in basic supplies, food, water and medicine. Many victims of the bombing are children, and the humanitarian crisis is worsening. Tahir and her six children are some of the many sheltering in crowded public buildings. Translation there is not even 1 of a good, healthy and safe i life for a child. There is no safety. If we dont die from war, we will die from epidemics and diseases. At an Emergency Summit on the crisis in cairo, the Foreign Secretary criticised hamas s murderous actions and reminded israel of its obligations. I have spoken to the Israeli Government about the importance of preserving civilian lives in gaza. There is a reason why many israelis support what their government is now planning a huge invasion of gaza to crush hamas. Two weeks ago, almog was a peace loving 20 something having the time of her life at a Music Festival in the israeli desert an innocence she will never recover. As squads of hamas gunmen stormed the festival, shooting indiscriminately, almog fled for her life, finding cover under some desert scrub where she would hide motionless for eight hours. I didnt realise they were going to take hostages. Every time i heard or see their interaction, they shoot, and they were shooting for killing. Today is the first time almog has ventured out, the nerves in her late damaged by the ordeal. For someone who believed in coexistence, she is now a frightened sceptic about the possibility of peace between israelis and palestinians. Our correspondent Rushdi Abualouf is in the Southern Gazan City of khan yunis, where most of the supplies have been warehoused while they are checked by United Nations aid officials. Earlier he was at the Rafah Crossing and he told us what he saw at the border. Yeah, we just left Rafah Crossing back in khan younis, the place where most of the like, all of the trucks that brought today are now in warehouse for the un. A drop in the ocean, everybody here is describing this aid, but its hope that opens for 2. 3 million people. A window of hope opened today after transferring those 20 trucks carrying essential medical kit, including a portable Operation Room that should be placed somewhere here in this hospital soon. The meeting in the un is to make sure of two things. One thing is to make the priority for this very small amount of aid. Second is to make sure that hamas is not involved in distributing or taking any of these. We understand from very early in the morning from a senior hamas source that hamas has agreed to some form of not intervening in this. They say the crossing is open from our side and we are not going to intervene. The un will handle the distribution of what they have today a very small amount of medicine and food and probably some medical equipment, but very big hope after that, that egypt might want a sustainable humanitarian corridor to feed those people who need in this area, especially the people in the southern part of gaza city. We are talking about two thirds of the population in this area. We understand that more than 4,500 trucks are on the other side of the border in egypt, waiting for that meeting to finish and for the mechanism to to be clear. 0nce everybody is happy with the outcome of that meeting and the outcome of the first shipment, i think tomorrow or after tomorrow, its a matter of time, we can see more and more goods and food are delivered. But for now, we are certain to say that nothing has been distributed. All of the 20 trucks that were loaded back to back on the no man s land between egypt and gaza is now in warehouse for day one. We have to say that today was relatively less fighting, less air strikes and less hamas rockets into israel. There is no official ceasefire. We tried to ask hamas about it. They said we are not aware of any ceasefire. But we noticed after covering two weeks of this war that today is different. Today, less fighting, today, less fire. And an update on the situation on the ground leaflets tonight have been dropped over gaza city with a warning anyone who does not move south may end up being seen as what is described as an accomplice to a terrorist organisation. The Israeli Military has said it is preparing to step up its strikes on gaza to put further pressure on hamas militants there. Army spokesman rear admiral Daniel Hagari says the move is also intended to minimise the danger to Israeli Forces when they enter the next phase of the war. Translation we will deepen our strikes. Well minimise the risk to our forces in the next stage of the war and we are going to increase the attacks from today. Well increase the attacks, and therefore i call on gaza City Residents specifically to continue moving south for their safety. The father of the freed american hostage who was seized at gunpoint by hamas told the bbc that his daughter is doing well after being held for nearly two weeks in gaza. Mother and daughterjudith and Natalie Raanan are now the first hostages to be freed since hamass deadly attack on southern israel earlier this month. Originally from illinois, they were in israel visiting family. Hamas says they were released for humanitarian reasons. The ranaan family said the womens release was a moment of extraordinary relief, but they said they remain focused on the efforts to secure the return of eight other Family Members that remain captive in gaza. 0ur North America correspondent nomia iqbal is in chicago, where she has been talking to family and neighbours of the released hostages. This Close Knit Community here in a suburb of chicago where judith and natalie are from it hasjust been judith and natalie are from it has just been terrific watching the last two weeks unfold and you know that people they love and care for are involved in that. It has been indescribable for them. Involved in that. It has been indescribable forthem. Im involved in that. It has been indescribable for them. Im in the area where the familys local rabbi lives, and he has been leading