near the remote melville island, off the coast of darwin, in the northern territory. five marines have been transported to darwin in a serious condition. australian prime minister anthony albanese gave this update, a little earlier. the initial reports suggest that the incident involves just us defence force personnel, that there are no members of the australian defence force involved in this incident. our focus as a government and as a department of defence is very much on incident response and on making sure that every support and assistance is given at this difficult time. live now to sydney, we can speak to phil mercer. what's on this? ! what's the latest? officials have confirmed three us marines have died in this aircraft crash. this took place on the tiwi islands, about 60 kilometres to the north of darwin, the capital city of australia's northern territories. so right at the north in the middle of australia, on melville island, one of the tiwi islands, this vertical take—off aircraft has crashed. this is an osprey, one of two us vertical take—off aircraft that have been involved in military drills between australian forces and us military forces in the northern territory. we understand that 22 people were on board. three us marines have been confirmed to have been killed. at least five others have been flown to the royal darwin hospital, that is the royal darwin hospital, that is the biggest hospital in the city of darwin, which has initiated its highest emergency response after this aircraft crash here in australia earlier today. find this aircraft crash here in australia earlier today. and the eo - le australia earlier today. and the peeple that _ australia earlier today. and the people that have _ australia earlier today. and the people that have been - australia earlier today. and the people that have been injured l australia earlier today. and the - people that have been injured have been flown to hospital in darwin? yes, and we understand that at least one is undergoing surgery and hospital officials are saying they do expect more patients to arrive. what we have seen is this aircraft came down on melville island, as i say, about 60 kilometres to the north of the australian mainland in the northern territory. initially there were a great deal of other army aircraft and military personnel rushing to the scene. some of those injured have been treated on melville island that we do expect more to be transferred to that hospital in darwin. now, all of these troops and military personnel were taking part in broad military exercises involving the us, australia, east timor and also indonesia as well, and we did here before from the australian prime minister anthony albanese saying that this was a regrettable incident and the australian government is expected to make a further update, or give a further update, on this accident in the next few hours. phil, thank you for that update, phil, thank you for that update, phil mercer, our correspondent in sydney. here in the uk, nadine dorries, the conservative mp and former minister, has resigned as a member of parliament with a scathing attack on prime minister rishi sunak. ms dorries had said she would resign injune — after claiming that downing street had blocked her receiving a peerage, something which number ten denied. but she had remained as an mp, saying she was continuing to work for her constituents — despite coming under pressure from other mps to go through with her promise to leave the house of commons. she has also released a resignation statement saying that rishi sunak has demeaned his office by whipping up a public frenzy against her. and she also accuses mr sunak of running a zombie parliament with a government which is adrift. she also claims he has squandered the good will of the nation. here's our political correpondent iain watson with more. last year she was a cabinet minister, but now nadine dorries has said she'll be leaving parliament for good. if you think you've heard that before, well, she initially announced she'd go back injune, but then decided to stay on to try to find out why she'd apparently been blocked from taking a seat in the house of lords. she is no stranger to controversy. she upset many in her own party a little over a decade ago when she got out of westminster during parliamentary time and went down under to take part in this reality tv show. but now she is finally leaving the politicaljungle and taking a swing at the current prime minister. in her resignation letter to rishi sunak, she tells him: she warmed to her theme in a mail on sunday interview. rishi sunak became prime minister without a single members' vote or a vote from the public. no—one has voted for him to be in thatjob — nobody. and he immediately abandoned the manifesto that the british people in 2019 went out and voted for. they went out and they voted for borisjohnson, and they voted for a manifesto. both have gone. three short years, both have gone. nadine dorries was a close ally of the former prime minister borisjohnson, and she has denounced mps who ousted him as stupid, so her criticism of the current prime minister is not exactly a surprise. pressure from some of her colleagues