the united states feel threatened as they were our allies and we view the export of chips in to the development of an advanced chip industry in china as threatening. so the export controls too. at the same time, the administration has been sending signals to american business about the consequences of investing in china. this notion of them going over there and saying that we want to continue the relationship is very conflicting and ambiguous. to give you an idea, since before donald trump became an president, china's share of us import is down by 25%. in the first six months of this year, us imports from china are down dramatically from last year. china is becoming less of a trading partner for the united states and is becoming less of a trading partnerfor the united states and it is lot to be accomplished here. clearly the us has a special interest on security grounds that are unlikely to change. on the other hand, there is also an interest clearly in us policy to protect certain types of us jobs. policy to protect certain types of usjobs. that is really been policy to protect certain types of us jobs. that is really been the forcing mechanism be fine what was done under trump and continued under the biden administration. none of this is good for the us consumer, the make things more costly. any move to reduce their tariffs would be a good thing but i don't think we can help a lot to be accomplished. in the midst of a situation where china's graph is inevitably slowing. i that is something i think a lot of people miss in this discussion. it is a particularly difficult time for china right now, when you look at some of the statistics, particularly things like economic growth and youth unemployment are facing a slowdown. on that puts the us, europe, the rest of the world in a very different position when it comes to china.— very different position when it comes to china. yes, i think a lot of peeple — comes to china. yes, i think a lot of peeple the industrialised world for the last several decades and they were doing it by acquiring technology from other more advanced countries, by building their physical capital, infrastructure as well as business capital, and then by training their human appellation. all of those things are slowing now. they have caught up in a lot of ways so that growth engine is now dissipated as it must for every economy that mature is. china's graph is slowing, this makes china a little bit less attractive for a us business. it is still a big market but it is not as fast in a growing market. better to go to india other pleasures in southeast asia. it is less imperative from a business angle for us to maintain as open a relationship with china as we once had. this has given room for the more political you look at american firms and of the commons secretary said that a lot of firms come to her and say that they are really finding it difficult to operate in china because of things like fines and sanctions, and being penalised for operating there, and yet at the same time, you might say if you are the chinese firms, you have got an american business coming due saying i want all of these bits worked with some companies in the past and i i challenge. when i have worked with l some companies in the past and i am now and invest in some of those companies, the issue has always been how to mitigate risk. china right now present a lot of different types of risks for companies. number one is operating in china with the anti—espionage laws making it pretty scary for individual employees of multi nationals to be in china. that is a concern. also the supply chain risk that we became aware of during covid is something that companies are responding to. you have a very high degree of youth unemployment in china that means that they are not getting educated and trained in real jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labour force jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labourforce in china jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labour force in china for jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labourforce in china for a lot jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labour force in china for a lot rolling out all exports and imports of things related to semiconductors, just at the very leading edge. nvidia and others are still selling plenty of chips into china and they will continue to do so. the equipment makers will also send equipment china. it is moura to slow china down at the very leading edge so as not to enable their military capabilities to really surpass what the us has. there is definitely room for gains and trade in manufacturing of lower technology goods where china has had a comparative advantage and is likely to continue to do so. where both countries can gain. i think controversial ultra low emission zone has expanded. it has gone from an area covering the city centre to the whole of the capital. it will become the world's largest cleaners zone and means that owners of the most polluting vehicles will have to pay £12 50 a day whilst driving in the area. there are clear benefits for health and air quality but the policy has also sparked concern about how it could affect businesses in the capital. workers at us energy gaint chevron's major liquefied natural gas plants in western australia are to strike next week — a move that could drive up global prices. the dispute over pay and conditions could threaten production at the two sites, which produce more than 5% of the world's lng and around employ around 500 workers. fears of strikes recently pushed up wholesale gas prices in europe. toyota is suspending operations at all of its assembly plants in japan from tuesday afternoon due to a malfunction with its production system. it could bring domestic its president, luis rubiales, to step down. mr rubialies has been heavily criticised for kissing a female player, jenni hermoso, on the lips at the women's world cup final in sydney. it comes after spanish prosecutors opened an investigation into whether the kiss amounted to a sexual