are known to have died but hundreds still remain unaccounted for. search teams are checking through the rubble of burned—out buildings and vehicles. many people were forced to run into the sea, to escape the flames. an official review has been ordered into whether residents were given sufficient warning about the fire. it appears some early sirens never sounded. there are also questions over the speed of the emergency response. from maui, here's john sudworth. videos of the disaster continue to emerge. this one shows lahaina's residents huddled in the water — the only place of refuge they could find — as the smoke and ashes from their burning town rained down upon them. hundreds are still listed as missing. the authorities say temperatures here reached 1,000 degrees. the task of both finding and identifying the bodies will take time, according to hawaii's governor, himself a trained doctor, speaking to us media. they will find ten to 20 people per day, probably, until they finish. and it is probably going to take ten days. it is impossible to guess, really. the fire was so perilous, it took lives — it didn't leave survivors. some residents have been allowed to return to the charred remains of their homes. there is our bed. but beyond the physical destruction, there is a far deeper concern for those who survived — the fate of neighbours yet unaccounted for. i'm rattling of our hawaiian kingdom. and one of the things that i hope that you can continue to get the message out is to tourists who continue to snore, snorkel and enjoy their vacation, that this is a really hard time for our residents. and there's just they've just been there's been a lot of tourists that have been very insensitive to the fact that so many of our loved ones have died and we haven't even been able to find everyone yet. and so if they could just be a little more sensitive and pause their vacations for now, as we try to manage through this disaster. to india now where landslides and flash floods have killed almost 60 people in the northern state of himachal pradesh. several people were killed when a temple collapsed in the capital, shimla. rescuers have been trying to free those still trapped under debris. local officials have warned residents to remain at home — as more heavy rainfall is expected. siddharth bakaria is from the sahyog foundation, an environmental charity in himachal pradesh. he described the destruction he had witnessed. the whole administration is rescuing the people who are under debris and the people who are covered by a lot of debris. and some people lost their lives and some people are injured and still rescue is going on. and even the whole administration is directing people to stay in their in their houses, in their workplaces, where they are working. so this way, the whole system is going on right now. the central government did before, and they are supporting the people who lost their lives before, also because there was huge destruction in manali as well before this flood. so right now, the state government and central government is looking after the people who lost their lives, who lost their houses, who lost a loved one. so, i mean, if we talk about the reason for this mass destruction, which happens in this month, today, even so, i mean, we should look at the the whole forest policy, which should be amended. and if we work in that way, we work for deforestation, we work for illegal mining so that can be a cure for them. a typhoon is expected to hitjapan imminently, causing heavy flooding and widespread damage to infrastructure. authorities are warning of possible mudslides and flooding. hundreds of flights and train services have been suspended. 0ur reporterjay sung lee has more. japan's meteorological agency says typhoon lan is likely to bring up to 400 millimetres of heavy rainfall in some areas from tuesday to wednesday, as well as ferocious winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour. now that's strong enough to topple a moving truck. these forecasts have led to authorities warning of floods and landslides, as well as rivers swelling up. major cities injapan's central region, as you can see in this map, including osaka and nagoya, are being impacted by the storm. and the typhoon is expected to make its way north off the coast of hokkaido island. now, hundreds of flights and train services have been cancelled on tuesday, as well as universal studios japan, the major theme park in the city of osaka, as you can see in this map, has been closed for safety reasons. now, the storm, which is expected to slightly weaken as it approaches japan, comes as thousands of japanese people celebrate bon festival, which is a major holiday injapan, where people commemorate their ancestors and when millions across the country travel back home to see theirfamilies and spend time with them. so these travel disruptions are likely to be a major inconvenience to thousands of people across japan. now, this is the second storm to hitjapan in recent weeks. earlier this month, typhoon khanun battered southern regions, bringing heavy rain and winds and killing at least two people. a confusing afternoon in the us state of georgia — a court in fulton county is looking into election interference — and we could say another indictment against former president donald trump. according to the reuters news agency, a charging document was posted on the court's website, then quickly removed. soon after, the district attorney's office said those reports from reuters were "inaccurate." so it's still unclear what happened. the da has been expected to ask a grand jury to charge mr trump over efforts to overturn election results in georgia. mr trump denies any wrongdoing. 