to reassure them that was not true, that he knew donald trump was not going to attack china, and that he had a duty to tell them that to avoid any misunderstanding between superpowers which will end about what the army is doing. what's the labour party been saying about this issue? i'm sure you could almost guess. they are saying this is an example of terrible, gross, utterly incompetent government. the second part charges the government should have seen this coming, notjust the petrol shortages, have seen this coming, notjust the petrolshortages, but have seen this coming, notjust the petrol shortages, but on some of the supply problems in shops. essentially, their argument is the haulage industry had been warning governments about the potential shortfall in drivers, some of it reaction in europe. have a look at this headline from french tv station bfm, and it is asking the question, " the army to the rescue." france's furyk — — foreign affairs minister says ?... that's clearly not the view shared in europe. let me take that second part. i think it's been clear for some time that notjust in europe, but pretty much most of britain's allies rightly or wrongly, i think they decided that brexit was just a terrible mistake right from the start. they thought the boat in 2016 was a hopeless goal of terrible geostrategic mistake. what you've been seeing in this coverage of the uk is the sense of, well, we told you so, and this is what's happening. it's exactly what we warned about. of course, that would come a surprise to most people living in the uk. i'm not sure how aware people are of how the uk is a scene from the outside, and that's a sense... that brexit is a bad idea. i should say here in the uk, the government said brexit has been a source of this, but it also claims a shortage of european workers will push wages up. one or other thing, this view outside the uk that brexit has been a disaster, but it's not that much of a debate here because the main opposition party, they don't really want to make this about brexit, partly because they supported the trade deal. they want to make this much more about government incompetence. thanks so much for with russia. russia has reported its highest ever daily conversant death toll since the start of the pandemic, with more than 850 fatalities recorded in the past 24 hours. according to official figures since mid—july, close to 800 people have died each day and these numbers almost certainly under counted. the spike is being blamed on the low uptake of vaccines, just a 28% of the population has received the vaccine despite it being made mandatory this summer. and research showed 62% of people in russia do not want the vaccine. this is also despite russia becoming the first country in the world back in august 2028 to approve a covid—19 vaccine. its very own at sputnik v. let's go to moscow and hear from the bbc*s richard galpin. the situation is serious. russia hasjust recorded its highest ever daily death toll since the pandemic began all that time ago. 852 people have died over the past 24 hours in russia and more than a total of 200 other people have died since the pandemic. russia effectively has now become the worst hit country in europe. why is this happening? so far only about 20% of the population have taken the covid vaccine, the sputnik vaccine, the one produced by the russians. it seems that there is a lot of vaccine hesitancy about it, they do not trust the sputnik vaccine and of course that then is a big problem for trying to bring down the epidemic in russia. now also, people do not seem to be particularly worried about covid and they think it is like flu and they are not really taking the kind of actions which you would have thought to avoid getting infected. the government has not really had any kind of campaigns trying to get people to be vaccinated. it seems to have all gone very quiet on that front. let's ta ke let's take a closer look at the issue of vaccine hesitancy in russia. an epidemiologist at moscow's issue of vaccine hesitancy in russia. an epidemiologist at moscow's highest issue of vaccine hesitancy in russia. an epidemiologist at moscow's highest at issue of vaccine hesitancy in russia. an epidemiologist at moscow's highest at school issue of vaccine hesitancy in russia. an epidemiologist at moscow's highest at school of economics university says vaccine hesitancy is quite prevalent in russia. there are anti—vaxxers here and some journalists and influential people, even medical people, dance to the acts to faxesmagnitude. until last august, the moscow correspondent was a russian resident until she was barred from the country last month and she has been tweeting today about getting a pfizerjab. she says... i'm pleased to say sarah joins us alive now. you had received when you are in russia at the sputnikjab, talkers through this idea of vaccine hesitancy and why russians are so low when it comes to taking up their very own vaccine. it is low when it comes to taking up their very own vaccine.— very own vaccine. it is not a news sto in very own vaccine. it is not a news story in that _ very own not a news story in that sense. all at the - very own vaccine. it is not a newsl story in that sense. all at the time i was covering the covid crisis in russia you can see how residents but most russians were to get any kind of vaccine, at that time it was primarily sputnik vaccine was available. a couple of things i think at play, first and foremost thatis think at play, first and foremost that is the kind of complacency about the covid pandemic in the first place, so the idea that it is dangerous, the idea it is highly infectious russians are generally pretty fatalistic, that is one thing to bear in mind, but also the messaging they have been getting from the very beginning of this pandemic as it is not that serious, so even official figures would be playing things down and just looking at life, for example life in moscow, apart from a very short period at the beginning of the pandemic when there was an extremely strict lockdown, ever since that was lifted for political and economic reasons life in russia and particularly in moscow has been almost normal so you would live life not really thinking at all about to be covid pandemic. in that context, it is hard to see why people would rush to get it vaccine, especially if they are slightly nervous about how effective it is and indeed potentially dangerous. because again, russian immediate right at the beginning were really working against, messaging against other country's vaccines and that has had an impact on people's trust in the russian it vaccine too. we on people's trust in the russian it vaccine too-— vaccine too. we are seeing such a hiih vaccine too. we are seeing such a high death _ vaccine too. we are seeing such a high death toll, _ vaccine too. we are seeing such a high death toll, the _ but an interesting point of view from our correspondent who herself had the sputnik v vaccine. that is the russian vaccine. we will turn to the uk and the leader of the opposition labour party says included the late singer aaliyah who kelly briefly, and illegally married in 1994 when was just 15 years old 7 years before she died in a plane crash. ben zand is a journalist who spoke to many victims in his documentary on r kelly. remember when i made that documentary and thought this must be a murky world when things are confusing and straightaway i met someone who said they were at that wedding with r kelly and he also produced an album with aaliyah, it was not like he was hiding his ways, and it seems like if you just dig a bit under the surface, everybody knew what was happening. he was taken to court in the early 2000, it took a six years to get a sentence. there was a tape of him having sex with a 14 rod girl. i have spoken to women who interacted with that girl at the time and he got acquitted because eventually the gal did not testify and they could not say beyond reasonable doubt it was in the video. ——14—year—old girl. there was a lot of evidence, a lot of people knew what was happening and ultimately money prevailed and he got away with it. many of the allegations heard in the trial were first laid out in the 2019 documentary surviving r kelly. here's one of the executive producers on why it took for the victims* claims to be taken seriously. a lot of the women said they didn't want to come out because they thought he will believe me, because thatis thought he will believe me, because that is what we have been told as a culture, no one will believe you and then we are often nicked him ashamed. so i do believe that of course this is a win for all those who have been sexually abused and it is a victory for everyone. —— often victims shamed. it is a victory for women and men of colour as well because it happens to men as well. this was r kelly's second criminal trial on sex charges. in 2008, he was cleared in an online child exploitation case. the bbc*s chi chi izundu travelled to chicago for that trial. it is really difficult for the black women that have been involved in this case to come forward, mainly because of the people around r kelly who helped if you like protect his reputation. when i travelled to chicago back in 2008, there was very much the premise i was given that he was someone that they were really proud of and they knew that he would bring great things to chicago because of his talent and the songs he was putting out there and people were really proud to know that r kelly was from that part of america. things changed and quite dramatically with the surviving r kelly documentary where a number of women came forward and as they say, there is always at safety in numbers and the fact that this group of women were willing to go on camera and detail in a graphic detail what they had gone through at his hands, in his home, i think was the turning point. but it did take a lot of time. that is the end of our addition of a outside source. thanks for being with us, lots more tomorrow, goodbye for now. after
