Good evening. Injust a good evening. In just a few minutes, we are going to bejoining viewers on Bbc One with the latest national news with sophie raworth. But first, its one of the oldest rivalries in football. In less than an hour, England And Scotlands men will face Each Other in their Euro 2020 Match. Thousands of fans have travelled to the capital to savour the atmosphere in the build up to the game. Its the first time the mens teams have met in a major tournament for a quarter of a century. An England Win will see them qualify for the Knockout Stage, while scotland are seeking to keep their hopes of progressing alive. Come down to london, great atmosphere, everybody seems to be getting on great. Nothing to complain. 31, 31. Youve gone 3 1, im thinking 2 1. But its going to be good, its going to be good. England fans the pubs, the restaurants, everywhere that ive been absolutely fantastic. Amazing. Hopefully its a really good game, many goals. All for england Come On, gareth, do it Come On lets go. The Liberal Democrats are celebrating a stunning by Election Victory, after winning a seat that has been conservative for almost half a century. Sarah green won Chesham And Amersham in Buckinghamshire Byjust over 8,000 votes, overturning a tory majority of 16,000. Speaking to our political correspondent, the lib dem leader, Sir Ed Davey, says the conservatives Blue Wall of southern seats is now crumbling. I think theres a Shock Wave through british politics. This wasntjust another Liberal Democrat by Election Victory, it was one of our best ever. And on the swing that we achieved, dozens of conservative seats would fall to the Liberal Democrats the next election, and its notjust a one off. If you look at the local elections in places like oxfordshire and cambridgeshire, we now run them for the first time ever. We took lots of seats off the conservatives in places like Hertfordshire And Surrey and wiltshire, and so traditionally, Liberal Democrats have gained seats at a general election after weve gone forward at the local elections, and weve been doing that, so the Blue Wall is under serious threat from the Liberal Democrats. You say its under serious threat, but that is to some extent potentially. Youre making some Progress And Youll be delighted, but from an extraordinarily low base. Youre still at seven points in the national polls. The conservatives are up there around a0. Isnt there a danger of hubris, as there was with you during the Brexit Referendum . No, we won this seat even when the tories were high in the opinion polls, and i think they will go down. I think Borisjohnson Isnt as loved as he would like to think. He may have a vaccination bounce, but on the doorsteps in Chesham And Amersham, there were lots of traditional conservatives telling us they dont like borisjohnson, they dont think hes a sort of traditional, decent tory prime minister. And ive had conservative voters on the doorstep saying they wont vote conservative while borisjohnson is the leader. Youve talked a bit about borisjohnson, but isnt this also perhaps about brexit . This was a remain seat, you seem to be doing quite well in those other southern seats where people perhaps have been conservative but voted remain. Is there still a hangover from brexit, or is this about wider discontent . Well, i came here 16 times, i campaigned a lot in this By Election. I talked to hundreds of people. Brexit came up on just a handful of doors. What did come up was the fact that people felt taken for granted by the conservatives, they felt ignored, they felt they werent listening to, and it wasntjust on issues like hs2 but on planning. That was a really big issue, actually, the Planning Reforms of the government, which conservative mps are worried about. Theresa may has said borisjohnson s Planning Reforms will mean the wrong homes in the wrong places, and that has actually resonated amongst tory voters. They feel that their interests arent being catered for, they feel theyre not being listened to, and they like the liberal Democrat Community style of politics, where, as a localist party, they feel we are more in touch with them. Tonight, the England Scotland Showdown at wembley their Euro 2020 Clash is about to get under way. Singing. The Tartan Army has descended on london, many of them without tickets. More than 22,000 fans will be inside the stadium its the first time England And Scotland mens sides have met in a major tournament since euro 96. Its a huge game. Massive game. Biggest of the lot. Biggest game of my life. 31. Youre going 3 1. Im thinking 2 1. Its going to be good, going to be good. Im Pitch Side at wembley where the players have arrived for the clash that fans have been waiting for far longer than anyone expected. Also on the programme tonight. Cheering smashing a Blue Wall in buckinghamshire a stunning by Election Victory for the lib dems as they take a seat thats been tory for almost 50 years. More Summer Uncertainty as italy announces all visitors from britain must be tested and quarantine for five days. And the british woman who saved her Twin Sister from a Crocodile Attack in mexico describes their ordeal. I was beating it