sanctions on russian oil sprung a leak? is the best cinch to find the uk has indirectly consumed more than 2 million barrels containing russian crude oil this year. women's football team — world cup winners after defeating england. but it ends with uproar over this moment, when the president of the football federation, luis rubiales, kissed a member of the team, jenni hermoso, on the lips, an image that's caused outrage in spain and elsewhere. he was also seen to be grabbing his crotch as he celebrated at the final whistle. mr rubiales has defiantly refused to resign, saying he is a victim of social assassination. now scores of players say they will not play for the national team until he is removed — and the government is looking to have him suspended. guy hedgecoe reports from madrid. when the spanish team lifted the world cup last sunday, it was a historic moment. but the way in which the national football federation president, luis rubiales, celebrated has made the last few days bittersweet ones for spanish football. the controversial kiss he gave star strikerjenni hermoso has been hogging the headlines. so too have this image of him celebrating the world cup victory just feet away from spain's queen letizia. after days of mounting pressure, mr rubiales had been expected to resign. but at an extraordinary general meeting of the football federation, where he still appeared to enjoy some support, he insisted the kiss was consensual and he remained fiercely defiant. translation: is that so serious that i have to leave, _ while having done the bestjob for spanish football? do you really believe that i have to resign? well, i am going to tell you something, i will not resign. i will not resign. applause this was supposed to be a week when spain celebrated women's football, and the greatest ever achievement by its national team, but instead all of that has been overshadowed by one man's behaviour and the backlash against him. the world cup winning squad has issued a statement in whichjenni hermoso insisted that the kiss was not consensual. i want to clarify that at no time did i consent to the case. i don't tolerate that my word is questioned, much less that words are invented that i haven't said. the players who signed the communique also said they will not represent their country until mr rubiales is removed. the episode has fed into an intense debate in spanish society about gender equality and sexual consent. translation: this is a critical moment in this country. - people are moving towards more gender equality. but this looks like an abuse of power and that's what we are fighting against. even the lionesses have weighed in. it's really sad that it totally ruined what was supposed to be the most special moment probably in hermoso's career, and spain's career. the government says it's taking action to remove mr rubiales from office and this should be spanish football's #metoo moment. mr rubiales's celebrations have triggered an institutional crisis in spanish football. the question now is how much this episode may have damaged spain's image as a modern sports superpower. guy hedgecoe, bbc news, madrid. well, jenni hermoso, the spanish player out of the centre of this storm, has given some more detail about that controversial kiss that she received from luis rubiales today. she said how she felt vulnerable and she felt she was the victim of an attack when she received a kiss, but there was a lack of respect in general. that, of course, completely contradicts the version that we have received from luis rubiales himself. he says it was all consensual. but over the coming days, i think that the position of luis rubiales, his claims, are going to come under increasing scrutiny. and on that, a lot will depend on whether he is able to survive and remain as president of the spanish football federation. guy hedger reporting. the british museum is without a director tonight after hartwig fischer announced he is stepping down with immediate effect, after admitting he failed to respond comprehensively to warnings about thefts from the museum in 2021. he had previously said there was no evidence to substantiate claims of theft, when estimates suggest more than 1,500 objects are missing, stolen or damaged. david silitto reports. the british museum, one of the greatest repositories of the world's treasures — and someone has been stealing them. it's understood more than 1,500 objects have disappeared, and two years ago, a danish antiquities dealer told the museum directors he'd seen some of their treasures on sale on ebay. and it's that warning that has led to the director of the museum, hartwig fischer, announcing that he'll be leaving museum rather sooner than he'd been planning. in a statement, he said... he has also made an apology to the man who raised those warnings, dr ittai gradel. it was necessary that hartwig fischer resigned. it was necessary for the museum to begin to move on. and i noted with great pleasure his personal apology to me. i accept it. the essence of is that they failed to take your warnings seriously when you made them. they refused to listen, they refused to further engage with me. they had no questions to ask of me. they never wanted to include me in the internatl so—called they never wanted to include me in the internal so—called "thorough investigation". that's a quote. it is unbelievable, what happened. the museum's deputy directory has also stepped back his