high pressure is building in, bringing dry, warm and sunny weather but for now we have to contend with low pressure bringing weather fronts towards the south and west of the country, this is where we've seen the rain. further north, some good spells of sunshine around. i've got the satellite and radar on here, the rain is northern ireland, wales, the south west midlands and southern england where as much as eastern england where as much as eastern england at the north of england and scotland will have a fine afternoon with wood, sunny spells around, variable cloud here and there and that's how it will remain. it's here we'll see the best of the temperatures in the next few hours, up temperatures in the next few hours, up to 20 or 21 degrees in eastern england. in the cloud and rain, mid to high teens. some of the rain will pepper across northern ireland and wales later on. we could see thundery rain move through the channel this evening and overnight scraping the south coast, the channel islands catching rain. the weather front begins to move northwards lying across central parts of the uk by the end of the night. quite mild and muggy in the south, tonight cooler with the clear skies in scotland. tomorrow, the weather front lying across northern ireland, southern scotland and northern england so patchy rain here. to the north of it bright, one or two showers and to the south, sky is brightening up, sunny spells and a scattering of showers. because there is more sunshine around, up to 22 degrees in central and southern areas, the high teens further north. for the weekend it's looking pretty good, i haven't said that in a while. high pressure building on, largely dry and sunny. this is the pressure chart for saturday and sunday. there is a chance of these weather fronts and low pressure just skirting the north—west quarter of the uk as we head into sunday but saturday starts off mainly dry, some mist and fog around which will tend to clear, lots of sunshine in the afternoon. more please and cloud for central scotland, a warmer day for saturday across the board, down to 23 degrees in the south. sunday, we do it allagain, 23 degrees in the south. sunday, we do it all again, plenty of sunshine. we will see this weather front encroach into north—west scotland bringing rain to highlands and islands, a stronger breeze here but further south sunshine, very like winds, up to 2a or 25 degrees through central and southern areas so it's warming up as well and as we move through the first week of september there will be a lot of dry and so they weather around but towards the end of the week increasing chance of showers moving up increasing chance of showers moving up from the south. that's the bbc news at 0ne pm. there's more on the website. the news continues on bbc one are we join hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm will perry. here's what's coming up. another big day for british players at the us open, with andy murray leading the way in the second round. the champions league draw takes place later but it won't include rangers who were sent packing by psv on a calamitous night in the qualifiers. and in formula one, lewis hamilton and george russell sign contracts to continue as mercedes* drivers for at least the next two years. welcome along. it's a big day for the british players in the singles at flushing meadows today with six in action after they all made it through their first round matches on monday. andy murray takes on grigor dimitrov — the nineteenth seed from bulgaria — in the first match up on arthur ashe court. murray secured his 200th grand slam win on tuesday — an impressive three set victory over frenchman corentin moutet. here's a check on the rest of the british players in action. dan evans, cameron norrie, jack draper and katie boulter all play along withjodie burrage, who faces the match of her life against second seed aryna sabalenka on louis armstrong. caroline wozniacki's tennis comeback has certainly hit the ground running. the former world number one retired in 2020, started a family, and the us open is herfirst grand slam since returning to the sport. and she's now into the third round after producing a vintage performance to beat number 11 seed petra kvitova in straight sets under the lights on arthur ashe. wozniacki has reached the us open final twice before — losing in 2009 and 2014. maybe this will be her year. two of the top men's seeds went out overnight. chinese qualifier zhang zhizhen upset last year's finalist and fifth seed casper ruud, while swiss player dominic stricker delivered a shock by grinding out a five set win over greek seventh seed stefanos tsitsipas. no problems though for the three—time champion novak djokovic. he's into round three after beating the spaniard bernabe zapata miralles in straight sets. djokovic is aiming to match margaret court with a record—equalling 24th major title. i have two sometimes raise the voice in orderfor our team to hear us, or for us to hear them, because otherwise we have to communicate with the signs or signals. i'm actually supportive of the on court coaching, headset communication or whatever ways of getting more coaching, i think it's good. uefa president aleksander ceferin has described the behaviour of spanish football federation president luis rubiales as "inappropriate" — but he's called for fifa's investigation to be allowed to run its course. rubiales has refused to quit for kissing spain player jenni hermoso on he lips after their world cup win over england. chelsea manager emma hayes has been giving her opinion on how spains* squad have been treated. they haven't been hired over a long period of time, so what has kept them going for all? probably each other. you know what, we can, i think, finding a smile in something which is quite shocking reveals an awful lot about the situation rather than the person will stop i think someone likejenni hermoso, there was no interview —— but you can see in her interview after the game she was completely uncomfortable but nobody has been listening to them for such a long period of time. rangers were on the wrong end of a revenge mission last night. a year ago they beat psv eindhoven to make the champions league group stage. but this time a 5—1 defeat on dutch soil means it's the europa league instead. our sports correspondent katie gornall reports. a humbling, sobering night for rangers. 