this is the news hour live from my head quarters in doha fully back to bill coming up in the next sixty minutes leaders claim a mandate low turnout for sunday's secession referendum adds to the uncertainty about what comes next one family's struggle to reunite shows how long way to rico's road to recovery will be after hurricane maria also this hour in malaysia the trial has begun of two women accused of murdering the north korean leader is a strange half brother and we're going to meet seventy five million dollars just. in the next five to six much after visiting a role in giraffe you g.'s in bangladesh the head of the world food program outlines a scale up to help need it. thank you for joining us initial figures released by the catalan regional government show a decisive vote in favor of secession after sunday's referendum but they also indicate an unexpectedly low turnout meanwhile the divide between the regional government in boston and central government in madrid appears to have deepened after the polls closed the president of the regional government. said catalonia had earned its right to independence at least eight hundred forty four people were injured across the region a spanish police moved in to shut down some polling stations speaking from the capital madrid prime minister mariano rajoy said spain had showed it has a resources to defend itself from an attack as serious as this illegal referendum and in another sign that the crisis is far from over labor unions in catalonia have called for a general strike on tuesday while the local government unveiled the preliminary results stressing that despite the violence millions old did and behaved peacefully . i we our element last year today democracy won more importantly today people won and they won because they behaved and defended democracy peacefully in these exceptional circumstances two million two hundred sixty two thousand four hundred and twenty four people voted. john hendren reports now on the day's events in catalonia. catalonia closed its polls in reopening a historic rift with spain. heard earlier catalans had lined up by the thousands devote many paying a high price for. the spanish national police in riot gear battered their way into one voting center after another tossing peaceful voters downstairs striking them with the times and has promised confiscating ballot boxes. they did not discriminate by gender or age advancing on those peacefully protecting the polls sometimes retreating and sometimes clashing verbal ewood catalan is local more so delete apparently over the use of force today the spanish government has demonstrated a shameless attitude showing that it's only through violence that they can get their message across the spanish state has always on such questions with violence and repression. the catalan people have won the right to an independent state which would take the form of a republic here at the polls election organizers used a special tactic they gave the entire voter registry to pulling place so that if police shut down one polling place voters simply went to another this ninety two year old voter remembers when the catalan language was outlawed until the one nine hundred seventy s. now she comes to vote only to be turned away by a system shutdown. i believe we will gain independence because we are sick of the current government that we have. this hundred two year old waited out several outages to cast her ballot. that is just outside the center of barcelona where residents proudly fly the spanish banner some catalans quietly oppose independence he's said thank you i lived here for sixty years of course they love got along yeah it's where my children ah. where my family lives but there is no reason why we have problems with this obsession of just. if i am capital and yeah and i don't think like secessionist to know that i'm from the outside but then when i go to my family home then i'm also from the outside so where i might be wrong and what identity do i have yet the secessionist seem largely to have boycotted the referendum which the spanish government again declared illegitimate under spanish along you get it because. there was no independence referendum in catalonia today i'm the prime minister i'm the leader of the government and we have done what we have to do within the law we've only active in the law. when the voting ended thousands of defiant catalans remained outside to guard the ballots a long way a step and is over. as pedal and celebrate day and the government of spain continue a standoff that might have only just begun john hendren al-jazeera barcelona. and koppen hall has more now from boston on the referendum results. in a tally of the votes offered by catalan no authority as they say an overwhelming majority of those who voted voted in favor of catalonia breaking away from the rest of spain capital thora the say ninety percent of those who voted of voted for secession but the problem lies more in the level of voter turnout and from the figures that we have been given it seems that that did not reach much higher than around forty three percent that effectively means that well over hoffman registered voters in catalonia either did not turn out could not vote or boycotted the vote and that will certainly lead to even deeper divisions between the regional government in catalonia and the central government in madrid in the in the coming days what i believe we will see is that the cattle lying government pushing an interpretation to suggest that perhaps this turnout was a success i given the level of effort by the central government to crack down on this referendum and use police reinforcements to try and shut down voter stations on the other hand it is likely that madrid and prime minister mariano rajoy will point to this relatively low voter turnout to suggest that the catalonian government simply does not have a strong mandate to declare independence from the rest of spain we've going to have to look at developments over the coming forty eight hours because it is on tuesday that the catalan government has said it will declare independence from the rest of spain a based on this voter turnout they say that they will view the results of this referendum as binding also the main labor unions have declared a general strike from choose day in an effort to back the push for secession. john ramon racine now from stanford university says a spanish government's actions in trying to stop the vote does not sit well with the european union's wider value these european union is in difficult situations because the statutes do not allow it to intervene