a two—minute silence was observed before the start of the women's six nations game, too, between italy and england. it started as a day of reflection at aintree — it ended with one of the great sporting stories of all time. today, rachael blackmore has made history after becoming the first female jockey to win the grand national. the irish rider rode the ii—to—i shot minella times to victory, as andy swiss reports. a day when racing paid its respects, the jockeys wearing black arm bands. the duke of edinburgh had been an honorary member of the jockey club, and before the first race aintree fell silent. the atmosphere here is understandably subdued, also because there are no spectators here. covid restrictions mean that for the first time in the national*s history, it is behind closed doors. but for the a0 riders, there was a chance at one of racing's most prestigious prizes. they set out over aintree fences. what followed was a sporting milestone, as rachael blackmore on minella times lead into the closing stages. no female jockey had ever won the grand national until this. as blackmore held on for history. delight and a landmark moment. a grand national in unprecedented circumstances has produced an unprecedented victory. an incredible day. and this afternoon's premier league game at the etihad was one to rememberfor leeds united — who despite playing the whole of the second half with ten men — beat the leaders manchester city by two goals to one, slowing down city's charge to the title and pulling off one of their biggest wins in recent memory. ben croucher reports. manchester city winning the premier league has felt more when rather than if. the if might be creeping into view. sandwiched in between two big european games, city made a number of changes. when stewart dallas fired leeds ahead, this definitely felt different. if leeds' plan was to protect that lead, this challenge gave them little option. when the referee had the chance to change his mind, the yellow was cancelled, cooper was off. it then became a game of defence versus attack, when rather than if city would score. silver, wide. guadiola, quite. knocking on the door often enough. taurus was eventually let in. the trouble is that pressing for a winner, they were slightly ajar at the back. dallas at the double, city sunk into stoppage time. 11 points from their last six games will be enough to lift that fifth title, even though today's display was a bit iffy. leeds' next match is against liverpool. liverpool have finally won a premier league match at anfield in 2021, after coming from behind to beat aston villa and bring to an end their six matching losing run at home. it looked like it was all going to go wrong again for the home side when ollie watkins put villa ahead shortly before half—time and liverpool had a goal ruled offside by var before the break. but mo salah eventually managed to get the equaliserjust before the hour mark. and then trent alexander arnold, with gareth soutgate watching, snatched the win in injury time to boost liverpool's hopes of finishing in the top four. we are behind. we have to put the other teams under pressure. the only way you can do that is to win your games. there is no time to waste. that is the truth and tonight was a close, but we did it. that's so important and feels so good. yeah, that's exactly why we do this stuff. so really great. liverpool weren't fourth in the table for long. chelsea have replaced them after an impressive 4—1 at crystal palace. kai havertz with the opener after eight minutes. thomas tuchal*s side, beaten by west brom last weekend, were three—up within half an hour. christian pulisic and kurt zouma on the scoresheet. palace did pull one back through benteke before pulisic*s second. swansea city hope to be in the premier league next season — they've boosted their hopes of promotion from the championship, with a 3—0 win at millwall. steve cooper's side had lost four games in a row, but an excellent goal by andre ayew put them ahead just before half time. and swansea took control in the second half — excellent work from jamal lowe as he scored his first goal in 18 games. and, having rediscovered his shooting boots, lowe made it 3—0 in the 85th minute — swansea fourth in the table and looking good for a play—off place. elsewhere in the championship, leaders norwich need just two more points for promotion after a 1—0 win at derby county. third—placed brentford returned to winning ways with a 5—0 victory at preston, while bournemouth are up to sixth after beating coventry 4—1. birmingham are now nine points above the relegation zone, after three wins in five, beating stoke city 2—0. struggling rotherham got a point in a goalless draw at huddersfield. ahead of their old firm scottish cup tie against rangers next weekend, celtic have got their biggest premiership win of the season as they thrashed livingston 6—0 at home. two goals from mohamed elyounoussi. bottom side hamilton were beaten 1—0 by dundee united — marc mcnulty with the goal there. kilmarnock against ross county finished 2—2. motherwell beat st mirren 1—0. rugby union next, and england have thrashed italy 67—3 in the women's six nations. the defending champions scored nine tries as they reached the final of the tournament, which has a different format for this year, asjo currie reports. stepping out, knowing that a win against italy would send england through to the six nations grand final. a moment of reflection, and then it was down to business. against their resolute hosts, england knew they would have to take their chances. they did just that. first showing her power and then her pace to put the visitors ahead. a moment later, an almost an identical move. this time, meg jones with a quick reaction. vicky fleetwood in the right place. after the restart, england upped the pace, running in another seven tries. the pick of