at westminster and in mid—bedfordshire to quit have been increasing, and earlier this week some of her constituents told the bbc they also wanted her to go. she's been absent for so many years, and perhaps she should go. well, i'm totally disappointed, and she should have _ resigned and left. she denies letting her voters down. opposition parties haven't waited for her formal resignation to start preparing for a by—election. she said she was going to resign two months ago and i think she has failed yet again the people of mid bedfordshire, as have the conservative party for allowing her to stay in place without any discipline. i think it's a real relief for the people of mid bedfordshire because they desperately need an mp who will be focused on them full—time. the conservatives, too, have a candidate ready to go, and you do get the impression that nadine dorries sees some in her own party as her true opponents. iain watson, bbc news. our political corresepondent helen catt said that the letter attacking the prime minister didn't come as much of a shock. it's always a problem when you've got a formerly senior member of your party attacking you in public. it looks like you have a divided party. and certainly that's something the leader of the liberal democrats this morning has been seizing on in his broadcast interviews, he has been talking about it showing division within the party. quite how representative she is of the party as a whole, i think is debatable. as i said, she was very closely tied to borisjohnson, the former prime minister, and those who supported him within the party. so i think to that extent, she reflects some of the anger that came off the back of him stepping down as prime minister, two prime ministers ago now. so there is that, but is it an indication of broader discontent within the party? i think we should be a bit wary of seeing it as that so much. i mean, certainly it seemed before they all broke up for the summer recess that mps had started to be starting to pull behind rishi sunak and that will be increasingly important for the government as it goes into the run—up up to the next general election, which we are expecting to happen at some point next year. our political correspondent helen catt. zimbabwe's president, emmerson mnangagwa, has been re—elected to serve a second term with just over half of the total vote. the opposition claims there has been widespread vote—rigging, and international observers say the vote has fallen short of democratic standards. well, mr mnangagwa, known as "the crocodile" — which referes to his ruthless nature — has been speaking in the past hour. he said he is humbled by the confidence that zimbabweans have shown him. in an address on sunday morning, president mnagwagwa described the country's election as fair and peaceful. our correspondent shingai nyoka is in harare and has more on the election result. so these election results were announced, they were announced last night. president emmerson mnangagwa won close to 53% of the votes. his main rival, the citizen coalition for change opposition leader nelson chamisa, got 44% of the votes. but he immediately rejected those results. they said that they... ..that the results were hastily put together, that they weren't validated by them. and so yesterday, when everybody was waiting for the election results, the opposition party had said it wouldn't validate those elections and now we're just waiting now to hear what their step is. the options are very difficult for the opposition. they might go to the courts. they have seven days within which to lodge an appeal at the constitutional court. but this echoes what happened in 2018, with the same two candidates, mr mnangagwa and mr chamisa, who entered the court to try to overturn the results and the constitutional court upheld mr mnangagwa's victory. and so they really don't have confidence in the court system but they said they're going to announce their next step very soon. joining me now from harare is hopewell chin'ono. he is an award winning journalist and documentary film maker. thank you forjoining us. as our correspondent pointed out there, it wasn't a huge surprise that mnangagwa won this election. however, since then, all of these allegations of vote rigging. it must leave the general public little bit adrift in terms of what they make of the result? . * , _, . the result? that's correct. it wasn't a _ the result? that's correct. it wasn't a surprise _ the result? that's correct. it wasn't a surprise that - the result? that's correct. it. wasn't a surprise that president mnangagwa's party and administration would rig the election. it wasn't a surprise that the way they rigged the election was so brazen, because they have done that in the past. you had a situation where in areas which remain mainly opposition strongholds, they didn't have a lecture material, that is ballot papers, for over 12 hours, and this is a form of rigging, voter suppression. —— they didn't have election material, that ballot papers. voters didn't have election material and they went home without voting. you had a situation in rural areas which are stronghold of the ruling zanu—pf, strongholds in the sense they