on its snout and it grabbed my wrist, my arm. So i had to beat it off with the other. And im martine croxall. Join us for the papers at 10 30pm and 11 30pm tonight for an in Depth Look at all of the front pages on the Bbc News channel. Good evening. Less than an hour to go now before England And Scotland face Each Other for the first time at a mens major tournament for quarter of a century. The Euro 2020 Match has huge implications for both sides england will qualify for the Knockout Stage with a win, while scotland need a victory to keep their hopes alive in the competition. Lets go straight to our Sports Correspondent Natalie pirks, whos at wembley. Natalie . Well, sophie, the Weather Toda has natalie . Well, sophie, the Weather Today has been natalie . Well, sophie, the Weather Today has been appalling, natalie . Well, sophie, the Weather Today has been appalling, but natalie . Well, sophie, the Weather Today has been appalling, but the L Today has been appalling, but the atmosphere inside here is electric. Like you said, just under an hour to go until kick off. Both sets of fans know exactly whats at stake. England could qualify for the last 16 with a win, they are looking to build on that composed performance in the 1 0 win against croatia. Scotland meanwhile lost 2 0 to the Czech Republic and know that a defeat here today would leave their hopes are little wobbly, although not necessarily terminal. Much is riding on this for both sides, and if you look at the ties between the nation and the history, it adds up to an in encounter with a special edge. For these oldest of footballing rivals, the euros has brought mixed fortunes. But for fans, the wait is finally over. Bagpipes skirl. The Weather Hasnt dampened the spirits of the travelling Tartan Army. Outnumbered they may be, but outsung, never . Yes, sir i can boogie. But i need a certain song. Scotland have not won at wembley in 22 years but confidence, like the beer, is in good supply for both sets of supporters. The support we got down here, its about 30,000. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant, for what . The biggest game in our lives, i will tell you. 31. You are going 3 1, im thinking 2 1. Its going to be good, going to be good. Take over wembley again, well not be taking the goalposts home with us this time. Whatever happens, england is going to win. Archive England Meet Scotland at wembley. I its no wonder the Sporting Rivalry runs deep. Its the oldest fixture in international football. Bobbyjohnston shoots, the ball rebounds, but riley is there to finish the job. England and scotland are 1 1. Since 1872, there have been some memorable results for both sides. Gascoigne. Brilliant. Yes tonight sees the 100th competitive meeting between the nations, for scotland, it too often ends in defeat. Now is the time to flip the script. I wouldnt say underdogs, i would say massive underdogs. Its here, its at wembley. England are a great team, theyve had a great start to this tournament. Everything is again scotland in a way. But sometimes that is the way we like it, you know . No one is expecting anything other than the Tartan Army. England know another Win Tonight will cement their spot in the last 16. Gareth southgate more than understands the significance but wants his team to play the game, not the occasion. When we were growing up, the Home Internationals were one of the few games you saw live at the end of the season. And England Scotland every year was a massive occasion. Now its played less regularly, obviously, lots of the players are friends within their clubs. We know the rivalry. But i think, i certainly havent felt the need to build that up with the players. I want them to approach it like any other game of Football And Focus on playing well. A win for Scotland Tonight would breathe life into their quest. Wales have all but booked their place in the next round. Which Home Nation Willjoin them . Scotlands men have endured a 23 year wait to be in a major tournament, and Theirfans Year wait to be in a major tournament, and their fans are relishing being back in the big time, but scotlands First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has said the virus doesnt care about football, and has urged the thousands travelling down to london to stick to the rules and be careful. Our Scotland Correspondent Lorna Gordon is with some fans in glasgow for us tonight. Laura. Yes, Auld Enemy clashes are always a big deal on and off the pitch, and thousands are enjoying the sunshine, gathering in this covert secure area in glasgow to watch the game which takes place in just in glasgow to watch the game which takes place injust under an hour. Thousands more have travelled to london, many without tickets, and Nicola Sturgeon is urging them not to exacerbate the covid situation. Lorna gordon, Bbc News, glasgow. Because of covid restrictions, wembley can only be 25 full, and the record books on englands side. They have lost to scotland just once since 1985. But fans without tickets are able to watch the match in special fan zones. Danny savage is at unofficial Fan Site for us now in newcastle. Danny . Quite an atmosphere here in the centre of newcastle this evening, about 700 fans behind us, all having table service, most have to wear masks as well if they Go Out and about. But if there is one thing they expect tonight, it is a victory. They do not expect to come out of this competition as the underdogs, and here is what some of them have had to say. Pre match preparations begin early in newcastle. Not long after lunchtime, confident England Fans were warming up. For me, 3, 4 0, 3, 4 0, easy. England are that good and scotland are that bad . Scotland are that bad, england are that good, yeah, easy. I think it will be a very slow game, to be honest, but well come out on top. 2 1 england. Definitely 2 1 england. 