been killed in a military aircraft crash in northern australia. 23 people were on board osprey military craft, which was taking part in exercises near the remote melville island, off the coast of darwin, in the northern territory. five marines have been transported to darwin in a serious condition. australian prime minister anthony albanese gave this update, a little earlier. the initial reports suggest that the incident involves just us defence force personnel, that there are no members of the australian defence force involved in this incident. our focus as a government and as a department of defence is very much on incident response and on making sure that every support and assistance is given at this difficult time. that was the australian prime minister on that military crashed, killing three us marines. we'll have more on this story as we get it. here in the uk, nadine dorries, the conservative mp and former minister, has resigned as a member of parliament with a scathing attack on prime minister rishi sunak. ms dorries said she would resign injune after claiming that downing street had blocked her receiving a peerage, something which number 10 has denied. but she had remained as an mp, saying she was continuing to work for her constituents, despite coming under pressure from other mps to go through with her promise to leave the house of commons. she has also released a resignation statement saying that rishi sunak has demeaned his office by whipping up a public frenzy against her. and she also accuses mr sunak of running a zombie parliament with a government which is adrift. she also claims he has squandered the good will of the nation. here's our political correpondent iain watson. last year she was a cabinet minister, but now nadine dorries has said she'll be leaving parliament for good. if you think you've heard that before, well, she initially announced she'd go back injune, but then decided to stay on to try to find out why she'd apparently been blocked from taking a seat in the house of lords. she is no stranger to controversy. she upset many in her own party a little over a decade ago when she got out of westminster during parliamentary time and went down under to take part in this reality tv show. but now she is finally leaving the politicaljungle and taking a swing at the current prime minister. in her resignation letter to rishi sunak, she tells him: she warmed to her theme in a mail on sunday interview. rishi sunak became prime minister without a single members* vote without a single member's vote or a vote from the public. no—one has voted for him to be in thatjob — nobody. and he immediately abandoned the manifesto that the british people in 2019 went out and voted for. they went out and they voted for borisjohnson, and they voted for a manifesto. both have gone. three short years, both have gone. nadine dorries was a close ally of the former prime minister borisjohnson, and she has denounced mps who ousted him as stupid, so her criticism of the current prime minister is not exactly a surprise. pressure from some of her colleagues at westminster and in mid—bedfordshire to quit have been increasing, and earlier this week some of her constituents told the bbc they also wanted her to go. she's been absent for so many years, and perhaps she should go. but i'm totally disappointed, and she should have - resigned and left. she denies letting her voters down. opposition parties haven't waited for her formal resignation to start preparing for a by—election. she said she was going to resign two months ago and she has failed yet again the people of mid bedfordshire, as have the conservative party for allowing her to stay in place without any discipline. i think it's a real relief for the people of mid bedfordshire because they desperately need an mp who will be focused on them full—time. the conservatives, too, have a candidate ready to go, and you do get the impression that nadine dorries sees some in her own party as her true opponents. iain watson, bbc news. zimbabwe's president, emmerson mnangagwa, has been re—elected to serve a second term with just over half of the total vote. the opposition claims there has been widespread vote—rigging, and international observers say the vote has fallen short of democratic standards. but this was the announcement from zimbabwe's election commission. 2,350,711 votes out of 4,468,730 valid votes cast, which are more than half the number of valid votes cast in the presidential election. therefore mnangagwa, emmerson dambudzo of zanu—pf party is declared duly elected president of the republic of zimbabwe. well mr mnangagwa, known as "the crocodile" — which referes to his ruthless nature — faces many challenges. zimbabwe still faces high inflation, currently running at an annual rate of over 70%, as well as poverty. the electoral commission say his main challenger, nelson chamisa, secured 44% of the vote. live now to harare and our correspondent shingai nyoka. how are people feeling after this election. — how are people feeling after this election, particularly with these allegations of vote rigging? it*s a allegations of vote rigging? it's a sunday morning _ allegations of vote rigging? it's a sunday morning here _ allegations of vote rigging? it's a sunday morning here in - allegations of vote rigging? it*s —. sunday morning here in harare and people arejust going sunday morning here in harare and people are just going about their business, it's