3 a humbling, sobering night for ranuers. * , . ., ., a humbling, sobering night for raniers, * , ., ., ., ., rangers. a year ago in eindhoven, there were — rangers. a year ago in eindhoven, there were very — rangers. a year ago in eindhoven, there were very different - rangers. a year ago in eindhoven, | there were very different emotions for rangers. back then they beat psv to reach the champions league group stages. this time the dutch found a ruthless streak. rangers started brightly but the warning signs were there from psv is a schmelzer barry landed the first blow. there is no stopping those. michael beale knew once again his side would have to beat the odds as well as the dutch but in the second half, sam parry made the task even harder. fans feared the worst, so too the players. they needed a lifeline and the captain delivered. but their hold lasted all 91 seconds as luuk de jong had hold lasted all 91 seconds as luuk dejong had the stadium bouncing once again. psv would score a fourth before i would get even worse for rangers, an own goal to round off the night. it's a disasterfor rangers. psv had their reward and the revenge while rangers had little time to lick their wounds, it is celtic next. so rangers miss out on the champions league but will be in the tomorrow's europa league draw alongside liverpool, west ham and brighton, and maybe aberdeen if they beat bk haecken at pittodrie this evening. rangers boss michael beale says despite dropping down, the quality of teams will stsill be high. we have omitted, it, we're not going to deny being disappointed. i think we do the hardest opponent we could draw at this stage of the competition, if i look at some of the other games. going to the europa league, this year looks as strong as ever with teams like liverpool and other sites in there that he can face so we will wait and see what the draw brings. the draw for the group stage takes place later today with five british teams involved. one of those is newcastle, they finished in the top four last season and qualified for the competition for the first time since the 02—03 season. they'll be in pot four along with celtic. the scottish champions could face current holders manchester city, manchester united or arsenal who return to the competiton for the first time in seven years. teams from the same country, remember, cannot be drawn together. aberdeen will be hoping to be involved in the europa league draw tomorrow. they take on swedish side bk hacken at pittodrie in their play—off second leg with sides level at 2—2 after the first match. and two big games in the europa conference qualifying play offs as well. hearts travel to greece hoping to overturn a 2—1 first leg deficit against paok salonika. not too many concerns for aston villa though. they carry a 5—0 advantage into their match against hibernian at villa park. the big shock in the league cup last night saw top flight sheffield united beaten by league one lincoln city on penalties in round two. everton also looked like they'd be heading out to lower league opposition, but scored two late goals to come from behind to win 2—1 at doncaster, who are bottom of league two. new signing beto scored on his debut, as everton secured their first victory of the season. the full third round draw is on the bbc website and app. gareth southgate will announce his latest england squad this afternoon — ahead of their euro 2024 qualifier with ukraine and a friendly with scotland. and one of the big questions will be whether jordan henderson is included — following his move to saudi arabia. if the former liverpool captain is left out — it will likely signal the end of his england career, which has seen him win 77 caps. it's transfer deadline day tomorrow, plenty of surprise deals likely to come but brighton are close to sealing one today. they've agreed a loan deal with barcelona for young spaniard ansu fati. the highly—rated 20—year—old was part of spain's world cup squad last year. fati had been linked with tottenham but is understood to have been impressed by brighton's style of play under manager roberto de zerbi. elsewhere, dean henderson's drawn—out departure from manchester united is finally coming to a head. crystal palace have agreed a deal for the england international. the deal is expected to be completed today. and you can stay across all the transfer news as the window closes with a special football news show, live tomorrow night at 10pm until 11.30pm on the bbc iplayer, sport website and the red button. lewis hamilton and george russell will continue as mercedes* driver line—up for at least the next two years. hamilton's signed a new contract that will extend his spell with the team to 13 years and keep him in f1 well past his 40th birthday. russell, whojoined mercedes in 2022, has also signed a two—year deal. for hamilton, it allows him to continue that quest for a record eighth world drivers* title. england cricket captain heather knight has challenged her side to use the t20 and one—day series* against sri lanka as a chance to refine their skillsets. england won both white—ball series against australia last month and will expect to beat sri lanka, who are eighth in the world. the first t20 match is at hove at six o*clock this evening. we talked about after the ashes as well wanted to keep moving forward as a team because with the world cup as a team because with the world cup a year away, australia will go back and other teams will be looking to get better and improve and it*s important we keep moving forward and there*s a lot of areas we still get better in and keep developing and come bangladesh in october, we want to be in a place where we are a better side than we are at the moment. i guess this is the start of that cycle. post—ashes. that*s what her next focus is, the world cup. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that*s bbc.co.uk/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. welcome back, you*re watching bbc news with me, frankie mccamley. let*s get more now on today*s cabinet reshuffle. grant shapps has been appointed as the new defence secretary. mr shapps has held a number of other cabinet positions, including most recently energy secretary, where he*s been replaced by claire coutinho, who is now transport secretary. mr shapps succeeds ben wallace, who has resigned and is standing down from parliament at the next general election. writing on x, formerly twitter, mr shapps said: professor michael clarke is the former director of the royal united services institute think tank. he was asked how the the uk*s defence community could react to the appointment of grant shapps as the new defence secretary. i think they shrug their shoulders and say, well, this makes no real difference. we all know nothing is going to change until the election and whoever is elected next time round will have to grip defence in a different way. and the fact is, you know, we have defence ambitions which are above our level of preparedness to fund it. the government always assumes that the public don*t want to spend more than about 2% of our gdp on defence. in reality, the public never gets asked about this. i think the public might have a different view about it now that we*re in the middle of a big war in europe. but the governments, all governments have said labour and conservative governments have assumed that the public has no appetite to fund defence beyond the the level that we more or less funded that now. and i don*t think members of the armed forces will expect that to change unless or until after the next election. another government takes a really fresh look at our security, and by then i think our security will be in a worse state than it is now, given what*s happening in the rest of europe. joining me live is colonel hamish de bretton—gordon. he*s former commander of the uk and nato cbrn forces. and ailbhe rea, host of the westminster
