pictures are not amazingly in focus but i can tell you that what we have been seeing is very, very high wind and torrential rain. the hong kong government said people should stay in their homes, away from exposed doors, stay away as long as they possibly can, a bit of advice that this man clearly is not heeding, it looks like he is going on a jog or going outside to film something. anyway, the government has said people should stay inside and not come out. schools have not opened, businesses have closed, you can see a big branch of a tree has been downed and hong kong is really bracing itself for something that hasn't happened in many years. we know that this is the highest storm alert you can possibly get, the strongest hit the region in decades and we know that earlier on the chinese government or the chinese region, one nearly hong kong has said that it is also preparing. it has said it is preparing for the storm to hit. now the chinese southern coast of course is going to be hit very hard as well. for something to be cold a super—tight, it needs to sustain a wind strength of 150 mph and this one will hit 125. i can imagine people within hong kong are very worried indeed. i want to cross live now to speak to a resident. joining me now is anna adasiewicz. ican i can see behind you the wind and rain looks horrendous. tell me more about what is happening where you the typhoon now from our weather presenter, sarah keith—lucas. hello. well, yes, we have seen a very busy spell in the typhoon season over the past week or so, and we've got more to come. so typhoon saola is the one we're keeping an eye on at the moment. it's got a really well defined eye to the system. so here's the satellite image you can see. this is typhoon saola here. you can see it rotating. it's a large typhoon and it's moving its wayjust gradually close to the coast of the southwest of china, approaching hong kong. at the moment, it's going to be probably the worst typhoon to impact hong kong in around about five years. and then following close on its heels, similar area will be the next typhoon haikui, which is just pushing in towards taiwan at the moment. but let's take a look at the track of typhoon saola first and over the next few days it's going to move its way close to the coast here of hong kong, hong kong and guangdong. there could be about 300 millimetres of rain falling over the mountainous areas there before it then curls back probably in towards the south china sea, affecting hainan and the peninsula as well. so let's take a look at the rainfall associated with this system. you can see the green colours here indicating the torrential rainfall. it's going to move very close to hong kong over the next 2a hours or so. but of course, notjust the rain. these really strong winds coming in from an easterly direction. they're going to be pushing up the sea level across the region so we could see coastal inundation as the sea rises by around about three metres compared to normal around the hong kong region, pushing off then gradually towards the southwest. but you can see already the next storm system lining up and that's going to push its way across taiwan and potentially make a second landfall around a similar area in southern china into next week as well. so it's that combination of the heavy rainfall, those strong winds and also that potential coastal inundation that's going to mean some some very severe weather right across the region, certainly over the next few days. we will keep across what is happening in hong kong and south china. the government here in the uk is facing calls to "come clean" about the scale of the problems facing school buildings in england, after some have been forced to close because they were made with concrete prone to collapse. more than 100 schools are scrambling to put emergency measures in place before children return from summer holidays. for most, that will be in just a few days' time. the closures were announced after ministers said they had seen "new evidence" on the type of concrete, known as raac. we begin our coverage with this report from our education reporter vanessa clarke. it's just days to the start of the new term. and this school in bradford is just one of more than 100 across england that has been told it has to close some classrooms where faulty concrete has been found. parents say the school is working really hard to move students to different areas on site, but it is a worry. it is a little bit concerning that it's so close to going back to school, but these things happen, don't they? i'd rather my child not be in school than the school fall down around him. the concrete known as raac is lightweight and was used in many public buildings, mostly between the *50s and *90s. it's usually found in rooves and some walls and floors. it is weaker than traditional concrete and experts say has a life span of 30 years. many public buildings, like hospitals and schools are affected. ministers say they are now taking a more cautious approach following recent cases where raac failed. what we learnt over the summer was that there are a number of cases in schools, but in also non—school buildings and in england and outside england where raac that we previously thought was safe or low—risk actually has failed. so we took swift action to change the guidance yesterday. the problem was first highlighted five years ago. some are questioning why this announcement has been made so close