30. 20. 30 not a lot is going to get in the way of the football tonight, not even anthony and andreas wedding day. Well, were going to have a meal and all that, and were going to see where the night goes with a few drinks and all that and see, hopefully, england will win. So the Football Match is definitely on the agenda . Oh, yes, definitely, definitely. Do you mind . Well, havent got a lot of choice laughter. Next door, Pub Manager Phil is up against it a scot in an English Football supporting city. Just wonderful, absolutely wonderful no, the guys have been great, been good all day. Weve had a mixture of scotland and England Fans in. Were usually very busy from the train station, from a mixture of both, so its good banter. Many of them will eventually end up here, the city centre fanzone, with a giant screen and carefully spaced tables. The majority of them are very responsive and Kind Of do as theyre told because, again, they appreciate being allowed out of pandemic, out of their houses, and being able to mingle and that and have a great time with theirfriends. And that novelty of having a Big Night Out is something special. Its amazing to be in this atmosphere, out of the house, being with my friends and social distanced. Its great. And theyre safe. And its just. Oh, the atmosphere is amazing. Goal scorers of england Vs Scotland Games Past are legend here. Will tonight become another remembered for years . Hopes are high. Danny savage, Bbc News, newcastle. It may not be full, but all the fans are so up for this. Now it is time for the players to try and drown out all that external noise. Many of them wont even have been born in them wont even have been born in the last time the mens teams met at euro 96. England have made two changes to the side that beat croatia, Harry Maguire on the bench. Scotland have made four changes, Kieran Tierney making it back into defence, and Billy Gilmour starts in midfield. Iwill defence, and Billy Gilmour starts in midfield. I will leave you with the words of Scotland Boss Steve clarke. He said these players are used to playing in big matches, and they dont come much bigger. They certainly dont natalie pirks, thank you. The Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has said the partys historic win in the Chesham And Amersham By Election will send a Shock Wave through british politics. The seat had been a conservative stronghold since its creation in 1974, but the lib dem candidate managed to overturn an 16,000 Majority And Win by more than 8,000 votes. The conservatives said the result was disappointing and theyd now analyse what went wrong. Our deputy political Editor Vicki young reports. Finally, the Liberal Democrats have something to cheer about. Victory in a leafy Buckinghamshire Seat the conservatives would never have dreams of losing. Enough is enough. We will be heard, and this government will listen. How are you feeling, Mr Davey . Very happy. And a rare chance for the lib dem leader to make the headlines. Do you know what happens when a really powerful, Strong Orange Force goes against a Blue Wall . Let me show you. Cheering. Polls suggest just 7 of voters back his party, but Sir Ed Davey insists this isnt a one off, and lib dems could knock down other conservative strongholds in southern england. I think there is a Shock Wave through british politics. This wasntjust another Liberal Democrat by Election Victory, it was one of our best ever, and on the swing that we achieved, dozens of conservative seats would fall to the Liberal Democrats in the next election. So the lib dems we know are good spectacular By Election wins, and they will see this as a sign that they are the main challengers to the tories in many southern seats, not labour. And there are conservative mps concerned that there has been too much emphasis on the north of england, and this is what happens when tory voters feel ignored. Many here are furious about hs2, the high Speed Rail Link being carved through the chilterns, and new Planning Proposals which could mean more housing developments. On the High Street in amersham, voters reflected on the conservatives defeat. Totally taken it for granted, and they havent worked for our votes this time round, at all. Ithe Hsz Building which was drivenl by the conservative government has made people have a Protest Vote |for lib dem, but im not entirely| sure if its the start of the Blue Wall tumbling down. I think thats maybe a little bit too far. L i felt quite honestly weve