assault onjenni hermoso. mr rubiales has resisted calls to quit. our correspondent in madrid is guy hedgecoe. he says there's no sign yet — of mr rubiales agreeing to quit. we haven't heard from mr ruby alice since last friday when he gave a very defiant speech before his own football federation saying he wasn't going to resign, insisting that he had done nothing wrong and that that case was consensual. that was the last we heard from him, since then you mentioned the fact that his own federation has turned against him and has called on him to resign. fifa, the world football governing body, has suspended him provision while it opens disciplinary proceedings against him as well. the pressure is increasing on him and there is enormous pressure from various quarters but what we don't know is his own mindset, whether he intends to bow to this pressure and go quietly or if he will continue to cling onto power even though it appears that he really doesn't have any support left in the football world here in spain. we have heard from one or two of the spanish player saying that they want to get more respect in general and want to be treated better. they think that there should be more equality in women's sport. we have had some comments there from various spanish players giving comments along those lines. jenni hermoso has really been right at the centre of this town for the last week and i think it has been rather unwelcome attention for her because she, like all of her team—mates, wanted to celebrate this world cup victory. and instead of that has really been overshadowed completely by all of these events unleashed by that now infamous case that she received from him. sudan's military chief is in egypt for talks with president abdel fattah al—sisi. it's the first time general abdel fattah al—burhan left sudan since fighting erupted in april between the army and the rival paramilitary rapid support forces. he's looking to shore—up regional security and political support. burhan is also expected to visit saudi arabia and the uae for discussions on ways to end the conflict. thousands of people have been killed and more than 11.5 million displaced in the violence. our africa editor, will ross, told me what it means that general burhan has felt confident enough to leave the country. it seems as though his rival, the general hemedti, rsf forces have perhaps been weakened in the capital somewhat and that has allowed general burhan to make this trip, first of all to port sudan which has become a bit like the de facto capital of the country from where flights can still take off, and he is headed to egypt on what looks like a trip to rally support. what we don't know is what is going on behind—the—scenes. the public message from president el—sisi office is one of, we stand by you, we are in favour of the stability of sudan and the territorial integrity. so, a message of support for general burhan. then the general talking about wanting to end the war and saying he doesn't want to stay in power but that is very different from what he has been saying in recent days, he has talked about, no point in talking to the enemy forces as he calls them, the rsf. we want to carry on fighting and crush the rebellion. those are his words. so it is hard to know what is going on behind—the—scenes but egypt is a backer of the general, whether it is going to offer any military support or whether it is pushing for dialogue behind—the—scenes, we don't really know at the moment. can you give us an update of what is happening on the ground, the humanitarian situation, what is the fighting situation in sudan? well, the fighting situation is dire and it is spreading further across the country. just to give you a specific example of something that has been reported over the last few hours. in the darfur region in the west of sudan, the rival rapid support force are in control of a lot of that city, but the army has been shelling using heavy weaponry into urban areas where people live. and people don't feel safe in their home. many dozens of them took shelter under a bridge, a concrete bridge, because their homes were flimsily built with corrugated iron roofs. they felt they would be safer under the bridge. the army then shelled that fridge, possibly because they wanted to cut it off from the enemy forces. 39 people died under that bridge including women and children. we are hearing that the offensive in the town has been particularly brutal with civilians stuck between the two sides. as you said, 11.5 million people have been forced from their homes, overi million have now left the country, many of them have headed across the border into egypt. so, egypt is worried about a wider insecurity problem. but if you think about it from the civilian's point of view, they mostly wanted the end of the military running things in sudan, they wanted civilians back in power. but instead, they have ended up with two factions of the military fighting each other. they are stuck in the middle and being killed every day. artificial intelligence company deepmind is trying out a digital watermark for ai—generated images. it will be embedded in the pixels — so invisible to the human eye. the company says it's an attempt to come up with something to counter the spread of ai generated disinformation. our technology editor, zoe kleiman has been explaining the significance. it's a really interesting idea, and it's only part of the solution, as you say. it is getting really difficult now to tell the difference sometimes between content that's being generated by ai and that's been generated by humans. and deepmind, which is a massive ai company based here in the uk, hopes that this is maybe part of the solution. so here's how it works. it's a digital watermark, and it's embedded inside an image that's generated by ai. now, if you look at this picture of a cow, you can't see that the watermark is inside the half of the photo with the head of the cow. and that's because it's completely invisible to the human eye. you can only see it if you run it through google's own image generator