welcome to bbc news. i'm lukwesa burak. we start with the latest on the israel—gaza war. there's growing diplomatic pressure to find ways to get food and other essential aid into gaza and civilians out in the face of israeli bombardments in retaliation for the attacks by hamas. the group, which is designated as a terror organisation by many western governments including the uk, launched the assault on saturday. these are the main developments on day six of the conflict. the united nations says more than 338,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in gaza, stressing essential food, fuel and water must reach the enclave. the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, has established a national emergency government with opposition leader benny gantz. it comes as israel continues its mass mobilisation of troops. hundreds of thousands are on the southern border with gaza. president biden says he's told mr netanyahu that israel must abide by the rules of war in its fight against hamas. the united states* top diplomat, anthony blinken, is due to land in israel in the next couple of hours. all this while israeli air strikes on gaza continue. the palestinian health ministry said at least 51 people died overnight. this is the scene live in gaza where it has just gone 7:00 in the morning. in the last few hours, the health ministry has confirmed 1,200 palestinians have been killed in retaliatory israeli air strikes, while the same number of people in israel are now thought to have been killed in the multiple assaults last saturday. as we mentioned, the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, and the main opposition leader, benny gantz, have agreed to form an emergency unity government to manage the war with hamas. mr gantz, who's a former army commander, willjoin a war cabinet, along with the prime minister and defence minister. at a news conference, mr gantz said forming the government sent a strong message. translation: our standing here toaether translation: our standing here together shoulder _ translation: our standing here together shoulder to _ translation: our standing here together shoulder to shoulder - together shoulder to shoulder is a message to our enemies and most importantly a message to all citizens of israel. we are altogether. we all soldiers. there is a time for war and a time for peace. now is a time for war. the israeli military says hundreds of thousands of troops are near gaza "ready to execute the mission we have been given." 0ur international editor jeremy bowen has this update on the troop build—up. and a warning — his report contains details and images some viewers may find distressing and upsetting. in the fields and farms on the border wire, in the fields and farms on the borderwire, it's in the fields and farms on the border wire, it's combat soldiers are creating jumping off points to invade gaza. regular units and some of more than 300,000 mobilised with services were preparing for the order to move in. that most israelis believe will come. the buildup that we are seeing here is certainly the clearest evidence i have witnessed that israel is preparing for a grand operation in gaza. if you add this to the formation of a war cabinet, you can see the direction they must be going on. israel, allies are gathering. antony blinken, the us secretary of state is flying in from washington. america's support include weapons and moving an aircraft carrier battle group closer to deter iran's allies from joining. we iran's allies from “oining. we have met iran's allies from “oining. we have the back _ iran's allies from joining. - have the back of the israeli people. we will have it today, habit, and have every day. in the safe rooms, millions of israelis are praying, waiting, often frightened about assumptions they had heard about their safety being crumbled. the government says what it is doing in gaza is defending them. only a few miles from this family, israel's onslaught raises questions about whether it is breaking the laws of war. in gaza, israel have caused immense damage in only five days. international humanitarian law obliges belligerents to protect civilian lives. israel says all this is legitimate self defence against hamas. but it is also cutting up supplies of water, food, fuel and power to more than 2 million people. and killed hundreds of civilians. translation: fix, killed hundreds of civilians. translation:— killed hundreds of civilians. translation: ., , ., translation: a lot my father, my brother. _ translation: a lot my father, my brother, uncle, _ translation: a lot my father, my brother, uncle, two - or be killed. thank you very much indeed. take care. i so that's the view from tel aviv. but what about gaza? well, bbc verify is continuing to monitor the impact of israeli air strikes in gaza. several videos, released by the israel defence force, have shown their attacks. one was on the islamic university of gaza, targeted between 0ctober10 and ii. this is an satellite image of what the university looked like before the strike. bbc verify matched the buildings* distinctive shapes to know that this image was taken after the strike. israel says hamas was using the university as "a training camp for weapons development "and military intelligence. " that's a claim we haven't been able to independently verify. and these images show the al—rimal area before the strikes and this is a satellite image of the same neighbourhood, which came through yesterday, and has been located by our colleagues at bbc verify. gaza is of course under siege and communications are extremely difficult. but our correspondent rushdi abu alouf sent us this update on what it's been like in gaza city. i couldn't say the heaviest strike in my 20 years covering this, it was by far the happiest i have ever seen. the destruction in this neighbourhood. this neighbourhood. this neighbourhood has been the safe haven for most of the gaza, most of the street in this neighbourhood was destroyed because i was among families who were suffering during. when, 2 million people lost their facilities today, we talked about essential services such as medicare said food supplies have been suspended because of that. the humanitarian corridor for leading food and