been taken for granted in this constituency. I speak as a tory voter, who has always voted tory, who has never, ever voted Liberal Democrat in my life, but did so at this election. Labour received a dismal 622 votes, the worst by Election Result in the partys history, and for boris johnson, it was a rare election defeat. Yes, it was certainly a disappointing result, but there were particular circumstances there, and we are getting on with delivering our agenda for the whole country. Cheering. This victory could be down to many things. A well organised campaign on local issues and lingering anti brexit sentiment in a remain voting area. But many conservatives believe in a general election the result would still go their way. Vicki young, Bbc News, amersham. From today, all adults in england can book in their Coronavirus Vaccine as part of the governments plan to vaccinate as many over 18s as possible ahead of the new target date, for the end of restrictions onjuly 19th. It comes as new data from public Health England suggests that a single dose of the Pfizer Or Astrazeneca vaccine reduces the risk of needing Hospital Treatment by three quarters. Heres our Health Correspondent Catherine burns. In normal times, this would be entirely unremarkable festivalgoers braving the british summer weather. I feel a wee bit damp, but this will be the highlight of my year. Download festival at Donington Park at leicestershire is going ahead as part of a government pilot scheme. Everyones had to test for coronavirus before pitching their tents. No tents in sheffield, but the queues for vaccines started early this morning. From today, all over 18s in england can book theirs. My arm doesnt hurt too bad, and i think thats outweighed by the prospect of having Normal Life back. Normal life was penciled in to start in england next monday, but its been pushed back a month to get as many people vaccinated as possible. 18 year old andreas and his mates have just left Sixth Form and want to celebrate before university. How does it feel that its finally your go after seeing all the other ages have theirs . Its just good to feel like youre actually doing something, because for so long, we were sitting doing nothing. Yeah. Ijust really want to get the vaccine, so that i can sort of Go Out as much as i can this summer. Long term, its probably good we all get it, but short term,| i dont think it makes any real difference to your life, what you can do. Unlike the rest of you guys, you are not 18 yet, are you . No, im not. And there is a level of vaccine envy. Its Kind Of a race at this point between the vaccinations and the increase in cases at the moment. Figures from the Office For National Statistics suggest that one in 540 people across the uk would test positive for covid. That is up, not hugely about 10 on the week before. This Vaccine Push comes as public Health England says 99 of the cases its checking are now the Delta Variant. And since february, 806 people with it have needed Hospital Treatment, but only 84 of them were double vaccinated. And theres good news, too, about the impact of a single jab. If youve had two doses of either of these vaccines, youre more or less guaranteed not to end up in hospital. Your chances of ending up in hospital are reduced by more than 20 times. And even one dose, once youve had a chance to make an immune response to it, will very substantially reduce the risk of ending up in hospital. With just 31 days now until the 19th ofjuly, the postponed freedom day, everyjab in every arm will give us extra protection. Catherine burns, Bbc News. The latest Government Figures show that in the past 24 hours, 11 deaths were reported and 10,476 new infections were recorded. It means an average of 8,740 new cases per day in the last week. Nearly 244,000 people received a first dose of the vaccine in the latest 24 hour period, almost 42. 5 million people have now had theirfirstjab thats just over 80 percent of uk adults. More than 223,000 people have had their second dose of the vaccine in the latest 24 hour period. Almost 30. 9 million people have now had both doses thats 58. 7 percent of uk adults. Welsh Football Fans coming here to rome for the Sunday Euro 2020 match between wales and italy are ok because it only comes place on monday. We dont yet know how long it will last, previous quarantine have tended to last for some weeks and with italy still on the uk s and buddhist, british tourists coming here would have to quarantine for ten days when they go back to the uk. Last month Southern Europe is big tourism destinations, italy, greece, spain, portugal opened their doors to uk terrace, italy is the first two in effect close them, further dashing hopes of british Holiday Makers aiming for some italian sunshine this summer. Mark, thank you. An Nhs Trust has been fined more than £730,000 for failing to provide safe Care And Treatment following the death of a baby boy. East Kent Hospitals admitted failures in the case of harry richford, who died seven days after his Emergency Delivery in november 2017. Our social Affairs Correspondent Michael Buchanan reports they didnt want to be here. They shouldnt have been