duties. all this comes just over a week after the museum announced it was sacking one of its senior curators, understood to be peter higgs, who was, at one point, in charge of the parthenon marbles — treasures that greece has long wanted back. it's no wonder greek media has been taking a keen interest. but for politicians tasked with the job of oversight of the museum, there are more urgent issues. this is all about finding the objects, first of all, accounting for how they went missing, and ensuring that everything else in the british museum is absolutely secured. the museum is carrying out a review of its security, and a police investigation is under way. one person has been interviewed, but questions about exactly what has been stolen and how it all happened remain unanswered. we canjoin david outside the british museum now. just how embarrassing is this for the museum? i think there are two points here. first, how long this has been going on. remember, it was february 2021 when the first alert was made. that was an exchange of letters, right up until october 2022. the museum was still saying, we had investigated, the case is closed. it was only when the case is closed. it was only when the trustees were contacted that they looked a bit harder and they realised within two months that stuff was missing. then there is the wider point. it's notjust the parthenon sculptures. there are many countries with questions about objects here. one of the arguments that has been used over the years is, look, it's the british museum, the safest place they could be. and then something like this happens. yes, an embarrassment.— then something like this happens. yes, an embarrassment. thank you, david sillitoe _ yes, an embarrassment. thank you, david sillitoe reporting. _ it's not often that a photograph makes history, but this one — the first mugshot ever of a former us president — will never be forgotten. donald trump surrendered himself at fulton countyjail in georgia on charges of plotting to overturn the state's 2020 election results. he was released on bail while he awaits trial. this was his fourth arrest in five months on criminal charges. afterwards mr trump described the case as a travesty ofjustice, and posted the mugshot on social media. our north america editor sarah smith has been following events in atlanta, georgia the belligerent stare is entirely deliberate. designed to portray strength and defiance, as donald trump knew he was posing for an image that would become instantly iconic. he clearly liked the look — it was up on his website in minutes. and he even came back to twitter — now known as x — for the first time in over two years. "never surrender," it says. underneath a picture taken as he surrendered himself at fulton county jail. ostentatiously arriving for his arrest on his own plane, donald trump is turning each criminal case into a reality tv show. every moment of the journey choreographed for the cameras — he even gives the press access inside the cavalcade. his secret service protection team obligingly added to the drama with a very large motorcade for an ex—president. loud and showy, donald trump knows how to make an entrance, and he knows how to make it work for his presidential campaign. in a very quick 20 minutes inside the jail, he was fingerprinted and photographed. a terrible experience, he said later, even though he was apparently treated very nicely. the official charge sheet lists 13 counts against him and describes him as 63", weighing 215 lbs, or 97.5 kilos, with blonde or strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes. details supplied by him. he wasn't made to stand on the prison scales. speculation over whether he is lying about his weight has now become part of the debate over whether donald trump is a crook or a martyr. already cast as a villain by opponents, he maintains he is actually a victim. we did nothing wrong at all and we have every right, every single right to challenge an election that we think is dishonest, and we think it is very dishonest. never one to miss a marketing opportunity, mr trump is already selling mugshot merchandise, monetising the moment. it is $25 for a mugshot mug. get it? with profits going to pay his legal fees and fund his election campaign. this mugshot, you wait for it, it's going to be on posters, in people's dorm rooms, it's going to be on t—shirts. it is going to be a flag flown by people who love this country because they are backing donald trump — the courthouse in atlanta is where donald trump has to come to enter a plea next month. now, he and his committed supporters insist that he is innocent of all the charges, that these prosecutions against him are a deliberate attempt to try to stop him being re—elected president. he calls it election interference, which is ironic because that is pretty much exactly what he has been charged with here in the state of georgia. donald trump did nothing wrong. trump did not win in georgia. he produced no evidence of fraud here. but this remains a key swing state and will be a hard—fought battle ground in next year's election. sarah smith, bbc news, atlanta, georgia. russia says it has recovered ten bodies, and also flight recorders, from the scene of a jet crash presumed to have killed the head of the wagner mercenary group yevgeny prigozhin. they added that tests would be carried out to identify the victims. the kremlin has denied ordering mr prigozhin*s