0ur north america editor sarah smith reports. that's what all the signs are, that there will be fresh charges laid against donald trump very soon now. and that will, of course, be the fourth criminal indictment against the former president. there was briefly a great flurry of excitement here a few hours ago when it looked like the charges had appeared on the court's website. but it turned out that that really was fake news. so we don't know exactly what he's likely to be accused of, but it will relate to election fraud and attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election here in the state of georgia, because this is where mr trump and his allies concentrated a huge amount of their efforts after the election, claiming falsely that hundreds of thousands of fake ballots had been counted in joe biden's favour. and this is where donald trump phoned the senior election official and asked him to find just enough votes to tip the state in his favour. and you remember, it was actually less than a fortnight ago that donald trump appeared in court in washington on totally separate charges of election fraud. and he is, of course, still facing prosecution in florida over retention of classified documents and in new york over hush money payments. so there are a lot of court cases stacking up for him, but he is as defiant as ever. and he said on social media today that he didn't tamper with the election results here in georgia, the people who tampered with them were the ones who rigged the election. that's what he's claiming. let's take a look at some other stories in the headlines. a court in montana has ruled in favour of a group of sixteen young people who accused the state of violating their rights to a clean and healthy environment. in a landmark climate trial, the judge ruled a state law preventing officials from considering the impacts of greenhouse gases when issuing permits for fossil fuel development, was unconstitutional. the west african regional bloc, ecowas, says officers serving in northern ireland — including their surnames and places of work — have fallen into the hands of dissident republican groups, who do not support the peace process. the chief constable of the police service of northern ireland, confirmed this today, after last week's data breach, in which details on more than 10,000 employees, were mistakenly released online. sarah girvin, has the full story. when news of the psni data breach broke six days ago, the force's chief constable said he was aware of claims from dissident republican paramilitaries that they had access to it. today he confirmed the information was in their hands. we are now confident that the workforce data set is in the hands of dissident republicans and it is therefore our planning assumption that they will use this list to generate fear and uncertainty as well as intimidating or targeting officers and staff. the reason why this is so concerning for thousands of people is that every police officer in northern ireland is a target for violent dissident republican paramilitaries who are against the peace process. the last attack was just a few months ago, when senior detective john caldwell was shot and seriously injured. after that, the terror threat level in northern ireland was raised to severe. that is the highest in the uk. and it is in that climate that police officers here work every day. speaking anonymously to the bbc, this psni support worker described the impact of the data leak on his life. it has brought on a level of panic that hasn't been around for a lot of years. it has given my partner issues as well. she is concerned and is extremely panicked about me going to work. earlier today, sinn fein said extracts of the leaked information were posted on a wall outside a party office in belfast before being removed by staff. their policing spokesperson said he believes dissident republicans were behind that action in a bid to prove they have the information. police are investigating those claims. the police rightly said that there was a claim that they had this information. i think this is, whoever is involved in this, it is their motive to say, actually, we do have this, and to up the ante in terms of trying to intimidate police officers and their staff. we now know that half of northern ireland's police officers have inquired through the police federation that represents rank—and—file officers about potential damages. with more than 10,000 people involved, a potential compensation bill could run into tens of millions of pounds. today, the federation urged all police officers and staff to exercise maximum vigilance. these days, it may seem as though we are constantly being flooded by an endless avalanche of bad news. well, we feel it here as well in this newsroom as well ? which is why this week, we are rolling out a series looking at something a little more positive. we'll be chatting with everyday people who are tackling big problems. they have seen in their various communities. and today, we have christina dean — founder and board chair of re—dress.she is on a mission to move the world towards a circularfashion industry — so that we don t pollute the earth with the clothes that we manufacture, buy and wear. i started to redress 16 years ago off the back of being a journalist in writing and research about the textile industry's huge negative impact on the planet and public health. prior to being a journalist i was a practising dentist with a very deep and committed passion to the public health so it was passionate research into the textile industry and understanding its effects on the environment and public health prompted me to dig deep and start a nonprofit working to raise awareness and solve some of fashion's crisis on the environment. what are some big offenders, i've seen