In hawaii, hasjust given this update. Its a very, very sad day in hawaii. It is devastating. And i know many families on maui are struggling right now as well as many Family Members across the state. We want to send our heartfelt love to them and our prayers to them. I am going to talk with two hats on, from here at the Convention Centre, we set up to accommodate 2,000 people. As the planes were leaving from maui, we realised that some of the people, in fact, a lot of the people that were coming to 0ahu from maui had made their own accommodation. We have a set up here that would accommodate 2,000 people. I want to really thank the team here because terry 0rton from the Convention Centre was here at four oclock in the Morning Setting up. They are doing an incrediblejob. People have been up all night. I really want to thank them for all of the work that they did, the red cross has been here helping us, nicky from the red cross. Thank you to all of those people. John monaghan and jerry gibson had been working with the hotels to make sure when guests get here, that they know which hotels have availability and get them to the hotels. What we also know is that the hotels that had occupancy this morning, most of them do not have that occupancy right now. So that tells us that the people are going straight from the airport and they are finding accommodation and transportation to these resort areas. So that is a good thing. We are prepared here. Tomorrow, we know that more flights will be coming in, actually, buses are coming in right now with people. Efforts now with people. Are under way to help the people efforts are under way to help the people affected. Some of them caught up people affected. Some of them caught up in the fires have been describing their escapes. I was the last one off the dock, when the firestorm came through the trees and took everything with it. And ijust ran out to the beach and ran south. I helped everybody i could on the way. Youve got to know when you can. I got home around four oclock yesterday from work. The smoke in town. My son and his girlfriend and two kids were at the house and we evacuated immediately. No cell phone coverage, no internet, no way to contact the outside world and we got to this side of the island around midnight last night. My wife and dog slept in the parking lot at whole foods, woke up this morning and got on our phones to pictures of our house just down to the slab, nothing but smoke. The winds picked up, everything just flew our way, the apartment complex was right above the Aquatics Centre so we thought we were ok but then the wind came, l gas stations blew up, everything caught fire by the brush and then we just had to evacuate. Cbs correspondent jarred hill has been following the story from new york. 36 was the number that sort of ballooned overnight, really, initially, we heard the reports of six individuals. Now that number at 36. And as you mentioned, because there are so many people that are unaccounted for at this moment, the True Real Destruction and devastation when it comes to loss of life is yet to be known. Also because Officials Say that they have not gotten a chance to really survey the ground the way that they would like to, because roads are closed, because you have, whether its power lines that are down orjust because of the fire getting in the way again, its been difficult to to really get out on the ground and survey the damage. When it comes to the latest information with this, we do know that Tens Of Thousands of people have been evacuated from the island of maui, either to other destinations outside of hawaii or to some of the other islands in hawaii, where we have not seen these types of fires by any means. And there are efforts right now to shelter as many people as possible and also try and make sure that folks can get to a destination where they are safe and have resources. Well, thats a question i was going to ask you, jared, about, i mean, bearing in mind these fires are still ongoing, what support is there able to be offered to the local community . And presumably there are a lot of tourists in the area at the moment as well. Yeah, there were a lot of tourists who were there because this is tourist season. I mean, hawaii in its own right is just a location that a lot of people like to fly to because of the beauty there. So on one hand, you do have a number of shelters that have been set up on some of the islands that are close to maui. There have been buses taking people to either shelters or to airports to try and get them off. And from what weve been hearing, airlines have also been regulating their fares to make sure that people can buy a ticket to get off if they can get through the processes. Weve heard that theres been really long lines at some of these airports, understandably so, with so many people trying to get out at one time. One of the things that we are also waiting to see here is whether there will be a federal disaster declaration for this part of hawaii that would free up some federal resources that could come in and help individuals sort of in the longer term, whether they might need somewhere to stay because their homes have burned down, something weve heard a lot of, or if there are other loans and things that can help with the Rebuilding Process. But according to some of the officials, that could still take years. That Rebuilding Process could take years. And of course, jarred, as were looking at those pictures taken from helicopters and the wide scale destruction, those fires are still burning. Yeah, yeah, the fires are still burning. One of the things that weve heard here is that because of how strong the winds were at the beginning of this, helicopters that would ordinarily come in and douse the flames with water could not do that. And so that allowed for those fires to really spread much more quickly and more robustly than they ordinarily would have. Now, there is the ability to come in and start that process, but its going to be a long process because of how dry some of that vegetation is there on the ground. New pictures have emerged of the moment a candidate in ecuador s forthcoming president ial election was shot. Fernando villavicencio has campaigned against corruption and gangs. He was attacked as he left a Campaign Event in the capital, quito, on wednesday. He is one of the few candidates to allege links between organised crime and government officials in ecuador. A State Of Emergency has been declared following the assassination. The first round of the president ial election is scheduled to take place on 20 august. Mr villavicencio was one of eight candidates in the election, although he was not the frontrunner. Just a warning these are the pictures of the attack coming up. The retailer said it was unable to find Emergency Investment to save its 400 shops across the uk. Our correspondents has the latest. 