so a little cool, but not too bad in the sunshine, quite a bit of strength in it this time of year. high—pressure bringing in the quiet weather stays with us towards the end of the week as well for most, but there mayjust be a a few patches of rain running into the northern isles for a time. otherwise, the same sort of story. quite a bit of cloud around, a few bright and sunny spells again, the best likely across southern and western areas, and temperatures not changing much either, 10—15. there will be some changes into the weekend. thick cloud will be on the way, may be some rain or showers working on from the north and west. thank you very much, chris. that's all for me. now from bbc one, we join the news team is where you are. goodbye. hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm gavin ramjaun. can manchester city strike first and gain the advantage in their champions league semifinal? real madrid are at the etihad tonight. and back to the drawing board — emma raducanu is on the hunt for a new coach as the french open and wimbledon approach. and novak djokovic gets the green light to play at wimbledon, after organisers officially confirm unvaccinated players can compete. also coming up in the programme: after 19 years, 71 caps and countless trophies, anita asante announces her retirement. keep watching to find out who she woud love to manage when she hangs up the boots. ten years since he hung up the gloves, ricky hatton tells us he wants to inspire others who've struggled with their mental health. hello, there, and welcome to sportsday. it's the trophy that has so far eluded pep guardiola at manchester city, but tonight they have a golden opportunity to put one foot in the champions league final when they take on spanish leaders real madrid at the etihad in the first leg of their semifinal. a huge match ahead and we can speak our correspondent andy swiss who is there for us. this is a match that pep guardiola has looked at in the histories between the two sides. city will perhaps go into this is favourites? that's right. city are at the marginal favourites with the bookmakers. they are having a great season, leading the premier league, and will have fond memories of the last time they played them in the champions league two years ago, when they won that encounter. john scales and kyle walker are both injury doubts for city. bags of world—class talent still at city's disposal. there is a lot of pressure on them, because for all of their domestic success, for all the premier league titles, the champions league title is the one day so sorely once, it would cement their status among the european elites. they came so close last year when they were beaten by chelsea in the final. in the shape of real madrid, they are up against the most successful team in the champions league history. they have won it 13 times. this is the tenth time in the last 12 years they have beenin time in the last 12 years they have been in the semifinal, which is an extraordinary record of consistency. it is a big challenge for city tonight, but their manager says his team will not be overawed. if we have to compete with the history. — if we have to compete with the history, we don't have any chance because _ history, we don't have any chance because they are better. history speaks — because they are better. history speaks for itself. we have to real madrid team who will also be full of confidence. there are 15 points clear in the spanish lake and can clinch the title there this weekend, so domestically they're going very nicely. they are not quite perhaps the real madrid team of a few years ago there were so dominant for a spell in the champions league, but lots of world—class talent. all eyes will be on karim benzema, who is having a spectacular season in the champions league, scoring a hat—trick in their last match, a hat—trick in the quarterfinals against chelsea. at the age of 3a, he just seems to be getting better and better. luka modric, at the age of 36, is having an incredible season. he is pulling the strings in midfield. there is so much world—class talent at the disposal of real madrid. city will have lots and lots of confidence. carlo ancelotti is a wily character. he has seen so many big champions league matches, champions league nights like this, he has won trophies all over the continent. they are up against one of the great tacticians in european football. city will be desperately hoping they can get some sort of advantage to take to madrid next week. they will have the fans behind them tonight, and they will be looking to make the most of that home advantage before they head to madrid next weekend. thank you. well, real madrid really do have pedigree in this competition. they have reached the semifinals ten times in the last 12 years — some record — and they have the all—time record for winning europe's showpiece event. city boss pep guardiola says they need to have "two exceptional games". let's get the view from inside the ground now from tonight's match commentators on radio five live. here'sjohn murray, who is with none other than alan shearer. this is where we will be smaller than hereford, but have beaten the likes ofjuventus and bayern munich on their way to the last four. the liverpool manager and captain told the media today that they won't be caught by surprise. there might have been a little advantage in the last two games, maybe