prayers and services for them, and its just absolute relief that they are ok. I spoke to, as you mentioned there, yuri ranaan, natalies father, he said he had a two minute conversation with his daughter, they didnt go into details about her life in captivity. He said is that she is going well. She is a tough girl, it will take her some time to get over what has happened, but she will do it. And he also told me that he had spoken to President Biden after he learnt that his ex wife and daughter were being released, and he thanked mr biden for his effort to secure their release. The us in the uk are working with the qatari government to try and get its citizens back. But mr biden also spoke to natalie and judith as well, saying that he was looking forward to them returning to the us. We dont know exactly when that will be, but yuri ranaan said he hopes it is next week, because that is when Natalie Turns 18. figs week, because that is when Natalie Turns 18. Week, because that is when Natalie Turns 18. As you say, small glimmer Natalie Turns 18. As you say, small glimmer of Natalie Turns 18. As you say, small Glimmer Of Hope Natalie Turns 18. As you say, | small Glimmer Of Hope there, but coming at a time when so many others are still being held, and ijust wonder how the community where you are is dealing with that, cognisant of the situation and the fact that this isnt over. Its the situation and the fact that this isnt over. This isnt over. Its really hard for this isnt over. Its really hard for them this isnt over. Its really hard for them to this isnt over. Its really hard for them to fully i hard for them to fully celebrate the fact thatjudith and natalie are back, because, as you say, there are still dozens and dozens of hostages and other people who are still unaccounted for, and that includes extended members of natalie and judith s family. They were in israel, they were in the kibbutz in southern israel celebrating natalies graduation and also her grandmothers 85th birthday. The grandmother survived the attack by hamas, but there are still members who are unaccounted for, and the community here say that they are of course relieved to know thatjudith and natalie are good and well, and they will come home soon, but they are very much focused also on hopefully trying to get back the other members of the family who are still unaccounted for. A short while ago i spoke to patrick hamilton, head of the delegation to the us and canada for the International Committee of the red cross, about the humanitarian situation in gaza and the release of two american hostages. Welcome to you, patrick. Thanks so much forjoining us. Now, we know that the International Committee of the red cross was involved in the release and the handover of two us hostages who are being held in gaza when that took place yesterday. Can you tell us any more about the red crosss role here and how this all came about . So thanks very much this all came about . So thanks very much for this all came about . So thanks very much for having this all came about . So thanks very much for having me this all came about . So thanks very much for having me on. This all came about . So thanks i very much for having me on your programme, and indeed, we were able to carry out the release of those two hostages yesterday, which clearly is a positive sliver of hope and what has otherwise been a really devastating couple of weeks for all concerned, and clearly there remain a large number of israeli families that are still extremely concerned about the remaining hostages that are still held, captured, and for whom there is still at this stage no news, no access, no information as to exactly when they will be released. The International Committee of the red cross has this role to work as a neutral, impartial, independent humanitarian neutral intermediary in conflict, and so we have been working since the last two weeks, non stop, at all sorts of levels, engaging with hamas, the israeli authorities and anyone else who could have, indeed, an impact on the broader humanitarian outcomes around this conflict, including on this as a top priority, to try and help these hostages in any way that we can. And so weve been seeking access to them to try and provide medications, to try and provide and facilitate messages being passed between the families and their hostages, to act as an intermediary to facilitate their release. But weve also been saying from the very beginning that the very taking of hostages is prohibited by International Humanitarian law, the laws of armed conflict, and that civilians should be protected from this. And important protected from this. And important there protected from this. And important there to protected from this. And | important there to make, patrick. Just as you were speaking, we were looking at images on the screen of that handover taking place with mother and daughter hand in hand with the red cross aid worker there, of course, wearing the red cross best. Are you able to tell us anything more about how they seemed when they were released or even a sense from the team when they were able to hand the two women over . I were able to hand the two women over . U, were able to hand the two women over . . , were able to hand the two women over . . , h, were able to hand the two women over . . , ,. , over . I cant really comment on exactly how over . I cant really comment on exactly how the over . I cant really comment on exactly how the welfare, over . I cant really comment on exactly how the welfare, as over . I cant really comment on exactly how the welfare, as it i exactly how the welfare, as it were, or the state of the two hostages. I think that our team, as the rest of us, were just simply extremely relieved that they were being released and that this opportunity had come up. They could play some kind of role in trying to help them and the sides come to a conclusion on their fate, and of course for