medicine and fuel into gaza is a must for palestinians. i understand tonight from a senior egyptian official that they are working closely with other countries and contesting hamas to try and find a draft of inaudible to allow goods and fuel to come into egypt from gaza. america's top diplomat, antony blinken, is due to arrive in israel in the next few hours to discuss measures to bolster its security. in an address tojewish community leaders at the white house, president biden described saturday's assault as an act of sheer evil and the deadliest day forjews since the holocaust. the white house said 22 americans are known to have been killed, with 17 americans unaccounted for. we want to make it real clear. we're working on every aspect of the hostage crisis in israel, including deploying experts to advise and assist with recovery efforts. now, the press are going to shout to me and many of you are that what are you doing to bring these get these folks home? if i told you, i wouldn't be able to get them home. folks, there's a lot we're doing. a lot we're doing. i have not given up hope. i'm bringing these folks home. live now to javed ali, a former white house counterterrorism official and now at the university of michigan's ford school. hello and welcome to bbc news. i wonder if we can start off with antony blinken*s upcoming visit to israel. what is the likely hoping to achieve? i would think that the secretary blink and's troop is going to show that the united states is standing firmly behind israel even though looks like israel is poised to enter into a different phase of this campaign against hamas in the gaza strip —— blinken. that means the us will continue to support israel for some period of time, but nobody knows right now from the outside how long will this military next phase of the military operation in gaza last. will it be weeks or days? and what will the impact be, again, this potentially could put the united states in a difficult position of civilian casualties start to mount, if the israelis themselves were to take a lot of casualties. secretary blinken will get on the ground and try to figure out where can the us health, where can the united states manoeuvre around at what point should the us try to urge some kind of diplomatic end to the fighting. it seems like it will happen.— like it will happen. that's 'ust like it will happen. that's just talk _ like it will happen. that's just talk about _ like it will happen. that's just talk about the - like it will happen. that's. just talk about the military aid that is heading its way to israel. i wonder if you could just describe to us what will be sent to help mr netanyahu, and also, the status of the uss gerald ford . what has been reported as one ofthe . what has been reported as one of the most _ . what has been reported as one of the most significant _ of the most significant military manoeuvres so far from the united states is the dispatch of this carrier off the coast of israel, and there is a tremendous amount of capability within that naval flotilla. 0bviously, capability within that naval flotilla. obviously, a large aircraft area, —— carrier, destroyer, cruisers. buti don't believe those capabilities are there to assist israel with their military operation, and gaza's president —— president bunn has said the carrier is there to project force and to show deterrence to other countries or actors in the region that might want to get involved —— biden. and that is the message. there is another type of military made that israel is probably requesting with regards to small arms, ammunition, ammunition, other equipment they might need either in reserve or as they think about the beginning of the opening phase of their ground campaign. so there are a lot of moving pieces probably under way to get the military support that israel needs from the united states.— the united states. thank you very much — the united states. thank you very much for— the united states. thank you very much for that. - the united states. thank you very much for that. thank . the united states. thank you i very much for that. thank you. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. let's look at some other stories making news in the uk. robert brown, who killed his wife 13 years ago, has had his automatic release from prison blocked. the pilot who bludgeoned joanna simpson to death was convicted of manslaughter, but was due to be released next month after serving half of his 26—year jail sentence. the government has launched a uk—wide consultation over plans to crack down on children and teenagers vaping. the proposals include limiting flavours aimed at enticing children, and possible restrictions on disposable e—cigarettes. flights have resumed at luton airport after a huge fire ripped through a terminal car park on tuesday, causing disruption to thousands of travellers. the blaze, which is believed to have been accidental, caused the building to suffer a significant structural collapse. those are some of the top stories on bbc news. live from london, this is bbc news. it's day six of the israel—gaza war. this is the scene live in gaza where the palestinian health ministry say at least 51 people were killed in overnight strikes. this is the scene in ashkelon in israel. if we can just show you that. that is just across the gaza border into israel. this is where israeli forces are gathered as fighting with hamas enters its sixth day, whilst this is the view from israel's border with lebanon. there have also been a number of incidents over the last few days with hezbollah. around the world, we have seen demonstrations and protests in support of both israelis and the palestinians. these are images from a vigil held in manchester last night. people turned out to show solidarity with those who are suffering in israel. there were similar gatherings elsewhere in the uk including leeds and glasgow. to belgium next, where a rally in support of israel took place near the european parliament building in brussels. many of the people who attended held signs saying "kidnapping". about 500 people gathered outside the united nations building in geneva in switzerland to show their support for israel. many were holding large israeli flags. to austria