and what they continue to say is an internal affair of one of the member states nevertheless the. the very foundation of the european union rests upon civic rights upon in the non use of. militarized police force police brutality in this case of sort of the talent the against any of the citizens and let's face it with these people who are doing in barcelona and all want they was to go peacefully to the to the polling stations and demanding the right to cuss the vote on their future. in other world news a truce between colombia's government and the country's danding rebels has begun the national liberation army or agree to the terms after negotiations fail several times it's hoped the government and the agreement rather would stand while talks for a longer term deal continue in ecuador and. it's a first ever cease fire demilitarisation takes place the truce will run through january twelfth and may be extended if respected they. start kidnapping recruiting minors and attacking oil routes and pipelines in exchange the the government before making little progress in the capital news was met with relief and hope that the sides will comply with the terms of the truce . we leave this uncertainty in its peace process but it's definitely positive if the eleven wants to do its part to end the war it is great professor victor that the court says monitoring the truce will be important i really believe that the government as well as the. the liberation army elaine are clearly committed to respect that lehman this is the most important point second one i would say disapprobation of the united nations was as well as the catholic church on the third depression of the society in columbus our biggest moment in favor of the peace process and we are really pushed the parties to respect their women talks will restart on october twenty third in quito ecuador but the road to peace will still be long and complex and the year land is seen as more hardline in its ideology and more divided in its chain of seven point one earthquake in mexico has risen to at least three hundred sixty one people after another body was discovered in the capital two hundred twenty of the deaths were in mexico city while others were killed in more and three other states nearly two weeks after the earthquake the majority of the collapse sites have been cleared. the u.s. president has called critics of his response to disaster head puerto rico quote politically motivated ingrates power is still down goods are running no and some families remain spread out nearly two weeks after hurricane maria hit that isabel followed two sisters and i journey to find their missing father. the anti health have not heard from their father for more than ten days he lives in the central mountains in an area that was among the hardest hit by the hurricane. gas is difficult to find these days that's why when neighbors gave them some they decided to go and find him. before they go. their ways to get their work. and now we are trying to. find them he lives in one of the most remote areas of puerto rico if i spent a year in there. there when i was a child but this is the strongest one that so far we headed to was in the are beautiful and now it looks very. very sad but once there we were told we needed to take another road to much of the river but this is what's happening all around port authority that are covered with everything bridges that collapsed now heavy machines are trying to clear the road so people can start moving freely around the island. were able to cover part of the trip by road then we have to walk through the mountains. some houses are destroyed and this is how many are trying to locate their relatives this days and they were told those that been seen a little light going on at night so they are turning on their small electrical panel and this is really good news but even though they lived here most of their lives things have changed since the hurricane there used to be a small road here but it's now completely covered with trees so they're trying to find alternative ways to make it there in spite of the difficulties they say nothing will stop them from making to their old home half an hour later they start calling out and there are signs that things could be ok. shortly after they found what they searched for. we're alive we're alive my girls don't have health ed says we economic sanctions are threatening the livelihoods of kurds who depend on cross border trade. and catalonia is biggest sports seen place behind closed doors fans are shut out of boston known as football match after clashes over the referendum joe have the details in sports. first the trial of two women accused of murdering the north korean leader's estranged half brother is underway in malaysia they're accused of poisoning came jong nam with a nerve agent at kuala lumpur airport in february their women from vietnam ended in asia face the death penalty if they are found guilty let's go live to florence we who is outside the high court. near kuala lumpur in malaysia so what are we expecting exactly today on this first day for us. when we know the true suspect city. have already entered a plea of not guilty and that really doesn't come as a surprise and it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been watching this case now under malaysia laws if you're found guilty of murder it's a mandatory death penalty so they feed it not guilty and we know that they're already spoken to diplomats and representatives from their home countries their defense is that they were into what they thought was a reality television show they didn't know that what they had on their hands when they supposedly smeared complement of v.x. nerve agent on kim jong un's face was lethal enough to kill anyone now we've spoken to one of the defense lawyers as well and this is the next few days the next few weeks will be for the prosecution to present their witnesses to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt that these two women knew what they were doing and how that intention to do. kim jong now we know that the prosecutor action will be calling between thirty and forty witnesses it's like thought that ten of them will be x. but witnesses we're not entirely sure what sort of areas they'll be testifying in but it is very likely that there will be at least a chemicals expert amongst the witnesses right will probably testify as to how the vx nerve agent worked this case as you say florence says granted quite a lot of attention internationally is there a sense that justice will be served. well there's a sense that these two women are unwitting