hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm gavin ramjaun. darwin's late winner saves the day forjurgen klopp*s side, against newcastle, in a thrilling comeback. the perfect send off for shrubsole — the southern braves pay tribute to their retiring captain in winning the women's hundred at lord's. and a record—equalling ninth win in a row for max verstappen, after rain causes chaos in the netherlands, on fi's return. welcome to sportsday. what late drama we saw at st james* park, as two goals from darwin nunez helped liverpool beat newcastle 2—1. newcastle had opportunities to kill the game, but were punished by darwin, whose two goals late on gave liverpool a vital away win. all the more sweet, given they were reduced to ten men early on. dan ogunshakin reports. it ended with the response to the travelling support, but for the majority of this match, liverpool looked a little punch drunk. with just four minutes showing on the clock, trent alexander—arnold was shown a yellow card for dissent. and less than 60 seconds later, he wasn't shown a second for a foul on anthony gordon, lucky escape. he didn't make the most of his fortune, this error allowing the former evertonians gordon to open the scoring. a bad day for liverpool soon got even worse. grip free and a red card will stop down to ten, but not out. substituted darwin nunez seized on a newcastle mistake, and out of nowhere, liverpool were level. the message from jurgen klopp was clear, use your heads. mo salah and darwin nunez wisely use their feet. darwin at the hero for those in red, as liverpool's latest evolution underjurgen klopp has a win. a huge win indeed. manchester city are already looking like the team to catch — if anyone can keep up, that is! they battled back to beat to resilient sheffield united side at bramall lane earlier this afternoon, maintaining their winning start to the season, and finishing the day top. 0ur correspondent andy swiss reports. for manchester city, a familiar line—up, but an unfamiliar leader. assistant boss juanma lillo taking charge, while pep guardiola recovers from back surgery. and without him, city didn't quite look themselves. they won a first—half penalty after a handball from sheffield united'sjohn egan. surely the mighty erling haaland would score? but he didn't, and it was still goalless at the break. city were still dominant, and with half an hour left, jack grealish*s cross hit emphatically by haaland, and it was surely came over. the host didn't look hard though, and with just five minutes left, guess what? jayden bogle*s equaliser sent bramall lane into dreamland. but not for long, as moments later, a rodri rocket snatched victory for city. some fearfor the champions, but they are top of the table, and as ever, they will take some shifting. well, pep guardiola was missing from that win, after having minor back surgery, but the side coping just as they expected in his absence. for sheffield united, though, they'll want to snap the losing streak, which sees them among a struggling pack down at the bottom. today, they missed out on what could have been a valuable point against the champions. translation: i think that was the tale in i the first half certainly. we had a lot of the ball, but found it hard to find those spaces behind, because there weren't any. in the second half, we were able to get on the ball more, and make more continuous pressure. i think it was a different story in the second half. i would rather be taking a point. i think you're saying let's put it into perspective. we have lost the point, how crucial it will be at the end of the season, we will wait and see. but what we have not lost is a performance. we can't let that loss of points take away from the good things we have shown today. game on game, we have got stronger. we still compromise in the play, and i understand that, but even with that, we could have come away from this game with a point. aston villa ran out 3—1 winners over burnley, to carry on their rich goalscoring form so far this season. matty cash was the unlikely hero at turf moor, scoring twice as villa put burnley to the sword. club record signing moussa diaby got the third with what was an impressive performance from him. vincent kompany*s men hit back immediately after the break through lyle foster but it wasn't enough as burnley remain without a point. we played against a side with a lot of quality, and in the key moments there, they punished us, they hurt us. i felt at 2—1, it looked like to me like we were is going to come back to 2—2. we created definitely enough chances against a good side, but the difference happens in both boxes, and we played against a good side that showed us what the level is in the premier league. we expected a lot, and we were playing in there trying to control the game like we want. we were trying to also be competitive away, because the first match we played in newcastle, it was a very bad result, a bad match. today, i