tool, which is called imagene. and all it says on it is that the image was made by ai. it's got no other information about who made it, where it was made or when it was made. now, this is only a trial at the moment, and deepmind says you have to opt into it. so obviously anyone who's deliberately trying to set out to deceive using an ai image is probably not going to tick that box. but it is an interesting way, perhaps, of looking at how we might protect ai images in the future. in china, for example, you have to watermark or give some suggestion that you're dealing with al content, and they are bringing that in as part of their regulations. and there's every sense that companies are going to have to be transparent about when people are interacting with al. so it is one way of doing it. it's quite robust, deepmind says. if you edit the image, if you change it in any way, that watermark will still remain. but they want people to play around with it. if you like to experiment, they want to track it and see whether it is actually good enough to be a tool that we might use, particularly in the fight against disinformation in the future. thousands have already left their homes in cuba in anticipation of a hurricane, tampa international airport is closing on tuesday. the airport plans to shut government wants to strike in relaxing the rules on pollution of waterways. eu laws require proof in some areas of england that new housing developments wouldn't increase harmful nutrient levels in nearby rivers and wetlands. ministers argue it has held up home—building that is badly needed. under pressure to meet promises made in the last election, the prime minister said scrapping the rules would mean a significant increase in housing supply. today's announcement will unlock 100,000 new homes in communities where people want those homes to be built. that is fantastic for young, first—time buyers. it also will provide an £18 billion boost to our economy and support tens of thousands ofjobs. but while ministers promise to tackle pollution, environmental campaigners are outraged. this is a shocking example of broken promises by the government. they were promising parliament, just two or three months ago that they would not be lowering environmental protection standards and that is exactly what they are now doing with the announcement today. why should we believe any of the promises of rishi sunak and the government in the future about the environment? the government is struggling to meet its own target of 300,000 new homes per year in england. recently, it relaxed the rules around building in cities and now these changes which will affect more rural areas. but whilst most sides agree at westminster that new homes are needed, it is still a politically divisive issue. if parliament approves the change, the government claims building could start a new housing developments within months. in march 1980, 123 people died when a floating oil platform capsized off the norwegian coast. 23 of the workers were british. more than 110 years later, the the united states feel threatened as they were our allies and we view the export of chips in to the development of an advanced chip industry in china as threatening. so the export controls too. at the same time, the administration has been sending signals to american business about the consequences of investing in china. this notion of them going over there and saying that we want to continue the relationship is very conflicting and ambiguous. to give you an idea, since before donald trump became an president, china's share of us import is down by 25%. in the first six months of this year, us lot to be accomplished here. clearly the us has a special interest on security grounds that are unlikely to change. on the other hand, there is also an interest clearly in us policy to protect certain types of us jobs. policy to protect certain types of usjobs. that is really been policy to protect certain types of us jobs. that is really been the forcing mechanism be fine what was done under trump and continued under the biden administration. none of this is good for the us consumer, the make things more costly. any move to reduce their tariffs would be a good thing but i don't think we can help a lot to be accomplished. in the midst of a situation where china's graph is inevitably slowing. i that is something i think a lot of people miss in this discussion. it is a particularly difficult time for china right now, when you look at some of the statistics, particularly things like economic growth and youth unemployment are facing a slowdown. on that puts the us, europe, the rest of the world in a very different position when it comes to china.— very different position when it comes to china. yes, i think a lot of peeple — comes to china. yes, i think a lot of peeple the industrialised world for the last several decades and they were doing it by acquiring technology from other more advanced countries, by building their physical capital, infrastructure as well as business capital, and then by training their human appellation. all of those things are slowing now. they have caught up in a lot of ways so that growth engine is now dissipated as it must for every economy that mature is. china's graph is slowing, this makes china a little bit less attractive for a us business. it is still a big market but it is not as fast in a growing market. better to go to india other pleasures in southeast asia. it is less imperative from a business angle for us to maintain as open a relationship with china as we once had. this has given room for the more political you look at american firms and of the commons secretary said that a lot of firms come to her and say that they are really finding it difficult to operate in china because of things like fines and sanctions, and being penalised for operating there, and yet at the same time, you might say if you are the chinese firms, you have got an american business coming due saying i want all of these bits worked with some companies in the past and i i challenge. when i have worked with