are able to manipulate the electric they're using food hand—outs and fear and intimidation, —— the electorate there, you had an outfit called faz which is working with secret service agents to intimidate people. they set out a plan to put desks next to polling stations and take down the names of rural folk going stations and take down the names of ruralfolk going in stations and take down the names of rural folk going in to vote and take their id numbers and tell them, we will know who you voted for because we have taken down your details. so that was another form of rigging that was another form of rigging that was another form of rigging that was taking place. and then you had a situation where prior to the election date itself, the opposition was not allowed to hold all of its valleys. they were denied over 100 times. —— they were not allowed to hold all of its first back. each time they were did have a rally, there is a draconian law which says everyone who wants to congregate or assemble what they have to get permission from the police, so in regards to how the election process was run... , ., m ., was run... yes, denies vote rigging but in terms of the economic picture, inflation is very high, at 70%, high levels of poverty. is there anyway perhaps the government is able to perhaps gain favour with the public failure in the last five years has been caused by how his government is put across field policies, and it's now legendary crop through. corruption is rife in zimbabwe. —— it's legendary corrupt rule. most of them but because the workforce is out of work at the moment, it has the highest inflation in the world, zimbabweans don't have clean drinking water coming through the taps in their homes. the biggest hospital in zimbabwe only has one maternity theatre, which was built in 1977. therefore you find that 2500 zimbabwe women die every year giving birth. 75% of women who give birth at the hospital across the border in south africa, in zimbabwe there running away to south africa because they are scared of giving birth whilst in zimbabwe. so the economic picture is really bad. it's a badge to a point where the whole country does not have a single working radiotherapy cancer treatment machine. so it is in their wins have cancer and don't have money, they are not wealthy, they have got a death sentence hanging over their head —— if zimbabweans have cancer. this is because by the inability of many agua's administration to do the right thing. —— mnangagwa's administration. if they wanted to do the right thing they can turn it around. but the problem is the main purpose and main business of this administration has been corruption. 150 million us dollars worth of gold is smuggled out of the country every month, that's enough to run all central hospitals for three years. thank you very much for your analysis, hopewell, on those election results. the head coach of spain's women's football team, jorge vilda, has condemned the behaviour of the country's football federation president, after luis rubiales was suspended by fifa for kissing playerjenni hermoso at the world cup final last week. she's accused mr rubiales of kissing her on the lips without consent after spain's victory last sunday. the federation has threatened her with legal action saying she was *misrepresenting reality*. mr rubiales has faced a wave of condemnation for his actions but has refused to resign. on saturday, 11 members of the national team's coaching staff quit in protest of his behaviour. mr rubiales has been suspended from participation in football by the sport's world governing body, fifa. our reporter sergi is in the newsroom for us. lots to digest. at this stage, who is supporting mr rubiales? i would say, publicly, nobody. iwould say, publicly, nobody. we have heard from the government, from opposition parties, from players with that they are male or female, from technical staff that are resigning, and they're all siding withjenni hermoso, so at least publicly, as of now, nobody in spain is saying that luis rubiales should either stay or somehow saying that his behaviour was ok during the world cup final. and it's his behaviour was ok during the world cup final. and its relevant when you were just mentioning the fact thatjorge vilda, who is at least until now was an ally of mr rubiales, the manager of the spanish women's national team, now, rubiales, the manager of the spanish women's nationalteam, now, even though he is not criticising him a lot, he's kind of saying, well, his behaviour is not, was not appropriate. so simply put, nobody is now supporting mr rubiales. so he is now supporting mr rubiales. so he is quite isolated at the moment. they certainly look rather pali in the photo behind you. do you think this is a #metoo movement for spanish football? what are people saying? spanish football? what are people sa in: ? a , seville players with a hashtag saying, that's it, enough. so many are saying this will definitely be a turning point for spain's football. while obviously all of the attention is on luis rubiales there is also criticism towards the spanish football federation in general, previous managers, previous members of staff, some formerfootball