more than 2200 structures — homes and businesses — have been damaged or destroyed. recovery crews are combing through the charred ruins and hundreds of people remain unaccounted for. the wildfires are the worst to hit a state in america in over a century, and there is growing anger on maui — over both the lack of warning about the fires, and the response by officials, to the thousands left without homes, and in some cases without adequate food and water. sophie long reports from the island. this is what remains of lahaina. cars abandoned as people ran and jumped into the sea to escape the flames. homes and businesses reduced to charred remains. president biden promised immediate help and said every available asset should be used to provide it. but days later, people here say it's not yet reaching those most in need. and people like felicia are desperately trying to get supplies into lahaina themselves. i'm frustrated. people are hungry. we're all together, we're one family. we need to take care of each other. no—one*s feeding everybody. they're traumatised. they're upset. no—one*s giving hugs. they need mental help. what do you need from me? do you hear people in the same pads since the fire on thursday? kids in the same diapers since thursday? people without food. like, they haven't drank since before the fire. what are we doing? hundreds of thousands flock to maui's stunning coastline every year, and thousands ofjobs here are dependent on tourism. but the jarring contrast between those holidaying and those hurting is difficult to bear, with so many still unaccounted for. the same waters that our people just died in three days ago _ are the same waters the very next day these visitors, - tourists, were swimming in. and that says a lot _ about where their heart and mind is through all of this, - and where our heart mind is. you don't see our people swimming, snorkeling, surfing. _ nobody is having fun in tragedy and continuing their lives- like nothing has happened. there is two hawaiis right now — there's the hawaii we're living in and the hawaii _ they're living in. they're visiting in. the search and recovery teams continue their difficult task of sifting through the remains. people queue for hours to get back to what were their homes. confusion is leading to frustration. 8.30, we went there. they said, "go, go to the other side." so we went to the other side, and same thing. there's like a line and it's not even moving. so we came back here. so we got here at 9.30, and it's 12.30 right now. and they're not telling us what to do. the cops arejust going back and forth. but the authorities are asking for patience. we know we've got to go quick, but we've got to do it right. so when we pick up the remains and they fall apart, and so when you have 200 people running through the scene yesterday, and some of you, that's what you're stepping on. i don't know how much more you want me to describe it. that's what you're stepping on. give us a little bit of time to contain that. please. people already know this is the deadliest disaster in hawaii's history and the death toll is still climbing. sophie long, bbc news, maui. 0ur reporter helena humphrey is in maui and spoke to us in the last hour. the death toll has climbed to 93. but the warnings we're hearing is they're going to climb further because 1000 people in this island simply having been heard from in this emergency shelter as a missing persons shelter and have a list of people unaccounted for and there are those that have been found, those that have not yet found that accounts for 4000 people. devastating numbers and the challenge at hand in his recovery effort is to identify the victims, more sniffer dogs have been brought in from the mainland and the grim task of combing through the rubble and as the police chief put it, they can only go as fast as the dogs can go, just 3% of the hardest areas had actually been covered, and the police chief said this fire was so ferocious that it left twisted metal and its wake. pictures of boats out on the water and caught fire, such was the ferocity of these flames and a massive challenge at hand and at the same time, questions being asked about why there were no alerts in terms of sirens. and some the people we spoke to said they also didn't receive text messages to simply realise they had to run for their lives. i spoke to the governor about the failure of the early warning system here is what he told me. this process is usually come after but we are doing them in parallel. this is a community led response. take a look at the tents a few minutes ago. more donations have come in. everything from food to clean drinking water that people need. probably one of the starkest images, people donating shoes because people have lost everything, they fled with absolutely nothing and now their properties are burnt to the ground. there are questions being asked about the federal response to this. president biden was asked in a press appearance, are you planning to go to maui, his response was we are looking into it. people here are without anything, people say they are sleeping out in the open we have met right now because there is not room in the shelters. the governor saying 1000 rooms had been secured but we know thousands on this island are now homeless. he touched that most of the support coming through is actually community led. is the right support from authorities coming through, and what happens next in terms of the relief efforts? more su ort is terms of the relief efforts? more support is needed. _ terms of the relief efforts? more support is needed. according - terms of the relief efforts? we support is needed. according to the governor more support from the us mainland is on its way. president biden has promised to provide more than thoughts and prayers, to deploy all of the necessary assets needed in what is now becoming a humanitarian crisis. certainly a lot of these efforts continue to be community led. there is growing frustration from people saying they simply do not have the things they needin simply do not have the things they need in terms of food, shelter, water. if you take a look at the initial response from fema, they say 5.5 billion us dollars will be neededin 5.5 billion us dollars will be needed in terms of rebuilding maui. we are not there yet, we have people sleeping out in the open, people need the basics to survive as we see one humanitarian, atrophy, one natural disaster, the dual challenge of a hurricane and wildfire present all of these other issues people are going to encounter it is this response continues.