the bunch being this individual effort. her second of the afternoon. it's brilliant. sensational from england. almost faultless with the boot, and eight conversions from nine. england fly home with a bonus point win, and will now look to defend their title in a fortnight*s time. it'll be a straight shootout between france and ireland to face england in the final. they meet next weekend. ireland hammered wales 45—0 this afternoon. wales losing both their group games without even scoring a point. exeter chiefs time as european champions is over. they've been knocked out in the last eight by the pro iii champions leinster. the chiefs raced into the lead with two tries in the first eight minutes but leinster responded with three of their own, jordan le—moor scoring two of them. 17 points from the boot of ross byrne proved decisive in the end, too. sale sharks are also out of the competition, ending all british hopes. they trailed la rochelle byjust two at half time in france before eventually being outclassed by 16—21. leicester tigers have reached the european challenge cup semifinals for a second successive season by beating newcastle falcons by 25—15. the twice former european champions helens are through to the quarterfinals of rugby league's challenge cup after a hard—fought 26—18 victory over last years winners leeds rhinos. adam wild was watching. it is the sport's grandest of competitions. even at this early stage, only one of these grand old clubs would go any further. leeds are the challenge cup holders, but in st helens, there is no more fearsome opposition. that point forcefully made within three minutes. leeds are a developing side with plenty of potential. it was going to take something special to stop them here. but having kept the scores tight in the first—half, they went too far. a tackle that was as high as it was late. a red card followed, and games can turn. especially when saints have such talents. this pass allowed them to wind in the gap. it seemed the cup holders were going out. but leeds were not letting go just yet. two late tries kept saints guessing. that was, until with seconds remaining, st helens finished what they started. st helens through, but onlyjust. staying with the challenge cup, things were much more simple for last years beaten finalists salford. they are comfortably into the next round after a 68—4 win over widnes. catalans are also through. it's "moving day" at the masters — and the penultimate round is under way in georgia. england'sjustin rose began day three with a one shot lead — and he's made a great start at augusta — having birdied the first two holes. there's live commentary of day 3 on bbc radio 5 live from 8pm. that's all from sportsday. good evening. it was a cold and frosty start for many this morning, but there was some lovely sunshine around early on. however, as the day progressed, we quite literally had four seasons in one day. a frosty start, some sunshine, then some showers. and the showers turning increasingly wintry with some hail and snow mixed in there as well. this has been the story through the day today. the shower clouds developed as we went through the morning and then became quite widespread into the afternoon. the only exception is down to the south—east where we had some fairly dense cloud throughout the day, associated with this weather front. and it brought some light, showery rain as well. now, the front drifts away, and through the next night the showers will fade and the temperatures will fall away quite sharply. so we are likely to see another frost in many northern and eastern areas across the country. maybe that frost getting into the south—east with the lack of cloud. the cold arctic air once again returns across the country, and so temperatures look likely to struggle as we go through the day on sunday. there will be some sunshine around first thing, but it will be the early bird that catches the sunshine as the shower clouds developed through the afternoon and, once again, those showers could be wintry with some hail, some sleet and snow mixed in there as well. almost anywhere could catch a shower as they fly through, and those temperatures will struggle. 6—8 c, generally, but we mightjust scrape double figures somewhere along the south. as we move out of sunday into monday, we've got this area of high pressure building in from the south—west. but this weather front across the top of that high could bring some outbreaks of rain. it looks likely to be slipping its way into northern ireland, eventually into wales and south—west england. so a dry day looks likely on monday across scotland and much of eastern england. still a cool breeze coming down from the north sea. here, those temperatures a little disappointing. once again, highs of 7—10 celsius. as we move out of monday into tuesday, the high pressure is going to build and stay with us. now, the position of this high will be subject to question and there is still likely to be the risk of some showers from time to time. where the high is sitting depends on the type of weather you will get, but it does look likely that we will see something a little less cold — temperatures increasing as we go through the week. perhaps back to average for the time of year. take care. this is bbc news, the headlines at 8: prince charles pays tribute to his father, saying his "dear papa" was "a very special person", and speaks of the family's sad loss. i particularly wanted to say that my father, i suppose the last 70 years, has given the most remarkable, devoted service to the queen, to my family, and to the country, and also to the whole of the commonwealth, and, as you can imagine, myfamily and i miss my father enormously. the duke's funeral is to take place next saturday, at st george's chapel in windsor. the congregation will be limited to 30, and the palace said prince harry will attend.
