care homes allow one person in. and coming up on bbc news. still significant gaps between men and women's prize money in some sports — but a bbc study finds the overwhelming majority now offer parity at the top level. good evening and welcome to the bbc news at six. the duke and duchess of sussex have made damaging and shocking claims about life in the royalfamily as they opened up to oprah winfrey in a long and wide ranging interview. meghan says she felt so lonely and unsupported that she contemplated taking her own life at one point. and she raised allegations of racism, saying an unnamed member of the royalfamily had questioned what colour her baby's skin would be. prince harry spoke candidly of the deep divisions in his family and said he felt very let down by his father. here's our royal correspondent, nicholas witchell. whatever the palace expected the reality was worse with meghan describing uncaring attitudes and a racist remark from a member of the royal family. it almost broke her. were you thinking of harming yourself, _ were you thinking of harming yourself, having suicidal thoughts? yes. yourself, having suicidal thoughts? yes this _ yourself, having am scared because this is very real. it is not some abstract idea. this is methodical and this is not who i am. fix, and this is not who i am. a particular low point had occurred in january 2019. the couple had attended an event at the royal albert hall. meghan says she was in tears for much of it and told harry she did not want to be alive anymore. she said she had approached one of the most senior people in the palace seeking help and she says she was told was nothing that could be done. rewind to a spring day in may 2018. it all started with so much promise. the meghan admitted she had been naive at the time of her wedding to harry. she said she did not fully understand what her role as a royal will involve. the queen quickly took her under her wing and there was a successfuljoint visit to chester. meghan said the queen had always made herfeel welcome to chester. meghan said the queen had always made her feel welcome and she loved being in a company. but the relationship with catherine the duchess of cambridge was evidently more complicated. at one point there were newspaper stories that meghan had made catherine cry. in fact meghan said, it was catherine who had made her cry but the palace never corrected the stories. it was a moment, meghan said, when things changed. they were willing to lie to protect other members of the royal family but they were not willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband, she said. and then to another extraordinary claim concerning their son archie in the months before his birth, meghan said there had been discussions about his status and security and she says there was a comment from a family member about the colour of his skin. in those months when i was pregnant all around the same time so we had interned in the raised uncomfortable and tough questions. adina campbell, bbc news. prince harry and meghan's interview covered a wide range of subjects, from their wedding to racism and mental health. 0ur correspondent sarah campbell has been taking a closer look at some of the key questions that were raised. there was surprise when meghan said in the interview the couple had in fact been married for three days before we all saw them tying the knotin before we all saw them tying the knot in may 2018 for the clarification since then, the bbc has been told in fact they had a private exchange of files and meghan had incorrectly described it as a marriage which legally it was not. this is the question about why archie is not a prince. suggested in her interview perhaps the rules had been changed to prevent this happening but king george v had decreed only those in direct line of succession could be styled as a prince so that is charles, william and george and the rules modified to include his siblings. and when charles does become king archie and any siblings will automatically be styled prince and princess because they would be grandchildren of the sovereign. security is always a sensitive issue for the royal family because it is provided by the metropolitan police and therefore paid by the taxpayer for the working members of the royal family are eligible for royal security detail but once you step back as the couple did last year they could no longer expected to be paid for or at least not by the taxpayer. this relates to the much talked about bridesmaids dress fitting for today the story repeated endlessly in the press was that meghan had somehow caused catherine the duchess of cambridge to cry whether it was to do with a pair of tights or that princess charlotte's dress was too small. but to date meghan said it was the other way round and it was something that the duchess of cambridge has said that made her cry. it may seem trivial but meghan said it mattered because the narrative was wrong and she was painted in a bad light and no one corrected it. 0prah she was painted in a bad light and no one corrected it. oprah winfrey says this was one of the most surprising claims in the interview. but a member of the royal family in conversation with harry expressed concern about the colour of the couple was my child. neither harry nor meghan would say who the person was and apparently prince harry made clear it was not the queen of the duke of edinburgh leaving the big question, who was it. 0ur royal correspondent nicholas witchell is with me. is buckingham palace expected to respond? nothing so far and possibly the queenjust wants to nothing so far and possibly the queen just wants to watch the interview herself later this evening. family members you must oppose will be hurt. 0fficials i think will be shocked even dumbfounded because they tried so hard to make this work on the idea that buckingham palace is full of fusty men in suits just is not correct. tim sussex was hand—picked, the private secretary and australian woman, communions —— communing case american man. they wanted to show that the palace had learnt the lessons of princess diana from 25 years ago but it did not work and will have this inversion of meghan from a strong independent