a lot of boxes to recycle clothes in big stores now but what is the biggest issue to the environment rather when it comes to the fashion industry? the main problem with the fashion industry is overconsumption. over the last 20 odd years we have seen a massive increase in fashion consumption. so much so that today, we are producing and selling over 100 billion garments every year which is a 50% increase since 2006. the problem with fashion consumption is that when you consume, you have to produce. as you produce, you inevitably have to create a negative environmental impacts on c02, chemical and land use and specifically waste. it is shocking that around 70% of the clothes that are produced every year will end up in landfill or incineration. the main problems that we have witnessed of the last 20 years are really due to overconsumption and the lack of recycling to put these materials that have been wasted back to use. in terms of recycled clothes, like many things with green energy, is it costly to recycle these clothes and make them into new ones? or do people really want to buye recycled clothes has there been any movement or education to teach people about the different ways they can consume? in terms of clothing recycling it is absolutely packed with complexity and in essence the complexity boils down to be fired for composition of our close because we are who we have a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres so in the waste stream these different fibre types are very difficult to separate. so clothing recycling is terribly difficult. from a technological perspective and a recycling perspective also from a collection and sourcing and etc. so complicated. that was christina dean — founder and board chair of re—dress. the story now of a lucky escape for 13—year—old boy, who survived after slipping and falling nearly 100 feet at the grand canyon in arizona. it took rescue crews two hours to pull him to safety, and he was airlifted to hospital in las vegas. wyre davis has the details... incredible that this teen is alive to tell the story, just 13 years old, on summer vacation with his mom... it was headline news across the us networks, including abc's good morning america. the boy who survived nine broken vertebrae, a ruptured spleen, a broken hand and a collapsed lung. 13—year—old wyatt kauffman fell from one of the most popular parts of the grand canyon, bright angel point, an easily accessible but dangerously exposed part of the trail. taking pictures on my cellphone on my camera and then i went all the way up to the very top of the point. and it's flat out there and you can see the entire canyon. another tourist wanted to take a picture. the teenager stepped to one side, and lost his balance. once they were getting up and they were done with the picture, and i kind of stood up, i lost my grip, and that's when i started to fall back. iwas, like, inches away from death. it only takes one moment of inattentiveness or one slip to potentially fall several hundred feet. unable to reach the area by helicopter, and unaware of the extent of wyatt's injuries, the park's search and rescue team set up an elaborate abseil or rappel system to bring him to safety. the grand canyon is one of america's most popular destinations, visited recently by president biden, but it can also be unforgiving. around 12 people lose their lives here every year. wyatt kauffman was lucky. he fell into the abyss, but lived to tell the tale. wyre davies, bbc news, washington. before we go... just he's now ready for the next stage of his life and will soon leave his family — to live independently. that's all for now — stay with bbc news. hello there. there were certainly winners and losers with monday's weather. morning cloud gradually broke up and in fact, newquay, cornwall, it was warm enough to venture out to the beach into the afternoon. it was a different story across parts of north wales and northern england. in fact, we saw over two inches of rain, 60 millimetres of rain in some places and it was a pretty dismal day. now that low pressure is gradually drifting its way eastwards off into the north sea, allowing this ridge of high pressure to build. so a much quieter start to the story for tuesday. there will be some sunny spells as we go through the day. a few scattered showers will tend to develop particularly heavy ones across parts of southern scotland and north—east england, maybe with the odd rumble of thunder. but certainly with more sunshine and lighter winds, it will feel a little warmer. top temperatures possibly as high as 2a degrees, 75 fahrenheit. now, as we go through tuesday evening, we'll continue to see some clearing skies, some patchy mist and fog will form. some of it dense in places and quite stubborn to lift away. it will be a relatively mild start to wednesday morning, with temperatures widely into the low to mid—teens. high pressure is going to build as we go through the day on wednesday. so once we've got rid of those misty, murky conditions, first thing in the morning, a few scattered showers perhaps across scotland and northeast england, but on the whole, dry, settled and sunny foremost and a little warmer as well. we could see temperatures peaking at 25 celsius. that's 77 fahrenheit. warmer still as we go into thursday, a lot of dry, settled, sunny weather once again across england and wales. some patchy coastal mist and murk may be lingering in the far south—west, but temperatures could peak once again widely into the mid 20s. maybe one or two spots in the south—east could see temperatures into the high 20s. and that's because we're going to continue to tap into some warmth that's coming up from the near continent, not the extreme heat that they have been seeing, but certainly