think we played at home against everton very well. we felt comfortable being competitive, offensively, defensively, trying to play in our style, but overall, i am very happy, because we were focused for 90 minutes. blackburn left it late to get 3 points away to watford in the championship. they won 1—0 at vicarage road. it was ryan hedges who broke the deadlock with just under 20 minutes to go, very much against the run of play. a well worked goal and finish from a tight angle was enough for blackburn rovers to take the points and move up into 9th place. a late equaliser deep into added time secured aberdeen a 2—2 draw with st mirren — who could have gone top if they held on for the win. bojan miovski scored the equaliser from the spot, 10 minutes into injury time. st mirren came from behind to lead too, but the draw sees them level on points with celtic who are top, but behind on goal difference. the other match today saw dundee beat hearts by a goal to nil. rangers and glasgow city played out a 1—1 draw in the swpl this evening. a wonderful solo effort from mia mcaulay after a lovely rangers counter attack put them ahead shortly after half time. but that lead didn't last long, with brenna lovera equalising just some minutes later. the top of the swpl remains very tight after the draw. celtic are the pacesetters early in the season. they won their opening match 9—0. and today, they won by the same scoreline against dundee united women. a perfect start to the season for them. a big win for partick thistle too against montrose. 5—0 there, as they look to keep up with the leaders. it's all going very well for harry kane at his new club bayern munich. he scored twice as they beat augsburg 3—1 in the bundesliga at the allianz arena. the england captain scored on his league debut in a 4—0 win at werder bremen, and made it 2 in 2 games from the penalty spot tonight. despite not having many touches in the match, he was typically in the right place at the right time to claim his second and bayern*s third. southern brave won the women's hundred by outclassing northern superchargers in the final at lord's. brave lost to 0val invincibles in the previous two finals but this time, made no mistake, beating superchargers by 3a runs. the victory providing a fitting send off for their retiring captain. jess softley was watching for us. southern brave were runners up in the last two finals, and they didn't have the best start to this one. and fellow open maja blucher fell shortly after, as the northern superchargers made the perfect start. but the partnership of danny wyatt and george adams led the recovery for the brave, as they looked to finally win the title. now, keep your eye on the ball. fix, now, keep your eye on the ball. a bit of unlucky fortune for wyatt. a bit of unlucky fortune for wyatt. hu-e bit of unlucky fortune for wyatt. huge wicket for the bit of unlucky fortune for wyatt.- huge wicket for the superchargers come up with wyatt providing the majority of the runs. adams was dropped by georgia wareham earlier, but this time, she made no mistakes. the brave, 105 forfall, with still plenty left to do. up stepped 18—year—old away a camper, showing her class to set the superchargers a target of 1110. a successful review on the first delivery give to marie kelly in the field, only for lauren bell to dismiss her with the next ball. the superchargers had glimmers of hope, but theyjust didn't have enough to cope with an unstoppable bowling display from the brave. a fairy tale finish from captain rob sol, who retired from cricket in style. arguably the team of the tournament, at the third time of asking, southern brave are finally the hundred champions. a huge win for them. in the men's final, the 0val invincibles didn't have the best start against the manchester 0riginals, losing early wickets with jason roy gone for a duck. jimmy neesham and tom curran have lead the fightback, with curran reaching a half century in style to set the 0riginals a target of 162. they're currently 19 without loss in their innings. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today. an internal investigation has been launched by spain's football federation, after its sexual violence protocol was activated. federation president luis rubiales has been suspended by fifa after kissing forward jenni hermoso on the lips after spain's women's world cup win. danish rider andreas kron won stage two of the vuelta a espana, breaking clear late on the climb up monjuic in barcelona. geraint thomas finished alongside the main contenders. after england's shock defeat to fiji it was the final match for france and australia ahead of the rugby world cup, with france running in four tries in a convincing 41—17 win. todd clements secured a maiden dp world tour title after holding off a host of ryder cup hopefuls to claim a dramatic one—shot victory at the czech masters. clements charging into contention with six birdies in his opening