l some companies in the past and i am now and invest in some of those companies, the issue has always been how to mitigate risk. china right now present a lot of different types of risks for companies. number one is operating in china with the anti—espionage laws making it pretty scary for individual employees of multi nationals to be in china. that is a concern. also the supply chain risk that we became aware of during covid is something that companies are responding to. you have a very high degree of youth unemployment in china that means that they are not getting educated and trained in real jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labour force jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labourforce in china jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labour force in china for jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labourforce in china for a lot jobs, that reduces the appeal of the labour force in china for a lot rolling out all exports and imports of things related to semiconductors, just at the very leading edge. nvidia and others are still selling plenty of chips into china and they will continue to do so. the equipment makers will also send equipment china. it is moura to slow china down at the very leading edge so as not to enable their military capabilities to really surpass what the us has. there is definitely room for gains and trade in manufacturing of lower technology goods where china has had a comparative advantage and is likely to continue to do so. where both countries can gain. i think controversial ultra low emission zone has expanded. it has gone from an area covering the city centre to the whole of the capital. it will become the world's largest cleaners zone and means that owners of the most polluting vehicles will have to pay £12 50 a day whilst driving in the area. there are clear benefits for health and air quality but the policy has also sparked concern about how it could affect businesses in the capital. workers at us energy gaint chevron's major liquefied natural gas plants in western australia are to strike next week — a move that could drive up global prices. the dispute over pay and conditions could threaten production at the two sites, which produce more than 5% of the world's lng and around employ around 500 workers. fears of strikes recently pushed up wholesale gas prices in europe. toyota is suspending operations at all of its assembly plants in japan from tuesday afternoon due to a malfunction with its production system. it could bring domestic its president, luis rubiales, to step down. mr rubialies has been heavily criticised for kissing a female player, jenni hermoso, on the lips at the women's world cup final in sydney. it comes after spanish prosecutors opened an investigation into whether the kiss amounted to a sexual assault onjenni hermoso. mr rubiales has resisted calls to quit. our correspondent in madrid is guy hedgecoe. he says there's no sign yet — of mr rubiales agreeing to quit. we haven't heard from mr ruby alice since last friday when he gave a very defiant speech before his own football federation saying he wasn't going to resign, insisting that he had done nothing wrong and that that case was consensual. that was the last we heard from him, since then you mentioned the fact that his own federation has turned against him and has called on him to resign. fifa, the world football governing body, has suspended him provision while it opens disciplinary proceedings against him as well. the pressure is increasing on him and there is enormous pressure from various quarters but what we don't know is his own mindset, whether he intends to bow to this pressure and go quietly or if he will continue to cling onto power even though it appears that he really doesn't have any support left in the football world here in spain. we have heard from one or two of the spanish player saying that they want to get more respect in general and want to be treated better. they think that there should be more equality in women's sport. we have had some comments there from various spanish players giving comments along those lines. jenni hermoso has really been right at the centre of this town for the last week and i think it has been rather unwelcome attention for her because she, like all of her team—mates, wanted to celebrate this world cup victory. and instead of that has really been overshadowed completely by all of these events unleashed by that now infamous case that she received from him. sudan's military chief is in egypt for talks with president abdel fattah al—sisi. it's the first time general abdel fattah al—burhan left sudan since fighting erupted in april between the army and the rival paramilitary rapid support forces. he's looking to shore—up regional security and political support. burhan is also expected to visit saudi arabia and the uae for discussions on ways to end the conflict. thousands of people have been killed and more than 11.5 million displaced in the violence. our africa editor, will ross, told me what it means that general burhan has felt confident enough to leave the country. it seems as though his rival, the general hemedti, rsf forces have perhaps been weakened in the capital somewhat and that has allowed general burhan to make this trip, first of all to port sudan which has become a bit like the de facto capital of the country from where flights can still take off, and he is headed to egypt on what looks like a trip to rally support. what we don't know is what is going on behind—the—scenes. the public message from president el—sisi office is one of, we stand by you, we are in favour of the stability of sudan and the territorial integrity. so, a message of support for general burhan. then the general talking about wanting to end the war and saying he doesn't want to stay in power but that is very different from what he has been saying in recent days, he has talked about, no point in talking to the enemy forces as he calls them, the rsf. we want to carry on fighting and crush the rebellion. those are his words. so