intelligence company, deepmind, is trying out a digital watermark for ai—generated images. it will be embedded in the pixels — so invisible to the human eye. the company says it's an attempt to come up with something to counter the spread of ai generated disinformation. our technology editor, zoe kleinman, told me how it will work. it's a really interesting idea and it's only part of the solution, as you say, it is getting really difficult now to tell the difference sometimes between content that has been generated by ai and that has been generated by humans. and deepmind, that is a massive ai company, based here in the uk, hopes that this is part of the solution. so here is how it works. it is a digital watermark and it is embedded inside an image that is generated by ai. if you look at this picture of a cow, you can see that the watermark is inside the half of the photo of the head of the cow, and that is because it is completely ——can�*t see. you can only see it if you run it through google�*s own image generator tool which is called imaging. and all that it says on is that the image was made by ai. it has got no other information about who made it, where it was made, when it was made. now, this is only a trial at the moment and deep mine says that you have to opt into it, so obviously anyone who is deliberately trying to set out to deceive using ai image is probably not going to tick that box. but it is an interesting way perhaps of looking at how we might protect ai images in the future, in china for example, you have to watermark or give some suggestion that you are dealing with al content. they are bringing that in as part of their regulations. there is every sense that companies are going to have to be transparent about when people are interacting with al. so it is one way of doing it, it is quite robust. deep mine says. if you edit the image, if you change it in any way, that watermark will still remain bitter they want people to play around with it, if you like, to experiment, they want to track it and see whether it is actually good enough to be a tool that we might use, particularly in the fight against the disinformation in the future. talk to me a little bit about that fight, why is it so important deep mine says. that these types of initiatives start working out there? well, i think we have been seeing more and more examples, haven't we, of images in particular that have been generated by ai and are being put out on social media and fooling people into thinking that they are the real thing? so we had an image of the pope wearing a parka jacket. we had fake images of donald trump being arrested. and they all look pretty convincing if you don't know that they weren't in fact photographs taken at an actual event. that these types of initiatives start working out there? there is concern that al is going to be used to attempt to spread disinformation in upcoming elections. we have got one coming up in the us, the presidential election, but there is also likely to be one coming up in the uk in the next year oi’ so for a new government. it is only going to be something that people are going to have to be more aware of and more savvy about. and the tech companies, if you like, are being challenged to try to come up with a solution. they have come up with the tools to make these images, and now also it is their responsibility perhaps to come up with a way of making sure people know that what they are looking at is not real. there has been an election in zimbabwe and the president has been elected to a second term of over 52% of the vote there. in the last few minutes, zimbabwe's main opposition party has said that it is calling for a fresh election in zimbabwe and has disputed are the result of last week's vote a band called it a fraud. just to reiterate, the zimbabwe opposition party spokesman has said they are calling on the african union and the sadc to facilitate a return to legitimacy. scientists say that an eight—centimetre worm has been found alive in the brain of an australian woman — that is a world first. we've been speaking to one of the doctors who treated the woman. our laboratory in the hospital, our microbiology laboratory got a call from the surgeon saying we've just discovered a live wriggling worm in this patient�*s brain. it's something we've never seen before. help us out. and as the on call infectious diseases physician at the time, my laboratory colleague involved me and we got to work trying to determine what this worm actually was so we could treat this patient. and we look through all the possibilities and realize that it might be outside the realms of normal human parasites and canberra being a small place, we were able to send it up the road to the csiro, where an animal parasitologist confidently made the diagnosis. what we believe has happened is this so normally this parasite lives in carpet pythons, which are found all over australia. the eggs of the parasite get into the python. feces, which small mammals or marsupials normally or accidentally consume when they're eating foliage, etc. the parasite develops in them until another snake comes along and kills the marsupial or small mammal, and then the life cycle completes itself in the python. what we think has happened here is that our patient collected some native grasses called warrigal greens for consumption, and we think the python feces and parasite eggs have contaminated that. and by touching that and eating that, she's unfortunately inadvertently become infected. so she's an accidental host. i think everyone�*s grabbed on to the live worm being removed from the brain. but look, even if you remove that, there is an important a couple of important take home messages here. even though they've been there's been 100 years between true pandemics, new infections are appearing in the world all the time. there have been 30 in the last 30 years. three quarters of those are animal infections which have been have infected human beings. and as our burgeoning human population encroaches on animal habitats, that interaction between humans, domestic animals, wild animals and flora will lead to more of these infections appearing. so that's really important. also, this parasite is found in snakes and other parts of the world. so raising awareness of this case