woman as she certainly is to a broken woman as she tells the story who had to escape. how damaging could this interview be in the long run? i think it is too early to say but i think undoubtedly and this underlines that one of the great challenges that the palace faces is the assimilation of outsiders who marry into the royal family. we have seen diana, sarah ferguson and now megan. there have been some successes, kate middleton most notably, the counters of wessex as well the plants will want to learn lessons but i cannot see the central members of the family feeling that they should retreat from the central principle that in the positions of great privilege that they occupy they have an absolute obligation to do their duty and to put that 1st. finally on a lighter note it was not in my report, harry and meghan disclosed that their baby is a girl to be born in the summer. hick to be born in the summer. nick witchell, thank _ to be born in the summer. nick witchell, thank you. _ the time is nearly quarter past six. our top story this evening: one of the most figures show there is still hesitancy about being vaccinated among some groups of people. 0ur health editor hugh pym is here with us.... who is particularly concerned? sophie, this is a survey by the office for national statistics, covering scotland, england and wales, done in early february, and it asked adults their views about the vaccine. first, it shows overall that there were 91% of adults who were positive towards the vaccine, higher than in december. but there was quite big variation in those talking about hesitancy. that means they didn't want the vaccine, hadn't had it or didn't know. first, age groups, and you can see on a chart here, the youngest age group, 16—29, 17%, much more hesitant than the older groups on the right—hand side of the chart there. then ethnicity, and on this chart, you can see that black or black british adults were much more likely than other groups, 44%, to be hesitant about the vaccine. now, the survey also goes on to cover other groups. it shows that in the most deprived areas, there was double the amount of hesitancy as in the least deprived areas. that is in england. a lot of food for thought for health officials and policymakers as the vaccine programme continues to roll out. , . g vaccine programme continues to roll out. , . ~' , ., let's take a look at some of today's other news. detectives investigating the disappearance of a woman in south london say they remain "open—minded as to all possibilities". 33—year—old sarah everard hasn't been seen since last wednesday evening after she left a friend's house in clapham. police are asking people near to where she was last seen, to check their dashcams and doorbell footage. the governor of the bank of england says the long—term hit to the economy from the pandemic could be smaller than in past recessions. andrew bailey says that while the total value of goods and services produced in the uk is expected to be 12 per cent lower at the end of march than it was before covid struck, government support would help mitigate some of the worst effects. us presidentjoe biden's climate envoy, john kerry, has met with borisjohnson in london. it's part of the united states' diplomatic push to step up efforts to fight global warming. both countries want nations to promise greater cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, ahead of the cop26 climate conference in glasgow in november. every single country has got to step up ambition, and particularly the 20 countries, of which the uk is one, but the 20 countries that are the equivalent of 81% of all emissions. the syrian girl when was shot in the head by the taliban in pakistan in 2012 for campaigning for girls* education. she was flown to england for treatment where she became an activist and the youngest person to win the nobel peace prize. now she's signed a multi—million pound tv deal with the streaming service apple+, where she'll be turning her hand to making programmes. she's been speaking to our arts editor, will gompertz. i will be covering lots of things from comedies to documentaries to movies to tv dramas, and i am a big fan of sitcoms like blackadder. ah, will this brilliant plan involve us climbing out of our trenches and walking very slowly towards the enemy? so how could you possibly know that, blackadder? i it's classified information! malala, that's a large swathe of broadcasting you're talking about and there's only you. how are you going to go about it? well, you know, small but mighty. i believe that, you know, we can get there. i want to inspire women and girls to believe in themselves, step forward and make the change that they want to see happen. one child. 0ne teacher. 0ne book and one pen can change the world. often times when you don't see a person of your background, of your skin colour on the stage, in these fears, you underestimate yourself. you think that you may not be able to to do that, to do that work. so i think when we have more role models that encourage us to believe in ourselves. and the world is a state of flux at the moment. and this is the world you'll be reflecting, i assume, in your tv programs. are you optimistic or pessimistic? i am optimistic, but i don't want to deny the reality. like, there are things that, you know, are not fair. there is inequality, there is racism, there is sexism, there is discrimination. so we cannot deny that. but i'm optimistic about the change that we can bring. and i am also optimistic about the fact that we have seen change throughout history, but we have seen that because people in our past have stood up. now it's our time that we do it for ourfuture generation and ourselves, that we bring that change. malala, the youngest person to be awarded a nobel prize for peace, has become an influencer with international reach, a global brand of sorts. with her own charity, book club, social media following, and now this new tv production deal. proof that in the new world of content, it's not who you know that counts, but how many millions of people know you. will gompertz, bbc news. time for a look at the weather. here's ben rich. the weather is set to get a lot livelier over the next