death, describing such speculation as a complete lie. let's join our moscow reporter will vernon. how much are we likely to be told about what the flight recorders contain? well, i don't think there is very much optimism here about those flight recorders. a lot of the russians i have been speaking to are pretty doubtful that the real truth will ever be known about what happened to that plane. you know, earlier i was on a conference call with president putin's spokesman, a daily call that happens with moscow—based journalists here. you can more or less ask any question you want. i asked dmitry peskov for his reaction to accusations from various western officials that it was the kremlin that was behind the killing of yevgeni prez —— prigozhin. a lot of russians believe that as well. that is what he said to me. he said those claims were an absolute liar, and he said, when we talk about this issue, we should only be guided by facts. we don't have any facts at the moment, they need to be clarified during the official investigation. so, a clear denial there by the kremlin. but will that be enough to convince those at home and abroad, who believe that the russian authorities were somehow involved in this incident? i don't think it will. and here is why. whenever the kremlin is accused of anything, and they have been accused of a lot of things, from poisonings and assassinations, to committing war crimes and organising coups, the standard response is always denial. if we cast our minds back to the beginning of last year, when we saw that russian troop build—up on the border with ukraine, there were many accusations levelled against the kremlin then that russia was planning to invade ukraine. and what was the kremlin*s response? yet again, a denial. a drink—driver who hit and killed a cyclist then hid his body in a shallow grave has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. alexander mckellar was speeding when he hit 63—year—old tony parsons near bridge of orchy in 2017. mckellar and his twin brother robert later buried mr parsons' body and his remains weren't found for three years. robert mckellar was jailed for five years and three months. alexandra mackenzie reports. it was near bridge of orchy that tony parsons went missing in september 2017. the 63—year—old grandfather was on a charity bike ride from fort william to his home in tillicoultry. footage from a cctv camera showed him cycling through glencoe village. the last known sighting was at the bridge of orchy hotel later that night. alexander mckellar pleaded guilty to killing tony parsons after knocking him off his bike while drunk, and driving at excessive speed. he and his brother robert pleaded guilty to attempting to defeat the ends of justice. tony parsons was left alone to die. the brothers returned later and took his body to the nearby auch estate, where they buried him. for three years, tony parsons' family had no idea what had happened to him. there were extensive searches of the area which came to nothing and there were various appeals, including the bbc*s crimewatch programme. but alexander mckellar confided in his then girlfriend, seen here in the middle. he showed her the burial site. she marked it with a red bull can and alerted the police. sentencing the brothers today, lord armstrong said there was no doubt the family had been deeply affected. you have caused them to suffer devastating loss and emotional harm, which is ongoing, and the lasting effect of which may be incalculable. nothing i can say or do can compensate for their loss. and i suspect that no sentence would ever be regarded as sufficient in their eyes. and that pain and grief seemed to show on the faces of tony parsons' family as they left court. alexandra mackenzie, bbc news, glasgow. a police officer is in a serious condition after being hit by a train while trying to save a distressed man who was on the tracks. nottinghamshire police said said they ofgem has announced, meaning household bills will fall slightly. the price cap, which applies to england, wales and scotland, sets the maximum amount that suppliers can charge for each unit of energy but not the total bill. if you use more, you will pay more. for a home using a typical amount of gas and electricity and paying by direct debit, the current annual bill is £2,074. that will fall to £1,923 for the final three months of this year. but the average household bill will still be hundreds of pounds higher than in the winter of 2021, when it was £1,277. and last winter's support of £400 from the government has ended, while standing charges are expected to rise, so many people will see little difference to their bills. our cost of living correspondent, colletta smith has been speaking to families at a theme park in warrington. with bills racking up on all sides, there has been one relief this summer holiday. i would say probably, because we've had quite a hot spring and summer, haven't we, so i think that's helped. we've not needed to have the heating on. i know there's quite a few of our friends who are really struggling to pay their electric and gas. and today's small drop in energy prices isn't going to change that, so plenty of people have been taking things into their own hands to try and get ahead. thomas and jenny from liverpool are on a prepayment meter and spent £800 on insulation this year to try and cut their bills. we are planning ahead, or trying to. but with the mortgage and the energy