- going to encounter it is this response continues. going to encounter it is after six people drowned off the coast of france. labour says people—smugglers are "running rings" around government's efforts to tackle the problem. uk ministers have pushed tougher laws through parliament, which make it illegal for people to claim asylum in britain if they've arrived on small boats. simonjones has the latest. despite yesterday's deaths in the channel off the coast of france unfortunately it was going to happen sometime and we will have another one before long. all the time people are trying to cross the channel in these boats which are not designed for purpose. things will go wrong. politically, that may mean choppy waters ahead. simonjones, bbc news, dover. a service has been held to mark the 25th anniversary of the 0magh bombing — the greatest single loss of life during the troubles in northern ireland. families of those who died gathered in 0magh's memorial garden where the names and ages of the victims were read out. 29 people — including a woman pregnant with twins — died in the 1998 real ira bombing. no—one has ever been convicted of carrying out the attack. one of those speaking at the service was michael gallagher, whose son aidan was among the victims. he paid tribute to the catholic priest, father kevin mullan, who was at the scene of the blast and tended to the victims — but died earlier this year. earlier this year, sadly, we said goodbye to father kevin mullan. father kevin was present on the 15th of august 25 years ago. he attended the victims on the scene, anointing with the last rites and providing comfort to the injured and the dying. we will always be indebted to him for the strength and compassion and courage he demonstrated on the day and the months and years and decades that followed. kevin was a visionary that seen beyond green and orange. it didn't matter to him if you worshipped in a church or chapel, his wisdom and influence filtered into the community as he worked tirelessly, unselfishly, to create unity and togetherness. we will remember him as a decent and honourable human being. the health secretary, steve barclay, says he wants to offer the help of hospitals in england — to reduce nhs waiting lists in scotland and wales. figures this week showed a record 7.5 million people waiting for treatment in england alone. the government claims the percentage waiting for more than 18 months is higher in the two devolved nations than in england. 0ur political correspondent, ione wells explains why the government is making this offer now. the prime minister rishi sunak said people should hold him to account if nhs waiting list are not followed by january 2025. so far, the figures are not going the right direction. we heard injune, waiting list for hospital treatments in england had a record high of more than seven and a half million people waiting for the first time. i think ministers in the uk government are aware that this could come back to bite them and are keen to argue that things would not be better under opposition parties, labour and scottish national party who are in government and control of the nhs in wales and scotland. steve barclay the english health secretary has pointed to 73,000 people waiting for treatment and wales more than 21600 people are waiting for certain appointments and treatments in scotland and wash and scottish governments have hit back at the saying they are not comparing like for like figures because for waiting lists, it's in different in different types of treatments and statistics and think it's fair to the uk. the uk government will argue that is one reason to bring people together and try to work out solutions to joint challenges but we may see more and more of this kind of attempted comparison between the different nations and pitting them against each other. as we come closer to the next general election because the conservative party will certainly be aware that there will be needing to defend their record on the nhs in england having been in power for about 1k years. now it's time for a look at today's sport with 0lly foster. a couple of games in the premier league on sunday, the opening weekend, both drawn, 1—1 to review a controversial hijab law behind closed doors — meaning it is likely there will be no public debate on the issue. the so—called hijab and chastity bill would impose new punishments on women who fail to wear the headscarf. the bbc*s azadeh moshiri explains. the timing of the spill is what makes it so significant, because we're only a month away from the one year anniversary of mahsa amini's death, the young kurdish woman who died in custody of the morality police after allegedly violating the country's strict dress code. now, that event led to protests across the country and led to a movement that the government struggled to contain. what we're seeing now is a push and pull between a government that wants to protect the mandatory hijab and women in iran who are openly defying it, because as you'll see here, the streets of iran in places like the capital tehran, don't look like they did a year ago before these protests erupted. now, the bill itself is called the hijab and chastity bill. and what it would do is enforce new