very quiet here in the central business district. there is almost a sense of resignation after those election results were announced. i don't believe many people thought that nelson chamisa would stand a chance against emmerson mnangagwa, given their highly uneven playing field, even before the elections their opposition had expressed concerns about the fact there rallies were banned disproportionately to the ruling party rallies, that there was intimidation of voters, that they didn't have access to the voter pull rope' rule and were not able to audit it. so there are a lot of concerns in the run up to this election. in the electoral commission today said it was ready to conduct credible elections but ballot papers were not ready in harare and other provinces, in harare and other provinces, in harare is an opposition stronghold, so voting had to be extended to a second day. and after the polling was held, election monitors, independent election monitors, were arrested while they were trying to do their own account to independently verify the official tally. and so this has really put a dent on these elections, and i don't think for a minute that many people here thought that emmerson mnangagwa would lose these elections.— would lose these elections. shingai, civen the would lose these elections. shingai, given the state _ would lose these elections. shingai, given the state of— would lose these elections. shingai, given the state of the _ would lose these elections. shingai, given the state of the economy, - given the state of the economy, inflation is a global problem at the moment but 70% is particularly high and given how much the opposition was managing to hold in terms of votes, is there pressure on the government to take bold action to try and resolve some of the challenges it faces?- try and resolve some of the challenges it faces? try and resolve some of the challenaes it faces? ~ ., , challenges it faces? well, there was some pressure _ challenges it faces? well, there was some pressure and _ challenges it faces? well, there was some pressure and that _ challenges it faces? well, there was some pressure and that pressure . some pressure and that pressure happened way before these elections one president mnangagwa came into power, he promised he would re—engage with the international community, especially western countries who had isolated him, his predecessor robert mugabe, under whom information was about 500,000,000,000% at some point, —— inflation, he was isolated from the international community. so the financiers of international financiers of international financiers who are looking at zimbabwe's debt arrears had said free end credible elections were one of the conditions to reconsider zimbabwe's debt arrears and look favourably on it —— set free and credible elections as a condition. but this looking so flawed puts that in jeopardy. but this looking so flawed puts that injeopardy. president mnangagwa had also applied to be readmitted into the commonwealth but the commonwealth report was also quite scathing. i'm so zimbabwe's economy is injeopardy scathing. i'm so zimbabwe's economy is in jeopardy as a result of the conduct of these elections. —— and so zimbabwe's economy is in jeopardy. thank you. shingai nyoka for us in harare reporting on those elections in zimbabwe. we can go back to our story on nadine dorries resigning, we can go back to our newsroom, she has resigned with a scathing attack on rishi sunak, our political correspondent helen catt is in there is room for us. it's quite unsurprising she has been so critical unsurprising in a sense, in that we knew these are the views that nadine dorries held, she was a very close ally of the former prime minister borisjohnson, and her reason for not standing down until now has been that she wanted to find out more about why she hadn't got a peerage, that she had been perhaps promised by borisjohnson, and it has been pretty clear over the summer that she laid the blame for that at rishi sunak*s door. i think what's surprising about her letter quite how personal it is and she also accuses him of having been behind whipping up what she sees as a friendly against her over the summer. so it's quite strong language. summer. so it's quite strong language-— summer. so it's quite strong lanaauae. ., , , ., ,, language. how representative is she of arts of that's something the leader of the liberal democrats this morning has been seizing on in his broadcast interviews, he has been talking about it showing division within the party. quite how representative she is of the party as a whole, i think is debatable. as i said, she was very closely tied to borisjohnson, the former prime minister, and those who supported him within the party. so i think to that extent, she reflects some of the anger that came off the back of him stepping down as prime minister. two prime minister is ago now. so there is an indication of broader discontent within the party, i think we should be wary of seeing it as that as such. it seemed before the recess that mps had started to be pulling behind rishi sunak and that will be increasingly important for the government as it goes into the run—up up of the next general election, which we are expecting to happen at some point next year. so her resignation does leave a gap, doesn't it, in terms of actually, the letter to the prime minister isn't part of a formal process of an mp resigning, that was just the