bills and the cost of living going up, it's going to be sort of quite tight for us. because we are not getting that extra government support this year, that £66 in monthly payments, despite this small drop in price, what we are all paying out this winter is going to feeljust as tough as last year. and there's another reason bills will not feel cheaper for many. all the standing charge on the rent and the meters all went up across the board. i don't think there was any need for that to go up. the regulator says that despite the increase in those charges and the different prices across britain, it is still fair. we have looked in the past at moving those standing charges _ into the price per unit. but the problem we have is that i you create really big both winners but also really big losers. so if you are a poor family that hasl high energy needs, so for example, someone who is elderly that needs the heating on sort of 24 _ hours a day, or families with disabled children, i if we were to do that, _ your bills become higher and you'd become significantly worse off. but many campaign groups disagree, saying it is those who already use the least energy who would benefit the least from the reduction in the price cap. because we have removed their energy bills support scheme of £400 and because their standing charges higher this winter, households which have lower than average consumption of energy will be seeing their bills rise, and that's more often lower—income households, that's more often renters who live in flats. the government says they are still giving extra payments to those struggling most. pensioners are receiving an extra £300 this winter alongside their winter fuel payment and everyone on universal credit is receiving £900 in direct cost—of—living support. the government's supportl is staggeringly complacent. labour would bring in a proper windfall tax to raise _ resources, help tackle . this cost—of—living crisis. there are lots of useful tips about how to keep energy bills down in your home on the bbc news tackling it together pages. because we can't breathe easy yet. another price rise is still on the cards when the regulator decides the new rates forjanuary. coletta smith, bbc news. in a summer of wildfires across the globe, canada is experiencing its worst on record. tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes and the military has been deployed to several regions. this footage was captured earlier this week — a terrifying tornado swirling amidst the flames. more than a thousand fires are burning right across canada — these dots show where fires are currently burning out of control. about two thirds of them are concentrated in the western province of british columbia and in the northwest territories, where hundreds of homes have been destroyed. our correspondent wyre davies reports from the town of kelowna. that's my house on fire and i think, my love, that's yours. that's big. joanna and duncan have been friends and neighbours for decades. i think that's us. the okanagan valley residents had never seen anything like the inferno that tore through their community, destroying almost everything in its path, including their homes. it was blindingly bright and it would get into a house and then you've got this raging fire with this kind of skeletonised dwelling in the forefront of it, and it was just moving from one to the next and then, at one point, there werejust dozens. duncan lost most of what he'd built and owned, including his dad's war medals, but his family's safe and the yorkshire native remains positive. i'm very philosophical about this stuff. it happens and it's terrible. in my case, i wish that i had thought it through better to get stuff out and put it in... i've got a pick—up truck, for god's sake. it is still too risky for residents to return here. but from the lake, the devastation is clear. this shows just how indiscriminate these forest fires are. here you have got three or four waterfront properties that have been completely gutted. just above them, and apparently right in the middle of the fire as well, all the houses are safe, completely pristine. in some places, the fire line is right up to the front door. via security cameras, some residents watched helplessly in real—time as their houses burned. others witnessed firefighters saving their properties. it's a testament to local rescue services that no lives were lost. there were situations where our staff were surrounded on all sides by fire, and they would not like me to tell you they were trapped. there is no question it's been dangerous. we saw fire behaviour, winds that ripped trees out by their roots and just laid them down like toothpicks. on a visit to a local evacuation centre, i asked the regional premier, david eby, if he thought climate change might be to blame for the record number of wildfires. without a doubt, the ferocity of the fires, the extent of the burning, the historic nature of the forest fires we're seeing, notjust here in british columbia, just devastating fires that are clearly linked to human—caused climate change. the biggest fires may have been tamed but there is still a significant threat. if the speed of the fires has been relentless, so has the response of the emergency services. chopper after chopper dropping buckets in the lake here to take water up to the hill to douse out fires that are continuing to burn. this crisis has undoubtedly strengthened the