bayern munich underestimated them, but that never happened to us, especially after these four games, there is no chance launched today to investigate ways to reduce the risk of dementia in footballers. the brainhope study, led by dr willie stewart at the university of glasgow — aims to recruit over 100 former footballers to take part with calls already to issue a health warning to current players at all levels. in my opinion footballs should be sold with a health warning on them that repeated heading of the ball could lead to long—term brain damage and dementia. today, we launch a major study looking at brain health and former professional footballers and former professional footballers and comparing that to normal ageing. the reason we are launching this study is that there is evidence in the last few years shows that former footballers have a very high risk of dementia and degenerative diseases, and all the evidence we have points to that being as a result of head injuries and head impacts in the game, particularly that will be heading in football. to reflect on this, i think we should be telling people when they buy apples that is the risk that they could charm have long term problems with their brain if they had the ball too much, and that should have a warning on the ball at the point—of—sale. that should have a warning on the ball at the point—of—sale. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today. oldham athletic say they intend to ban fans who invaded the pitch in protest during their 2—1 defeat to salford city on saturday. the match had to be finished behind closed doors. oldham lost 2—1 and became the first former premier league side to drop out of the football league. zak hardaker has rejoined leeds in superleague after leaving wigan last week. the england international signed a short term contract with the club where he made his wimbledon now and that decision by the tournament organisers to ban russian and belarusian players from this summer's competition. it's a move that has been criticised by the governing bodies of both the men's and women's professional tennis, as well as russian president vladimir putin, who says the decision is "discrimination based on nationality". we considered our options in the context of the continuing aggression in ukraine from russia as well as thinking about the safety and security of the event and players, we concluded the only viable option was to decline entries from russian and belarusian competitors. i would say it though was a decision we took with real sadness and we absolutely regret the impact that this will have on the players are directly affected, but in this instance it was the right decision for us to make for wimbledon. let's take a closer look at what exactly has been said today. our tennis correspondent is russell fuller. they were reiterating that few from last week, when the decision was first announced that it was the only viable option, a very complex decision that members of the all england club board took. they know they have faced opposition from the likes of novak djokovic that one politics interfered with sport, it usually doesn't end up well. a russian player has described it as discriminatory, so to have the menstrual and women's tour. the chairman was asked if wimbledon would be asked to make a moral judgment on future conflicts in future years, and he said this is different because of the condemnation from over 140 that in parts we had a few showers, nothing significant rain wise, so the dry team has continued, in fact still parts of england and wales have had less than 50% of their average rainfall, only scotland having seen the average for this april. with high—pressure remaining for the rest of april, for most it stays dry, just the far north—west where we may see some rain before the end of april. but some sunshine today we had across northern ireland, more than yesterday, and under the clear skies overnight it will be chilly here as well with the touch of grass frost around. any remaining showers will fizzle out and the showers will melt away. the priest will bring cloud on shore to the eastern coasts, but for most it will be another chilly night with a touch of grass frost just about anywhere, and in the glens of scotland a touch of frost my morning. some nastiness, too, to clear away first thing. otherwise, quite bright again, plenty of dry weather, plenty of sunshine. on show song —— strong sunshine when it does come out. that breeze on the south continuing notjust for the south of england before the channel islands, as well. for most of us, the weather is quite static with little wind to move the cloud around, so it will tend to get trapped in the early morning mist and this will take awhile to clear away. we have some rain in the north with a weak weather front on thursday, but it is to detail that would be difficult to pin down. for most, still a dry and bright day and feeling warm when the sun chang comes out. have a very similar story heading into friday, by that stage we are starting to see the rain approaching towards the west, with the change giving in the north with a weak weather front on thursday, but it is to detail that would be difficult to pin down. for most, still a dry and bright day and hello, i'm ros atkins. welcome to outside source. the un secretary—general has travelled to moscow in search of a breakthrough in the war in ukraine. we