here. But today, Sarah And Tom richford came to court to hear the Nhs Trust that failed them receive a record fine. Their son harry died in 2017 after a catastrophic series of errors in Maternity Care. At folkestone magistrates court, the East Kent Hospitals Trust was fined a record £733,000 forfailing to provide safe Care And Treatment to both harry and sarah. Sadly, both individual and systemic errors are pushed aside for many years with no learning taking place. This failure to learn has led to the significant failings witnessed in harrys death, and No Doubt countless others which are now being investigated. Before harry richfords death, Maternity Problems were mounting. In 2014, the trust investigated eight neonatal deaths in just eight months. In 2015, an external review found maternity consultants didnt carry out ward rounds or review women. In 2017, management acknowledged problems in developing a safe Patient Culture in Maternity Care. Following the fine, the trust apologised and said improvements were under way. Learning lessons and efforts to improve should never stop, and we will work tirelessly to provide high Quality Maternity services which continually strive for improvement and are safe, effective and centred on the women and children we care for. An independent investigation into Maternity Care across East Kent is now examining around 200 cases. For harrys parents, who had to fight for answers and accountability, today marked an ending of sorts. We would now ask to be given privacy to take Todays News on board. We will privately support any future investigations in an effort to ensure long lasting change at local and national levels as the legacy for harrys short life. Hopefully less families will have to suffer unnecessary birth, Death Or Injury bereavement as a result. Michael buchanan, Bbc News. Imran Ahmad Khan has been charged with sexually assaulting a 15 year old boy in 2008. Mr khan, who was elected in 2019, has released a statement denying the allegation in the strongest terms. He will appear at the Central Criminal Court on 15july. The conservatives say he has been suspended from the party. A british woman who saved her twin Sisters Life by fighting off a crocodile has been speaking about the attack. The women were swimming in a lagoon in mexico when the crocodile tried to drag 28 year old Melissa Laurie under water. She has just been released she hasjust been released in hospital where she was recovering from the attack. Her sister georgia had to fend off repeated attacks by punching the creature, while trying to pull her sibling to safety. Shes been speaking to will grant. A Bandage Hiding the teeth marks in her wrist. The only outward sign of georgia lauries fight with the crocodile. I actually heard her scream, and i saw her being taken underneath by the crocodile, and then i realised she was really in trouble when i was calling out her name, and there was no response from her. It grabbed her on the leg and her behind, and tried to Death Roll her and drag her away. So i was beating it on its snout, and it grabbed my wrist and my arm, so i had to beat it off with my other arm. Their nightmare began here, at the manialtepec lagoon. An unlicensed german guide told their Tour Group it was safe to swim in these waters, despite it being hatching season for crocodiles. Its Just One Of Those Things where, you know, mistakes happen, and so i dont want him to feel any worse, because we all make mistakes. Yes, pretty big one. Georgias bravery undoubtedly saved melissa, who still has months of recovery ahead. I helped save my Sisters Life, but also she fought for her own life as well. She really fought and clung on. Will grant, Bbc News, puerto escondido. Lets go back to wembley now not long to go until the England Scotland clash gets under way. Our Sports Editor Dan Roan is there how special a Sporting Occasion this is . This is one of those rare footballing occasions that feels like its footballing occasions that feels like its appeal extends well beyond traditional sporting audiences. It feels like a real privilege to be out. Eversince feels like a real privilege to be out. Ever since the draw for the euros was made, this is the fixture that stood out as arguably the highlight of the Sporting Calendar stop clashes between whole nations in football or be special but the fact this happens in a major Tournament Lens at additional resonance especially of course given that It Resonance especially of course given Thatitis Resonance especially of course given that it is here at wembley, the only previous meeting between England And Scotland at a major tournament occurred at 25 years ago and in recent days, theres been countless replays in the mind of that iconic match, the magical goal by paul gascoigne. A game that seemed to encapsulates a simpler and freer age and i think for many people the excitement and build up and anticipation to this has been a welcome relief, a distraction from what is of course a very challenging time. On paper, england clearly are favourites, 40 places in World Rankings separate them and scotland but in games like this, form can Go Out the window, Pride And Passion can