porn again now in south korean and american officials have already said that they believe that this was orchestrated by north korean agents and south korean intelligence officials have also said that there has been a standing order to kill. off kim jong un the north korean leader and the standing order has been in place for at least five years now now these women have all along said they were innocent and they are not the only suspects in this case now police have had police have put out an alert they have been notified interpol there is a red notice alert which is similar to an international arrest warrant out for four of the north korean men who are thought to have left the country just a couple of hours off to the killing was carried out and if these men are not if police have not been able to question them there's a sense that we really won't know what exactly happened because there are a lot of questions that will probably still remain unknown said throughout the course of this trial for example how did the women get hold of these chemicals how were they brought into the country i mean they could have been given these by someone but how were they brought into the country how would these two women who seemingly had no connection with each other brought together to carry out this. thank you very much for that florence florence three. capital kuala lumpur there was more on this let's bring in robert kennedy who is a professor of political science and diplomacy at busan national university his via skype from tucson very good to have you with us on al-jazeera again so i've heard a high profile trial and i wonder how you see this playing into the current geopolitical tensions we're seeing right now in regards to north korea and its nuclear program that the current crisis. sure i think probably the most important thing is that this will continue to make it difficult for north korea to operate overseas it was a place where north koreans could operate without a visa where north koreans could purchase electronics on the open market out any trouble where north korean agents could link up with people from third states these kinds of places are actually few and far between in the world there is obviously as we know there's a lot of sanctions against north korean entities and increasingly against north korean individuals so this is a loss it also sets back north korea's relationship with china kim jong nam had been a protege of china had sort of been under chinese protection and he was eliminated without chinese permission and so i'm actually kind of surprised the north koreans sort of took this kind of action they didn't clear with china or anything i mean just suddenly one day a chinese asset has been eliminated i can imagine the chinese are very happy about that you say he was a chinese asset he had been under chinese protection but how how why would it be even sorry g.'s a word easy how how could the north koreans get to him if he was under chinese protection. yeah i think that's actually one of the sort of big mysteries about this right is that why was kim jong un running around southeast asia without any kind of operational security. the chinese had been holding him sort of on ice if you will sort of in the background in macau because he had a claim to leadership in north korea right he has a blood descendant of the previous kim right and so the working assumption to been that the chinese were sort of holding them just in case of things sort of fell apart in north korea they had a pretender to the throne someone they can manipulate and so on and presumably this is why kim jong un wanted to leave him eliminated because he was a possible blood heir so i actually find it quite surprising that the chinese would let someone that valuable go running around southeast asia without any kind of protection that's just one of the many mysteries of this of this murder what are the what's the current status of the relations between china and north korea right now especially when you take into account the pressure that's being put on the chinese government right now to you know to to rein in north korea and you know we've heard from the u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson who is working with china now it seems to to put more pressure on north korea where does that leave relations between pyongyang and beijing. yeah i think the chinese are pretty upset with the north koreans they just don't want to say it publicly i think geopolitically the chinese see north korea as a useful buffer between them and the americans and the japanese and south koreans so they like the idea of china of korea being divided and north korea being roughly in the chinese orbit but they really don't like is the sort of ideological gangster kind of governance of north korea right so the pursuit of nuclear weapons obviously is very disruptive to china i think that china i think they do think china is not lying when they say they want to denuclearize korea they want to keep the north korea alive they don't mind the kim family but i don't think they want them with nuclear weapons similar i think the chinese realize that all this kind of north korean gangster isn't the kind of things that we've seen in malaysia not just the murders but north korea traffickers and methamphetamines and counterfeit dollars and so i think that north korea does a lot of sort of shady illicit stop and i think the chinese would like to find a way to rein that in but they don't really know how all that sort of ends up or down in not that china right because it's you know chinese banks that whole north korean money and stuff like that and china acts as a pipeline to north korea and all this tarnishes china's reputation as sort of a responsible normal you know rising superpower right they look like they're sort of a patron of the of this sort of gangster state right right and so i would say that the relationship is probably pretty strained but until china decides that north korea isn't sort of worth it as a geo political buffer anymore i don't see them cutting north korea loose very interesting very good to hear thoughts on this as always robert kelly thank you very much for joining us there from wilson thank you for having me now meanwhile the u.s. president has dismissed his secretary of state's office to negotiate with north korea as a waste of time donald trump's comments come a day after rex harrison revealed the u.s. was using direct channels of communication with pyongyang mike hanna has more from washington. secretary of state rix to listen has been holding high level talks in beijing