punishments and hefty fines on women who violate this law. but what is also concerning is the fact that iran's parliament has invoked article 85. that means that a parliamentary committee can now review the bill behind closed doors and then ratify it. now, once it's approved by iran's powerful guardian council, mps would then vote on whether it would be enforced on a three to 5 year trial basis, what they call an experimental basis. all of this means that the particulars of a bill that further criminalises the mandatory hijab could go through without any open debate. now, this isn't the first time or the first few steps that the iranian government has been taking before this anniversary. they've made several moves to further enforce the hijab. and one of those moves, you will remember, was bringing back the morality police, the same morality police that they took off the streets of iran after the death of mahsa amini. now, we may not see protests on the scale of what we did before, but women are still openly defying the mandatory hijab law, despite a violent crackdown by the islamic republic. and that is going to worry the establishment there, because they see any threat to the mandatory hijab as a threat to the islamic republic itself. and they're going to want to stamp it out. she's one of the most popular and successful musicians in the world — and now, taylor swift has inspired an english literature course at a university in belgium. students starting their degree at ghent university will be analysing the songs of the american singer. swift is currently packing out stadiums across america on tour. we're joined now by elly mccausland, who's an assistant professor at ghent university, and will teach the course. she's also a self—declared *swiftie'. i bet there are a number of excited fans ready to take this course, tell us a little bit more about it, and what is it about taylor swift's songs you think are worth studying in an english literature course? i suppose there is a few different parts of my answer. i think why now, i think swift is at the height of her popularity, in some ways peak of her popularity, in some ways peak of her career, packing out stadiums, making headlines, it seems timely to start thinking about what is the reason behind the success. actually i have been thinking about quite a long time about the connections between swift's music and english literature, especially during the pandemic, she released folklore and ever more. i started thinking about parallels with a number of texts from english literature and i thought we should be discussing this, thinking about it more. the time seemed right to put it into practice to create a course about it. ,., ., . ~ , skies and sunshine around as well, such as here in dumfries and galloway. also some showers such as these, recorded by a weather watcher in shropshire. and it's been blustery, too, for this time of year, and it does stay unsettled into the start of next week. a wet start for many on monday, but then things will quieten down. so turning drier, more settled and also warmer, especially in the south. this is the satellite picture from earlier on today. you can see various weather fronts just approaching the south west of england and wales. they'll be pushing further northwards through tonight. so bringing some heavy downpours of rain for most. we'll see rain spread into central southern england tonight, pushing northwards across northern england by the time we get to dawn tomorrow, a wet night across wales, mild and muggy underneath this cloud and rain. temperatures in the mid—teens in celsius. across northern ireland, some clear spells, so cooler here and still a scattering of showers across scotland. now on monday, there are met office weather warnings in force across wales and northern england for heavy rain, around 30 to 40 millimetres, possibly higher rainfall totals with any afternoon embedded thunderstorms, they're possible. but it will dry out and brighten up, i think, for wales and for south west england towards the end of the day. still some bright spells across east anglia, sunny spells and showers for northern ireland and scotland. it's still rather windy in the south, but tuesday, a much calmer—looking day of weather. that system has pushed its way northwards and eastwards into scandinavia. it's largely dry, particularly through the morning. some afternoon showers perhaps breaking out for eastern areas of scotland and northeast england. temperatures more widely rising into the low 20s in celsius. and it will feel more pleasant, of course, with those light winds in the best of the sunshine. and then high pressure builds in as we head through wednesday, which will keep us largely dry. still the possibility of some afternoon showers, but it's keeping all of this low pressure out in the atlantic well at bay. so these systems will be stalled. there will be some sunshine developing on wednesday. watch out for some showers developing, particularly towards north sea—facing coasts. and any showers will be quite slow—moving because of the light winds. but it's starting to feel warmer. i think temperatures towards the south of england in particular will rise into the mid—twenties in celsius, cooler towards the north, maybe some showers at times. this is bbc news. more expert resources have been sent to hawaii, at least 93 people are known to have died, but hundreds remain unaccounted for. it is the deadliest disaster of its kind in the us for more than a century. pressure builds on rishi sunak over small boats crossing the channel after six deaths. and the annual perseid meteor shower has lit up skies across the world. it gives stargazers the chance to see up to 100 shooting stars each hour. and now on bbc news, take me to the opera, peak performance. i've been an opera fan for decades, and i want to share my passion with you. so i'm on a mission to find out how opera is trying to attract
