of archibishop desmond tutu — a further memorial service is to be held in cape town today. more unaltered a's stories coming out of the top of the hour. now on bbc news, your world: life at 50 degrees centigrade. in episode three, we see how lives have been dramatically altered in iraq and the gulf by global warming. if you don't live here, and you're not affected by it every day, you forget that it's happening. but it is. i'm already hot. i'm not even outside. normally, i like to start my days off with a dog walk. come on, lily. we need to make it super early so that my little fur baby can walk on the ground without burning himself. are your paws 0k? i think it was around 56 this year, as supposedly hot as it got, but it feels like 60! yeah, it's hot! did you get dehydrated? it sucks the life out of you. that's it, you're like this... and then that's it, you're just like this. let's go home, it's out. i'm done, girl. today, i have a really special guest. this is... hi, guys. it's hin! i think in my line of work, when i'm doing a lot of content creation, i can see when the heat does affect me. when you do have the best light on a day to be able to film, it is absolutely too hot to do it outside. so, since this is a compilation episode, i'm going to make sure i bring coffee to everyone because we don't have to go have coffee. the hours between 11:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon are no—go times of being outdoors. the heat impacts your life in ways that you don't necessarily anticipate. and a day like today, it makes things that are supposed to be a minute long and hour long. yes. yeah, let's sit down, my love. do you want the ac? one of the things that i was not anticipating when i did finally have children was now i had this tiny little being that needed to be protected from the sun. all right, let's get going. and because i had rear—facing car seats, the ac unit actually never touched his car seat, so we would turn the car on 30 minutes prior to an outing, put the ice packs into his car seat to cool it down before i could place him in it, and we had a tube that would extend from the front ac into the backjust to make sure that we could get him enough air conditioning in a rear—facing car seat. and that is the reality for all parents here. push the door! push, push, push. do you want to try the mango with strawberry? i would spend my entire life living in kuwait, but i did have a bit of time when i got to live in the states and i go out on my bike, and go outside and make tree houses, and i guess i did want that for my children. i think there is a common misconception that you are able to split your time between different countries if you are kuwaiti. that has never been my reality. that the assumption you are just able to leave is not possible for everybody. this is the hottest i have ever seen kuwait. it is getting to the point where it is unbearable and i think everything about living here is hostile sometimes. you like swimming inside or outside more? inside, why do you like inside? do your feet hurt when you walk on the grass outside? yeah. it concerns me that the only life that my children have known has been in scorching heat. they want to be kids and go to the playground. and they will beg to go all day, and then we will finally break and take them, and it will be so unbearable that they will be begging to go back home. the absolute best invention in the world. the only way to stop it. like, you can't even feel it now. there's absolutely no way to survive here without ac and i think that what's really disturbing about that is that you're cooling your little section but you're heating up outside and so we are in this awful, awful cycle of trying to cool ourselves down but also heating up the country even more as we go on. i think that we've gotten a little fatigued with the idea of climate change. you've got to stop using straws to save the turtles and turn off your lights in your bathroom, when you leave the house, and it gets a little tiring but the big picture is what it means to live here. and i do worry and these are some of my largest fears is that my children are so young right now and these are probably the best days of their life, in terms of weather. if you don't live here and you're not affected by it every day, you forget that it's happening but it is and it is terrifying. if we are looking into the future, i don't see how much longer we can consider kuwait habitable. red hello, there. today we have seen a band _ red hello, there. today we have seen a band of— red hello, there. today we have seen a band of rain— red hello, there. today we have seen a band of rain moving north—eastwards across the uk and a band of rain moving north-eastwards across the uk and in the new year — north-eastwards across the uk and in the new year still _ north-eastwards across the uk and in the new year still unsettled, - north-eastwards across the uk and in the new year still unsettled, some i the new year still unsettled, some rain at times accompanied by some stronger wind. the main feature of the weather is just how mild it is going to be throughout. over the next few days in england, we could see temperatures reaching 17 celsius. bear in mind the average for this time in england is around 8 degrees. so we could be setting a few records in the days ahead. and as we head into the early part of this evening, still 15 degrees in the south—east of england, in london. across the north—east of scotland, around eight celsius. here we have had the rain a bit longer, it has been a bit heavier as well, clearing away from mainland scotland, heading towards the northern isles, may be a few breaks in the cloud, as we head further into the night the cloud tends to thicken and we will get some rain coming into western parts of the uk in particular. with the winds from the south or south—west, it is going to be very mild tonight, much milder in the north—east of scotland than it was last night for sure. we start though tomorrow with a lot of cloud around. we've got this rain too, going to push its way eastwards, not much rain at all for these inside a inland or scotland, we may well see some sunshine coming through in eastern scotland and north—east england, more rain eventually in the north west of england. these are the temperatures on thursday, we could make 17 degrees by the stage in east anglia and the south—east, and much milder than today in the north—east of scotland. as we move into the new year, new year's eve, we are looking at some rain to start across scotland and northern ireland, that will tend to pull away, skies may brighten and may be a bit of sunshine coming through, but it is telling dryer, and still mild, not quite as mild perhaps across northern parts of scotland, but still 16 or 17 toward south—eastern areas of england. it is so mild because the winds are coming all the way from the tropics, south to south—westerly winds ahead of these weather fronts, south—westerly winds ahead of these weatherfronts, which south—westerly winds ahead of these weather fronts, which are focusing the rain, which is mainly going to be across most —— across more north—western parts of the country as we head into the new year. we start with some exceptionally mild air across the uk, overnight into new year's day. still some rain around, mainly across western areas, and the bulk of that across north—western parts of england, northern ireland and scotland. it all tends to push away, skies should brighton with some sunshine and a few showers. still quite windy on saturday, there is very mild south to south—westerly winds, with highs of 16 or 17 celsius. this is bbc news broadcasting to viewers in the uk and around the globe. i'mjane i'm jane hill. our top stories: borisjohnson says up to 90% of those who are the most seriously ill with coronavirus in the uk have not had a booster vaccine and urges everyone to getjabbed. the overwhelming majority of people who are currently ending up in intensive care in our hospitals are people who are not boosted. nicola sturgeon rules out any further coronavirus restrictions in scotland, but continues to urge caution as cases rise further. record numbers of covid infections are recorded in the us and france, as the omicron variant continues to spread. people in the uk are left waiting days for covid pcr testing