dealing both with north korea as well as the wider relationship between the u.s. and china this seen as a crucial part of a warm up in relations between the two countries and china would have welcomed to listens apparent commitment to pursuing a diplomatic track in dealing with north korea in an off the camera interview the secretary of state confirmed publicly that the u.s. was pursuing back channels in dialogue with the pure nyang administration. this was the president's reaction less than twenty four hours later i told ricks to listen our wonderful secretary of state that he's wasting his time trying to negotiate with little rocket man followed by save your energy rex we'll do what has to be done. president trump continued tweeting on north korea while he traveled the short distance from his golf club to another to watch the final day of the presidents cup tournament at parity unconcern that he'd publicly contradicted his secretary of state not for the first time but given that to listen appears to have given his commitment to chinese leaders to pursue avenues of dialogue on this occasion is particularly embarrassing to the country's top diplomat and his up and stated policy this is not the first time the president has publicly contradicted his secretary of state but given that to listen appears to his given his commitment to chinese leaders to pursue you avenues of dialogue it's particularly embarrassing to the country's top diplomat and he is often stated policy we're going to continue our our peaceful pressure campaign as i have described it working with allies working with china as well to see if we can bring the regime in point yank to the negotiating table with a view to begin a dialogue on a different future for korean peninsula and for north korea this policy now reversed without consultation in a few thumb strokes and no matter how wonderful the president may describe his secretary of state ricks to listens cutting an increasingly lonely figure in what is clearly a divided administration mike hanna al-jazeera washington hillary mann leverett is a former u.s. diplomat and white house official she says tweets are not only humiliating for to listen but also harmful to washington's negotiating position. it may fatally wound up secretary teller said there's north koreans may not negotiate with him the chinese the japanese the south koreans may not take him seriously because who knows whether president actually backs him up or secretary tillerson speaks on behalf of the united states on behalf of president trump so president trump has injected tremendous confusion and chaos into what should otherwise be a kind of normal diplomatic approach you may have fatally wounded him but on the other hand we do have now president of how secretary tell us and handle the saudis in what was seen here as a dire crisis tillerson one that won that match and trump is going to china just next month so i would be surprised if this was not somehow already added or calculated to put more pressure on the chinese and to show it show china that truck is this really unpredictable figure to try to doesn't do more because of the north korea who knows what crazy truck will do you know that does seem to be part of the strategy and president right makes no secret of that being his strategy he wants this degree of not reliability to be in the discussion. china's national day they call for more democracy and an end to what they call the political persecution of china's opponents palin has more from hong kong. marching against what they see as government oppression but with a very specific demand adding to the chance for democracy calls for hong kong's justice secretary to step down they say risky and recent decision to retry and jailed protesters and activists created the city's first political prisoners. we witnessed in recent months how the secretary for justice abused his political position to make sure that those who fight for justice in hong kong would be ended up in prison activists call twenty seventeen a punishing here for hong kong's democracy movement in august three former student leaders were given jail sentences for storming the government grounds during the twenty four thousand protests that triggered a seventy nine day occupy movement government prosecutors are now bringing public nuisance charges against the co-founders of the occupy movement and since last year the government has removed six elected pro-democracy politicians from hong kong's parliament in recent years especially the share on how come people are facing a lot of loss of political suppression when you're saying i'm as tall as totally ridiculous and totally against basic human right and democracy these protests also marked three years since the start of the umbrella movement which has proved to be one of the biggest challenges to the central government in beijing but since then many here say the rights of people who live in hong kong have been eroded. there have been many protests this year but there's a heightened sense of urgency at this march people here say the best march is particularly significant given the government's recent actions they feel they could be arrested just for being at this protest despite this families and people of all ages braved the three kilometer walk through the heat and heavy rain and. i think the next generations will suffer even more because of the government i find it strange the chinese leaders from the communist regime a trying to govern hong kong like the rest of china but the two and not the same. organizers say it's the reason they held this protest on october first a day which it highlights unity in china hong kong is the only place where people can still protest freely under china's one country two systems policy and they want to make sure it remains that way the. hong kong. still ahead on the sports and jumping for joy. coming up next with joe. time for sports here is joe. thanks very much the catalan referendum has also had an impact on sports bassline a spanish league game against last palmas had to be played behind closed doors because of the clashes between police and voters there was confusion as fans key to enter barcelona as new camp the decision was only made a short time before kickoff bosler which is a voice in support for catalan independence had originally asked for the game to be perspiring but were refused by the league they released a statement saying the club condemns events which prevent its citizens exercising their democratic rights to free expression and the match finished three notes of oslo who continue to lead the league but