eight holes. it's been a day to remember for max verstappen — notjust for today's win at his home dutch grand prix. but the torrential rain that caused mayhem at the zandvoort circuit earlier won't dampen his equalling of sebastian vettel*s record of nine race wins in a row. the world champion is now 138 points clear in the standings, and seemingly uncatchable. joe lynskey reports. one man in formula 1 has victory on repeat. this is max verstappen*s ninth win in a row. that equals the sport's record. this time, at home at the dutch grand prix, he had to go through all conditions. they had raised or just a lap when the first downpour came. that built caution on the track and chaos in the pits. the lead changed hands, but max verstappen found a way to the front. some had less luck through the puddles. with this, luke sargent had to sit it out. the rest would brace for another storm. this time, the rain took even more off the track, and a red flag stopped the race. the dutch crowd kept moving, and soon, their start was out in front on the restart, out in front on the flag. the nine race record has stood for a decade. next week in italy, max verstappen goes for history. the final major of the tennis season gets underway on monday, as the us open begins in new york. andy murray gets his tournament underway on tuesday. but iga swiatek is taking nothing for granted as she prepares to defend her title. the world no.1 enters the tournament coming off a loss in the cincinnati 0pen semi—final to coco gauff, but also having defended her french open title and a career—best performance at wimbledon. she says she learned a great deal on her way to victory last year, and will apply that knowledge to her approach this time around. i try to take everything step—by—step, and not really go forward with my thoughts, and think, you know, that i need to do something more, because last year, i won. so, remembering that this is a totally different chapter always helped. but i also want to kind ofjust take a lesson from last year. i learnt a lot during the us open, and this was probably the most important tournament, in terms of me believing in myself. and that is iga swiatek there. british heavyweight daniel dubois says he wants justice, over the loss to ukraine's 0leksandr usyk in poland. dubois floored the champion in the 5th round, but the effort was deemed a low blow. he eventually lost in the 9th — and also said he felted cheated out of becoming world champion. ade adedoyin has more from wroclaw. this was a huge occasion for ukrainians, an opportunity to see a national hero in action so close to home. there was even a message from president zelensky before the opening bell. credit to daniel dubois, who wasn't overawed by the occasion, but it was acoustically took control early in the fight and seem to be cruising towards a comfortable victory. then came the moment of controversy in the fifth round. music was down, the referee ruled that a low blow, and gave him plenty of time to recover. when he did get up, he looked visibly upset, and there was a change in tempo of the fight. he applies a lot of pressure on daniel dubois, who eventually went down in the eighth round. image the count but then went out again in the ninth round. this time, the referee waiting it. this time, the referee waiting it. this time, you stick to the brink of victory the crowd came to see, but daniel dubois felt he was robbed of what should have been a certain victory in the round. i what should have been a certain victory in the round.— what should have been a certain victory in the round. i was thinking what is going _ victory in the round. i was thinking what is going on — victory in the round. i was thinking what is going on there, _ victory in the round. i was thinking what is going on there, this - victory in the round. i was thinking what is going on there, this is - victory in the round. i was thinking what is going on there, this is a i what is going on there, this is a blatant shot? i told the referee, and he didn't even say it was low. he couldn't move. he wasn't going to make it in time. he was out. that should have been a knockout, and i think this needs to go further and be pushed. this wrong is to be corrected, because i should be world champion right now. they plan to appeal the decision. as put you sick, he says his next target is a unification bout against tyson fury. it's the final day of the world athletics championships in budapest, with great britain hoping to finish on a high. let's cross live now to the coverage from budapest on bbc one, to see how they get on. if she gets to the front and tries to control this, it'll be an interesting challenge for keely hodgkinson. she has gone on the shoulder of keely hodgkinson, and for me, you can't lead to slow too much. keep the pressure and the pace on, and i think mo will trust us. what chelsea runs wide in the lane as well. she runs wide enough so that she makes others do the