to students returning to schools. we've been talking to the government for quite some time about this. - it would have been useful to know a bit earlier than we have - done a few days before - children are due to go back. teachers will go back- in most cases before that. so it's important that we do get. on with that, but it would be nice to know in advance of that. however, local government is very resilient in these matters, - as are our education colleagues as well. i we'll make this work- as fast as we possibly can. this is one of at least a dozen schools in scotland that is affected and some in northern ireland and wales are also being checked. structural surveys of hundreds of schools, colleges and nurseries in england with suspected raac are continuing, so more could soon be added to the growing list. live now to sue patterson, senior industrial liaison manager at mtc manufacturing technology centre. good to talk to you. we are talking to you because you are responsible for programmes such as modern methods of construction and can explain to people what the problem is with the specific type of concrete. 0ne is with the specific type of concrete. one thing i want to know, why was it used if we know it has a 30 year shelf life? you why was it used if we know it has a 30 year shelf life?— 30 year shelf life? you rightly said earlier raac _ 30 year shelf life? you rightly said earlier raac is _ 30 year shelf life? you lightweight form of concrete, it was used in buildings between 19505 and 19905 which was post—war era. at the time, it was believed to have a life of 60 years, we are only learning now it is more likely 30 years. it is found in flat roofs mainly and there is some evidence of it in walls and some evidence of it in walls and some floors. the challenge at the moment is the methods of detecting raac. at the moment it is through visual surveys and taking samples. tho5e visual surveys can be subjective and taking samples can add further risk. we need to be looking at existing technologies that illegally detained. the investigation in pakistan centres on the death of ten—year—old sara sharif, who was found dead in woking, in surrey on the 10th of august. herfather urfan, his partner and brother travelled to pakistan the day before sara's body was found. police in pakistan have been searching for the trio and have now been accused by their relatives of holding them without any legal justification while doing so. 0ur correspondent caroline davies has more. this is the second time that the pakistan—based family of urfan sharif have accused the pakistan police of illegally detaining them during questioning. now, the first time this happened, the pakistan police said that they wouldn't arrest two of urfan sharif*s pakistan—based brothers. but we haven't heard the police response yet. that is due to come on monday. of course, the background to all of this, the reason why the family are being questioned is trying to find the location of urfan sharif, his partner, and his brother faisal malik. that's in relation to their investigation back in the uk of what happened to sara sharif, the ten—year—old girl whose body was found in a house in woking on the 10th of august. the surrey police have been very clear that they want to question these three individuals. at the moment there is no arrest warrant out for them and they are not currently named as suspects. now also appearing outside of the court today, we found urfan sharif*s father, muhammad sharif. he spoke to the bbc and he told us that sara sharif had visited pakistan on a couple of occasions. he described her as being a lovely girl that was much loved by the family. now he has said to us that he does not know the location of our friend sharif or faisal malik. and the search continues. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. let's look at some other stories making news. one of the uk's biggest mortgage lenders say house prices have seen their biggest annual fall since 2009. the figures from nationwide show prices dropped by 5.3% lower than the year before. it said higher borrowing costs for buyers had led to a slowdown in activity in the housing market. concerns are being raised that blood cancer patients are facing round trips of 200 miles or more to access some of their care in argyll. charity blood cancer uk said vulnerable patients are making long journeys after the loss of some local services in 0ban. nhs greater glasgow and clyde say virtual consultations are available, but in—person appointments are at a centre in glasgow. a welsh rally has been recognised for its environmental sustainability by formula 0ne's governing body. race organisers said it's the first event to fully offset the emissions of all competing vehicles. it is the only uk rally to receive fia's environmental accreditation, two years in a row. you're live with bbc news. a court has sentenced two members of the far—right proud boys militia to long prison terms for storming the us capitol building in january 2021. joseph biggs, a former leader of the proud boys, was given 17 years, one of the longest sentences among the hundreds convicted for the capitol attack. prosecutors say biggs was a key figure in the organised attempts to forcibly overturn presidentjoe biden's 2020 election victory. another leader, zachary rehl, received 15 years. let's hear now from norman pattis, the attorney who represented the proud boys leaderjoseph biggs. after the