way for nadine dorries to put those views out there. the formal process is that she has written to the chancellor. she can't just resign as an mp, you have to instead there is the sort of archaic mechanism instead where you to be appointed to a job that would discount you, that's known as being the steward of the chiltern hundreds, so she has written to the chancellor and asked for that, the chancellor and asked for that, the chancellor will need to prove that for her to then formally resign. and after that the parliament, they will have to be arit introduced to parliament which gets public to agree to hold a by—election to replace her. allah not due back from the summer recess until a week tomorrow —— parliament is not due back from the summer recess. the timing of the by—election will be within the government's control, usually a writ is moved within parliament head coach of spain's women's football team, jorge vilda, has condemned the behaviour of the country's football federation president, after luis rubiales was suspended by fifa for kissing player jenni hermoso at the world cup final last week. she's accused mr rubiales of kissing her on the lips without consent after spain's victory last sunday. the federation has threatened her with legal action, saying she was *misrepresenting reality*. mr rubiales has faced a wave of condemnation for his actions but has refused to resign. on saturday 11 members of the national team*s coaching staff quit in protest of his behaviour. mr rubiales has been suspended from participation in football by the sport*s world governing body, fifa. our correspondent zoe conway reports. luis rubiales is looking increasingly isolated. his kiss ofjenni hermoso has led to his suspension by fifa, and now the team*s coach, jorge vilda, has condemned his behaviour, saying in a statement: only on friday, vilda was in the audience applauding as luis rubiales told an emergency meeting of the country*s football federation that he would not resign. no voy a dimitir. no voy a dimitir, no voy a dimitir. he continues to insist the kiss was consensual and has vowed to defend himself until the truth prevails. but within the game, pressure is mounting. growing numbers of players and managers are taking the side ofjenni hermoso, who says she did not consent to the kiss. the cadiz team carried a banner onto the pitch saying, "we arejenni". the seville team had written on their t—shirts "#seacabo". it means "it*s over". in other words, they want him to go. it*s so unfair that one of the highest moments in spanish sport, not only women*s sport but spanish sport, the second world cup that we won, has been stolen because of this behaviour. this is unacceptable, and i think this is not spain. the speed with which the sweetness of victory has turned sour is breathtaking. right now spain does not even have a women*s team because they*re refusing to play. the team*s coaches are on strike too, and the spanish government is so fearful the chaos willjeopardise its bid to host the 2030 world cup... ..that the sports minister, victor francos, has told reporters he has contacted fifa to plead that spain*s bid must not be affected. in america, players in the national women*s soccer league are wearing wristbands saying, "with you, jenni". this dispute is now about so much more than the future of spanish football. it is about the role of women in the global game. zoe conway, bbc news. three people are dead in the us state of florida in what authorities are calling a racially motivated mass shooting. the attack took place in the city of jacksonville at a dollar general store. the city*s sheriff says the suspected shooter was a white male in his 20s who turned the gun on himself. he killed two women and one man — all black — with no other injuries reported. the gunman was carrying a handgun, and an ar—15 style rifle, while wearing a mask and tactical vest. the sheriff says it*s believed the shooter acted alone, with no evidence he was part of a wider group. the shooter had authored several manifestos, one to his parents, one to the media, and one to federal agents. portions of these manifestos detail the shooter*s disgusting ideology of hate. plainly put, the shooting was racially motivated and he hated black people. this is a dark day in jacksonville*s history. any loss of life is tragic but the hate that motivated the shooter*s killing spree adds an additional layer of heartbreak. there is no place for hate in our community and this is not jacksonville. that was the sheriff of jacksonville. stewart moore, a journalist the wesh tv station in orlando, florida told us more about what we know about the identity of the gunman. the person responsible was in his 20s. he travelled about 30 to a0 miles north from where he lived to carry out the shooting, and as was mentioned by the sheriff, he killed three people, three black people. and this was racially motivated, leaving a message telling his parents right before the shootings happened. his parents actually alerted law enforcement, but at that point, it was simply too late. we*ve also heard a response from the governor at this hour, saying there is no place for that type of hate in this state. but a lot of critics are coming down on him, saying some of his prior policies are fuelling this type of hatred that*s happening in the state. we also know the shooter has been baker acted before, which in the us, that means someone who*s gone through a mental