their families, who had been worried absolutely sick about them for the last two weeks. So we were extremely pleased that this took place, and of course, against this backdrop of this really devastating situation and conflict over the last two weeks. It was that first small sliver of hope that means so much to them as individuals and their but also as a symbol of their but also as a symbol of the first positive small step in this otherwise immense situation of suffering for so many. Absolutely, patrick. I want to touch many. Absolutely, patrick. I want to touch a many. Absolutely, patrick. I want to touch a little many. Absolutely, patrick. I want to touch a little bit many. Absolutely, patrick. I. Want to touch a little bit more on the humanitarian situation there on the ground, because of course, as you know, a convoy of 20 trucks getting in today. The message from the United Nations that that isnt nearly enough. Just talk to us about the needs of the people there on the ground right now in gaza. , , on the ground right now in gaza. ,. , gaza. Thats right. I mean, i think its gaza. Thats right. I mean, i think its clear gaza. Thats right. I mean, i think its clear that gaza. Thats right. I mean, i think its clear that this gaza. Thats right. I mean, i think its clear that this is i think its clear that this is indeed, on the one hand, a very positive step that this has happened, that there has been a small amount of aid that has been able to make its way here to gaza today, but it is indeed a drop in the ocean, as the un have been saying. And youve got 650,000 people that are in desperate need of access to some kind of freshwater. The hospital and Health Infrastructure and system is really on its knees. Doctors have been working in this Health Infrastructure non stop for the last two weeks, having to try and deal with immense numbers of wounded coming in. They themselves dont know whats been happening to their own families. They havent been able to check on them, and some of them are beginning to break down. As israel readies for its promised offensive against hamas, the white house has published details of the billions of military aid it is asking congress to authorise. In a letter sent friday to the acting speaker of the house of representatives, joe biden s budget chief laid out a raft of measures totalling nearly 106 billion. Joe biden announced the package in a Rare Oval Office address on thursday evening in which he sought to draw a link between hamass attack on israel and russias War On Ukraine and asked the American People to keep backing both countries as they defend themselves. More than 60 of the 106 billion mr biden has requested is actually earmarked to aid for ukraines military. Israels military would get a far smaller chunk 14. 3 billion. In both cases, the money also goes to replenishing the uss own stocks of weapons when they are sent to allies. The package also includes humanitarian aid 9. 2 billion in total for ukraine and for gaza. To discuss this, earlier, i spoke to kay bailey hutchison, former United States permanent representative to nato. Ambassador, thank you for being with us. I want to begin by getting your thoughts on the 105 billion package that the Biden Administration wants congress to sign off on for both with funding for ukraine and israel. What did you make of that move, then, by the president to tie the two together in one package and also put money for the southern border, as well, in that plan . I think it is exactly the right thing to do. Im sure the amount will be negotiated. I think assuring that we replenish our own reserves will be an Important Message to our potential adversaries that we are going to replenish our own arms, so that were ready for any eventuality, in case anyone thinks they can move in on this crisis that is happening both in ukraine and in israel. And i think, looking at the southern border, which has been woefully overrun, is an important add and i am glad did the president added that. I think that ukraine and israel are vital Security Interests for the United States, as well as for our allies in nato. Ambassador, so we know this is the plan on paper and i stress on paper. Im wondering if you think domestic politics with a house being without a speaker, impacting International Politics and in turn, the time that the us can support giving to its allies. I think there will be a speaker, i think it will happen and the vast majority of republicans and democrats very much support and understand the stakes in ukraine and in israel. They are vital Security Interests for our populations and for the uk population and all of our nato allies and our nato partners. We have 31 allies, we have a0 partners, so its very important that we speak with one voice, that we are not going to stand by and let ukraine be taken over by russia. They are a sovereign nation. And that we are going to stand with israel that has had a horrendous attack by hamas and i think the Israel Government is now saying that hamas must be wiped out. It isa it is a terrorist organisation. It is a terrorist organisation. It is a terrorist organisation. It is recognised as that by all of our governments. And it is time that we started looking towards what was in the works between israel and saudi arabia, along with our other allies in the middle east, to try and have a Two State Solution for the Palestinian People and try to stop the terrorism that continues to forment by iran. Ijust i just need to ijust need to ask you what weve seen from the rightful republicans were weve seen some support for ukraine dropping off. What you think the kremlin will making of that debate, playing out here in the United States about Funding Dropping for ukraine . What you think the potential consequences could be the fact that this debate is playing out so openly in the United States. Of course, we are a democracy and we are open when we disagree, we all know that but theres