sentencing he drew the link between his client and donald trump. let's listen to what he said. i think there is a broader country, a crisis of legitimacy going on in this country right now. look at the current presidential race, where's donald trump in all of this? he stood on the ellipse, basically told people, 7a million of his followers, the election stolen. go to the go to the capitol. fight like hell. you won't have a country any more. some people listened to him. were they supposed to know that he was full of hot air? and was he full of hot air? i look forward to his trials. i look forward to seeing him testify someday. you know, if your president tells you your country's been stolen, the country that people fought and died for, people are trying to take your vote from you, how are you supposed to react to that? and these people reacted violently and to their detriment. we spoke earlier to cbs correspondent scott macfarlane in washington on the lengthy sentencing. terrorism —related content does not apply. the judge thinks there was an element of terror here, but not an attempt to, i'm sorry, produce mass casualties, not like blowing up a building, he says, ortraining on a terrorist battlefield. so the judge seems to have fixated on this range of 15 to 18 years. and what is it at this point the highest level prosecution from january 6, seditious conspiracy was the charge here, plotting to violently block the peaceful transfer of power. south africa's president cyril ramaphosa has called for urgent action to tackle the problems of housing in inner—city areas after 7a people died in a fire injohannesburg. the cause of the blaze has not yet been established. it's been claimed that many of the residents were migrants, who were renting rooms from criminal gangs who had taken over the former industrial building. 0ur correspondent shingai nyoka sent us this update from johannesburg. a day after the fire broke out, emergency services are still at the scene conducting one final sweep in search of remains. and the families are also still here in search of answers. and some of that trauma is visible on their faces. some of them bear the physical scars of the events of yesterday, broken bones, head injuries. over 70 people are now confirmed to have died, and the grim task of identifying them is underway. but many of the relatives here say that their relatives are still missing and they don't know whether they made it out alive. the south african government has pledged to assist the survivors, but it's a very difficult situation for many of them because they are undocumented migrants and so it's unclear whether they will come forward to get that assistance. and so in the second day after the fire, a lot of people here are unsure about what happens next. stay with us here on bbc news. hello there. meteorologically speaking, the first day of september is the first day of autumn, and with the changing of the season, we are changing the weather, something drier and warmer on the way through the weekend with some spells of sunshine. still some showers around through the rest of today. and a band of thicker cloud affecting parts of northern england, southern scotland and northern ireland. a little bit of rain with that best of the sunshine across the northern half of scotland. temperatures between 1a and 23 degrees. so already turning a little bit warmer down towards the south east. and then as we head through tonight, we will see some areas of cloud, some mist and fog will start to develop as well, especially across england, wales and northern ireland. it is going to be another rather chilly nights across the highlands. temperatures once again could drop quite close to freezing in a few locations milder further south. but the story of saturday is one of high pressure which is set to build across the uk. now, underneath this area of high pressure, we will have some mist and fog to start the morning that will tend to lift and click. take a while to do so in places, particularly in northern ireland, one or two light showers are possible, but most places will be fine with some sunshine. a bit more cloud will get into the far north west of scotland with a strengthening breeze. but temperatures 21 degrees for aberdeen, glasgow and belfast, 2a degrees in london through saturday night. 0ur area of high pressure will still be with us. this frontal system grazing into the north of scotland that will bring some outbreaks of rain during sunday, especially across the north. but some other northern and northwestern parts, more of a breeze here as well. and northwestern parts, but further south, some good spells of sunshine and some real warmth. even parts of eastern scotland, up to 22 or 23 degrees, 25 or 26 down towards the southeast of england. and that's a warming trend is set to continue into the new week. 0ur area of high pressure looks set to move a little further eastwards. areas of low pressure trying to squeeze in from the west. and this, broadly speaking, will bring us a southerly flow of air, bringing something warmer in our direction from the continent. so temperatures as we head through the middle parts of the week could well get into the mid to high 205, maybe somewhere touching 30 degrees. it is likely to turn more unsettled from the west by the end of the week. in the us, the latest employment numbers show a surprisejump in hiring, so the big question is, will this sway the fed to press pause on