take over and in pure footballing terms, both teams desperate for victory. Dan, thank you. Time for a look at the weather. Heres ben rich. Whatever happens in sport, i think people will agree that scotland has won in weather trends today. Beautiful weather in orkney, compare this with oxford, the rain teaming down today. Its been an exceptionally wet day in southern parts of england, parts of hampshire have seen 75 millimetres of rain but as you see from the radar, this rain is beginning to break up and fragments, starting to slide away into the north sea. Things will slowly but surely dry out across the southern and eastern areas through tonight. Some clear spells developing, some residual cloud left behind the further east you are. Quite a cool and fresh night compared to recent nights, 12 or 13 in the south east, single digits for a good part of scotland and northern ireland. Tomorrow for most places, it should be a dry day with some spells of sunshine. We are likely to see showers breaking out across parts of scotland, the Odd One of those could be heavy, some areas of cloud around, particularly gathering in the south with the Odd Shower here later in the day. Temperature is 13 degrees in aberdeen, 21 in cardiff. Throughout Saturday Night we see the showers in the south becoming more widespread and that leads us into sunday, which is, i have to say, quite a messy looking weather day. The detail hard to pin down, low pressure will be close by, that means it will be unsettled, some rain at times. Looks quite likely this lump of Heavy Rain will affect eastern areas for some time on sunday before clearing. Some showery rain developing elsewhere, some sunshine, the best of that perhaps in northern England And Scotland. Anywhere you get sunshine, it wont feel too bad but monday . It is the summer solstice, the weather looks cool and wet. Thank you. Thats all from me, so its goodbye from me, and on Bbc One, we nowjoin the bbc s news teams where you are. Hello. This is Bbc News. The headlines. As weve been hearing, new figures suggest that one dose of a Pfizer Or Astrazeneca vaccine reduces the risk of being hospitalised with covid 19 by around three quarters. Protection rises to more than 90 after two jabs. The Office For National Statistics estimates that infections in the uk have risen by about 10 in the past week, from 110,000 to 119,000. The more infectious Delta Variant accounts for almost all of the cases, says public Health England. Peter openshaw is professor of Experimental Medicine at imperial college london. He told me a little earlier, that todays latest figures from public Health England continues to show that the Vaccination Programme is hugely successful. He isa he is a regular contributor on Bbc News talking about the covid 19 figures. Well, i think theres No Doubt at all that the vaccines are really effective at reducing the more severe end of disease, and that those whove been vaccinated are very unlikely to get serious illness or, sadly, to die, but i think it is also becoming very clear that we are in the middle of what you can describe as the third wave. You know, the cases are rising pretty fast and with the number of infections were seeing im sorry to say that, inevitably, that will translate into a number of deaths and theres going to be a lagin the data because it always takes time for those deaths to become registered. That is, you know, a very sad thing for those affected, the friends, family, the people that are directly involved. The question is, though, whether we need to be worried in the way that we would have been worried a few months ago in terms of the capacity of the system to cope with that without either being overwhelmed or doing so much damage to the other work that the Health Service does. Whats your sense of that at the moment . I think were still waiting to see. Its very good news that the vaccines are working as effectively as they are. You know, we have some extremely good vaccines available in this country, which work really well against the delta agent. Even one dose is pretty protective. You need two doses to get the protective effect. You need two doses to get the full protective effect. And we are building up vaccines very fast, you know, 3 Million vaccines being given per week at the moment and thats making some inroads into the unvaccinated younger adults and the older adults who are still not vaccinated and i think it is so important we do get vaccines into as many people as possible. Clearly, that progress is ongoing now with people. Effectively, any adult now able to get at least the first vaccination and then within the requisite number of weeks their second and we are seeing the effects. I mean, that will lead many people watching to say, look, actually, therefore we have done all we can. We now know we have to live with this virus. Therefore, an end to social distancing and all the other measures in terms of the panoply of legal requirements is not unreasonable at this point, because we are always knew we were going to have to live with this virus. What would be your response to that . Well, we just need to get the vaccine rates up. You know, over 70 plus.