work, and now, moraa coming up, and jemma reekie and a good spot. keely hodgkinson just tucked reekie and a good spot. keely hodgkinsonjust tucked in reekie and a good spot. keely hodgkinson just tucked in for. just hodgkinson 'ust tucked in for. just trackina hodgkinson just tucked in for. just tracking her. this has change it up a little _ tracking her. this has change it up a little bit — tracking her. this has change it up a little bit for her, perhaps not as quick— a little bit for her, perhaps not as quick as _ a little bit for her, perhaps not as quick as you — a little bit for her, perhaps not as quick as you would like, pittsburgh enough _ quick as you would like, pittsburgh enough to— quick as you would like, pittsburgh enough to make her hurt from here. mary moraa is incredibly strong in the home straight and keely is giving them a head start here, she has to treat hers —— trust herself, butjemma reekie in a good spot, third and fourth at the moment, jemma reekie and keely hodgkinson, mu has stretched them hard. 25 or 26 is quick. athing mu leading it, mary moraa, jemma reekie and keely hodgkinson, the two british athletes, keely looking pretty relaxed, had she anything in her legs? moraa always so strong in the home straight and the american is running even wider than normal and moraa is ready to attack. athing mu has got a little extra, moraa is there, keely hodgkinson looking for there, keely hodgkinson looking for the inside track, but mary moraa is rarely beaten on the home straight and it is not going to happen, mary moraa is going to take the gold for kenya, keely hodgkinson takes the silver again and athing mu —— mary moraa did a jig of delight as she crossed the line, athing mu did all the hard work for her, a little surprised at those tactics. i do keely could not get to the front and i think that is what she will say, it was hard, 1.56 flat. paula, you and i come again, we said that she needs to run 1.55 to win theirs, thatis needs to run 1.55 to win theirs, that is what you need. —— you and i coming into this. but let's not take anything away from moraa, when she what a race and what a performance. mary margaret winning that final. keely— mary margaret winning that final. keely hodgkinson so close for britain there, coming so close in budapest. the performance by team gb over at the budapest championships. it is the final day, and you can get all of that on the bbc sport website. and just to finish, we'll go back to football. and chelsea's season might seem back on track after victory over luton on friday night. but it wasn't the most convincing from their opening two matches. earlier this week, the football news show took a look at what the mood was like at stamford bridge, with close to a billion pounds spent on new signings and high hopes for the season ahead. hello, this is the football news show, and i am ben croucher. you are very welcome to join us. we have our football reporter alex howe with us. today, it is all about chelsea. they say money can't buy you happiness, but can it buy success ? the evidence of last season where they finished 12th is not, and the evidence from the season is unconvincing, albeit from a small sample size. we will touch upon the spending in a bit, but alex, new season, same old chelsea? it seems that way with the points return they have had, doesn't it? but i do feel for pochettino, the way they have started the season, where they don't have the points on the board, but you can see the pattern of play. i was with chelsea in the summer of their pre—season tour, and while we were there, we actually got to see them on the training pitch, and for about an hour, which is quite unusual to see a manager getting his ideas across. and you can really see that transfer from the training pitch into the game. yes, we can bring in the former chelsea winger pat nevin as well. good to see you. what have you noticed? it is not looking like the finished product yet, and i think most chelsea fans would accept that, and you mention are to finished 12 last season, which is unacceptable for what has happened in recent decades for chelsea. on top of that, there is no european football, notjust on the champions league, not any european football whatsoever, which is astonishing. so, it is almost a year go on, starting from something completely different. and it is difficult to know what will happen. chelsea, for me, could end up fourth or 15th this season. i still cannot tell you. alex has already touched upon the influence pochettino has had in pre—season. do you think that the board will give him a lot more backing, and maybe even a lot more time, given the scale of the overhaul, compared to his predecessor? i'm one of those people who thinks it is important to give the manager a good amount of time to turn things around, especially if it is a gigantic project, which, changing chelsea to what it was before the sanctions, back to around this year, it is a completely