as we head towards friday, we'll see an increasing spell of heat and humidity. but at the same time, it comes with a caveat as this weather front pushes in from the west on friday, it could trigger off some sharp and thundery downpours as it continues to track its way steadily east. is japan's economic recovery gathering steam? are known to have died but hundreds still remain unaccounted for. search teams are checking through the rubble of burned—out buildings and vehicles. many people were forced to run into the sea, to escape the flames. an official review has been ordered into whether residents were given sufficient warning about the fire. it appears some early sirens never sounded. there are also questions over the speed of the emergency response. from maui, here's john sudworth. videos of the disaster continue to emerge. this one shows lahaina's residents huddled in the water — the only place of refuge they could find — as the smoke and ashes from their burning town rained down upon them. hundreds are still listed as missing. the authorities say temperatures here reached 1,000 degrees. the task of both finding and identifying the bodies will take time, according to hawaii's governor, himself a trained doctor, speaking to us media. they will find ten to 20 people per day, probably, until they finish. and it is probably going to take ten days. it is impossible to guess, really. the fire was so perilous, it took lives — it didn't leave survivors. some residents have been allowed to return to the charred remains of their homes. there is our bed. but beyond the physical destruction, there is a far deeper concern for those who survived — the fate of neighbours yet unaccounted for. i'm rattling of our hawaiian kingdom. and one of the things that i hope that you can continue to get the message out is to tourists who continue to snore, snorkel and enjoy their vacation, that this is a really hard time for our residents. and there's just they've just been there's been a lot of tourists that have been very insensitive to the fact that so many of our loved ones have died and we haven't even been able to find everyone yet. and so if they could just be a little more sensitive and pause their vacations for now, as we try to manage through this disaster. to india now where landslides and flash floods have killed almost 60 people in the northern state of himachal pradesh. several people were killed when a temple collapsed in the capital, shimla. rescuers have been trying to free those still trapped under debris. local officials have warned residents to remain at home — as more heavy rainfall is expected. siddharth bakaria is from the sahyog foundation, an environmental charity in himachal pradesh. he described the destruction he had witnessed. the whole administration is rescuing the people who are under debris and the people who are covered by a lot of debris. and some people lost their lives and some people are injured and still rescue is going on. and even the whole administration is directing people to stay in their in their houses, in their workplaces, where they are working. so this way, the whole system is going on right now. the central government did before, and they are supporting the people who lost their lives before, also because there was huge destruction in manali as well before this flood. so right now, the state government and central government is looking after the people who lost their lives, who lost their houses, who lost a loved one. so, i mean, if we talk about the reason for this mass destruction, which happens in this month, today, even so, i mean, we should look at the the whole forest policy, which should be amended. and if we work in that way, we work for deforestation, we work for illegal mining so that can be a cure for them. a typhoon is expected to hitjapan imminently, causing heavy flooding and widespread damage to infrastructure. authorities are warning of possible mudslides and flooding. hundreds of flights and train services have been suspended. 0ur north america editor sarah smith reports. that's what all the signs are, that there will be fresh charges laid against donald trump very soon now. and that will, of course, be the fourth criminal indictment against the former president. there was briefly a great flurry of excitement here a few hours ago when it looked like the charges had appeared on the court's website. but it turned out that that really was fake news. so we don't know exactly what he's likely to be accused of, but it will relate to election fraud and attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election here in the state of georgia, because this is where mr trump and his allies concentrated a huge amount of their efforts after the election, claiming falsely that hundreds of thousands of fake ballots had been counted in joe biden's favour. and this is where donald trump phoned the senior election official and asked him to find just enough votes to tip the state in his favour. and you remember, it was actually less than a fortnight ago that donald trump appeared in court in washington on totally separate charges of election fraud. and he is, of course, still facing prosecution in florida over retention of classified documents and in new york over hush money payments. so there are a lot of court cases stacking up for him, but he is as defiant as ever. and he said on social media today that he didn't tamper with the election results here in georgia, the people who tampered with them were the ones who rigged the election. that's what he's claiming. let's take a look at some other stories in the headlines. a court in montana has ruled in favour of a group of sixteen young people who accused the state of violating their rights to a clean and healthy environment. in a landmark climate trial, the judge ruled a state law preventing officials from considering the impacts of greenhouse gases when issuing permits for fossil fuel development, was unconstitutional. the west african regional bloc, ecowas, says it's shocked to learn of attempts by the military junta in niger to bring charges of high treason against the deposed president, mohamed bazoum. ecowas called it a new form of provocation which contradicted the military*s reported willingness to find a peaceful solution. thousands of protesters chanting anti—government slogans marched in the bangladeshi capital, dhaka, hours after a prominent islamist leader who was serving a life sentence died of a heart attack. 