regards to north korea and its nuclear program that the current crisis. sure i think probably the most important thing is that this will continue to make it difficult for north korea to operate overseas it was a place where north koreans could operate without a visa where north koreans could purchase electronics on the open market out any trouble where north korean agents could link up with people from third states these kinds of places are actually few and far between in the world there is obviously as we know there's a lot of sanctions against north korean entities and increasingly against north korean individuals so this is a loss it also sets back north korea's relationship with china kim jong nam had been a protege of china had sort of been under chinese protection and he was eliminated without chinese permission and so i'm actually kind of surprised the north koreans sort of took this kind of action they didn't clear with china or anything i mean just suddenly one day a chinese asset has been eliminated i can imagine the chinese are very happy about that you say he was a chinese asset he had been under chinese protection but how how why would it be even sorry g.'s a word easy how how could the north koreans get to him if he was under chinese protection. yeah i think that's actually one of the sort of big mysteries about this right is that why was kim jong un running around southeast asia without any kind of operational security. the chinese had been holding him sort of on ice if you will sort of in the background in macau because he had a claim to leadership in north korea right he has a blood descendant of the previous kim right and so the working assumption to been that the chinese were sort of holding them just in case of things sort of fell apart in north korea they had a pretender to the throne someone they can manipulate and so on and presumably this is why kim jong un wanted to leave him eliminated because he was a possible blood heir so i actually find it quite surprising that the chinese would let someone that valuable go running around southeast asia without any kind of protection that's just one of the many mysteries of this of this murder what are the what's the current status of the relations between china and north korea right now especially when you take into account the pressure that's being put on the chinese government right now to you know to to rein in north korea and you know we've heard from the u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson who is working with china now it seems to to put more pressure on north korea where does that leave relations between pyongyang and beijing. yeah i think the chinese are pretty upset with the north koreans they just don't want to say it publicly i think geopolitically the chinese see north korea as a useful buffer between them and the americans and the japanese and south koreans so they like the idea of china of korea being divided and north korea being roughly in the chinese orbit but they really don't like is the sort of ideological gangster kind of governance of north korea right so the pursuit of nuclear weapons obviously is very disruptive to china i think that china i think they do think china is not lying when they say they want to denuclearize korea they want to keep the north korea alive they don't mind the kim family but i don't think they want them with nuclear weapons similar i think the chinese realize that all this kind of north korean gangster isn't the kind of things that we've seen in malaysia not just the murders but north korea traffickers and methamphetamines and counterfeit dollars and so i think that north korea does a lot of sort of shady illicit stop and i think the chinese would like to find a way to rein that in but they don't really know how all that sort of ends up or down in not that china right because it's you know chinese banks that whole north korean money and stuff like that and china acts as a pipeline to north korea and all this tarnishes china's reputation as sort of a responsible normal you know rising superpower right they look like they're sort of a patron of the of this sort of gangster state right right and so i would say that the relationship is probably pretty strained but until china decides that north korea isn't sort of worth it as a geo political buffer anymore i