different project. to change that in the time that gail porter was given, he wasn't given enough time. if they do the same again with pochettino, if the fans turn on the manager and it doesn't go well, which it might not go well, because there are so many young players there. for a period of time, while they grow. then, you just keep on changing managers. and that is not the problem. the problem is getting in players that can gel together over a period of time. they should stick with him. he is a good manager, a good technical manager, and he likes working with young players, and even if it is another difficult mid—table season for chelsea, season for chelsea, i personally hope that they stick with the manager at this time. so, let's tackle the question that everybody is asking. just how can chelsea afford it and not break spending rules? before the signing of petrovic, chelsea had spent £4419 million, dwarfing the rest of the league. but in selling the likes of mason mount and mateo kovacic, it means their net spend isjust over £100 million. that is on par with bournemouth. in the last three transfer windows, they have spent, get this, nearly £1 billion, just on players. how are they doing it? and maybe more importantly, is it sustainable? let's bring in doctor tom mason from coventry university. tom, are chelsea close to breaking financial fair play rules then? chelsea have consistently said that they are going to be within uefa's and the premier league's financial fair play rules. going forward, i think it'll be very difficult for them to stay within it. most seem to think that by the end of the 2022, 2020 pre—season, they will be there or thereabouts. they might break it or they might not. but then, projecting forwards, uefa is reporting at the end of 2023, 2024, it is looking like it will be very difficult for _ them to stay within those uefa regulations. assuming, of course, that chelsea do get back into uefa competition, which they are not the season. so if, in the short term, players are signing long contracts, and that is initially helping their balance sheets, where do the potential difficulties lie in the long term for chelsea? so, like you say, the longer term contracts are helping them in the short term. so for example, caicedo signed for £115 million. over five years, that would work out at £23 million per season. because he signed an eight—year contract, that works out about £14 million per season. that certainly helps them immediately, because they have less of a transfer fee expense each year. what it does mean is that it is longer, that they need to pay that over 80 years. it also means that if there is a player that doesn't quite work out, their value on the books is going to stay relatively high, so let's say that modric doesn't work out, for example, if he had signed a four—year contract, then he would be advertised at 20 million per season. and so, his value on the books will be reducing by 20 million per season. because he signed an eight—year contract, the amount of advertising each year is relatively small. and that makes it quite difficult then for chelsea to perhaps sell him at a profit. if their revenues continue to fall, don't stay as high as they have been previously, then they are going to find it quite difficult to cover those costs that they have locked in for a long period of time. well, that was tom mason there, and you can indeed catch the full show right now on the bbc iplayer, and tune in on friday at 10pm for the football news show live on transfer deadline day. we do hope to see you then. goodbye. that was ben crutcher. just to recap, it's the closing evening of the world athletics championships in budapest and in the last few minutes britain's keeley hodgkinson has won silver in the final of the 800 metres. hodgkinson is the fastest women over the distance this year and was bidding to improve up on her silver medals at last year's world championships and the tokyo 0lympics but finished just behind mary moraa of kenya. the american athing mu won bronze. britain's jemma reekie was fifth. hodgkinson coming second there. you can get all the latest on the website, but that is it for as from now. we will see you again next time. goodbye. hello there. part two of the weekend is looking pretty similar to how it was yesterday — sunshine and showers, but i don't think the showers will be quite as heavy, or certainly not quite as widespread as what we had yesterday. but again, eastern parts of the uk will see some of the heaviest of the thunderstorms and showers today, whereas further west we've got this weather front bringing light and patchy rain to northern ireland in between some good spells of sunshine. so for the rest of the day, it will stay rather cloudy with outbreaks of rain across northern ireland, skies brightening up from the west later. western scotland, western parts of britain seeing some sunshine. most of the heavy showers will be affecting eastern scotland