managers, previous members of staff, some former football players are questioning their behaviours. and we saw yesterday in the pictures, a lot of support forjennifer hermoso, she herself was yesterday watching one of the matches in madrid, the atletico de store. the city's sheriff says the suspected shooter was a white male in his 20s who turned the gun on himself. he killed two women and one man — all black — with no other injuries reported. the gunman was carrying a handgun, and an ar—15 style rifle, while wearing a mask and tactical vest. the sheriff says it's believed the shooter acted alone, with no evidence he was part of a wider group. the shooter had authored several manifestos, one to his parents, one to the media, and one to federal agents. portions of these manifestos detail the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate. plainly put, the shooting was racially motivated and he hated black people. london's metropolitan police says it's investigating a potential cyber security breach at one of its suppliers. the force said the long and happy life is "moderation", as he turns 111 years old. he received a birthday card from the king and queen, and gave this advice during his celebrations. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. just a few days left now of meteorological summer and the weather is looking a little bit mixed. we are going to see some late summer sunshine around, but there are also going to be some showers, particularly through the course of today. some of them could be heavy, potentially thundery in the east, but we are expecting a slightly drier and brighter day tomorrow as this area of high pressure in the atlantic starts to topple in. but what we've got today, we've got a front approaching here from the west and low pressure sitting out to the east of the uk. so heading through the day, then, we'll see heavy showers cropping up for parts of northern england through the east midlands, down towards the southeast. these could well be heavy, bringing some rumbles of thunder, lightning and some large hail. but things are looking a little bit drier for parts of central southern england into wales. we've got this frontal system bringing more cloud for the southwest of england, northern ireland and western scotland. patchy rain across this zone. but for the east of scotland, some sunshine and temperatures between about 1a to 22 degrees out there today. we could catch a passing shower at reading and at leeds festivals today, but it shouldn't be raining for long i think. and those showers will tend to ease away into the evening hours. and the chance of one or two heavy showers today at the notting hill carnival, too. but if you're heading to notting hill tomorrow, you've got more chance of staying dry with some sunshine around, too. through the evening hours, the showers in the east fade away. this zone of cloud and patchy rain drifts eastwards, but it's tending to peter out overnight. so some clear spells, some mist and fog patches here and there and temperatures down into mid single figures for one or two more rural spots in the north and the west. so that's how we start monday. monday, a bank holiday for many of us, of course, is looking drier and brighter. so some more sunshine, some areas of cloud and a few showers drifting across parts of england, i think through the morning. could see one or two working in from the northwest later in the day, too, but predominantly a dry day and temperatures between about 17 to 21 degrees. so an improvement for scotland and for northern ireland compared to recent days. looking ahead then into tuesday and we've got low pressure sweeping across the uk, higher pressure tries to move in from the atlantic so that's squeezing away the heaviest of the showers. but we'll see this line of cloud and a few spells of light rain crossing parts of england and wales and then more heavy, blustery showers across the north west of scotland. but certainly some sunshine in between these areas of any showers and temperatures 15 to 22 degrees. it looks like many of us should see a drier day on wednesday, but then the weather looks unsettled for the remainder of the week. a bit up and down, sunshine, heavy showers, temperatures typical for the time of year. bye bye. this is bbc news. the headlines... us officials say three us marines have been killed — and at least 20 injured — after a military aircraft crashed during exercises in australia's northern territory. 23 people were on board. five people have been transferred to darwin for treatment. the mp and former minister nadine dorries has resigned, weeks after promising to do so, with a blistering attack on prime minister rishi sunak. election officials in zimbabwe say incumbent president emmerson emengagwa has been elected for a second term. the country's leading opposition party have rejected the result — claiming there had been widespread vote rigging. the head coach of spain's women's football team, jorge vilda, has condemned the behaviour of the country's football federation president. luis rubiales has been suspended by fifa for kissing the playerjenni hermoso. now on bbc news, this cultural life: tim minchin. applause tim minchin,