defender gerard piqué was in tears after the game over events off the pitch so you. feel i am catalan and that something today more than ever i feel proud of the cattle and people they behaved in perfect fashion just as they have in the last six or seven years there hasn't been any acts of aggression so the national police and civil guard has had to come and behave the way they behaved i think that a lot of people in spain are against the events that have happened in catalonia the truth is they believe in democracy i can say that if people in the spanish football federation think that i am a problem then i'll step aside and leave the national team before twenty eighteen in complete contrast to barcelona is that trina silence stadium real madrid fans turned out in their thousands waving spanish flags in stands of their team's match with espanyol now they were protesting against catalonian this is the news hour live from my head quarters in doha fully back to bill coming up in the next sixty minutes leaders claim a mandate low turnout for sunday's secession referendum adds to the uncertainty about what comes next one family's struggle to reunite shows how long way to rico's road to recovery will be after hurricane maria also this hour in malaysia the trial has begun of two women accused of murdering the north korean leader is a strange half brother and we're going to meet seventy five million dollars just. in the next five to six much after visiting a role in giraffe you g.'s in bangladesh the head of the world food program outlines a scale up to help need it. thank you for joining us initial figures released by the catalan regional government show a decisive vote in favor of secession after sunday's referendum but they also indicate an unexpectedly low turnout meanwhile the divide between the regional government in boston and central government in madrid appears to have deepened after the polls closed the president of the regional government. said catalonia had earned its right to independence at least eight hundred forty four people were injured across the region a spanish police moved in to shut down some polling stations speaking from the capital madrid prime minister mariano rajoy said spain had showed it has a resources to defend itself from an attack as serious as this illegal referendum and in another sign that the crisis is far from over labor unions in catalonia have called for a general strike on tuesday while the local government unveiled the preliminary results stressing that despite the violence millions old did and behaved peacefully . i we our element last year today democracy won more importantly today people won and they won because they behaved and defended democracy peacefully in these exceptional circumstances two million two hundred sixty two thousand four hundred and twenty four people voted. john hendren reports now on the day's events in catalonia. catalonia closed its polls in reopening a historic rift with spain. heard earlier catalans had lined up by the thousands devote many paying a high price for. the spanish national police in riot gear battered their way into one voting center after another tossing peaceful voters downstairs striking them with the times and has promised confiscating ballot boxes. they did not discriminate by gender or age advancing on those peacefully protecting the polls sometimes retreating and sometimes clashing verbal ewood catalan is local more so delete apparently over the use of force today the spanish government has demonstrated a shameless attitude showing that it's only through violence that they can get their message across the spanish state has always on such questions with violence and repression. the catalan people have won the right to an independent state which would take the form of a republic here at the polls election organizers used a special tactic they gave the entire voter registry to pulling place so that if police shut down one polling place voters simply went to another this ninety two year old voter remembers when the catalan language was outlawed until the one nine hundred seventy s. now she comes to vote only to be turned away by a system shutdown. i believe we will gain independence because we are sick of the current government that we have. this hundred two year old waited out several outages to cast her ballot. that is just outside the center of barcelona where residents proudly fly the spanish banner some catalans quietly oppose independence he's said thank you i lived here for sixty years of course they love got along yeah it's where my children ah. where my family lives but there is no reason why we have problems with this obsession of just. if i am capital and yeah and i don't think like secessionist to know that i'm from the outside but then when i go to my family home then i'm also from the outside so where i might be wrong and what identity do i have yet the secessionist seem largely to have boycotted the referendum which the spanish government again declared illegitimate under spanish along you get it because. there was no independence referendum in catalonia today i'm the prime minister i'm the leader of the government and we have done what we have to do within the law we've only active in the law. when the voting ended thousands of defiant catalans remained outside to guard the ballots a long way a step and is over. as pedal and celebrate day and the government of spain continue a standoff that might have only just begun john hendren al-jazeera barcelona. and koppen hall has more now from boston on the referendum results. in a tally of the votes offered by catalan no authority as they say an overwhelming majority of those who voted voted in favor of catalonia breaking away from the rest of spain capital thora the say ninety percent of those who voted of voted for secession but the problem lies more in the level of voter turnout and from the figures that we have been given it seems that that did not reach much higher than around forty three percent that effectively means that well over hoffman registered voters in catalonia either did not turn out could not vote or boycotted the vote and that will certainly lead to even deeper divisions between the regional government in catalonia and the central government in madrid in the in the coming days what i believe we will see is that the cattle lying government pushing an interpretation to suggest that perhaps this turnout was a success i given the level of effort by the central government to crack down on this referendum and use police reinforcements to try and shut down voter stations on the other hand it is