illness and someone has called to have him taken to a mental health facility. but at this point, we do not think the shooter illegally owned the guns. he was legally in his right to own those guns. let*s return to that breaking news, us officials say three marines have been killed in a military aircraft crash in northern australia. our reporter ellyn duncan is in the newsroom with more details. ellyn, what do we know at this stage? this is a developing story but i can take you through some of what we do know so far. us officials of those at the time she was speaking, one of those was in theatre b being operated on and three others were being treated but she did say we expect to see two others coming to that hospital. a local outlet is also reporting that royal darwin hospital is at a code brown, in australian terms that*s the highest level of emergency response for a hospital. police say the crash took place at 9am around melville island, which is an island off the coast of northern territory in australia. around 60 kilometres north of darwin. it was taking part in an exercise hold exercise predators run 2023, the largest australian army led exercise that*s been held in the northern territory this year. we know that a total of these exercises, around 2500 military members taking part, from countries including of course the us and australia but also philippines, east timor and indonesia. we did australia but also philippines, east timorand indonesia. we did hear from the australian prime minister anthony albanese a little earlier, he is expected to make more updates across the day. he said the focus at this time was to provide support and assistance in whatever was needed for the us in this case but did also confirmed there were no australians involved in this crash, so to recap, we know at the moment there have been three people, three marines killed in this eric roth crash, five have edinburgh fringe festival. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. just a few days left of meteorological summer and the weather looking a bit mixed. we are going to see some late summer sunshine but some showers, particularly through the course of today. some of them could be heavy, potentially thundery in the east but we are expecting a slightly drier and brighter day tomorrow as this area of high pressure in the atlantic starts to topple in. today we have got a front approaching from the west and low pressure setting to the west and low pressure setting to the east of the uk, so heading through the day, heavy showers cropping up for parts of northern england, through the east midlands, down towards the south—east. these could be heavy, bringing some bundles of thunder, lightning, some hail. but things looking a bit drier for parts of central and southern england into wales. a frontal system bringing cloud for the south—west of england, northern ireland and western scotland, patchy cloud across this zone but for eastern scotland some sunshine, and temperatures between 1a and 22 out there today. we could catch a passing shower at reading and leeds festival today but shouldn*t be raining for a long, i think, and showers will tend to ease in the evening hours. a chance of one or two heavy showers today at the notting hill carnival but if you*re heading tomorrow you have got more chance of staying dry with some sunshine around. through the evening hours, showers and the east fade away. this zone of cloud and patchy rain drifts eastwards but peters out overnight, misty spells and for patches here and there, temperatures down into mid single figures for one or two rural spots in the north and west. that*s how we start monday. a bank holiday for many of us, of course, monday is looking drier and brighter. some sunshine, areas of cloud and a few showers drifting across parts of england in the morning, could see one or two working in from the north west later in the day but predominantly a dry day and temperatures between around 17 and 21 so an improvement for scotland and northern ireland compared to recent days. looking ahead to tuesday we have got low pressure sweeping across the uk. higher pressure tries to sweep in from the atlantic so it*s squeezing away the heaviest of the showers but we will see the lines of cloud and if you spell like rain crossing england and england and wales and more heady, blustery showers crossing scotland, but certainly sunshine in between the showers and temperatures 15 to 22. it looks like many of us should see a drier day on wednesday but it looks unsettled for the remainder of the week, a bit up and down, sunshine, heavy showers, temperatures typical for the time of year. this is bbc news. the headlines: us officials say three us marines have been killed — and at least 20 injured — after a military aircraft crashed during exercises in australia*s northern territory. 23 people were on board. five people have been transferred to darwin for treatment. the mp and former minister nadine dorries has resigned, weeks after promising to do so, with a blistering attack on prime minister rishi sunak. election officials in zimbabwe say incumbent president emmerson mnangagwa has been elected for a second term. the country*s leading opposition party have rejected the result — claiming there had been widespread vote rigging. the head coach of spain*s women*s football team, jorge vilda, has condemned the behaviour of the country*s football federation president. luis rubiales has