0ur Correspondents has the latest. We have learned that wilko founded in leicester has some 408 Stores Across the uk and has gone into administration. We knew the company was in trouble, they said a few days ago they had given themselves a better buying time to find a buyer and sought a rescue deal. Is this morning the ceo has written to the 12,000 employees essentially saying we ran out of time, we did what we could but, unfortunately we are unable to find a buyer and save the business without it going into administration. So this morning, pwc had been appointed as administrators for the company. What follows now is an effort to save as manyjobs and stores as possible. They could well be a buyer that decides to buy it from administration but, as i say, the future is uncertain for not only one of the most well known brands on the high street up and down the uk but also for those 12,000 employees whose jobs and careers rely on such a well known brand. Do you have any sense as to why this has happened . What was it about wilko that has made it unable to avoid administration . With company collapses, there is almost always several things going on. Wilko has filled a gap that woolworths created when it went bust that one stop shop from pick and mix to homeware to diy. But the offer has been superseded by companies that essentially do similar or the same things but at a cheaper cost. Also, a lot of the wilkinson is stores where large units on the high street with plenty of people now stopping at retail parks. And there have been problems from retailers having from high interest rates, high costs, having to pay suppliers as well as low Consumer Confidence on the high street itself. A worrying time for the 12,000 employees and for anyone on the high street that has seen several units close and doesnt want to see wilko is ago. An estimated 7. 6 Million People are waiting to start treatment at the start ofjune up from may. 0ur Health Editor give us more. There has been a consistent increase during the pandemic and since then a backlog built above postponed treatment and prospering operations and appointments. It was beginning to flatten out but wasnt falling. And then we had the strikes in various parts of the Nhs In England and these figures are for england. Nhs england has said 100,000 postponed procedures and appointments injune contributed to this increase. But its really hard to make any link directly between the two because clearly, hospitals across the systems are struggling with a backlog and is a key pledge of the government to cut this waiting list and certainly after plateauing a bit, it has carried ongoing up. I think hospitals are saying its getting harder and harder to bring down their Waiting Lists as well as coping with all the new patients who need treatment. Its almost hard to get your head around the number, 7. 6 Million People waiting for treatment at the end ofjune. Almost eliminated in the case of two yearweights. But almost eliminated in the case of two year weights. But others would argue a year or two before the pandemic, the idea of waiting two years for a Hip Replacement or Knee Replacement or Cataract Surgery would have been seen as unthinkable. But they started building up so for some patients, it is usually frustrating and disappointing because these include consulted appointments and they have waited a long time and then they are postponed. To take you quickly to the nigerian take you quickly to the nigerian capital, we have been telling you this morning that there is a crucial summit being held there today. Leaders from e. Ecowas meet after the Military Coup. We have been watching over the last ten minutes or so, leaders arriving, going into the building, lots to discuss. You will remember there was initially an ultimatum given to the soldiers who seized power. That did not end the Military Coup so i think the move now, the talk now is for some sort of diplomatic solution, a diplomatic approach. Leaders from the Economic Community of West African States meeting today to discuss the situation in niger and hoping there will be some sort of diplomatic solution to the crisis. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Lets look at some other stories making news. The uks biggest mortgage lender, halifax is set to sharply cut rates on some of its fixed mortgage deals, which could potentially ease pressure on some homeowners. They will reduce rates by up to 0. 71 Percentage Points from friday, with a five year fixed deal priced at 5. 39 from 6. 10 . Northern irelands Senior Police officers will be questioned by politicians later about the data breach which led to details about all of the countrys Police Officers and civilian staff accidentally being made public. The information was taken down within two hours, but there are fears that it could still be used by dissident republicans to mount new attacks. Charlotte gallagher reports from belfast. I think this meeting of the Policing Board is going to be really tense. Everyone is acknowledging that this is a really serious situation. The names of 10,000 Police Officers and staff published online, and that includes, of course, Police Officers working in the most sensitive of areas, including Police Officers that were working with m15, the British Security service. So politicians sitting on that Policing Board will want answers to some key questions. Firstly, how on earth could this happen . Secondly, how are the police force going to ensure that this can never happen again . And crucially, what is the police force doing to ensure the safety of Police Officers in Northern Ireland . We know, sara, that theyve updated their Security Advice for officers. And in the past thats included things like checking under cars to make sure theres no explosive devices and also varying routes to and from work. And the police federation, which represents officers here, say they have been inundated with calls from worried officers and their families because when you speak to Police Officers here, they know its a worrying situation at the best of times. One woman told the bbc that shes not even told her children yet that shes a Police Officer because she doesnt know who they will tell. 0ne politician here said that a Police Officer told him theyve not been able to go to his mothers house for ten years and sit down for a meal because of the situation. Others have said that theyve moved various times so they feel safe. So its undoubtedly a really scary time for some Police Officers because in the past officers have been targeted. Around 300 were murdered during the troubles. In february this year, there was an Attempted Murder of a senior detective in Northern Ireland. As we were showing you, a summit is going underway as leaders from ecowas meet to tackle the Military Coup in niger. The organisation appears to have backed away from an ultimatum it gave to the coup leaders in the day following the takeover to Restore Democratic rule or face all necessary means. So what can we expect from the summit . I asked our correspondent who is following events from nigeria. Heads of states are meeting today in abuja, nigerias capital, and to discuss the developments in niger. Weve seen the Military Junta turn back several african union, United Nations and envoys that have tried to mediate the crisis and restore ousted president Mohamed Bazoum to power. So we are expecting them to come up with new direction on what they would do following the expiration of the ultimatum they gave the junta last sunday. And this could go many ways, although they had said they would continue to explore diplomatic and political resolutions, but they have not ruled out a military intervention. What do we know about president bazoum and the conditions that hes being kept in . Well, sara, the United Nations secretary general, Antonio Guterres issued a statement late yesterday saying that he has received a concerning news about president bazoums state of health and the conditions he and his Family Members are kept in in captivity of the Military Junta. We understand that he has not had access to his doctors nor medication nor food supplies, that hes actually run out of stock. We also understand that he has not had contact with, physical contact with anybody since last friday. So these are really very concerning conditions that the president is being kept under.