likely that madrid and prime minister mariano rajoy will point to this relatively low voter turnout to suggest that the catalonian government simply does not have a strong mandate to declare independence from the rest of spain we've going to have to look at developments over the coming forty eight hours because it is on tuesday that the catalan government has said it will declare independence from the rest of spain a based on this voter turnout they say that they will view the results of this referendum as binding also the main labor unions have declared a general strike from choose day in an effort to back the push for secession. john ramon racine now from stanford university says a spanish government's actions in trying to stop the vote does not sit well with the european union's wider value these european union is in difficult situations because the statutes do not allow it to intervene and what they continue to say is an internal affair of one of the member states nevertheless the. the very foundation of the european union rests upon civic rights upon in the non use of. militarized police force police brutality in this case of sort of the talent the against any of the citizens and let's face it with these people who are doing in barcelona and all want they was to go peacefully to the to the polling stations and demanding the right to cuss the vote on their future. in other world news a truce between colombia's government and the country's danding rebels has begun the national liberation army or agree to the terms after negotiations fail several times it's hoped the government and the agreement rather would stand while talks for a longer term deal continue in ecuador and. it's a first ever cease fire declared by the national liberation army or. the last active rebel group in colombia and the first concrete step after seven months of peace talks to end its five decades of conflict with the state a historic truce but one that's temporary at least for now. the new this doesn't completely end the conflict with the e.l.o. this is temporary it is not a cease fire weapons are surrendered or where demilitarisation takes place the truce will run through january twelfth and may be extended if respected they. start kidnapping recruiting minors and attacking oil routes and pipelines in exchange the colombian military will avoid confronting the rebels yet the group stepped up attacks ahead of the deal. since talks began with some sources government we have insisted on the urgency of this ceasefire because it stops offensive actions and brings important humanitarian relief to the colombian population. founded by a radical catholic priest in the one nine hundred sixty s. the. peace with the government before making little progress in the capital news was met with relief and hope that the sides will comply with the terms of the truce . we leave this uncertainty in its peace process but it's definitely positive if the eleven wants to do its part to end the war it is great professor victor that the court says monitoring the truce will be important i really believe that the government as well as the. the liberation army elaine are clearly committed to respect that lehman this is the most important point second one i would say disapprobation of the united nations was as well as the catholic church on the third depression of the society in columbus our biggest moment in favor of the peace process and we are really pushed the parties to respect their women talks will restart on october twenty third in quito ecuador but the road to peace will still be long and complex and the year land is seen as more hardline in its ideology and more divided in its chain of command compared with the former fired gravels but there is hope here that this ceasefire will indeed help pave the way to end all political violence in. the death toll from last month's magnitude seven point one earthquake in mexico has risen to at least three hundred sixty one people after another body was discovered in the capital two hundred twenty of the deaths were in mexico city while others were killed in more and three other states nearly two weeks after the earthquake the majority of the collapse sites have been cleared. the u.s. president has called critics of his response to disaster head puerto rico quote politically motivated ingrates power is still down goods are running no and some families remain spread out nearly two weeks after hurricane maria hit that isabel followed two sisters and i journey to find their missing father. the anti health have not heard from their father for more than ten days he lives in the central mountains in an area that was among the hardest hit by the hurricane. gas is difficult to find these days that's why when neighbors gave them some they decided to go and find him. before they go. their ways to get their work. and now we are trying to. find them he lives in one of the most remote areas of puerto rico if i spent a year in there. there when i was a child but this is the strongest one that so far we headed to was in the center of the island there was no electricity or communications here nobody knows how bad the situation really is. normally you go in there. and everything is green and you have all these big trees are beautiful and now it looks very. very sad but once there we were told we needed to take another road to much of the river but this is what's happening all around port authority that are covered with everything bridges that collapsed now heavy machines are trying to clear the road so people can start moving freely around the island. were able to cover part of the trip by road then we have to walk through the mountains. some houses are destroyed and this is how many are trying to locate their relatives this days and they were told those that been seen a little light going on at night so they are turning on their small electrical panel and this is really good news but even though they lived here most of their lives things have changed since the hurricane there used to be a small road here but it's now completely covered with trees so they're trying to find alternative ways to make it there in spite of the difficulties they say nothing will stop them from making to their old home half an hour later they start calling out and there are signs that things could be ok. shortly after they found what they searched for. we're alive we're alive my girls don't have health ed says we have been living here for forty seven years. what authority has been devastated by a hurricane but for these two sisters the wind and the rain were not able to take away the people