83—year—old delwar hossain sayeedi, the vice president of the opposition party, had been sentenced to death in 2013 by another in his 30s were stabbed outside the two brewers nighclub in clapham high street. they have since been discharged from hospital. no arrests have been made. a five—year—old girl has suffered "significant" facial injuries after being attacked by a dog outside a corner shop. the attack happened in norton in stockton—on—tees, on saturday evening. cleveland police said the child has been hospitalised for treatment and a dog had been seized. a force spokesman said the owner of the dog remained at the scene after the attack. scotland's biggest teaching union says new recruits are officers serving in northern ireland — including their surnames and places of work — have fallen into the hands of dissident republican groups, who do not support the peace process. the chief constable of the police service of northern ireland, confirmed this today, after last week's data breach, in which details on more than 10,000 employees, were mistakenly released online. sarah girvin, has the full story. when news of the psni data breach broke six days ago, the force's chief constable said he was aware of claims from dissident republican paramilitaries that they had access to it. today he confirmed the information was in their hands. we are now confident that the workforce data set is in the hands of dissident republicans and it is therefore our planning assumption that they will use this list to generate fear and uncertainty as well as intimidating or targeting officers and staff. the reason why this is so concerning for thousands of people is that every police officer in northern ireland is a target for violent dissident republican paramilitaries who are against the peace process. the last attack was just a few months ago, when senior detective john caldwell was shot and seriously injured. after that, the terror threat level in northern ireland was raised to severe. that is the highest in the uk. and it is in that climate that police officers here work every day. speaking anonymously to the bbc, this psni support worker described the impact of the data leak on his life. it has brought on a level of panic that hasn't been around for a lot of years. it has given my partner issues as well. she is concerned and is extremely panicked about me going to work. earlier today, sinn fein said extracts of the leaked information were posted on a wall outside a party office in belfast before being removed by staff. their policing spokesperson said he believes dissident republicans were behind that action in a bid to prove they have the information. police are investigating those claims. the police rightly said that there was a claim that they had this information. i think this is, whoever is involved in this, it is their motive to say, actually, we do have this, and to up the ante in terms of trying to intimidate police officers and their staff. we now know that half of northern ireland's police officers have inquired through the police federation that represents rank—and—file officers about potential damages. with more than 10,000 people involved, a potential compensation bill could run into tens of millions of pounds. today, the federation urged all police officers and staff to exercise maximum vigilance. these days, it may seem as though we are constantly being flooded by an endless avalanche of bad news. well, we feel it here as well in this newsroom as well ? which is why this week, we are rolling out a series looking at something a little more positive. we'll be chatting with everyday people who are tackling big problems. they have seen in their various communities. and today, we have christina dean — founder and board chair of re—dress.she is on a mission to move the world towards a circularfashion industry — so that we don t pollute the earth with the clothes that we manufacture, buy and wear. i started to redress 16 years ago off the back of being a journalist in writing and research about the textile industry's huge negative impact on the planet and public health. prior to being a journalist i was a practising dentist with a very deep and committed passion to the public health so it was passionate research into the textile industry and understanding its effects on the environment and public health prompted me to dig deep and start a nonprofit working to raise awareness and solve some of fashion's crisis on the environment. what are some big offenders, i've seen a lot of boxes to recycle clothes in big stores now but what is the biggest issue to the environment rather when it comes to the fashion industry? the main problem with the fashion industry is overconsumption. over the last 20 odd years we have seen a massive increase in fashion consumption. so much so that today, we are producing and selling over 100 billion garments every year which is a 50% increase since 2006. the problem with fashion consumption is that when you consume, you have to produce. as you produce, you inevitably