no question that the leadership and the majority of the republicans as well as the democrats support ukraine, understand the stakes for our country. If we dont stand up for ukraine, if we dont help ukraine win this war, then the consequences are that Vladimir Putin will try then to recreate another part of the lost soviet union will be a nato ally possibly, and that means all of us will then have to put troops on the ground and take it would be much more expensive than the money we are now spending together now. And i think that the leadership in the Republican Party understands these stakes and i think it will be a i cant say unanimous but certainly, a overwhelming majority that will support ukrainian and israeli aid. Thousands of people have taken part in pro palestinian protests in several cities across the world. Police say up to 100,000 people took part in a pro palestinian march in london. Ten people were arrested, most for public order offences. The co organisers, the palestine solidarity campaign, called for an immediate ceasefire in gaza and for full humanitarian aid to be sent in. The march finished outside downing street. Police had earlier warned that that anyone showing support for hamas would face arrest. And here in washington on saturday, pro palestinian demonstrators marched from the Washington Monument to the us capitol, calling for an immediate ceasefire in gaza. The protest was one of several planned in cities across the us this weekend. In other news, at least six people were killed and 1a injured in the Kharkiv Region in eastern ukraine. According to ukrainian officials, a Russian Missile hit a Postal Distribution Centre belonging to a private delivery company. The victims were civilians working there. President zelensky has expressed condolences and blamed russia for the attack. Pakistans former Prime Minister nawaz sharif has returned home after four years of self imposed exile in london. This was the moment he touched down, days after a Court Granted him protective bail, removing the threat of immediate arrest over his corruption conviction. His return is seen as the launch of his partys Political Campaign ahead of next years elections. The Second Red Danger to life weather warning this week has come into force in Eastern Parts of scotland, with torrential rain and high winds forecast across much of the uk. Its from storm babet, which has already claimed at least three lives and left 40,000 homes without power. Hundreds of flood alerts are in place, and travel is expected to be badly disrupted. And sir bobby charlton, one of Manchester United and englands greatest footballers, has died at the age of 86. For england, he will forever be associated with the world cup victory in 1966. By the time he retired in 1973, he had scored 2115 goals in over 700 games for Manchester United. Sir bobby was diagnosed with dementia in 2020. In a statement, Manchester United said charlton ranked as one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of the club. You are watching bbc news. Stay with us if you can. Hello. Although storm babet is now easing away, well continue to see flooding and disruption over the next day or so. Now, lets just take a look at where the rain has fallen over the past 2a hours. Its been heavy and persistent across parts of england, wales and particularly for northern and eastern scotland, too. If we have a look atjust how much rain has fallen since wednesday with this storm babet, many areas have seen between 100 and 200mm. Now, for places, thats almost twice the expected monthly rainfall. Thankfully, though, sunday is looking drier with lighter winds, too, so a window of much quieter weather on the way. For the rest of the overnight period through into the early hours of monday, still a few showers around across the far north of scotland, one or two in the west. Elsewhere, 2 9 degrees are overnight lows for most of us. Could be a touch cooler first thing in the countryside. But the low pressure thats been such a troublemaker over recent days is drifting away towards the north on sunday, the isobars become more widely spaced, showing that its not going to be as windy as it has been the breeze just coming in from a westerly direction. So, thatll bring one or two showers for north west scotland, perhaps a few for wales, the South West Of England as well. But as they drift eastwards, they tend to ease away, so much drier, thankfully, for eastern scotland, right down towards east anglia in the southeast. A largely dry day towards northern ireland, too, and temperatures ranging between around about ten for stornoway to about 16 down towards the london region. But then, we will see the next area of low pressure just moving in later on monday. Now, this is storm bernard. Its been named by the portuguese Weather Service and its going to bring the next spell of wet and windy weather on monday. So, we start off monday on a dry note. Some mist and some fog patches. Could be a touch of frost. But it clouds over from the south and during the afternoon, this area of rain will spill its way in. To the north of that, most places looking dry, around about 10 16 degrees, but the wet and the windy weather in the south Willjust Push its way a little bit further north. So, into tuesday, you can see where were expecting to see some showers around, turning a little bit breezy again towards the east coast. A bit of uncertainty exactly where this rainfall is going to be by this stage but could be quite unwelcome for some of us. Turning a little bit milder as we see The Rain Coming in from the south after that window of drier weather for some of us sunday into monday. Things really are looking fairly autumnal and unsettled through much of the week ahead. Bye for now. Voiceover this is bbc news. We will have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme. Sings in italian hello from new york, and welcome to our talking movies Martin Scorsese special.