they cherish the most hideous i will or local reese what. i saw has claimed responsibility for a knife attack that killed two people in marsay is main train station in the south of france the attacker a man believed to be in a city as was shot dead by special forces police opened a counterterrorism investigation after the station was evacuated france's interior minister described the event as an awful tragedy and praised the security forces. and. the paris prosecutor's office has been put in charge so the investigation is ongoing both on a local and national level the person who attacked the two young women who were killed was shot dead by soldiers from the city mail operation we have c.c.t.v. footage which will provide as we mentioned the military reacted with great control police in canada say a man arrested over an attack in edmonton is a somali national seeking refugee status five people were injured when the thirty year old rammed into a traffic control barricade before attacking a police officer with a knife officers a calling the incident an act of terrorism after seizing what appeared to be an eyesore flag from the man's car it is believed at this time that these two incidents are related based on evidence at the scenes and the actions of the suspect at twelve thirty a.m. today it was determined that these incidents are being investigated just as arts of terrorism under section eighty three point two of the criminal court. plenty more ahead on the news hour including after america's top diplomat visits china for talks on north korea a tweet from his boss says don. also ahead economic sanctions are threatening the livelihoods of kurds who depend on cross border trade. and catalonia is biggest sports seen place behind closed doors fans are shut out of boston known as football match after clashes over the referendum joe have the details in sports. first the trial of two women accused of murdering the north korean leader's estranged half brother is underway in malaysia they're accused of poisoning came jong nam with a nerve agent at kuala lumpur airport in february their women from vietnam ended in asia face the death penalty if they are found guilty let's go live to florence we who is outside the high court. near kuala lumpur in malaysia so what are we expecting exactly today on this first day for us. when we know the true suspect city. have already entered a plea of not guilty and that really doesn't come as a surprise and it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been watching this case now under malaysia laws if you're found guilty of murder it's a mandatory death penalty so they feed it not guilty and we know that they're already spoken to diplomats and representatives from their home countries their defense is that they were into what they thought was a reality television show they didn't know that what they had on their hands when they supposedly smeared complement of v.x. nerve agent on kim jong un's face was lethal enough to kill anyone now we've spoken to one of the defense lawyers as well and this is the next few days the next few weeks will be for the prosecution to present their witnesses to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt that these two women knew what they were doing and how that intention to do. kim jong now we know that the prosecutor action will be calling between thirty and forty witnesses it's like thought that ten of them will be x. but witnesses we're not entirely sure what sort of areas they'll be testifying in but it is very likely that there will be at least a chemicals expert amongst the witnesses right will probably testify as to how the vx nerve agent worked this case as you say florence says granted quite a lot of attention internationally is there a sense that justice will be served. well there's a sense that these two women are unwitting porn again now in south korean and american officials have already said that they believe that this was orchestrated by north korean agents and south korean intelligence officials have also said that there has been a standing order to kill. off kim jong un the north korean leader and the standing order has been in place for at least five years now now these women have all along said they were innocent and they are not the only suspects in this case now police have had police have put out an alert they have been notified interpol there is a red notice alert which is similar to an international arrest warrant out for four of the north korean men who are thought to have left the country just a couple of hours off to the killing was carried out and if these men are not if police have not been able to question them there's a sense that we really won't know what exactly happened because there are a lot of questions that will probably still remain unknown said throughout the course of this trial for example how did the women get hold of these chemicals how were they brought into the country i mean they could have been given these by someone but how were they brought into the country how would these two women who seemingly had no connection with each other brought together to carry out this. thank you very much for that florence florence three. capital kuala lumpur there was more on this let's bring in robert kennedy who is a professor of political science and diplomacy at busan national university his via skype from tucson very good to have you with us on al-jazeera again so i've heard a high profile trial and i wonder how you see this playing into the current geopolitical tensions we're seeing right now in regards to north korea and its nuclear program that the current crisis. sure i think probably the most important thing is that this will continue to make it difficult for north korea to operate overseas it was a place where north koreans could operate without a visa where north koreans could purchase electronics on the open market out any trouble where north korean agents could link up with people from third states these kinds of places are actually few and far between in the world there is obviously as we know there's a lot of sanctions against north korean entities and increasingly against north korean individuals so this is a loss it also sets back north korea's relationship with china kim jong nam had been a protege of china had sort of been under chinese protection and he was eliminated without chinese permission and so i'm actually kind of surprised the north koreans sort of took this kind of action they didn't clear with china or anything i mean just suddenly one day a chinese asset has been eliminated i can imagine the chinese are very