With the results still coming in, the centre right Opposition Party new democracy has won, with current projections showing it is closing in on an absolute majority. Mr tsiprass syriza party seems to to have paid the price for failing to oppose austerity measures imposed by the eu in return for financial bailouts. Our correspondent mark lowen reports from athens. A victory cry for a change of guard greeces centre right new democracy cheering its new era, winning an outright majority and ousting alexis tsipras. Its leader has refreshed a party once seen as the corrupt establishment. And, as the populist, left wing tsipras broke promises to end austerity, greece has returned to the political mainstream. Well, first of all, i asked for a strong mandate to change the country, and the greek people delivered. Im very, very grateful for the result. We won an outright majority, which was our main target. Alexis tsipras put on a brave face as he voted earlier, but it was almost a eulogy. He lost many supporters after his humiliating u turn from 2015, when he pledged to rip up the bailout and budget cuts, but instead accepted a third rescue programme, in return for more austerity, becoming the brussels establishment he had fought against. The rhetoric has been relentlessly anti european, and misleading in many ways. So im very, very happy. This is a victory for pro european political forces. This country doesnt need celebrations for a party that wins an election. This country needs jobs. This country needs investment. The worst peacetime recession of any developed country shrank greeces economy by a quarter. Protests consumed athens, 500,000 left the country, and unemployment hit 28 . As tsipras defied the eu, it threatened to eject greece from the euro and sink the banks. He was forced back. Before brexit, there was talk of grexit greeces departure from the eurozone. It didnt happen as alexis tsipras, who vowed to stand up to the eu, was defeated, perhaps an omen for another eu member now trying to defy brussels, and a sign that after a populist wave, the political cycle can swing back to the establishment. Greece now looks to its post bailout, post tsipras future, as growth returns and the glimmer of a recovery grows. Greece has, it seems, turned a corner and left its populist era behind. Mark lowen, bbc news, athens. Here in the uk, the Foreign Office has begun an investigation into who leaked e mails from britains ambassador to washington which described the Trump Administration as being inept and uniquely dysfunctional. President trump has since reacted, saying the ambassador hasnt served the uk well. In the memos obtained by the mail on sunday, Sir Kim Darroch says, despite his shortcomings, President Trump shouldnt be written off. Donald trump said the memo hasnt served the uk well. Andy moore reports. During last months visit to the uk, mrand mrs trump during last months visit to the uk, mr and mrs trump met Prince Charles and the duchess of cornwall. The president also spotted another face he recognised, the uks ambassador to washington. Hi again. It is going well. Now, it is not pleasantries, but putdowns that are being exchanged. The president could only just be heard above the sound of a helicopter engine. The ambassador has not served the uk well, i can tell you that. The publication of comments made by the ambassador about the president have prompted an official investigation at the Foreign Office into the source of the leak. The trade secretary speaking in washington said the leaking was unethical and unpatriotic. I think that our diplomats have to be able to give a bit of colour in their views, in both directions, about how they view the political scene. I think the question here is about the behaviour of someone that would leak a document which has a limited circulation, for obvious reasons. Document which has a limited circulation, for obvious reasonsm the short term, least, Sir Kim Darroch seems safe in his job. The short term, least, Sir Kim Darroch seems safe in hisjob. He is due to retire at the end of the year anyway. Meanwhile, the journalist who wrote the original story has hinted there might be more revelations to come about what the British Ambassador really thinks about President Trump. Lets brief you on some of the other stories making the news a decree signed by the russian president , vladimir putin, has come into effect suspending all direct flights between russia and georgia, in response to anti russian protests last month in the georgian capital, tblisi. The protesters tried to storm the georgian parliament, where a visiting russian lawmaker had been allowed to address mps. Malta has said that all 65 migrants on board a german flagged rescue ship will be allowed onto the island. The vessel, alan kurdi, arrived off maltas coast after it was denied access to italian ports. The maltese Prime Minister said that, following discussions with the european commission, all of the rescued migrants would be relocated to other eu member states. Venezuelas opposition has agreed to resume talks with delegates representing president nicolas maduro. The meeting will be held in barbados, but a date has not been announced. The talks will be mediated by norway, which facilitated the last attempt to break the political deadlock in may. Lets go back to our main story, the Election Results in greece. As we heard from mark lowen earlier, the win of the conservative new Democracy Party is widely seen as a punishment for syrizas handling of the economy, and the fact that the party forced through austerity measures despite saying it would resist demands by the European Union and International Monetary fund to do say. It was a precondition for a total of 360 billion worth of bailouts. With me now isjonathan charles, director of communications for the European Bank for reconstruction and development. Jonathan, we were talking earlier, wont we . There may be a change of government for greece, but the economic problems still remain. Very good to see you, there is no doubt that this new government will have a tough time ahead. It wants to make changes to the economy, it is talking about cutting taxes. You got to remember that greece is coming out of this crisis with 183 accumulated debt, so it really has very little room to manoeuvre. It is still subject to oversight from the European Union, and thats going to make it very hard. Yes, they may be able to do some things around the fringes, but they are going to have to first of all probably prior privatise some assets of the state to raise money. That will not be popular in greece, it has never been popular, privatisation, with ordinary people. And secondly, there is still need to get on with reform. There is a massive need in the economy for economic reform. How much appetite is there amongst greek people for reform, especially after the last ten years . Greece has been through a very painful time, 40 following living standards. I do go there quite often. It is a country where the European Bank for development operates, and i think people are always in favour of reform in any country until it sta rts reform in any country until it starts to hit them personally. So i think we will see people wrestling against the idea that reform might hit them in the short term. The other issue is that it is very clear to us that there is still desperate need for funding in the private sector. Greeces economy will only grow in future if the private sector is. It is going to have to, because in the end there is not the money with that accumulated high debt of the state to pay for expansion in the public sector. That will not help the economy, it will have to come from the public sector. That is why we are going to get more loa ns to that is why we are going to get more loans to the private sector. But there is a shortage of funding for that expansion. Thank you very much indeed. To stay with us to go through the papers. Do stay with us.
