programmes from around the world as leaders prepare to gather in glasgow to confront the challenges and seek out the solutions to our climate crisis. as for the barrier itself, it has been standing guard over london for some a0 years. it has been called into action nearly 200 times. this last summer was both one of the warmest and wettest on record. the authorities, for the first time ever, instituted an extreme heat warning. yet we also had a month's rain falling in a single day, bringing much of the capital to a standstill. and whether it is london, or lagos, or bangkok, rising sea levels and flood waters are just one part of this immense climate emergency. the bbc has been examining whether the uk, along with other leading countries, are ready to make the commitment required, and then make good on those promises. the science is clear. save our planet — get climate under control. climate change. the climate emergency is the defining issue of our time. scientists, environmentalists and campaigners have been stressing the severity of climate change for decades. and if we don't take serious action soon, we will continue to see more devastation across the planet and, to put it bluntly, we are running out of time, fast. climate change is a deeply political issue. country leaders have to work together to stop the planet getting hotter. so this year, in november, almost 200 leaders are meeting in glasgow to discuss climate change. this event is called cop26. cop26 stands for conference of the parties. this conference in particular is seen as especially urgent because the planet is still getting hotter. right now may be our last chance to put the world back on track. but let's go back a bit. this was the moment of the paris agreement was signed. it was a big deal. back in 2015, paris hosted cop21. almost every country across the globe agreed to limit global warming. each party agreed to make their own concrete