happy about that you say he was a chinese asset he had been under chinese protection but how how why would it be even sorry g.'s a word easy how how could the north koreans get to him if he was under chinese protection. yeah i think that's actually one of the sort of big mysteries about this right is that why was kim jong un running around southeast asia without any kind of operational security. the chinese had been holding him sort of on ice if you will sort of in the background in macau because he had a claim to leadership in north korea right he has a blood descendant of the previous kim right and so the working assumption to been that the chinese were sort of holding them just in case of things sort of fell apart in north korea they had a pretender to the throne someone they can manipulate and so on and presumably this is why kim jong un wanted to leave him eliminated because he was a possible blood heir so i actually find it quite surprising that the chinese would let someone that valuable go running around southeast asia without any kind of protection that's just one of the many mysteries of this of this murder what are the what's the current status of the relations between china and north korea right now especially when you take into account the pressure that's being put on the chinese government right now to you know to to rein in north korea and you know we've heard from the u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson who is working with china now it seems to to put more pressure on north korea where does that leave relations between pyongyang and beijing. yeah i think the chinese are pretty upset with the north koreans they just don't want to say it publicly i think geopolitically the chinese see north korea as a useful buffer between them and the americans and the japanese and south koreans so they like the idea of china of korea being divided and north korea being roughly in the chinese orbit but they really don't like is the sort of ideological gangster kind of governance of north korea right so the pursuit of nuclear weapons obviously is very disruptive to china i think that china i think they do think china is not lying when they say they want to denuclearize korea they want to keep the north korea alive they don't mind the kim family but i don't think they want them with nuclear weapons similar i think the chinese realize that all this kind of north korean gangster isn't the kind of things that we've seen in malaysia not just the murders but north korea traffickers and methamphetamines and counterfeit dollars and so i think that north korea does a lot of sort of shady illicit stop and i think the chinese would like to find a way to rein that in but they don't really know how all that sort of ends up or down in not that china right because it's you know chinese banks that whole north korean money and stuff like that and china acts as a pipeline to north korea and all this tarnishes china's reputation as sort of a responsible normal you know rising superpower right they look like they're sort of a patron of the of this sort of gangster state right right and so i would say that the relationship is probably pretty strained but until china decides that north korea isn't sort of worth it as a geo political buffer anymore i don't see them cutting north korea loose very interesting very good to hear thoughts on this as always robert kelly thank you very much for joining us there from wilson thank you for having me now meanwhile the u.s. president has dismissed his secretary of state's office to negotiate with north korea as a waste of time donald trump's comments come a day after rex harrison revealed the u.s. was using direct channels of communication with pyongyang mike hanna has more from washington. secretary of state rix to listen has been holding high level talks in beijing dealing both with north korea as well as the wider relationship between the u.s. and china this seen as a crucial part of a warm up in relations between the two countries and china would have welcomed to listens apparent commitment to pursuing a diplomatic track in dealing with north korea in an off the camera interview the secretary of state confirmed publicly that the u.s. was pursuing back channels in dialogue with the pure nyang administration. this was the president's reaction less than twenty four hours later i told ricks to listen our wonderful secretary of state that he's wasting his time trying to negotiate with little rocket man followed by save your energy rex we'll do what has to be done. president trump continued tweeting on north korea while he traveled the short distance from his golf club to another to watch the final day of the presidents cup tournament at parity unconcern that he'd publicly contradicted his secretary of state not for the first time but given that to listen appears to have given his commitment to chinese leaders to pursue avenues of dialogue on this occasion is particularly embarrassing to the country's top diplomat and his up and stated policy this is not the first time the president has publicly contradicted his secretary of state but given that to listen appears to his given his commitment to chinese leaders to pursue you avenues of dialogue it's particularly embarrassing to the country's top diplomat and he is often stated policy we're going to continue our our peaceful pressure campaign as i have described it working with allies working with china as well to see if we can bring the regime in point yank to the negotiating table with a view to begin a dialogue on a different future for korean peninsula and for north korea this policy now ground. still continue to come into bangladesh not as big as they are in the beginning of. august and september but they're still coming in numbers what the prime minister set up was a five point demand is stop the violence and that may cleansing set up a safe zone and have a long term sustainable. return of the refugees right one of the key point is to. kofi annan commission report that was one of our key demand you know we'll have to see how the diplomatic maneuvering works out. diplomatic maneuvering then going on what about the conditions the refugees are in in bangladesh and any skelter relief were given by individuals by private donors that is gone it's a central distribution point the traffic is well managed but the key danger remains is the threat of infectious diseases like cholera diarrheal disease. we know that there are a lot of mobile clinics in most of the camps but they're not adequate and the letter inside. sanitation and sordid is grossly inadequate this is