and eastern parts of england, again, some torrential downpours in a few places. and top temperatures 21—22 celsius here, high teens further north and west. so for the reading and leeds festival today, i think the better chance of staying dry will be across reading. for the leeds festival, i think you could pick up a few showers, which could be on the heavy side. same too for notting hill carnival. i think today, there's a greater risk of seeing showers, than what we'll see tomorrow, i think it could stay largely dry with good sunny spells. now, as we move through this evening, overnight, the showers mostly fade away. that weather front, a weakening feature, spreads across central and eastern england. just a band of patchy cloud on it. and it will be quite a cool night to come again, particularly out of town under those clear skies, single digits likely for many of us. now for monday — and of course, monday is a bank holiday for most of us — it's looking like being a fairly good day, i think, quite a bit of sunshine around. into the afternoon, the shower clouds may bubble up. you could see the odd light shower here and there, but most places should stay dry. and top temperatures, 21 celsius, it's the high teens further north, and winds will be light, as well. as we move out of monday into tuesday, things change again. the low pressure starts to push into the north of the uk. that'll bring stronger winds, blustery showers certainly to scotland, some of these showers could be quite heavy. elsewhere, some good sunny spells, but this weather front will be spreading across england and wales, bringing a band of showers, but it will become confined to southern and eastern areas by the end of the day with quite a bit of sunshine, i think, developing behind it. top temperatures around 22 celsius. cooler than that, though, further north where it will be quite blustery. wednesday, at this stage, not too bad thanks to a ridge of high pressure, but then it turns more unsettled for thursday and friday. could be quite wet in places particularly across england and wales. live from london, this is bbc news... russian investigators say genetic testing confirms wagner leader yevgeny prigozhin was killed in a plane crash on wednesday. president zelensky pays tribute to one of ukraine's most celebrated fighter pilots, who died in a mid—air crash. zimbabwe's election results have been declared, yet both candidates are claiming victory. the metropolitcan police is investigating a suspected data hack involving the details of potentially thousands of officers. authorities in russia have confirmed that the head of the wagner paramilitary group, yevgenny prigozhin, was killed in a plane that crashed north—west of moscow on wednesday. they say that the identities of the bodies recovered correspond with the flight*s passenger list, which named mr prigozhin. the mercenary leader had led an aborted mutiny against the russian military injune amid growing tension with commanders over the war in ukraine. he had since relocated to belarus.

hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm gavin ramjaun. darwin's late winner saves the day forjurgen klopp*s side, against newcastle, in a thrilling comeback. the perfect send off for shrubsole — the southern braves pay tribute to their retiring captain in winning the women's hundred at lord's. and a record—equalling ninth win in a row for max verstappen, after rain causes chaos in the netherlands, on fi's return. welcome to sportsday. what late drama we saw at st james* park, as two goals from darwin nunez helped liverpool beat newcastle 2—1. newcastle had opportunities to kill the game, but were punished by darwin, whose two goals late on gave liverpool a vital away win. all the more sweet, given they were reduced to ten men early on. dan ogunshakin reports. it ended with the response to the travelling support, but for the majority of this match, liverpool looked a little punch drunk. with just four minutes showing on the clock, trent alexander—arnold was shown a yellow card for dissent. and less than 60 seconds later, he wasn't shown a second for a foul on anthony gordon, lucky escape. he didn't make the most of his fortune, this error allowing the former evertonians gordon to open the scoring. a bad day for liverpool soon got even worse. grip free and a red card will stop down to ten, but not out. substituted darwin nunez seized on a newcastle mistake, and out of nowhere, liverpool were level. the message from jurgen klopp was clear, use your heads. mo salah and darwin nunez wisely use their feet. darwin at the hero for those in red, as liverpool's latest evolution underjurgen klopp has a win. a huge win indeed. manchester city are already looking like the team to catch — if anyone can keep up, that is! they battled back to beat to resilient sheffield united side at bramall lane earlier this afternoon, maintaining their winning start to the season, and finishing the day top.