have to create a negative environmental impacts on c02, chemical and land use and specifically waste. it is shocking that around 70% of the clothes that are produced every year will end up in landfill or incineration. the main problems that we have witnessed of the last 20 years are really due to overconsumption and the lack of recycling to put these materials that have been wasted back to use. in terms of recycled clothes, like many things with green energy, is it costly to recycle these clothes and make them into new ones? or do people really want to buye recycled clothes has there been any movement or education to teach people about the different ways they can consume? in terms of clothing recycling it is absolutely packed with complexity and in essence the complexity boils down to be fired for composition of our close because we are who we have a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres so in the waste stream these different fibre types are very difficult to separate. so clothing recycling is terribly difficult. from a technological perspective and a recycling perspective also from a collection and sourcing and etc. so complicated. that was christina dean — founder and board chair of re—dress. the story now of a lucky escape for 13—year—old boy, who survived after slipping and falling nearly 100 feet at the grand canyon in arizona. it took rescue crews two hours to pull him to safety, and he was airlifted to hospital in las vegas. wyre davis has the details... incredible that this teen is alive to tell the story, just 13 years old, on summer vacation with his mom... it was headline news across the us networks, including abc's good morning america. the boy who survived nine broken vertebrae, a ruptured spleen, a broken hand and a collapsed lung. 13—year—old wyatt kauffman fell from one of the most popular parts of the grand canyon, bright angel point, an easily accessible but dangerously exposed part of the trail. taking pictures on my cellphone on my camera and then i went all the way up to the very top of the point. and it's flat out there and you can see the entire canyon. another tourist wanted to take a picture. the teenager stepped to one side, and lost his balance. once they were getting up and they were done with the picture, and i kind of stood up, i lost my grip, and that's when i started to fall back. iwas, like, inches away from death. it only takes one moment of inattentiveness or one slip to potentially fall several hundred feet. unable to reach the area by helicopter, and unaware of the extent of wyatt's injuries, the park's search and rescue team set up an elaborate abseil or rappel system to bring him to safety. the grand canyon is one of america's most popular destinations, visited recently by president biden, but it can also be unforgiving. around 12 people lose their lives here every year. wyatt kauffman was lucky. he fell into the abyss, but lived to tell the tale. wyre davies, bbc news, washington. before we go... just time to show you these pictures from singapore... where zookeepers held a birthday celebration for the first panda cub born in the country. here is le le receiving some special treats. mandai zoo say he's now ready for the next stage of his life and will soon leave his family — to live independently. that's all for now — stay with bbc news. hello there. there were certainly winners and losers with monday's weather. morning cloud gradually broke up and in fact, newquay, cornwall, it was warm enough to venture out to the beach into the afternoon. it was a different story across parts of north wales and northern england. in fact, we saw over two inches of rain, 60 millimetres of rain in some places and it was a pretty dismal day. now that low pressure is gradually drifting its way eastwards off into the north sea, allowing this ridge of high pressure to build. so a much quieter start to the story for tuesday. there will be some sunny spells as we go through the day. a few scattered showers will tend to develop particularly heavy ones across parts of southern scotland and north—east england, maybe with the odd rumble of thunder. but certainly with more sunshine and lighter winds, it will feel a little warmer. top temperatures possibly as high as 2a degrees, 75 fahrenheit. now, as we go through tuesday evening, we'll continue to see some clearing skies, some patchy mist and fog will form. some of it dense in places and quite stubborn to lift away. it will be a relatively mild start to wednesday morning, with temperatures widely into the low to mid—teens. high pressure is going to build as we go through the day on wednesday. so once we've got rid of those misty, murky conditions, first thing in the morning, a few scattered showers perhaps across scotland and northeast england, but on the whole, dry, settled and sunny foremost and a little warmer as well. we could see temperatures peaking at 25 celsius. that's 77 fahrenheit. warmer still as we go into thursday, a lot of dry, settled, sunny weather once again across england and wales. some patchy coastal mist and murk may be lingering in the far south—west, but temperatures could peak once again widely into the mid 20s. maybe one or two spots in the south—east could see temperatures into the high 20s. and that's because we're going to continue to tap into some warmth that's coming up from the near continent, not the extreme heat that they have been seeing, but certainly as we head towards friday, we'll see an increasing spell of heat and humidity. but at the same time, it comes with a caveat as this weather front pushes in from the west on friday, it could trigger off some sharp and thundery downpours as it continues to track its way steadily east. is japan's economic recovery gathering steam?