it is hard to know what is going on behind—the—scenes but egypt is a backer of the general, whether it is going to offer any military support or whether it is pushing for dialogue behind—the—scenes, we don't really know at the moment. can you give us an update of what is happening on the ground, the humanitarian situation, what is the fighting situation in sudan? well, the fighting situation is dire and it is spreading further across the country. just to give you a specific example of something that has been reported over the last few hours. in the darfur region in the west of sudan, the rival rapid support force are in control of a lot of that city, but the army has been shelling using heavy weaponry into urban areas where people live. and people don't feel safe in their home. many dozens of them took shelter under a bridge, a concrete bridge, because their homes were flimsily built with corrugated iron roofs. they felt they would be safer under the bridge. the army then shelled that fridge, possibly because they wanted to cut it off from the enemy forces. 39 people died under that bridge including women and children. we are hearing that the offensive in the town has been particularly brutal with civilians stuck between the two sides. as you said, 11.5 million people have been forced from their homes, overi million have now left the country, many of them have headed across the border into egypt. so, egypt is worried about a wider insecurity problem. but if you think about it from the civilian's point of view, they mostly wanted the end of the military running things in sudan, they wanted civilians back in power. but instead, they have ended up with two factions of the military fighting each other. they are stuck in the middle and being killed every day. artificial intelligence company deepmind is trying out a digital watermark for ai—generated images. it will be embedded in the pixels — so invisible to the human eye. the company says it's an attempt to come up with something to counter the spread of ai generated disinformation. our technology editor, zoe kleiman has been explaining the significance. it's a really interesting idea, and it's only part of the solution, as you say. it is getting really difficult now to tell the difference sometimes between content that's being generated by ai and that's been generated by humans. and deepmind, which is a massive ai company based here in the uk, hopes that this is maybe part of the solution. so here's how it works. it's a digital watermark, and it's embedded inside an image that's generated by ai. now, if you look at this picture of a cow, you can't see that the watermark is inside the half of the photo with the head of the cow. and that's because it's completely invisible to the human eye. you can only see it if you run it through google's own image generator tool, which is called imagene. and all it says on it is that the image was made by ai. it's got no other information about who made it, where it was made or when it was made. now, this is only a trial at the moment, and deepmind says you have to opt into it. so obviously anyone who's deliberately trying to set out to deceive using an ai image is probably not going to tick that box. but it is an interesting way, perhaps, of looking at how we might protect ai images in the future. in china, for example, you have to watermark or give some suggestion that you're dealing with al content, and they are bringing that in as part of their regulations. and there's every sense that companies are going to have to be transparent about when people are interacting with al. so it is one way of doing it. it's quite robust, deepmind says. if you edit the image, if you change it in any way, that watermark will still remain. but they want people to play around with it. if you like to experiment, they want to track it and see whether it is actually good enough to be a tool that we might use, particularly in the fight against disinformation in the future. thousands have already left their homes in cuba in anticipation of a hurricane, tampa international airport is closing on tuesday. the airport plans to shut prove that new housing developments will not cause pollution to nearby rivers. our political correspondent reports. building new homes while protecting the environment. that is the balance of the government wants to strike in relaxing the rules on pollution of waterways. eu laws require proof in some areas of england that new housing developments wouldn't increase harmful nutrient levels in nearby rivers and wetlands. ministers argue it has held up home—building that is badly needed. under pressure to meet promises made in the last election, the prime minister said scrapping the rules would mean a significant increase in housing supply. today's announcement will unlock 100,000 new homes in communities where people want those homes to be built. that is fantastic for young, first—time buyers. it also will provide an £18 billion boost to our economy and support tens of thousands ofjobs. but while ministers promise to tackle pollution, environmental campaigners are outraged. this is a shocking example of broken promises by the government. they were promising parliament, just two or three months ago that they would not be lowering environmental protection standards and that is exactly what they are now doing with the announcement today. why should we believe any of the promises of rishi sunak and the government in the future about the environment? the government is struggling to meet its own target of 300,000 new homes per year in england. recently, it relaxed the rules around building in cities and now these changes which will affect more rural areas. but whilst most sides agree at westminster that new homes are needed, it is still a politically divisive issue. if parliament approves the change, the government claims building could start a new housing developments within months. in march 1980, 123 people died when a floating oil platform capsized off the norwegian coast. 23 of the workers were british. more than 110 years later, the