next, and a pro—israel demonstration was held in vienna. the rally took place in front of the historic hofburg palace and was attended by high—ranking government officials and prominent public figures. just staying in vienna for a moment where hundreds of pro—palestinian demonstrators gathered in defiance of a ban. the police had refused to grant a permit for the rally, but chose not to disperse the protesters. to south africa next, where members of a palestinian support group held a protest outside the united states consulate injohannesburg to show support for palestinians in gaza. demonstrators rallied in toronto in canada in support of palestinians, although prime minister justin trudeau posted, condemning demonstrations he said were taking place in support of hamas. finally, hundreds ofjordanians took to the streets of amman, waving palestinian flags in a show of support of gaza. a large percentage ofjordan's population is made up of palestinians. now, the armed wing of hamas says it has freed an israeli woman and her two children who it had been detaining since its attacks inside israel. with me is said shehata from bbc arabic. thank you forjoining us here today. i wonder if we could first start off with the state or what we know about hostages that had been taken by hamas. so far the estimated number is between 100 and 150 persons, but still that is an estimate, but still that is an estimate, but there is no definite number. this is a number the civil sources talk about. when the brigades announced through a video on its channel and al jazeera used it, releasing one of the israeli women with her two children, it shows, not verified from other sources, but it shows the will of hamas to negotiate and the pressure and destruction is excessive in the eyes of the palestinians and hamas. so even the israeli media saying it is not true, these three people were not taken together from the start, but the circumstances around it shows it might be true. i am not saying it is true but it might be true because after the meeting of the foreign minister, in order to show that they are not targeting civilians and all the propaganda and pictures showing kidnapping and killing, so try to correct and improve its image. at the same time, the negotiation is very important for them because you need to negotiate with israel because the damage in israel is not much. they are wanting revenge from what has happened, and if we look at netanyahu, the prime minister and the we look at netanyahu, the prime ministerand the dim we look at netanyahu, the prime minister and the dim minister for defence, it is a problem for defence, it is a problem for them. they need to ease the tensions and pressures on them. thank you very much for that. we leave you with the seen live across gaza. this is bbc news. hello. some fresh autumn weather on the way. chilly even for some of us in northern parts of the uk, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. it's been so mild across so many parts of the country so far this month, so we're back to really where we should be this time of the year. so, this is what's happening on thursday. this is the air mass, the temperature of the atmosphere. so, still some warmth and humidity across the south. in fact, temporarily, thursday into friday, we'll see a resurgence of that warmth as the wind direction changes temporarily from the southwest. but then, come saturday and sunday, it's a northerly, and that autumn chill arrives, a touch of frost across northern areas by night, even a little bit of wintriness across the scottish hills. so let's have a look at the forecast then through the early hours, really quite cloudy and wet across some southern parts of the uk, but to the north of that, it's generally clear and chilly. in the glens of scotland, temperatures barely above freezing, but most of our northern towns and cities, around 3 to 4 degrees celsius. in the south, on the south coast, it's still really quite mild, sort of remnants of that warmth leftover, but a lot of cloud during the day, little dribs and drabs of rain, and then, i think, across much of yorkshire, northern ireland, the bulk of scotland, a bright, if not sunny day, just scattered, fairweather clouds, 13, 1a, still 18 in the south. but then come the evening, widespread heavy rain sweeps into many parts of england and wales, so a really wet thursday night into friday, a really complicated weather map here. 0n the one hand, we have a weather front coming in, a low pressure from the south, then we've got a cold front coming in from the north. you can just about see it here. so i think, for a time, wet in the morning on friday, temporarily, that warmth, it literally clips the southeast with temperatures up to 20 in london, 19 in norwich, but the colder autumn air arrives in scotland, northern ireland and northern england as well. so it's a northerly, temporarily a northerly, but then into next week, high pressure builds, and we're right in the middle in the centre of this area of high pressure, so that means the winds will be generally light, there'll be a lot of sunshine around, so it's going to feel very, very pleasant indeed, i think. a lot of crisp autumn sunshine on the way. that's it from me. bye—bye. live from london, this is bbc news. tough times ahead, but tougher for some than for others. soaring uk interest rates could be increasing inequality warns one of the bank of england's policy makers with a possible recession on the way. the recession on the way. chances of recession or not recession the chances of recession or not recession are going to be pretty equally balanced. we should be prepared for that, we should be prepared for that, we should be prepared for that, we should be thinking about, it is not going to be red times ahead. —— great times. also coming up, highly uncertain: doubts grow about the direction of the world's biggest economy. but officials at the us federal reserve agree the cost of borrowing won't be coming down "for some time". plus, tripping up on wall street: shares of sandal maker birkenstock stumble on their first day of trading. and suited to the job? why italy's master tailors are facing a succession crisis with not enough young people prepared to take up the craft.