bond between the fire crews and a grateful public. but most here expect these events to become much more common in the future. wyre davies, bbc news, kelowna. now, have you ever taken a hotel shower gel or shampoo home with you? well, two guests at the dolphin hotel in pembroke dock in wales have been accused of stripping everything from their room during their stay, leaving only a bar of soap behind. the police say inquiries are under way. our wales correspondent tomos morgan has the details. last saturday, this couple stayed at the dolphin hotel in pembroke dock. however, on checkout, the landlady says this cctv footage shows them not only leaving the premises with their own things but their bags containing most of their room's items as well. two towels, two lamps, a kettle, and an extension cord was missing from room three, the couple's room the night before, with only the soap remaining. i was just really annoyed that these people in 2023 think they can just walk into a small family run business and think that they can just take what they want. i've had the odd people take the towel, you know, i take that on the chin, even though that costs me. but not to this, like, point, no. this is ridiculous. in total, around £200 worth of items were missing and the room was unusable for a few days until those items were replaced. in a now deleted post on social media, the hotel appealed for witnesses and information on facebook. hundreds shared it. dyfed—powys police said they're investigating a theft here and that inquiries are ongoing. tomos morgan, bbc news, pembroke dock. time for a look at the weather. here's ben rich. we have had some dramatic scenes in parts of the uk today, not least in scotland, some intense thunderstorms gave rise to some funnel clouds, you can see this one from a weather watcher in perth and kinross and won a funnel cloud touches the ground it is a tornado and from this picture it looks like this one in fife did touch down and we did see a tornado. it was the showers and storms that gave rise to those funnel clouds, particularly across eastern, central and southern parts of scotland but as you can see from this picture, we have had showers and thunderstorms elsewhere and some of those are still rattling around right now. i think most of the thunderstorms will ease in intensity overnight but we will continue to see some showers here and there, some clear spells as well but actually quite a fresh night, 7—11 . tomorrow, at the start of the weekend, a mix of sunshine and showers but as the weekend goes on i think the showers will lose some of their intensity. still plenty around on saturday, sunny spells and scatter shout in england and wales, heavy infantry in central and wales, heavy infantry in central and eastern england and in scotland and eastern england and in scotland and northern ireland, more cloud filtering from the north, some showery rain and quite a brisk rain for western scotland and

sanctions on russian oil sprung a leak? is the best cinch to find the uk has indirectly consumed more than 2 million barrels containing russian crude oil this year. women's football team — world cup winners after defeating england. but it ends with uproar over this moment, when the president of the football federation, luis rubiales, kissed a member of the team, jenni hermoso, on the lips, an image that's caused outrage in spain and elsewhere. he was also seen to be grabbing his crotch as he celebrated at the final whistle. mr rubiales has defiantly refused to resign, saying he is a victim of social assassination. now scores of players say they will not play for the national team until he is removed — and the government is looking to have him suspended. guy hedgecoe reports from madrid. when the spanish team lifted the world cup last sunday, it was a historic moment. but the way in which the national football federation president, luis rubiales, celebrated has made the last few days bittersweet ones for spanish football. the controversial kiss he gave star strikerjenni hermoso has been hogging the headlines. so too have this image of him celebrating the world cup victory just feet away from spain's queen letizia. after days of mounting pressure, mr rubiales had been expected to resign. but at an extraordinary general meeting of the football federation, where he still appeared to enjoy some support, he insisted the kiss was consensual and he remained fiercely defiant. translation: is that so serious that i have to leave, _ while having done the bestjob for spanish football? do you really believe that i have to resign? well, i am going to tell you something, i will not resign. i will not resign. applause this was supposed to be a week when spain celebrated women's football, and the greatest ever achievement by its national team, but instead all of that has been overshadowed by one man's behaviour and the backlash against him. the world cup winning squad has issued a statement in whichjenni hermoso insisted that the kiss was not consensual. i want to clarify that at no time did i consent to the case. i don't tolerate that my word is questioned, much less that words are invented that i haven't said. the players who signed the communique also said they will not represent their country until mr rubiales is removed. the episode has fed into an intense debate in spanish society about gender equality and sexual consent. translation: this is a critical moment in this country.
